Osborne company running for Top Coolest Thing Made in Kansas

Fall is in the air and that is exciting. For many families it means the start of a new school year with a schedule of extra-curricular activities that could make your head spin. For others it is a time of slowing down, and preparing your home and garden for cooler weather. For the Cottonwood Extension District, fall is a time when educational programs abound.&nbsp;

Are you a life-long learner? Moms and dads, grandmas and grandpas are never too old to learn something new. I don’t mean you have to enroll in a formal class, complete with a syllabus and a final exam. I am talking about the many educational programs offered by the Cottonwood Extension District. Whether you are a farmer interested in controlling honey locust trees in your pastures, or you have youngsters who are ready to join the 4-H and youth program, Extension has something for everyone. One program I am excited to share in the month ahead is about fermented foods. (Next weeks’ column will provide all of the details) &nbsp;

The year 2020 has created challenges for many. In Extension, our Administrative team has encouraged us to turn these challenges into opportunities. When our face-to-face meetings were restricted for a few months, our use of technology kicked into high gear. While Zoom meetings and webinars became the norm, our Cottonwood Extension Educators found ways to stay connected.

And just a reminder that our offices in both Great Bend and Hays are open and ready to serve you. We do ask that you wear a mask when entering our offices. If your questions can be answered through an e-mail or phone call we encourage that.

I would also like to encourage you to check out our Cottonwood website and like our Facebook page. Then you will see first hand the many learning opportunities that are highlighted. We are currently working on our fall quarterly on-line newsletter which will be posted to the web site in early October. I hope you will make time in your schedule to learn something new!&nbsp;

Hays Catholic Schools, TMP-Marian and Holy Family Elementary will be in Onsite Learning for the week of 9/28 - 10/2.

HFE has two confirmed cases of COVID-19, 8 students quarantined and 4 students absent due to COVID-19 like symptoms.  Holy Family has made the decision that 6B will go to remote learning through Thursday, October 8, 2020 due to potential exposure. The rest of the school will remain in Onsite Learning.

Holy Family’s decision was made after conferring with the Ellis County Health Department and school leaders. Affected students/parents have been communicated with regarding their children’s remote learning as necessary. 

TMP-Marian is not currently addressing any positive cases, and 5 students are in quarantine due to potential exposure. 

While decisions regarding the method of learning (onsite, hybrid, or remote) are made based on our established plan and collaboration with others, we do however have the discretion to change the mode of instruction in the event of clusters of infection or loss of staffing. 

Mrs. Wentling, Mr. Meitner and Mr. Andrews continue to be in regular communication with Ellis County health officials, local educational leaders and medical professionals to determine the phase of education for our students. This collaborative group daily monitors local COVID positive numbers to continue to safely educate our students according to data which consists of medical statistics and community/parent feedback.

One HFE class goes to remote learning; others and TMP-M to go onsite learning next week

SEDGWICK COUNTY — A Kansas felon arrested in connection with two cases of sex assault has made his first court appearance in the case this week.

 Patrick Newborn, 33, Wichita, was charged with 2 counts of aggravated burglary, 3 counts of aggravated robbery, rape, attempted rape, 2 counts of aggravated intimidation of a witness or victim, aggravated criminal sodomy, aggravated assault, aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer, interference with law enforcement, 3 counts of criminal possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, and battery.&nbsp; The last charge is a misdemeanor while the previous counts are felonies, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

On August 29, Wichita police began a sexual assault and robbery investigation following an incident reported in the 6100 Block of East Boston, according to Captain Jason Stephens.

Two victims reported an attempted robbery at gunpoint. The female victims reported the suspect, later identified as 33-year-old Patrick Newborn of Wichita, had committed a sexual assault against her one to two weeks earlier, according to Stephens.

On Sept. 13, police investigated another sexual assault involving a different victim at a residence in the 700 Block of South Pershing in Wichita. Investigators determined the cases were likely connected and later confirmed that.

On Sept. 15, police learned that Newborn was wanted on a felony warrant for being a parole absconder, according to Stephens. Officers located him Tuesday in 9100 Block of East Harry in Wichita. Upon confronting him, Newborn pulled a handgun and threatened the officers.

The officers retreated from the residence and called in the SWAT team. The SWAT team established a perimeter around the location and spent 7 hours communicating with Newborn.

Just after 1a.m. Sept. 16, he gave himself up and was taken into custody without further incident, according to Stephens.

He has a previous conviction for Aggravated Indecent Liberties, Sex Intercourse with a victim under the age of 16, according to the Kansas Dept. of Corrections.

Newborn is being held on a bond of $250,000.&nbsp; Attorneys in the case are scheduled to discuss it with Judge Jeff Syrios on October 1, according to the district attorney's office.

