Contestants must be sponsored by a Kansas livestock market. 

Past winners include Charly Cummings (2011 World Champion), Lynn Langvardt, 3-Time World Qualifier, Brian Little (2-time World Reserve), Blaine Lotz (2014 World Champion), Mike Bailey (3-time World Qualifier), Justin Banzhaf, Neil Bouray Qualifier, Russell Sleep, World Runner-up and 2019 World Champion, Ethan Schuette (2018 KAA Champion), and Kyle Layman, Rookie of Year in World Contest 2016.

Contestants are judged with the same criteria used in hiring an auctioneer including: voice quality, chant, clarity, bid catching ability and execution of the auction and buyer/seller relations. A qualified three judge panel will be utilized to determine placings during an actual, live cattle auction. 

Kansas is rich in quality livestock auctioneers as attested by former champions with two world champions and numerous world top qualifiers.

Brandon Hamel, 12th Kansas Competition Winner, will serve as emcee.

Kansas Livestock Auctioneer Championship to be at Russell Livestock

Leroy Fahey Holmes, 78, of Salina, 
passed away Thursday, October 8, 2020.  He was born July 7, 1942, in 
Denver, Colorado, to Darrell and Agnes (Atwell) Holmes. 

 Lee graduated 
from Utica High School and Fort Hays State University.  He worked as a 
teacher and a coach for many, many years.  In his free time he enjoyed 
gardening, woodworking, participating in Salina Senior Games, and 
watching/attending sporting events especially those with his 
grandchildren.


Leroy is survived by his children, Kristi Pike (Sean) of Salina, and 
Reed Holmes (Debi), of Denver; grandchildren, Ivan, Alyssa, Jeffery, 
Nathan, Erica, Brandon, Dustan (Mya), Tyler (Kristi), and Salena; 
great-grandchildren, Dakota, Kaleb, Elizabeth, Charlotte, Marcus, 
Adelynn, Kassandra and Sydney; and numerous nieces and nephews.


He was preceded in death by his wife Janet, of 54 years; his parents; sister Carol and her husband Julian McEwen.


Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. with family present 6-8 p.m. Friday, October 23, at Ryan Mortuary, Salina.


Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 24, 2020 at 
Belmont Boulevard Christian Church, Salina, internment will follow in 
Gypsum Hill Cemetery.

born on January 3, 1930 in Ness County, Kansas the daughter of Paul and 
Mary (Stoecklein) Seib.&nbsp; She married Daniel Snyder on June 22, 1957, in 
Garden City, Kansas. He died on June 23, 2013.

Benita was homemaker with a kind, loving, very gentle spirit and 
profound deep faith that carried her through every day of her life.&nbsp; She
 loved spending time with family and living her faith. She was a 
lifetime member of the Daughters of Isabella of Garden City, Eucharistic
 Minister, Choir member and Altar Society member at the Cathedral of Our
 Lady of Guadalupe in Dodge City. She also assisted in various volunteer
 endeavors including Friendship Feast in Dodge City. &nbsp;In 2020 she moved 
to Brewster, Kansas where she lived with her daughter and son-in-law.

Survivors include 3 sons, Stephen (Nancy) Snyder of Dodge City, 
Daniel (Karen) Snyder of Glendale, AZ, Kenneth Snyder of Anthem, AZ; 3 
daughters, Sharon (Tim) Tompkins of Brewster, Patricia (Anthony) Pieschl
 of Wichita, Karen (Robert) Lindgren of Hutchinson; 8 brothers, Tony, 
Eugene, Paul, Robert, Tom, Vern, Gary and Jerry Seib; 2 sisters, Lorita

Vickie Sue (Bane) Deines

Following a weekend spent with family, including his 
grandchildren, great grandchildren, and his wife of 62 years, Billie, 
Pawnee County native and lifelong Burdett resident John Thompson, 84, 
passed on October 14. Born March 20, 1936, he was the son of John 
“Howard” and Doris “Jean” (Bindley) Thompson.&nbsp;

John was a quintessential Kansas farmer and rancher. When 
his hands weren’t in the soil, he was an active member of the Faith 
Fellowship Church in Hanston. He was committed to his Christian faith, 
actively answering the call by participating in bible studies and 
assisting with children’s ministries. He had a passion for reading, 
history, bicycling, planting, K-State sports and volunteering with the 
Lions Club. John’s numerous bike rides across Kansas, Missouri, South 
Dakota, Oklahoma, Iowa, and Nebraska hinted at his enthusiasm for travel
 and love for meeting new people, which he realized by spending winters 
in Texas and summers in Colorado. Even during his retirement, he found 
ways to give back from replacing window screens and sheet rock to 
painting shutters for community churches.&nbsp;

