Keep Kansas Great Bus Tour stopping in Hays



HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State baseball team will wrap up its fall season with the Fall World Series at Larks Park. The Black and Gold teams will compete in a series consisting of seven intrasquad scrimmages&nbsp;beginning Friday, October 2 at 6 p.m. Team rosters and the full series schedule can be found below.

Fans in attendance will be required to adhere to all&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fhsu.edu/covid-19-response/visitors">FHSU&nbsp;health and safety expectations</a>, including but not limited to facial coverings when appropriate, social distancing,&nbsp;hygiene, self-monitoring and symptom checking.

In addition, fans are asked to bring at least one&nbsp;canned food item as price of admission. All items collected will then be donated to a local food bank. Concessions will not be available during any of the Fall World Series contests.

⚾ FHSU baseball readies for Fall World Series

Robert “Bob” James Holt, 59, passed away peacefully in his home on 
March 16, 2020, surrounded by those he loved most dearly. He was born to
 John (Jack) &amp; Charlette Holt on October 6th, 1960, in Kansas City, 
MO and grew up in Great Bend, KS. In 1973 he met the love of his life, 
Tammy (Spray) Holt, who moved in across the street. On January 8th, 
1983, in Great Bend, Bob and Tammy got married after a decade of 
friendship.

Bob was a 1979 graduate of Great Bend High School and earned his B.S.
 in Business Administration from the University of Kansas in 1983, where
 he was a proud member of Delta Upsilon fraternity. After college, Bob 
&amp; Tammy moved to Omaha, NE where he took a job as an estimator for 
AC&amp;S Construction.

In 1985 he was offered a job at Venture Corporation, and the young 
couple were excited to move back to their hometown of Great Bend. During
 his 30 years at Venture he was active on several committees with the 
Kansas Contractors Association. Bob served as Venture Corporation’s 
Secretary &amp; Estimator until his retirement in May of 2015. His 
involvement included; Action Auction (Chairman, 1998-2006), Public 
Relations (1998), Kansas Good Roads (Director), Convention Committee 
(1999-2015), Legislative Committee (2001-2015), Education Foundation 
(2008-2015), Summer Fest (Chairman, 2010-2013) and Flexible Paving 
Division (Chairman, 2012). Outside of his work involvement, he was a 
member of; CKMC Board of Directors, Past President and member of St. 
Patrick’s School Board, Prince of Peace Parish, having served on the 
Property Commission, and Board of Directors of Lakota HOA (Winter Park, 
CO).

His passions in life were his faith, family, friends, golf, KU 
basketball, and Polaris off-roading throughout the Rocky Mountains and 
Moab. Even after being diagnosed with cancer, he refused to lose his 
passion for life. Through his fight, he acted as a living example of how
 important our brief time is on this earth. He continued to establish 
and build relationships, leaving lasting impressions on those whose 
paths’ he crossed.

Bob is survived by his loving wife, Tammy, and their three sons: 
Brett (Leslie) Holt &amp; his granddaughter Landreigh, Brad (Jordan) 
Holt, and Allan Holt. Also, his mother, Charlette Holt and 4 siblings: 
John (Suzy) Holt, Beth (Paul) Jantsch, Tom (Mindy) Holt, and Mary (Vic) 
Adamle. As well has his mother-in-law, Doris Spray, and two 
brothers-in-law, Kip (Kelly) Spray and Chris (Julie) Spray. Bob was also
 an amazing uncle to his 16 nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death 
by his father, John (Jack) Holt, his father-in-law, Orville (Butch) 
Spray.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2020, at 
St. Patrick Catholic Church, Great Bend, with Father Don Bedore 
presiding.&nbsp; Inurnment will follow at Great Bend Cemetery North.&nbsp; A 
Rosary will be held 6:00 p.m. Monday, Oct. 5, 2020, at Bryant Funeral 
Home. Memorials are suggested to the Cancer Fund at Golden Belt 
Community Foundation, Prince of Peace Parish, and Golden Belt Home 
Health &amp; Hospice, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Robert 'Bob' James Holt

Lidwina "Lydia" Denning was the daughter of Frank and Catherine (Wasinger) Richmeier. She was born April 26, 1921, in St. Peter, Kansas, and passed away peacefully at the Andbe Home in Norton, Kansas, on September 29, 2020, at the age of 99.

Lydia attended the St. Peter Grade School.  On June 17, 1941, she married George Denning in St. Peter.  They made their home in Wakeeney and Logan, Kansas, before moving to Norton in 1968.  Lydia was a homemaker where she and George enjoyed raising their family of four children.  Lydia was also proud of her accomplishment in obtaining her GED.  Her loving husband, George, passed away July 20, 2007.  Lydia continued to live in their home before moving to the Bieber apartments and later moved into the Andbe Home.

Lydia was a member of the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Norton, where she served as a Eucharistic minister and in the ladies auxiliary.  She also was a gifted quilter.