The female victims reported the suspect, later identified as 33-year-old Patrick Newborn of Wichita, had committed a sexual assault against her one to two weeks earlier, according to Stephens.On Sept. 13, police investigated another sexual assault involving a different victim at a residence in the 700 Block of South Pershing in Wichita. Investigators determined the cases were likely connected and later confirmed that.On Tuesday police learned that Newborn was wanted on a felony warrant for being a parole absconder, according to Stephens. Officers located him Tuesday in 9100 Block of East Harry in Wichita. Barbara Kay (VonFeldt) Kisner, age 74, of Hays, Kansas, died Monday, September 21, 2020, at the Good Samaritan Society of Hays.&nbsp; She was born September 22, 1945, in Hays, Kansas, to William B. and Clara (Windholz) VonFeldt. &nbsp; She married Jon F. Kisner on September 4, 1970, in Victoria, Kansas, and have now celebrated 50 years of marriage.

She was a homemaker, a price coordinator at Foods Bonanza for 12 years until they closed, cooked at TMP-Marian High School, and worked at the HMC Cancer Center.

She grew up in Victoria, Kansas, and was a 1963 graduate of Victoria High School.&nbsp; While living in Victoria, she was the children’s choir director at St. Fidelis Catholic Church for many years.&nbsp; Barbara and Jon lived to Hays since 1985 then moved to Texas for four years and again back to Hays in 2016. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays, Kansas, and St. Fidelis Daughters of Isabella.&nbsp; Singing was an important part of Barbara’s life.&nbsp; She, along with Jon, sang for all occasions in Victoria for many years.&nbsp; Barbara enjoyed cooking and entertaining in her home, and had a special touch for decorating for all the holidays.

Survivors include her husband, Jon F. Kisner, of the home; one son, Curtis Kisner and wife, Michelle, Keller, TX; two daughters, Tonya Kisner, Leavenworth, KS; Simone Anderson and husband, Christian, Keller, TX; three granddaughters, Aubrianna Kisner, Cadence Anderson, Carmyn Anderson; one sister-in-law, Janell Newton and husband, Gary, Wichita, KS; and one brother-in-law, Jerry Karlin, Hays, KS.

She was preceded in death by her parents. &nbsp;

HAYS - More than a month after the MIAA announced
the suspension of fall sports due to the COVID-19 pandemic, three of the
conference’s schools have announced they are moving forward with a partial 2020
football schedule beginning in late October.

Despite the move by Pittsburg State, Missouri
Western State and Nebraska-Kearney to play games this fall, Fort Hays State
has no such plans.

“We felt like that was going against what we
had originally voted on.” said FHSU athletic director Curtis Hammeke. “We made
our plans and our practice structures with the idea of not playing any games
this fall, so we’re going to stick to that.”

The move by the three schools to play comes
after last Thursday’s 10-2 vote by the MIAA athletic directors to move forward with
a four-game fall schedule. The motion did not gain approval from the conference’s
presidents who had a 5-5 split on the vote with two of the league’s presidents
abstaining.

Pittsburg State, Missouri Western State and
Nebraska-Kearney will each play two games against one another while filling out
the remainder of the schedules with other NCAA II and NCAA I FCS institutions.

And while there’s technically nothing wrong
with conference schools scheduling games, Hammeke senses some frustration amongst
the other MIAA members.

“I do believe the intent of that action was
for no one to participate against outside competition this fall for a number of
reasons in terms of safety with their student athletes.” Hammeke said. “Fort
Hays has chosen not to go against that, feeling like it’s the ethical thing to
do, but I do think there is a sense of frustration.” 

“I think we’ll probably see some others maybe
try to put themselves in a position to play games this fall, we just aren’t going
to follow along in that path. I don’t think it makes sense.” Hammeke added. “We’re
going to hold to our plans that we had in place and hopefully have a sense of
gratitude for how much we are able to do right now rather than focus on what we’re
not getting to do.”

FHSU head football coach Chris Brown agrees
with Hammeke’s decision to no play this fall.

“When we heard that the season was canceled
and there would be no fall competition, we set a plan for our kids to make sure
they were healthy and safe and ready to actually play a true football game and
I just don’t think we’re there yet.” Brown said. “We moved things a little bit
slower than we normally do during the fall, but that’s because we didn’t really
do much through the spring and through the summer. We’ve had a plan set since
this all happened and we’re going to stay to that plan and make sure our kids are
ready to play when that time comes.” 

Discussions are ongoing for MIAA spring
volleyball and soccer schedules. Brown said football will likely have three or four
playing dates in the spring that will be either games or scrimmages against
outside competition.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Thousands of people are expected to pay their respects at the Supreme Court to the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the women’s rights champion, leader of the court’s liberal bloc and feminist icon&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/684a0e1a2ae195ec32aa64684143e2f3">who died last week</a>.

