⚾ Indians hold off Great Bend in WAC opener

HAYS – The Hays High baseball team scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning then worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh to beat No. 4 Great Bend 5-4 to open Western Athletic Conference play Tuesday at Leo-Harper Field.

The Indians (2-1, 1-0 WAC) grabbed the lead on a two-run homer from Jonathan Cano in the third. Cano singled with two outs in the fifth then scored on a Cooper Johnson two-run double to push the lead to 3-0.

Great Bend answered with four runs in top of the sixth to take a 4-3 lead.

The Indians came right back with two in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead. They scored the tying run on an error and the go-ahead run on a balk.

The Panthers used two walks and a single to load the bases with two outs in the seventh but a groundout to short ended the game.

Carter Graham (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings of relief and picked up the win. Starter Cooper Johnson allowed two runs on two hits with six strikeouts and one walk over five innings. Cano allowed two runs on two hits without recording an out in the sixth but went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored at the plate.