Survivors include:  four children, JoAnn Durbin, Hazel Park, Michigan; Francis (Sherry) Denning, Salina, Kansas; Steve Denning, Red Hill, New Mexico; and Cindy (Steve) Shinners, Highlands Ranch, Colorado; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Joe Richmeier, Denver, Colorado; Gerald Richmeier, Grand Junction, Colorado; Ronald Richmeier, Aurora, Colorado; two sisters, Armella Ashworth, Kansas City, Kansas; and Frances Nimz, Wakeeney, Kansas; other relatives and friends.

Lydia was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one brother, Ben Richmeier and four sisters, Julia Scheck, Helen Knoll, Barbara Malsom and Mary Spies.

Phillipsburg resident Dale L. Henry passed away Monday, September 
28, 2020, at the Phillips County Hospital, Phillipsburg, at the age of 
82.

Dale was born February 4, 1938, in Greensburg, Indiana the son of Walter J. and Eva (Shoopman) Henry.&nbsp; He was an US Army veteran.

Survivors include his four girls, Peggy Littrell and husband Gary, 
Vicky Lind and husband Steve, Jeannette Patterson all of Phillipsburg 
and Nancy Muck and husband Terry of Gaylord; 8 grandchildren; 17 great 
grandchildren; and two brothers, Jessie Henry and wife Kay of 
Zephyrhills, Fl and Alvin Henry and wife Virginia of Sealy, Tx.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, October 2, 2020 in
 the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg.&nbsp; Services will be

Dale L. Henry

Lavonne Arlyss Baker, daughter of John and Anna (Miller) Ehm was born February 15, 1930, on a farm north of Gretna in Phillips County, Kansas.&nbsp; She went to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, September 29, 2020, at the age of 90.

She married Wayne Baker, June 6, 1948, at Calvary Baptist Church in Phillipsburg, Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne in 2011, and a son, Rodney in 2001.

She is survived by her children Roger Baker, Terri Baker, and Deb Robinson all of Phillipsburg, and Sherri Baker of Agra; three grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; her sister Melba Bentz of Foley, AL; brother Arlen Ehm of Phillipsburg.

At Lavonne's request, there will a private family graveside service at the Pleasant View Cemetery near Gretna, KS in Phillips County, KS.

Mrs. Baker will lie in state from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday, October 1st, 2020 at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg

Lavonne Arlyss Baker

Doris Josephine Winslow, age 73, of Hays, Kansas, passed away Saturday, September 26, 2020, at Hays Medical Center. She was born Nov. 3, 1946, in Antonino, Kansas, to Reinhold and Josephine (Kuhn) Herrman. She married David Winslow on September 26, 1998. He preceded her in death on March 21, 2009.

Love. If one had to boil Doris’s life down to one word, it’s love.&nbsp; She loved her boys.&nbsp; So much.&nbsp; She loved to see them succeed.&nbsp; She loved to see them try and struggle and eventually conquer new things.&nbsp; She loved to see her boys love and support each other.&nbsp; She loved her parents and siblings and nieces and nephews.&nbsp; When she was younger, she loved going to work every day.&nbsp; She was the type to teach by example, and no matter the lesson or task or thing, love was always the underlying element.

Doris had epic battles with mental illness for much of her life.&nbsp; Through courage and her love of her family, her sons, their wives, and her grandchildren, she found the strength to endure and overcome those hurdles.

Doris loved three husbands in her life.&nbsp; Jim and she had three sons: Dan, Rick, and Scott.&nbsp; Marrying Tom gave Doris the opportunity to share her love with stepsons Brad and Curt.&nbsp; Then marrying David gave one more stepson Chris.&nbsp; Doris loved all of her sons and stepsons equally and completely.&nbsp; She always strived to teach them life lessons and most of all, to forgive and to love. &nbsp;

Watching her boys play sports in school brought great joy to Doris, and that joy stayed throughout her life watching the boys cheer on their favorite sports teams.&nbsp; The Royals were on TV at Doris’ house a great many nights!

Doris’s favorite activity was to have friends and family over for dinner.&nbsp; She was an excellent cook and hosted countless parties filled with family, laughter, and double-deck-pinochle in the house at 1300 Eisenhower.&nbsp; The house was big enough for family to stay overnight in the spare bedroom, kids to play endless games of ping-pong downstairs, and just enough space outside to cook on the grill.&nbsp; Those were the best of times for Doris.&nbsp; She adored taking the boys camping at Wilson Lake.&nbsp; Doris greatly enjoyed listening to David play his guitar and recite the poetry he wrote.&nbsp; Doris could not get enough time on the phone with her boys, and it was impossible for her to ever say no to her grandchildren.

There is a rumor that no one has ever witnessed her boys arguing or fighting.&nbsp; Ever.&nbsp; And that’s a testament to the abundance of love Doris taught and felt for those close to her.&nbsp; Her love will endure, but she will be missed.

