LARNED - The TMP-Marian Monarchs baseball (2-0) team opened the season with
a doubleheader sweep of the Larned Indians Friday in Larned.

GAME 1: TMP 8, Larned 0 TMP’s Ty Schmeidler and Grant Nehls combined on a no-hitter,
and Caden Dinkel drove in a pair of runs as the Monarchs picked up the 8-0
victory.

The Monarchs got the scoring started early, scoring two runs
in the top half of the first inning.

Ian Nehls doubled with one out, and then, following a Larned
error, scored on a double steal, giving TMP the 1-0 lead.

Ty Schmeidler also scored a run on an error in the inning,
putting TMP up 2-0.

TMP’s lone run in the second inning came on a wild pitch.

After back-to-back scoreless innings, TMP got back on the
scoreboard, scoring three times in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth.

Jacob Seib led off the fifth with a walk and eventually came
in to score on back-to-back errors by the Indians.

TMP added a second run on an error that scored Ty Schmeidler,
who had doubled, making it 5-0 TMP.

Their final run of the inning game on a Connor Breit fielder’s
choice that made it 6-0 TMP.

In the top of the sixth inning, TMP’s Cadel Dinkel drove in
a pair of runs with a double to left, putting the Monarchs up 8-0.

Dinkel finished two-for-four with two RBI’s. Ty Schmeidler
scored three times.

Schmeidler was awarded the win. He allowed just four walks
with six strikeouts in three and two-thirds scoreless innings.

Freshman Grant Nehls allowed just two walks and struck out five
in three and a third innings as the two combined for a no-hitter.

GAME 2: TMP 11, Larned 4 The Monarchs scored in all but one inning en route to an
11-4 win over the Indians in game two.

TMP put up three runs in the first inning. With one out, Ian
Nehls walked, Ty Schmeidler singled, and reached third on an error. Nehls
scored on the play, making it 1-0 TMP.

Caden Dinkel followed with an RBI single and Grant Nehls
added an RBI double as TMP opened up a 3-0 lead through the first inning.

The Monarchs added two more in the second inning.

With two outs, and a pair of Monarchs on base after two
walks in the inning, Dinkel doubled to right, giving the Monarchs a 5-0 lead.

Larned answered with three of their own in the bottom of the
second, and then, after a scoreless third inning, TMP led 5-3 heading into the
fourth.

Grant Nehls connected on his first career home run in the
top of the first inning, giving TMP a 6-3 lead. 

Larned was able to get a run back in the bottom of the
inning, making it 6-4 TMP.

The Monarchs added another solo run on an Ian Nehls RBI
single.

With the bases loaded in the sixth, a walk by Isaac Purinton
gave TMP the 8-4 lead.

Adler Brown added an RBI groundout in the inning to put TMP
up 9-4.

In the seventh inning, TMP added a run on a Connor Breit
Fielder’s choice and a bases-loaded walk by Isaac Purinton, helping the
Monarchs secure the 11-4 win.

Dinkel, Brown and Grant Nehls all collected two hits, and
Dinkel collected three more RBIs.

Purinton got the win for TMP. He allowed one unearned run in
three hitless innings of relief. He struck out one and walked five.

⚾ TMP-Marian sweeps Larned in season opener

HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs collected 14 extra base hits,
including five home runs, on their way to a pair of run-rule victories over the
Russell Broncos on Friday in the season opener.

GAME 1: TMP 16, Russell 1 In the top half of the first inning, TMP&nbsp; (2-0, 2-0 MCL)&nbsp; starter Brynn Rebel
worked around a leadoff single, thanks to a double play and a strikeout.

Rebel allowed only a second-inning run on a wild pitch, with
a pair of hits and a walk, while striking out five in the victory.

In the bottom of the first TMP’s Bria Windholz singled home
Rebel for the game’s first run. One batter later, freshman Brynn Schoepf
connected on her first career homerun, putting the Monarchs up 4-0.

After Russell got a run back in the top of the second, Rebel
connected on a two-run home run in the bottom of the inning, putting TMP up
6-1.

Brooke Koenigsman added a seventh run for the Monarchs with
a double, and then two batters later, freshman Paige Koenigsman connected on
her first career home run, giving the Monarchs a 9-1 lead through two innings.

Teagan Gottschalk led off the third inning with a double,
and the courtesy runner came in to score on a dropped third strike, putting TMP
up 11-1.

Rebel singled in her third RBI of the game, extending TMP's
lead to 12-1. A Windholz sacrifice fly made it 13-1. 

Brooke Koenigsman followed that with her second RBI double,
putting TMP up 14-1.

