HUTCHINSON – Winning exhibitors at the 88th&nbsp;Kansas Junior Livestock Show (KJLS) earned premiums, while others were presented scholarships for excelling academically, in community service and in 4-H/FFA.

The largest youth livestock show in Kansas featured 661 showmen from 93 counties, who exhibited 1,395 head of livestock, including 108 market steers, 269 breeding heifers, 153 market hogs, 174 breeding gilts, 214 market lambs, 201 breeding ewes, 140 market goats and 136 commercial doe kids.

The statewide event was held October 2-4 at the Kansas State Fairgrounds in Hutchinson.

Mildred E. Holmdahl was born December 22, 1921 in Oberlin, KS to Willis 
G. and Josie E. (McKay) Miller. She passed away at the age of 98 on 
October 11, 2020 at Brookdale Grandon Farms, Mechanicsburg, PA. 
 Mildred grew up on the family farm in Rural Herndon and was a 1940 
graduate of Decatur Community High School. She married Neil Nicodemus on
 October 26, 1941, he passed away on June 15, 1944. Mildred married Eric
 Eugene Holmdahl on October 6, 1946 in Oberlin, KS. She worked as a 
switchboard operator with Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. Mildred and 
Eugene moved back to Oberlin in 1983 and she lived there until moving to
 the Andover Assisted Living Center and then most recently she lived in 
Mechanicsburg, PA to be closer to her daughter. 
 Mildred was a member of the Herndon Covenant Church, Covenant Women,
 Ladies Trio, Rawlins Co. Home Extension, and the Hobby Club in Rawlins 
Co. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading, quilting, and crafts. 
 Mildred was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Neil in 1944
 and Eugene in 1995; daughters, Janeil Jensen in 2012 and Janet 
Vermillion in 2017; brother, Glen Miller and sisters, Lois Billings and 
Edith Bremer.

She is survived by her daughter, Jean A. Hengst of 
Mechanicsburg, PA; sons-in-law, Mike Jensen and Sherrill Vermillion;

Betty Fern (Woodall) Howard died October 13, 2020, at Oakley, KS at age 
99. Her husband Frank Wilson Howard Jr. preceded her in death on Nov. 
4, 2010. They married in Colby, KS on September 20, 1942. 
Betty and her husband lived on a wheat and cattle farm seven miles north
 of Oakley, where they raised five children. Betty served as Logan 
County Hospital director of nursing for 30 years. She was an active 
member of the United Methodist Church, enjoyed the Homemakers, Sunshine 
Club, Red Hat Ladies and Logan County Hospital retired personnel 
lunches. She volunteered at the Second Time Around Shop and for church 
events and activities. 
A calm, friendly, kind and loving wife, mother, friend, grandmother, and
 great-grandmother, Betty was cherished by many. She had a deep-seated 
faith, tremendous energy and a steel backbone that helped her cope with 
difficult challenges including a son’s death, caring for her 
parents-in-law for years as they aged and then her husband during his 
declining years. She also gave a helping hand to the farm operations. 
Born on September 14, 1921, in Bent County, Colorado, to Ruth Mae Beach 
and Ammy W. Woodall, Betty grew up in Hutchinson and Colby, KS. She 
graduated from Colby High School and then from Grace Hospital School of 
Nursing, in Hutchinson, where she was first place in her class 
academically. However, the graduation honor was awarded by 
administrators to the second highest student, as they knew Betty planned
 to marry after her graduation. They determined the honor should go to 
someone who planned to start working as a nurse. When questioned about 
the incident Betty in her typical gracious way said, “She was a very 
deserving student too.” The nursing school classmates kept in close 
contact throughout their lives. 
Betty’s father also opposed her marriage. He feared Frank, who had been 
drafted into the army, would be sent to Europe during WWII and never 
return. Betty, who had faith he would return, was able to join Frank 
when he was stationed in California and Texas and was expecting their 
first child when his orders for Europe came. After a number of 
assignments, and landing on D-Day plus 13, Frank arrived back home when 
their son was almost two years old. 
Married for 68 years, Betty and Frank raised five children, Frank 
(Normi), Peoria, IL; Carolyn (Robert Rice), Carmel, CA; Linda (Tom 
West), Durango, CO; Elaine (Alan Adams) Salida, CO. David, of Oakley, 
predeceased his parents in 2004, as did two siblings, James Woodall, of 
Colby, and Zella Mae Crane, of Kerman, CA. Betty is survived by a 
sister, Donna (Bob Purdum), of Simi Valley, CA, and two nephews, Jim and
 Chris Woodall, who reside at the Howard farm. Their presence enabled 
Frank and Betty to continue living on the farm though their upper 80s. 
Betty enjoyed fishing trips to Kansas lakes with her husband and many 
trips throughout the United States including Hawaii and Alaska and 
foreign travel to Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland, Austria, Italy 
and India. She traveled to India at age 91 for a granddaughter’s wedding
 and a three-week tour of the country. The couple had snowbird winters 
in Texas for several years in their fifth-wheeler. 
Her grandchildren are Michael, Scott, Pam, Jim, Diane, Chuck, Mariah, 
Amy and Mark. Betty has 16-great-grandchildren, a number of beloved 
nieces and nephews and several step grandsons and granddaughters. 
Betty died following a COVID illness. Her family appreciates the care 
given her by the staff of the Logan County Senior Living Center where 
she resided the past four years. 
Services are pending.