She is survived by three sons, Dan Kohl and wife Tina of Schoenchen, Kansas, Rick Kohl and wife Kelly of Moundridge, Kansas and Scott Kohl of St. George, Kansas; two brothers, Les Herrman of Hays and Leon Herrman of Colorado Springs; two sisters, Carol Danielson of Great Bend and Linda Mayberry of Great Bend. She also is survived by four grandchildren, Russ, Faith, Trevor and Collin Kohl.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Elmer, Cyril, Frank, Roy, Donny and J.R. Herrman and a sister, Edna Rohr.

Funeral services will be 10 AM Thursday, October 1, 2020, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Hays. Burial will follow in Our Lady Help of Christians Cemetery in Antonino, Kansas.

Visitation will be Wednesday 6 PM - 8 PM with a combined rosary and vigil at 7 PM all at Brock's-Keithley Funeral Chapel and Crematory 2509 Vine Hays, KS 67601. Thursday visitation will be 9 AM - 9:30 AM at the funeral chapel.

She was born Nov. 3, 1946, in Antonino, Kansas, to Reinhold and Josephine (Kuhn) Herrman. She married David Winslow on September 26, 1998. He preceded her in death on March 21, 2009.Love. If one had to boil Doris’s life down to one word, it’s love.&nbsp; She loved her boys.&nbsp; So much.&nbsp; She loved to see them succeed.&nbsp; She loved to see them try and struggle and eventually conquer new things.&nbsp; She loved to see her boys love and support each other.&nbsp; She loved her parents and siblings and nieces and nephews.&nbsp; When she was younger, she loved going to work every day.&nbsp; She was the type to teach by example, and no matter the lesson or task or thing, love was always the underlying element.Doris had epic battles with mental illness for much of her life.&nbsp; Through courage and her love of her family, her sons, their wives, and her grandchildren, she found the strength to endure and overcome those hurdles.Doris loved three husbands in her life.&nbsp; Jim and she had three sons: Dan, Rick, and Scott.&nbsp; Marrying Tom gave Doris the opportunity to share her love with stepsons Brad and Curt.&nbsp; Then marrying David gave one more stepson Chris.&nbsp; Doris loved all of her sons and stepsons equally and completely.&nbsp; She always strived to teach them life lessons and most of all, to forgive and to love. &nbsp;Watching her boys play sports in school brought great joy to Doris, and that joy stayed throughout her life watching the boys cheer on their favorite sports teams.&nbsp; The Royals were on TV at Doris’ house a great many nights!Doris’s favorite activity was to have friends and family over for dinner.&nbsp; She was an excellent cook and hosted countless parties filled with family, laughter, and double-deck-pinochle in the house at 1300 Eisenhower.&nbsp; The house was big enough for family to stay overnight in the spare bedroom, kids to play endless games of ping-pong downstairs, and just enough space outside to cook on the grill.&nbsp; Those were the best of times for Doris.&nbsp; She adored taking the boys camping at Wilson Lake.&nbsp; Doris greatly enjoyed listening to David play his guitar and recite the poetry he wrote.&nbsp; Doris could not get enough time on the phone with her boys, and it was impossible for her to ever say no to her grandchildren.There is a rumor that no one has ever witnessed her boys arguing or fighting.&nbsp; Ever.&nbsp; And that’s a testament to the abundance of love Doris taught and felt for those close to her.&nbsp; Her love will endure, but she will be missed.She is survived by three sons, Dan Kohl and wife Tina of Schoenchen, Kansas, Rick Kohl and wife Kelly of Moundridge, Kansas and Scott Kohl of St. George, Kansas; two brothers, Les Herrman of Hays and Leon Herrman of Colorado Springs; two sisters, Carol Danielson of Great Bend and Linda Mayberry of Great Bend. Phyllis Ann Rueschhoff, 79, Hays, died Tuesday, September 29, 2020 at HaysMed.

She was born January 16, 1941 on the 
family farm northeast of Grinnell, the oldest of seven children of 
Stephen and Betty (Halbleib) Broeckelman.&nbsp; In 1959 she graduated from 
Grinnell High School, and then attended one year of college at Marymount
 College in Salina.&nbsp; On July 9, 1960, Phyllis was united in marriage to 
Day Rueschhoff and to their union they had five children; Stephanie, 
Melanie, Deb, Darren, and Dayna.&nbsp; They were married 35 years before he 
preceded her in death on May 18, 1996.&nbsp; &nbsp;Phyllis was a full-time 
homemaker who enjoyed gardening and canning.&nbsp; Later, she taught piano 
lessons as well as worked as a florist and seamstress.&nbsp; While living in 
Angelus she was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, St. Paul Altar 
Society, Daughters of Isabella.&nbsp; After moving to Hays in 2001, she 
became a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.