Survivors include: his wife, Billie Mae (Herndon) Thompson 
of Burdett; a daughter, Robin (Bill) Niederee of Great Bend; a son, 
Marshall Thompson of Burdett; two grandsons, Daniel (Heather) Thompson 
of Hanston and Dillon Thompson of Burdett; a sister, Doris Chipman of 
Denton, Texas; three granddaughters, Katlyn (Jonathan) Rosborough of 
Washington, D.C., Allison Niederee of Los Angeles, Sarah Niederee of 
Buffalo, N.Y.; four great-grandchildren, Wyatt, Will, and Anna-Beth 
Thompson, and James Rosborough.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Dan Thompson.

Pastor Doug Ellison of Faith Fellowship Church in Hanston 
(located 6.5 miles West of Burdett turn North 1/4 Mile) will preside 
over the memorial service at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, October 19. The

KANSAS CITY (AP) — Protesters in Kansas City chained themselves to the doors of a downtown courthouse Thursday and shut down virtual eviction proceedings with online disruptions.

The protest, which drew about 100 people, was organized by the nonprofit group KC Tenants.

Protesters holding signs saying “eviction kills” and “court's closed today” called on Jackson County Judge David Byrn to halt eviction hearings and keep residents in their homes during the coronavirus pandemic and related economic crisis.

The Jackson County Circuit Court temporarily halted evictions this spring, but those resumed this summer. Tenant advocates have been calling for another moratorium amid high unemployment brought on by the pandemic.

KC Tenants and the American Civil Liberties Union sued last month, alleging Byrn's administrative order laying out procedures for eviction cases violated a federal halt of evictions issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The court said in a statement that the judicial branch “does not create laws, statutes or policy,” but rather enforces and follows laws set by executive and legislative branches. It says it is and will remain in compliance with the CDC order.

Paulino “Paul” Amedeo Montoia, age 95, passed away peacefully on October 13, 2020, in Norton, KS.  Paul, one of nine children, was born on September 5, 1925, was to Alfredo and Lucila (Camus) Montoya in Cuba, New Mexico. 

He served in the Armed Forces from 1943-1949, stationed in Denver, Colorado, Korea and Germany.  On his return from Germany to Denver, he came by way of Norton, to see an army buddy, Augie Unrein, and his wife, Anna. It just so happened Anna’s sister, Clemmie, was introduced to Paul on that visit and from then on Paul made visits to Norton until his discharge from the service.  Paul and T. Clementine Robben were united in marriage May 1, 1950, in Norton, where they made their home.  In the early years, he worked for his father-in-law, Clemens Robben, at the Norton Manufacturing Company where they drilled water wells and he also learned welding and metal works.  In 1951, Clemmie and Paul bought a three-room house along Highway 36 as their first home. Eventually they needed more space, so Paul purchased an old farmhouse and he was able to use the lumber making the addition of 2 bedrooms and later a living room and carport.  The addition made room for their growing family totaling four children. 

Paul bought the Phillips 66 gas station, which stood on the corner of Highway 36 and Second St., which also included a small grocery store and a door-to-door Fairmont milk route.  Later, he would build a new service station in its place and eventually sold the business to Leroy (Pete) Peterson.  

In 1958, he built the A &amp; W Drive-In Restaurant on the lot next to their home on Highway 36 which butted up next to their carport. This was operated during the summer months and closed in the winter. It became the first job for a lot of local high school kids and a popular hangout as well. He also was a wholesale distributor for DOB Corporation selling pizza-making supplies to Kansas and Nebraska bars and restaurants. As years passed he built a new home 4 miles west of Norton, removed his original home, and built a new A &amp; W replacing the old one.  He ran the A &amp; W for a total of 20 years where they started selling mugs of root beer for 5 cents and hamburgers for 29 cents which carhops would deliver.  During this time, he purchased the Halbert Propane Service and later renamed it Norton Propane Service.  Paul would later sell that business to Don Ryan.  

