HAYS – The Hays Larks ran their winning streak to seven
games and picked up the series win over the Collegiate Roughriders with a 10-0 win
Saturday night at Larks Park. 

The Larks (22-4-1,&nbsp; 15-4 RMBL) scored four in the first and four in the
seventh for the run rule win. 

Dylan LaRue drove in the first run of the game on a
groundout. Wilbert Espinal followed with an RBI double then scored on Kaleb Duncan’s
triple who later scored on a wild pitch.

Brady Kreutzer entered as a courtesy runner in the third and
stole second and third before scoring on an Espinal groundout which pushed the lead to 5-0.

Duncan scored on Paul Smith’s grounder to center in the sixth
to give the Larks a 6-0 lead. They ended the night early with four in the seventh.
LaRue drove in the first run with a single to left. Kreutzer scored on a Duncan
groundout then Thomas Lyssy hit a two-run homer to end the game.

Taber Stokes, Dylan LaRue and Kaleb Duncan all had two hits.
LaRue, Wilbert Espinal, Duncan, and Thomas Lyssy all drove in two runs.

Nick Gray (5-0) allowed one hit with seven strikeouts and
one walk over five scoreless innings and picked up the win. Julio Ramos closed
out the game with two scoreless innings of relief with seven strikeouts and no
walks. The two combined to strikeout 12 and walk only one.

The Larks and Roughriders close out the four-game series with
a non-league game Sunday at 6:00 p.m.

Colby Community College announces degrees, certificates from 60th commencement

In Loving Memory of Deanna Mary (Ochs) Kennedy

Deanna, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister,
and cherished friend, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loved ones on
July 10, 2025, at the age of 76. Her life was a testament to the power of
kindness, devotion, and unwavering love. Deanna was born on November 4, 1948,
in Quinter, Kansas to Clement &amp; Emma Helen (Gallagher) Ochs &amp; was
raised on the farmstead in southwest Sheridan County.&nbsp; After high school graduation from Sheridan
County High School in 1966, Deanna went on to finish her cosmetology license in
Hays, Kansas.&nbsp; Not long after high school,
Deanna married her high school sweetheart, Max Michael Kennedy on June 10,
1967.&nbsp; Max &amp; Deanna started their
married life in Hays while Max finished his college degree then moved to
Stockton, Kansas where they lived for four years before returning to the farm
in Hoxie, Kansas.

Although Deanna’s greatest joys were spent with her
husband raising their three children, she understood the importance of sharing
her love for others too.&nbsp; She was a woman
whose caring heart knew no limits. Whether it was helping care for an ill
friend, volunteering behind the scenes in her community, or simply sending a
card for every occasion, Deanna always found a way to show others how much she
cared. No birthday, anniversary, or milestone went unacknowledged, and her
thoughtfulness brightened countless lives.

Her love for her family was the center of her world. She
rarely missed a single game or event involving her children and grandchildren.
With her ever-present camera in hand, she captured precious memories, recording
games and taking photos to preserve each moment. At home, she nourished her
family with delicious home-cooked meals with some family favorites of chili,
tacos, sloppy joes, spaghetti, brownies, cookies, homemade hot chocolate and
her famous pecan pies. Thousands of harvest meals were packed with care, always
complete with a mason jar of tea and each one customized with their favorite
candy bar.

Punctual to a fault, she was known to be early to everything,
sometimes sitting in the car honking the horn to hurry her family along. Her
days were filled with simple joys: dancing and traveling with her husband, the
occasional gambling trip, and many years of crushing it in their couple’s
bowling league in Hoxie in the 70s &amp; 80s.&nbsp;
The last fourteen years, mornings were spent at Oscar’s with some dear
friends over a cup of iced tea.

Her community benefitted endlessly from her quiet
dedication. She volunteered for Sodality, the Hospital Auxiliary, carnival &amp;
ballfield concessions, backstage during plays and musicals, and serving on the
SCHS/HHS Alumni Board. She even stepped on the stage of a few NEC productions
many years ago. She never sought recognition—only the satisfaction of helping
others and seeing her community thrive.

Deanna loved deeply and
worried often, always making sure everyone was safe, happy, and cared for. She
leaves behind a legacy of generosity and love that will forever inspire all who
knew her.&nbsp; Deanna is survived by her
husband, Max Kennedy, son Brad Kennedy and fiancé Crystal, Hoxie, son Scott and
wife Tanya Kennedy, Hoxie, and daughter Jodi and husband Brent Rogers, Hoxie,
grandchildren Ashley (Jesse) Miller, Chase (Gabi) Kennedy, Jared Kennedy, Lane
(Jaiden) Kennedy, Josey Kennedy, Mercedes Kennedy, Preston Kennedy, Brookelyn
Kennedy, Paiton Rogers, &amp; Kinley Rogers; and great-grandchildren, Maddi,
Marcus and Jordyn Miller, Amelia and Bodie Kennedy, and Ada Kennedy; sister
Carol Geerdes, brother Dan (Deb) Ochs and nieces &amp; nephews. She is now
reunited with those who went before her, especially her beloved parents, Clem
&amp; Emma Helen Ochs, brother Larry Ochs, and brother-in-law Robert Geerdes. She
will be missed beyond measure, and her absence leaves a space in our hearts
that can never be filled. Though she is gone, her spirit lives on in the
countless lives she touched and the memories she created.

A celebration of her life will be held on Monday, July 14,
2025, at 10:30 a.m. at St Frances Cabrini Church, Hoxie, Kansas. Visitation
will take place on Sunday, July 13 from 3:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Mickey-Leopold
Funeral Home, with family present from 5:30 - 7:00 to receive friends. The
vigil and rosary service will follow the visitation at 7:00 p.m.&nbsp; Memorial donations can be made to either
Hoxie Recreation or Selden Recreation.

The Ellis County Fair kicked off with races at the RPM Speedway in Hays.

Ellis County Fair 2025 RPM Speedway races

MANHATTAN — Concerns about a shortage of rural veterinarians have been discussed across agriculture for many years. A recent assessment report produced by the Farm Journal Foundation for the Kansas Department of Agriculture has analyzed data in an effort to identify the root causes of the rural and food systems veterinarian shortage.

The report included findings and assessment related to veterinary licensing and practices, veterinary workforce and education, available federal assistance programs, and Kansas farm and livestock data. Kansas is one of three states which took part in this pilot program to assess veterinary readiness, along with Oklahoma and Indiana. &nbsp;

“The Kansas livestock sector relies upon skilled veterinarians to protect the health of animals on Kansas farms and ranches,” said Secretary of Agriculture Mike Beam. “It is important that we have an informed understanding of the challenges facing us in order to address the veterinarian shortage. We look forward to using this information to take the next steps toward a veterinary workforce that can serve our state.”

“We understand there’s a need for rural veterinary clinics and rural vet support, and we’ve been working for several years to continue to try to define that need and come up with potential solutions,” said Dr. Brad White, director of the Beef Cattle Institute at Kansas State University. &nbsp;“This assessment report is a key part of that process.”

The assessment will contribute to the work of the Kansas Rural Veterinarian Task Force, which has been seeking solutions to this challenge for several years. The task force includes participation from several ag industry and educational organizations which have an interest in addressing the veterinary needs of rural communities.

The task force will use this new information to build on the work that has been done in recent years, including the expansion of the Veterinary Training Program for rural Kansas and the creation of a Food Animal Veterinary Certificate at the K-State College of Veterinary Medicine. This report will help to enhance the task force’s knowledge about the veterinary shortage and will contribute to the development of solutions by identifying gaps and possible assistance opportunities.

KS Department of Agriculture receives veterinary assessment report

HAYS – The Hays Larks scored double-digit runs for a 12th
time this season in a 17-5 run-rule victory over the Colorado Collegiate Roughriders
Friday night at Larks Park.

While the Larks (21-4-1) ran their win streak to six straight,
with a blowout victory Friday night, it wasn’t an easy victory for the home
team. 

Colorado jumped out to a 5-0 lead through an inning and a
half, but the Larks answered in a big way, scoring 17 unanswered runs. 

The Larks used a hit by pitch and back-to-back walks to load
the bases. Kaleb Duncan followed that with a two-run double, cutting the
Colorado lead to 5-2. 

CJ Reid added a two-run triple in the next at-bat,
pulling the Larks within a run at 5-4.

Two batters later, Lane Sparks connected on a two-run home
run to right field, putting the Larks up 6-5.

Later in the inning, Brady Kreutzer singled home the seventh
run of the inning, giving the Larks the 7-5 lead.

The Larks continued to pile on the lead in the bottom of the
third inning, scoring three more times.

Reid homered, Sparks doubled and scored on a wild pitch,
making it 10-5 Larks through three innings.

Following on their second scoreless inning of the game, Hays’
offensive outburst continued in the bottom of the fifth, scoring five times.

Tabor Stokes led off the inning with a solo home run. After
a Sparks triple, Jackson Babcock drove him home with an RBI single for a 12-5
Hays lead.

A sacrifice fly made it 13-5, Hays and then Kreutzer hit a
two-run home run to left, making it 15-5.

In the bottom of the sixth, Hays plated a pair of runs on
RBI groundouts for a 17-5 lead, and they went on to secure that run-rule
victory in the seventh. 

Lane Sparks hit for the cycle. He finished 4-for-5 with a
home run, triple, double and single. He also scored four times and drove in
three runs. 

Brady Kreutzer homered and drove in four runs. Jackson Babcock
was a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs scored.

Trent Baker was awarded with victory for Hays. 

He allowed five runs in four innings with five strikeouts
and one walk.

⚾ Larks homer four times, Sparks hits for cycle in win over Roughriders

A portable generator outside a building in Hays caused structural damage and left one person injured Tuesday.

Hays Deputy Fire Chief Shane Preston said the generator at Wheelchairs of Kansas, 500 Commerce Parkway, sparked a fire around 4:15 p.m., damaging the building’s exterior.

Preston said vapors from the generator ignited, sending one person to the hospital. The incident did not significantly impact the business operations.

Contestants announced for Ellis County Fair Rodeo Pageant

Ellis County is introducing a new mass notification system to improve emergency communication.

The Ellis County Commission discussed the Everbridge system during its Tuesday meeting. It is set to replace the previous CivicPlus system, which had low public engagement due to requiring users to opt in.

Jeffrey Ridgway, county communications director, gave an overview of the system and said that one advantage of Everbridge is its ability to send alerts based on a person's location, rather than relying on users to opt in.

"This system will help bridge a gap that we currently have," Ridgeway said.

Ridgway said alerts remain active until they are manually deactivated and anyone entering the affected area while an alert is active will also receive the notification. He refers back to the 2021 four-county fire that swept through Ellis, Osborne, Rooks and Russell counties.

"The City of Ellis was recommended to evacuate due to that fire threat; the only way we could get that notification out was through media and social media," Ridgway said.

Emergency alerts will be sent automatically by using FEMA’s Integrated Public Alert &amp; Warning System. The system also supports sending a single alert simultaneously to multiple platforms.

However, Ridgway said residents will need to opt in to receive non-emergency messages, such as event notices or public announcements.

The commission supports the Everbridge system, as it can also send notifications to county employees. Ridgway said the system can be customized for use by individual departments, allowing them to send their own notifications among staff or the public when needed.

"We've been trying to go through the onboarding process in the last month and hopefully in the next month or so, we will be completely live on it," Ridgway said.

Larry Joseph Schmidtberger
age 70, of Victoria, Kansas passed away on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, at his home.

He was born February 25,
1955, in Hays, Kansas to Aquilinus “Ike” and Albertina (Sander)
Schmidtberger.&nbsp; He married Rachel M. (Ramsey) on November 22, 2015, in
Victoria, Kansas.

Larry was a line worker for
34 years at EnerSys battery plant in Hays, former (Yuasa-Exide).

He grew up in Victoria, and
was a 1973 graduate of Victoria High School.&nbsp; Larry and Rachel were foster
parents for over 8 years for Saint Francis Ministries of Hays, and were named
Foster Parents of the year for 2025.&nbsp; Larry enjoyed working out, his long
walks, bike riding, and close to his heart were his grandkids and family.

He is survived by his wife,
Rachel Schmidtberger, of the home; his children, Michael Schmidtberger and
wife, Marcey, Walker, KS; Richard Schmidtberger and Skeeter Gleason, both of
the home; his grandchildren, Raymond Schmidtberger, Victoria, KS; Kiley Beagley
and husband, Braden, Russell, KS; Cole Schmidtberger and wife, Jalyn
Dinkel-Schmidtberger, Victoria, KS; his great grandchildren, Kailey and Briggs

friends from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. Friday, at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary,
Victoria, Kansas.

The Heartland Community Foundation is proud to announce the addition of four new members to its Advisory Board, recognize recent leadership transitions, and introduce a new County Engagement Committee structure designed to welcome more diverse voices to the table.

Heartland’s Advisory Board plays a vital role in guiding the Foundation’s mission to improve quality of life across Ellis, Rooks, and Trego counties. Board members serve as local ambassadors, advocates, and decision-makers — ensuring that community needs are understood and represented in every discussion. Each member brings unique insights from their home county, helping Heartland remain grounded in the communities it serves.

The Foundation is excited to welcome four newly appointed board members who bring a broad range of expertise and strong community ties:

· Neva Hendrix, WaKeeney – Neva has served as Human Resources Manager at Trego-Lemke Memorial Hospital for 10 years. She is active in organizations like the Lions Club and P.E.O. and regularly volunteers at events such as the Tree Lighting and Buzzard Bash. She is married to Will Hirsch and has a daughter, Aven.

