TOPEKA, Kansas – A&nbsp; Ellsworth Correctional Facility resident who died Monday, October 19, 2020 had tested positive for COVID-19. This is the sixth resident death related to COVID-19, according to a media release from the Kansas Department of Corrections.

The resident tested positive on September 26 at which time he was moved to the Lansing Correctional Facility (LCF) COVID-19 Management Unit (CMU).&nbsp; Three days later he was transported from LCF to the hospital.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

The resident’s family has asked that his name not be released.&nbsp; He was a 60-year-old black male with underlying medical concerns that contributed to his condition.&nbsp;

This resident was serving a life sentence based on four sex crime convictions from Wyandotte County, Kansas.&nbsp;

Weekly reports show an increase in drilling activity across the country and across Kansas. Baker Hughes reports an increase in the active drilling rig count for Oct. 16. There are 282 active rigs, an increase of 12 oil rigs over the week before. The count in Texas was up seven rigs. Utah was up three and Oklahoma gained two. Rig Counts in Kansas were up 44%. Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service reports five active rigs in eastern Kansas, up three for the week, and eight west of Wichita, which is up one. Drilling was underway Friday on leases in Ellis and Stafford counties. Kansas regulators approved twenty new drilling permits last week, eight of them east of Wichita and 12 in Western Kansas, including one each in Barton and Ellis counties. Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service reports four newly-completed wells across the state, 680 so far this year. Kansas Common crude at CHS in McPherson starts the week at $31.25 per barrel. That's a half dollar more than a week ago and more than two dollars higher than at the first of the month. Kansas crude-oil production has plummeted alongside the national numbers because of the pandemic-related price plunge. The Kansas Geological Survey reports statewide output through June averaged 76,000 barrels per day (bpd). That's down 16,000 bpd, or about 17%, compared to the same period last year. Barton, Ellis and Russell counties all showed declines through the first half of the year of more than 17%, but output in Stafford County was up more than four percent from the first-half total last year. Operators in Barton County pumped 3,718 bpd through the end of June. Ellis County produced 5727 bpd. Output in Russell County was 3,408 bpd, and Stafford County notched 2,511 bpd. The Energy Information Administration said domestic crude inventories dropped by nearly four million barrels last week, but remain about 11% above the five-year seasonal average. EIA said U.S. crude-oil production totals declined half a million barrels per day last week. Current U.S. output is 10.45 million [["ten point four five million"]] barrels per day, That's down more than two million barrels per day from a year ago, a decline of about 17%. The government said U.S. crude imports averaged 5.3 million barrels per day last week, down nearly half a million from the week before. The four-week average is down more than 15% from a year ago. Most motorists are seeing stability at the gas pump. The auto club AAA says weekly statewide averages held steady in 45 of the 50 states. At $2.17 a gallon, the national average is down a penny from a month ago, while the average in Kansas is four cents lower than last month at $1.94 per gallon.&nbsp; You can find it for $1.92 at several stations in Hays, but it's up to $1.99 in Great Bend. Oil-by-rail traffic remains nearly 20% behind last year even as grain shipments help bring total rail traffic out of its long downturn. Grain shipments are up 31% year-over-year, while total traffic is up two percent. The Association of American Railroads reports 10,259 tanker cars hauling petroleum or petroleum products during the week ending October 10, down 169 cars from the week before.&nbsp; August crude oil production in the nation's second biggest producing state increased in August, jumping 120,000 barrels per day over the final July totals. The Department of Mineral Resources reports total output in North Dakota increased to more than 36 million barrels, or 1.16 million [["one point one six million"]] barrels per day. That's down nearly half a million barrels per day from the all-time high reached last November. The downturn in North Dakota production has brought the state within its anti-flaring goals, which had been out of reach a year ago. Regulators said operators there were able to capture 92% of the natural gas produced by its oil wells in August. That's well within the state's goals which will expand to 91% next month. Goldman Sachs offers a surprising perspective on the presidential election. According to the Houston Chronicle, a research note released Sunday says a Blue Wave in the election would be a positive catalyst for the oil patch. The note says tougher regulations on hydraulic fracturing would likely reduce production, and thus raise prices. Newspapers across Texas, including the Chronicle, have been documenting some dramatic steps being taken in the Texas oil patch to hedge against a win by Democrats. The Russian oil pipeline monopoly and that country's biggest producer have reached a settlement with the French oil firm Total over dirty crude supplies. Upwards of 35 million barrels of crude contaminated with organic chlorides were sent to a German refinery last year. The amount of the settlement was not announced.&nbsp; Libya took a major step toward reviving its battered oil industry by reopening its biggest field. Libya’s state energy company lifted restrictions and expects upwards of 300,000 barrels per day by next week, nearly doubling Libya's output. The reopening follows a truce in Libya’s long-running civil war that’s already led to many oil fields and ports in the east starting up after an almost total shutdown since January.