Paul partnered with Larry Hull leasing Silvaire Skating Rink building and re-opened it as a 'membership only’ nightclub and renaming it The Club Silvaire.  At that time, it was dress attire only and as Kansas was a dry state at that time, the members had to bring their own bottle of liquor and were issued a punch card with the number of drinks they could have during the evening.  The club had a dining room serving meals of steak dinners, etc., and a dance floor for evening entertainment.  They eventually sold the club to Darlene Strickland who happened to have been a previous customer on his pizza route. 

Later in the 70’s, he would team up with Marvin Pfannenstiel to co-manage the Prairie Dog Golf Course bar and dining.

Among his many endeavors, he owned a backhoe and trenching service in which he dug house basements, septic tanks, sewer lines, gas lines, etc., which he would operate until his failing health wouldn’t allow him to work anymore.  

He was a man of many trades and hard work was something he relished.

In his spare time, he enjoyed going to the casino with his wife and in-laws Augie and Anna Unrein, on the bus and attending polka dances with a regular group of area friends.

Paul was a proud member of the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, 4th Degree KOC, American Legion, Eagles charter member and VFW.

Paul is survived by his wife of 70 years, Clemmie, of their home; sons, Paul, (Leila) Farmington, NM; Thomas, Palco, KS; Ted, (Barbara) St. Louis, MO; and one daughter, Jeanette, (Gary) Lacy, Norton, KS, nine grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren, brother, Robert (Delores) Montoya, and sisters, Minnie Olivas, Juanita Underwood, Dolores, (Bob) Romero, and Dorothy, (Emilio) Romero.  He was predeceased by his parents, two brothers, Louis and Fred Montoya and one sister, Ruth Montoya.  

A memorial has been established (Paul A. Montoia Memorial) and the donations with be shared among St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Norton Amusement Association, and the Norton Senior Center.

Joseph LeRoy “Joe” Klaus, 86, Hays, died Wednesday, October 14, 2020, at HaysMed.

He was born April 14, 1934, in rural 
Ellis County, the son of Alex W. and Adeline (Leiker) Klaus.&nbsp; He was a 
graduate of St. Joseph Military Academy in the class of 1951.&nbsp; From 1953
 until 1955, he served in the United States Army in Korea.&nbsp; On May 28, 
1960, he was united in marriage to Janet Urban at Immaculate Heart of 
Mary Catholic Church in Hays, and they celebrated 60 years of marriage.&nbsp;


 Joe was a systems technician for Southwestern Bell for 32 years, 
retired from AT&amp;T in 1987, and owned and operated Joe’s Telephone 
Service for 15 years.&nbsp; He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary 
Catholic Church, St. Mary’s Third Degree Knights of Columbus Council 
#6984, Hays VFW Post #9076 where he was past Post Commander, and a 
longtime member of the VFW Honor Guard.&nbsp; He enjoyed his bowling league, 
tending to his yard and garden, watching western movies, his coffee 
group, and volunteering at the VFW.&nbsp; Most of all, he was a proud grandpa
 who loved his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife Janet, of 
the home in Hays, two sons: Bill Klaus and wife Brenda and Bob Klaus and
 wife Tammy, all of Hays, three daughters: Karen Cederberg and husband 
Jim of Centennial, CO, Sharon Basinger of Centennial, CO, and Debbie 
Nunnelee and husband Cal of Highlands Ranch, CO, two sisters: Lillian 
Schlyer of Hays and Violet Mermis of Salina, 18 grandchildren, and 10 
great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his 
parents, his father and mother-in-law: Ed and Ella Urban, a daughter: 
Mary Grizzle, a granddaughter: Samantha Mader, a brother: Walter Klaus, 
and two sisters: Ruby Binder and Velma Pfannenstiel.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 
10:00 am on Monday, October 19, 2020, at Immaculate Heart of Mary 
Catholic Church, with Fr. Nick Parker officiating.&nbsp; Burial with military
 honors by the Hays VFW Post #9076 Honor Guard will follow in St. Joseph
 Cemetery. &nbsp;Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 8:00 on Sunday and 
from 9:00 am until 9:45 on Monday, all at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral 
Home.&nbsp; A Daughters of Isabella rosary will be at 5:30 pm, a vigil 
service will be at 6:30 pm, followed by a Knights of Columbus Rosary,

Jennifer
 Kay Maneth, age 62, loving mother, grandmother, sister and aunt, left 
her family to gain her eternal wings on Tuesday, October 13th, 2020, at 
Diversicare of Council Grove.

