Visitation for Kay will be Tuesday, October 27, 2020, from 5 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Enfield Funeral Home in Norton.  A rosary service will be held Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. also at the funeral home.  Graveside service and interment will be Wednesday, October 28th, at 2:00 p.m. at the Norton Cemetery.  Memorials have been established to the Norton Public Library and St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.

Sylvia Carolee (Johnson) Thomas, 89, died at the Gove County Long Term 
Care in Quinter, Kansas, on Friday, October 23, 2020. She was born near 
Sharon Springs, Kansas to Charles and Iola Johnson. She was the youngest
 of five living siblings; two sisters died before she was born. Sylvia 
grew up mostly in Colorado and Kansas, and she attended school in Hoxie.
 She also attended Lincoln Bible College in Illinois. 
 Sylvia loved children, and was never far away from them. One of her 
most meaningful experiences as a young adult was working at a children’s
 home in Tennessee. She often referred to the things she saw and the 
lessons she learned there. In fact, she named one of her daughters after
 a girl at the orphanage. 
 Although she said she would not marry a farmer, that is just what 
she did on October 19, 1958, when she married Dean Leroy Thomas of 
Hoxie. The couple lived on the farm southeast of Hoxie. Sylvia stayed 
at home with the children, and later worked in the Hoxie Grade School as
 a cook for several years. 
 Sylvia was an active and devout Christian. During her life, she 
attended the Christian Church, the Church of Christ, and also Mt. 
Pleasant Baptist Church, where she was a member at the time of her 
death. She cooked and baked for countless funeral dinners, weddings, and
 pot lucks. Additionally, she was involved in the Eastern Star for 
several years. Raising three girls was a full time job, but she found 
time to sew, garden, read, play board games, visit the neighbors, and 
grow beautiful house plants. Sylvia was a dear, trusted friend to many.
 She loved to sing and had a beautiful voice. She sang hymns and 
popular songs, and often led singing at church camps or Vacation Bible 
School. 
 Sylvia is preceded in death by her husband Dean; parents Charles and
 Iola Johnson; brothers Charles, Ray, and Jay; and sisters Ruby 
(Johnson) Harrison, Ethel (Johnson) Clear, Wilma and Ruth Johnson.
 She is survived by her three daughters Carolyn (Howard) Nelson; 
Bonnie Galloway; and Linda (Dean) Cranston; grandchildren Melissa (Kelo)
 Turner, Jeremy Freeman, Joshua (Miranda) Freeman, Caleb (Alli) 
Galloway, Lexus Hooks, Jessica Mecham, and Samantha Mecham; 
great-grandchildren Jadyn Ware, Ava Thomas, Kayla Thomas, Kortlyn 
Turner, Leilani Freeman, Brooke Lynn Freeman, Josiah Freeman, Isaiah

EL DORADO, Kansas — The culture war issues that are polarizing
 national politics are also front and center in Kansas’ U.S. Senate 
contest: race, guns, abortion, climate change.

Supporters of 
Republican candidate Roger Marshall fear a wave of Democratic victories 
will trigger radical changes in the nation’s economy and culture; that 
capitalism will give way to socialism, undocumented immigrants will 
stream across the U.S.-Mexico border and individual liberties will be 
threatened.

Voters who favor Democratic candidate Barbara Bollier 
talk with similar alarm about what might happen if President Donald 
Trump wins a second term and Republicans keep their Senate majority — 
further erosion of democratic institutions and dire consequences for 
failing to act on climate change and long-neglected racial issues.

“No
 other Western democracy is remotely as polarized as America,” said 
Mugambi Jouet, an assistant law professor at Canada’s McGill University 
and author of the book, “Exceptional America: What Divides Americans 
From the World and From Each Other.”

A Democrat hasn’t won a U.S. Senate race in Kansas since the Great Depression, but <a href="https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/polls/kansas/" target="_blank">several recent polls</a> suggest this year’s contest could be close.

Marshall,
 a two-term congressman from western Kansas, is urging GOP voters to 
close ranks behind him, warning them that the Kansas race could 
determine whether Republicans keep their Senate majority.

At an early October event in El Dorado, he rallied his base by 
ticking through a list of “radical” changes that he believes Democrats 
would make if given the opportunity.

“They want to take away our freedoms of speech, our freedoms of religion,” Marshall said.

Continuing
 down a list of hot-button issues, he said they also want to “take away 
our Second Amendment” and lift all restrictions on late-term abortions.

