⚾Monarchs' pitching leads the way in sweep of Plainville

HAYS - Hays High (8-4, 7-1) completed their three game season series with Dodge City (6-7, 1-4) with a doubleheader at home on Tuesday at Leo-Harper Field. The Indians scored in double figures in both games, winning 12-3 and 11-6.

Game 1: Hays High 13, Dodge City 3 Hays High scored in five of six innings for a 13-3 win over Dodge City. The Indians gave up three runs in the top of the first and then answered with three of their own to tie the game.

Hays scored six more in the bottom of the second to grab firm control of the game at 9-3. A single tally in the third inning made the score 10-3. The Indians added on three more runs during the fifth and sixth innings for a 13-3 run-rule victory.

Johnny Cano scored three runs and drove in three more. Carter Graham and Brett Rhoades each scored two and drove in two. They each had two hits. Landon Hardman tallied two hits and two runs while Weston Werth scored two runs.

Tiger Johnson pitched the first two innings allowing three runs but none earned. Johnny Cano (2-1) pitched three innings of hitless ball for the victory. Ian McGuire pitched the sixth inning.

Game 2: Hays 11, Dodge City 6 All of the fireworks came in the first three innings as Hays High took an 11-0 lead enroute to a 11-6 victory.

The Indians batted around in the first inning scoring five runs. Then sent ten to the plate in a ten run third inning. Hays added a run in between during the second innings.

That would be all the scoring though for Hays. Dodge City scored four in the fourth and two in the sixth inning. The Indians also worked themselves out of a some potential trouble with some defensive gems. Ian McGuire made a sliding catch to rob a hit and right fielder Landon Hardman threw out two would be singles at first base.

Hays Carter Graham and Brett Rhoades each had three hits. Both had a pair of doubles and Rhoades added one of three triples for the Indians who had 17 hits in the victory. Trace Jacobs and Bennett Smith also had triples.

Tiger Johnson, Jacobs, Jalen Smith, Bennett Smith and Landon Hardman had two hits each.

The Indians used four pitchers. Carter Graham (2-1) threw the first two innings facing the minimum batters for the victory. Jalen Smith worked two innings, Trenton Welch struck out three in his one inning of work and Brett Rhoades pitched the last two innings.

Hays heads to DeSoto on Friday to face Kansas City-Piper and Spring Hill.

⚾ Hays sweeps Dodge City to keep WAC lead

HAYS, Kan. – For the first time since the 2010 season, the Fort Hays State Baseball team reached 30 wins in a season on Tuesday (Apr. 22) in a 12-4 win over Emporia State. The No. 21 ranked Tigers moved to 30-11 overall on the season and 24-6 in the MIAA with the win and swept the regular season series with the Hornets. Emporia State moved to 21-20 overall and 14-16 in the MIAA.

Cade Flaherty&nbsp;had a strong outing on the mound for FHSU, allowing just one run through seven innings of work. He escaped a bases-loaded jam in the second with just one run allowed and settled in from that point to hold the Hornets scoreless over the next five innings.

With Flaherty getting stronger on the hill, the Tiger offense came alive with two outs in the third inning when Isaiah Ural&nbsp;singled and Trey DeGarmo&nbsp;followed with an RBI triple to the right-center gap. The Tigers moved into the lead in the fourth inning with three more runs. A muffed throw by the Hornet first baseman on a sacrifice bunt by Cesar Saavedra&nbsp;set up the scoring opportunity as Cooper Howell&nbsp;drilled a 2-RBI triple to the left-center gap. Zane Knox&nbsp;followed with an RBI groundout. Ural extended the Tiger lead to four in the seventh with a solo home run to left-center field.

Flaherty finally ran out of gas in the eighth inning as the Hornets loaded the bases with one out. Brandon Chavez&nbsp;entered for a save opportunity and the Hornets pushed all three runs charged to Flaherty across the plate, but Chavez got a strikeout and a groundout to keep the Tigers in front 5-4.

