NICODEMUS — The National Park Service at Nicodemus National Historic Site invites all guests and visitors to join us in celebrating its 25-year anniversary on Saturday. 

In November 1996, through Congressional law, the National Park Service was authorized to preserve, protect, and interpret the historical town of Nicodemus as the only remaining western town established by African Americans during the Reconstruction era following the Civil War, representing Black homesteading and settlement of the Great Plains. 

In 1877, Black entrepreneurs in Topeka formed the Nicodemus Town Company to recruit homesteaders for its site in north-central Kansas. The first group or "colony" of 30 people settled, then a colony of 300 arrived from Kentucky. By 1879, the town center had a general store, hotel, churches, livery stables, post office, a school, and a real estate office. Nicodemus survives as a small community but a reminder of the exceptional achievements of Black homesteaders in the Great Plains. 

The one-day event will feature a panel of guest speakers, including National Park Service dignitaries and personnel, historical society members, and Nicodemus descendants and partners. Discussion and program topics will range from the success and challenges of the site to future projects, and collaborations with the Nicodemus community and the National Historic Site. 

"It is encouraging to see the progression over this past year, from hiring new staff to the rededication of the AME Church and now the celebration of Nicodemus' growth over 25 years." said Superintendent Frank Torres. "We have made great progress, and we look forward to accomplishing even more together in the future." 

The event is open to the public and will take place from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the Nicodemus Township Hall and Visitor Center. Attendees who register in advance are invited to a complimentary lunch provided by the Nicodemus Historical Society. Thirsty's offers thanks to veterans with free meal

Kansas Startup is back to full strength and will kick off on Friday, Nov. 12, at Fort Hays State University’s Robbins Center.

The 48-hour hands-on event, which runs through Sunday afternoon, offers the opportunity for people to pitch ideas for new ventures, form teams around the best ideas, then turn those ideas into reality. Teams work on plans ranging from solving problems in their community to launching nonprofit organizations.

Henry Schwaller IV is an instructor of management and entrepreneurship at FHSU and a local businessman, who has been involved with the event from its start in 2013. He always looks forward to the weekend but is especially excited about this year’s event returning to the in-person format after most of it was conducted over Zoom last year.

“There is far more energy and enthusiasm with the in-person competition,” Schwaller said. “We work best and learn best when we are face-to-face.”

Schwaller said pre-event enrollment has been strong thus far and expects up to 50 or more participants. The event begins at 6 p.m. Friday with a barbecue meal. A formal presentation will follow the meal, along with some icebreaker exercises. Individuals pitch ideas for new ventures, then teams are formed and begin discussing strategy for their presentations.

Participants are encouraged to come as individuals and form impromptu teams, so they can get out of their comfort zone, Schwaller said.

On Saturday, the teams work on developing their ideas with the assistance of coaches and other experts, then transforming it into a launchable venture. They then complete the task of transforming their ideas into a lauchable venture.

Prizes will be awarded to four teams – $1,000 for first place, $500 for second, and $250 for third. The founder’s award of $250 goes to a team that didn’t place in the top three but worked hard on its presentation.

Schwaller said that people from the community traditionally drop in on Sunday’s presentations, adding that students especially benefit from the participation of community members.

“We bring in folks with specialized talent,” Schwaller said. “That gets the teams targeted assistance.”

Schwaller said he notices a vast difference in creativity from the first couple of years of Kansas Startup, noting that presentations have advanced from starting food trucks and sports bars a few years ago to ideas of community revitalization, nonprofit consulting, and nurse recruiting.

“Ideas have gotten much more sophisticated over the years,” he said. “We now have a generation of students who are learning these types of collaborative-type participation in class. Our campus is a petri dish for creative, innovative thought, and our students are really benefitting from it.”

The Kansas Department of Transportation has started preliminary work on Phase I of the delayed T-WORKS K-383 modernization project in Norton and Phillips counties.

Phase I consists of approximately 6 miles of K-383 in Phillips County, starting 2 miles east of Long Island and ending at the U.S. 183 junction. Project work will include reconstruction and widening of the highway on its existing alignment into a 24-foot mainline surface with 6-foot paved shoulders. KDOT also plans to decrease side slopes along the route and will flatten several sections of hills to help improve motorist visibility.

Work this winter will mainly take place off of the roadway with minimal traffic impacts expected. The road will be closed for reconstruction starting in March 2022 and a state route detour will be in effect. Further information regarding the closure points and detour will be issued nearer to the closure date.

Venture Corporation of Great Bend is the primary contractor for the $11.8 million project.

The 26-mile K-383 corridor was selected in 2011 as a modernization project under KDOT’s T-WORKS transportation program. KDOT split the project into three separate phases for construction with Phase II consisting of the 6 miles from the east U.S. 36 junction to Almena and Phase III covering the 14 miles from Almena to east of Long Island.

Award winning clarinetist Roger Campbell leads the hottest jazz band since the Swing Era. After Midnight is the only sextet featured in the Colorado Music Hall of Fame at Red Rocks, considered among leading world venues.

Colorado swing band set for performance in NW Kan.

The fourth annual New Music Festival, presented by Fort Hays State University’s Department of Music and Theatre, will be held on Friday, Nov. 12, and Saturday, Nov. 13.

Comprised of FHSU music faculty who share a passion for the music of living composers, the New Music Ensemble commissions composers to bring new and exciting works to Hays. These composers in residence work with FHSU composition students and present a lecture to faculty, students, and community members. They also rehearse with the ensemble on a brand-new work to premiere at the festival.