Survivors include her son; Darren 
Rueschhoff (Angel) of Hays, her four daughters; Stephanie Matteson 
(Brad) of Inkster, ND, Melanie Moeder of Hays, Deb Bickford of Olathe, 
and Dayna Krannawitter (Brian) of Lincoln, NE, 12 grandchildren; Ashley 
Renfrow (Dakota), Andy Moeder (Whitney), Trey Moeder (Alyssa), Skylin 
Day (Dustin), Keyston Moeder, Lauren Bickford (fiancé Frank Fuentes), 
Connor Bickford, Tyler Rueschhoff, Jace Rueschhoff, Abby Rueschhoff, 
Taryn Rueschhoff, and Cole Krannawitter, nine great grandchildren; 
Dayson, Ryalin, Mayci, Brooke, Lydia, Gage, Kinslee, Kori, and Karsyn, a
 brother; Lee Broeckelman (Barb) of Grinnell, three sisters; Joan 
Ostmeyer (Rick) of Hays, Lois Stafford (Don) of Hays, and Barb Dayvault 
of Sacramento, CA, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her

Vernon L. Windholz, age 85, of Ellis, Kansas, passed away Sunday, September 27, 2020, at the Good Samaritan Society, Ellis. He was born October 20, 1934, in Ellis to Rudolph and Catherine (Beer) Windholz. He was a graduate of Ellis High School. He married Bernice Poto, who preceded him in death.

Vernon was a cook most of his working life primarily at the Golden Ox for over twenty years. He was a US Army Veteran serving in Korea. Vernon was a member of St. Mary's Church and the Ellis VFW.

He is survived by a brother, Kenneth Windholz of Ellis; three sisters,Kathy Wolf of Ellis, Roseann Billinger of Hays and Goldie Dinkel of Ellis as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Rinda Linn Windholz.

Funeral Mass will be 2:30 PM Wednesday, September 30, 2020, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Ellis. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors courtesy of the Ellis VFW Honor Guard.

volleyball faced two ranked opponents at the Smith Center quadrangular Tuesday. The Monarchs split with the ranked teams then blew out Russell to go 2-1 on the night.

The Monarchs (19-5), who are ranked seventh in the latest KVA poll, defeated Smith Center, who is ranked fourth in 2A, 25-20, 15-25, 25-19. 

They lost to Phillipsburg, who’s ranked eighth in 3A, 18-25, 25-23 and 23-25.

Wasinger, Phelps will appear on Smoky Hills PBS candidate forum

If I were putting together a Sunday Drive Edition of a scavenger hunt, it would most certainly include the “CO-OP” emblem. You probably know what one I mean: an outline of a red circle and blue circle overlapping and the letters C-O-O-P stamped in the middle.

No matter where you go in the Midwest, you can likely spot this classic symbol. It’s in obvious places like on the side of a grain elevator, gas tank or a business sign. And in more subtle places like old feed buckets, oil drums, clocks and utensils in a grandmother’s kitchen, or on hats and jackets kept by old farmers.

The logo, which was almost universally used by agricultural cooperatives in the 1980s and earlier, has slowly faded from use as modern cooperatives have opted to use their own brands to build recognition and loyalty, which is a smart move from a business perspective.

The nostalgic side of me is a little sad to see the once unified look of cooperatives drift into obsolescence. It makes me think about all the people who are rapidly moving further away from the complex story of how American agriculture came to grow of the safest, most abundant food supply in the world.

Cooperatives played a vital role in that story, and since October is National Co-ops month, I want to share briefly about how co-ops helped build American agriculture into what it is today and how they continue to keep our rural communities strong.

Cooperatives have their roots in agriculture. A group of farmers in England who were getting a raw deal from their suppliers formed the first cooperative several centuries ago. They were paying too much for a terrible product. Eventually the farmers got so frustrated that they decided they could do much better themselves. They pooled their resources to create a business but ended up creating an new framework and guiding principles for cooperatives, which are business collectively owned and operated by their members, who then share in the benefits and profits of the organization.

A century ago, that same model started to make a lot of sense in small remote communities across the Midwest. As farmers began to grow excess grain, they needed somewhere to take it. A group of neighbors could form a cooperative, which allowed them to team up and build an elevator for storage and have an organization that could take care of selling and shipping grain to larger markets. Cooperatives helped farmers make a better living for themselves and their neighbors.

Through the decades, these small community cooperatives have grown and merged with other cooperatives to create more efficiency and adapted to provide new services for their members. However, the guiding principles of serving members and their communities have stayed the same.

The people who started those cooperatives probably were not that different from you and me. They were trying to build a business, make a living and support their families. What made them special was the willingness to do something risky. They joined their neighbors, taking a chance together in hopes it would fix their problems.

In the spirit of cooperatives and the pioneers who built them, I challenge you to look around at your community. What problems need solving? No one is going to solve them for you. You do not necessarily have to start a cooperative to fix every problem but working together with your neighbors and investing in your community are great places to start.

And if you do have a local co-op, remember support them is just like supporting your neighbors and community.