JACKSON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating three suspects on drug charges after a traffic stop.

Shortly before midnight on October 10, a deputy sheriff stopped a vehicle for a traffic infraction near 150th&nbsp;and U.S. Highway 75, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.&nbsp;

Following an investigation, deputies arrested the driver of the vehicle later identified as Hunter Clayton Williams, 22, of Manhattan on requested charges possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, no drug tax stamp. He was also accused of trafficking contraband into a correctional facility, according to Morse. 

Deputies also arrested a passenger, Dakota Dawn Wood, 29, of Manhattan, on requested charges for possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia and no drug tax stamp. 

A second passenger, Nickolas LaPlant, 42, of Manhattan was arrested on a Shawnee County felony warrant for narcotics.

All three remain in custody, according to online jail records.

Gerald P. “Jerry” Laprade, age 83, of Hays, Kansas, died Monday, October 12, 2020, at Hays Medical Center.&nbsp; 

He was born September 9, 1937, in Easthampton, Massachusetts, to George and Amanda (LaPointe) Laprade.&nbsp; He married Doraleen (Kuhn) on August 8, 1962, at Victoria, Kansas.

He was a French and American History teacher at St. Francis Seminary in Victoria, and at Thomas More Prep-Marian High School in Hays.&nbsp; He also taught French at St. Joseph Catholic Grade School and part time at Fort Hays State University.&nbsp; He grew up in Easthampton, MA, and was a graduate of Holy Oke High School.&nbsp; He went to broadcasting school in Massachusetts, and worked in Iola, Concordia, and here in Hays at KAYS.&nbsp; He attended Cloud County Community College in Concordia.&nbsp; He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Science, and his Master’s Degree in French, at Fort Hays State College.&nbsp; He was a veteran of the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1958, and was stationed in Massachusetts, Oklahoma and Hawaii.&nbsp; After teaching, he enjoyed huck weaving, was an avid gardener, and a marathon runner. He participated in 42 marathons, and many 10K runs, 5K runs, and half marathons.&nbsp; He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Adoration Chapel.

Survivors include his wife, Doraleen Laprade, of the home; one brother Donald Laprade, Tuners Falls, MA; two sisters, Edna Laliberte, Easthampton, MA; Irene Labrie&nbsp; and husband, Armand, Southampton, MA.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Ernest Laprade, Father George L Laprade, Roland Laprade, Wilfred Laprade, Edmond Laprade; and one sister, Eleanor Perras.&nbsp;

A private funeral mass will be a The Basilica of St. Fidelis, Victoria, Kansas.&nbsp; A private burial will be at St. Fidelis Cemetery, Victoria, Kansas with military honors by the Victoria V.F.W. Post # 1751.&nbsp; In lieu of flowers&nbsp; the family suggests contributions to Masses in care of the mortuary.

Gerald P. 'Jerry' Laprade

Robert Buerkle, age 94, died at the Scott County Hospital in Scott City, Kansas on October 12, 2020.  He was born on May 16, 1926 in Garden City, Kansas, the son of Andrew and Beulah Armentrout Buerkle.

Robert was a farmer and an active member of the Church of the Brethren of Friend, Kansas.  He was also a 33rd degree Mason, Shriner, Scout Master, Finney County Commissioner, and a past member of the Finney County Historical Society.

On August 12, 1945 he married Donita Hagler at the Deerfield United Methodist Church.  She survives.

Three Children Anita (Dennis) Miller of Wilson, Kansas Christine (Gregg) Joy of Garden City, Kansas Gail (Karen) Buerkle of Azel, Texas.

He was born on May 16, 1926 in Garden City, Kansas, the son of Andrew and Beulah Armentrout Buerkle.Robert was a farmer and an active member of the Church of the Brethren of Friend, Kansas. He was also a 33rd degree Mason, Shriner, Scout Master, Finney County Commissioner, and a past member of the Finney County Historical Society.On August 12, 1945 he married Donita Hagler at the Deerfield United Methodist Church. She survives.Other survivors include: Three Children Anita (Dennis) Miller of Wilson, Kansas Christine (Gregg) Joy of Garden City, Kansas Gail (Karen) Buerkle of Azel, Texas. Kansas GOP denounces Davids’ attack ad linking Adkins to Brownback

TOPEKA — Republican 
congressional candidate Jake LaTurner’s campaign put a commercial into 
wide circulation that contains murky video of Topeka Mayor Michelle De 
La Isla participating in a street protest with the voiceover falsely 
telling potential voters she worked to defund the capital city’s police 
department.