“But I’m going up there to stop all that from happening,” he said.

Bollier,
 a state senator from the Kansas City suburbs who switched parties in 
2018, is instead hoping to capitalize on voter frustration with 
Washington, D.C., and promising to bridge the partisan divide.

“I’m
 not interested in the big political fights that get us nowhere,” 
Bollier said in a speech after winning the Democratic nomination in 
August. “I’m going to roll up my sleeves, find partners across the aisle
 … and simply find ways to get things done.”

That’s easier said 
than done given that much of what she supports — expanding the 
Affordable Care Act and making changes to immigration policy and police 
departments — will likely encounter stiff opposition from Republicans.

Surveys
 from the Pew Research Center show divisions between Republicans and 
Democrats on a range of fundamental political values deepened during 
Trump’s presidency, surpassing once-record levels reached during Barack 
Obama’s two terms.

The vast majority of Republicans and Democrats,
 81% of respondents in both parties, have unfavorable views of the other
 side, according to a <a href="https://www.pewresearch.org/politics/2017/10/05/the-partisan-divide-on-political-values-grows-even-wider/" target="_blank">2017 Pew report.</a>
 That same survey showed Americans were increasingly less likely to 
interact with people who held different political views or to seek out 
information that challenged their beliefs.

Entrenched mindsets 
tied to the principles of individual liberty and religious freedom are 
contributing factors, said Jouet, the author of the book on 
polarization. They reinforce what he says is an anti-intellectual 
undercurrent that flows through American politics, which in recent 
decades has become stronger with the growth of Christian fundamentalism.

“Religion plays a much more important role in American politics than in other western democracies,” he said.

About 40 percent of Americans self-identify as evangelicals, according to a<a href="https://news.gallup.com/opinion/polling-matters/235208/things-know-evangelicals-america.aspx" target="_blank"> 2018 Gallup Poll.</a>

Hal Neukirch stood out at the 
Republican rally in El Dorado. Wearing a bright red “Kansas for Trump” 
hat, the retired aerospace worker said he’s backing the president even 
though it’s cost him friends — including one he’s known for 50 years — 
because he believes a Trump defeat would trigger “a massive swing to … 
socialism.”

“Some people have their heads in the sand to think that we wouldn’t go that way,” he said, “but I truly believe we will.”

At
 a GOP tour stop in Overland Park, Marian Stevens said she supports 
Trump because God chose him to “save this country.” His defeat, she 
said, would trigger the “end times”

“It would mean this country is asking to be removed from God’s grace and he would take his arms from around us,” Stevens said.

Democrats,
 independents and a smattering of moderate Republicans at a Bollier 
rally in Salina had different concerns if Trump is re-elected and 
Democrats don’t gain enough power in Congress to check him.

"I 
think our democracy is on the line," said Dee Williamston, a district 
leader for the United Methodist Church in Kansas. "Hands down, this is 
the most important election in the 21st century."

Williamston is 
Black, and pushed Bollier on whether she supports the Black Lives Matter
 movement and efforts to change policing. And overall, Williamston said,
 if Trump wins a second term, she believes there would be further 
attacks on voting rights and policies aimed at ending racial inequities.

“They have their head in the sand when it comes to issues around 
race, power and privilege,” Williamston said, referring to the president
 and Republicans in Congress.

But Marshall, whose father was the 
police chief of El Dorado for 25 years, decries “the violence” that he 
said Black Lives Matter protests triggered in some U.S. cities. In an 
interview, he said systemic racism and police violence against people of
 color might be a problem in some parts of the country, but not in 
Kansas.

“I don’t see that,” he said. “I just really, really don’t.”

There’s
 yet another divisive issue, brought back into the forefront with the 
U.S. Supreme Court nomination hearings, and that’s abortion. Pam 
McIntyre, a Bollier supporter from Salina, is concerned the Senate race 
could turn on the issue.

“I have some friends that are literally 
one-issue voters,” McIntyre said. “I try so desperately to get them to 
see that pro-life is so much more than just birthing a baby.”

Marshall, who is a retired obstetrician, and Republican political action committees are attacking Bollier in campaign ads for<a href="https://justfacts.votesmart.org/candidate/key-votes/119434/barbara-bollier/2/abortion" target="_blank"> voting against a 2015 measure</a> to ban a relatively rare procedure known as a dilation and evacuation abortion.

