'100 Things' author will have book-signing in downtown WaKeeney

K-State Research and Extension and the Cottonwood District are hosting a regional Crop Pest Management School at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 723 Main Street in Great Bend on Thursday, Dec. 9. It will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The school is to aid producers, consultants and commercial applicators in identifying and managing crop disease, insect and weed problems. CEU’s for commercial applicators of 7 hours for the 1A certification along with the 1 core hour will be offered. Certified Crop Advisor Credits will also be available. &nbsp;

Several K-State Research &amp; Extension specialists will be presenting. Topics being covered are: a research update on liquid applications;&nbsp; getting the most from your herbicide applications;&nbsp; common weeds - identification and characteristics;&nbsp; identifying and controlling common corn insects;&nbsp; corn diseases – including stalk rots, bacterial leaf streak and Goss’s Wilt;&nbsp; weed research update;&nbsp; and combatting wheat diseases. &nbsp;

Cost to attend is $50, if registered by December 1. After Dec. 1, cost is $75 to pre-register or at the door.&nbsp;

Sternberg Museum explains how wild animals prepare for cold weather

Due to the city of Hays' observation of Thanksgiving Day, refuse/recycling collection schedules will be altered as follows. 

There are no expected changes to Monday’s collection route. 

Tuesday and Wednesday collection routes will be picked up on Tuesday. Thursday and Friday collection routes will be picked up on Wednesday. 

It is anticipated that heavy volumes of refuse/recyclable will be encountered around the holidays. Please be sure to set your bags out by 7&nbsp; a.m. on the collection day and keep in mind that the trucks have no set time schedule. 

City of Hays customers who have questions should contact the Solid Waste Division of the Public Works Department at 1-785-628-7350.

Get in the mood for the most wonderful season of all when the Hays Symphony presents a light program of Christmas favorites on Saturday, Dec. , 7:30 p.m. in the Fort Hays State University Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center. The ensemble is under the direction of Dr. Brian Buckstead, assistant professor of violin and viola at FHSU.

The program features: Anderson’s&nbsp;Sleigh Ride; Coleridge-Taylor’s&nbsp;Christmas Overture; Guaraldi’s&nbsp;A Charlie Brown Christmas; Holcombe’s&nbsp;Festive Sounds of Hanukah; Krogstad’s&nbsp;The Bells of Christmas&nbsp;and&nbsp;Christmas at the Movies; Mozart’s&nbsp;Sleigh Ride; and selections from Tchaikovsky’s&nbsp;Nutcracker Suite.

Sleigh Ride&nbsp;is&nbsp;one of the most recognizable festive works when the orchestra takes us on a ride with jingling sleigh bells, whip cracks, and a neighing horse. Both&nbsp;A Charlie Brown Christmas&nbsp;and&nbsp;Christmas at the Movies&nbsp;will remind listeners of family time gathered around the television for those holiday&nbsp;specials. And the magical&nbsp;Nutcracker Suite&nbsp;transports us to a world of sugar plum fairies, toy soldiers, and a Russian folk dance.

Audience members are invited to attend a post-concert reception, sponsored by Insurance Planning Inc.&nbsp;

LA CROSSE — The Rush County Historical Society and Kansas Barbed Wire Museum will host the annual Old-Fashioned Christmas on Friday, Nov. 26, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the museum complex in La Crosse. 

Visitors can browse the five unique museums beautifully decorated for the holidays: the Historical Museum in the 19th Century Timken Depot; the Post Rock Museum, one of the seven wonders of Kansas Customs; the Nekoma Bank Museum, a restored 1916 rural bank; the Pleasant Point School Museum; and nationally recognized Kansas Barbed Wire Museum. There will be live musical performances including piano and organ. Visitors can enjoy hot cider, homemade cookies and popcorn, or roast their own marshmallows over an open fire. There will be a take-home crafts project for kids.

Santa Claus will arrive at 6 p.m. on the fire truck and hand out candy sacks to the kids in front of the bank museum. For kids of all ages, La Crosse Fire District #4 will be serving hot dogs and chocolate milk or water.

There will be a one-night only display of antique toys in the recently restored Pleasant Point One-Room School Museum. The century-old school is a time capsule of early 20th century rural education with nearly all of its original furnishings and books. In the Barbed Wire Museum, visitors can view models and schematics from the Fort Hays State University Exhibits Design class project to renovate and expand the museum’s galleries.

Events begin at 5 p.m., Friday, November 26 at the museum campus on the south edge of La Crosse on West First Street. To ease congestion, visitors are asked to park north of the creek on Third Street across the bridge. Visitors can access the complex by the footbridge in the park. Persons with mobility issues are welcome to park in the museum parking lot.

Developmental Services of Northwest Kansas recently announced the Esther McMurtrie Memorial Golf Tournament raised over $13,000.&nbsp; 

The four-person scramble tournament was held Oct. 8 at the Ellis Golf Club.&nbsp; Proceeds are being used to benefit DSNWK group homes Hays.&nbsp; DSNWK would like to thank the many participants, contributors and supporters who made the event a success.

DSNWK is a 501(c)3 nonprofit serving those with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the 18 most northwestern Kansas counties. RUSSELL — Opening reception of Roaming House: A Journey Home at the Deines Cultural Center from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday from 5-7 p.m. for Joey Embers.

In 2001, Joey Embers, a Kansas native from McPherson County, received a BA in studio art from Bethany College. It’s during this time that Joey found passion for learning and a strong sense of identity with a paint brush in hand and usually a charcoal-smeared face.