WAKEENEY — As a Halloween treat, WaKeeney Public Library will sponsor a free performance of&nbsp;Murder at the Wolf Hotel&nbsp;on Sunday, October 25, at 1 p.m. at Jake &amp; Chet’s Café,&nbsp;233 S. 1st Street in WaKeeney.&nbsp; The show is open to customers who have already come for lunch and also to members of the community who just want to see the show.&nbsp; All audience members will enjoy a free dessert and coffee, tea or soda, compliments of the Library.&nbsp;&nbsp;

When Chris McCord, owner of the Historic Wolf Hotel in Ellinwood, KS called performing artist Brett Crandall, it didn’t take long for the two to realize they have a lot in common. They are both passionate entrepreneurs. Both have very big ideas. But the two also share a unique, personal drive to showcase the wholesome, yet gritty charm of the Sunflower State to the world.&nbsp; After a brief meeting and tour of the well-preserved landmark, Crandall began to piece together a comedy riddled with crimes inspired by&nbsp;Ellinwood’s colorful history.&nbsp;&nbsp;The result was&nbsp;Murder at the Wolf Hotel, a new interactive murder-mystery play in which a bumbling detective sleuths out which of the suspects, volunteers from the audience, is guilty.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Brett Crandall is an actor, writer, producer and puppeteer who received his formal acting training at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York.&nbsp; He then appeared in plays in New York as well as in tours of children’s shows with the Traveling Lantern Theatre&nbsp;Company in the Northeast.&nbsp;&nbsp;He played multiple characters in&nbsp;Robin Hood, Pinocchio,&nbsp;A Christmas Carol, and&nbsp;The Caterpillar Hunter&nbsp;forlibraries and elementary schools.&nbsp;

A few years ago, Brett created his own production company, Brett Crandall Studios, to bring “performance opportunities for both artists and audiences” to different parts of the country.&nbsp;&nbsp;His recent productions include&nbsp;The Wizard of Oz, Oliver Twist, and&nbsp;A Christmas Carol.&nbsp;&nbsp;

For this new original play, inspired by Kansas history during the Prohibition Era, Crandall researched the town of Ellinwood.&nbsp; It was originally a stop along the Santa Fe Trail and attracted many German and Austrian immigrants.&nbsp; It expanded as a popular rest station for cowboys on the Cox Cattle Trail with up to eleven saloons by the turn of the century in an&nbsp;underground complex of barber shops, blacksmith shops, brothels and other stores built under the town’s main streets.&nbsp; “The Underground” is now a tourist destination along with the refurbished Wolf Hotel.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Since its debut,&nbsp;the play&nbsp;has been performed in Satanta, Garden City, Lawrence, Liberal, and Crandall’s hometown of Deerfield.&nbsp; Crandall explains one of his goals is to shed light on the lives of disenfranchised Kansans of the past, such as interracial and LGBTQ+ couples, by offering a diverse representation and historical context left out of the history books.&nbsp; He hopes to “dispel myths about what minorities experienced 100 years ago and may still experience today.”

Murder at the Wolf Hotel&nbsp;will be performed in the lounge area and side room at Jake &amp; Chet’s Cafe which has plenty of atmosphere to evoke the hotel speakeasy setting.&nbsp; There is also room for spacing of tables and groups to observe the social distancing and precautions for Covid-19 that is already the norm at the restaurant.&nbsp;&nbsp; The Library will also be offering free face masks, hand sanitizer, and cool door prizes for attendees.

The process of fermenting foods – to preserve them and make them more digestible and more nutritious is as old as humanity. Fermented foods are a powerful aid to digestion and a protection against disease. There is an increased interest today to learn the basics of fermentation and how adding more fermented food to the diet can impact health. Join Donna Krug on Thursday, the 22nd&nbsp;as she shares the basic process of fermenting foods in a wide mouth canning jar. Tested recipes will be shared. By following the simple steps outlined in Donna’s fact sheet you will have the tools to safely experiment with fermenting foods in your own kitchen.&nbsp;

The program will be held in the large meeting room at the back of the Extension office in Hays and social distancing will be practiced. UNRUH: Taking a new look at fermented foods

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a fatal shooting and asking the public for help to locate two suspects identified as 31-year-old Latrelle Sheneice Praylow and Todge Anderson.

Just after 11:30a.m. October 3, police responded to a call for service at a home in the 300 Block of SW Polk in Topeka for a check welfare, according to&nbsp;LT Jerry Monasmith.

On arrival, officers found 38-year-old Christopher McMillon with what appeared to be a gunshot wound. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.&nbsp;

Police asked that if you see either Parylow or Anderson, please do not attempt to apprehend them yourself. Call 911 immediately.&nbsp;

On arrival, officers found McMillon with what appeared to be a gunshot wound. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. Police released no additional details early Sunday.

Police: Search continues for suspects in Kan. man's murder

Genevieve
 Ann (Hruza) Morris, 86, passed away Sunday, October 18, 2020. She was a
 resident of the Minneapolis Health and Rehabilitation Center.&nbsp; She was 
born August 27, 1934 in Edgemont, South Dakota to John and Elizabeth 
(Wiles) Hruza.

