Hays, Kansas proudly announces its official designation as a Purple Heart City. 

This prestigious recognition honors the bravery and sacrifice of the sons and daughters of our community who were awarded the Purpose Heart Medal. The Purple Heart Medal is awarded to service members who have been wounded or killed as a result of enemy action while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.

A public ceremony to mark the occasion is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Wednesday, August 7, 2024 at Hays Veterans Memorial Park located near 15th Street and Haney Drive, just off Canterbury Drive. 

City officials, Purple Heart Medal recipients, and veterans from the community will be present. The public is invited to attend.

The Purple Heart City designation was a combined effort of the Hays Veterans Service Organizations, including Disabled American Veterans, American Legion, Marine League, Vietnam Veterans Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and The Society of 40 Men and 8 Horses.

This Purple Heart City designation demonstrates our community’s commitment to acknowledging and appreciating the profound sacrifices made by our military heroes. 

Signs announcing the designation will be posted alongside six different roads entering Hays. 

By becoming a Purple Heart City, Hays joins a distinguished group of communities nationwide dedicated to honoring Purple Heart Medal recipients.

WHEREAS, the City of Hays, founded in 1867, was named after Fort Hays (originally named Fort Fletcher), which was in turn named for Alexander Hays, a Union General killed during the Civil War; and

WHEREAS, the City of Hays has a long military history and proud tradition of supporting the military and its veteran population; and

WHEREAS, the Purple Heart Medal was the first award made available to the common soldier and is specifically awarded to members of the United States Armed Forces who have been wounded in combat or have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms being killed in action against a declared enemy of the United States of America; and

WHEREAS, Hays has a large veteran population with many of its veterans being Purple Heart recipients; and

WHEREAS, we appreciate the sacrifices our Purple Heart recipients have made in defending our freedom and believe it is important that we acknowledge them for their courage and show them the support they have earned;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, SHAUN MUSIL, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF HAYS, KANSAS, on behalf of the Hays City Commission, do hereby recognize Hays, Kansas, as a Purple Heart City.

Hays road closure on 6th, 7th southside between Park, Walnut starts Monday

The Kansas Wetlands Education Center (KWEC) invites the public to join its staff for a free, family-friendly meteor shower watch party on Friday, Aug. 9, from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. 

This annual event celebrates the end of summer as the Earth passes through the dust and debris of the Swift-Tuttle comet, creating a spectacular display of meteors or “shooting stars” in the night sky.

Located northeast of Great Bend on K-156 Highway, the KWEC offers an ideal location for comfortable sky-watching. Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets to relax on the KWEC lawn while enjoying the celestial show.

In addition to meteor watching, the evening will feature s’mores making and eating and several space-themed learning stations inside the KWEC. Activities include making straw rockets, fizzing meteors, and creating a glow-in-the-dark comet. Planetarium shows will also be offered in the inflatable planetarium.

The event will proceed rain or shine, but clear skies are necessary for optimal meteor shower viewing.

Play will start at 10 a.m. at the courts next to the elementary school. Cost will be $15 per person with a minimum of three games.

1. We will follow MAYB/KSHSAA rules on grades. The grade you were in May 2024 - you will be that grade for the tournament.

In the wake of recent severe weather, Hays city staff has been working to clear branches from streets and alleys, removing low-hanging or broken branches, cleaning basins, and checking for damaged traffic signs and signals. 

However, city employees will not be removing large limbs or branches from private property, as these will be the responsibility of property owners.

The Ellis County Landfill is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and  9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays for dumping and disposal of limbs and branches for free to residents of Hays for non-commercial purposes.

No dumping is allowed 15 minutes prior to closing times, according to Justin Craig, Ellis County Environmental Services director.

Gates close at 4:45 p.m. Monday through Friday and at 3:45 p.m. on Saturday. This will prevent citizens from arriving late and possibly being turned away.

Tree limbs are not accepted at the city compost site. Should property owners require additional assistance, residents are encouraged to reach out to a licensed tree trimmer.

Disposal of limbs, branches free to Hays residents at Ellis County Landfill

As 146 years of tradition dictate the last weekend in July, the Nicodemus Homecoming Emancipation Celebration (NHEC) will be held Thursday through Sunday, July 25th - 28th, 2024.&nbsp; This year's theme invokes our love for family and fully displays the excellence and accomplishments that our ancestors and current descendants have made over the past 146 years.

The four-day Homecoming begins on Thursday; the evening is set aside for the annual meetings of the organizations supporting&nbsp; Nicodemus:&nbsp; NHEC LLC., National Park Service, Nicodemus Township Board, Nicodemus Historic Landmark District Association, Kansas Black Farmers Association’s quarterly meeting and Nicodemus Historical Society will host “Meet and Greet Beans and Jeans”.&nbsp; The public is welcome.

Friday morning starts with the FREE Cowboy Breakfast, hosted by the family of Freddie and Ivalee Switzer.&nbsp; Activities throughout the day include the Live Family Tree, individual Stories From The Stage, a Sunshine Story Teller by “Ina Buckner-Barnette” and late-night Karaoke.

Saturday, our contributing partner, the Kansas Black Farmers Association, will sponsor the 5K Run/Walk and the complimentary Pancake Breakfast.&nbsp;&nbsp; At 11:00 AM, is our crowd favorite, the Official 146th Homecoming Emancipation Celebration Parade.&nbsp; The National Park Service will discuss Brown v. Board of Education (1954), recognizing the 70th anniversary.&nbsp; Other afternoon activities include a Fashion/Talent Show, Watermelon Feed, Inspirational Dance by Patricia Fuller, and Gospel Soul singing.

