For the 18th consecutive year, FHSU has been recognized for its investment in programs that improve the lives of veterans and military personnel, earning the 2025-2026 Military Friendly School designation from militaryfriendly.com.

Institutions earning the&nbsp;Military Friendly School designation were evaluated using both public data sources and responses from a proprietary survey. More than 1,800 schools participated in the 2025-2026 survey with 830 earning special awards for going above the standard.

“Every year, we use this survey to evaluate, improve, and better FHSU and the way we take care of our military-connected students,” said Randy Adkins, military admissions advisor of FHSU online military-connected student services.

The Military Friendly program creates civilian opportunities for veterans and is the standard that measures an organization’s commitment, effort, and success in creating sustainable and meaningful opportunities for the military community.

Methodology, criteria, and weightings were determined by Viqtory with input from the Military Friendly Advisory Council of independent leaders in the higher education and military recruitment community. Final ratings were determined by combining the institution’s survey scores with the assessment of the institution’s ability to meet thresholds for student retention, graduation, job placement, loan repayment, persistence (degree advancement or transfer) and loan default rates for all students and, specifically, for student veterans.

The 2025-2026 Military Friendly Schools list will be published in the May and October issue of G.I. Fort Hays State earns 2025-26 Military Friendly School designation

If you have called or stopped by our Cottonwood Extension offices in Hays or Great Bend, you have spoken to some of the most valuable members of our team!

The agents across the Cottonwood Extension District are blessed to have incredible staff to support and assist in so many ways.

Brenda and Theresa are our office professionals and they manage a multitude of tasks, well beyond answering the phone and greeting those who step through our doors. They help to keep us organized, manage the district finances and website, and occasionally “mom” us when schedules and tasks get overwhelming. In addition, they manage so many tasks for events such as the fairs, Walk Kansas, and much more. We couldn’t function without them!

Jacy is the district-wide program assistant and provides wonderful support from scheduling social media to assisting with programs to general coordination of supplies for those programs. If you happened to see our <a href="https://www.facebook.com/ksrecottonwood">National Ag Week videos</a>, (Rowdy Ringo on 3.18.2025 and&nbsp;Crosby the Farm Dog on 3.21.2025), Jacy took my crazy idea and made it happen to share two books from local authors with 4-H youth reading. Her fun and “can do” attitude make her a joy with whom to work!

We are also fortunate to have a couple of student assistants from time to time in our offices. Kiera is a Barton Community College student and a Midway-Russell 4-H member and brings a willingness to work and help wherever needed. 

This summer we will have a student summer assistant in each office who assist with copies, fair input, answering the phones, and whatever else is needed. One of our goals is always to expose these students to the larger world of Extension work!

BERAN: It takes a team 

At the age of 15, Sophia Linenberger of Hays received a diagnosis of Ewings sarcoma cancer. She is 21 years old and has been fighting cancer for the past six years.

She was actively taking chemotherapy to treat the tumor in her head, and she just found out that she has new tumors on her pelvic bone, making this her fourth battle with Ewings sarcoma cancer.&nbsp;

The Linenberger family has been in shock, devastated and completely heartbroken. Sophia’s cancer results were not what they hoped for. They find themselves in a state of feeling completely numb. The thought of Sophia’s cancer attacking in a new place is heartbreaking for the entire family.&nbsp;

Sophia’s sister, Holly, created a GoFundMe to help her family with cancer expenses.&nbsp;Sophia receives her cancer treatment four hours away from her home and her family has been traveling there very frequently for the past six years. Community update on Sophia Linenberger

JUNCTION CITY - Hays High earned a pair of victories over Junction City on Tuesday behind strong pitching performances.&nbsp;

Game 1: Hays 6, Junction City 2 Hays senior Riley Dreher recorded four hits in the first game including an run scoring double in the first inning for the game's first run. Dreher's hit scored Alyse Zimmerman. Brooklyn Dinkel hit a sacrifice fly to deep left field to score Adelie Kippes.