She and 
Norman Morris were united in marriage on April 1, 1952 at Burr Oak, 
Kansas.&nbsp; She held a deep love for children and was an early elementary 
teacher throughout most of her life.&nbsp;

After 
their marriage, the army sent Norman to Korea and Genevieve began 
earning her teaching certificate at Fort Hays. In 1953 her teaching 
career began in a one room schoolhouse near Burr Oak, Kansas.&nbsp; She then 
taught at the public grade school in Burr Oak.&nbsp; Next was Valley View 
School near Webber, Kansas. Valley View closed and she taught at Hardy, 
Nebraska. She and Norman moved to Minden, Nebraska where she worked as a
 secretary at Pioneer Village.&nbsp; She missed children and teaching, so she
 went back to college at McPherson College, McPherson, Kansas to 
complete her full degree. She began her new teaching career in Lindsay 
Nebraska Catholic Schools.&nbsp; She finished her teaching career in Osborne,
 Kansas and retired in 1995.&nbsp; She then moved to Minneapolis to be closer
 to her son Duane and his family.&nbsp;

She was 
preceded in death by her parents John and Elizabeth Hruza, her husband 
Norman Morris, her brother Laverne Hruza, and her sister Mary Lou 
Tooch.&nbsp;

Survivors
 are her brother Joy Hruza of Salina, son Duane (Juanita) Morris of 
Minneapolis; two grandsons Justin (Denise) Morris of Longview, Texas; 
Jarod (Krystin) Morris of Bethany, Oklahoma; 10 great-grandchildren.

Graveside
 services will be Thursday, October 22, 2020 at 2 pm at the Burr Oak, 
Cemetery.&nbsp; In lieu of flowers, memorials may be to Kindred Hospice and 
be mailed to Wilson Family Funeral Home, P.O. Box 166, Minneapolis, KS 
67467.

Genevieve Ann (Hruza) Morris

Charles Phillip Aldrich, 79, passed away October 16, 2020, at Wesley Medical Center.

He was born in Garfield, Kansas on April 17, 1941, to Charles Edgar and LaVergne (Appel) Aldrich.

Phil graduated from Garfield High School in 1959, Fort Hays State University in 1964 and then Washburn Law School in 1967. He started his career as an attorney in Salina, KS with Blackwell and Knudson and then later moved to Larned, KS and opened Aldrich Law Office in 1972. He was elected as Judge of the District Court of the Kansas 24th Judicial District in 1975 where he proudly served Pawnee, Rush, Hodgman, Edwards, Ness and Lane counties for 17 years. Upon leaving the bench, he reopened Aldrich Law Office and retired in 2002.

Since his retirement he has enjoyed coin collecting, politics and telling lawyer jokes, often to those in a quiet doctor’s office waiting room. He loved to create, build and share his memories through his many eccentric carpentry creations. He was a man of many ideas and loved to challenge others to think beyond the norm, often beyond their comfort zone. He took great pride in his family and their accomplishments. His unique, quixotic humor and unconventional wisdom will be missed. &nbsp;He lived with much purpose and resolve and cared deeply for his family.

He married Thyla Abrahamson in 1961. And from this union came three children (Greg, Doug and Beth).&nbsp; They later divorced.

He married Marilyn (Marty) Fitch in 2008 in Lincoln, NE which added a step-son, Ross Fitch to his family. &nbsp;

Survivors include: His wife Marty of the home, one sister, DeAnne Schumacher of Santa Rosa Beach, FL, one brother, Stanley Aldrich of Garfield, KS; two sons, Greg (Susan) of Manhattan, KS and Doug (Jennifer) of Garfield, KS; daughter, Beth Rein of Great Bend, KS; step-son Ross&nbsp;Fitch of Wichita, KS; 9 grandchildren Zachary and Jessica Aldrich; Blaine (Kelsey) Aldrich, Casie (Derek) Snodgrass and Allyson Aldrich; Paxton and Raef Rein; Peter and Madeleine&nbsp;Fitch and 3 great grandchildren, Tennyson Aldrich and Kynzlee and Kason Snodgrass.

Charles Phillip Aldrich

Alfred Joseph “Joe” Korbe of Wallace County and Garden City was born 
July 27, 1952, in Scott City, Ks to Alfred and Leona Korbe.  He grew up 
in Leoti Kansas and went to Leoti Grade school, Marienthal Parochial 
School, Leoti Jr. High School, and graduated from Wichita County High 
School in 1970.  He met and started dating his wife Paula in 1973.  They
 were married on August 13, 1977.  A year later, they welcomed the first
 of their 5 children.  Joe loved his family. 

