Due to COVID-19 precautions, the Fish Fries will be drive-thru/pick-up only.&nbsp; There will be no in-door dining.&nbsp; 

Orders&nbsp; must be placed in advance by March 17rd.&nbsp;&nbsp;

 The cost of the meal is $10 for adults and $5 for children.&nbsp;

The Kansas Department of Transportation plans to close a portion of U.S. 281 in Russell County to through traffic on Monday, March 15, weather permitting.

The closure will begin at 15th&nbsp;Street in Russell and extend north to Land Road. Traffic will be detoured via I-70, K-232 and K-18.

The closure is part of a $9.8 million T-WORKS project to rehabilitate and reconstruct approximately 4 miles of U.S. 281 in Russell County. Work began in March 2020 and is expected to be complete in December 2021.

The Hays Kiwanis Easter Egg Hunt is one of the oldest and best-attended Easter Egg Hunts in Hays, Kansas! Join us Saturday, April 3, for some eggcellent Springtime fun on the campus of Fort Hays State University.

The hunt starts promptly at 9:00 am and is over in under a minute! Ages 0-12 are invited to participate. Children will be divided into their appropriate age groups to make this event fun, safe, &amp; fair to all the egg hunters.

This event is free and open to the community. Masks are encouraged but not required. Please observe social distancing. Due to the pandemic, the Easter Bunny will not be making an appearance this year.

Between 1 and 3 feet of blowing snow is expected throughout this weekend for much of the Denver region where the band resides. Presently, mostly heavy rain, possibly changing to ice and snow, is forecasted for northwest Kansas.

The Queen City Jazz Band plans to perform for Western Plains Arts Association on Sunday, May 2, instead.

GRETAT BEND - Have you ever dreamed of making a rainbow, building a microscope, or traveling through the water cycle? 

These are among the activities that will be featured by Fort Hays State University’s Kansas Wetlands Education Center during a week later this month. Monday, March 15, through Friday, March 19, is being called spring break week at the Wetlands in conjunction with the annual spring break for several area school districts.

The KWEC will host several free, hands-on, interactive activities from 1 to 5 p.m. and center on a new theme each day. A virtual option will also be offered live at 10 a.m. each day through the KWEC Facebook page.

Monday, March 15:&nbsp;“Science of Rainbows” - Reflection, refraction and dispersion of light through water droplets. Create different rainbows with light, then experiment with some other science principles using rainbow colors.

Tuesday, March 16:&nbsp;“Digging into Dirt” - Learn about one of the world's most important resources on Earth. Find out where soil comes from, why it is important, and how it forms the hills and valleys.

Wednesday, March 17:&nbsp;“Microscope Magic” - Learn how these amazing instruments magnify tiny objects as you look at plants and animals under our microscopes, and make a microscope of your own.

Thursday, March 18:&nbsp;“Who Eats Who in the Wetland?” - Create your own unique food chain or pyramid to take home.

Friday, March 19:&nbsp;“Wonders of Water” - How much drinkable water is on Earth? Become a water droplet, and go through an incredible journey as you learn about the water cycle.

These free, come-and-go activities are open to all ages.

After participating in the activities, spend time at the center with the KWEC’s interactive exhibits, 15-minute video about Cheyenne Bottoms, and their classroom animal ambassadors. Grab a map, and Wetland staff will tell you the best places to look for birds at the largest interior marsh in the United States.&nbsp;KWEC’s hours during that week are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