Even with the court closed to the public because of the coronavirus pandemic and Washington already consumed with talk of Ginsburg’s replacement, the justice’s former colleagues, family, close friends and the public will have the chance Wednesday and Thursday to pass by the casket of the second woman to serve on the Supreme Court.

The sad occasion is expected to bring together the remaining eight justices for the first time since the building was closed in March and they resorted to meetings by telephone.

Ginsburg will lie in repose for two days at the court where she served for 27 years and, before that, argued six cases for gender equality in the 1970s.

Following a private ceremony Wednesday in the court’s Great Hall, her casket will be moved outside the building to the top of the court’s front steps so that public mourners can pay their respects in line with public health guidance for the pandemic.

Since her death Friday evening, people have been leaving flowers, notes, placards and all manner of Ginsburg paraphernalia outside the court in tribute to the woman who became known in her final years as the “Notorious RBG.” Court workers cleared away the items and cleaned the court plaza and sidewalk in advance of Wednesday’s ceremony.

Following past practice at the tradition-laden court, Ginsburg’s casket is expected to arrive just before 8:30 a.m. CDT Wednesday, the court said. Supreme Court police will carry it up the court steps, which will be lined by former Ginsburg law clerks serving as honorary pallbearers.

Chief Justice John Roberts and the other justices will be in the Great Hall when the casket arrives and is placed on the Lincoln Catafalque, the platform on which President Abraham Lincoln’s coffin rested in the Capitol rotunda in 1865. A 2016 portrait of Ginsburg by artist Constance P. Beaty will be displayed nearby.

It’s unclear whether President Donald Trump would visit the court before he leaves town Wednesday afternoon, though he did pay respects when Justice John Paul Stevens died last year and President Barack Obama visited the court after Justice Antonin Scalia’s death in 2016.

The entrance to the courtroom, along with Ginsburg’s chair and place on the bench next to Roberts, have been draped in black, a longstanding court custom. These visual signs of mourning, which in years past have reinforced the sense of loss, will largely go unseen this year. The court begins its new term Oct. 5, but the justices will not be in the courtroom and instead will hear arguments by phone.

After the private ceremony inside the court, Ginsburg’s casket will be on public view from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday.

On Friday, Ginsburg will lie in state at the Capitol, the first woman to do so and only the second Supreme Court justice after William Howard Taft. Taft had also been president. Rosa Parks, a private citizen as opposed to a government official, is the only woman who has lain in honor at the Capitol.

Ginsburg will be buried beside her husband, Martin, in a private ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery next week. Martin Ginsburg died in 2010. She is survived by a son and a daughter, four grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Ginsburg’s death from cancer at age 87 has added another layer of tumult to an already chaotic election year. Trump and Senate Republicans are plowing ahead with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/be4aa94786c66bd13763ea8ee30e08a6">plans to have a new justice on the bench</a>, perhaps before the Nov. 3 election.

Only Chief Justice Roger Taney, who died in October 1864, died closer to a presidential election. Lincoln waited until December to nominate his replacement, Salmon Chase, who was confirmed the same day.

🎥 Thousands to honor Ginsburg at Supreme Court

WASHINGTON (AP) — In a sweeping bipartisan vote that takes a government shutdown off the table, the House passed a temporary government-wide funding bill Tuesday night, shortly after President Donald Trump prevailed in a behind-the-scenes fight over his farm bailout.

The stopgap measure will keep federal agencies fully up and running into December, giving lame-duck lawmakers time to digest the election and decide whether to pass the annual government funding bills by then or kick them to the next administration. The budget year ends Sept. 30.

The 359-57 vote came after considerable behind-the-scenes battling over proposed add-ons. The final agreement gives the administration continued immediate authority to dole out Agriculture Department subsidies in the run-up to Election Day. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., retreated from an initial draft that sparked a furor with Republicans and farm-state Democrats, who said she was interfering with the routine implementation of the rural safety net as low crop prices and Trump’s own tariffs slam farm country.

“It’s a big deal. This is cash flow to mom and pop businesses all over rural America,” said Texas Rep. Michael Conaway, top Republican on the House Agriculture Committee. “They get them every year in October. They come like clockwork.”

In talks Tuesday, Pelosi restored a farm aid funding patch sought by the administration, which has sparked the ire of Democrats who said it plays political favorites as it gives out bailout money to farmers and ranchers.

But the financial fix had been passed before, and other Democrats, including endangered House incumbents in states like Iowa and Minnesota, pressed for it.

“Now is not the time to be playing politics with aid to farmers or the assistance needed to save our families and local economies from economic disaster,” said freshman Rep. Abby Finkenauer, D-Iowa.

The measure is the bare minimum accomplishment for Capitol Hill’s powerful Appropriations committees, who pride themselves on their deal-making abilities despite gridlock in other corners of Congress. It came after bipartisan negotiations on a huge COVID-19 relief package imploded and appear unlikely to be rekindled — especially since the death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has upended U.S. politics.