The Indian bats were held silent until the fifth inning. Katie Klein opened the inning with a triple and then scored on a when Zimmerman put a ball into play for a 3-0 lead.&nbsp;

Hays added insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Zimmerman led off with a double followed by a sacrifice bunt by Kippes. Dreher drove in Zimmerman on a hard line drive to first base. Sophomore Brynlee Brous hit her first career home run three pitches later for a 6-0 advantage.

Dreher pitched strong through five innings before running into some trouble in the sixth and seventh. Junction City had runners at second and third with nobody out when Dreher caught a Blue Jay looking for the first out. A walk loaded the bases before another strikeout and a ground out ended the threat.

Junction City did break through in the seventh with a pair of runs on two hits and a walk. The Hays lead held though for the 6-2 win.&nbsp;

Dreher (3-0) struck out eight batters and walked two. She allowed seven hits and two runs, both of which were earned. Hays had eight hits in the victory.

Game 2:&nbsp;Hays 5, Junction City 0 Lanie Becker and Jaylee Summers combined for a shutout in the second game. Becker pitched the first three innings, allowing just two hits and striking out two. Summers took over for the next two innings. The first batter to face her singled. Summer retired the next six in a row, three via strike out. Becker (1-0) then re-entered the game and finished the last two innings by striking out three more batters while facing the minimum.

Catcher Avery Soliday ended the game by throwing a steal attempt at second base on the same pitch that recorded a strike out.

Hays scored one run in the second inning and two more in the third for a 3-0 lead. Brynlee Rupp walked to open the top of the second inning. She scored on back-to-back Blue Jay errors.&nbsp;

Lauren Klein and Riley Dreher lit up the scoreboard by each recording a triple to start the third inning. Brynlee Brous drove in Dreher with a sacrifice fly in foul territory for the 3-0 lead.

Hays improves to 4-0 on the season. They head to Dodge City for a single game in the Western Athletic Conference opener on Tuesday, April 8th.&nbsp;

🥎 Hays High sweeps Junction City

HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs baseball team extended their
win streak to four straight games to open the season, taking two from Ellinwood
on Tuesday in Hays.

GAME 1: TMP 14, Ellinwood 4 The Monarchs scored in all four innings, and all hitters in
the lineup, except one, collected at least one hit in a 14-4 win over the
Eagles in the first game of the doubleheader.

Freshman Grant Nehls gave the Monarchs an early lead,
hitting his second home run of the season —a first-inning grand slam —that gave
TMP a 4-0 lead.

The Monarchs added six more runs in the second inning,
capitalizing on a pair of errors and a walk to start the inning.

A Caden Dinkel sacrifice fly put TMP up 5-0. 

Adler Brown, two hitters later, added a two-run single to
extend the TMP lead to 6-0. Connor Breit followed with a two-run single,
extending TMP's lead to 8-0. Trevor Frabrizius added a two-run double, giving
TMP a 10-0 lead through two innings.

Already leading by double-digits, the Monarchs added three
more runs in the bottom of the third, taking advantage of three walks and a hit
by pitch. Dinkel singled home a run, and TMP added runs on a passed ball and a
Frabrizius walk with the bases loaded, helping the Monarchs to a 13-0 lead
through three innings.

TMP added a single run in the bottom of the fourth, making
it 14-0 on the second RBI single of the game for Dinkel.

The Monarchs went on to claim the 14-4 run-rule victory in
four and a half innings.

Grant Nehls finished 1-for-3 with the grand slam. Caden
Dinkel drove in three runs and finished two-for-two. Trevor Fabrizius also
drove in three runs for TMP.

Dinkel got the win on the mound. He allowed just two hits with
five strikeouts in four shutout innings.

GAME 2: TMP 6, Ellinwood 4 In the final game of the day, the Monarchs scored in all but
one inning and added a pair of runs in the sixth inning on their way to a 6-4
victory over the Eagles.

Ellinwood got the lead early in game two, scoring two runs
in the first inning.

TMP scored a single run in the bottom of the inning. After
the first two hitters of the game reached base for TMP, Ty Schmeidler drove in
a run with a groundout. 

With Ellinwood leading 2-1 heading into the top of the third
inning, the Eagles added another run on an RBI groundout for a 3-1 lead.

