Ransom couple enter pleas on mistreatment of adult charges

A Ransom couple who were arrested in July each on a charge of mistreatment of a dependent adult entered pleas in Ness County District Court on March 20.

Lynn Schmidt, 66, and Opal Schmidt, 71, were both charged with mistreatment of a dependent elder adult, criminal restraint and endangerment,  according to court records.

Lynn Schmidt pleaded no contest to all counts as he was originally charged, according to court records.

Opal Schmidt pleaded no contest to the felony charge of mistreatment of a dependent adult, according to court records.

The felony charge of mistreatment of a dependent person carries a sentence of 32 to 136 months and a maximum fine of $300,000. Criminal restraint and endangerment are both misdemeanor charges.

Ness County Attorney Jacob Gayer declined to release the terms of the plea agreement or any other information on the case.

Lynn and Opal Schmidt's sentencings have been set for 2 p.m. May 28 in Ness County District Court.