“We need to keep the government open but we also need additional COVID relief for the American people,” said Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla.

The legislation — called a continuing resolution, or CR, in Washington-speak — would keep every federal agency running at current funding levels through Dec. 11, which will keep the government afloat past an election that could reshuffle Washington’s balance of power.

The measure also extends many programs whose funding or authorizations lapse on Sept. 30, including the federal flood insurance program, highway and transit programs, and a long set of extensions of various health programs, such as a provision to prevent Medicaid cuts to hospitals that serve many poor people.

It also finances the possible transition to a new administration if Joe Biden wins the White House and would stave off an unwelcome COVID-caused increase in Medicare Part B premiums for outpatient doctor visits.

The underlying stopgap measure deals with the 30% of the federal government’s day-to-day budget that goes to Cabinet agency operations funded by Congress each year. The annual appropriations process broke down in the Senate this year and it’s unclear but probably unlikely that the $1.3 trillion in agency spending bills will be enacted this year, even in a post-election lame duck session, especially if Biden is elected to replace Trump.

In the past, both Democrats and Republicans have sought to use government funding deadlines and must-past temporary funding bills as leverage to try to win concessions elsewhere on Washington’s agenda. Such efforts invariably fail.

Republicans in 2013 used it in a failed attempt to prevent implementation of the so-called Obamacare health law, and Senate Democrats returned the favor in 2018 in a futile effort to force debate on permitting immigrants brought into the country illegally as children to remain in the U.S.

Pelosi studiously avoided such a confrontation this time.

The Indians were to host Abilene but their district has moved to remote learning due to an increase in COVID-19 cases and has suspended all extracurricular activities until at least Oct 5.

In a notice to parents/guardians, USD 435 Superintendent Greg Brown wrote, "Please understand this is absolutely the last thing we want to do. We understand how important it is to have our students in school, receiving a first-rate educational experience, but COVID-19 has struck our teachers and support staff significantly. We have four (4) adults who have already tested positive and (4) more not feeling well, who are being tested as I speak. The combination of adults who have tested positive and the related quarantine orders have made it necessary to take this measure. We hope to be back in school on Monday, October 5th. During the next two weeks, we will be looking at other measures to provide the face to face instruction we know our community desires in spite of the increased COVID-19 testing results."

Johnny Joe Leal, age 49, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 21, 2020, at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas.  He was born on February 12, 1971, in Karnes City, Texas, the son of Frank M. &amp; Maria Martinez Leal.  A resident of Scott City, Kansas since 1995 moving from Karnes City, Texas, he worked for B&amp;H Paving in Scott City, Kansas.

Johnny was a real man with a heart of gold.  He loved his Texano music, spending time with family and friends, and loved to make people laugh and smile.  Johnny was very passionate and spending time with his grandchildren and was very close to his little sister Maria who he looked up to and was a diehard fan of the Dallas Cowboys.

The&nbsp;Young Alumni Award&nbsp;is presented to graduates in 10-&nbsp;to 15-year reunion classes. The award recognizes&nbsp;alumni,&nbsp;early in their careers after college,&nbsp;who&nbsp;have made an impact&nbsp;in their professions and in their&nbsp;communities&nbsp;through&nbsp;outstanding professional and educational achievements, community&nbsp;service,&nbsp;and by earning significant&nbsp;honors and awards.&nbsp;Candidates must hold a bachelor's degree from FHSU&nbsp;and be under age 40 as of Jan. 1 of the year the awards are presented.

Profiles of the 2020&nbsp;Honorees:

Since graduating in 1966 with her&nbsp;B.S.&nbsp;in&nbsp;education, Lyn Fenwick’s career has been diverse.&nbsp;She first taught sixth-grade, and while her husband served as an Air Force officer, she taught high school English in New York and Massachusetts. They regard their opportunities to live and travel throughout America, meeting people from across our nation, as a continuation of their FHSU educations. When they moved to Texas, Lyn received her law degree from Baylor University. She was a partner in law firms in Waco and Dallas, an adjunct professor at Baylor, and she appeared before the United States Supreme Court. Like many professional couples, they adapted their careers for one another. When Larry’s career took them to Georgia and North Carolina, Lyn was licensed but chose to begin writing and pursuing her art, starting with art classes at FHSU.

Baylor University Press published “Should the Children Pray?” for which she was selected as Georgia Nonfiction Author of the Year, and Dutton published “Private Choices, Public Consequences.” In Atlanta, she served on the boards of the Pastel Society and the Portrait Society.&nbsp; Wherever they have lived, Lyn has served her community by volunteering in various ways.

She and her husband, Larry, have chosen to retire in Kansas, living in her fourth-generation family home. Her most recent book, published by the University Press of Kansas, is “Prairie Bachelor,” about a Kansas homesteader and the Populist Movement. Returning to Kansas has given them the opportunity to reconnect with FHSU.