After the tense moments in the top of the eighth, the Tiger offense erupted for seven runs in the bottom half of the inning to run away with the victory. Sebastian Burgos&nbsp;knocked in the first run with an RBI single and Ural had a sacrifice fly RBI to make it 7-4. The inning extended when the ESU center fielder dropped what would have been the third out, allowing two more runs to score. Elliott Herrmann&nbsp;followed with an RBI single and Saavedra had a 2-RBI double.

Chavez held the Hornets scoreless in the ninth for his ninth save of the season. Flaherty moved to 4-1 overall on the season with a 135-pitch effort on the mound. He scattered six hits and walked five, while striking out two. Emporia State used seven pitchers and the loss went to the first reliever of the game, Coby Rogers, who allowed four runs to the Tigers (three earned) in 1.1 innings of work.

With the win, Fort Hays State took&nbsp; a half-game lead over Central Missouri who plays their midweek Wednesday against Washburn. 

The Tigers will host Northwest Missouri State this weekend for the final home games of the regular season, set for Friday through Sunday. Pack the Park will be Friday night at 7 p.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Susan 'Jackie Sue' Hertel, age 72, of Hays, Kansas, passed away
peacefully surrounded by family and friends on Sunday, March 30, 2025, in Hays.
She was born on May 2, 1952, in Hays to Gerald and Hedwig (Leikam) Allen.


Jackie worked for Travenol in Hays and then Dillons, where she worked as a
checker and then in the bakery department before retiring. She enjoyed cooking,
quilting and gardening in her spare time. She was a member of St. Joseph’s
Catholic Church in Hays

 Family had always meant the most to Jackie. No matter what, family came first.
Even in the final parts of her life as she was managing a liver disease, all it
took to get a smile on an otherwise gloomy day was a picture of a grandchild or
her hearing of a recent grandchild's accomplishment. She always did what she
could to try and be a part of their lives without hesitation or regret

 She is survived by her sons, Fredrick Hertel of Kansas City, KS, Patrick Hertel
(Angela Pruett) of Hays, Steven Hertel of Independence, Missouri and Matthew
Hertel of Washington, D.C.; two brothers, Stanley Allen (Karen) of Hays and
Robert Allen (Sam) of Colonial Heights, VA; a sister, Rosa Lee (Allen)
Mewhinney of Hays; and her grandchildren, Alyssa (Hertel) Gafner (Chase), CJ
Hertel, Annie Hertel, Colton Hertel and Westen Hertel

 Jackie was preceded in death by her mother, a son, Curtis Hertel, and a
brother, Phillip Allen.


A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Saturday, April 26th, 2025, at 10:00 A.M.
at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 215 W. 13th, Hays. Inurnment will follow in
the St. Joseph Cemetery in Hays. A funeral reception will take place following
inurnment at VFW Post 9076. All are welcome

 Memorial visitation will be on Friday at Keithley Funeral Homes-Brock’s Chapel
with a combined parish vigil and rosary service at 7:00 PM.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Fort Hays State baseball moved up to No. 21 in the latest ABCA Top 30 Poll, released on Tuesday. The Tigers moved up two spots after holding the No. 23 ranking last week. The No. 21 ranking is their highest of the season so far in the ABCA Poll, while they have been ranked as high as No. 20 in the NCBWA Poll. The Tigers have been in the ABCA top 30 each of the last six weeks.

Fort Hays State is one of four teams from the MIAA currently ranked in the Top 30 of the ABCA Poll. Central Missouri is ranked No. 5 in the latest poll, while Pittsburg State is No. 25 and Central Oklahoma is No. 30.

At 29-11 overall, Fort Hays State is on the cusp of reaching the 30-win mark in a season for the first time since 2010, when it finished with a 31-22 record. The 30-win mark was a yearly standard FHSU hit for 15-straight years from 1993 to 2007, and then the 2009 and 2010 seasons to make a total of 17 times in 18 years. The Tigers produced at least 40 in a season six times in that 15-year span from 1993 to 2007.