The Monarchs then scored on an error, and with the bases
loaded, Raegan Allen was hit by a pitch, securing the Monarchs' 16-1 win in
three innings.

Rebel, Windholz and Schoepf each drove in three runs for the
Monarchs.

GAME 2: TMP 16, Russell 0 The Monarchs scored 10 runs in the second inning and cruised
to a game two win behind three shutout innings from Bria Windholz, who drove in
three runs for a second straight game.

Windholz worked out of a bit of a jam in the first. Russell
got a pair of two-out singles put with runners at the corners, but Windholz
induced a groundout to the first baseman, keeping the game scoreless.

In the bottom of the frame TMP wasted little time getting on
the board. 

After the first two hitters reached base, Brooke Koenigsman
scored two runs on an RBI triple, putting TMP up 2-0.

Windholz drove her home on a groundout, giving TMP a 3-0
lead.

Following back-to-back walks, TMP scored on a passed ball
and two runs on an error, making it 6-0 Monarchs through the first inning.

Schoepf reached base on an error by the Russell catcher to lead
off the second inning and came all the way around to score, making it 7-0 TMP.

Brooke Koenigsman followed that with her second home run of
the day, giving the Monarchs the 8-0 lead.

Two batters later, Paige Simpson connected on her first career
home run, driving in two for a 10-0 lead.

Nicole Schumacher doubled in a run and then scored on a
fielder’s choice for a 12-0 TMP lead.

Following a pair of walks, Windholz doubled in two runs,
making it 14-0 TMP, and then Paige Koenigsman added a two-run double of her
own, giving TMP the 16-0 victory.

🥎 Monarchs' offense leads the way in season-opening sweep of Russell

Kansas wheat growers know that success starts with strong, resilient varieties. Few understand this better than Dr. Guorong Zhang, a wheat breeder at Kansas State University's Agricultural Research Center in Hays. 

In a recent episode of the&nbsp;Wheat’s On Your Mind&nbsp;podcast, Zhang discussed his breeding philosophy, career path, and the future of wheat development in Kansas.

Zhang’s journey began on a small farm in eastern China’s Zhejiang Province, where his family farmed rice and jute on less than an acre. After studying at Zhejiang Agriculture University, he spent time in barley research before coming to the U.S. for a Ph.D. in plant breeding at North Dakota State. That experience led him through research roles in soybean and biofuel crops, and eventually to K-State in 2012, where he took over the Hays breeding program.

“At the beginning, yield was my main focus,” Zhang said. “Farmers need high-yielding varieties to be profitable. Over time, I added more objectives—disease resistance, drought tolerance, and quality.”

His program has produced widely adopted varieties including Joe, KS Dallas, and KS Bill Snyder. Named in honor of the Hall of Fame football coach, the Snyder variety gained attention for its strong yield potential and broad adaptability. Zhang continues refining its drought tolerance as part of ongoing improvements.

Kansas weather has created some of Zhang’s toughest hurdles. In 2021, a hailstorm destroyed up to 80% of his trial plots in Hays, setting the program back significantly. These experiences have reinforced his focus on resilience in both environmental and disease-related stress.

“We’re getting better data, faster,” Zhang said, referencing the integration of double haploid breeding and drone phenotyping into his program. “The goal is to develop varieties that can handle both environmental stress and disease pressure.”

Field testing takes place across eight locations in western Kansas, including five farmer-managed sites. These trials give Zhang’s team insight into how lines perform under real-world growing conditions. He values the feedback received during field days and uses it to refine breeding goals for future releases.

“The western Kansas variety has strong resistance to Triticum mosaic virus and wheat streak mosaic virus, as well as improved drought tolerance,” Zhang said of two new releases expected this year. “The central Kansas variety has exceptional yield potential and strong disease resistance.”

His breeding program also includes collaborative work with universities like Colorado State to tackle new threats like wheat stem sawfly. Together, they evaluate new lines and share research data to speed up resistance development for high-risk regions.

Even as technology and challenges evolve, Zhang stays grounded in the basics: better yield, better disease resistance, and better quality. “We want Kansas farmers to have access to the best possible wheat varieties,” he said.

Hays' Guorong Zhang talks breeding better wheat on Wheat Scoop

LARNED—Kansas Department of Health and Environment officials heard Larned residents' concerns about Innovative Livestock's permit submission for a new cattle facility on Tuesday.

The proposed&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ilsbeef.com/">Innovative Livestock Services</a>&nbsp;feedlot is designed to house 88,000 beef cattle and will feature open lot pens, storage areas, sediment basins and waste storage ponds.

The facility would be about 10 miles south of Larned.