Larry and Lyn believe in the importance of giving back to their community. Because of Lyn’s love of books, they contributed to the planned renovation of Forsyth Library, gifted their Oz Collection to FHSU, and supported the biennial College of Education’s Fall Young Readers’ Conference by sponsoring a respected children’s book illustrator.

They also established the community supported Lori Lamb Legacy Grant scholarship program at Macksville High School. When Lyn was asked to deliver the graduation address there, she began by reminding students to thank those who help them throughout their lives. The author of 22 books and 21 book chapters,&nbsp;three&nbsp;digital publications, and more than 100 articles related to U.S. History, American Agriculture, Rural, West, Midwest,&nbsp;and South, Dr. R. Douglas Hart drew on&nbsp;his B.A. and M.A. in&nbsp;history&nbsp;from Fort Hays State&nbsp;and&nbsp;his Ph.D. in American&nbsp;history&nbsp;at Kansas State University to&nbsp;record a lifetime of&nbsp;achievements.&nbsp;

Dr. Hurt began his career as a Post-doctoral Fellow in the History of Science and Technology at the National Museum of Science and Technology at the Smithsonian Institution, now known as the Museum of American History. His career then&nbsp;took him to several destinations including Texas Tech University,&nbsp;the&nbsp;Ohio Historical Society, the State Historical Society of Missouri, Iowa State University, and currently the Department of History at Purdue University.

Dr. Hurt served as the head of the Department of History at Purdue University for 15 years. During that time, he worked to increase the department from 27 to 37 faculty. Proudly, he has increased the number of women faculty to more than 50 percent and increased the number of minority faculty&nbsp;in the department.

Besides his career as a professor and writer, Dr. Hurt has&nbsp;served in&nbsp;several&nbsp;other roles, including member of&nbsp;several&nbsp;advisory boards, consultant&nbsp;and&nbsp;advisor,&nbsp;and&nbsp;as&nbsp;the United Way campaign&nbsp;chair in 2005, 2006, and 2012.&nbsp;

In 1979, Dr. Hurt received the Young Alumni Award from Fort Hays State University and has continued to show his support to the University by presenting lectures to the agricultural history class taught by Professor Brittany Howell and public presentations sponsored by the Department of Agriculture and Department of History.&nbsp;

Charlie&nbsp;Riedel celebrates&nbsp;his 20th anniversary as a staff photographer for The Associated Press in Kansas City&nbsp;this&nbsp;October. While in this&nbsp;position,&nbsp;he has covered primarily&nbsp;news and sporting events in&nbsp;Kansas and Missouri,&nbsp;but&nbsp;he&nbsp;has also been involved in numerous national stories including Hurricane Katrina recovery&nbsp;efforts, the 2004 Presidential election, wildfires in the western United States, and post 9/11 activities at the World Trade Center in New York.&nbsp;In addition to notable news events, Riedel has also frequently covered major sporting events including: The Super Bowl, Kentucky Derby, golf tournaments, MLB playoffs, World Series and six Olympics.

Prior to his current career, Riedel used his B.S. in Communications (journalism) as a photo editor for&nbsp;The Hays Daily News,&nbsp;where he documented life in small-town Kansas&nbsp;for 17 years. While at&nbsp;the&nbsp;Hays Daily,&nbsp;he was named&nbsp;the&nbsp;National Press Photographers Association Region 7 Photographer of the year three times&nbsp;and won&nbsp;numerous state and regional photojournalism awards.&nbsp;

Riedel’s photos have&nbsp;appeared in prominent news media across the nation,&nbsp;including&nbsp;Time Magazine for his photo coverage of the Deepwater Horizon spill. His photos have also appeared in&nbsp;multiple “Top Photos of the Year” compilations.

He&nbsp;gives&nbsp;back to the community&nbsp;through speaking engagements&nbsp;on several&nbsp;university campuses and high schools&nbsp;and by serving as a judge at&nbsp;the Five State Photo Competition,&nbsp;numerous&nbsp;regional photo competitions, and&nbsp;a&nbsp;national Photo of the Year Competition. Riedel also&nbsp;donated his collection of the Fort Hays State University photographs to the university archive.

A lifelong&nbsp;faculty member and friend&nbsp;of&nbsp;FHSU, Marla&nbsp;Staab&nbsp;earned her B.A. in 1973 and her M.S. in 1974 in&nbsp;speech-language pathology. She&nbsp;began her professional career in 1977 as a part-time&nbsp;clinical&nbsp;instructor in the FHSU Speech-Language Pathology program.&nbsp;Staab’s&nbsp;goal as an instructor was to help students develop their clinical skills as they worked with children with speech and other language difficulties. This&nbsp;led her to spend hours in Forsyth Library using the research tools available&nbsp;at the time&nbsp;to study&nbsp;a wide variety&nbsp;of syndromes&nbsp;and&nbsp;developmental disorders.