That
 measure was struck down in 2019 by the Kansas Supreme Court when it 
ruled that Kansans have a constitutional right to an abortion. And the 
Kansas House narrowly rejected a <a href="https://www.kcur.org/government/2020-02-07/four-kansas-republicans-stopped-their-partys-anti-abortion-bill-but-gop-says-its-not-over" target="_blank">proposed amendment </a>in the 2020 session that would have added language Constitution stating that there is no state right to abortion.

Bollier
 has consistently voted to protect Kansans’ abortion rights, saying 
women should be free to make their own choices in consultation with 
their doctors. A retired anesthesiologist, she also said it would have 
been malpractice for her to support an unconstitutional bill.

Fear of the other party fuels culture war in Kan. Senate race

Debra Lynn Belcher, 60, passed away October 24, 2020, at Hospice House of Hutchinson, Hutchinson, Kansas.

She was born September 8, 1960, in Norton to Robert and Mary Jo Sparkman Horesky.

Moving from Norton in 1990, she was a longtime area resident and 
worked at Larned State Hospital as a mental health developmental 
disability technician.

On March 10, 1993, she married Michael Belcher at Las Vegas, Nevada; he survives.

Other survivors include: mother, Mary Jo Horesky, Norton; three 
brothers, Robert Horesky Jr. and Jim Horesky, both of Norton, John 
(Tammy) Horesky, Russell; four nephews and one niece.

Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, October 28, 2020 at 
Larned Cemetery, Larned with Bob Sallee presiding. Visitation will be 
9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned.

John Stanley Laubhan, 81, of Russell, Kansas, passed away October 22, 2020, at the Wheatland Nursing Center in Russell.

John was born on September 25, 1939, in Hays, Kansas, the son of Georg E. and Irene L. (Meier) Laubhan.  He grew up in Russell and graduated from Russell High School in the class of 1957.  After high school he received training for auto mechanics at the U.S. Trade School in Kansas City, Missouri.  He eventually opened his own business and was owner and operator of Automatic Transmission Service in Russell for 50 years.  He was a longtime member of St. John Lutheran Church and the Elks Lodge, both of Russell.  He enjoyed square dancing, and was the head mechanic for the R.C. Williams Drag Race Team which won the Top Gas National Title in 1970 and 1971.

He is survived by his sister Janet Flickinger and husband Jon of Salina, Kansas; nieces, Jamie Farmer and husband Larry of Salina, Kansas and Julie Hudson and husband Gary of Georgetown, Texas; nephews, Jon Flickinger, Jr and wife Traci of Topeka, Kansas and Jered Flickinger of Austin, Texas; 18 grand and great-grand nieces and nephews; cousins, Liz Thielen of Russell, Kansas, Mike Laubhan, Larry Laubhan, Doug Schoenhals, Jim Schoenhals, Rick Schoenhals and Linda White; and a host of friends.

