WICHITA — Credit Union of America (CUA) has awarded $40,520 in Teach, Grow, and Inspire the Future (TGIF) classroom grants to 49 teachers across Kansas, including in Hays. 

Since its inception in 2000, CUA has contributed more than $565,000 to help educators enhance their curriculum by funding classroom projects, supplies, field trips, and other educational activities that enrich the student experience. Recipients submit applications outlining their classroom funding needs, which are then reviewed anonymously by a team of CUA staff and retired educators. Additional details are available on individual projects by request.

Wilson Elementary teacher receives classroom grant from Credit Union of America

The Hays Public Library celebrated the renovation of the Kansas Room with a Chamber in Hays ribbon cutting on Friday.

The Kansas Room is in the basement of the library. It holds circulating books on Kansas and from Kansas authors and reference materials on local history and genealogy.

The $170,000 project included moving the stacks to the west side of the basement to allow for more seating, programming and study space, Jeremy Gill, Kansas Room coordinator, said.

Brandon Hines, library director, said the Kansas Room is the final piece in a five-year renovation of the entire library. Much of the library had not been updated since the 1960s. The Kansas Room had last been updated in 2004.

Renovations on the first and second floors began in 2020.

Hines said the library staff wanted to create space in the basement where people could study or do research.

"We wanted to create a quiet reference-type space on the lower level because if you have been in the library on the main floor or especially the children's library on the second floor, it's not really the shushing library that you might have grown up with," Hines said. "There's a lot of activity."

Paul-Wertenberger Construction was the general contractor on the project.

Lead donors on the project included the estate of Ann Liston and the Robert E. and Patricia Schmidt Foundation.&nbsp;

Major contributors who gave between $1,000 and $10,000 included Diana Pantle, Ken and Rose Marie Staab, Layton and Jerry Kaiser, Kyle and Stephanie Carlin, Friends of the Hays Library, Carol Vajnar, Sharon Dreher, Heartland Community Foundation, Teget Foundation, Cloud Storage, Kent and Ruth Deines, Jon and Cindy Lightle, the Hines family and&nbsp;Paul-Wertenberger Construction.

Gill said the Kansas Room is officially named the Dorothy B. Richards Kansas Room, which was named for the library director who created the collection as a shelf in the original Carnegie Library in Hays.

The collection grew to a room in the Carnegie Library's basement and was eventually moved to the present library.

"There haven't been a lot of Kansas Room librarians or coordinators over the years, and I really do appreciate the work and effort of all of those different people," Gill said.

The collection also contains rare books, books on the Great Plains, a local photo collection and local yearbooks.

"It's fun to see people go down memory lane with those kinds of things," he said.&nbsp;

The library has a complete collection of Fort Hays State University yearbooks but is missing a few yearbooks from area high schools, or their copies have been well-worn from use, Gill said.

Residents can contact Gill at the library if they want to donate materials to the collection.

The Kansas Room has a bank of computers for research and an overhead scanner for digitizing images.

"I get emails and phone calls from all over the country and sometimes all over the world," Gill said. "It's a really special place."

After COVID, the Kansas Room initiated a coffee hour during which residents can talk to Gill and each other about local history.

That group meets at 10 a.m. Thursday mornings in the Kansas Room.

Hines said, "This place is just a collection of things without people like Jeremy. Jeremy is the one who connects people. He is the one who tells these stories about everything we have. Without people connecting with people, this would not be what it is."

"The Kansas Room is like a lot of other components of the library. It has its own little life. We have the children's area and the young adults' area. It has this life because of the people."

Hays Public Library cuts ribbon on Kansas Room renovation

COLBY —&nbsp;Colby native and former mayor Gary Adrian was awarded the honorary associate degree during the college's 60th commencement ceremony on May 16 at the Colby Event Center.&nbsp;

College personnel nominate individuals for the honorary degree, recognizing distinguished contributions to the community and Colby Community College.

Born in November 1947 in Colby, Adrian is deeply rooted in the area’s history. His great-grandparents were among the first settlers of the community in 1885. He attended first grade in Gem, continued his education in Colby through his sophomore year, and completed high school in Norton. Adrian pursued higher education at Fort Hays State University and the University of Kansas before being drafted into the U.S. Army in 1970.