In 1994, Staab was chosen as the first full-time&nbsp;clinical&nbsp;coordinator for the Herndon Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic on campus. She was responsible for administration, clinical teaching, and supporting the clinical instructors in developing&nbsp;supervisory&nbsp;skills. Along with these duties,&nbsp;and in conjunction&nbsp;with other clinical instructors, she designed and&nbsp;compiled&nbsp;supervisor and student clinic handbooks that&nbsp;included resources for clinic instructions, expectations/guidelines for students, as well as performance standards and competencies for both instructors and students. The resources she created are&nbsp;still used today in an online format.&nbsp;

Staab and her peers developed a plan to increase public awareness of communication disorders as well as the services provided at the Herndon Clinic through brochures, presentations to medical communities, and contributions to building a website. In addition,&nbsp;she worked closely with&nbsp;a colleague&nbsp;to complete&nbsp;a literature review and design the Clinical Competency Rating Scale (CCRS), which was presented as a poster session at the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) National Conference in 2006. This&nbsp;presentation helped bring attention to the need for stating student learning outcomes for both academic and clinical skills to a national audience&nbsp;and&nbsp;are now part of the national accreditation standards.

Her&nbsp;professional and personal&nbsp;contributions did not stop at the university level. Staab collaborated with various agencies to support and improve services available to children and families in Ellis and Rush Counties. A multi-instrumentalist,&nbsp;Dan Weller&nbsp;earned his B.A. in&nbsp;music&nbsp;at Fort Hays State&nbsp;and&nbsp;went&nbsp;on to work as&nbsp;a&nbsp;professional studio and touring&nbsp;musician. Weller lives&nbsp;in Kansas City and Nashville&nbsp;and has&nbsp;shared the stage&nbsp;with&nbsp;some of the top touring artists in America, including&nbsp;Florida Georgia Line, Taylor Swift, Tim McGraw, Kid Rock, ZZ Top, Back Street Boys, Nelly,&nbsp;and many more.&nbsp;

Weller&nbsp;has&nbsp;toured extensively in&nbsp;North America,&nbsp;Europe,&nbsp;and Australia,&nbsp;appearing in venues that range from small&nbsp;local&nbsp;clubs to sold-out&nbsp;shows in&nbsp;Madison Square Garden,&nbsp;Major League Baseball parks,&nbsp;and NFL stadiums. One Fourth of July show on the National Mall in D.C. was performed in front of an audience&nbsp;of nearly&nbsp;500,000,&nbsp;the largest&nbsp;he has appeared before to date.&nbsp;

He&nbsp;has also been featured on talk shows, television shows, news channels,&nbsp;and special TV events&nbsp;including&nbsp;Ellen, Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Voice,&nbsp;and Good Morning America.&nbsp;

Weller continues to mentor musicians and artists in both Kansas City and Nashville.  He also works to pair producers, musicians, and artists to help bright upcoming talent connect with professional opportunities. His betterment extends beyond the music world, as he has partnered with TOMS Shoes and ‘Save The Children.’ He is an active volunteer leader with Troop 181 of the Boy Scouts of America.&nbsp;

Aaron&nbsp;Bernasconi

Bernasconi’s&nbsp;service as the&nbsp;Senior Advisor to Deputy United States Trade Representative, Ambassador C.J. Mahoney, for the past two years is&nbsp;but&nbsp;one of the many accomplishments that have&nbsp;made&nbsp;this young alum deserving of this honor. The pinnacle achievement of his career is the successful renegotiation and modernization of the North American Free Trade Agreement, now known as the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). On Jan. 29 of this year, Bernasconi had the&nbsp;honor&nbsp;of joining the President as he signed the USMCA into law, securing economic benefits and solidifying the future of America’s farmers, ranchers, workers, and entrepreneurs.

In addition to his career endeavors, Bernasconi – who earned his B.A. in political science – has volunteered as a&nbsp;youth leader&nbsp;at Sync Student Ministries and served as a leader, mentor, and counselor to a group of students, helping them&nbsp;navigate the ups and downs of teenage life in a safe and shame-free environment. Bernasconi&nbsp;takes&nbsp;pride&nbsp;in his efforts to&nbsp;help hundreds of students find their passions, realize their&nbsp;potential, repair damaged relationships, overcome immense hardships, and unlock their potential.&nbsp;

Also, serving as a Youth Education Volunteer at Nashville International Center for Empowerment (NICE), Bernasconi had the opportunity to empower high school refugees&nbsp;and immigrant students,&nbsp;connecting them to&nbsp;services&nbsp;that help&nbsp;mitigate the effects of interrupted education, and overcoming cultural and language barriers to learning. Bernasconi assisted in academic tutoring on all subjects, worked to strengthen students’ literacy proficiency, and aided students&nbsp;in&nbsp;the transition&nbsp;to a&nbsp;new life in America.&nbsp;

