TOPEKA—The Kansas Supreme Court has authorized the temporary relocation of Thomas County District Court offices from the Thomas County Courthouse to 1105 Taylor Ave. in Colby.

The move will allow for renovations to the courthouse. District court offices will remain in the temporary location until they move to a new judicial center being built next to the courthouse.

Thomas County District Court offices will be closed Thursday, December 3, and Friday, December 4, for the move. Offices will reopen at the temporary location Monday, December 7.

All COVID-19 safety protocols will be observed at the temporary location. These include answering questions about symptoms of or possible exposure to COVID-19, wearing a face mask while in the building, and maintaining 6 feet of physical distance from others.

The authorization does not allow for jury trials to be conducted at the temporary location because the facility does not meet the&nbsp;<a href="https://kansascourts.org/l/r_mXcDniw5m0LCoJudPzBal2jvWzj8xpZlc_PXbRu1Q" target="_blank">Supreme Court Mandates and Guidance Regarding Resuming Jury Proceedings</a>.

If jury trials are required, Chief Judge Kevin Berens of the 15th Judicial District must submit to the Office of Judicial Administration (OJA) a jury trial plan for conducting court proceedings at an alternate location that meets Supreme Court administrative orders, mandates, and guidance.

In addition to Thomas County, the 15th Judicial District is composed of Cheyenne, Logan, Rawlins, Sheridan, Sherman, and Wallace counties.

HAC 5-State Photography Exhibition opens Dec. 5 with open house

PRATT – Swap the shopping centers for scenic views this Black Friday, as Kansas state parks will once again waive entrance fees as part of the nationwide #OptOutside initiative. 

All 28 of Kansas’ state parks are participating in an effort to get families and friends outdoors and enjoying nature.&nbsp;

On Friday, Nov. 27, state park visitors will have a chance to win a free night’s stay in a Kansas state park cabin of their choice. To enter, visitors must simply take a selfie within the park and share it on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram with the tags #OptOutside and #MyKsStatePark.&nbsp;

#OptOutside is the brainchild of outdoor retail giant REI, who in 2015 decided to close all 150-plus stores for<a></a>&nbsp;a day and pay more than 13,000 employees to spend the day outside. It’s become a valued annual event for REI, state parks across America and the millions of people who’ve taken the day to grab some fresh air.&nbsp;

And this year’s event couldn’t have come at a better time.&nbsp;

“In the middle of everything, we have watched as people all over the world, some for the first time, looked to time outdoors to reflect, restore and connect with one another,” said Eric Artz, REI president and CEO. “We are focusing on what matters most.”&nbsp;

Learn how reindeer fly at FHSU STEM-ED annual Christmas show

The 70th annual Christmas lighting ceremony in WaKeeney will take place on Saturday, November 28.

  Activities begin at 9:00 a.m. and continue throughout the day with the lighting ceremony beginning at 6:00 p.m. 

 Santa will arrive and light the 35 ft. tree and then proceed down the street to his new house in the North Pole. 

 Throughout the day there will be many free activities, such as a Christmas Bazaar, “Timeless Holiday Tradition” display at the local museum, “A Christmas Carol” puppet show, Nex-Tech Express train rides, horse-drawn wagon rides, live reindeer to view, and a soup supper.

Plans are to continue with the lighting ceremony with safety precautions.  Many of the activities are outside.  We are asking that everyone follow social distancing guidelines and wear masks, if required.

The tree and decorations will remain through January 1, 2021, so visitors can view our traditional Christmas scene any evening until then.  The holiday tradition display will also remain at the Trego County Historical Museum until 2021.

Government surplus food distribution Friday in Hays

The Kansas Department of Transportation plans to begin a field survey the week of Nov. 23 for proposed shoulder widening and bridge replacement projects on K-23 in Sheridan County.

Survey crews will be working along a 6-mile corridor from County Road 70 north to Walnut Avenue in Hoxie. Activities will include the use of survey instruments on the ground to determine locations of existing features within the survey corridor. KDOT expects the survey work to be completed by March 2021.&nbsp;

Crews will contact property owners or tenants for permission to enter private property, if access is needed. Michael Selley, field survey project manager, will oversee the survey for KDOT.