In the bottom of the third, the Monarchs loaded the bases
with no one out, and Adler Brown drove in the second TMP run on a groundout, making
it 3-2 Ellinwood.

But TMP left two runners in scoring position. 

After a 1-2-3 top of the fourth inning, the Monarchs came
all the way to tie the game at three on an RBI triple from Ty Schmeidler.

Ellinwood got another run in the inning and led TMP 4-3.

TMP again tied it in the bottom of the frame on a Connor
Breit ground out.

In the bottom of the sixth, Ian Nehls singled with two outs and
then stole second and third base before sliding in safely at home on a passed
ball, giving TMP a 5-4 lead.

They added a Caden Dinkel RBI double, hitting, giving TMP
the 6-4 lead heading into the seventh inning.

In the seventh, with one out, the Eagles threatened in their
half of the inning, before the Monarchs closed the doors on an Ellinwood
comeback with a game-ending double play, securing the 6-4 TMP victory. 

Ian Nehls finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Ty
Schmeidler also scored a pair of runs, drove in two runs, and finished 2-for-3.

Grant Nehls earned the win in relief. He allowed one
unearned run on four hits, striking out five in three and a third innings
pitched.

⚾ Indians hold off Great Bend in WAC opener

HAYS – The TMP-Marian softball team picked up two more wins Tuesday
in a doubleheader sweep of Ellinwood, improving their record to 4-0 to start
the season.

GAME 1: TMP 12, Ellinwood 1 In the first game of the doubleheader, every Monarchs hitter,
except for one, collected a base hit, and TMP doubled the Eagles' hit total in
a 12-1 run-rule victory.

Brynn Rebel got the action started for the Monarchs. After
she recorded two of her seven strikeouts in the first inning, she led off the
bottom of the first with a solo homerun, the third of her career, putting TMP
up 1-0.

She struck out two more in the top of the second, and then
Ellinwood missed played a long flyball in center field off the bat of Teagan
Gottschalk, who eventually came in to score, extending TMP’s lead to 2-0.

TMP scored off two more Ellinwood errors in the inning, and
Brooke Koenigsman added an RBI double, while Bria Windholz had an RBI single,
as TMP led 6-0 through two innings.

Following a scoreless third, the Monarchs' offense exploded
for six more runs in the fourth inning.

Four straight singles to open the inning led to RBIs for Koenigsman
and Windholz. A Gottschalk single with one out in the inning put TMP up 10-0.

TMP also added a run on a Raegan Allen pop out and a Molly
Helget double for a 12-0 lead heading into the fifth.

Ellinwood was also to record their only run of the game in
the top of the fifth inning, but TMP held on for the 12-1 victory.

Brynn Rebel allowed just one run on seven hits, striking out
seven. 

Brooke Koenigsman finished three-for-three with two runs and
two RBI’s. Bria Windholz was two-for-three with two runs and two RBI’s.

Piper Simson recorded three hits in a 6-5 win over the Eagles in the final game

Ellinwood took advantage of two walks, two TMP errors, and a pair of singles
for a 3-0 Eagles lead.

Brooke Koenigsman pulled the Monarchs within a run in the
bottom of the third inning with a two-run home run. But she suffered an injury
stepping on home plate and was forced to leave the game.

The Monarchs tied the ball game at three with one out in the
bottom of the fourth inning on a Piper Simpson RBI single.

Adi Gottschalk’s sacrifice fly broke the tie and gave the Monarchs
a 4-3.

🥎 TMP-Marian downs Ellinwood in home doubleheader

HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State men's golf team placed fifth out of 18 teams at the 2025 FHSU Tiger Classic this week (March 31-April 1) at Smoky Hill CC, finishing the three-round event at 32-over 872 as a team.

Fort Hays State sat in second place by just two shots after the first round, firing a 1-over 281 in the opening round. Conditions worsened late in the day on Monday and into Tuesday when round two concluded, with the Tigers posting a 22-over 302 in the second round to fall into sixth place. FHSU moved past Washburn and Colorado School of Mines, who both rank in the top 60 nationally, with a final round total of 9-over 279 to finish in fifth place overall and fourth amongst MIAA competition.