De Le Isla, the Democratic
 candidate in the 2nd District and the Topeka mayor since 2018, did take
 part in a peaceful march with Topeka Police Chief Bill Cochran and 
supporters of Black Lives Matter following the May 25 death of George 
Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police.

She did take to the 
streets carrying a cardboard sign decorated with a single word: JUSTICE.
 While pausing in downtown Topeka, she did kneel with the police chief 
and others.

Topeka has not, despite 
claims underlying LaTurner’s campaign commercial, defunded the police 
department at the behest of De La Isla or anyone else. In fact, the 
Topeka City Council with backing from De La Isla as a council member and
 mayor elevated the department’s budget since 2017 by $5 million to 
surpass the $40 million mark.

Political distortions 
contained in LaTurner’s commercial are accentuated by selective editing 
of remarks by De La Isla during an August 18 news conference in which 
she pleaded with the public to avoid toxic rhetoric and asked the 
diverse community to work together to rebuild trust, said Stephanie 
Houghton, campaign manager for De La Isla.

“False attack ads like 
this are exactly what people hate about Washington-style politics,” 
Houghton said. “Kansans are looking for someone who will focus on work 
across the aisle to bridge the partisan divide and get to work on our 
toughest challenges.”

The LaTurner campaign 
declined to comment Monday on the commercial released this month into 
four media markets serving the 25-county district extending from 
Nebraska to Oklahoma. In August, LaTurner campaign spokeswoman Kara 
Zeyer told the Kansas Reflector that De La Isla had marched in support 
of the controversial movement to “defund the police.”

The attack ad from 
LaTurner, who is the Kansas state treasurer, opened with a statement by 
LaTurner that he officially approved the message. The voiceover then 
claimed De La Isla “doesn’t just talk about defunding the police, she 
does it.”

LaTurner’s commercial 
described De La Isla as a “radical” and showed her walking in a crowded 
street with protesters. The ad pivoted to a one of De La Isla’s news 
conferences in Topeka in which she spoke about the harm of racial 
discrimination and erosion of public trust as well as her appreciation 
for law enforcement’s effort to keep people safe.

The part of the ad drawing
 upon the words of De La Isla but spliced together to make a misleading 
connection between Topeka and police budget cuts, says: “Defunding the 
police … what it means is what the city of Topeka has already been 
doing.”

Condensing of her remarks 
and the splicing of video became more evident after repeated watching of
 the commercial. De La Isla’s campaign provided audio and video of the 
24-minute news conference, which was attended by Topeka’s police chief 
and city manager.

At this gathering with 
reporters, her campaign said, the mayor never indicated she endorsed a 
plan to defund Topeka law enforcement. Her remarks about what Topeka had
 been doing was related to the city’s participation since June 2018 in a
 U.S. Department of Justice program called Strengthening Police and 
Community Partnerships. It engages local law enforcement professionals 
and community leaders in dialogue to identify issues and solve problems 
collectively.

De La Isla also referenced
 at the news conference a July article in the Topeka Capital-Journal 
that fueled confusion about whether the city might limit funding to the 
police.

“It’s often way too easy 
to choose a side,” De La Isla told reporters. “I ask all of you not to 
feed into the division and please do not continue sharing 
misinformation. We do this by coming together. There is no one saying we
 will shut down our police department.”

The Kansas Republican 
Party remains disturbed by a commercial authorized by U.S. Rep. Sharice 
Davids, a Democrat in the 3rd District, that made use of an ad released 
by GOP congressional nominee Amanda Adkins. It makes the point that 
Adkins spent years as advisor, campaign manager and appointee to Sam 
Brownback while he served in the U.S. Senate and as Kansas governor.

Shannon Golden, executive 
director of the Kansas GOP, said Davids declined to debate Adkins and 
preferred to hide behind misleading television ads. Golden also linked 
Davids to California U.S. Rep. Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic speaker of 
the U.S. House.

“Sharice Davids and Nancy Pelosi know they can’t beat Amanda&nbsp;Adkins
 on her own merits, so they’ve resorted to distorting her words and 
trying to make this campaign about past politicians no longer on the 
ballot,” Golden said.

The 30-second ad from the 
Davids campaign opened with tape from the commercial put out by Adkins. 
In that spot, Adkins introduced herself as a wife, businesswoman and 
conservative.

“Stop there,” the 
voiceover said. “Amanda Adkins forgot one thing. Her 20 years as top 
adviser to Sam Brownback. In Washington and Topeka, helping pass tax 
cuts for corporations, paid for with cuts to Kansas schools and the 
childrens’ trust fund.”

The commercial flips back 
to Adkin’s ad, but her comment was reduced to the fragment “our children
 deserve better.” The problem was that Adkins, when referencing 
children, wasn’t referring to Brownback. The core of Adkins’ ad 
portrayed Washington politics as a disaster and border security as a 
disgrace. It accused Democrats, journalists and the COVID-19 pandemic, 
in that order, of destroying the economy. In relation to those 
non-Brownback points, Adkins did say Kansas children deserved better 
political representation.