When it comes to wealth, 
Joe was rich where it counts, his family’s love. Joe had a passion for 
many things. He loved hunting, fishing, and all things outdoors. He 
also loved gardening. It was not uncommon for Joe to get carried away 
with his garden and plant hundreds of plants when a dozen would do. Joe
 also had a passion for animals. Not just the “normal” animals, he had a
 fondness for unique and interesting animals. Some of those unique 
animals included llamas, mammoth jack donkeys, racing pigeons, and goats
 among many others. But when talking about Joe’s passions, his passion 
for his family cannot be overlooked. To say he loved his family is an 
understatement. They were always his passion and they are his legacy. 
Joe is survived by his wife Paula of Garden City, His daughter Stephanie
 Stroud, her husband Brad and their 3 children Joey, Levi, and Vivienne 
of Lenexa, KS; his son Travis Korbe and his 7 children, David, Ethan, 
Trevor, Tyler, Travis Jr., and Emilee of Sharron Springs and Spencer of 
Laramie Wy; his son Christopher Korbe, his wife Sarah and their 4 
children Liam, Noah, Connor and Brody, of Spearville, Ks; His son Andrew
 Korbe, his wife Hailey and their 2 children Maddex and Haidyn of Garden
 City; and his daughter Caiti and her 2 children Bryleigh and Brynnalee 
also of Garden City. Other survivors include his brother Jerry Korbe, 
his wife Cindy, and their 2 children Jonathan and Justin of Dodge City. 
 He is preceded in death by his parents Alfred Korbe and Leona Mae 
Atkinson Korbe, and niece Melissa “Missy” Korbe. 
A funeral is scheduled for Friday October 23, 2020 at 10:30 Mountain 
time at the United Methodist Church of Sharon Springs. Pastor Galen 
Crippen will officiate. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Joe’s 
life. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial tributes be 
directed to Joe’s medical and funeral fund via Paula Korbe to assist

Darrell “Shorty” Kershner, 80, passed away October 19, 2020, at 
Woodhaven Care Center, Ellinwood. He was born on July 30, 1040, at 
La Crosse, to Eldred &amp; Leona (King) Kershner.

A lifetime Great Bend resident, Darrell was a service manager for the
 chevy dealership. He was a member of Faith Community Church. He enjoyed
 watching tv, especially Nascar races, NFL and PRCA rodeos.

Survivors include, a son, Brad Kershner and wife Kim of Great Bend; a
 daughter, Kimberly Kershner of Chandler, Ariz.; a brother, Donald 
Kershner and wife Betty of Eads, Colo.; two grandchildren, Tara 
Kershner, and Kaylee Chavez and husband Pedro; and two great 
grandchildren, Tirerstyn Kershner, and Kaylyn Kershner. He was preceded 
in death by his parents; a brother, Richard Kershner; and sister, Janet 
Rivera.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place and services
 will be announced at a later date. Memorials are suggested to the 
American Diabetes Association, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Virginia I. Quigley, 98, Hays, died Sunday, October 18, 2020 at Medicalodges Great Bend.

She was born July 26, 1922 in 
Manhattan, Kansas, the daughter of Harrison and Elizabeth (Richards) 
Reed.&nbsp; She graduated from Manhattan High School in 1940 and attended 
Kansas State University.&nbsp; On June 15, 1941 she was united in marriage to
 Clarence “Al” Quigley, Sr. in Manhattan, and they celebrated 53 years 
of marriage before he preceded her in death on August 11, 1994.&nbsp; She was
 an American Red Cross volunteer at the Fort Riley Hospital, a hospital 
nurse’s aide in Great Bend, sales clerk in the men’s department of 
MacDonald’s Department Store in Hays, and served in the Foster 
Grandparent Program.&nbsp; Virginia was an active member of the First United 
Methodist Church of Hays, volunteering with the Peddler’s Fair and the 
gatherings on Wednesdays.&nbsp; She enjoyed camping, going to Steam Shows, 
and hosting Mardi Gras parties.&nbsp; Her loves were faith, family, and 
football and she showed these loves as a Green Bay Packers and K-State 
fan, painting wood projects Al made, and doing many craft projects with 
her grandchildren.

Survivors include two sons:&nbsp; Mark 
Quigley and wife Becky and Chris Quigley and wife Tina, all of Hays, a 
daughter:&nbsp; Mary Sloan and husband Larry of Albert, two 
daughters-in-law:&nbsp; Linda Quigley of Derby and Kathy Quigley of 
Manhattan, 11 grandchildren:&nbsp; Sherry Johnson, Jill Quigley, Danielle 
Miller, Jacob Sloan, Jessie Sloan, Jodie Sloan, Chad Quigley, Amber 
Delcamp, Dylan Quigley, Christina DelloRusso, and Megan Stecklein, 18 
great grandchildren:&nbsp; Benjamin, Olivia, Elijah, Sara, Montana, Wyatt, 
Colton, Elizabeth, Ethan, Davis, Tyler, Helen, Anna, Aubrey, Kobie, 
Oliver, Owen, and Charlie, and three great-great grandchildren:&nbsp; Hadley,
 Cale, and Kaylynn.

She was preceded in death by her 
parents, her husband Al, three sons:&nbsp; C.A. Quigley, Jr., Dan Quigley,

Friday, October 23, 2020 at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, with Rev.

Larry Joseph Werth, age 75, of La Crosse, Kansas, died Sunday, October 18, 2020, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, Hutchinson, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born June 15, 1945, in Hays, Kansas, to Alfred J. and Martina L. (Schaffer) Werth.&nbsp; He married Henrietta (Oswald) on April 25, 1992, in LaCrosse, Kansas.