Cooper Scheck&nbsp;tied for third in the field of 100 players, fighting cold and windy conditions to finish the week at 2-over 212. The junior opened the week with a 3-under 67 in a round that featured five birdies, 11 pars and two bogeys. Scheck followed that up with a 4-over 74 in the second round before finishing the week with a 1-over 71 in round three.

Scheck tied for second against MIAA competition, moving him into third place in the MIAA designated event point standings with 26.5 points through three events. The top 15 players in the point standings earn all-conference recognition after the conclusion of the MIAA Championships.

Senior Cole Streck&nbsp;put together his third top-10 finish of the season, finishing the week in a tie for eighth place at 5-over. Streck led the team with 10 sub-par holes across the 54 holes, including a hole-out eagle on the par-5 sixth hole and nine birdies.

The Great Bend, Kan. native posted rounds of 2-over 72 and 3-over 73 before finishing the tournament with an even-par 70 in round three. He was one of 10 players in the field to post an even-par or better round in the tough conditions of round three. Streck tied for sixth against league opponents, helping him move into a tie for 14th in the league points standings with 10.5 points.

Jackson Rader&nbsp;opened the week with a 1-under 69 in the opening round before turning in rounds of 76 and 77 to finish in a tie for 34th at 12-over. The senior carded six birdies, including four birdies on par-5s.<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-golf/roster/jacob-george/8545">Jacob George</a>&nbsp;signed for rounds of 5-over 75 and 9-over 79 before grinding out a 1-over 71 in the final round, tied for the 11th-best score in the third round. George had five birdies on the week, including three on the back nine in his first round. He finished 15-over for the week, tied for 47th place.

Parker Krob&nbsp;rounded out the Tiger lineup in a tie for 69th at 19-over after rounds of 3-over 73, 9-over 79 and 7-over 77. Krob totaled three birdies in his opening round before finishing the week with four birdies.

Competing as an individual, JOrdan McCaslin&nbsp;tied for the team lead with nine birdies on the week. The sophomore recorded three-straight birdies in the final round on holes five, six and seven. McCaslin posted a 5-over 75 in both the first and second rounds before signing for a 7-over 77 in the final round, finishing in a tie for 63rd at 17-over.

Ashton Dowell&nbsp;finished the week at 27-over after rounds of 74, 85 and 78, with&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-golf/roster/isaak-bowman/8560">Isaak Bowman</a>&nbsp;turning in a total score of 33-over in his Tiger debut with rounds of 77, 85 and 81. Tyler Cassaday&nbsp;fired a cumulative score of 35-over with rounds of 76, 83 and 86, while Ben Deges was 39-over with rounds of 84, 78 and 87.

Fifth-ranked Central Oklahoma claimed the team title with a three-round total of 10-over 850, 16 shots in front of second place Newman. The Bronchos fired the only sub-par team round of the tournament in the first round, shooting 1-under 279. UCO's Jordan Wilson won the individual title by eight strokes, finishing the week 7-under thanks to rounds of 3-under 67, 1-over 71 and 5-under 65.

This is the second time the Tigers have finished fourth against MIAA teams at a designated event this season (The Mule), which is the highest FHSU had finished at a designated event since 2013. The Tigers now rank sixth in the league point standings with only the MIAA Championship yet to be played. FHSU has 18 points, just 5.5 points behind second place.

The Tigers will wrap up the regular season next week at the Firekeeper Open hosted by Washburn at Firekeeper Golf Course in Mayetta, Kan. before jumping into the postseason April 21-23 with the MIAA Championships.

HAYS, Kan. – No. 26 Fort Hays State delivered a thrilling comeback victory on Tuesday afternoon at Larks Park, walking off Washburn 4-1 thanks to a three-run blast from Sebastian Burgos&nbsp;in the bottom of the ninth. It was the second time the Tigers used a ninth inning rally to beat the Ichabods. Two weeks ago in Topeka they scored five in the top of the ninth for a 7-5 comeback win.