“Adkins is right,” the voiceover concluded. “Better than her and Brownback.”

The Davids campaign ran the Adkins-Brownback commercial until the beginning of October.

“Amanda Adkins can try to 
downplay her decades-long career as a top advisor to Sam Brownback all 
she wants, but unfortunately for her their disastrous record of gutting 
funding for public schools and decimating the state’s budget speaks for 
itself,” said Johanna Warshaw, a campaign spokeswoman for Davids.

Kan. candidate: LaTurner ad as ‘what people hate’ about DC politics

WASHINGTON (AP)—The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday stopped the once-a-decade head count of every U.S. resident from continuing through the end of October.

President Donald Trump’s administration had asked the nation’s high court to suspend a district court’s order permitting the 2020 census to continue through the end of the month. The Trump administration argued that the head count needed to end immediately so the U.S. Census Bureau had enough time to crunch the numbers before a congressionally mandated year-end deadline for turning in figures used for deciding how many congressional seats each state gets.

A coalition of local governments and civil rights groups had sued the Trump administration, arguing that minorities and others in hard-to-count communities would be missed if the count ended early. They said the census schedule was cut short to accommodate a July order from Trump that would exclude people in the country illegally from the numbers used to decide how many congressional seats each state gets.

Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor dissented.

“Moreover, meeting the deadline at the expense of the accuracy of the census is not a cost worth paying, especially when the Government has failed to show why it could not bear the lesser cost of expending more resources to meet the deadline or continuing its prior efforts to seek an extension from Congress,” Sotomayor wrote.

Last month, U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh in San Jose, California sided with the plaintiffs and issued an injunction which suspended a Sept. 30 deadline for finishing the 2020 census and a Dec. 31 deadline for submitting numbers used to determine how many congressional seats each state gets — a process known as apportionment. That caused the deadlines to revert back to a previous Census Bureau plan that had field operations ending Oct. 31 and the reporting of apportionment figures at the end of April 2021.

When the Census Bureau, and the Commerce Department, which oversees the statistical agency, picked an Oct. 5 end date, Koh struck that down too, accusing officials of “lurching from one hasty, unexplained plan to the next ... and undermining the credibility of the Census Bureau and the 2020 Census.”

An appellate court panel upheld Koh’s order allowing the census to continue through October but struck down the part that suspended the Dec. 31 deadline for turning in apportionment numbers. The panel of three appellate judges said that just because the year-end deadline is impossible to meet doesn’t mean the court should require the Census Bureau to miss it.

With plans for the count hampered by the pandemic, the Census Bureau in April had proposed extending the deadline for finishing the count from the end of July to the end of October and pushing the apportionment deadline from Dec. 31 to next April. The proposal to extend the apportionment deadline passed the Democratic-controlled House, but the Republican-controlled Senate didn’t take up the request. Then, in late July and early August, bureau officials shortened the count schedule by a month so that it would finish at the end of September.

The Republicans’ inaction coincided with a July order from Trump directing the Census Bureau to have the apportionment count exclude people who are in the country illegally. The order was later ruled unlawful by a panel of three district judges in New York, but the Trump administration is appealing that case to the Supreme Court.

Supreme Court halts census in latest twist of 2020 count

HUTCHINSON— Interim Health Officer Karen Hammersmith announced Tuesday that she would be putting through a health order to limit mass gatherings to 100 people, with an exception for businesses that employ more than 100 people and outdoor events where social distancing can be maintained.

Reno County commission chair Ron Sellers implored the community again to wear masks, wash hands and practice social distancing, as did Commissioner Ron Hirst.

July 2, 2020, a statewide Order pertaining to the wearing of masks or other face coverings, which Proclamation and Order have been extended and remain in effect; and

WHEREAS, as of October 12, 2020 there have occurred in Reno County seven (7) confirmed deaths from COVID-19, 1446 positive cases, 321 current active positive cases, 58 total COVID-19 admissions to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center and 29 total admissions to its Intensive Care Unit; and

WHEREAS, in order to reduce the spread of COVID-19, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Reno County Local Health Officer, all recommend implementation of community mitigation strategies to increase containment of the virus, including restricting large gatherings and social distancing in smaller gatherings; and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDERED by the Interim Local Health Officer, pursuant to the above authorities, that:

1. Effective at 12:01 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 14th, 2020 all public or private mass gatherings as defined below, are prohibited within the border of Reno County.