He was a farmer and a salesman at Steinle’s Menswear Store in Russell, Kansas for a number of years.&nbsp; He move to La Crosse from Russell in 1978 where he farmed in the Liebenthal area.&nbsp; He grew up on the farm at Schoenchen, and was a1963 graduate of Schoenchen High School.&nbsp; He was a member of St. Michaels Catholic Church, La Crosse, Kansas, Russell Knights of Columbus and past Grand Knight, and a 35-year member of A.A.&nbsp; He and his wife operated the “Moo Cow Shack” food vending trailer for 11 years traveling to fairs, auctions, sidewalk sales and etc.&nbsp; Larry enjoyed cooking and good food,&nbsp;meeting and working with the people while having the food trailer, gardening, watching western movies, and his family.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Survivors include his wife, Henrietta Werth, of the home; three sons, Lonnie Werth and wife, Diane, Salina, KS; Montie Werth and wife, LaDonna, O’Neil, NE; Donnie Werth; one daughter, Marcie Jekic and husband, Nick, Olathe, KS; one sister-in-law, Judy Werth, La Crosse, KS; seven step-children including, James Rohleder and wife, Elaine, Hays, KS; David Rohleder and wife, Linda, Salina, KS; Denise Rohleder, Olathe, KS; seven grandchildren, Brandon Werth, Callie Werth, Lawrence Werth, LaShanna Werth, Amanda Watskey, Emily Watskey, Ethan Jekic; 16 step-grandchildren; and nine step-great grandchildren. &nbsp;

A private family funeral service will be held, and burial will be at the LaCrosse City Cemetery, LaCrosse, Kansas.

&nbsp;SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a stolen vehicle and have a suspect in custody.

Just after 3a.m. October 17, a sheriff’s deputy conducted a car stop on a maroon 2002 Ford Ranger at SE 29th Street and SE Bennett Drive, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

The deputy recognized the vehicle as stolen from recent agency criminal intelligence and was reported stolen from the Topeka Police Department.

The deputy took the driver, Delbert L. New III, 39, of Topeka,&nbsp; into custody for further questioning. He was booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges that included multiple traffic infractions.

New has precious convictions for failure to remain at the scene of an accident, domestic battery, driving while suspended and for drug convictions, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

Sheriff finds Kansas felon driving stolen pickup

SEDGWICK COUNTY — A Kansas felon arrested in connection with two cases of sex assault made his first court appearance in the case on Friday.

 Patrick Newborn, 33, Wichita, was charged&nbsp;criminal threat, 2 counts of domestic battery, criminal trespass, 4 counts of aggravated burglary, 6 counts of aggravated robbery, 6 counts of rape, 7 counts of criminal possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, 2 counts of aggravated intimidation of a witness, 3 counts of aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, 2 counts of aggravated battery, attempted rape, aggravated criminal sodomy, attempted aggravated robbery, aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer, interference with a law enforcement officer, battery (misdemeanor), according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

On August 29, Wichita police began a sexual assault and robbery investigation following an incident reported in the 6100 Block of East Boston, according to Captain Jason Stephens.

Two victims reported an attempted robbery at gunpoint. The female victims reported the suspect, later identified as 33-year-old Patrick Newborn of Wichita, had committed a sexual assault against her one to two weeks earlier, according to Stephens.

On Sept. 13, police investigated another sexual assault involving a different victim at a residence in the 700 Block of South Pershing in Wichita. Investigators determined the cases were likely connected and later confirmed that.

On Sept. 15, police learned that Newborn was wanted on a felony warrant for being a parole absconder, according to Stephens. Officers located him Tuesday in 9100 Block of East Harry in Wichita. Upon confronting him, Newborn pulled a handgun and threatened the officers.

The officers retreated from the residence and called in the SWAT team. The SWAT team established a perimeter around the location and spent 7 hours communicating with Newborn.

Just after 1a.m. Sept. 16, he gave himself up and was taken into custody without further incident, according to Stephens.

He has a previous conviction for Aggravated Indecent Liberties, Sex Intercourse with a victim under the age of 16, according to the Kansas Dept. of Corrections.

Newborn is being held on a bond of $250,000.&nbsp; Attorneys in the case are scheduled to discuss it with Judge Jeff Syrios on October 1, according to the district attorney's office.

Georgianna Marie "Georgia" Weber, 74, of Hutchinson, died October 14,
 2020, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. She was born October 23, 1945, in 
Norton, to Frank W. and Ruth J. (Bielser) Currier.

Georgia graduated from Hoxie High School in 1963 and from Northwest 
Kansas Technical College, as well as attended Fort Hays State 
University. She served on the kitchen staff in the Colby and St. Marys 
public schools. Georgia enjoyed camping and loved watching birds. She 
was a member of Hoxie Presbyterian Church.

On July 29, 1967, Georgia married Max E. Weber in Hoxie. They shared 53 years of marriage. He survives.