Both starting pitchers were in command from the start. Cade Flaherty, making his first start since March 15 after an arm injury,&nbsp;scattered three hits over 5 2/3 innings, allowing just one run while striking out five. Washburn's Caleb Lunnon was even sharper, holding the Tigers to just one hit through seven scoreless frames while striking out five.

Washburn broke through in the top of the sixth. Cash Jay worked a leadoff walk, Hayden Priest laid down a well-executed sacrifice bunt, moving Jay into scoring position. With two outs, Jett Buck ripped a double down the right-field line to give the Ichabods a 1-0 lead.

Fort Hays State turned to its bullpen, bringing in Kaleb Carpenter, who got a key lineout to limit Washburn to just the one run. Carpenter tossed a scoreless seventh before Friday starter, Ty Riley&nbsp;came in relief in&nbsp;the eighth. He was able to retire six straight batters to keep the Tigers within a run.

Mary Frances (Gnad) Ramey, 70, formerly of Hays, died
Saturday, March 29, 2025 at Homestead of Wichita. 

She was born March 23, 1955 in Ellis, Kansas, the
daughter of John and Katherine (Honas) Gnad.&nbsp;
Mary graduated from Ellis High School, and she graduated Fort Hays State
University where she earned two Master’s Degrees in Communications and
Counseling.

In her early 20s, she moved to Muskogee, Oklahoma
where she met her husband Alvin Ramey. There they had a son, Scott, and six
years later, a daughter Jennifer.&nbsp; Soon
after, wanting to raise them in a small town, she and Alvin moved back to her
roots of Ellis. Years later, they moved to Hays for work, and for over ten
years, Mary worked at LINK Inc.&nbsp; Her
final career; however, was at Hays Area Agency on Aging where she enjoyed
helping the senior community with their Medicare options.

She will be remembered for being a very hard working,
smart and compassionate woman, a loving and understanding mother, and a
reliable, fun sister, who was always laughing and singing. She was an avid
garage seller, antique collector, and bingo attendee.

Survivors include her daughter, Jennifer, and seven
siblings, Michael (Laytha) Gnad of Hays, Shirley (Jim) Dinkel of Victoria,
David (Carolyn) Gnad of Kansas City, Martie (Ray) Nunemaker of Minneapolis,
Patrick (Cheryl) Gnad of Maize, Kathie (Mark) Moravek, of Assaria, and John
(Pam) Gnad of Ellis.

She was preceded in death by her husband Alvin, her
son Scott, her parents John and Katherine, and three siblings, Donna, Grace and
Marvin.

Funeral Services will be at 10:00 am on Monday, April
7, 2025 at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home with Pastor Brenda Rodger
officiating.&nbsp; Inurnment will follow in
the Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery in WaKeeney.&nbsp;
The family will receive friends from 9:00 am until service time at the

A Hays man was arrested March 26 after allegedly punching a woman in the face.

Hays Police Chief Don Scheibler said 48-year-old Timothy Michael Weatherbie allegedly struck a woman in the alley behind 20O block West Seventh Street.

According to witnesses, the incident happened after a verbal argument between the two subjects.

The woman sustained a laceration to her lip and potential bruising but declined medical treatment. According to Scheibler, the victim did not know Weatherbie.

Weatherbie&nbsp;was arrested on a battery charge.

Carla Josephine Hattan passed away March 30, 2025, at her home
after complications from a decade long battle with Dementia/Alzheimer's disease.

She was born in Hays, Kansas to Lyle and Mary Jo (Wolf) Stroup on
September 6, 1957.

Carla spent a large portion of her childhood in Alberta Province,
Canada, but also in Kansas, Texas and Wyoming, moving to Hays, Kansas when she
was a freshman in high school. Carla graduated from Hays High School in 1975.
She graduated from Fort Hays State University with a bachelor's degree in
secondary education and a master's degree in counseling. She earned a Ph.D.
from Kansas State University in counselor education.