Harold (Harry) Francis Roth, of Overland Park, KS peacefully passed away surrounded by family, from complications of pancreatic cancer Tuesday October 6th, 2020, at the age of 71.&nbsp; 

In addition to an honorable husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend, and role model, Harry was a leading home builder in the Kansas City metropolitan area.&nbsp; He developed his construction skills and work-ethic as a young man on the farm near his hometown of Victoria, KS where he was an exceptional athlete and home-coming king.&nbsp; Following graduation from Fort Hays State University, he relocated to Kansas City, where he met his wife of 43 years and founded his construction business. Harry was a pillar of strength in his community. Harry leaves behind a legacy of honor, quality and craftsmanship with the relationships he nurtured and homes he built. Harold is preceded in death by his parents Cecil J. Roth and Hermina (Minnie) Roth, brother Cecil C. Harold 'Harry' Francis Roth

Beulah Mae Gillespie, 94, passed away Sunday, October 11, 2020 at 
Gove County Long Term Care in Quinter, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born June 28th, 1926 in Orion, Kansas to Joseph Maddox and Myrtle Kreigh Maddox at the family farm.&nbsp;

Beulah graduated from Oakley High School in 1944.&nbsp; She then attended 
Fort Hays State University where she received her teaching certificate.&nbsp;
 She taught school at several different one room country schools in Gove
 County until she married William Dean Gillespie in January of 1951. To 
this union 7 children were born-Kim, Terry, Lyle, Kyle, Diane, Gail, and
 Mark Gillespie.&nbsp;

As a devoted farm wife and mother, she spent her life on the family 
farm.&nbsp; Beulah was very active in the Grainfield United Methodist Church 
all of her life.&nbsp; She was a member of the Grinnell Women’s VFW Auxiliary
 and Big Creek EHU.&nbsp; She was also a member of Eastern Star for many 
years.&nbsp; Beulah enjoyed cooking, gardening, and when she was able, she 
enjoyed traveling.&nbsp; Over the years, she had multiple hip replacements on
 the same hip that never seemed to keep her down, and gave Beulah her 
signature limp. &nbsp;Beulah’s long life enabled her to witness some of the 
most important events of the 20th century including the great
 depression and WWII.&nbsp; These events shaped her worldview and gave her a 
deep appreciation of the really important things in life.

She is survived by her sister, Lois Campbell; youngest son, Mark; 
daughter-in-law, Gloria Gillespie; grandsons Kevin and wife Melissa, and
 Corey and wife Alicia; step-grandsons, Jimmy Griffin and Matthew 
Stranghoner; and 3 great-grandsons, Parker, Canaan, Maxx, and soon to be
 Payton Gillespie.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents Joseph and Myrtle Maddox; 
brothers Raymond, Harold, Donald, and Clyde; and her children Kim, 
Terry, Kyle, Lyle, Diane, and Gail.&nbsp;

Memorial Service will 10:00 a.m. at Schmitt Funeral Home, Quinter, 
Kansas, Friday, October 16, 2020.&nbsp; Burial will be in the Grainfield 
Cemetery.

There will be no visitation as cremation was chosen.&nbsp;

Early Childhood Connections online event to address COVID adversities

Donis Claudene Mitchell 91, passed away on October 9, 2020, in Pawtucket, Rhode Island.  She was born on June 18, 1929, in Scott City, Kansas, and was the eldest daughter of Claude and Thelma Helfrick Hughes.

Donis grew up on the Hughes family farm west of Scott City.  She graduated from Scott Community High School in 1947 and from Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri in 1949.  While a senior in high school, Donis was introduced to Lewis (Mitch) Mitchell at the May Fete, and their courtship began and continued throughout college.  They were married on August 13, 1949, and moved to Lawrence where Mitch completed his final semester at KU and Donis worked at Weavers Department Store.  

Donis and Mitch returned to Scott City to farm and start their family.   They kept very busy with farming and supporting their children’s school and extracurricular activities.  Donis was a great cook but an even better baker.  She made the best pies and cookies, which she shared with her extended family and church community.  Her granddaughter Catie loved to make cakes and cookies with her, and now carries on in her grandmother’s tradition.  Donis always planted a garden and shared her produce with neighbors and friends before canning the rest.  She lived through the depression and learned frugality at a young age.

Donis was a founding and faithful member of the El Quartelejo Study Club, where she enjoyed participating in plays written by Ruby Rodenbeek.  She also was a devoted member of the United Methodist Women, her Circle group, and taught Sunday school for many years.  Donis and Mitch formed a monthly bible study group (“The Group”) with several couples with whom they made and deepened life long friendships.

Donis and Mitch were avid Jayhawk basketball fans.  Over the years they seldom missed watching a game and attended games in Lawrence, Kansas City, and California cheering on their team.  Donis continued to watch KU basketball games after she moved to Rhode Island much to the amusement of her caregivers.

Mitch passed away after 66 years of marriage, and Donis moved to Rhode Island to be near her daughter and son-in-law.  She enjoyed seeing the sites in New England and loved frequent visits from her California family to celebrate holidays and milestone birthdays.  Donis never lost touch with her community back home in Scott City thanks to the many cards and letters sent by her friends and family.  She would read them repeatedly, and always looked forward to the arrival of the Scott County Record and the Methodist church bulletins.