The KDHE hosted an informational session and public hearing on Tuesday, led by Livestock Waste Management Section Chief Casey Guccione.

"Our review process involves making sure that these facilities meet the laws and regulations that have been defined by the Legislature," Guccione said.

Longtime Larned residents Merrill Cauble and Felix Revello attended the public hearing to oppose the proposed feed yard and advocate for the region.

They outlined concerns regarding water contamination, economic effects, the need for further testing and air pollution.

"To go out and have a nice evening with the family or friends out on your back porch for a barbecue... it ruins the day and evening. You have to take everything inside because it's intolerable outside," Cauble said.

KDHE has drafted a proposed Kansas Water Pollution Control Permit for the facility, which is available on its&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kdhe.ks.gov/436/Livestock-Waste-Management">website</a>.

Although the facility is about 10 miles from Larned, many residents say they will still be affected, especially since other feed yards are already in operation nearby.

One attendee who lives near a feedlot north of Larned said adding another south of town would create more water issues that could affect his children.

"I have a 9-year-old. I want him to be healthy and be able to thrive in his life. If he's going to have all these water issues now, that's going to cause issues for him later," he said.

The attendee went on to share that he received a heart transplant in December and cannot afford to install a new water system.

"I cannot currently shower in my own home because of the water quality, and that's before this new feedlot," he said. "I go into town four to five times a week just to take a shower if people let me."

He adds that he cannot drink his water or wash dishes with it, forcing him to buy cases and gallons to meet basic needs. This expense is one he struggles to afford while out of work.

While many residents voiced opposition and skepticism about KDHE’s ability to protect their community, others showed confidence in the proposed facility and its potential benefits.

One attendee, a farmer who lives about eight miles from the proposed site, said past issues involving&nbsp;Innovative Livestock Services were addressed when they arose.

"When they had dust problems, they fixed it. When they needed water, they pipe water from clear across the river to water the pens down. They are good neighbors," he said.

The attendee added Larned is an agricultural community struggling due to a lack of business, and voiced support for the new feedyard, citing the jobs it would create.

"We've got to do this if we want our community to survive and grow," he said.

A farmer from Rozel who owns land near an existing&nbsp;Innovative Livestock Services facility also endorsed the project, saying he’s confident the new feed yard will implement all necessary safeguards.

"I'm familiar with the dust and smell," he said.&nbsp;"[Innovative Livestock Services] is a tremendous steward of the ground. From what I see, they do everything right. They take care of the ground and the feed yards."

A representative of the Kansas Livestock Association also appeared to show support.

Another opponent lives about a mile from the site, making him one of the closest residents to the proposed facility who attended the hearing.

A father of three, his concern is groundwater contamination. His home is not connected to a rural water district, and he says nitrate levels are allegedly already high near other feedlots.

"I just wish there was a guarantee that there would be a lot less at this new lot, but living so close, I just don't see it," he said.

They urged that no permit be approved until existing environmental issues are resolved.

"Rural Kansas' rights to healthy lives and enjoyment of their homes are being sacrificed to produce enormous wealth for distant owners," Revello said.

Guccione did not address public concerns directly during the hearing. All comments were recorded for a formal written response to be released later.

This expense is one he struggles to afford while out of work.While many residents voiced opposition and skepticism about KDHE’s ability to protect their community, others showed confidence in the proposed facility and its potential benefits.One attendee, a farmer who lives about eight miles from the proposed site, said past issues involving&nbsp;Innovative Livestock Services were addressed when they arose."When they had dust problems, they fixed it. When they needed water, they pipe water from clear across the river to water the pens down. They are good neighbors," he said.The attendee added Larned is an agricultural community struggling due to a lack of business, and voiced support for the new feedyard, citing the jobs it would create."We've got to do this if we want our community to survive and grow," he said.A farmer from Rozel who owns land near an existing&nbsp;Innovative Livestock Services facility also endorsed the project, saying he’s confident the new feed yard will implement all necessary safeguards."I'm familiar with the dust and smell," he said.&nbsp;"[Innovative Livestock Services] is a tremendous steward of the ground. From what I see, they do everything right. They take care of the ground and the feed yards."A representative of the Kansas Livestock Association also appeared to show support.Another opponent lives about a mile from the site, making him one of the closest residents to the proposed facility who attended the hearing.A father of three, his concern is groundwater contamination. Larned residents unhappy with Innovative Livestock Services feedlot permit

FHSU recognized its first Global Citizen Leaders at a presentation in March. The Global Citizen Leader program provides students with an opportunity to earn a transcript note documenting their leadership activities on a global scale.