· Jessica Kerr, Hays – Chief Compliance and Marketing Officer at Golden Belt Bank, Jess has 15 years of banking experience and previously served as a bank examiner for the Kansas Banking Department. She and her husband Greg are raising two children, Eli and Ila.

· Aaron Satran, WaKeeney – Branch President of First Federal Bank, a branch of Lyons Federal Bank, Aaron earned his MBA in Finance in 2023 and is also actively involved in his family’s Trego County cattle operation. He and his wife Emma, both WaKeeney natives, are raising their son Camden and expecting their second child in October.

· Cynthia Steeples, Palco – A lifelong rancher and longtime Heartland supporter, Cynthia and her husband John operate the Quarter Circle S Ranch. She is also involved in numerous&nbsp;organizations, including Prairie Frontier Trails, American Legion Auxiliary, and P.E.O., and enjoys traveling, quilting, kayaking, and hiking.

As part of this transition, the Foundation is also pleased to announce new board officers:

· Cristi Werth, WaKeeney – now serving as Vice President and is slated to become board president in fiscal year 2027.

· Justine Benoit, Damar – now serving as Secretary

These leaders join Josh Dreher, Hays, who continues to serve as Board President for one more year and Jude Fox, Hays, who serves as treasurer.

A Fond Farewell and Deep Appreciation

Heartland also celebrates a bittersweet milestone — saying farewell to four dedicated board members whose terms have come to a close.

· Kelli Hansen of Plainville has served on the board since 2016, including terms as Vice President, President, and Past President. Her leadership helped shape the Foundation’s direction, and her commitment to the grants committee and Rooks County has left a lasting legacy.

· Katie Dorzweiler of Hays joined the board in 2019, serving as Secretary and Co-Chair of the Grants Committee alongside Kelli. Her thoughtful leadership and strong advocacy for Ellis County helped move key initiatives forward.

· Sara Brown and Trey Moeder, both of WaKeeney, joined the board in 2022. Though their terms were shorter, their contributions were meaningful, particularly in representing Trego County voices in Heartland’s work.

We are pleased to share that both Kelli and Katie will remain involved as Board Emeritus Members, continuing to offer guidance and support. They will also continue to serve as co-chairs of the Heartland grant committee.

Introducing County Engagement Committees

In an effort to broaden community participation and invite even more voices to the table, the Foundation is launching Heartland County Engagement Committees this fall in Ellis, Rooks, and Trego counties. These committees will include both board and community members and meet every other month to share insights, surface local opportunities, and expand the Foundation’s connections across the region.

“We know that strong communities are built when people come together,” said Sarah Meitner, executive director. “These new committees will ensure we’re listening to more people, from more places, more often.”

Heartland Community Foundation welcomes new board members, launches Engagement Committees

Tryyaki Asian Cuisine &amp; TeaHouse,&nbsp;located at 2814 Vine St., sustained fire and smoke damage Wednesday morning.

Hays Fire Chief Ryan Hagans said the fire was caused by the spontaneous combustion of cleaning rags in the restaurant’s storage area.

Hagans said that around 6:30 a.m., when the restaurant was closed and empty, a passerby noticed smoke coming from the building. By the time firefighters arrived, the fire had already burned itself out.

Hagans said  there was smoke damage throughout the building. No injuries were reported.

On June 8-12, four members of the Hays First United Methodist Church handbell choir, the Spirit Ringers, attended the Area 11 Handbell Summer Camp near Granby, CO.&nbsp; The camp is held every two years at the scenic Snow Mountain YMCA campgrounds.&nbsp; These beautiful mountains provided an inspirational setting for this experience.

Focus was on handbell techniques, knowledge, and application as the 26 member choir practiced for their Thursday evening concert. Guest clinicians were Sandy Eithun, from Wisconsin, and her son, Mitchell Eithun from North Carolina.&nbsp; Their expertise and activities kept the ringers engaged throughout the rehearsals and workshops each morning and evening.&nbsp;Afternoons provided time for rest, downhill tubing, hiking to a waterfall and a final campfire to wrap up the eventful week.&nbsp;One of the amazing things we learned was that music transcends barriers and unites us. By making music and enjoying fellowship, we developed a special connection with people we had never met before. As we shared, ate, and worked together we learned that through music, we can express our love and joy for each other and for the world. We brought home knowledge, but also enthusiasm to inspire our other choir members. We invested time and hard work and we were rewarded with knowledge, new friends and the joy that comes with sharing music and fellowship with others.