The paintings in this show come from a larger body of work called&nbsp;A Roaming House, a journey home&nbsp;that was started in 2014.&nbsp; The series depicts a house suspended in an endless shifting landscape of time and emotions. Using bold vibrant colors and a wide range of marks Joey leads the viewer on a journey through a surreal mindscape. The composition of each painting starts to reveal a dialogue between each of them. If you change the order and the relationships of the paintings, they will tell a different story.

Joey’s exhibition of paintings will be in the Deines Gallery from November 19 to January 5.

The Deines is located in Russell at 820 N. Main Street and is open 12-5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and Saturday and Sunday 1-5 p.m.

RUSSELL — The Russell County Association of Churches will host the annual Community Thanksgiving Service at St. John Lutheran Church, 425 N. Main, Russell, at 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 21. Community members wishing to sing with the Community Choir are asked to arrive at St. John by 5:45 p.m. for rehearsal.

Pastor Teri Sutherlin of St. John Lutheran Church will deliver the Thanksgiving message. The offering taken during this service will benefit the Russell County Food Pantry.

Russell Co. churches will host Community Thanksgiving Service

This month, families, churches and groups are busy transforming empty shoeboxes into fun gifts filled with toys, school supplies and hygiene items.&nbsp;&nbsp;Operation Christmas Child is in full swing, with National Collection Week set for Nov. 15 to 22.

Operation Christmas Child is a ministry of Samaritan’s Purse, an international Christian relief organization headquartered in Boone, N.C.&nbsp;&nbsp;Since 1993, Operation Christmas Child has collected and delivered more than 188 million gift-filled shoeboxes to children in more than 170 countries and territories.&nbsp;&nbsp;For many children, this is the first gift they will ever receive.

Rachel Albin of Hays, northwest Kansas area director, said that 7,130 boxes were collected in northwest Kansas in 2020.

Hays has two drop-off locations: CrossPoint Church, 1300 Harvest Road; and Messiah Lutheran Church, 2000 Main.

Once again this year, friends and neighbors in Ellis County will have the opportunity to enjoy a free Thanksgiving meal from noon to 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 25.&nbsp;Guests may choose either individually packaged meals for drive-through pick up, or they may choose to dine with their friends and family at host locations around town, served “family style.”&nbsp;

Whether they want individually packaged meals, or family-style at one of the host sites, guests must register at&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href="http://nex-tech.com/thanksgiving">nex-tech.com/thanksgiving</a>&nbsp;from Nov. 1 through Nov.15. Those not having access to the internet or those requiring meal delivery may contact First Call for Help at&nbsp;<a>(785) 623-2800&nbsp;&nbsp;</a>for assistance in registering.

For individual meals: The registration site will ask for the name, phone number and email address of every person ordering,&nbsp;as well as the number of meals. Then the guests&nbsp;will select “pick up.” They will&nbsp;drive through to pick up their meals&nbsp;from noon to 2 p.m.&nbsp;on Thursday, Nov. 25, in the parking lot of The Press, 230 E. Eighth.&nbsp; Please enter from the west. Volunteers will help individuals load their orders.&nbsp;

Then the guests will select a site that can accommodate their group. Then the group just needs to arrive at the time indicated to enjoy a family-style meal in that setting. This year, as in years past, the meals are free, offered as a ministry of the Ellis County Ministerial Alliance and with the assistance of generous co-sponsors. Free will donations can be made at the pick-up site and host locations. As in years past, there will be bagged groceries available for individuals who desire them, available in the pick-up line at The Press. There is no registration necessary for groceries.

The Kansas Wildlife and Parks Commission will hold its last public meeting of 2021 on November 18. While select Commissioners and Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks staff will gather in-person at the Buffalo Bill Cultural Center in Oakley, virtual participation is welcomed and encouraged.

Kansas Dept. of Wildlife and Parks to meet in NW Kan. this month

Fort Hays State University’s next Science Café is set for 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 15, at The Venue in Thirsty’s Brew Pub &amp; Grill, 2704 Vine.

The monthly presentation about science, sponsored by FHSU’s Science and Mathematics Education Institute (SMEI), is titlted “An Evolution of Technology’s Effects on Healthcare Delivery.” Science Café is part of SMEI’s mission to improve and embrace the education of science and math in western Kansas.

Scott Rohleder, executive director of IT at Hays Medical Center, will be the presenter. He will discuss how the healthcare industry has moved from an information dark age to using precision health medicine to improve the quality of care.

Next FHSU Science Café will focus on medical technology

RUSSELL — The holiday season is not a joyful one for everyone, especially those who are grieving, dealing with sever or chronic illness, those who are coping with depression or anxiety and those who have been hard hit financially.

The church embraces the ministry of healing as an important way of bringing the loving care of God to people in their need. Although the dimensions of this healing work are many and include a variety of institutions dedicated to it, the ministry of healing has its foundation in the prayer of the worshiping community, where two or three are gathered at a particular time of need.

In the rite of healing, the church does not replace the gifts of God that come through the scientific or medical community, nor does it promise a cure. Rather, the church offers and celebrates gifts such as these: God’s presence with strength and comfort in time of suffering, God’s promise of wholeness and peace, and God’s love embodied in the community of faith.

Pastor Teri Sutherlin will offer weekly healing services beginning Nov. 11. Services will begin at 5:30 p.m. and will be 30 to 45 minutes. Anyone is welcome to attend these services, which will continue through the Christmas season.