Also surviving are: daughters, Ronda Hedrick (Aryn) of Nickerson, and
 Jenifer Lasky (Michael) of Wichita; grandchildren, Cayle, Lian, and 
Rayne Hedrick; sister, Wanita Smith (Tom) of Crestwell, OR; nephew, 
Scott Smith (Chris Brooks); great-nephew, Tanner Smith; great-nieces, 
Stephanie Mendoza (Luis), and Kimmie, Sol, Lily and Every Mendoza.

Georgia was preceded in death by her parents.

Clifford LaVerne “Red” Steckman, 84, of Bunker Hill, Kansas, passed away Friday, October 16, 2020, at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas.

Red was born May 11, 1936, in Maywood, Nebraska.&nbsp; He was one of six children born to Doral C. and Mae Etta (Noah) Steckman.&nbsp; He grew up in California and Nebraska, graduating from Palisade, Nebraska in 1954. &nbsp;

Red served his country in the U.S. Air Force for eight and half years.&nbsp; He was a Crash Rescue and Fireman.

Red was united in marriage to Patricia Thayer on May 17, 1957, in Fort Morgan, Colorado, while he was in the military.&nbsp; This union was blessed with five children; Cliff, Leroy, LaResa, Charles and Tonnett.&nbsp; After his service, they lived in Macksville, Wichita, St. John, Johnson, Colby and Bunker Hill.

Red was an independent Truck Driver for many companies.&nbsp; He was the owner and operator of the Steckman Construction Company in the '70s.&nbsp; He was a Lineman for St. John and Johnson, Kansas; did road maintenance in Stafford County, ran a loader for Brown &amp; Brown and Venture Corp in Great Bend and retired from Venture.&nbsp; He was a member of the Russell American Legion Post #99.&nbsp; Red was an adventurous man who enjoyed being outside.&nbsp; He loved fishing, hunting coyotes and sharing his great sense of humor with family and friends.

Surviving family include his wife of 63 years, Patricia of the home; sons, Cliff Steckman of Fayetteville, Arkansas, Leroy Steckman (Joetta) of Russell, Kansas, Charles Steckman (Deborah) of Houston, Texas; daughters, LaResa Likes (Eugene) of Great Bend, Kansas and Tonnett Rusch (Ruby) of Ellsworth, Kansas; sisters, Frances Moreland of Fort Morgan, Colorado, Lee Summers of Whitewater, Kansas and Mary McCune of Pratt, Kansas; 18 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren.

Albert T. Walt, age 86, passed away at Cedar Village Long Term Care, Ness City, Kansas, on October 17, 2020.

Albert was born on Feburary 18, 1934 on the family farm near Collyer, Kansas, the son of Leocadia Kuntz and Antone Walt.

Albert attended Banner grade school, went on to graduate from St. 
Joseph's Military Academy (Thomas More Prep-Marian Jr./Sr. High School) 
Seminarian Class of 1952. Attended College at Ft. Hays State University.

Albert served in the US ARMY from March 1954 to March 1956

October 12, 1959, he married the love of his life Alberta A. Zimmerman who proceeded him in death on May 21, 2014.

Albert and Alberta made Utica, KS home from 1961 – 1996 where he worked at Utica Grain Inc.

In 1996 they made the move to Ness City Ks., Albert continued to work at Utica Grain Inc. until his retirement in 1998.

Albert was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and a 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus member.

Albert enjoyed going to polka dances with Alberta, fishing, hunting 
and never missed a chance to be at his children and grandchildren’s ball
 games. He spent countless nights on the porch listening to the Royals 
on the radio no matter how bad they were at the time. He was a caring 
and loving man and he will be missed greatly by the family and friends 
he has left behind.

Survivors include his sons, Tom Walt, Utica, KS, and Rodney (Traci) 
Walt, Lee Summit, MO; daughters, Bonnie Von Lintel, Elkhart, KS, Connie

Joseph's Military Academy (Thomas More Prep-Marian Jr./Sr. High School) 
Seminarian Class of 1952. Attended College at Ft. Hays State University.Albert served in the US ARMY from March 1954 to March 1956October 12, 1959, he married the love of his life Alberta A. Zimmerman who proceeded him in death on May 21, 2014.Albert and Alberta made Utica, KS home from 1961 – 1996 where he worked at Utica Grain Inc.In 1996 they made the move to Ness City Ks., Albert continued to work at Utica Grain Inc. until his retirement in 1998.Albert was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and a 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus member.Albert enjoyed going to polka dances with Alberta, fishing, hunting 
and never missed a chance to be at his children and grandchildren’s ball
 games. He spent countless nights on the porch listening to the Royals 
on the radio no matter how bad they were at the time. He was a caring 
and loving man and he will be missed greatly by the family and friends

Norma Jean Wagner, 85, passed away October 18, 2020, at her home in 
Great Bend. She was born July 27, 1935, in Bison, Kansas, to Jacob &amp; 
Rebecka (Brack) Hartman.

Norma was a waitress for many years and helped open up the Pizza Hut 
on Main street in Great Bend, waitressing there for 15 years. She was a 
member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Otis.

She met Harold Wagner, the love of her life, in December 1958 and 
married him on June 21, 1959. Norma and Harold looked forward to every 
October going to Albuquerque, New Mexico, for the 8 day Hot Air Balloon 
Fiesta. She loved it. Norma and Harold were on a chase crew for 20 years
 and attended for 23 years. It was wonderful.