During his 20 years of military service, Adrian was trained and certified as a medical technologist. After retiring from the Army, he returned to Colby and worked as a medical technologist at hospitals in Colby and Hoxie until his retirement from the medical field in 2006.

In 2011, Adrian was elected mayor of the City of Colby, serving three terms through December 2023.

"Blessed with three outstanding city managers and dedicated city council members, many major accomplishments were made," said Adrian.

The most significant project, he added, was the planning and construction of the Colby Event Center that opened in 2021.

“I am so proud of my hometown, Colby,” Adrian said. “Colby Community College is one of the essential factors for the successful growth and future of Colby. It is an honor to receive this honorary degree from CCC.”

Former Colby mayor receives honorary degree

Back in December I wrote&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://mittelpolitan.substack.com/p/insight-kansas-column-for-december">a column on symbolism and substance in politics</a>. At the time, I was especially struck by the problem of what it means to take political rhetoric—the constant, often bizarre social media statements flooding from the White House being a great example—“seriously but not literally.”

As we continue, both in Kansas and across the country, to be caught up in a political environment filled with protests and proclamations that may or may not be meant to be taken seriously, a return to the topic is in order.

Here in Wichita, the largest stand-alone city in Kansas, the biggest controversy of the past two months has been a declaration which our city council issued in support of Transgender Day of Visibility, a national occasion promoted by LGBTQ organizations. Mayor Lily Wu&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.kansas.com/news/politics-government/article302324064.html">did not endorse that proclamation</a>, though neither did she prevent the majority of council members who did support it from publicly presenting it.

Since&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.kansas.com/news/politics-government/article302386849.html">the relevant city ordinance seems to stipulate that the mayor must formally read any proclamation issued by the council</a>, her action (or lack thereof) has generated&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.kansas.com/opinion/opn-columns-blogs/dion-lefler/article302362364.html">heated debate</a>, including&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.kansas.com/news/politics-government/article302440494.html">multiple</a>&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.kansas.com/news/politics-government/article302929154.html">accusations</a>&nbsp;both by and against the mayor.

I brought up this controversy while speaking to a civic group recently, and one participant asked a question that seemed to capture what the majority of that group seemed to be feeling: why are we fighting about entirely symbolic proclamations anyway? It’s a fair question.

Like I wrote in my previous column, it’s very easy to get frustrated over what might be broadly called “performative politics.” Often that term is used critically: you, or the church or business or interests you represent, don’t have the votes or resources to affect real change, so instead you just “perform” your demands, grabbing attention, disrupting others with your silly, symbolic claims.

But making statements, carrying signs, or organizing on behalf of recognition isn’t silly at all. Rather, these kinds of performative actions occupy a range of places within our political life.

At one end, there are those who possess actual administrative or executive authority: a CEO, a mayor, a governor, or the President of the United States. The statements such people make, even if they’re legally groundless or substantively empty, still matter, because the authority they possess will invariably influence others to take action, even if there is no basis for doing so.

On the other end, though, are just ordinary citizens, possessing no more authority than anyone else. 

But citizens can nonetheless take up a signs to express frustration (as sizable crowds have done almost every week over the past few months in&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.kansas.com/news/local/article305500671.html">Wichita</a>,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.kansascity.com/news/local/article303558496.html">Kansas City</a>,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://hayspost.com/posts/069b4d3f-9ecc-45cb-95df-c5b75b653d08">Hays</a>,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://kansasreflector.com/2025/05/01/may-day-rally-draws-hundreds-to-kansas-capitol-to-protest-trump-administration/">Topeka</a>,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www2.ljworld.com/news/general-news/2025/apr/30/may-day-protest-in-lawrence-and-across-the-u-s-to-oppose-trumps-executive-actions-and-support-workers-rights-social-justice/">Lawrence</a>, and elsewhere), and by so doing capture the attention of others.