Donis is survived by her three daughters Meredith Mitchell of San Francisco, CA, Melanie, and her husband Stephen Key of Providence, RI, Marci, her husband John Duys of San Anselmo, CA, and her granddaughter Catherine Mitchell Duys of Berkeley, CA.  She is also survived by her sister Connie Posl and husband Charles; her brother Bob Hughes and wife Cheryl; her sisters-in-law Charlene Hughes and Betty Ann Hughes; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

She was preceded by her parents, her husband Mitch, her son Marc, her sister Dee Hoeme and brother-in-law Albert Hoeme, and brothers Harold and Calvin (“Butch”)  Hughes.  

Donis will be laid to rest next to Mitch in a private graveside service in Scott County Cemetery.  

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the United Methodist Church or Camp Lakeside.

Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Friday at Price &amp; Sons Funeral Home in Scott City, Kansas.

While a senior in high school, Donis was introduced to Lewis (Mitch) Mitchell at the May Fete, and their courtship began and continued throughout college. They were married on August 13, 1949, and moved to Lawrence where Mitch completed his final semester at KU and Donis worked at Weavers Department Store. Donis and Mitch returned to Scott City to farm and start their family. They kept very busy with farming and supporting their children’s school and extracurricular activities. Donis was a great cook but an even better baker. She made the best pies and cookies, which she shared with her extended family and church community. Her granddaughter Catie loved to make cakes and cookies with her, and now carries on in her grandmother’s tradition. Donis always planted a garden and shared her produce with neighbors and friends before canning the rest. She lived through the depression and learned frugality at a young age.Donis was a founding and faithful member of the El Quartelejo Study Club, where she enjoyed participating in plays written by Ruby Rodenbeek. She also was a devoted member of the United Methodist Women, her Circle group, and taught Sunday school for many years. Donis and Mitch formed a monthly bible study group (“The Group”) with several couples with whom they made and deepened life long friendships.Donis and Mitch were avid Jayhawk basketball fans. Over the years they seldom missed watching a game and attended games in Lawrence, Kansas City, and California cheering on their team. Donis continued to watch KU basketball games after she moved to Rhode Island much to the amusement of her caregivers.Mitch passed away after 66 years of marriage, and Donis moved to Rhode Island to be near her daughter and son-in-law. She enjoyed seeing the sites in New England and loved frequent visits from her California family to celebrate holidays and milestone birthdays. Donis never lost touch with her community back home in Scott City thanks to the many cards and letters sent by her friends and family. She would read them repeatedly, and always looked forward to the arrival of the Scott County Record and the Methodist church bulletins.Donis is survived by her three daughters Meredith Mitchell of San Francisco, CA, Melanie, and her husband Stephen Key of Providence, RI, Marci, her husband John Duys of San Anselmo, CA, and her granddaughter Catherine Mitchell Duys of Berkeley, CA. She is also survived by her sister Connie Posl and husband Charles; her brother Bob Hughes and wife Cheryl; her sisters-in-law Charlene Hughes and Betty Ann Hughes; and many beloved nieces and nephews.She was preceded by her parents, her husband Mitch, her son Marc, her sister Dee Hoeme and brother-in-law Albert Hoeme, and brothers Harold and Calvin (“Butch”) Hughes. Donis will be laid to rest next to Mitch in a private graveside service in Scott County Cemetery. Kenneth E. Wasinger, age 69, passed away at Ascension Via Christi St.
 Francis Hospital, Wichita on October 12, 2020.&nbsp; He was born on April 
27, 1951 in Ransom, Kansas the son of Nicholas and Wilma (Munch) 
Wasinger, while his father was deployed in Korea.&nbsp; Kenny attended Sacred
 heart School and Ness City High School both in Ness City, Kansas.&nbsp; Upon
 graduation Kenny served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps during the
 Vietnam War.

He was a member of the Sacred Heart Church, Ness City American Legion Frank Stull Post 152 and the Ransom VFW Post 7972.

Upon his return from the military, Kenny attended K-State university 
where he played on the rugby team.&nbsp; Kenny was known by his friends and 
family as K-Dub.&nbsp; Kenny loved the outdoors and worked for local farmers 
during harvest.&nbsp; He spent many winters coyote hunting and was an avid 
sports fan.&nbsp; He worked at the Ness County courthouse as a 
janitor/maintenance man for many years until his retirement earlier this
 year.

Kenny is survived by his mother, Wilma Drake, Ness City; brothers, 
Layne and Alan Wasinger, Ness City; Sisters, Linda Cox (Bob Denning), 
Hanston, Lavonne Mishler (Tom Coker), Hays and Luciann Ogden (John), 
Canon City, Colorado and many nieces and nephews.&nbsp; He was preceded in 
death by his father, Nick Wasinger; brothers, Jim and Verlyn Wasinger; 
nephews, Justin Cox and Tanner Mishler; and great niece, Courie Cox.

Viewing will be held at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City on Wednesday, October 14 from 2:30 until 9:00 p.m.