Noah Erichsen, environmental science and history senior from Ellsworth, and Stephany Rother, financial planning senior from Weskan, were honored for completing the program.

“Thank you so much for being our first couple of students in this program,” said Jeni McRay, assistant provost of internationalization and strategic initiatives, speaking at the presentation. “We are very serious about our mission to develop engaged global citizen leaders and working to bring all the elements together.

“Thinking about sustainability and generally being good citizens and understanding a bit more about the world is hopefully what we are trying to do with this program.”

Noah said he had been surprised to find opportunities to engage globally when he first came to FHSU.

“It’s just amazing,” he said. “Something I never thought Fort Hays could offer. But they offer it so well and in an affordable way.”

FHSU’s Global Citizen Leader program requires students to complete courses and cross-cultural experiences, as well as a presentation synthesizing and reflecting on their learnings and experiences.

Attaining a well-rounded academic background through his coursework was central to Noah’s global leaders experience.

“I learned there are boundaries, but boundaries should not contain people,” he said. “People flow, ideas flow, and that’s where you get this wide perspective.”

Noah studied at the University of Barcelona at the end of his sophomore year at FHSU. During his study abroad experience, his language skills progressed from “not so great” to “passable.”

“When I opened my mouth, everyone knew exactly where I was from,” he said with a laugh. &nbsp;

Using primary sources for his history papers and being able to hold historical documents in his hands were highlights of Noah’s experiences.

“It was so amazing to see the streets where Romans took their chariots as they were building their empire,” he said.

For Stephany, the global citizen leaders program met her three main expectations: coursework, community engagement and studying abroad.

“Being able to go abroad and see different things has helped me connect with people in a way that I wasn’t expecting,” she said. “I met so many people with so many perspectives and experiences. To me, being a citizen is building community, being able to connect people and different ideas.”

Stephany, whose study abroad experience was primarily in the U.K., also traveled to Greece, where she was able to apply her global economics coursework to real-life situations. She learned that taxes, economic systems, and buying and selling in international systems differed greatly from the U.S.

In addition to increasing her cultural awareness, Stephany found that educators in the U.K. put a greater degree of focus on academic writing. She said she is grateful that the skills she learned in the U.K. have significantly impacted her coursework in the U.S.

Hearing Noah and Stephany’s presentations was inspiring for Dr. Fatin Yaro, global affairs academic partnerships coordinator.

“Their journeys clearly indicate that the program is fulfilling its goals and aligning well with the broader university’s mission,” he said. “Their passion, growth, and readiness to drive meaningful change both in their communities and on a global scale are proof of the program’s impact.”

“We look forward to seeing the next cohort of Global Citizen Leaders continue these transformational endeavors.”

TOPEKA, Kan. – Fort Hays State saw its nine-game win streak snapped on Friday in an MIAA doubleheader at Washburn. The Tigers had the lead in game one, but a key miscue led to an Ichabod comeback win and they went on to sweep the doubleheader by scores of 3-2 and 3-0. FHSU moved to 20-8 overall and 5-3 in the MIAA, while the Ichabods moved to 24-13 and 6-4 in the MIAA.

Washburn 3, Fort Hays State 2 Fort Hays State had a 2-0 lead going to the bottom of the fifth inning in the first contest, but saw Washburn rally with three runs over the next two innings to escape with a 3-2 win on its home field. A key error in the bottom of the fifth extended the inning on what should have been the third out when the Tigers were up 2-1. Washburn followed with an RBI double to knot the score at 2-2. Ichabods pitcher Alexis Tanguma then had the decisive blow in the game, leading off the sixth inning with a solo home run to put WU in front 3-2.

WARRENSBURG, Mo. - Four fielding errors doomed the 24th-ranked Fort Hays State baseball team in Friday's&nbsp; series opener at No. 3 Central Missouri, with the Mules winning 7-2. The Tigers (20-7, 15-3 MIAA) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but the Mules (21-6, 12-3 MIAA) scored seven unanswered runs down the stretch to seal the win.

Tony Moore&nbsp;got the Tigers going with a double in the top of the first. Derrek Woolwine&nbsp;later worked a six-pitch walk with two outs to bring Brady Kreutzer&nbsp;to the plate, who delivered with a two-RBI double to left center.

Ty Riley retired the side in order in the bottom of the first before working out of trouble to leave the bases loaded in the second. UCM's starter Evan O'Toole settled in after the first, facing the minimum in each of the next four innings.

Central Missouri evened the score with a pair of unearned runs in the third before taking a 3-2 lead with another run in the fifth inning. Fort Hays State had a chance to tie in the top of the sixth but stranded a man at third. The Tigers then had two on with no outs in the eighth, but Mules reliever JD McReynolds escaped the jam with three consecutive strikeouts.