She was a proud mother of two girls, Deby (Wagner) Newsome, and Kim 
(Wagner) Roach, both of Great Bend; three grandchildren, Courtney James 
Wagner, Jayden Roach, and Jacob Roach; one sister in law, Arlene Maier 
of Colby; her beloved shih tzu, Abby; special friends, Paul and Karen 
Lambert, and Britt and Amy Guthrie; and her grandchildren in heart, 
Garett Guthrie, Gavin Guthrie, Dave Meyer, and Rachel Bennison. She was 
preceded in death by her parents, Jacob and Rebecka Hartman; her 
husband, Harold Wagner; a brother, Marvin Hartman, and twin brother, 
Norman Hartman.&nbsp;

TOPEKA&nbsp;– Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services (KDADS) Secretary Laura Howard announced Monday that one staff member at Larned State Hospital (LSH) died on Wednesday, October 15, due to complications from COVID-19. This is the first staff member death at any of the four state hospitals related to the virus.

“I was saddened to learn of this news, and I extend my condolences to both the family and the rest of the hospital staff as they cope with this tragic loss,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said.&nbsp;“Our civil servants have worked selflessly throughout the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure the safety of those under their care. My administration will continue to support them by leveraging the resources and equipment needed to keep workers safe and limit the spread of the virus in high-risk areas.”

The staff member had more than 3 years of dedicated service to LSH and the State of Kansas. The staff member has not been on campus for several weeks and did not have contact with patients or residents. To protect their identity, no further information will be released.

“This is a sad time for our agency and for the dedicated staff at Larned State Hospital, a day we all hoped would never come,”&nbsp;Secretary Howard said.&nbsp;“We extend our deepest sympathies to the family we know is struggling with losing their loved one and our other hospital staffers mourning a co-worker.”

The State of Kansas Employee Assistance Program (EAP) has guidance consultants available to all staff members who may need additional support in dealing with this loss. EAP offers confidential help and support 24 hours a day, 7 days per week, at no cost to employees and their immediate family.

The hospital began screening all staff on March 27, 2020, monitoring temperatures upon entry into the facility and has been taking patient and resident temperatures twice a day since then.

LSH&nbsp;in Pawnee County is a psychiatric hospital operated by KDADS. It is the largest psychiatric facility in the state of Kansas with more than 700 employees. The hospital has three distinct programs, the Sexual Predator Treatment Program (SPTP), the State Security Program (SSP), and the PSP. The PSP is accredited by The Joint Commission (TJC) and certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

In the fourth quarter of Saturday’s contest at West Virginia, Williams received the West Virginia kickoff at the 8-yard line and out-ran defenders for a 92-yard touchdown. The kickoff return touchdown was the first for Kansas since 2016 when Laquvionte Gonzalez returned a kickoff 99 yards against Ohio.

The kickoff return touchdown was the first of Williams’ career and his 17th&nbsp;touchdown overall. This season, Williams has returned seven kicks for 197 yards while his career numbers include 18 kickoff returns for 443 yards.

The honor is the first for a member of KU special teams since October 28, 2019, when Liam Jones was named Special Teams Player of the Week after kicking the game-winning field goal against Texas Tech. It is Kansas’ first weekly Big 12 honor this season.

The Big 12 Conference announced West Virginia’s Leddie Brown as the Offensive Player of the Week, Josh Chandler-Semedo as Defensive Player of the Week and Akheem Mesidor as Newcomer of the Week.

🏈 KU's Pooka Williams Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week

Robert Walker "R.W." Yeager, passed away peacefully on October 15, 2020, surrounded by family at the Andbe Home in Norton, Kansas. He was 89. 

R.W. was born on September 28, 1931, in Ashland, Kansas to William Raymond and Margaret (Piatt) Yeager. When he was young, his family moved to Wichita, Kansas, where he attended Blessed Sacrament grade school through the 8th grade. He attended high school at St. Joseph Military Academy in Hays, Kansas, graduating in 1949. R.W. received a degree in Business Administration from Kansas State University in 1953. 

At K-State, he met the love of his life, Doris L. Schwab. On December 30, 1952, they were married at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Wichita, and would have celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary this year. At K-State, R.W. was a member of ROTC and the Phi Kappa Theta social fraternity. He and Doris made their home in Manhattan, Kansas, until R.W.'s graduation, when they moved to Ft. Benning, Georgia for R.W.'s basic officer training. For the remainder of his military service, he was stationed at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri. Following his military service, R.W. and his family returned to Wichita, where he was a salesman for Triple S Steel Buildings. During this time, R.W. met Bill Sharp, and in 1957, he relocated his family to Norton to join Sharp Construction Company, which he eventually owned until his retirement. 

R.W. was a loyal friend and devoted community member. He was part of a group that was instrumental in Norton's growth, bringing the Pizza Hut and Sunflower Apartments to Norton. R.W. has been a longtime season ticket holder and supporter of K-State athletics and an Ahern Fund contributor. He was an avid golfer and card player at the Prairie Dog Golf Club. He enjoyed the art of creating stained glass and has many pieces displayed throughout Norton. R.W. was a staunch conservative and an active member in the Republican party. 