Shirley Higgins, 86, was presented with a We Kan! Award on October 12 at the City Jail Museum in McCracken. Family and friends were in attendance for the surprise ceremony.&nbsp;

The presentation was made by Marci Penner and WenDee Rowe of the Kansas Sampler Foundation. The Inman-based nonprofit has been choosing 10 recipients a year since 1993 to show appreciation for dedicated work in helping preserve and sustain rural culture. &nbsp; &nbsp;

Higgins’ award had the words “You are my touchstone” engraved on a round plate made by Elk Falls Pottery. Foundation director Penner said, “Shirley exudes love for her hometown and she has always shared her hometown pride or concern with me in a way that touches me deeply.&nbsp; She doesn’t know it but her words, her volunteerism, and her love for her town motivates me to do our work. This was the most personal award we’ve ever given.”&nbsp;

On October 9, the Kansas Sampler Foundation presented a We Kan! Award to McCracken native Tim Rues, 62. Tim is the curator at Constitution Hall in Lecompton. The name of his award was “More than a curator.” The ceremony took place on a porch of the state historic site as friends, families, and dignitaries gathered below in the street.

Penner said, “Tim has been the curator since this state historic site opened in 1995. He greets, he provides interpretation, he educates visitors and students, he performs as a re-enactor, he mows the lawn, and cleans the gutters. He gives this important structure and all that happened here his all and we’re a better state because of his dedication.”

In addition to Higgins and Rues, the other 2020 award presented to date has been to Heather Fuesz of Eureka.&nbsp;

Gilbert Phlieger, 86, died on Saturday, October 10, 2020, at Kearny 
County Hospital in Lakin. He was born on September 1, 1934, at Quinter 
the son of Mike &amp; Rosina (Waldman) Phlieger. He married Joan J. 
Loevenstein on September 2, 1961, at Collyer. She died on July 24, 1983.
 He later married Margaret “Peg” Thayer on May 24, 1986, at Garden City.
 She died on January 24, 2015. 
Gilbert grew up on the family farm near Quinter and graduated from 
Quinter High School in 1952. He served in the United States Army as a 
Medic stationed in Germany from 1958 to 1960 and in the Army Reserves 
from 1960 to 1964. After his discharge he worked for Quinter Co-op 
before going to work as a Salesman for White Farm Equipment in Sedalia, 
Missouri. In 1983 he moved to Versatile Farm Equipment and in 1988 he 
went to Krause Plow and retired from there in 2000. He moved to Garden 
City in 1986 and to Lakin in 2008 while also enjoying spending time at 
his homes in Harlingen, Texas and Cole Camp, Missouri on the Lake of the
 Ozarks. He was a very kind person and enjoyed collecting die cast 
scale tractors as well as watching all types of sports. Gilbert was a 
lifelong Catholic and belonged to St Michael Catholic Church in Collyer 
until 1985, St Dominic Catholic Church in Garden City from 1985 until 
2008 and St Anthony Catholic Church in Lakin after moving there. 
Survivors include his 2 Step-Sons- Mike Thayer of Lakin and Sean Thayer 
of Garden City, Step-Daughter- Nan Thayer Kartsonis of Tucson, Arizona, 2
 Sisters- Annetta Phlieger and Loretta Turner both of Quinter, 6

Economic Impact Payments: Non-Filers can still get one; must act by Nov. 21

Though most Americans − more than 160 million in all − have already received their Economic Impact Payments, the IRS reminds anyone with little or no income who is not required to file a tax return that they may be eligible to receive an Economic Impact Payment.

Available in both English and Spanish, the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.irs.gov/coronavirus/non-filers-enter-payment-info-here">Non-Filers tool</a>&nbsp;on IRS.gov is designed for people with incomes typically below $24,400 for married couples, and $12,200 for singles. This includes couples and individuals who are experiencing homelessness. People must enter their information by Nov. 21 to get a payment this year.