A funeral service to celebrate John’s life will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, October 28, 2020, at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell, Kansas.  A private burial will follow at the Russell City Cemetery in Russell.  Visitation will be from 9 A.M. to 5 P.M. on Tuesday, October 27, 2020, at the mortuary. On Thursday, October 22, 2020, our 
beautiful Mom and Grandma Pat passed to her eternal home in Heaven 
whereas faith has it she was embraced by her savior, Jesus. 
Patricia Kay was born in Great Bend, 
Kansas on October 11, 1938, to Dorothy E. (Bruntzel) and John T. Darcey. 
She was the eldest sister to her loving siblings Deanna and Johnny. Pat 
graduated from Radium High School in 1956 and then pursued education at 
the Dominican School of Nursing, although her career path later revealed
 a love of and natural talent for interior design. &nbsp;&nbsp;On November 17, 
1956, Pat was set up on a blind date to Joseph G. “Joe” Englert at his 
sister Millie’s wedding. Pat and Joe’s courtship began! When Joe was 
stationed out for military duties, he proposed to Pat through a love 
letter sent via the postal system, complete with her engagement ring 
enclosed! A September 7, 1957 marriage union in Seward, KS. at St. 
Francis Xavier Catholic Church followed. The couple loved and grew a 
family of four children. In God’s providence, eleven grandchildren and 
five great grandchildren all became part of Pat’s world to love. 
For 52 years Pat and Joe celebrated 
married life until Joe’s passing on August 4, 2009. Pat lived most of 
her life in Hays, Kansas, where she and Joe both contributed through 
careers and volunteer work for their community. &nbsp;Pat’s interests 
included &nbsp;CCD teacher for Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 
member of The Daughters of Isabella, retail store owner of Something 
Special Gift and Décor, showroom owner of Interiors by Pat, BID advisory
 board member, Hays Chamber of Commerce member, founder of Hays Bosom 
Buddies Cancer Support Group, support work toward the Knights of 
Columbus and Kansas National Guard, which her husband was member of 
both, arts and environment volunteer decorator for St. Francis Catholic 
Church in Munjor, volunteer seasonal decorating at Centennial Towers, 
&nbsp;which she loved doing and where she lived her final five years, and 
member of St. Francis Catholic Church. In her later years, she 
immersed herself in the hobby of painting tea towels, donating many to 
varied charitable organizations and to friends and her grandchildren. 
&nbsp;She loved all things creative, didn’t know a stranger, and had the 
kindest heart to all! 
She is survived by her sister: Deanna (Ed)
 Johnson, her brother: John Darcey, three children: Daniel Joseph 
Englert (Patty) of Belton, MO, Darcy Ann Mendenhall (Scott) of Platte 
City, MO,&nbsp;Theresa Marie Corbeille of Rochester, MI,&nbsp; her grandchildren: 
Jason (Meagan) Englert, Jared Englert, Scott Englert, Kyle (Cecily) and 
Connor Mendenhall, Cate Corbeille, Abby (Ryan Michael) Pfeifer, Ryan Joe
 (Polly) Pfeifer, Anna Pfeifer, Isabelle Pfeifer, Miranda (Tim) Abate, 
and Devin (Brittany) Engelhardt, her great grandchildren: Bailey 
Englert, Caleb Englert, Eloise Mendenhall, Ella Pfeifer, Liam Pfeifer,

Pat was preceded in death by her 
husband Joe, a daughter: Rosemary Kay Englert-Pfeifer, a granddaughter: 
Victoria Rose Pfeifer, her parents, brothers-in-law: John, Edward, and 
Leonard Englert, and Leonard Heeke, sisters-in-law: Esmerelda Darcey, 
Georgia Englert, Mary Englert, and Ann Heeke,&nbsp;and nieces: Denise 
Johnson-George and Esther Rose McMurtrie.

Pat’s family wishes to acknowledge and 
thank HaysMed for their utmost care given for the 30 days Pat was 
hospitalized till her passing, including ICU, Acute Care, hospital 
doctors, food and cleaning service, and all other departments that gave 
professional and compassionate care.

Patricia K. 'Pat' Englert

Vada Irene (Colip) Randall passed away Wednesday, October 21, 2020, 
at Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital, WaKeeney, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born
 to George L. and Bertha (Garrison) Colip on March 10, 1927, at the 
family home in rural Norton County.&nbsp;

Vada graduated from Norton High School in 1944.&nbsp; She&nbsp;married Cloyce 
D. Randall on September 7, 1946.&nbsp; In 1948 they moved to Gove, Kansas and
 had three sons,&nbsp;Robert L.,

Donald L. and Randy L.&nbsp; Vada was secretary to Superintendent of WHS 
School District, and Clerk to the Board of Education of USD 292.&nbsp; 
Cloyce, Vada and Randy moved to WaKeeney in 1978.&nbsp; Vada worked for 
Commercial National Bank in data processing in WaKeeney.&nbsp; She retired as
 Manager December 1990.&nbsp; Vada spent her retirement years volunteering on
 various committees in the community.&nbsp; She also enjoyed line dancing.&nbsp;

She is survived by her sons, Robert and (Elizabeth), Manhattan, 
Kansas., Donald and (Patricia) Gove, Kansas.,&nbsp;and Randy and (Joann) 
Wichita, Kansas; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandsons.&nbsp;

A private graveside memorial service will be held at a later date, at the Jennings Cemetery, Jennings, Kansas.

Vada Irene Randall

Longtime Goodland, KS resident Maria Jesus Vasquez, 92, passed away on Wednesday, October 21, 2020, at the St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood, CO.

Maria was born on November 21, 1927, in Comstock, Texas to Gavino and Santiaga (Sandoval) Vasquez.&nbsp; She was one of eight children.&nbsp; She attended school in Texas up through the 9th grade. &nbsp;

On October 25, 1954, she married Natividad Vasquez in Tahoka, Texas.&nbsp; To this union, eight children were born.