Jennifer
 was born May 4, 1958 to William (Bill) &amp; Kay (Dorfshaffer) Maneth. 
She was a long time resident of Great Bend, Kansas and graduated from 
Great Bend High School in 1976. Jennifer worked at Marmie Motors in 
Great Bend as a bookkeeper. In August of 1981, she had her only child, 
Samantha (Maneth) Asebedo. On and off over the years she took college 
classes at Barton County Community College. She enjoyed the art classes,
 falling in love with oil painting and ceramics. In 1999 she moved to 
Denver, Colorado, working at several different places. She moved back to
 Kansas in 2007, to Council Grove, for the birth of her first 
grandchild. Of all of the things she loved most; it was her family and 
animals.

Jennifer
 was preceded in death by her father, William F. Maneth; a 
granddaughter, Odella Asebedo; and both sets of grandparents. She is 
survived by her mother, Kay E. (Dorshaffer) Maneth of Great Bend; a 
daughter, Samanatha J. (Matthew) Asebedo of Wilsey; grandchildren, 
Isabella &amp; Noah Asebedo of Wilsey; and her 2 brothers, John (Sandra)
 Maneth of Great Bend, and David (Angela) Maneth of Wichita.

Cremation
 has taken place, family visitation will be held Saturday, October 24, 
2020, from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. The 
family requests that those in attendance wear bright colors. There will 
be a private family burial. The family suggests memorials be made to the
 Golden Belt Humane Society, as Jennifer loved animals, in care of 
Bryant Funeral Home, 1425 Patton Rd., Great Bend, Ks 67530.

The document was recommended to the group by the MIAA COVID-19 Task Force and awaits review and consideration by the CEO Council during the next two weeks. MIAA announces basketball schedule format, spring competition start dates for soccer, volleyball

Late October to early November is the most effective time to control broadleaf weeds in lawns. Dandelions usually produce a flush of new plants in late September, and the winter annual weeds henbit and chickweed should have germinated in October.

These young plants are small and easily controlled with herbicides such as 2,4-D or combination products (Trimec, Weed-B-Gon, Weed-Out) that contain 2,4-D, MCPP, and Dicamba. Even established dandelions are more easily controlled now than in the spring because they are actively moving materials from the top portion of the plant to the roots in the fall. &nbsp;Herbicides will translocate to the roots as well and will kill the plant from the roots up.​

Choose a day that is 50 degrees or higher. The better the weed is growing, the more weed killer will be moved from the leaves to the roots. Cold temperatures will slow this process, but these products will still work at lower temperatures.

Weed Free Zone (also sold under the name of Speed Zone) contains the three active ingredients mentioned above, plus carfentrazone. It will give a quicker response than the other products mentioned especially as temperatures move below 50 degrees. Richard E. Henderson, age 79, died Monday, October 5, 2020, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born October 2, 1941, in Norton, Kansas, to Wallace Alfred and Helen Margaret (Kent) Henderson.&nbsp; He married Waunita (Thiele) on August 12, 1967, at Norton, Kansas.

He was a Math/Science/Latin high school teacher for 15 years.&nbsp; He taught in Victoria, Klamath Falls, Oregon, and his remaining years at Grainfield, where he started their wrestling program.&nbsp; He was an insurance agent with American Family Insurance for 18 years in Oakley and Hays.&nbsp; He was a courier with Henry Industries for a few years, a&nbsp; notary republic, and pasted president of the Central Plains ARC in Hays.&nbsp; He grew up in Norton, and was a 1959 graduate of Norton High School , and a 1964 graduate of Fort Hays State College.&nbsp; He started his work ethic early in life delivering the Norton Daily Telegram and The Omaha World Herald.&nbsp; Richard was a non-fiction reader, and an independent thinker. &nbsp; He enjoyed the Big 12 sports, gardening, and his two Shih-Tzu, Misty and Mandy.

Survivors include his wife, Waunita Henderson, and his daughter, Andrea Henderson, both of the home; three sons, Matthew Henderson and Sara Bressan, Prairie Village, KS; Kyle Henderson, Dallas TX; Jeremiah Henderson, Hays, KS; one brother, John Henderson and wife, Betty, Topeka, KS; one sister, Geraldine Dunning and husband, Earl, Arlington, TX; many nieces and nephews. &nbsp;

Francis “Frankie” Braun, 85, rural Hays, died Wednesday, October 14, 2020, at Via Christi Village.