🏀 - Saturday Afternoon Special Youth Event: Team Hollywood Celebrity Streetball presents its famous 3 on 3 basketball tournament.&nbsp; Featuring Team Hollywood's very own former LA Lakers player Clay Johnson #34 in person with his NBA Championship Ring.

🎹 - On Saturday night, Enjoy the Lawn Chair Concert with Denver Headliner Ron Ivory and Miles Apart Band.

Friday, Saturday and Sunday, our contributing partner, Nicodemus Historical Society, will show the short film “Robert and Billie” on the big screen, followed by the documentary “Ellis Trail To Nicodemus.”&nbsp;&nbsp; On Friday Only Cris Cricitiello will be in person to sing “In the Sweet By and By” at 6:45 PM.

Friday and Saturday our “Kids Corner” is full of activities to teach our history and entertain our young ones.&nbsp; On Saturday, The Kansas Children’s Discovery Center will be on-site for play.&nbsp; Sunflower Health Plan sponsors this Mobile Museum.

Sunday, Homecoming winds down with our traditional church service, Pastor Ordainment and Community Dinner at the Nicodemus First Baptist Church and the Township Hall.

Don’t forget to visit our food vendors.&nbsp; A variety of food choices have been selected so enjoy the delectable “Tastes of Nicodemus”.&nbsp;

 </figure>SubmittedAs 146 years of tradition dictate the last weekend in July, the Nicodemus Homecoming Emancipation Celebration (NHEC) will be held Thursday through Sunday, July 25th - 28th, 2024.&nbsp; This year's theme invokes our love for family and fully displays the excellence and accomplishments that our ancestors and current descendants have made over the past 146 years.The four-day Homecoming begins on Thursday; the evening is set aside for the annual meetings of the organizations supporting&nbsp; Nicodemus:&nbsp; NHEC LLC., National Park Service, Nicodemus Township Board, Nicodemus Historic Landmark District Association, Kansas Black Farmers Association’s quarterly meeting and Nicodemus Historical Society will host “Meet and Greet Beans and Jeans”.&nbsp; The public is welcome.Friday morning starts with the FREE Cowboy Breakfast, hosted by the family of Freddie and Ivalee Switzer.&nbsp; Activities throughout the day include the Live Family Tree, individual Stories From The Stage, a Sunshine Story Teller by “Ina Buckner-Barnette” and late-night Karaoke.Saturday, our contributing partner, the Kansas Black Farmers Association, will sponsor the 5K Run/Walk and the complimentary Pancake Breakfast.&nbsp;&nbsp; At 11:00 AM, is our crowd favorite, the Official 146th Homecoming Emancipation Celebration Parade.&nbsp; The National Park Service will discuss Brown v. Board of Education (1954), recognizing the 70th anniversary.&nbsp; Other afternoon activities include a Fashion/Talent Show, Watermelon Feed, Inspirational Dance by Patricia Fuller, and Gospel Soul singing.🏀 - Saturday Afternoon Special Youth Event: Team Hollywood Celebrity Streetball presents its famous 3 on 3 basketball tournament.&nbsp; Featuring Team Hollywood's very own former LA Lakers player Clay Johnson #34 in person with his NBA Championship Ring.🎹 - On Saturday night, Enjoy the Lawn Chair Concert with Denver Headliner Ron Ivory and Miles Apart Band.Friday, Saturday and Sunday, our contributing partner, Nicodemus Historical Society, will show the short film “Robert and Billie” on the big screen, followed by the documentary “Ellis Trail To Nicodemus.”&nbsp;&nbsp; On Friday Only Cris Cricitiello will be in person to sing “In the Sweet By and By” at 6:45 PM.Friday and Saturday our “Kids Corner” is full of activities to teach our history and entertain our young ones.&nbsp; On Saturday, The Kansas Children’s Discovery Center will be on-site for play.&nbsp; Sunflower Health Plan sponsors this Mobile Museum.Sunday, Homecoming winds down with our traditional church service, Pastor Ordainment and Community Dinner at the Nicodemus First Baptist Church and the Township Hall.Don’t forget to visit our food vendors.&nbsp; A variety of food choices have been selected so enjoy the delectable “Tastes of Nicodemus”.&nbsp; Also, checkout our non-food vendors for some unique shopping and different finds.During all four days of celebrating, we have fun associating with friends and family, playing games, dancing, eating good food, and listening to music by DJ Storyteller broadcasting throughout the park.&nbsp; Come Experience the Nicodemus Homecoming!We can only do this with your help.&nbsp; Please consider donating to keep the tradition going!Donations can be mailed to:&nbsp; Nicodemus Homecoming Emancipation Celebration (NHEC), P.O. The Alzheimer’s Association is inviting Hays area residents to join the fight to end Alzheimer’s by participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s®&nbsp;on September 21 at Fort Hays State University Quad (East side of Memorial Union). The Walk site opens at 9:00 a.m., the Promise Garden Flower Ceremony begins at 9:30 a.m. and walking begins immediately following the ceremony.&nbsp;

“This is a pivotal moment in the fight against Alzheimer’s. There are now treatments that change the course of the disease,” said Leigh Purdy, Walk Committee Chair. “We hope that everyone in our community can join us by starting a team to help the Alzheimer’s Association raise awareness and funds for families facing the disease today, take more steps toward treatments and finally ending this disease.”

On Walk day, participants honor those affected by Alzheimer’s with the poignant Promise Garden ceremony — a mission-focused experience that signifies our solidarity in the fight against the disease. During the ceremony, walkers will carry flowers of various colors, each color representing their personal connection to the disease.

Nearly 7 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's disease – a leading cause of death in the United States. Additionally, more than 11 million family members and friends provide care to people living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias. In Kansas, there are more than 54,500&nbsp;people living with the disease and 89,000&nbsp;caregivers.