One of&nbsp;the other notable honors he has received came from the senior leadership at&nbsp;<a></a>RAM Tool Inc., where he was recognized&nbsp;as one of the company’s top personal trainers. He also rose to become&nbsp;one of the top sales representatives&nbsp;when he worked for&nbsp;Techtronic Industries North America Inc. He was&nbsp;even recognized by&nbsp;U.S. Senator&nbsp;Jerry Moran at a national level for outstanding service as a Doorkeeper&nbsp;to&nbsp;the&nbsp;U.S.&nbsp;Senate’s&nbsp;Sergeant at Arms, accompanying&nbsp;the senator&nbsp;as his personal guest to a Joint Session of&nbsp;Congress attended by&nbsp;French President, Emmanuel Macron.&nbsp;

Ashley&nbsp;Adorante

This&nbsp;Sigma&nbsp;Sigma&nbsp;Sigma&nbsp;(Alpha Gamma) alumna&nbsp;is an active volunteer&nbsp;with FHSU,&nbsp;the Rotary Club of Kansas City, Kan.,&nbsp;the&nbsp;Kansas City Chamber of Commerce, and several other community groups and organizations. Her extensive record of&nbsp;leadership and service in so many areas&nbsp;make&nbsp;Ashley Adorante&nbsp;an obvious choice as this year’s&nbsp;Nita M. Landrum Award winner.&nbsp;

Adorante serves&nbsp;on&nbsp;leadership&nbsp;boards, steering committees, and planning committees all around the Kansas City area. She stands out in so many settings because she is routinely the first to identify ways to pursue better, faster, more economical ways of conducting business. She&nbsp;has amassed a tremendous record of achievement as a planner, a leader,&nbsp;and an organizer of diverse events, large and small.&nbsp;She&nbsp;works tirelessly as&nbsp;an advocate&nbsp;with&nbsp;volunteer groups, inspiring&nbsp;others to attend and participate as well.

Adorante&nbsp;received a B.S.&nbsp;in 2001 in physical education (health and wellness) and often returns to FHSU&nbsp;to&nbsp;volunteer&nbsp;at alumni events and Tri Sigma activities. She eagerly supports and attends FHSU sporting events and other alumni events around the Kansas City&nbsp;area wearing her Tiger&nbsp;Gold&nbsp;and, at times, suiting&nbsp;up&nbsp;as&nbsp;Victor&nbsp;E. Tiger at local&nbsp;events in Kansas City.&nbsp;

When she is not volunteering, she is working as the Outreach Coordinator for the Masonic Cancer Alliance at&nbsp;The University of Kansas Cancer Center, an organization that brings together patient care, research, and support professionals throughout Kansas and western Missouri. Adorante is specifically responsible for helping to develop and implement&nbsp;statewide cancer outreach and education programs with a focus on promoting community awareness of cancer prevention and early detection, sun safety,&nbsp;and she does it all with a focus on&nbsp;assuring the inclusion of&nbsp;people in&nbsp;underserved communities.&nbsp;

Like many professional couples, they adapted their careers for one another. When Larry’s career took them to Georgia and North Carolina, Lyn was licensed but chose to begin writing and pursuing her art, starting with art classes at FHSU.Baylor University Press published “Should the Children Pray?” for which she was selected as Georgia Nonfiction Author of the Year, and Dutton published “Private Choices, Public Consequences.” In Atlanta, she served on the boards of the Pastel Society and the Portrait Society.&nbsp; Wherever they have lived, Lyn has served her community by volunteering in various ways.She and her husband, Larry, have chosen to retire in Kansas, living in her fourth-generation family home. During that time, he worked to increase the department from 27 to 37 faculty. On Jan. 29 of this year, Bernasconi had the&nbsp;honor&nbsp;of joining the President as he signed the USMCA into law, securing economic benefits and solidifying the future of America’s farmers, ranchers, workers, and entrepreneurs.In addition to his career endeavors, Bernasconi – who earned his B.A. in political science – has volunteered as a&nbsp;youth leader&nbsp;at Sync Student Ministries and served as a leader, mentor, and counselor to a group of students, helping them&nbsp;navigate the ups and downs of teenage life in a safe and shame-free environment. She eagerly supports and attends FHSU sporting events and other alumni events around the Kansas City&nbsp;area wearing her Tiger&nbsp;Gold&nbsp;and, at times, suiting&nbsp;up&nbsp;as&nbsp;Victor&nbsp;E. Tiger at local&nbsp;events in Kansas City.&nbsp;When she is not volunteering, she is working as the Outreach Coordinator for the Masonic Cancer Alliance at&nbsp;The University of Kansas Cancer Center, an organization that brings together patient care, research, and support professionals throughout Kansas and western Missouri. Charity golf tourney to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters

Lifelong Goodland, KS resident Linda Lou Fogo, 83, passed away on 
Thursday, September 17, 2020 at Wheat Ridge Acres in Goodland with her 
family at her side.

