Alfred Clarence 'Bud' Lager

Alfred “Bud” Clarence Lager died on October 1, 2020 at the Sheridan County Long Term Care in Hoxie, KS. Bud was born on August 24, 1927, in Hays, KS, to Fred and Irene (Comeau) Lager. The family grew up on a farm north of Grinnell, KS. Bud was the oldest of 6 children. He met Bonita Heim at a local dance and they were married on August 23, 1950. Together they raised 4 children on a dairy farm north of Grinnell, KS, before moving into Grinnell in 1997.

Bud loved the land and enjoyed the beauty of seeing the cycle of life in the seasons. Whether on a tractor, combine, or in the barn milking cows, Bud knew the gift of hard work and the dedication it takes to provide for a family. He loved playing cards, loved going to polka dances with Bonnie, loved visiting with family and neighbors, attending farm auctions and learning the latest about the farming and the dairy industry.

Bud was dedicated to his faith and was a member of the Knights of Columbus for 75 years. Rarely did he miss Mass on Sunday and he modeled for his children a love for the Church.

Bud is survived by sons, Ron (Linda), of Grinnell, KS, Father John, of Denver, CO, and Mark ,of Ventura, CA; his sisters, Rose (†Willard) Hughes, of Oakley, KS, Pat (†Martin) Hampel, of Kingman, KS, and Janet (Steve) Kaiser, of Quinter, KS; sister in law Susan (†Edwin) of Yukon, OK; grandchildren, Julie (Chris) Ribardo, of Bryan, TX, Brenda, of Hays, KS, Nate (Kelly), of Wichita, KS, Father Brian, of Hays, KS, Kevin (Melanie), of Seguin, KS, Marty (Abbie), of Colby, KS, and Austin, of Atchison, KS, and 16 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by, his wife Bonnie who died this past March; his daughter Shirley Pianalto (†Joe) and granddaughters, Annie and Jennie; infant sons Kevin, Michael, and Joseph; granddaughter-in-law Hannah Lager and infant son Matthias Lager, and his brother Leroy.

Visitation is 5-7:00 p.m. Monday, October 5, 2020, at St. Pauls Catholic Church, Angelus, with a Vigil at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will take place at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 6, 2020, at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Angelus, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Capuchin Province of Mid-America in Denver, CO; St. Paul’s Church in Angelus, or the Sheridan County Long Term Care in Hoxie, KS.