He was born March 1, 1935, on the family
 farm west of Victoria, the son of Frank J. and Helen M. (Brungardt) 
Braun.&nbsp; He was a graduate of Hays High School in the class of 1953 and 
was a United States Army veteran.&nbsp; On May 19, 1962, he was united in 
marriage to Jacquelyn “Jacky” Zimmerman at St. Anthony Catholic Church 
in Schoenchen, and they celebrated 58 years of marriage.&nbsp; He was a 
farmer and stockman, and loved his work.&nbsp; His memberships included 
Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, the Schoenchen St. Anthony 
Knights of Columbus Council #4166, Kansas Livestock Association, and the
 American Simmental Association.&nbsp; He enjoyed playing baseball, bowling, 
and the Kansas City Royals.&nbsp; He loved raising his cattle, farming, and 
horses.&nbsp; His faith and his family were of utmost importance to him, and 
he loved spending time with his grandchildren.&nbsp;

Survivors include his wife Jacky, of 
the home in rural Hays, a son: Shawn Braun of Victoria, a daughter: 
Simone Werth and husband Mark of Hays, two sisters: LaVerna Younger and 
Helen Werth, both of Hays, four grandchildren: Cameron Werth and wife 
Jennifer of Topeka, Leighton Werth and wife Jodie of Hays, Nathan Braun 
and fiancé Kilie Unrein of Victoria, and Breanna Braun of Phoenix, AZ, 
five great grandchildren: Aiden, Liam, Jack, Carter, and Wyatt Werth, 
and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers: Marvin and Robert “Bobby” Braun.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 
10:00 am on Saturday, October 17, 2020, at Immaculate Heart of Mary 
Catholic Church, with Fr. Nick Parker officiating.&nbsp; Private family 
burial with military honors by the Hays VFW Post #9076 Honor Guard will 
be in St. Anthony Cemetery in Schoenchen.&nbsp; Visitation will be from 9:00 
am until 10:00 on Saturday at the church.&nbsp; The family is requesting that
 attendees wear masks and practice social distancing for the public 
services.&nbsp;

Lucille Quinby, age 75, of Ellis, Kansas, died Thursday, October 8, 2020, at the Good Samaritan Society of Hays.&nbsp; She was born March 11, 1945, in Ellis, Kansas, to Celestine J. and Jeanne M. (Ingram) Weaver.

&nbsp;She was a cook at the family business, the Skelly Restaurant in Ellis.&nbsp; She also cooked at the Alloway’s Restaurant and retired in 2009. &nbsp; She grew up in Ellis and was a graduate of Ellis High School.&nbsp; She attended the Ellis Baptist Church, she enjoyed Elvis music, game shows, and her grandchildren.

Survivors include one son, Matthew Quinby and his wife, Tamara, Hays, KS; one daughter, Sarita Smith, Ellis, KS; two sisters, Elizabeth Pinney, Hays, KS; Marge Weber, Boone, IA; two sisters-in-law, Kay Weaver, Hays, KS; Roxanna Weaver, Sheridan WY; and eight grandchildren, Cassandra Quinby, Blade Quinby, Mataya Quinby, Haven Quinby, Shaylee Smith, Kalen Smith, Korvin Smith and Shyla Smith.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Richard Weaver, Leroy Weaver; one sister, Evelyn Wickham; one infant brother, Paul Weaver; one infant sister, Agatha Weaver.

Graveside services will be at noon Saturday, October 24, 2020, at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Ellis, Kansas. &nbsp;

Daniel “Dan” McKay, 69, passed away October 13, 2020, at the 
University Of Kansas Health System - Great Bend Campus. He was born on 
September 8, 1951, at Meade, to David J. &amp; Mary (Clowers) McKay. He 
married Angie Caudill on December 19, 2011, at LaCrosse.&nbsp;

Coming from LaCrosse in 2013, Dan was a Great Bend resident. He was a
 civil engineer. He graduated with honors and enjoyed watching K-State 
play, as well as professional football. He especially loved spending 
time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include, his wife, Angie of the home; three sons, Reese 
McKay and wife Emily of Texas, Baxter McKay of Topeka, and Joshua 
Caudill of Hope; a daughter, Stephanie Krom and husband Joshua of Great 
Bend; his father, David J. McKay; a brother, David L. McKay and wife 
Cheryl; a sister in law, Tracey McKay of Wichita; and nine 
grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary McKay; and a
 brother, Kevin McKay.&nbsp;

Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Monday, October 19, 
2020, at Bryant Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will be held at 
10:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 20, 2020, at Bryant Funeral Home. Memorials