R.W.'s greatest joy and love in life was his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Doris, Norton; his children, Nancy (Jim) Lee, Lake Lotawana, Missouri; Sue (Greg) Gunther, Wichita; Robert "Bob" Yeager, Jr., Rio Rancho, New Mexico; nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Carl Schwab; one sister-in-law, Catherine Yeager; other relatives and many friends. 

R.W. was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Guy Yeager, daughter-in-law, Denise Yeager, and three siblings, Marge, Bill and Nancy. 

There will be a private family Mass of Christian Burial and celebration of life at a later date. Memorials are suggested to St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Norton, Kansas; the Andbe Home, Norton, Kansas; Valley Hope, Norton, Kansas or to a charity of your choice.

Charlotte Sue Roberts, daughter of Earl and Mary (Shafer) Posson, was born April 21, 1939, in Norton, Kansas, and passed away at the Andbe Home in Norton on October 18, 2020, at the age of 81.

Charlotte grew up in Norton and attended the local schools.  She married Bobby Roberts in Norton, where they made their home and raised their family.  Charlotte was an LPN at the Andbe Home for many years.  Following her retirement and later due to health issues, she became a resident of the Andbe Home where she had spent her life caring for others. 

Charlotte was a member of the Norton Christian Church.

Survivors include:  one son, Steven "Bubba" Roberts, Norton; one daughter, Carolyn Foskuhl, Norton; two brothers, Bud Posson, Norton; Bill Posson, Stuttgart, Kansas; four grandchildren, Jerrod and Aaron Roberts, Jamie McCreery and Justin Wilhite; nine great-grandchildren, Andrew and Carsen Meitl, Kaitlyn McCreery, Natalie and Kylie Roberts, Andrew, Brenden, Cayden and Dylan Wilhite; other relatives and friends.

Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son, Randy, and one sister, Peggy Kindall.

TOPEKA— The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Kansas increased by 2113 to a total of 72,968 the state health department reported Monday afternoon.&nbsp;Coronavirus deaths were reported at 872, an increase of 13.<a href="https://www.coronavirus.kdheks.gov/160/COVID-19-in-Kansas">Click here&nbsp;</a>for additional numbers from the KDHE.<figure>

Florence Jane “Janie” France, 93, Hays, died Friday, October 16, 2020, at Russell Regional Hospital.

She was born November 28, 1926, in 
Forestburg, Texas, the daughter of Noah Clifford and Zelma Bernice 
(Kuykendall) Gilley. She was a 1944 graduate of Whitharral High School 
in Whitharral, Texas. &nbsp;Janie’s first marriage was to William A. DeBusk 
on July 9, 1946, in Sudan, Texas. &nbsp;They divorced in 1970. &nbsp;Janie later 
married Jack B. France on November 5, 1976 in Denton, Texas. &nbsp;He 
preceded her in death on February 19, 1982. &nbsp;She was a telephone 
operator for General Telephone and a former member of the Church of 
Christ in Littlefield, Texas.&nbsp; She loved bowling, sewing and embroidery,
 jigsaw puzzles, visiting with family and friends, traveling and 
sightseeing, the color purple, and her precious dog Jenny.

Survivors include her son: Wayne A. 
DeBusk and wife Dolly of Hays, two granddaughters: Kristin Stone and 
husband Nathan of Little Elm, TX and Elizabeth Jorgenson and husband 
Ande of Omaha, NE, and four great grandchildren: Rebekah, Joshua, 
Tucker, and Truett.

She was preceded in death by her husband Jack, her parents, and two brothers: Elwin and Weldon Gilley.

Inurnment will be in West Park Cemetery
 in Hereford, Texas. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer 
Society, in care of Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.&nbsp; Condolences and

Florence Jane 'Janie' France

Longtime Goodland, KS resident Irma Lee Osborn, 92, passed away on Saturday, October 17, 2020, at the Topside Manor in Goodland.

Irma was born on March 31, 1928, in White City, Kansas to Irvin and LaVella Simonton.&nbsp; When she was in elementary school, the family moved to Manhattan, KS where she graduated from Manhattan High School in 1946.

After high school, she moved to Dallas, TX to pursue her dream of being and Airline Stewardess, but because she didn’t meet the height requirement, she worked in the office of Delta Airlines.&nbsp; After a year, she was homesick and moved back to Manhattan.&nbsp; She attended Kansas State University, where she met the man of her dreams.&nbsp; Edgar (Ozzie) and Irma were married in Manhattan on June 7, 1953, at the Methodist Church.

Irma spent all of her married life in Goodland, KS.&nbsp; Her passion was music.&nbsp; She owned Osborn Music Studio for 20 years where she taught many students piano, organ and guitar lessons. She was the pianist and organist for the Goodland United Methodist Church for many years.&nbsp; She was also the junior choir director for many years.&nbsp; Irma played for many wedding over the years as well.
