⚾ TMP-Marian sweeps Larned in season opener

LARNED - The TMP-Marian Monarchs baseball (2-0) team opened the season with a doubleheader sweep of the Larned Indians Friday in Larned.

GAME 1: TMP 8, Larned 0
TMP’s Ty Schmeidler and Grant Nehls combined on a no-hitter, and Caden Dinkel drove in a pair of runs as the Monarchs picked up the 8-0 victory.

The Monarchs got the scoring started early, scoring two runs in the top half of the first inning.

Ian Nehls doubled with one out, and then, following a Larned error, scored on a double steal, giving TMP the 1-0 lead.

Ty Schmeidler also scored a run on an error in the inning, putting TMP up 2-0.

TMP’s lone run in the second inning came on a wild pitch.

After back-to-back scoreless innings, TMP got back on the scoreboard, scoring three times in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth.

Jacob Seib led off the fifth with a walk and eventually came in to score on back-to-back errors by the Indians.

TMP added a second run on an error that scored Ty Schmeidler, who had doubled, making it 5-0 TMP.

Their final run of the inning game on a Connor Breit fielder’s choice that made it 6-0 TMP.

In the top of the sixth inning, TMP’s Cadel Dinkel drove in a pair of runs with a double to left, putting the Monarchs up 8-0.

Dinkel finished two-for-four with two RBI’s. Ty Schmeidler scored three times.

Schmeidler was awarded the win. He allowed just four walks with six strikeouts in three and two-thirds scoreless innings.

Freshman Grant Nehls allowed just two walks and struck out five in three and a third innings as the two combined for a no-hitter.

GAME 2: TMP 11, Larned 4
The Monarchs scored in all but one inning en route to an 11-4 win over the Indians in game two.

TMP put up three runs in the first inning. With one out, Ian Nehls walked, Ty Schmeidler singled, and reached third on an error. Nehls scored on the play, making it 1-0 TMP.

Caden Dinkel followed with an RBI single and Grant Nehls added an RBI double as TMP opened up a 3-0 lead through the first inning.

The Monarchs added two more in the second inning.

With two outs, and a pair of Monarchs on base after two walks in the inning, Dinkel doubled to right, giving the Monarchs a 5-0 lead.

Larned answered with three of their own in the bottom of the second, and then, after a scoreless third inning, TMP led 5-3 heading into the fourth.

Grant Nehls connected on his first career home run in the top of the first inning, giving TMP a 6-3 lead.

Larned was able to get a run back in the bottom of the inning, making it 6-4 TMP.

The Monarchs added another solo run on an Ian Nehls RBI single.

With the bases loaded in the sixth, a walk by Isaac Purinton gave TMP the 8-4 lead.

Adler Brown added an RBI groundout in the inning to put TMP up 9-4.

In the seventh inning, TMP added a run on a Connor Breit Fielder’s choice and a bases-loaded walk by Isaac Purinton, helping the Monarchs secure the 11-4 win.

Dinkel, Brown and Grant Nehls all collected two hits, and Dinkel collected three more RBIs.

Purinton got the win for TMP. He allowed one unearned run in three hitless innings of relief. He struck out one and walked five.

TMP will host Ellinwood on Tuesday.