“It’s exciting to have a work written specifically for our ensemble, and our audience members will be the first people in the world to hear it,” said Dr. Kristin Pisano, associate professor of music and director of the New Music Festival at FHSU.

Pisano said that past works commissioned by FHSU have since been performed at other universities and national conferences, bringing recognition to Fort Hays State and its music department.

This year’s composer in residence will be Dr. Stephen Andrew Taylor, a professor of composition at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has composed&nbsp;Piranesi&nbsp;for flute and piano, his new work that will be premiered at the festival’s evening concert.

The culminating event of the festival, “An Evening of the Music of Dr. Stephen Andrew Taylor,” will begin at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Sheridan Hall’s Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center. A reception will follow in the lobby. Tickets are free to the public and will be available at the door or beforehand at the Hays Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, 2700 Vine.

The concert will feature other works by Taylor, including two works for viola and electronics, a duo for flute and clarinet, and a video installation set to the scenario “the spirit of the universe takes a journey.” Taylor will also perform an original piano composition.

Taylor&nbsp;composes music that explores boundaries between art and science. One work on the evening program is Solaria, a video created in collaboration with physicist Smitha Vishveshwara, who studies black holes.

Pisano said that Vishveshwara is passionate about the connections between science and art and that she and Taylor came up with this scenario “the spirit of the solar system takes a journey.”

“The 2021 New Music Festival will open the musical ears of the Hays community and provide the audience with a uniquely different musical experience,” Pisano said.

In addition to the concert, Taylor will give a lecture at 2:30 p.m. Friday in the university’s Malloy Hall 115. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.

Public water suppliers in Kansas take all measures necessary to notify customers quickly after a system failure or shutdown. Regardless of whether it’s the supplier or KDHE that announces a boil water advisory, KDHE will issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

Laboratory testing samples collected from Ellis County Rural Water District No. 1C indicate no evidence of bacteriological contamination and all other conditions that placed the system at risk of contamination are deemed by KDHE officials to be resolved. &nbsp;

positions that will open in 2022. There will be four open positions the board will be looking to
fill.


Prospective candidates must be willing to serve a three-year term. The Grow Hays Board meets

members are occasionally asked to serve on additional committees, which meet as required.

Grow Hays seeks applications for board of director openings

Vet says goal is to increase number of live calves born

MANHATTAN – In anticipation of calving season, the Kansas State University Department of Animal Sciences and Industry and K-State Research and Extension are planning a series of calving schools beginning in December and continuing through January. 

The program will outline overall calving management that includes stages of the normal calving process, and tips to handle difficult calving situations. 

K-State Research and Extension beef veterinarian A.J. Tarpoff said the goals include increasing producers’ knowledge and practical skills, and the number of live calves born if they need assistance.

He said presenters will also share tips on when and how to intervene to assist the cow or heifer. They will also demonstrate proper use of calving equipment on a life-size cow and calf model. 

“Our goal is for producers to leave better prepared for calving season,” Tarpoff said. “We will discuss timelines on when to examine cows for calving problems, and when to call your vet for help if things are not going well. We will also discuss calf care early in life. It’s an excellent program regardless of experience level.” 

The meetings will have other timely educational topics, such as forage sampling/analysis, and vaccine care and handling.  

Six calving schools are planned, including:

PARADISE - On Saturday, November 13, the Paradise United Methodist Women will hold their 70th&nbsp;annual&nbsp;Bazaar&nbsp;and Turkey Dinner in the Paradise Auditorium on Main Street.

The&nbsp;bazaar&nbsp;features the church cookbook, handmade crafts, homemade baked items as well as candies, jellies, and other foods. All items are reasonably priced.

The&nbsp;bazaar&nbsp;opens at 10:30 a.m. and the turkey dinner begins at 10:45 a.m. The menu includes turkey and dressing with all the trimmings, including homemade rolls, pies and desserts. Carryout is also available. 

The cost of the meal is $13 for adults and kids grades 5-12, with kids grades K-4 for $6.

The event is held the first day of pheasant hunting season, providing a great meal for hunters as well as anyone else who enjoys visiting with old friends over a delicious meal at an affordable price.

TOPEKA — The Kansas Department of Transportation is announcing a Request for Proposals to install electric vehicle charging stations along the state’s most traveled highways.

Included is Interstate 70 in the areas of Oakley/Grainfield/Grinnell, WaKeeney and Russell.

This RFP is the next step toward administering approximately $2 million of the state’s allocation of Volkswagen Mitigation Trust funds dedicated to the installation of DC Fast Charging (DCFC) stations. KDOT has currently identified 12 priority locations to improve public access to charging stations every 50 miles along primary corridors.

Fort Hays State University’s chapter of the American
Democracy Project is partnering with the Fort Hays State University Foundation
to host a Times Talk regarding elder abuse.

&nbsp;This event will be
held on Nov. 16 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. in the Memorial Union’s
Stouffer Lounge. 

Elder abuse experts Jennifer Walters, attorney and partner,
and Aimee Kroeger, care coordinator, from Clinkscales Law Office of Hays, will
present information regarding the nature of elder abuse and methods of
combating it. Light refreshments will be served. 

The American Democracy Project and political science department
would like to thank the Fort Hays State University Foundation, Clinkscales Law
Office and the New York Times for their assistance and support of this event.