Fort Hays State is currently tied for the MIAA lead with Central Missouri, both at 23-6 in conference play. Both are two games ahead of Pittsburg State, which is 21-8, and 3.5 games ahead of Central Oklahoma, which is 21-11.Fort Hays State plays four games at home this week, starting with their final game of three in the regular season against Emporia State on Tuesday. 

The Tigers host Northwest Missouri State for a three-game conference series this weekend (Apr. 25-27).&nbsp;&nbsp;

Lawrence M. 'Larry' Koirth, 75, Munjor, died Monday April
21, 2025 at his home surrounded by his family.

He was born November 27, 1949 in Denver, Colorado, the son
of Irving M. and Rosemary “Rosie” (Younger) Koirth.&nbsp; Larry graduated from Hays High School in 1968
and served in the U.S. Army Reserves for six years.&nbsp; On August 22, 1970 he was united in marriage
to Gloria Pfannenstiel at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Munjor.&nbsp; For 47 years he was part owner of Oldham
Sales and after his retirement, he worked part-time for John Dreiling Field
Services.&nbsp; Larry was a member of St.
Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, and enjoyed restoring vehicles as well as
going to and participating in car shows.&nbsp;
Larry loved his family, his corgi Ginger was his pride and joy, and he
always enjoyed afternoons on the porch drinking a Michelob Ultra with Gloria
and welcoming friends who would stop by to visit.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Survivors include his wife Gloria of Munjor, his son, Curtis
Koirth and wife Kassy of Goddard, daughter Brandi Zimmerman and husband Brandon
of Hays, sister, Etta Ann Wilkerson and husband Tom of Sherman, Texas, seven
grandchildren, Ashley Little and husband Colin of Pratt, Sydney Parsons and
husband Thomas of Pratt, Korrtney and Kaizly Koirth, both of Goddard, Austin
Zimmerman and fiancé Quinlan Weigel, Mika Zimmerman, and Jerzi Zimmerman, all
of Hays, three step grandchildren, Garret Oneyear of Lubbock, Texas, Kally
Oneyear of Wichita, and Drake VanScoyoc of Hays, and four great grandchildren,
Gavin Koirth, Weston Little, Brogan Little, and Ella Parsons, all of Pratt. &nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers,
Robert and Phillip Koirth.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am on Friday,
April 25, 2025 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Munjor with Fr.
Damian Richards officiating.&nbsp; The family
will receive friends from 9:00 am until service time with recitation of the
rosary at 9:30, all the church.&nbsp;
Inurnment will be at a later date in St. Francis Cemetery.&nbsp; Memorials are suggested to HaysMed Hospice,

🎧 Eagle Radio, Hull sports broadcast schedule

HAYS, Kan. - Fort Hays State University Athletics will pay tribute to the 1974 Tiger Baseball team for its historic achievement prior to the 7 p.m. game against Northwest Missouri State University on April 25 at Larks Park. The recognition will be a part of the annual Pack the Park event. The team was the first at FHSU to play in a national baseball tournament, specifically the NAIA National Baseball Tournament, now known as the NAIA College World Series.

That season the Tigers won the NAIA District 10 Playoffs, defeating Bethany College, Emporia State, and Benedictine College to reach the NAIA Area 3 Playoffs in Oklahoma City. The Tigers then defeated Kearney State and Southeastern Oklahoma twice to reach the NAIA championship site in St. Joseph, Mo. They fell to Sam Houston State and Wisconsin-Oshkosh at the championship site, wrapping their season at 26-18 overall. The Tigers finished the year at No. 7 in the NAIA national rankings.

It has been 51 years since the 1974 season, yet all 16 players on the team's postseason roster will be in attendance and recognized at Larks Park on Friday night prior to the annual Pack the Park game. The team featured just one senior and the rest were underclassmen.

Guiding the Tigers to the national tournament was Earl Hobbs (1929-2013) who coached the Tigers from 1967-1976. Both of his assistant coaches, Rod Ruder (1951-2021) and Frank Leo, were graduates of FHSU and were eventually inducted into the Tiger Sports Hall of Fame. "We were truly fortunate to have had the opportunity to play for them," commented Brad Rumble. "What they did to help the team reach the national tournament and become part of FHSU baseball history is something we will never forget."

The team was the first at FHSU to play in a national baseball tournament, specifically the NAIA National Baseball Tournament, now known as the NAIA College World Series.That season the Tigers won the NAIA District 10 Playoffs, defeating Bethany College, Emporia State, and Benedictine College to reach the NAIA Area 3 Playoffs in Oklahoma City. The Tigers then defeated Kearney State and Southeastern Oklahoma twice to reach the NAIA championship site in St. Joseph, Mo. They fell to Sam Houston State and Wisconsin-Oshkosh at the championship site, wrapping their season at 26-18 overall. The Tigers finished the year at No. 7 in the NAIA national rankings.It has been 51 years since the 1974 season, yet all 16 players on the team's postseason roster will be in attendance and recognized at Larks Park on Friday night prior to the annual Pack the Park game. "We were truly fortunate to have had the opportunity to play for them," commented Brad Rumble. "What they did to help the team reach the national tournament and become part of FHSU baseball history is something we will never forget."

The Hays USD 489 school board approved a&nbsp;$799,728 purchase of a new English curriculum for kindergarten through 12th grades from Savvas Learning Company at its meeting Monday night.

The district has been saving money from fees in a reserve account for the anticipated purchase of this updated curriculum.

The cost includes both digital and print student materials, as well as teacher materials, for six years.

The district will implement the curriculum this fall.

The board approved marketing partnerships for advertising on the new Hays High School and Hays Middle School scoreboards.

The Hays Middle School scoreboards will have static advertising. Those signs were sold on 10-year contracts. The money from those ads was used to buy new wrestling mats for the middle school.

The new Hays High School will have video scoreboards on the football field and in the new competition gym. These scoreboards had opportunities for both static signs and digital advertising.&nbsp;

These contracts were sold for three years. Those funds will be placed in the district's capital outlay fund to cover the cost of the high school scoreboards.

Chris Hipp, USD 489 superintendent of business services, said once the scoreboard costs are recouped, advertising revenue will continue to be deposited in the capital outlay fund for future capital projects of the board's choosing.

All of the HMS scoreboard advertising has been sold, but some advertising packages for the Hays High scoreboards are still available, Ron Wilson, USD 489 superintendent, said.

Wilson also reported high winds recently damaged a soccer scoreboard. That scoreboard was installed about a year ago and was funded through donations.

The district will work with the sign and insurance companies to determine options for replacing or repairing the scoreboard, he said.

The board also approved capacity for the enrollment of nonresident students for the 2025-26 school year. This is required annually to meet state open enrollment rules.

Hays USD 489 school board approves new $800,000 English curriculum

Hays Community Theater has announced the cast for its summer musical, “Mamma Mia!,” which will be performed on July 24-26 at Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center.

Written by Catherine Johnson and featuring the music of ABBA, HCT’s production will have a cast of 36 under the direction of Pamela Grizzell. Music director will be Amy Staab, while Bill Gasper will serve as assistant director.

“Mamma Mia!” became a huge hit onstage and then on film, first opening in London in 1999. The musical’s first New York engagement ran for 5,773 performances from 2001 to 2015, which made it the ninth-longest-running show in Broadway history. Its 50 productions around the world, in 16 languages, have been seen by more than 70 million people.

The local performance of the smash hit precedes a return of the musical to Broadway this summer when it opens Aug. 2 for a limited run at the Winter Garden Theatre, its original Broadway home.

“I am deeply privileged for the opportunity to direct ‘Mamma Mia!,’” Grizzell said. “I look forward to a fantastic summer working with a company of very talented musical actors.”

Grizzell said the story takes place on a mythical Greek island in the present day, and centers around a young girl named Sophie who dreams of a wedding with her father giving her away at the altar. 

Problem is, she doesn't know who her dad is — and she's getting married the next day. As the show begins, she explains to her chums that her mum, Donna, fell into the arms of three men within a short space of time. So she's got three possible dads and has invited them all to the wedding.

Auditions for this summer’s performance took place in mid-March with rehearsals set to begin in June. Tickets will be available at a later date at <a href="https://www.hctks.com/">https://www.hctks.com/</a>

“In 1979, I was just a kid making that transition from listening to my grandparent’s Rat Pack vinyls to modern music of the time,” Grizzell said. 

“I was captivated by the dazzle of disco balls and the sound of artists like ABBA, Blonde, Styx and Fleetwood Mac. For me, ‘Mamma Mia!’ is one big dance party that you don’t want to miss. Anyone who was a kid in that era can’t help but be swept up by its musical charm.”

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State pitcher Paul Panduro&nbsp;was named the MIAA Pitcher of the Week on Monday after a strong performance in his start at Newman University last weekend. Panduro is the fourth FHSU baseball player to receive an Athlete of the Week honor this season, joining Elliott Herrmann (Hitter of the Week - Feb. 3), Cade Flaherty&nbsp;(Pitcher of the Week – Feb. 25), and Trey DeGarmo&nbsp;(Hitter of the Week – Mar. 17).

Panduro hurled eight shutout innings against Newman on Friday (Apr. 18), striking out five batters and allowing just two hits. He held the opposition to a batting average of .077 in the 8-0 win for Fort Hays State, which helped the Tigers even the weekend series before going on to win the series with a game three win. It was Panduro's longest outing of the season and second time he did not allow an earned run in a start this season.

Panduro joins Isaiah Keller of Central Missouri, the MIAA Hitter of the Week, as the weekly honorees from the conference office. Keller had a staggering six home runs and 20 RBIs for the week in four wins for UCM.&nbsp;&nbsp;

resident J.D. Brunnemer passed away on Monday, April 14, 2025, at the Rooks
County Health Center in Plainville, KS at the age of 90.

J.D.
Brunnemer was born July 27, 1934, in Cawker City, KS, the son of Lester
Brunnemer and Evelyn (Haines) Brunnemer. J.D. grew up in Cawker City where he
graduated from and played multiple sports at Cawker City High School. He worked
at his dad’s gas station for many years.&nbsp;
After high school, J.D. attended Kansas Wesleyan University (KWU) where
he played football and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in history education.
While attending KWU, he met and fell in love with his future wife, Henrietta
Prochaska. After graduation, J.D. taught school in Randolph, KS. While
teaching, J.D. also attended Kansas State University where he obtained a
master’s degree in education administration. J.D. was drafted into the United
States Army in 1957. He served in the Army and Army Reserve; he was honorably
discharged in 1963. He was also a member of Cawker City Masonic Lodge
#125.&nbsp; 

J.D. also
taught school in Canton and Kensington and then worked as principal in
Belleville and Morrowville, KS. He eventually became Superintendent of USD 270
in Plainville, KS where he retired after 21 years. After retirement he also
served as superintendent of USD 326 in Logan, KS.&nbsp; 

J.D. loved
sports and the outdoors, especially the Rocky Mountains. He spent many summers
driving his jeep to Colorado and/or Utah where he conquered many 4WD trails
through the mountains and over the high mountain passes.&nbsp; 

J.D. and
Henrietta Prochaska were united in marriage on May 26, 1957, in Simpson,
KS.&nbsp; To this union, two children were
born and both survive, Jay Brunnemer of Plainville, KS and Jill (Brunnemer)
Wells and husband Dan of Hays, KS. He had one granddaughter, Haley (Wells)
Milligan and husband Dan of Manhattan, KS. Two great grandchildren, Maverick
Milligan and Max Milligan and one step-great-grandchild, Jackson Milligan also
survive. J.D. was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and an infant
son.&nbsp; 

Funeral Services was held on Saturday, April 19, 2025, at 1:00 PM at Plumer-Overlease Funeral
Home in Plainville. Graveside will follow at 3:30 PM at the Prairie Grove
Cemetery in Cawker City, KS. Visitation will be held on Friday from 4:00 – 6:00
PM at the funeral home in Plainville.&nbsp;