Also, any citizen can petition elected leaders to plead for recognition for the work one does, or the identity one represents. If enough agree, then suddenly a degree of legitimacy—and, crucially, the awareness of others—is granted that didn’t exist before, empowering those who made the request.

Over the past decade, as social media has transformed political life, multiple scholars have begun to rethink democratic politics, and the place of performance and spectatorship within it. 

Today we live in an environment where “attention” is often the most valuable commodity anyone can possess. Those who can do the work and organize with others and put themselves forward to make sure their cause is seen (and sometimes their opponents triggered or scandalized), may not be a distraction; instead, maybe they’re doing politics the way it is fated to be played today.

Madison Hanzlick has known for many years that she wanted to go into nursing, and this weekend she will see the culmination of her years of hard work and determination pay off when she receives her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree from Fort Hays State University during the FHSU spring commencement event.

Originally from Hoisington, Hanzlick graduated from high school, moved to Hays, and began to pursue her dream of becoming a nurse in 2017. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) in 2020, applied, was accepted, and began her doctorate program in June 2021. Along with her degrees, Hanzlick has completed the requisite programs, clinical hours, and passed exams for certifications, including Registered Nurse (RN) and Family Nurse Practitioner-Certified (FNP-C).

“I’ve always had a caring personality, and healthcare fit with who I was,” Hanzlick said. “When I was little, I thought I might want to be a pediatrician, but the path to nursing made more sense for me.”

After graduation, Hanzlick is looking forward to working for<a href="https://heartofkansas.com/"> Heart of Kansas Family Health</a>, a federally qualified health center. They are in the process of opening a new satellite campus in St. John, where she plans to work, which is not too far from her current residence in Hoisington. Previously, she worked in critical care and case management in both Hays and McPherson, but her time at Heart of Kansas while working on her clinicals was a deciding factor in what she chose to do next.

“I was able to do clinicals through there during school and enjoyed the patient population, the team, and the atmosphere, and it was a great fit,” Hanzlick said.

Coming from a smaller town and understanding the need for healthcare, particularly in rural western Kansas, Hanzlick was positive that she wanted to eventually practice in that type of setting. It is also one of the reasons she chose Fort Hays State, as the nursing program has an emphasis on rural care.

“I visited several schools with my parents while in high school, some larger than FHSU, and I preferred the smaller setting,” Hanzlick said. “Also, being able to visit with some of the faculty, I could already tell it was going to be comfortable, and a good fit.”

Hanzlick’s time both on campus during her undergraduate work and online while working on her doctorate made a distinct impression on the FHSU faculty. While she worked closely with many faculty members, Dr. Michelle Van Der Wege, associate professor of nursing and the DNP program coordinator, was one of the professors that Madison credits with helping her not only complete all her program requirements but also excel.

“I had the privilege of working with Madison both as an undergraduate nursing student and later as a DNP student, and it has been an honor to watch her grow--first as a registered nurse, and now into a nurse practitioner,” Van Der Wege said. “Madison is intelligent, compassionate, and deeply committed to helping others. Whether in the classroom with her peers or at the clinical site with patients, she is always looking to lend a hand.”

As with many transitions, graduation can be a little bittersweet, especially when facing the change from a familiar, comfortable present into an exciting, if potentially uncertain, future. Hanzlick is taking this change in stride, but already feels nostalgic for this time in her life.

“I love Fort Hays State, and not just the campus, I love the town, the hospital where I worked - I love the Hays community,” Hanzlick said. “When people ask, I tell how much I enjoyed FHSU and the nursing program – I’m always advocating for FHSU.”

While the feelings of loss and change are mutual, everyone looks forward to Hanzlick’s bright future.

“I am excited that [Madison] will be serving rural, western Kansas after graduation,” Van Der Wege said.&nbsp;“She is an outstanding example of how FHSU graduates positively impact rural health!”

New FHSU Hoisington graduate focuses on rural Kansas health care     

The annual Spring Convocation at Fort Hays State University was held May 9. President Tisa Mason and Provost and Vice-President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Jill Arensdorf, recognized the winners of the Spring Semester 2025 faculty and staff awards.

The Navigator Award was presented to Falynn Rogers from the College of Health and Behavioral Sciences. The award was established in 1998 by the Student Government Association to recognize an outstanding academic advisor based on how closely the advisor adheres to the university's goals for academic advising.&nbsp;

Rogers exemplifies the spirit of the Navigator Advising Award through her dedication, communication, and support for her students.

“Falynn goes above and beyond to ensure students understand their educational requirements, feel confident in their goals, and are equipped with the resources they need to succeed,” Arensdorf said.

The Outstanding Graduate Advisor Award recognizes a faculty member who is an advisor of graduate students and provides leadership and service in other activities on campus. The award was presented to Dr. Blake Roth from the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders.

Roth was selected for the award because of his exceptional mentorship and dedication to student success. Multiple students submitted detailed nominations highlighting his consistent support, clear guidance, and commitment to helping them achieve their academic and professional goals.

Cross-Border Educational Excellence Award:

The Cross-Border Education Excellence Award was given to Christopher Adams, Instructor of Leadership in the School of Criminal Justice, Leadership and Sociology. The award was established to recognize an individual who exemplifies excellence in contributing to FHSU students’ academic experiences at a cross-border partner institution.

Adams, who teaches at Shenyang Normal University in China, has significantly impacted his program through his expertise in Chinese education and curriculum development.

Edmund Shearer Faculty Advisor of the Year Award:

The Edmund Shearer Faculty Advisor of the Year Award was presented to Christina Mergen, Academic Advisor in the College of Health and Behavioral Sciences.

The Edmund Shearer Award is presented to individuals who have demonstrated outstanding academic advising of students.&nbsp;Shearer, a former Chair of the Department of Chemistry, was known for the high value he placed on student advisement. One advisor can be recognized from each of the five academic colleges.&nbsp;

Mergen has shown dedication, organization, and leadership values that have impacted FHSU student success.

“She provides personalized, proactive support to students, guiding them through complex academic paths with clarity and care,” Arensdorf said.

With Mergen, fellow nominees for this award included: Debra Staab, Academic Advisor from the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences; and Kristin Hernandez, Academic Advisor from the College of Education.

Spring Outstanding Faculty Award winners:

Dr. Kenton Olliff, Associate Professor of Advanced Education, received the Outstanding Teaching Award.

Dr. Ran An,&nbsp;Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, received the Outstanding Scholarly Activity Award.

Dr. Jennifer Bechard, Assistant Professor in the Department of Health and Human Performance, was selected for the Service Award.

All recipients received a $500 award for their accomplishments, thanks to the generosity and support of Commerce Bank. In addition to the monetary gift, the college deans are providing an additional $250 in the budget of the recipient's department.

Olliff was recognized for integrating clinical expertise, especially in substance abuse counseling, into a student-centered and practice-informed curriculum.

“Kenton’s compassionate, experience-driven approach prepares students for both academic and professional success,” Arensdorf said.

An was recognized for her exceptional research productivity, numerous national and international conference presentations, peer-reviewed publications, and successful grant awards.

“Her work addresses timely, practical issues in speech-language pathology, including culturally responsive assessments and services for underserved communities,” Arensdorf said.

Bechard was recognized with the Outstanding Service Award for her leadership and service at FHSU and beyond.

“Jennifer’s extensive service, including mentoring students and guiding departmental improvements, has significantly impacted both the university and the broader community,” Arensdorf said.

The honorees will join three other faculty members recognized for teaching, research, and scholarly activity in the Fall 2024 semester, as candidates for the Faculty Member-of-the-Year Award. The recipient of the upcoming award, along with a $1,000 prize, will be announced at the Fall Convocation in August.

These six faculty members (spring and fall) are eligible for the award and selected by the Academic Council.

Gus Peine, Hays, and Bryce Steffan, Ellinwood, high school students enrolled in the <a href="https://www.fhsu.edu/kams/">Kansas Academy of Math and Science</a> at Fort Hays State University, lobbied Kansas congressional members and testified before the House Education Committee to pass <a href="https://kslegislature.gov/li/b2025_26/measures/sb114/">Senate Bill 114</a>.

It allows all KAMS students to fully participate in all KSHSAA activities (music, sports, debate, Scholars Bowl, etc.).

 The bill was signed by Governor Laura Kelly on April 7.

The city of Hays plans to issue a public survey to find out whether residents support allowing backyard chickens.

City commissioners discussed a proposed plan Thursday that would allow up to five chickens — but no roosters — in fenced rear or side yards. The hens would have to be kept in a coop, run or other confined structure at all times.&nbsp;

No registration or permitting of the animals would be required, enclosures would be subject to Planning and Development regulations, a home or business must also be located on the lot, and Hays Police community service officers would be in charge of ordinance enforcement.

"It's very simple and straight forward," Collin Bielser, deputy city manager, said of the proposed policy.&nbsp;

The request came from Hays resident&nbsp;<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/2e7d82b6-c371-400e-9093-77c1f565fec0">Tina Sarver, who addressed the commission on March 27</a>&nbsp;about changing the city’s ordinance to allow backyard&nbsp;chickens. She provided research from several other towns, including Plainville.

Other Kansas towns that allow chickens include&nbsp;WaKeeney, Goodland, Salina, Overland Park, Prairie Village, El Dorado and Pratt.

Commissioners had mixed reactions to the proposed ordinance change.&nbsp;

Shaun Musil, who said he grew up raising chickens, opposed the idea.

"I wouldn't want to live next to somebody who wasn't taking care of them properly," he said, "although I think most people would take care of them."

Hays resident Aaron Dreher told the commission he was also against the proposal. 

"If you've ever smelled their coop after your neighbor being on vacation for five days, you're gonna change your mind real fast," he said. "I only see problems with it. There's no pros with it." 

Dreher also said, "If families want to educate their children about chickens, take them to the Sternberg Museum or a farm. ... If you want eggs, buy them at the grocery store."

Commissioner Alaina Cunningham said she had been contacted by Jay Harris, Cottonwood Extension District director, who told her if the ordinance passed, the local office would put together educational materials on how to properly raise chickens and dispose of their waste in an urban setting.

Glenn Cox, Hays resident, spoke in favor of the proposal.

"The odor, I believe, can be controlled. It's only five chickens, and you could always have less," Cox said.

Bielser also noted the possibility of increased predators and agitation of neighboring dogs and cats.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Mayor Sandy Jacobs suggested a simple yes/no poll be created on the city's website to get more public input. The commission plans to vote on the proposal at its June 5 meeting.

The city staff will be releasing an online poll on the issue. Watch the Hays Post for a link when it becomes available.

Airport to temporarily close to flights for runway repair

Airport Director Jamie Salter presented a recommended low bid award for reconstructing the crosswind runway in 2026. It was built in 2003 and is showing signs of extension deterioration.

The low bid came from Smoky Hill, LLC of Salina for $6.67 million. The project is eligible for 95% funding through the Federal Aviation Administration. The city's share would be $333,809.&nbsp;

Runway 4-22 will be closed for the duration of the construction, scheduled for 143 calendar days. The start date will be sometime next spring and conclude in the fall.

The main 16-34 runway will also be closed for about three weeks during that time, which means no airplane flights will be able to arrive or depart the Hays Regional Airport. Helicopter traffic would still be allowed by arrangement.

Commissioners expressed concern the main runway closure.

"All I ask is that we notify the public as soon as we can because there are lots of people who plan their airline travel far in advance," Jacobs said.

A construction engineering services agreement with Lochner, Lenexa, was presented for $445,800. The FAA will pay 95% of the cost, with the city's share at $22,290.

Both items will move on for a vote at the May 22 city commission meeting.&nbsp;

Commissioners also heard from Jess Rohr, public works director, for a rezoning request, final plat and annexation of Covenant Estates 1st Addition in northwest Hays. 

The 20 acres is located&nbsp;on the&nbsp;south end of the field west of Thunderbird between 33rd and 41st streets. It is adjacent to residential property along Thunderbird Drive and&nbsp;Oakmont Street.&nbsp;

Covenant Land &amp; Developing Inc. has requested the rezoning from agriculture to residential general and to be annexed into the city.

The final plat of Phase 1 includes three city blocks with 54 lots.&nbsp;

Rohr said the owner plans to develop the remaining 55 acres of property north of Phase 1 during the next few years.&nbsp;

The Hays Planning Commission has approved all the requests.

The hens would have to be kept in a coop, run or other confined structure at all times.&nbsp;No registration or permitting of the animals would be required, enclosures would be subject to Planning and Development regulations, a home or business must also be located on the lot, and Hays Police community service officers would be in charge of ordinance enforcement."It's very simple and straight forward," Collin Bielser, deputy city manager, said of the proposed policy.&nbsp;The request came from Hays resident&nbsp;<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/2e7d82b6-c371-400e-9093-77c1f565fec0">Tina Sarver, who addressed the commission on March 27</a>&nbsp;about changing the city’s ordinance to allow backyard&nbsp;chickens. "If you've ever smelled their coop after your neighbor being on vacation for five days, you're gonna change your mind real fast," he said. "I only see problems with it. There's no pros with it." Dreher also said, "If families want to educate their children about chickens, take them to the Sternberg Museum or a farm. ... If you want eggs, buy them at the grocery store."Commissioner Alaina Cunningham said she had been contacted by Jay Harris, Cottonwood Extension District director, who told her if the ordinance passed, the local office would put together educational materials on how to properly raise chickens and dispose of their waste in an urban setting.Glenn Cox, Hays resident, spoke in favor of the proposal."The odor, I believe, can be controlled. It's only five chickens, and you could always have less," Cox said.Bielser also noted the possibility of increased predators and agitation of neighboring dogs and cats.&nbsp; &nbsp;Mayor Sandy Jacobs suggested a simple yes/no poll be created on the city's website to get more public input.  </figure><h2>Airport to temporarily close to flights for runway repair</h2>Airport Director Jamie Salter presented a recommended low bid award for reconstructing the crosswind runway in 2026. It was built in 2003 and is showing signs of extension deterioration.<figure>

 </figure>The low bid came from Smoky Hill, LLC of Salina for $6.67 million. The project is eligible for 95% funding through the Federal Aviation Administration. The city's share would be $333,809.&nbsp;Runway 4-22 will be closed for the duration of the construction, scheduled for 143 calendar days. The start date will be sometime next spring and conclude in the fall.The main 16-34 runway will also be closed for about three weeks during that time, which means no airplane flights will be able to arrive or depart the Hays Regional Airport. Helicopter traffic would still be allowed by arrangement.Commissioners expressed concern the main runway closure."All I ask is that we notify the public as soon as we can because there are lots of people who plan their airline travel far in advance," Jacobs said.A construction engineering services agreement with Lochner, Lenexa, was presented for $445,800. The FAA will pay 95% of the cost, with the city's share at $22,290.Both items will move on for a vote at the May 22 city commission meeting.&nbsp;<figure>

The 20 acres is located&nbsp;on the&nbsp;south end of the field west of Thunderbird between 33rd and 41st streets. It is adjacent to residential property along Thunderbird Drive and&nbsp;Oakmont Street.&nbsp;Covenant Land &amp; Developing Inc. has requested the rezoning from agriculture to residential general and to be annexed into the city.The final plat of Phase 1 includes three city blocks with 54 lots.&nbsp;Rohr said the owner plans to develop the remaining 55 acres of property north of Phase 1 during the next few years.&nbsp;The Hays Planning Commission has approved all the requests.

Fort Hays State University's Forsyth Library recently announced that Kelsie Winter, a senior double majoring in criminal justice and biology, is the 2025 recipient of the Lynn Haggard Undergraduate Library Research Award (LHULRA).

The LHULRA is awarded annually in honor of Lynn Haggard, a retired Forsyth librarian who served at Forsyth for 18 years. Applicants must demonstrate sophisticated literacy skills and excellence in undergraduate research that incorporates the use of Forsyth Library resources. 