 </figure>By JACKIE MUNDT Pratt County farmer and rancherIf I were putting together a Sunday Drive Edition of a scavenger hunt, it would most certainly include the “CO-OP” emblem. You probably know what one I mean: an outline of a red circle and blue circle overlapping and the letters C-O-O-P stamped in the middle.No matter where you go in the Midwest, you can likely spot this classic symbol. It’s in obvious places like on the side of a grain elevator, gas tank or a business sign. And in more subtle places like old feed buckets, oil drums, clocks and utensils in a grandmother’s kitchen, or on hats and jackets kept by old farmers.The logo, which was almost universally used by agricultural cooperatives in the 1980s and earlier, has slowly faded from use as modern cooperatives have opted to use their own brands to build recognition and loyalty, which is a smart move from a business perspective.The nostalgic side of me is a little sad to see the once unified look of cooperatives drift into obsolescence. It makes me think about all the people who are rapidly moving further away from the complex story of how American agriculture came to grow of the safest, most abundant food supply in the world.Cooperatives played a vital role in that story, and since October is National Co-ops month, I want to share briefly about how co-ops helped build American agriculture into what it is today and how they continue to keep our rural communities strong.Cooperatives have their roots in agriculture. A group of farmers in England who were getting a raw deal from their suppliers formed the first cooperative several centuries ago. They were paying too much for a terrible product. Eventually the farmers got so frustrated that they decided they could do much better themselves. They pooled their resources to create a business but ended up creating an new framework and guiding principles for cooperatives, which are business collectively owned and operated by their members, who then share in the benefits and profits of the organization.A century ago, that same model started to make a lot of sense in small remote communities across the Midwest. As farmers began to grow excess grain, they needed somewhere to take it. A group of neighbors could form a cooperative, which allowed them to team up and build an elevator for storage and have an organization that could take care of selling and shipping grain to larger markets. Cooperatives helped farmers make a better living for themselves and their neighbors.Through the decades, these small community cooperatives have grown and merged with other cooperatives to create more efficiency and adapted to provide new services for their members. However, the guiding principles of serving members and their communities have stayed the same.The people who started those cooperatives probably were not that different from you and me. They were trying to build a business, make a living and support their families. What made them special was the willingness to do something risky. They joined their neighbors, taking a chance together in hopes it would fix their problems.In the spirit of cooperatives and the pioneers who built them, I challenge you to look around at your community. What problems need solving? No one is going to solve them for you. You do not necessarily have to start a cooperative to fix every problem but working together with your neighbors and investing in your community are great places to start.And if you do have a local co-op, remember support them is just like supporting your neighbors and community."Insight" is a weekly column published by Kansas Farm Bureau, the state's largest farm organization whose mission is to strengthen agriculture and the lives of Kansans through advocacy, education and service.

Kansas Farm Bureau Insight: The benefits of cooperation

Cooler nights are increasing in frequency now that we are into October. If you have tomatoes, you may have some that are approaching maturity. Leave them on the vine until mature or until a frost is forecast. 

Tomatoes will ripen off the vine but must have reached a certain phase of maturity called the "mature green stage." Look for full-sized tomatoes with a white, star-shaped zone on the bottom end of the green fruit.&nbsp;​

When harvesting fruit before a frost, separate tomatoes into three groups for storage: those that are mostly red, those that are just starting to turn, and those that are still green. Discard tomatoes with defects such as rots or breaks in the skin. Place the tomatoes on cardboard trays or cartons but use layers of newspaper to separate fruit if stacked. Occasionally a tomato may start to rot and leak juice. The newspaper will keep the juice from contacting nearby or underlying fruit. Store groups of tomatoes at as close to 55 degrees as possible until needed.&nbsp;&nbsp;

FICK: Last tomatoes of the season 

Lois Elaine Meitl was born October 6, 1928, in Selden, KS to Florentz and
 Margaret (Reinert) Neff. She passed away September 25, 2020, at the Good
 Samaritan Society of Decatur County at the age of 91.


Lois grew up in Selden and graduated from Selden High School. She 
then went on to attend Marymount in Salina where she graduated with a 
Bachelor’s of Science degree. On June 6, 1951, Lois was united in 
marriage to Gerald F. Meitl. Together they raised nine children in their
 home three miles northeast of Leoville. Lois was a homemaker and High 
School Teacher in Leoville, Rexford and Selden. She was a member of the 
Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Leoville.  She was also a 
member and served on the Board of the Salina Diocese Council of Catholic
 Women in the mid 1980’s. 


Lois was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gerald in 2006; son, Gregory in 1960.


She is survived by her three sons, Steven and Marlene Meitl of 
McCook, NE, Tim Meitl of Indianapolis, IN, and Brice Meitl and Darci 
Meitl of Oberlin, KS; five daughters, Joan Meitl and Jeff Franklin, 
Boise, ID, Ann Johnson, Overland Park KS, Nancy and Brad Bassett of 
Salina, KS, Gail and Todd Shields of Bolivar, MO, and Cindy and Ed 
Starke of Helena, MT; 13 grandchildren: Kyle Johnson and wife Sarah, 
Natalie Johnson, Marie and husband Larry Holloman, Clint and wife Gina 
Rocha, Hannah and Dylan Bassett, Courtney and Amanda Shields, Anthony, 
Jenna, and James Starke, Laysha and husband Tyler O’Shields, and Faith 
Meitl; and eight great grandchildren. 


Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am Thursday, October 
1, 2020 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Leoville. Burial 
will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Leoville. Visitation will be 1-7:00

Lois Elaine Meitl

Keith Alden Van Pelt was born July 1, 1947 in Delta, CO to LeRoy "Jack" 
Van Pelt and Katie Maude (Smith) Van Pelt. He passed away Saturday, Sept
 26, 2020 at the Great Plains Hospital in North Platte, NE at the age of
 73.


Keith was raised in Dresden, KS where he attended grade school and 
graduated from Jennings High School in Jennings, KS in 1965. Keith was 
drafted into the Army in July of 1966 and proudly served his country 
until his honorable discharge in June of 1968. 


Keith married Elaine Wagoner on November 5, 1966 and to this union they had 3 children, Curt, Leah, and Jason.


Keith married his 2nd wife Maritta Louise (Foight) on April 7, 1973.
 Over the years, the family made their home in McCook and Indianola, NE 
and Oberlin, KS. Keith worked for Murfin Drilling Company for over 40 
years before he retired in January 2015. He was a devoted husband, 
father, grandfather, and great-grandfather and enjoyed attending his 
children's and grandchildren's activities along with his nieces and 
nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews activities. 


He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Curt and Shannon 
Van Pelt of Winfield, KS and Jason and Lorna Van Pelt of Clayton, NC; 
one daughter and son-in-law, Leah and Steve Sewell of Dresden, KS; one 
sister-in-law, Jannelle Van Pelt of Indianola, NE, and two 
brothers-in-law, Glendon Foight of Grand Island, NE and Ron Foight of 
Beaver City, NE. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren: Dan Sewell, 
Thomas Sewell, Alexis Ruetti, Kayla DelaVega, Kyle Van Pelt, Kaden Van 
Pelt, Gina Westerman, Spencer Van Pelt and Ariana Van Pelt; 8 
great-grandchildren: Vichtor DeleVega, Trinity Sewell, Wally Sewell, RJ 
Ruetti, Lyndee Ruetti, Jay Van Pelt, Dexter and Zephren Westerman; in 
addition to nephews and nieces and other family members and friends.


Keith was preceded in death by his 2nd wife, Maritta (Foight) Van 
Pelt; parents LeRoy and Katie; one infant brother and one infant sister;
 brothers Roy Van Pelt and Charlie Van Pelt, and one sister-in-law Dona 
Van Pelt.


Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am Saturday, October 3, 2020 
at Pauls Funeral Home, Oberlin. Burial with military honors will follow 
at Oberlin Cemetery. Visitation will be 1-7:00 pm Friday, October 2,

Keith Alden Van Pelt

John Harris, 84, went to be with Jesus on September 28, 2020, at his 
home in Great Bend surrounded by his whole family. He was the son of 
Merle and Emma Harris, born on January 31, 1936 in Pretty Prairie.&nbsp; He 
was one of six children.

John grew up enjoying the outdoors; fishing, hunting, farming and later, boating and more fishing.

John graduated from Mt. Hope High School in 1955. He started dating 
Carole Schoonover from Haven High School, starting his junior year in 
high school.&nbsp; While John was in high school, he met his Lord and was 
baptized at Mount Hope Methodist Church. Later, on August 15, 1957, he 
married that high school sweetheart and they went to Hutchinson 
Community College, where John played football and was co-captain of the 
football team in 1957. From there they went onto Emporia State 
University, where he received his BSE in 1959.

John’s first job was teaching in Carbondale, where he coached all 
three sports, taught history, shop and drivers education. In those days,
 “the coach” marked the football field and drove the players’ bus.

Their summers were spent at Arkansas State University where they 
received their MSE degree the following two summers. It helped that ASU 
was so close to calm and beautiful, Lake Norfork.

After two years in Carbondale, they moved to Partridge where John 
coached and taught from 1962-1964 (football &amp; track). While in 
Partridge, John and Carole started their family. Pam was born in 1964. 
Then, as they moved to Goddard the rest of the family came along; Kim, 
1967, Jenni, 1969 and Tammi in 1973. They made their home in Goddard for
 the next 12 years while John was coaching football and track and 
teaching Drivers Education and History.

While in Goddard, he continued at Wichita State University to finish 
his Specialist in Education Administration. The next move was to 
Athletic Director in Goddard.

Then in 1976, they moved to Great Bend, where John was the new 
Assistant Superintendent in charge of finance, and buildings and 
grounds. What a wonderful career followed at school, with further 
education, and teaching finance classes at FHSU and for KSU. The many 
years until his retirement went quickly and in 2004 he retired from USD 
428.