Linda was born on July 22, 1937 to Buford Wayne and Helen Mae 
(Cullins) Hevner.&nbsp; She was one of four children.&nbsp; She was raised on the 
family farm and attended Western Star Country School in the early 
grades.&nbsp; She graduated from Sherman Community High School in 1955.&nbsp;

On November 24, 1955, Linda was united in marriage to George R. “Bud”
 Fogo.&nbsp; In May of 1956, Bud was inducted into the US Army and spent his 
basic training at Fort Ord, California.&nbsp; In October of the same year, 
Bud was transferred to Germany.&nbsp; In 1957, Linda sailed to Germany aboard
 the S.S. Amsterdam, where the couple spent the remainder of their time 
living in the small West German community of Haibach.&nbsp;

In 1958, they returned to Goodland, where Bud started working for the
 Rock Island Railroad and Linda became a housewife raising a family and 
taking care of their four children; Sheryl, Debra, Kelly and Jacque.&nbsp; 
Linda was part of the Sherman County Century Family.

She was a member of the First Christian Church, CWF and was a 
faithful American Red Cross Blood Donor.&nbsp; She was also a member of the 
Garden Club, and the Sherman County Historical Society.&nbsp; She was an avid
 sports fan, especially for the Denver Broncos, and loved to watch her 
children and grandchildren participate in sports.&nbsp; She committed her 
life to caring for her husband, her parents and her children.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband George R. “Bud” 
Fogo, her brothers Rex Hevner and Gary Hevner, and a sister Connie 
Hevner Hammond.

She is survived by her four children; Sheryl (Frank) Linden of 
Goodland, Debra (Tony) Martin of Goodland, Kelly (Tera) Fogo of 
Centennial, Colorado and Jacque (Kendall) Cooper of Goodland.&nbsp; She is 
also survived by her nine grandchildren; Lindsey (Wes) Ludolph, Brandon 
(Amber) Linden, Abigail (Kenton) Keith, Emily (Kade) Bloom, Jesse 
Cooper, Tristan Cooper, Kylie Fogo, Kamdyn Fogo, and Kaelor Fogo, eleven
 great grandchildren, a brother-in-law Steve Hammond of Littleton, CO, 
and two sister-in-laws; Marie Hevner Kleine of Gulf Breeze, FL and 
Patricia Willoughby of Basehor, KS.

Mary Ann Randa, 86, Liebenthal, died Friday, September 18, 2020 at HaysMed as a result of COVID-19.

She was born July 8, 1934 in 
Liebenthal, the daughter of Bernard and Mary (Depperschmidt) Herrman.&nbsp; 
She graduated from Schoenchen High School in 1952.&nbsp; On September 30, 
1953 she was united in marriage to Marvin Anthony Randa in Liebenthal, 
and they celebrated 39 years of marriage before he preceded her in death
 on October 2, 1992.&nbsp; For 35 years she was the Community Postal Officer 
at the Liebenthal Post Office.&nbsp; Her memberships included St. Joseph 
Catholic Church in Liebenthal and St. Ann’s Altar Society.&nbsp; She was an 
outgoing and social person who enjoyed going places, visiting with 
people, and learning about her Volga-German heritage.&nbsp; She loved God, 
prayed the rosary, was active in the church, and enjoyed sitting on her 
porch reading a book.&nbsp; Mary Ann also loved her family and looked forward
 to all holidays, especially when she could spend them with her 
children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Survivors include three sons; Ronald 
Randa of Hays, Leslie Randa of LaCrosse, and Lyle Randa and wife Amy of 
Wichita, five daughters; Linda Gottschalk and husband Loren of Basehor, 
Doris Scheideman and husband Kent of Haysville, Marilyn Randa of Derby, 
Nadine Foreman and husband Steve of Haysville, and Pamela Winkler and 
husband Robert of Charleston, SC, a daughter-in-law; Barbara Randa of 
Huntsville, AL, two sisters; Elvera Rupp-Mock of Haysville and Alfrieda 
Dinges of Hays, a sister-in-law; Gloria Herrman of LaCrosse, 23 
grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren, her special friend; LaVern Meier 
of Wichita, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her 
parents, her husband Marvin, a son; Gary Randa, two brothers; Wilbert 
and Richard Herrman, and a sister; Firmina Herrman.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 
10:00 am on Wednesday, September 23, 2020 at St. Joseph Catholic Church 
in Liebenthal, with Fr. Stephen Dabanka officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow
 in St. Joseph Cemetery, Liebenthal.&nbsp; Visitation will be from 6:00 pm 
until 8:00 on Tuesday at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.&nbsp; A St. Ann’s