The traditional jazz band was founded in Denver more than 60 years ago, and is recognized across the nation for playing outstanding traditional, Dixieland, gospel and spiritual music. &nbsp;The group has also toured widely across Europe. Colby High School will host Queen City Jazz Band, at 3 p.m., Sunday, March 14. Admission is by season ticket or adults $20, students $10 at the door.&nbsp; In addition to businesses and individual donors across northwest Kansas, Queen City Jazz Band is made possible through special funding by the Dane Hansen Memorial Foundation, Lenora; the Greater Northwest Kansas Community Foundation, Bird City; and the Thomas County Community Foundation. Bill Clark, tubist and band leader, joined the QCJB in 1976 and became the leader in 1985. A retired University of Colorado music professor, Clark set a goal while a 1960's high school student to one day play in the already popular band. Band members come from strong music performance and/or music eduction background and all have played with a number of local bands prior to joining QCJB. Instrumentalists include Kevin Bollinger, trumpet; John Bredenberg, clarinet and saxophone; Eric Staffelt, trombone; Hank Troy, piano; Rory Thomas, banjo; and Tony Pantelis, drums. Their gospel, blues and jazz vocalist Wende Harston has sang with the band since 1992. The band has released numerous recordings over the years. Bill Clark, tubist and band leader, joined the QCJB in 1976 and became the leader in 1985. A retired University of Colorado music professor, Clark set a goal while a 1960's high school student to one day play in the already popular band. Band members come from strong music performance and/or music eduction background and all have played with a number of local bands prior to joining QCJB. Instrumentalists include Kevin Bollinger, trumpet; John Bredenberg, clarinet and saxophone; Eric Staffelt, trombone; Hank Troy, piano; Rory Thomas, banjo; and Tony Pantelis, drums. Their gospel, blues and jazz vocalist Wende Harston has sang with the band since 1992. The band has released numerous recordings over the years. Ball in the House, and R&amp;B group originally scheduled this date, canceled their 2021 spring season because the on-going pandemic. World Water Day is an annual observance focusing on the importance of water.&nbsp; To celebrate, the City of Hays and the KSU Big Creek Middle Smoky Hill River Watersheds are once again partnering to host a World Water Day Fun Fest on Thursday, March 25, from 10 a.m. to noon, in the lobby of the Sternberg Museum of Natural History.&nbsp; 

This free event will feature fun, hands-on, "water-related" activities for kids of all ages. In addition, educational information regarding water conservation and water quality will be provided.&nbsp; Social distancing and masks are required. &nbsp;

Space Tech Day open to NW Kansas 4-H'ers

The Chamber in Hays will host its first “Legislative Coffee” of 2021 on Saturday, March 13 from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

“Premier Sponsors” Midwest Energy Inc. and the Hays Daily News are proud to provide this opportunity for area residents to visit with local legislators about the legislative process and happenings in Topeka and at the national level. 

Representing on behalf of the Office of U.S. Senator Jerry Moran is Mike Zamrzla, deputy state director. Senator Rick Billinger and Representatives Ken Rahjes and Barb Wasinger will be in attendance to address current legislative issues impacting Kansas.

The legislators and their designees will begin with opening remarks and will be given two minutes to address each question. Closing statements will commence after the Q&amp;A session closes. 

A chat room feature will be available for virtual attendees to input their questions during the virtual event.

Hays Chamber to virtually host Legislative Coffee March 13

It is time for the annual KSU Watersheds and city of Hays Water Poster Contest. The 2021 theme is “Let’s Talk Water.”

Daycares, pre-schools, USD 489, Holy Family Elementary, TMP Marian and home-school students, students at Fort Hays State University and NCK Tech, and adults in the city of Hays are eligible to participate.&nbsp;

The “Let’s Talk Water” posters can focus on water conservation or stormwater/water quality messages. Posters could show how to reduce water usage indoors, outdoors, and/or at home and work. Also, posters might share how to reduce sediment, nutrients, and E.coli bacteria, household chemicals, etc. that are harmful to water sources. Both water conservation and stormwater/water quality can be highlighted on the same poster.&nbsp;

Posters must be horizontal, designed on 12 x 18-inch white poster paper with “Let’s Talk Water” included. Posters can be designed with pencil, paints, pens, crayons, or markers. In addition, the posters can be 3-dimensional, or compute-generated. Name, age, and teacher need to be included on the back of the poster.&nbsp;

Poster paper is available for pick-up at Public Works Department, 1002 Vine Street, during regular business hours.&nbsp;

Prize money will be awarded to 1st-3rd place winners in each age division.&nbsp;

Winning posters will be displayed at TriCentral Office, 1101 Main, supply during the month of May and also at the Ellis County Fair.&nbsp;

Posters are due by Thursday, March 18, 2021 at school offices, city hall, or the Public Works Department.&nbsp;