Maria enjoyed cooking for her family, sewing, crocheting, knitting and doing word finds.&nbsp; Most of all she enjoyed just spending time with her family.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, one son, two daughters, three brothers, four sisters and one grandson.

She is survived by her five children; Janie Juarez of Plainview, TX, Raul (Susan) Vasquez of Gladstone, Oregon, Jose Vasquez (Becky) of Olathe, KS, Dulci (Dennis) Fyfe of Goodland, KS and Jr. (Kerri) Vasquez also of Goodland.&nbsp; She is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, October 28, 2020 at 10:30 AM MT at the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Goodland with Father Norbert Dlabal officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow in the Goodland Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 27, 2020 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM MT at Koons-Russell Funeral Home in Goodland with a Parish Rosary to be recited at 7:00 PM, also at the funeral home.

Rebecca “Becky” Marie Anderson, 63, passed away October 22, 2020, at 
her home in Great Bend. She was born November 18, 1956, at Great Bend, 
to Carl &amp; Nancy (Goetting) Bertram. She married Kenny Kuhn in 1980 
and they later divorced.

A lifetime Great Bend resident, Rebecca was a sales person for over 
30 years at J&amp;L Coins. She was a wonderful cook. She loved her cats 
and dogs, but especially loved spending time with her children and 
grandchildren.

Survivors include, a son, Christopher Kuhn (fiancé Nika Stoks) of 
Rochester, Minn.; a daughter, Bonnie Kuhn and (Eric Zecha) of Great 
Bend; a daughter in heart, Janell Tracey of Great Bend; a brother, Ted 
Bertram and (Sherry) of Kansas City, Mo.; two sisters, Sarah Richley 
(Craig) of Lee Summit, Mo., and Melissa Esfeld (Arturo Ferrel) of Great 
Bend; eight grandchildren, Paxton Redetzke, Jacob Horner, Lexi Zecha, 
Skyler Zecha, Holley Zecha, Makayla Kuhn, Ashlin Kuhn, and Chance Kuhn; a
 nephew, Bradley Esfeld; and a niece, Holly Esfeld. She was preceded in 
death by her parents; and a brother, Jerry Bertram.&nbsp;

Cremation has taken place and the family will greet friends from 1:00

TOPEKA—The Kansas Supreme Court is accepting public comment on a proposed rule that will require foreign language court interpreters to complete a free online orientation program before providing services in Kansas courts. Language in proposed&nbsp;<a href="https://kansascourts.org/l/nFfjmVyHNqwyy6f2P95qyvlWNh_u66inrnTZKG-Asbo" target="_blank">Supreme Court Rule 1705</a>&nbsp;will establish a requirement that foreign language court interpreters complete the Kansas Judicial Branch Court Interpreter Orientation before providing interpretation or translation service in a district court, although a judge can make an exception in the case of an emergency. The free web-based orientation provides an overview of interpretation skills, best practices, ethics, and the Kansas court system. Completing the orientation will become a requirement for foreign language interpreters six months after the proposed rule takes effect. The proposed rule does not apply to sign language interpreters or interpreters who provide interpretation services from a remote location outside of Kansas. Under the proposed rule, interpreters must provide a copy of their certificate of orientation completion to a judicial district's local language access coordinator. The certificate will not substitute for a judicial determination of an interpreter's qualifications or for taking an interpreter's oath. The proposed rule also creates new duties for local language access coordinators and Office of Judicial Administration (OJA) staff, including noting and retaining interpreters' certificates of completion. Orientation registration information will be provided on the Kansas judicial branch website.  </figure>OJATOPEKA—The Kansas Supreme Court is accepting public comment on a proposed rule that will require foreign language court interpreters to complete a free online orientation program before providing services in Kansas courts. Language in proposed&nbsp;<a href="https://kansascourts.org/l/nFfjmVyHNqwyy6f2P95qyvlWNh_u66inrnTZKG-Asbo" target="_blank">Supreme Court Rule 1705</a>&nbsp;will establish a requirement that foreign language court interpreters complete the Kansas Judicial Branch Court Interpreter Orientation before providing interpretation or translation service in a district court, although a judge can make an exception in the case of an emergency. The free web-based orientation provides an overview of interpretation skills, best practices, ethics, and the Kansas court system. Completing the orientation will become a requirement for foreign language interpreters six months after the proposed rule takes effect. The proposed rule does not apply to sign language interpreters or interpreters who provide interpretation services from a remote location outside of Kansas. Under the proposed rule, interpreters must provide a copy of their certificate of orientation completion to a judicial district's local language access coordinator. The certificate will not substitute for a judicial determination of an interpreter's qualifications or for taking an interpreter's oath. The proposed rule also creates new duties for local language access coordinators and Office of Judicial Administration (OJA) staff, including noting and retaining interpreters' certificates of completion. Orientation registration information will be provided on the Kansas judicial branch website. Donald Fry, 89, of Sharon Springs, KS, passed away October 20, 2020.&nbsp;

