🥎 TMP-Marian downs Ellinwood in home doubleheader

HAYS – The TMP-Marian softball team picked up two more wins Tuesday in a doubleheader sweep of Ellinwood, improving their record to 4-0 to start the season.

GAME 1: TMP 12, Ellinwood 1
In the first game of the doubleheader, every Monarchs hitter, except for one, collected a base hit, and TMP doubled the Eagles' hit total in a 12-1 run-rule victory.

Brynn Rebel got the action started for the Monarchs. After she recorded two of her seven strikeouts in the first inning, she led off the bottom of the first with a solo homerun, the third of her career, putting TMP up 1-0.

She struck out two more in the top of the second, and then Ellinwood missed played a long flyball in center field off the bat of Teagan Gottschalk, who eventually came in to score, extending TMP’s lead to 2-0.

TMP scored off two more Ellinwood errors in the inning, and Brooke Koenigsman added an RBI double, while Bria Windholz had an RBI single, as TMP led 6-0 through two innings.

Following a scoreless third, the Monarchs' offense exploded for six more runs in the fourth inning.

Four straight singles to open the inning led to RBIs for Koenigsman and Windholz. A Gottschalk single with one out in the inning put TMP up 10-0.

TMP also added a run on a Raegan Allen pop out and a Molly Helget double for a 12-0 lead heading into the fifth.

Ellinwood was also to record their only run of the game in the top of the fifth inning, but TMP held on for the 12-1 victory.

Brynn Rebel allowed just one run on seven hits, striking out seven.

Brooke Koenigsman finished three-for-three with two runs and two RBI’s. Bria Windholz was two-for-three with two runs and two RBI’s.

GAME 2: TMP 6, Ellinwood 5
The Monarchs rallied from an early three-run deficit, and Piper Simson recorded three hits in a 6-5 win over the Eagles in the final game of the doubleheader.

With the game scoreless through the first two innings, Ellinwood took advantage of two walks, two TMP errors, and a pair of singles for a 3-0 Eagles lead.

Brooke Koenigsman pulled the Monarchs within a run in the bottom of the third inning with a two-run home run. But she suffered an injury stepping on home plate and was forced to leave the game.

The Monarchs tied the ball game at three with one out in the bottom of the fourth inning on a Piper Simpson RBI single.

Adi Gottschalk’s sacrifice fly broke the tie and gave the Monarchs a 4-3.

Brynn Rebel added an RBI triple, putting TMP up 5-3 through four innings.

Simpson added an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth inning, giving the team a 6-3 lead.

Ellinwood hit a two-run home run in the top of the seventh, but the Monarchs held on for a 6-5 victory.

Piper Simson finished 3-for-3 with two RBI’s and a run scored. Brooke Koenigsman added two RBI, and she and Paige Koenigsman each collected two hits.

Bria Windholz moved to 2-0 on the season. She allowed five runs, two earned, on five hits with four walks and nine strikeouts in seven innings.