People can qualify for a payment, even if they don't work or have no earned income. But low- and moderate-income workers and working families eligible to receive special tax benefits, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit or Child Tax Credit, cannot use this tool. No fees go to the IRS.</li><li>The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs2goapp">IRS2Go</a>&nbsp;app provides the mobile-friendly payment options, including Direct Pay and Card Payment Providers on mobile devices.</li><li>Taxpayers may also enroll in the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.irs.gov/payments/eftps-the-electronic-federal-tax-payment-system">Electronic Federal Tax Payment System</a>&nbsp;and have a choice of paying online or by phone by using the EFTPS Voice Response System.</li><li>Taxpayers can go to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.irs.gov/payments/view-your-tax-account">IRS.gov/account</a>&nbsp;to securely access information about their federal tax account. They can view the amount they owe, access their tax records online, review their payment history and view key tax return information for the most recent tax return as originally filed.</li>
 </ul><h2>Can't pay full amount?</h2>Several payment options are available on&nbsp;<a href="https://www.irs.gov/payments">IRS.gov/payments</a>&nbsp;to help taxpayers who can't pay in full and some can offer taxpayers smaller penalties. Taxpayers should know:<ul>
 <li>Though interest and late-payment penalties continue to accrue on any unpaid taxes after the original July 15 due date, the failure to pay tax penalty rate is cut in half while an installment agreement is in effect.</li><li>The usual penalty rate of 0.5% per month is reduced to 0.25% per month. For the calendar quarter beginning Oct. 1, 2020, the interest rate for underpayment is 3%.</li>
 </ul><h2>Economic Impact Payments: Non-Filers can still get one; must act by Nov. 21</h2>Though most Americans − more than 160 million in all − have already received their Economic Impact Payments, the IRS reminds anyone with little or no income who is not required to file a tax return that they may be eligible to receive an Economic Impact Payment.Available in both English and Spanish, the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.irs.gov/coronavirus/non-filers-enter-payment-info-here">Non-Filers tool</a>&nbsp;on IRS.gov is designed for people with incomes typically below $24,400 for married couples, and $12,200 for singles. This includes couples and individuals who are experiencing homelessness. People must enter their information by Nov. 21 to get a payment this year.People can qualify for a payment, even if they don't work or have no earned income. But low- and moderate-income workers and working families eligible to receive special tax benefits, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit or Child Tax Credit, cannot use this tool. They will need to file a regular return as soon as possible. The IRS will use their tax return information to determine and issue any EIP for which they are eligible.

Deadline nears for taxpayers who requested tax filing extensions

Raymond Curtis Lofland, 57, of Atwood, died October 7th, 2020, at Swedish
 Medical Center, Englewood, CO. He was born November 7th, 1962, in 
Syracuse, KS to Roy &amp; Betty Lofland. 
Ray graduated from Atwood High School Class of 1981. Throughout his high
 school days he was involved in Pep Club, Band, Drum Trio, Boy’s Glee, 
Choir, Consort “Royal Burgundian” Choir, Pep Band, Marching Band, 
Dixieland Band, Stage Band, Musicals and Kansas Lions Band. He loved the
 drums and had an amazing voice. His senior quote, “Yea though I walk 
through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, because I
 am still trying to figure out what happened the last four years." 
After High School he attended Truck Driving School in Dodge City, KS. He
 drove for various companies through the years including Penske where he
 later became their IT specialist. He taught at a Truck Driving School 
in Denver for a few years. Ray was a Self-Taught Mechanic and a 
Self-Taught IT Specialist. Ray was an Information Sponge! He could learn
 how to do anything just by reading about it. 
Ray returned to Atwood full time in 2002. Upon his return, he started 
his own IT Service, “Barely Wired”. He quickly became the “Go to Guy” 
for all things Technology. 
In 2008, he set up his own system to do the “Bluing” process on choke 
tubes &amp; contracted with Carlson’s to provide them that service. In 
2011 Carlson’s built a building specifically for the Bluing Process and 
Ray moved the equipment over and continued to do the bluing until 2017. 
From 2008-2012, Ray Contracted, as Barely Wired, with Rawlins County USD 
105, as their IT Specialist. After a 4 year leave he returned to the 
school district, as their IT Specialist in 2017 &amp; was still employed
 there when he passed away. 
Ray was very active in the community. He was a member of Lion’s Club 
International from September 2003 – October 2015. He was Club President 
from July 2005-July 2010 and Zone Chairperson from July 2011-July, 2012.
 He received several awards during his time as a member including: 
Membership Key, Membership Advancement Key, Builder Key, Sr. Builder 
Key, 10 Year Monarch Chevron, Master Key &amp; extension Award 1. Ray 
helped Charter the “Hoxie Hottrodders Lion’s Club” in 2012. He was also 
the spearhead for the “Final Fling” Drag Races that are held the 1st 
weekend in October. Ray was an Atwood Ambassador Member for 10 years. He
 was head of Rod Run Registration for the majority of those years he 
spent as an Ambassador. 
He enjoyed working on, rebuilding and riding Motorcycles. He also loved 
to cook, especially Grilling. He had just recently completed his “Cooker
 Trailer”, equipped with 3 smokers, one of which was for Ribs Only. He 
could make a mean brisket and rack of ribs, just ask the teachers! He 
was an amazing person and a great friend. 
He was preceded in death by his parents; Roy &amp; Betty Lofland. 
He is survived by his brother; Ed Lofland (Joyce) of North Dakota; 
nephews, Heath Lofland, of Atwood, Tysen Lofland, of New Mexico, Cody 
Lofland, of Idaho and Larry Lofland (Julie, sons Benjamin &amp; Isaac), 
of Tennessee and many friends. 
Cremation was chosen. Memorial Service will be Monday October 19th at 
4:00 PM at Baalmann Mortuary in Atwood. There will be a Celebration of 
Life at Atwood Country Club following the Memorial Service. Family will 
receive friends at the Celebration of Life. Memorials are suggested to:
