SEDGWICK COUNTY —A retired firefighter unhappy with the city of Wichita's mask mandate who was arrested Friday for threatening to kidnap and kill the mayor made his first court appearance Tuesday.

Meredith Dowty, 59, Wichita, was charged with three counts of criminal threat, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

Wichita Mayor Brandon Whipple said he had been read text messages received by another city official that asked about the mayor’s address and threatened his life.

The mayor says the suspect talked about tyranny in the messages and was upset about the mask mandates and not being able to see his mother because of COVID-19 restrictions on elderly homes.

In Kansas, criminal threat is a level 9 felony which means, depending on his criminal record, it’s possible Mr. Dowty could receive anywhere from probation to 17 months in prison on each count, if he’s convicted, according to the district attorney.

He <a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=18723930">remains jailed on a $50,000 bond </a>and is scheduled to return to court November 5.

Man charged, remains jailed for threatening mayor over masks 

The Fort Hays State University American Democracy Project provides numerous civic and political engagement activities that challenge and encourage students, faculty, staff, and community members to find their place and make a difference. FHSU ADP to host civil discourse event October 27

Peggy Joan Culver, 84, died on Monday, October 12, 2020 at Lane County 
Hospital in Dighton. She was born on July 3, 1936 at Shields the 
daughter of Melvin A. Reed &amp; Estella (Toots) Torson. She married 
Jerry Culver on October 15, 1955 at Dighton. 
Peggy graduated from Dighton High School in 1954 and then Cosmetology 
School in Wichita. She started working for Blanche McKelvey before 
moving to Liberal for a short time, then opened Nu-Charm Beauty Salon in
 Dighton in 1960. In 1969 she moved to Fairbanks, Alaska for 47 years 
where she had two beauty salons and also operated a beauty school. She 
had served on the State Boards of Cosmetology in both Kansas and Alaska.
 She had volunteered in Alaska by flying to the Nome and Bristol Bay 
areas, taking a dog sled to villages and doing hair for the native 
women, at times getting paid with fish. She enjoyed bowling, ceramics, 
playing cards, her family activities and cooking Elephant Ears for 
family and guests. She moved back to Kansas in 2016 and lived in 
Cimarron for a short time before returning to Dighton. She was a member
 of the First Christian Church in Dighton. 
Peggy touched a lot of heads and hearts, she will forever be remembered and missed. 
She is survived by her Husband- Jerry Culver of Dighton, 2 Sons- Donald 
“Buster” Culver of Fairbanks, Alaska and Kirk and Diana Culver of 
Dighton, 2 Sisters- Patsy Redburn of Dighton and Nancy Martin of Monet,

Doris L. Riner, age 98, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 19, 2020, at the Scott County Hospital in Scott City, Kansas.  She was born on September 26, 1922, in Comanche County, Kansas, the daughter of John &amp; Minnie Sinkle Wait.  A resident of Scott City, Kansas since 1953 moving from Protection, Kansas, she was a homemaker.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Scott City, Kansas.

On May 3, 1942, she married G.T. Riner in Protection, Kansas.  He passed away on July 26, 2011, in Scott City, Kansas.

Survivors include her Two Sons - Ronald &amp; Sue Riner of Scott City, Kansas, Bill &amp; Sue Riner of Scott City, Kansas, Three Daughters - Roma &amp; Joe Murphy of Great Bend, Kansas, Trudy &amp; Don Eikenberry of Scott City, Kansas, Connie &amp; Kevin Wilkinson of Goodyear, Arizona, One Brother - Merle Wait of Protection, Kansas, Fifteen Grandchildren, Thirty-Five Great Grandchildren, and Eight Great Great Grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her Parents, Husband, Two Sisters - Maxine Huck, Ruth Smitherman, and Two Brothers - John Wait Jr, and Donald Wait.

Ramona L. Stukey, 91, passed away October 20, 2020, at Woodhaven Care
 Center, Ellinwood. She was born on July 13, 1929, at Hoisington, to Ed 
and Catherine (Theisen) Seyfert. She married Morris E. Stukey April 18, 
1948 at Hoisington, Kansas.&nbsp; He died March 14, 2008.

A lifetime Great Bend resident, Ramona was a paraprofessional for USD
 428, having also worked at Dairy Queen and Coast to Coast. She was a 
member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church and the 
Altar Society. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, embroidery, camping, 
boating, and puzzles. She especially loved to spend time with her 
family.

Survivors include, two sons, Morris L. Stukey and wife Joyce, and 
Larry Stukey and wife Linda, and a daughter, Brenda Petersilie and 
husband Dale, all of Great Bend; a brother, Harlen Seyfert of Glendale, 
Ariz.; seven grandchildren; and fourteen great grandchildren. She was 
preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Morris E. Stukey; a 
brother, Norbeith Seyfert; and a sister, Calista Stuart.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Thursday,

She was born June 20, 1961, in Mississippi; the daughter of William

 moving from Great Bend, she was a Certified Nurses Aide.

Survivors include; four sons, Daniel Etim, Atchison, Richard Etim, 
Larned, Joseph Wedgeworth, Atchison, Jared Wedgeworth, Atchison; a 
daughter, Cayleigh Brassfield, Bogue; a brother, Bill Wedgeworth, 
Mississippi and thirteen grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Matthew Rein Driscoll passed away Saturday, October 17, 2020. He was born January 29, 1978, in Salina, KS and was the oldest of four boys.

Matt attended Elementary, Middle &amp; High School in Russell, KS graduating in 1997. He was always active in school and community affairs, an Honor student and an Eagle Scout.

He attended the University of Kansas. While at KU he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He graduated from the University of Kansas in 2001. He was a lifetime member of the University of Kansas Alumni Association. After graduation he traveled to New York City and was employed by Sotheby’s. He enjoyed his work with them appraising, valuing and selling antiques and works of art. After the events of 9/11/01 he wanted to move closer to Kansas. He was employed with J.P. Morgan in Kansas City for a few years. He subsequently decided he wanted something different. He enrolled and graduated from Le Cordon Bleu culinary institute in Scottsdale, AZ. After receiving his degree he was employed as a chef in various restaurants from Alaska to the Mid-West. He was affiliated with and instructor at NCK Technical College in Hays, KS. He was also employed with Driscoll Law Office and a member of the Russell City Council.

Survivors are his partner Dustin Poche; parents: Jerry &amp; Patty Driscoll; brothers: Brody (Courtney) Driscoll; Casey (Kayla) Driscoll; Ryan (Alex) Driscoll; nephew: Chase Driscoll; nieces: Vayda, Maycie and Savanna Driscoll. He also left numerous other relatives and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents Richard and Colette Driscoll and Alvin and Lillian Rein.

A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, October 23, 2020, at St. Mary’s Queen of Angles Catholic Church in Russell, Kansas.  Visitation will be from 9 A.M. to 5 P.M. on Thursday, October 22, 2020, at the mortuary.  A parish vigil and rosary will be held at 7:00 P.M. Thursday, October 22, 2020, at the church. Norton resident Veryl Dale Nyland, son of Henry and Edith (Penning) 
Nyland was born November 15, 1928, near Calvert, KS and passed away on 
October 18, 2020, at the Andbe Home, Norton, KS at the age of 91.

Veryl lived most of his life in the Norton area and worked for the Kansas Department of Transportation until retirement.

He is survived by three daughters Lois Peters and husband Alan of 
Inman, KS, Joyce Rogers and husband Jack of Long Island, KS and Karen 
Smith and husband Bob of Norton, KS; 11 grandchildren; 36 great 
grandchildren; and 11 great great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Margarette; daughter 
Marjorie Lambert; great grandson Dusty Layne Yocum; brothers Wayne, 
Warren and Alfred who died in infancy; and a son-in-law LeRoy Lambert.

Cremation was chosen. Private family inurnment will take place at Norton Cemetery, Norton, KS at a later date.

October 18, 2020, at the Andbe Home, Norton, KS at the age of 91.Veryl lived most of his life in the Norton area and worked for the Kansas Department of Transportation until retirement.He is survived by three daughters Lois Peters and husband Alan of 
Inman, KS, Joyce Rogers and husband Jack of Long Island, KS and Karen 
Smith and husband Bob of Norton, KS; 11 grandchildren; 36 great 
grandchildren; and 11 great great grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Margarette; daughter 
Marjorie Lambert; great grandson Dusty Layne Yocum; brothers Wayne, 
Warren and Alfred who died in infancy; and a son-in-law LeRoy Lambert.Cremation was chosen. Joseph “Joey” McFee, 22, of Atwood, died Saturday, October 17, 2020. He 
was born April 28, 1998, to Timothy and Hope (Indermuhle) McFee. 
Joey was always very busy. He was introduced to the wrestling room at 3 
years old where he would watch practice since his dad was coaching, 
which lead to being there for the Kids Club practices. Joey was never 
big, he wrestled 58# for three years in a row. But he was quick and 
scrappy. He went to the kid’s state tournament in Topeka several times, 
and placed at high school state 2 of his 3 times qualifying. He wrestled
 all over Kansas, into Colorado and Nebraska. This even took him to 
Australia to the Down Under Wrestling international event where he 
placed 5th. 
When Joey wasn’t wrestling, he was at scouts. He started scouts as soon 
as he could. He liked to learn, everything was interesting and scouts is
 a try it and learn it kind of deal. He could cook, as long as it was 
outside, and tie about any knot and set up almost every kind of tent. 
Joey worked on badges just to try new stuff. 
Joey was in the Camp Hansen Leadership group “The Tribe of Golden Eagle”
 and also in the Order of the Arrow, Boy Scouts National Honor Society. 
 With his scouting he traveled to West Virginia to the National Scouting
 Jamboree, and also to Michigan for NOAC, (National Order of the Arrow 
Conference). The Lake Chapel was his Eagle Scout project that he 
designed and built with help of friends, Scouts, and family. This summer
 alone since July, there have been 4 weddings at his Chapel. 
Joey spent many years at Camp Hansen as both a scout and camp counselor.
 Even after he was out of school, he was still known to show up to camp 
and help where he could, it was his second home. 
Joey was adventurous in everything he did, He was praised by many for 
bringing “BUD” the school mascot back to life, this also allowed him to 
travel with the cheerleading squad as a bonus! When he wasn’t bud for 
the cheer squad, he was the volleyball manager and traveled with the 
volleyball team. Joey was in the Consort Show choir also, he always felt
 he was a “white boy and can’t dance”, but he sure put on a good show. 
Joey tried about everything, Gymnastics, baseball, 4H, swimming (he 
really didn’t like the water), he rode a unicycle, was in band, did some
 trapping, tried playing banjo and ukulele. 
Since graduation in 2016, Joey has continued to be busy and adventurous 
in his travels. He spent about 2 years off and on hitch hiking where 
ever he decided to go. He made it to Flagler Colorado once, only to 
hitch a ride with someone all the way to Tennessee, where he knew a good
 friend from Scouts. Those scouting skills came in handy on these hitch 
hiking adventures. 
Joeys work experience was about as mixed. He helped a farmer or 2, 
worked at Casey’s, did construction, lawn irrigation, worked at both 
SureFire Electronics and SureFire Ag, he had a job inspecting telephone 
poles along Nebraska highways and many other things that came up that 
seemed interesting to him at the time. His last work adventure was as a 
bartender at Legends, in Atwood. 
Joey would tell you he wasn’t a people person, but I don’t know why. He 
liked to talk with everyone. He did have his opinions and shared them 
openly and bluntly, but he was like that old guy who wanted to share 
stories. 
For what Joey was not in size, his heart was so much bigger. Family and 
friends were important. His helping hands were there, for whatever it 
was. 
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Rod and Marge McFee, Debi Mills, and Ward Mills. 
He is survived by his parents, Tim McFee and Hope McFee, of Atwood; 
sisters, Dalyn McFee and Kaleigh McFee and brother Tommy McFee, all of 
Atwood; grandma Fawna McFee; grandpa Mike Indermuhle and many aunts, 
uncles, cousins and friends. 
Funeral Service is 2:00 p.m. Thursday, October 22, 2020 at the Chapel at

Joseph Rodney 'Joey' McFee

Mary Frances Krahl, 91, was born into her earthly life on February 20, 1929, and was born into eternal life on October 18, 2020, at her home surrounded by her family. 

Frances was born to Gilbert and Edith (Coupal) Thyfault on the family farm near Zurich, Kansas. In 1939, her family moved to Alton, KS where her parents ran what Frances called the 1st convenient store/gas station/garage/restaurant in America. Her favorite memory was during World War II, she would scoop up free ice cream cones for convoys of soldiers. In Alton, Frances met the love of her life, Zane Krahl. They were the classic love story of the cheerleader and the football player. Frances and Zane were married on her 21st birthday at St. Thomas Church in Stockton, KS. They ran a meat locker in Damar, KS and then moved to Salina, KS where their first child, Julie Ann was born. In 1955, they moved to Hays, KS where their other children were born; Rodney, Becky, Todd and Jeff. Frances was a stay-at-home mom as she never had a driver's license. She cooked everything from scratch, sewed all the girls clothes, gave everyone haircuts and ordered shoes by placing her kids feet on the foot measuring page in the Sears catalog.

In 1968, the family moved to Salina in which living a half lock from St. Mary's Church and Sacred Heart High School, Frances walked over to volunteer hundreds of hours. She was head Sacristian at St. Mary's for 16 years where she decorated the church for holidays and got the altar ready for daily mass. She repeated this process many years at Sacred Heart Jr/Sr High School. Frances had a rosary collection she displayed for Sr. Pauline's 7th grade class who walked over to her house for many Octobers who then left with handfuls of candy. Frances was an awesome cook specializing in casseroles, cookies, tea rings, caramel popcorn and fried chicken and gravy. In her spare time, she hand stitched quilts for each child, grandchild, great-grandchildren with spares to distribute as they continue to arrive in the future. Frances loved to travel and was fortunate to make countless trips with Zane in their 1931 Model A pickup touring across Kansas and the United States with the Midway Antique Auto Club of Salina and the Wichita A's Model A Ford Club where they met remarkable people and made wonderful memories. She also took orders, wrapped and shipped parts for Zane's Antique Cars and Parts with Zane for 27 years.

Frances was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Zane, her parents, brothers Donnie Thyfault, John and his wife Lois Thyfault, and sister Dorothy and her husband Doyal Hrabe. She is survived by her sister, Jane and husband Don Cunningham, Stockton, KS.; her children and their spouses: Sr. Julie Ann, C.S.A., Fond du Lac, WI; Rodney, Solomon, KS; Becky of the home; Todd and Sherry Krahl, Salina and Jeff and Lynda Krahl, Galva, KS.; her grandchildren and their spouses: Devin and Carissa Krahl, Blue Springs MO.; Kylie and Dustin Pestinger, Salina, KS., Taylor and Clancy Krahl, Salina, KS.; and Paige Brown of Solomon, KS.; her great grandchildren, Korey Pestinger; Kaidan and Ava Brown. Step grandchildren and great grandchildren Jennifer and Chris Kyle, Chase, Kennedi &amp; Zoe, Moundridge, KS., Chelsea and Austin Baker, Allie, Reed and Madelyn, McPherson, KS., and Cory and Katy Potter, McPherson, KS.

Mary Frances Krahl

Beverly Diane Gilliland Clulow of Topeka passed away Thursday October 8, 2020 in Carbondale, Kansas. She was 88 years old.

Diane was born February 23, 1932 in Agra, Kansas to Edwin James and 
Florence Faye (Dixon) Gilliland. She graduated from Phillipsburg HS in 
1950 and later went on to graduate from Draughans School of Business in 
Tulsa, OK in 1965. Opportunities took her and her small family from 
Tulsa to San Antonio, TX before relocating to Topeka, where she worked 
and later retired from the Menninger Foundation in 1994.

Both daughters Julia and Cynthia were able to spend the last few days of her life with their mother.

She is survived by her daughters and their husbands; Julia &amp; 
Robert Frost of Gilbert, AZ, and Cynthia &amp; Wade Savage of Bountiful,
 UT; along with eight grandchildren and their spouses (Adam &amp; 
Karlee, David &amp; Kelsey, R. Matthew &amp; Millie, Crystal, Ariel, 
Alisha &amp; Ryan, Joshua &amp; Becca, Carrissa &amp; Nick) and ten 
great-grandchildren (Michael, Lucas, Jacob, Evelyn, and Denae; Caden, 
Tessa, and Zack, Becky, Katie).

Also surviving are sisters Roberta Lane of Larned, KS and Mary Anderson of Kennesaw, GA.

Besides her parents, preceding her in passing are her siblings Jeanne
 Marcher, Jim, Foster, David, Margaret Stockton, and Nancy Thixton.

Diane was extremely gifted in the art of embroidery and was involved 
in doing family genealogical research. One of her favorite things was to
 go for a Sunday drive to be out in nature or to walk through a garden. 
She was very knowledgeable about plants and flowers. Diane loved the 
English language and both studied and continued to research words and 
the use of them. In her earlier adult years, she sang with the Boston 
Avenue Methodist Church chancel choir in Tulsa, OK, including their work
 with the Tulsa Symphony. Along with the rest of the Gilliland family, 
she loved the singing of the Doxology, in all its many parts and 
harmony. A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 
she enjoyed having spiritual discussions. Diane loved her family deeply.

A private family burial was held on Friday, October 16, 2020 in the Agra Cemetery, Agra, Kansas.

James William Simon

Douglas John Mick passed away on October 18, 2020 at the KU Medical 
Center in Kansas City, MO, at the age of 65. He was born on August 26, 
1955 to Herman and Lenora (Adam) Mick in Plainville, Kansas. 
 Douglas was born and raised in Rooks County. He attended Palco High 
School and graduated with the Class of 1973. Following high school, he 
attended Fort Hays State University and graduated in 1977 with honors. 
He was extremely intelligent and worked as an accountant out of college 
until he changed career paths and worked in the oil field for a couple 
years before returning back to the family farm. He found joy in the 
simplest things in life including caring for the farm and being with his
 family.
 Left to cherish his memory are his siblings, Dianne Durfee of 
Wallace, NE, Rose (Don) Storment of Miami, OK, Kathy (Bill) Fabac of 
Weston, MO, Jim (Paula) Mick of Plainville, and Dennis (Susan) Mick of 
Plainville; and many nieces and nephews.
 He is preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Lenora Mick and a brother-in-law, Don Durfee.
 A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, October 24,

Roy Alan Hustead, age 73, of Hays, Kansas died Saturday, October 17, 2020, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born March 1, 1947, in Breckenridge, Texas to Roy F. and Doris (McKinney) Hustead.&nbsp; He married Carol J. (Koerner) Myers on May 24, 1975, at Hays, Kansas.

He was a production foreman with Phillips Petroleum for 30 years and a Safety Coordinator with Murfin Drilling for five years.&nbsp; He retired and moved to Hays in 2012 after having lived in Anadarko, OK; Morgantown, WV; Bowie, TX; Kilgore, TX; Odessa, TX; and Hobbs, NM. &nbsp; He grew up in Shidler, Oklahoma, he was a 1965 graduate of Shidler High School and a graduate of Oklahoma State University.&nbsp; He was a veteran of the US Army Air Force, and served from 1969 to 1975.&nbsp; He was a member of Our Lady Help of Christian Catholic Church, Antonino, and a church lector.&nbsp; He was a board member of High Plains Mental Health, and did radio ads for High Plains Mental Health.&nbsp;

He also did radio ads for the Catholic radio station.&nbsp; He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his wife, Carol Hustead, of the home; children, Lee Allen Myers and wife, Ingrid, Bridgeport, TX; Gina (Myers) Shultz and husband, Jeff, Midland, TX; one sister, Cindy Finley, Oklahoma City, OK; one brother-in-law, Bruce Otzmann, Phoenix, AZ; six grandchildren, Lance Myers (Hannah); Brandan Myers; McKynlee Shultz; Holli Olmos (Jesse); Nicholas Kleeb (Casey); Jackson Kleeb; three great grandchildren, Adric Olmos, Dylan Myers and Sadie Myers.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Terri Otzmann.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, October 24, 2020, at Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church, Antonino, Kansas.&nbsp; Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays, Kansas with military honors by the Hays V.F.W. Post #9076.

Virtual Lunch & Learn 'Rightfully Hers' with Eisenhower Library and Museum

Mary Ardis Proberts, died October 14, 2020. Born January 7, 1953, in 
Kinsley, Kansas, she was the daughter of John D. and Ardis F. 
Countryman.

Mary proudly raised and is survived by four sons: Darin (Teresa) 
Proberts, Jeremiah (Denise) Proberts, Nickolaus Proberts, and Kevin 
(Trina) Proberts; and a daughter Michelle (Robert) Swinney. She 
cherished her twelve grandchildren: Brandon, Sarah, Megan, Caleb, 
Andrew, Luke, Katelyn, Courtney (deceased), Sheldon, Toby, Joleigh and 
Charlie; one great-granddaughter Olivia; and her dog, Taco.

Mary was loved by all who knew her and was happiest when hosting a 
family reunion or one of her many parties at her home. She was a 
life-long singer and musician performing with her brothers and many 
friends over the years. Many people in Kinsley know her from her years 
of running a daycare. She worked at the Offerle Country store and served
 as a home health aide; however, she was most proud of her role as a 
Certified Medication Aide at Brookdale Senior Living Center for the past
 24 years.

She is survived by John “Wayne” &amp; Cheryl Countryman of Manhattan,
 KS., Earl “David” Countryman of Emporia, KS., Robert “Bobby” and 
Patricia Countryman of Wichita, KS., Julia and Dan Hohn of Nixa, MO., 
Kathy Countryman of Rock Springs, WY. and Virgil and Kathy Countryman of
 Emporia, KS.

She was proceded in death by her parents, Five brothers James (Jimmy)
 Countryman, Arthur “Freddy” Countryman, Harold “Gene” Countryman, 
Samuel “Sammy” Countryman, Charles “Eddie” Countryman, and sister Elsie 
Arb.

A memorial service will be held at the Hillside Cemetery in Kinsley at 11 AM, Monday, October 19th. The public is invited.

Donna Mearl Marcellus, 81, died October 17, 2020, at Locust Grove 
Village, La Crosse, Kansas. She was born September 9, 1939, in Great 
Bend, Kansas, the daughter of Arthur Joseph and Edna Lucille (Barnes) 
Dyer. Donna graduated from Hoisington High School in 1957. She later 
graduated from Barton Community College in 1977.

A lifetime Hoisington resident, Donna was a Registered Nurse. She 
worked for Clara Barton Hospital and Central Kansas Medical Center 
retiring in 2000. Donna was a member of Hoisington Bible Church. Donna 
enjoyed spending time in her flower garden with her husband Bill, and 
the joy that it would bring to others as they drove by their house on 
Main Street. She loved spending time with her family especially her 
grandchildren and great grandchildren.

On December 17, 1977, she married William Jacob “Bill” Marcellus in Hoisington. Bill preceded her in death on November 29, 2019.

Survivors include; three daughters, Donita Donovan and husband Darrel
 of Hoisington, Veronica Ludwig of Olmitz, and Florina Burns and husband
 Daniel of Puebla, Mexico; brothers, Ernie Dyer and wife Jan of 
Lawrence, Ed Dyer and wife Nan of Moore, Oklahoma; sisters, Marie 
Johnson and husband Perry of Wellington, Colorado, Cozetta Muth and 
husband Steve of Ridgedale, Missouri; six grandchildren, Justin Ludwig, 
Shawn Ludwig and wife Hannah, Dylan Donovan and wife Andrea, Devan Hall 
and husband Andrew, Azrielle Burns and Avianna Burns; five great 
grandchildren, Aria Donovan, Greyson Donovan, Wrynleigh Donovan, and 
Lincoln Donovan, Molly Ludwig, and Courtney Ludwig.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son-in-law, Bob Ludwig, and brother, Gerald Dyer and wife Janice.

Donna Mearl Marcellus

Alice Marie Stithem, passed away on October 16, 2020 at the Presbyterian
 St. Lukes Medical Center in Denver, Colorado, at the age of 82. 

She was
 born on July 12, 1938 to Lewis and Iva (Wright) Neff in Beloit, Kansas.
 She was united in marriage to Ronald D. Stithem on June 1, 1957 in Glen
 Elder, Kansas. They were blessed with four children: Linda, David, 
Ronda, and Daniel.
 Alice was raised in Glen Elder where she graduated with the Class of
 1956. Following high school, she attended Brown Mackie College in 
Salina where she earned her degree in Secretarial Studies. She took that
 degree and utilized it the rest of her working life. 
 When Alice met Ron, the couple spent a short time in Stockton before
 later moving around due to Ron’s career as a Trooper. The couple 
eventually settled down around Hill City until Ron passed away in 2003 
and the flooding in 2018 led Alice to relocate to Hoxie where she spent 
the remainder of her years.
 Alice enjoyed her family, especially her grandchildren. While she 
was able, she kept busy traveling to any and all events they 
participated in. She was proud of her granddaughters’ state champion 
basketball teams, as well as the hard work and dedication all her 
grandchildren throw into everything they do. She also enjoyed the local 
teams, Kansas City Chiefs football, and Kansas University basketball. 
Alice loved the company of her family, including her four-legged family 
member Lady. 
 Left to cherish her memory are her children, Linda (Dwayne “Tiny”) 
Faris of Salina, KS, David (Diane) Stithem of Hoxie, and Daniel (Pam) 
Stithem of Reading, KS; and grandchildren, Colton (Kelly) Faris, Riley 
Faris, Darin (Kylie) Stithem, Darik (Carly) Stithem, Darra Stithem 
(Casey Moore), Danel (Kelly) Younkin, Joseph Stanley, Savannah Stanley, 
Kylie Stithem, Allison Stithem, Stephanie Stithem, and Nathan Stithem; 
and two great-grandchildren, Maes Stithem and Kade Moore.
 Alice is preceded in death by her parents, Lewis and Iva Neff; 
husband, Ronald Stithem; daughter, Ronda Stanley; and brother, Roy Neff.
 A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, October 23, 2020 at 10:30 
AM at the funeral home in Plainville with burial to follow at Zurich 
Cemetery. There will be no public visitation.

Weekly reports show an increase in drilling activity across the country and across Kansas. Baker Hughes reports an increase in the active drilling rig count for Oct. 16. There are 282 active rigs, an increase of 12 oil rigs over the week before. The count in Texas was up seven rigs. Utah was up three and Oklahoma gained two. Rig Counts in Kansas were up 44%. Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service reports five active rigs in eastern Kansas, up three for the week, and eight west of Wichita, which is up one. Drilling was underway Friday on leases in Ellis and Stafford counties. Kansas regulators approved twenty new drilling permits last week, eight of them east of Wichita and 12 in Western Kansas, including one each in Barton and Ellis counties. Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service reports four newly-completed wells across the state, 680 so far this year. Kansas Common crude at CHS in McPherson starts the week at $31.25 per barrel. That's a half dollar more than a week ago and more than two dollars higher than at the first of the month. Kansas crude-oil production has plummeted alongside the national numbers because of the pandemic-related price plunge. The Kansas Geological Survey reports statewide output through June averaged 76,000 barrels per day (bpd). That's down 16,000 bpd, or about 17%, compared to the same period last year. Barton, Ellis and Russell counties all showed declines through the first half of the year of more than 17%, but output in Stafford County was up more than four percent from the first-half total last year. Operators in Barton County pumped 3,718 bpd through the end of June. Ellis County produced 5727 bpd. Output in Russell County was 3,408 bpd, and Stafford County notched 2,511 bpd. The Energy Information Administration said domestic crude inventories dropped by nearly four million barrels last week, but remain about 11% above the five-year seasonal average. EIA said U.S. crude-oil production totals declined half a million barrels per day last week. Current U.S. output is 10.45 million [["ten point four five million"]] barrels per day, That's down more than two million barrels per day from a year ago, a decline of about 17%. The government said U.S. crude imports averaged 5.3 million barrels per day last week, down nearly half a million from the week before. The four-week average is down more than 15% from a year ago. Most motorists are seeing stability at the gas pump. The auto club AAA says weekly statewide averages held steady in 45 of the 50 states. At $2.17 a gallon, the national average is down a penny from a month ago, while the average in Kansas is four cents lower than last month at $1.94 per gallon.&nbsp; You can find it for $1.92 at several stations in Hays, but it's up to $1.99 in Great Bend. Oil-by-rail traffic remains nearly 20% behind last year even as grain shipments help bring total rail traffic out of its long downturn. Grain shipments are up 31% year-over-year, while total traffic is up two percent. The Association of American Railroads reports 10,259 tanker cars hauling petroleum or petroleum products during the week ending October 10, down 169 cars from the week before.&nbsp; August crude oil production in the nation's second biggest producing state increased in August, jumping 120,000 barrels per day over the final July totals. The Department of Mineral Resources reports total output in North Dakota increased to more than 36 million barrels, or 1.16 million [["one point one six million"]] barrels per day. That's down nearly half a million barrels per day from the all-time high reached last November. The downturn in North Dakota production has brought the state within its anti-flaring goals, which had been out of reach a year ago. Regulators said operators there were able to capture 92% of the natural gas produced by its oil wells in August. That's well within the state's goals which will expand to 91% next month. Goldman Sachs offers a surprising perspective on the presidential election. According to the Houston Chronicle, a research note released Sunday says a Blue Wave in the election would be a positive catalyst for the oil patch. The note says tougher regulations on hydraulic fracturing would likely reduce production, and thus raise prices. Newspapers across Texas, including the Chronicle, have been documenting some dramatic steps being taken in the Texas oil patch to hedge against a win by Democrats. The Russian oil pipeline monopoly and that country's biggest producer have reached a settlement with the French oil firm Total over dirty crude supplies. Upwards of 35 million barrels of crude contaminated with organic chlorides were sent to a German refinery last year. The amount of the settlement was not announced.&nbsp; Libya took a major step toward reviving its battered oil industry by reopening its biggest field. Libya’s state energy company lifted restrictions and expects upwards of 300,000 barrels per day by next week, nearly doubling Libya's output. The reopening follows a truce in Libya’s long-running civil war that’s already led to many oil fields and ports in the east starting up after an almost total shutdown since January.

WAKEENEY — As a Halloween treat, WaKeeney Public Library will sponsor a free performance of&nbsp;Murder at the Wolf Hotel&nbsp;on Sunday, October 25, at 1 p.m. at Jake &amp; Chet’s Café,&nbsp;233 S. 1st Street in WaKeeney.&nbsp; The show is open to customers who have already come for lunch and also to members of the community who just want to see the show.&nbsp; All audience members will enjoy a free dessert and coffee, tea or soda, compliments of the Library.&nbsp;&nbsp;

When Chris McCord, owner of the Historic Wolf Hotel in Ellinwood, KS called performing artist Brett Crandall, it didn’t take long for the two to realize they have a lot in common. They are both passionate entrepreneurs. Both have very big ideas. But the two also share a unique, personal drive to showcase the wholesome, yet gritty charm of the Sunflower State to the world.&nbsp; After a brief meeting and tour of the well-preserved landmark, Crandall began to piece together a comedy riddled with crimes inspired by&nbsp;Ellinwood’s colorful history.&nbsp;&nbsp;The result was&nbsp;Murder at the Wolf Hotel, a new interactive murder-mystery play in which a bumbling detective sleuths out which of the suspects, volunteers from the audience, is guilty.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Brett Crandall is an actor, writer, producer and puppeteer who received his formal acting training at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York.&nbsp; He then appeared in plays in New York as well as in tours of children’s shows with the Traveling Lantern Theatre&nbsp;Company in the Northeast.&nbsp;&nbsp;He played multiple characters in&nbsp;Robin Hood, Pinocchio,&nbsp;A Christmas Carol, and&nbsp;The Caterpillar Hunter&nbsp;forlibraries and elementary schools.&nbsp;

A few years ago, Brett created his own production company, Brett Crandall Studios, to bring “performance opportunities for both artists and audiences” to different parts of the country.&nbsp;&nbsp;His recent productions include&nbsp;The Wizard of Oz, Oliver Twist, and&nbsp;A Christmas Carol.&nbsp;&nbsp;

For this new original play, inspired by Kansas history during the Prohibition Era, Crandall researched the town of Ellinwood.&nbsp; It was originally a stop along the Santa Fe Trail and attracted many German and Austrian immigrants.&nbsp; It expanded as a popular rest station for cowboys on the Cox Cattle Trail with up to eleven saloons by the turn of the century in an&nbsp;underground complex of barber shops, blacksmith shops, brothels and other stores built under the town’s main streets.&nbsp; “The Underground” is now a tourist destination along with the refurbished Wolf Hotel.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Since its debut,&nbsp;the play&nbsp;has been performed in Satanta, Garden City, Lawrence, Liberal, and Crandall’s hometown of Deerfield.&nbsp; Crandall explains one of his goals is to shed light on the lives of disenfranchised Kansans of the past, such as interracial and LGBTQ+ couples, by offering a diverse representation and historical context left out of the history books.&nbsp; He hopes to “dispel myths about what minorities experienced 100 years ago and may still experience today.”

Murder at the Wolf Hotel&nbsp;will be performed in the lounge area and side room at Jake &amp; Chet’s Cafe which has plenty of atmosphere to evoke the hotel speakeasy setting.&nbsp; There is also room for spacing of tables and groups to observe the social distancing and precautions for Covid-19 that is already the norm at the restaurant.&nbsp;&nbsp; The Library will also be offering free face masks, hand sanitizer, and cool door prizes for attendees.

The process of fermenting foods – to preserve them and make them more digestible and more nutritious is as old as humanity. Fermented foods are a powerful aid to digestion and a protection against disease. There is an increased interest today to learn the basics of fermentation and how adding more fermented food to the diet can impact health. Join Donna Krug on Thursday, the 22nd&nbsp;as she shares the basic process of fermenting foods in a wide mouth canning jar. Tested recipes will be shared. By following the simple steps outlined in Donna’s fact sheet you will have the tools to safely experiment with fermenting foods in your own kitchen.&nbsp;

The program will be held in the large meeting room at the back of the Extension office in Hays and social distancing will be practiced. UNRUH: Taking a new look at fermented foods

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a fatal shooting and asking the public for help to locate two suspects identified as 31-year-old Latrelle Sheneice Praylow and Todge Anderson.

Just after 11:30a.m. October 3, police responded to a call for service at a home in the 300 Block of SW Polk in Topeka for a check welfare, according to&nbsp;LT Jerry Monasmith.

On arrival, officers found 38-year-old Christopher McMillon with what appeared to be a gunshot wound. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.&nbsp;

Police asked that if you see either Parylow or Anderson, please do not attempt to apprehend them yourself. Call 911 immediately.&nbsp;

On arrival, officers found McMillon with what appeared to be a gunshot wound. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. Police released no additional details early Sunday.

Call 911 immediately.&nbsp;---------SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a fatal shooting and have identified the victim as&nbsp; Christopher McMillon, 38, of Topeka. Just after 11:30a.m. Saturday, police responded to a call for service at a home in the 300 Block of SW Polk for a check welfare, according to&nbsp;LT Jerry Monasmith.On arrival, officers found McMillon with what appeared to be a gunshot wound. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. Genevieve
 Ann (Hruza) Morris, 86, passed away Sunday, October 18, 2020. She was a
 resident of the Minneapolis Health and Rehabilitation Center.&nbsp; She was 
born August 27, 1934 in Edgemont, South Dakota to John and Elizabeth 
(Wiles) Hruza.

She and 
Norman Morris were united in marriage on April 1, 1952 at Burr Oak, 
Kansas.&nbsp; She held a deep love for children and was an early elementary 
teacher throughout most of her life.&nbsp;

After 
their marriage, the army sent Norman to Korea and Genevieve began 
earning her teaching certificate at Fort Hays. In 1953 her teaching 
career began in a one room schoolhouse near Burr Oak, Kansas.&nbsp; She then 
taught at the public grade school in Burr Oak.&nbsp; Next was Valley View 
School near Webber, Kansas. Valley View closed and she taught at Hardy, 
Nebraska. She and Norman moved to Minden, Nebraska where she worked as a
 secretary at Pioneer Village.&nbsp; She missed children and teaching, so she
 went back to college at McPherson College, McPherson, Kansas to 
complete her full degree. She began her new teaching career in Lindsay 
Nebraska Catholic Schools.&nbsp; She finished her teaching career in Osborne,
 Kansas and retired in 1995.&nbsp; She then moved to Minneapolis to be closer
 to her son Duane and his family.&nbsp;

She was 
preceded in death by her parents John and Elizabeth Hruza, her husband 
Norman Morris, her brother Laverne Hruza, and her sister Mary Lou 
Tooch.&nbsp;

Survivors
 are her brother Joy Hruza of Salina, son Duane (Juanita) Morris of 
Minneapolis; two grandsons Justin (Denise) Morris of Longview, Texas; 
Jarod (Krystin) Morris of Bethany, Oklahoma; 10 great-grandchildren.

Graveside
 services will be Thursday, October 22, 2020 at 2 pm at the Burr Oak, 
Cemetery.&nbsp; In lieu of flowers, memorials may be to Kindred Hospice and 
be mailed to Wilson Family Funeral Home, P.O. Box 166, Minneapolis, KS 
67467.

Genevieve Ann (Hruza) Morris

Charles Phillip Aldrich, 79, passed away October 16, 2020, at Wesley Medical Center.

He was born in Garfield, Kansas on April 17, 1941, to Charles Edgar and LaVergne (Appel) Aldrich.

Phil graduated from Garfield High School in 1959, Fort Hays State University in 1964 and then Washburn Law School in 1967. He started his career as an attorney in Salina, KS with Blackwell and Knudson and then later moved to Larned, KS and opened Aldrich Law Office in 1972. He was elected as Judge of the District Court of the Kansas 24th Judicial District in 1975 where he proudly served Pawnee, Rush, Hodgman, Edwards, Ness and Lane counties for 17 years. Upon leaving the bench, he reopened Aldrich Law Office and retired in 2002.

Since his retirement he has enjoyed coin collecting, politics and telling lawyer jokes, often to those in a quiet doctor’s office waiting room. He loved to create, build and share his memories through his many eccentric carpentry creations. He was a man of many ideas and loved to challenge others to think beyond the norm, often beyond their comfort zone. He took great pride in his family and their accomplishments. His unique, quixotic humor and unconventional wisdom will be missed. &nbsp;He lived with much purpose and resolve and cared deeply for his family.

He married Thyla Abrahamson in 1961. And from this union came three children (Greg, Doug and Beth).&nbsp; They later divorced.

He married Marilyn (Marty) Fitch in 2008 in Lincoln, NE which added a step-son, Ross Fitch to his family. &nbsp;

Survivors include: His wife Marty of the home, one sister, DeAnne Schumacher of Santa Rosa Beach, FL, one brother, Stanley Aldrich of Garfield, KS; two sons, Greg (Susan) of Manhattan, KS and Doug (Jennifer) of Garfield, KS; daughter, Beth Rein of Great Bend, KS; step-son Ross&nbsp;Fitch of Wichita, KS; 9 grandchildren Zachary and Jessica Aldrich; Blaine (Kelsey) Aldrich, Casie (Derek) Snodgrass and Allyson Aldrich; Paxton and Raef Rein; Peter and Madeleine&nbsp;Fitch and 3 great grandchildren, Tennyson Aldrich and Kynzlee and Kason Snodgrass.