When the first child was born, they decided to make family vacation a
 priority. Each year, they would ask the girls where they wanted to go 
and it was always Table Rock Lake and Branson. They had many good times 
and good years together, as this family vacation continues as a 
tradition. John had many plans for fishing trips after retirement. He 
and Carole went to Alaska twice and British Columbia and Hawaii before 
his health became an issue.

Survivors include his loving and devoted wife, Carole, of the home, 
four daughters, Pam Allender (Kendall) of Hutchinson, Kim Randall (Mark)
 of Great Bend, Jenni Wittig (Steve) of Great Bend and Tammi 
Krebaum&nbsp;(Kevin) of Salina; one brother, Joe Harris (Harriet); one 
sister, Amelia Lyon; two brother-in-laws, Jack Cole and Don Newton; 12 
grandchildren, Erika Ewing (Harley) and their children Harley and 
Theodore, Erin Bernard (Jon), Zane Allender, Jackson Randall, Jensen 
Randall, Jaiden Randall (earning her angel wings in 2001), Johnathan 
Randall, Dustin Swanson (Melissa) and their children Rydlie, Lennex and 
Coda, Chantell Wittig (Jordan McKenzie), Kade Krebaum, Megan Krebaum and
 Julianna Krebaum.

He was preceded in passing by three sisters, Audrey Stamback, Julia 
Cole, and Ellenna Newton; and by two brother-in-laws, James Stamback and
 Gary Lyon.

His family, these wonderful kids, grandkids and great grandkids were 
the love of his life. He didn’t ever want to miss being in on whatever 
sport or activity they were doing. The last two years, his health 
dictated that he couldn’t go, but he still kept up on what was 
happening.

John was a generous, patient, loving, kind and caring husband, dad, 
grandpa, great grandpa and friend to so many wonderful people. John 
loved to tell stories that entertained his family and friends. Whether 
the stories be about the civil war, the wild, wild west or the latest 
fishing stories or football games, he entertained us all with his 
knowledge and wit. He was an avid reader of history and Civil War 
stories. John had many wonderful Doctors who helped along the way; Dr. 
Amanda Valiant, Dr. David Gile, Dr. Richard Preston, Dr. Greg Nanney, 
Dr. Jon Pike, and Dr. Ryan Beard to name the most recent.

John was involved in the Heartland Community Church of Great Bend, 
past president of Great Bend Noon Lions Club, past president of KASBO 
(Kansas Association School Business Officials), and past president of 
USA (United School Administrators). He was inducted into Kansas Teachers
 Hall of Fame in Dodge City in 2003.

Visitaiton will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Thursday, 
October 1, 2020, at Bryant Funeral Home, with family to receive friends 
from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. John’s Celebration of Life will be held at 10:00 
a.m., Friday, October 2, 2020, at Heartland Community Church with 
Pastors Troy Miller and Greg Savage presiding. Interment will be in the 
Great Bend Cemetery North. 

Memorials are suggested to the Heartland 
Community Church or Barton County Food Bank, in care of Bryant Funeral 
Home.

 Hall of Fame in Dodge City in 2003.Visitaiton will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Thursday, 
October 1, 2020, at Bryant Funeral Home, with family to receive friends 
from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. John’s Celebration of Life will be held at 10:00 
a.m., Friday, October 2, 2020, at Heartland Community Church with 
Pastors Troy Miller and Greg Savage presiding. Interment will be in the 
Great Bend Cemetery North. Memorials are suggested to the Heartland 
Community Church or Barton County Food Bank, in care of Bryant Funeral 
Home.

John Harris

Robyn Clifford passed away on Sunday, September 27, 2020 at the Redbud 
Village nursing home in Plainville, Kansas, at the age of 76. She was 
born on October 4, 1943 to Robert and Vivian (Freeman) Keiser in 
Glendale, California.


Robyn spent her early years moving around the world due to her 
father’s affiliation with the United States Military. She battled many 
illnesses at a young age but never let that affect her work or the care 
she gave to others. Robyn found a home in Henderson, Nevada where she 
spent a few years working in a nursing home and met and fell in love 
with a co-worker, Donald Clifford. The couple were united in marriage on
 February 14, 1992 in Henderson at the nursing home they worked so the 
residents could attend. They later relocated to the Rooks County area 
where she and Donald spent the rest of their lives.


Robyn was a woman of faith with a huge heart that overflowed with 
love for family, friends, the elderly she cared for, and even the stray 
cats she took into her care. A beacon of light, her charismatic and 
bubbly personality radiated from her heart to everyone she met. She 
never knew a stranger and jumped at the opportunities to help anyone. 
She donated vehicle loads of clothing to the Pine Ridge Reservation; and
 it was by this daily example of living that she taught all of us what 
it truly means to love and care for one another, and live every day 
being grateful for the opportunity to humbly serve one another. 


Robyn is survived by her daughter, Leeann of Florida; stepdaughter, 
Naomi Clifford of Oklahoma; step-sons, Jamie Thompson of Nevada and Andy
 Clifford of Arizona; close friend, Kayla Desbien of Kansas; one 
grandchild; and  several step-grandchildren and 
step-great-grandchildren.