Don entered this world on July 10, 1931 in McMillen, MO, born to Lyman and Ina Fry. He was raised in western Kansas, graduating from Wallace County High School. After graduation, he spent several decades traveling across the United States and throughout the world, before returning to his hometown.&nbsp;

He was a taxi driver, raced cars, flew helicopters and worked at the Flight Research Center at NASA. He proudly served in the Korean War as a Radioman Third Class in the United States Navy. He worked as an aircraft mechanic in Vietnam and Iran before eventually returning to western Kansas with his family.

After moving back to Sharon Springs, he worked as an employee of USD 241, a power plant operator, and a farmer. He was happiest when he was working on his farm, spending time with his family, reading or calling a round of bingo at the VFW. &nbsp;

Don was preceded in death by his parents, Lyman and Ina Fry, and a sister, Colleen Barber. He is survived by his beloved wife Hao, his two children, Russell Fry and his wife Leslie; and Michael Fry and his wife Tricia. He has four grandchildren, including Ethan, Sam and Will Fry, and Peyton Fry. His surviving siblings include Arlene Henderson, Orval Fry, Fred Fry, Emelie McAlister, Linda Gates and Karen Haynes.

There will be a private family ceremony at a later date.&nbsp;

Memorials may be designated to the Wallace County Community Care Center and may be sent to Koons-Russell Funeral Home, 211 N. Main Ave., Goodland, KS 67735..

TOPEKA, KS – Veterinary staff at the Topeka Zoo and Conservation Center made the difficult decision to euthanize a 16-year-old African Lion named Avus Friday morning, according to a media release.

 “Avus had been experiencing agerelated issues for some time.” said Zoo Director Brendan Wiley. “Earlier this week we noticed a significant decline in his well-being. We did a comprehensive exam and tried new medication but did not see an improvement in his condition. Today is a sad day for our extended zoo family. Avus led an impactful life at our zoo, inspiring guests to care more about wildlife and conservation.”

Avus was born at the Henry Vilas Zoo on October 14, 2004. Following a recommendation from the AZA’s Species Survival Plan, Avus came to Topeka in the summer of 2006 to pair with lionesses Zuri and Asante. In 2007 Avus and Asante had one offspring, Adia, who in turn provided the pair with two grandsons that live in other AZA zoos. Avus was able to see his home at the Topeka Zoo transform with the opening of Camp Cowabunga in 2018. Zuri and Asante are also classified as geriatric at the ages of sixteen years as well. In the wild, the lifespan of lions is a range between 12-15 years of age.

Avus was an easy favorite to staff and guests alike. He had the most amazing eyes and a face framing mane. He was very laid back and known for pretending he didn't hear zookeepers when it was time to go inside so he could get a few more minutes of sleep. Avus enjoyed enrichment like cologne and taco seasoning, and was excited about participating in training sessions.

 16-year-old African lion euthanized at Kansas zoo

Lilly Marlene Zeman, age 85, of WaKeeney, KS, passed away October 18, 2020. She was born November 16, 1934 in Quinter, KS, to John and Ruby (Jarboe) Jamison. She was a graduate of Quinter High School. Lilly was a fierce fighter, having beaten breast cancer twice, as well as battling lung cancer for over 2 years.&nbsp;

On February 10, 1956, she was united in marriage to Frank “Junior” Zeman in Quinter, and they enjoyed 43 years of marriage together. They lived on a farm in Trego county for a few years before buying a home in WaKeeney where they raised 3 children together. Lilly worked as a dietary aide for 35 years in WaKeeney at the Lutheran home before going on to work another 24 years as a senior companion. Following the death of her husband in 1999, she moved to Keeney Village, where she lived for 20 years. In her spare time, Lilly liked to crochet her hangers, work on her word search and puzzle books, and play dice. She was also a collector of many angels.&nbsp;