The Mules then added to its lead with four runs on four hits and two Tiger errors in the bottom of the eighth before McReynolds retired the side in order in the ninth to lock down the win.

Riley (5-1) suffered his first loss of the season after allowing just one earned run (three total) on five hits and five walks while striking out five over 5 1/3 innings of work. Kaleb Carpenter&nbsp;allowed four runs (three earned) in 2 2/3 innings of relief, giving up five hits and walking one. The City of Hays has been awarded a Build Kansas grant totaling $15,833,333 to develop a sustainable long-term water supply in Edwards County.

Announcing the award city officials emphasized its importance in addressing the critical water needs facing the city and its regional partner, Russell.

The awarded funds support a joint initiative between the City of Hays and the City of Russell, co-owners of the R9 Ranch in Edwards County, where the water supply will be developed.

This project aims to ensure water sustainability, addressing urgent needs created by current inadequate and drought-susceptible water sources for both cities.

"Securing this Build Kansas grant marks a significant step forward in our effort to provide Hays and Russell with a reliable water source," said Toby Dougherty, Hays city manager. "This investment is crucial for ensuring our community's long-term sustainability and resilience against drought conditions that have historically challenged our region."

The joint Hays-Russell project involves developing infrastructure to extract and transport water from the property.

The new water supply is expected to meet the current and future demands of both communities, significantly reducing vulnerability during periods of extended drought. The Build Kansas grant plays a pivotal role by providing the necessary non-federal matching funds required for an even larger federal funding opportunity.

By providing match funding, the program empowers municipalities to pursue additional federal resources, maximizing their ability to address significant infrastructure challenges.

The City of Hays is currently seeking an additional $50 million through the Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities (BRIC) grant program administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Award announcements for the BRIC funding are anticipated later this summer.

John Braun, R9 project manager for the City of Hays, underscored the importance of these complementary funding sources for project completion.

"This Build Kansas grant positions us strategically as we apply for the BRIC funding," Braun said. "Having secured these essential matching funds significantly strengthens our BRIC grant application, giving our project a competitive edge. This combined funding approach is vital to ensuring we can successfully implement and complete this critical infrastructure."

For decades, the cities of Hays and Russell have faced considerable water challenges due to inadequate local water resources and ongoing drought conditions.

These factors have put significant stress on existing water infrastructure, prompting city leadership to prioritize securing long-term, drought-resistant water solutions.

"Water is the lifeblood of any community," Dougherty said. "We cannot overstate the importance of this project to the future prosperity and stability of our region. Our ability to provide residents and businesses with a reliable water supply not only protects our cities but also positions the region for continued economic growth and development."

Mayor Sandy Jacobs expressed gratitude for the state's support, calling the grant award a critical investment in regional resilience.

"We deeply appreciate receiving this grant, recognizing the magnitude of support it represents for the residents of Hays and Russell," Jacobs said. "Securing a sustainable water future through this funding is a testament to the cooperative efforts of our two cities and the state’s commitment to supporting resilient community infrastructure."

A Ransom couple who were arrested in July each on a charge of mistreatment of a dependent adult entered pleas in Ness County District Court on March 20.

Lynn Schmidt, 66, and Opal Schmidt, 71, were both charged with mistreatment of a dependent elder adult, criminal restraint and endangerment,&nbsp; according to court records.

Lynn Schmidt pleaded no contest to all counts as he was originally charged, according to court records.

Opal Schmidt pleaded no contest to the felony charge of mistreatment of a dependent adult, according to court records.

The felony charge of mistreatment of a dependent person carries a sentence of 32 to 136 months and a maximum fine of $300,000. Criminal restraint and endangerment are both misdemeanor charges.

Ness County Attorney Jacob Gayer declined to release the terms of the plea agreement or any other information on the case.

Lynn and Opal Schmidt's sentencings have been set for 2 p.m. May 28 in Ness County District Court.&nbsp;

A new record high was set in Hays on Thursday.

The mercury soared to 93 degrees according to the K-State Agriculture Research Center south of town.

The old record high for March 27 was 90 degrees in 1986.

A year ago on March 27 the high was 57 degrees.

An early evening thunderstorm passed through Hays, bringing some thunder, lightning, 0.05 inches of rain, and finally, a rainbow.&nbsp;

So far in March, Hays has received 0.55 inches of precipitation. The cumulative average is 1.27 inches by the end of the month.

Although moisture conditions improved slightly after last week's blizzard, Ellis County remains in moderate drought or abnormally dry.&nbsp;