Winter’s submission highlighted her project, “Investigating Case Attrition Rates for Sexual Assault in Kansas,” which was completed for her CRJ 670 class.&nbsp;This project is also part of a larger research study on sexual assault attrition rates in urban and rural counties across the state, supported by the Undergraduate Research Experience (URE) at FHSU in collaboration with faculty mentor Wendy Rohleder-Sook and student researcher Grace McCord.

Winter’s academic interests include criminal justice and biology, with a focus on the field of forensics.

“I especially love being in the laboratory, gaining hands-on experience, and learning about human anatomy,” Winter said. “I also enjoy researching topics such as forensic evidence, and I have completed research projects such as papers, presentations, and a SACAD poster on this topic.”

Improving the fields of criminal justice and biology through studies of how each discipline influences the other is at the heart of much of Winter’s research.

“Kelsie’s work contributes meaningfully to understanding the systemic and procedural barriers that impact sexual assault case progression,” said Dr. Ziwei Qi, CRJ 670 professor. “And it does so with clarity, compassion, and scholarly integrity.”

Qi pointed out that Winter’s research reflects the qualities that the Lynn Haggard Award seeks to recognize - “intellectual depth, innovative use of library resources, and a meaningful contribution to academic discourse.”

The Lynn Haggard Undergraduate Library Research Award recognizes excellence in undergraduate research that incorporates the use of Forsyth Library resources and demonstrates sophisticated information literacy skills.

Forsyth Library Online Learning Librarian Heather VanDyne said that information literacy is necessary for students to evaluate and use information.

“Library resources not only help students expand their knowledge to assist them in finishing an assignment or passing a course but also help prepare them for their future by building skills and strategies to navigate the world around them,” she said.

The fun run is scheduled for Saturday, June 7 at 8:00 a.m. on the west side of the Hays Aquatic Park (4th and Main). Registration will begin at 7:15 a.m. This run will consist of your choice of a 1 mile run/walk or a 5K run/walk.

There is still time to register for this fun event for an entry fee of only $10 on or before June 4. Cost after June 5 is $12.

The run is for people of all abilities, will not be timed, and the proceeds will go to help support the programs coordinated by the Hays Recreation Commission that support people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The run helps make the programs free or inexpensive for participants.

Entries open for Dash for Disabilities on June 7

LINCOLN, Neb. — Madelyn Martin of Hays has earned a certificate in sales excellence at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and was honored at a May 2 luncheon hosted by the Center for Sales Excellence. Martin is a senior majoring in marketing.

The certificate is designed to enhance communication and relationship-building skills. Skills built in the program attract students from a variety of majors.

"We take great pride in the fact that the center works with students of any major at the university, because we all sell something," said Kathy Farrell, James Jr. and Susan Stuart Endowed Dean and professor of finance in the College of Business. "Whether it's selling our skills to a future employer, selling in our jobs or simply selling our ideas to others, sales skills are valuable. These students have a competitive edge in the job market."

State-of-the-art technology within role-play rooms in the Center for Sales Excellence allows students to practice pitching and receive real-time feedback on their techniques, honing their communication and selling capabilities. Students also participate in regional and national role-play competitions.

"Each of our classes provides hands-on learning experiences," said Ravi Sohi, professor of marketing, Robert D. Hays Distinguished Chair of Sales Excellence and executive director of the Center for Sales Excellence. "Some of these experiences include role-plays, actual sales assignments with target quotas and networking. Through our employer partnerships, we also provide students with access to the sales platforms they'll use on the job, such as Salesforce, a cloud-based customer relationship management software, and xiQ, an AI software platform."

Sohi said more than 95% of sales excellence students have job offers upon graduation. Companies that have recently hired sales students include Dell, Deloitte, Gallup, Hubspot, Mutual of Omaha, NRC Health, Oracle, Sandhills Global, Union Pacific and the Walt Disney Company.

"Companies are pleased with the people they hire from our program and come back for more," Sohi said. "It's the highest compliment. They realize our students have the skills to succeed and are likely to stay longer in sales roles because they want to be in sales."

advance to the matchup with TMP, got their leadoff man on to start the game,

he faced for two scoreless innings on the mound.