Carla taught at TMP-Marion High School before becoming the
guidance counselor at Ness City High School. She started working at Fort Hays
State University in 1987. She served as assistant director of placement and
development and assistant director of the Kelly Center prior to joining the
teaching faculty in the administration and counseling education department. She
was the first instructor to use blackboard online learning at Fort Hays State
University. She was named Counselor Educator of the year. She was a member of
the 1st Leadership Hays class. She also served on the United Way Board of
Directors. Upon her retirement, she was named Professor Emeritus at Fort Hays
State University. An award in the counselor education department was named in
her honor, known as the Carla Hattan Outstanding Student Award.

Carla married Dr. Michael Hattan on June 28, 1986. To this union
two children were born, Holly Muriel and Ross Michael. Carla was a great lover
of animals and always had multiple pets. She enjoyed going to all her
children's activities and her life revolved around her children. Carla was also
very talented. In her younger years she played guitar at Guitar Masses and was
choreographer one year for "Sweet and Sour Krauts" variety show. She
also enjoyed traveling, going on many trips throughout the years. Carla was a
very kind, caring, loving individual who definitely cared about people.

Carla is survived by her husband Mike, daughter Holly (Dalton)
Converse, Manhattan, Kansas, son Ross Hattan, Wichita, Kansas, granddaughter
Elayna Converse, her mother, Mary Jo Stroup, one sister Lila (Ron) Nelson, two
brothers Tony Stroup and Paul (Sara) Stroup, all of Hays, several nieces and
nephews.

Carla was preceded in death by her father Lyle Stroup and infant
brother Daniel and niece Laura Stroup.

Hays Chief of Police Don Scheibler has announced the promotion of Tim Greenwood to deputy chief of police, effective immediately.&nbsp;

Greenwood brings more than 27 years of experience in law enforcement, all of it with the Hays Police Department. His service spans from patrol duties to advanced tactical leadership and department training.

“Tim Greenwood has consistently demonstrated strong leadership and a deep commitment to the community,” Scheibler said. “He has a wealth of experience and a proven track record of helping the department move forward.”

Greenwood began his career with the department as a patrol officer in 1998. He was promoted to sergeant in 2010 and served in that role until 2015.&nbsp;

He was then promoted to lieutenant, a position he held until his recent promotion. Greenwood has also served as the department’s training coordinator since 2013, overseeing officer development and continuing education.

In addition to his supervisory roles, Greenwood has long been involved with the department’s Special Situation Response Team. He served as SSRT Team Leader from 2005 to 2011 and has been the SSRT Commander since 2011.

“His experience in tactical leadership and training has been essential to the department’s readiness and performance,” Scheibler said. “We’re excited to have him step into this new role.”

Greenwood has a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Fort Hays State University and has completed several professional development programs, including the Kansas University Certified Public Manager Program and the Kansas Police Administrator Seminar through Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center.&nbsp;

He is also a graduate of Leadership Hays.

Beyond his duties in the department, Greenwood is serving as president of the Kansas Peace Officers Association. He has been a member of the organization’s executive board since 2020 and previously served on its legislative committee.

“Tim’s leadership has earned him respect across the state,” Scheibler said. “His involvement at the state level has brought valuable insight to our department and reflects his ongoing commitment to the law enforcement profession.”

A veteran of the United States Marine Corps, Greenwood’s background in public service extends beyond law enforcement and reflects his strong sense of duty.

Greenwood’s promotion follows the departure of former Deputy Chief Brian Dawson, who retired in March after more than 25 years of service to the city of Hays.&nbsp;

Greenwood will assume command responsibilities in his new role while continuing to support department training and strategic initiatives.

The deputy chief position serves as second-in-command of the Hays Police Department and is responsible for administrative oversight, operations coordination and departmental policy implementation.&nbsp;

“Tim is ready to take on this leadership role,” Scheibler said. “He knows our department, he understands our community, and he’s ready to help shape the future of public safety in Hays.”

The Fort Hays State women's basketball team remained in the Top 25 of both the WBCA and D2CSC Top 25 Polls to finish the 2024-25 season. FHSU ranked No. 12 in the WBCA Top 25 and No. 16 in the D2CSC Top 25. The Tigers had an overall record of 28-5 and advanced to the semifinals of the Central Regional in the NCAA Tournament.