She is preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Vivian Keiser; husband, Donald Clifford; and sister Roberta Keiser.


Memorials are suggested to Alzheimer’s Association and may be sent 
in care of Plumer-Overlease Funeral Home, 723 North First, Stockton, 
Kansas, 67669.

Linda Lulubell Fry passed away on September 25, 2020 at the Solomon 
Valley Manor in Stockton, KS, at the age of 73. She was born on July 10,
 1947 in rural Natoma, KS to Erle and Leona Martha (Chrisler) Beck. She 
was married to Harvey Fry on November 26, 1968 in Washington. 


Linda grew up in Natoma and graduated from Natoma High School in 
1965. After high school she moved to Portland, Oregon to work as a 
nannie while Harvey was in Vietnam. After Harvey’s 28 years of service 
in the Airforce, they moved back to Woodston. 


Linda loved to travel, and she loved cats, horses, and rodeos. 
Although she has now gone home to be with her Lord, the legacy of her 
caring and compassion will live on in our hearts and memories. 


Linda is survived by her sisters, Carol Kimball of Urich, MO and 
Lela Glatz and husband Gary of Brighton, WI; brother, Allen Beck and 
wife Mary of Hutchinson, KS; sister-in-law Dena Beck of Stockton, KS; 
and many nieces and nephews.


She is preceded in death by her parents, Erle and Leona; husband Harvey Fry; and brother Alvy Beck.


A funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 3, 2020, at 2:00
 PM with visitation 11:00 AM until service time at the funeral home in 
Stockton. Private inurnment will be at the Ash Rock Cemetery, north 
Woodston.

Linda L. Fry

Cyril J. Schmeidler, age 100, died at Via Christi, Hays, KS, on Saturday, September 26, 2020. Cyril John Schmeidler was born at Catharine, KS, on October 7, 1919, the eldest son of John Schmeidler and Emma (Wolf) Schmeidler. He served his country for 3 ½ years during World War II and was a lifelong farmer in the Catharine area.

Cyril graduated from Hays High School in 1937 and St. Joseph’s College and Military Academy in 1939. He moved to Washington, DC shortly thereafter and married his childhood sweetheart, Mildred Karlin, on June 7, 1943 in Jacksonville, FL prior to departing for Europe for the war. He was a clerk typist in the Seventh Corps, U.S. Army, and was discharged in late 1945, having attained the rank of corporal.

After the war, he returned to Ellis County to take up farming. He and Mildred rejoiced in the births of their four sons, weathered the droughts of 1950s, and rebuilt their new home and the farmstead after they were destroyed by a tornado in 1959. He was active on the farm north of Catharine well into his mid-nineties, and said that he was happiest when he was on the tractor. Cyril also was active in St. Catherine’s Catholic Church and in the Ellis County community throughout his life. He briefly taught at Severin School in the late 1940s. He served several terms on the St. Catherine’s Parish Council. He was a Catharine Township trustee for many years, a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW)-Hays and a member of the Hays American Legion. He was a charter member of the Farmers Credit Union, Hays, served on the board &amp; was board president. He served as president of the Ellis County Extension Council. He received conservation awards from the Ellis County Soil Conservation District. In the mid-1970s, he was a co-owner and the general manager of the Victoria Grain Company. He sold insurance and was an accomplished carpenter.

Although it may be said that Cyril’s favorite pastime was working (except Sundays), he also loved to play cards, especially pinochle and solo. He always seemed to know what cards others had in their hands or what card they were about to play. He loved to dance, and learned to square dance with his second wife.

Cyril Schmeidler was preceded in death by his first wife, Mildred, who died in 1972; his second wife, Alice Unrein, whom he married on August 23, 1975 and who died in April 2019; his siblings and their spouses: Solana Moore (Paul); Fidelia Herbert (Charles), Sr. Solana Schmeidler, Celestine Schmeidler (Marcella), Harold Schmeidler (Norma), and Gilbert Schmeidler (Mary Ann), and two great-grandchildren.

He is survived by four sons: Neal (Lorrinda), Springfield, VA; Phil (Brenda), Hays, KS; Michael (Cheryl) Hays, KS; Lloyd (Brenda), Durham, NC; twelve grandchildren, thirty great-grandchildren, &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;one great-great-grandson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Cyril John Schmeidler will be held on Wednesday, September 30th at 11 AM at St. Catherine’s Church in Catharine. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 AM at the church, with a Parish Rosary at 10:30.&nbsp; Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors courtesy of the Hays VFW Honor Guard.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all visitors are expected to wear facial coverings throughout the services.

Memorial gifts may be made to St. Catherine’s Church, Thomas More Prep-Marian, Via Christi Chapel, or the Dominican Sisters of Peace. The family is grateful for the loving care provided by the team at Via Christi to Cyril and Alice Schmeidler during their stay there.
