The new owner of the Victoria St. John’s Rest Home will hold an open house and public meeting to gain community input on use of the building and grounds. 

Jeff Pfeifer will open the rest home to the public at 5:30 pm Tuesday for anyone interested in walking through the facility.&nbsp; The community meeting will start at 6:30 pm at the rest home. Pfeifer is seeking input on potential uses for the property, concerns regarding needed changes to the property, and unique features of the property that should be preserved.

Returning to northwest Kansas the following Sunday, Sept. 19, are a popular progressive western swing trio from Texas. With over 15 years of touring, The Quebe Sisters have delivered their authentic triple fiddle and three-part harmony sound to the concert halls and festivals of North America and Europe. The sisters will take stage at the Oakley High School Auditorium at 3 p.m. CDT, Sunday, Sept. 19.

In addition to businesses and individual donors from throughout the region, this program is made possible through a special season gift from the Dane G. Hansen Memorial Foundation, Logan. Admission by WPAA season ticket or adults $20, students $10 at the door.

Grace, Sophia, and Hulda Quebe front an innovative Progressive Western Swing band of archtop guitar, upright bass, fiddles and sibling harmony. The Dallas-based five-piece presents a unique Americana blend of Western Swing, Jazz-influenced Swing, Country, Texas-Style Fiddling, and Western music.&nbsp;

“We differentiate our music as ‘Progressive Western Swing’ from simply ‘Western Swing’ because we aren’t trying to sound just like Bob Wills,” Grace Quebe explains. “Instead, we continue his vision, playing the style he pioneered in an authentic way by incorporating new genres and songs, interpreting them using our own unique voice through Country instrumentation.”

The band’s stripped-down acoustic instrumentation breathes new life into seasoned sounds once found in Texas dance halls and honky-tonks. The USD 489 Early Childhood Connections program will celebrate its thirty-year anniversary with a Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting on Thursday, Sept. 16,&nbsp;at 9:30 a.m.

USD 489 Early Childhood Connections is a&nbsp;child development, parenting and family services program for pregnant women and families.&nbsp; The program integrates Parents as Teachers, Early Head Start, Head Start and Preschool-Aged At-Risk Program.&nbsp; There is no cost for families receiving Connections services.&nbsp; The program provides services to over 380 children, and their families, in Ellis, Rush, Rooks and Russell Counties. The announcement was made on social media.

 It will be used to purchase new shutters for the home after it gets a fresh new coat of paint.

Hays FUMC to host blood drive Friday

TOPEKA - State Treasurer Lynn Rogers has announced an essay contest for all Kansas students in grades 5-12 for a chance to win a $529 investment into a Learning Quest 529 savings account. The contest coincides with College Savings Month, which runs the entire month of September.

“With the cost of higher education increasing over the last decade, Kansas families need all the help they can get to reduce that financial burden so their children and grandchildren have opportunities to achieve their dreams,” said State Treasurer Lynn Rogers. &nbsp;“Learning Quest 529 savings accounts are a great tool to help students save for whatever path they want to pursue after high school, and the purpose of this essay contest is to get students thinking about saving for their future.”

To be eligible for the contest, students must have their parent or guardian&nbsp;<a href="https://forms.gle/mYyXQEYVf7uq5U2YA" target="_blank">submit a form</a>&nbsp;to the Kansas State Treasurer’s Office and include their student’s response to two questions: 1) What do you think the Kansas State Treasurer does? and, 2) If you had $1 million, what would you do with it?

Responses to both questions are required. However, the responses to the second question will be judged by a panel of teachers from around the state who have volunteered their time.

Submissions will be accepted through close of business on October 8, 2021.

Essays will be grouped by grade levels of 5/6, 7/8, 9/10, and 11/12. One winner from each grade level grouping in each Congressional District will be named for a total of 16 winners. Winners will be announced in early November. Taxpayer dollars are not being used for this promotion.

Learning Quest 529 Savings Plans allow any U.S. citizen or resident to open an account or be beneficiary, and there are no age or income limitations. The funds can be used for two-year, four-year, and technical school programs as well as registered apprenticeship programs. They can also be used for graduate school programs and to pay student loans. The funds do not have to be used exclusively in Kansas.

	The Daughters of IsabellaI, Isabella Circle #254, Hays, KS is working on the state convention.

The bi-annual convention of the Daughters of Isabella will be held Sept. 24 to 26 in western Kansas.&nbsp; This is a state convention and women from 24 Circles from across Kansas will be attending.&nbsp; In addition, state officers, State Chaplin Rev. Andrew Berkgamp, and International Regent Susanne Suchy will be in attendance. Committees have been appointed, and members are busy with various tasks. &nbsp;

The venue is Hilton Garden Inn in Hays. Hosting circles this year are:

Items of business will include Election of New State Officers; Standing &amp; Internal Rules changes will be voted on; and each Local Circles’ books will be audited.	

The service project for the convention is "Blessing Bags." These bags are gallon zipper bags filled with various sample-size hygiene products and a few snacks.&nbsp; Filled bags are donated to the four Catholic Charities Departments located in each of the dioceses.&nbsp; Businesses are asked to contact their local D of I circle if they have any items to donate for the project.

A memorial service for deceased members will be held on Friday followed by installation of local circle officers. &nbsp;

After the business meeting, evening events on Saturday include a banquet, dessert reception honoring the International Regent, and an oral auction. Sunday will include a Convention Mass, installation of newly elected state officers, brunch, and announcement of state award winners and the raffle prize winners. &nbsp;

State Regent, Belinda Kasper, welcomes all members to the convention and is looking forward to seeing all of our Kansas Daughters of Isabella Sisters. She is also very excited to have our State Convention in Western Kansas!

ELLIS - The Big Boy Locomotive is scheduled to pass through Ellis at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

The Foundation will be nearby selling donuts and coffee starting at 8 a.m. and host a hot dog BBQ at 11 a.m. The proceeds will be collected by the Foundation and go towards track repairs for the miniature aerotrain rides.

Most of the track has been repaired with new railroad ties and gravel, replacing rotten wood and uneven surfaces. Volunteers have been working hard to get this accomplished and there is about 1/4 left of the track to fund and repair. 

Please consider supporting this project either through a donut and hot dog purchase, or through a private donation to the Foundation.&nbsp;

'Keep It Clean Kansas' calendar art contest open to K-12 Kansas students

DODGE CITY - The Kansas Cowboy Hall of Fame Committee requests nominations of living or deceased individuals for consideration for induction into the Kansas Cowboy Hall of Fame.

Any organization or individual may nominate a qualified person for consideration. The Kansas Cowboy Hall of Fame Committee meets annually to evaluate and determine inductees. 

Nominations are accepted in the following categories:

Former St. Joseph School to clean out building for pending sale to developer

Holy Cross Church in Pfeifer will host a Mass to commemorate the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 12.

 Celebrants will be Bishop Gerald Vincke and Father Reggie Urban. Music will be provided by Trilogy. Seed wheat will be blessed.

There will be a social in the school building following the Mass. Everyone is welcome to attend.&nbsp;

Pfeifer's Holy Cross to host annual Mass

Due to the observance of the Labor Day on Monday, refuse/recycling route collection schedules will be altered as follows: 

* Monday and Tuesday routes will be picked up on Tuesday. 

* There is no anticipated change to Wednesday, Thursday or Friday collection schedules. 

Although collections may not occur on your normal day, collections will be completed during the week. 

It is anticipated that heavy volumes of refuse/recycling will be encountered around the holidays. Make sure your refuse and recycling are out by 7 a.m., and keep in mind that the trucks have no set time schedule.