Lilly well be dearly missed and remember by so many friends and family, including her children Joquetta (Robert) Roth of Lakewood, CO, Stephen Zeman of Quinter, Kevin Zeman of WaKeeney, and Debbie (Brett) Rucas of Hays, KS; grandchildren Jessica (Russell) Wood of Ogallah, KS, Amanda (Cody) Hamilton of Morland, KS, Cortney Wright of Hays, and Kerbi (Jeremy) Jacobson of Littleton, CO; great-grandchildren, Brendon Wright, Hannah and Breanna Wood of Ogallah, Caleb and Tristan Hamilton of Morland, Haylee and Tanner Finnesy, Mikah Chaffee and Kira Plante of Hays, and Lanie and Micha Jacobson of Littleton; sister Myrna Prewitt of Beloit, KS; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.&nbsp;

Inurnment will be at the Kansas Veterans cemetery, in WaKeeney. Memorial services will be held at a later date.

Shirley Ann McGee, 84, passed away October 22, 2020 at Diversicare of Larned.

She was born October 23, 1935 in Linn, Kansas. The daughter of Vergil
 Samuel and Edna Marie Peterson Hanna, she was one of fifteen children.

A longtime area resident she worked at Alco in Larned. She was a 
member of the VFW Auxiliary, and enjoyed fishing, bingo, embroidery, and
 going to the casinos. She loved cats, especially her own, and she was a
 collector of many things.

On July 18, 1959 she married Kenneth “Bud” McGee in San Bernardino, California; he preceded her in death on October 11, 2002.

Survivors include: two sons, Tony (Paula) McGee, Moore, Oklahoma, 
Randy McGee, Wichita; daughter, Janda Van Loenen, Lane, Kansas; five 
grandchildren: Terry McGee, Megan McGee, Jeff Smith, Donnie Van Loenen, 
and Gayle Van Loenen-Golden; twenty-five great grandchildren, and one 
great-great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday, October 26, 2020 at
 Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. Private burial will be in Larned Cemetery.

BARTON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a violent attack on a woman in Great Bend and have made an arrest.

On October 19, the Barton County Sheriff’s Office became aware of an alleged battery and rape case that occurred October 17, in the southeast part of Great Bend and involved a 42-year-old woman, according to Sheriff Brian Bellendir. The victim did not report the alleged crime until October 19.

After conducting numerous interviews and follow-up investigations, detectives identified a suspect as Tanner J. Cox&nbsp; 32, of Hoisington.

Just after midnight Friday, deputies arrested Cox in a business parking lot on E. 10th Street in Great Bend

&nbsp;He is being held on requested charges of attempted murder in the 2nd degree, rape and violation of a protective order. Cox is being held in lieu of a $500,000 bond, according to Bellendir.

WICHITA— Pope Francis has become the first pontiff to endorse same-sex civil unions. The comments drew cheers from gay Catholics and demands for clarification from conservatives, given the Vatican’s official teaching on the issue.

Bishop Carl Kemme of the Catholic Diocese of Wichita issued a statement on the Diocese website regarding Pope Francis' remarks.&nbsp;

"As reported October 21, 2020, Pope Francis is being reported to have expressed support of same-sex civil unions in a documentary entitled “Francesco,” in order to express pastoral concern for individuals and groups who experience discrimination as a result of sexual orientation. 

I have not seen that documentary nor the full text of what Pope Francis reportedly said and in the absence of clarification from the Vatican, I encourage the people of God to prayerful serenity. 

While the Pope’s comments may engender a certain degree of alarm and confusion, it is good to &nbsp;point our attention to the Catechism of the Catholic Church which clearly proclaims that marriage is between one man and one woman, as indicated by natural law and biblical truth. 

The Pope is not altering doctrine, nor is he legitimizing homosexual acts, which also the Catechism teaches are gravely sinful. I believe that Pope Francis is reminding us of the respect and dignity all people deserve, including those with same sex attraction."

Bishop&nbsp;Gerald Vincke of Salina Diocese <a href="https://salinadiocese.org/news-and-updates/statement-on-pope-francis-comments-on-same-sex-civil-unions/">issued a similar statement.</a>&nbsp; The Catholic Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph did not <a href="https://kcsjcatholic.org/2020/10/francis-comments/">issue a statement </a>except to write on their web site, "We are aware of Pope Francis’ recent comments on same-sex civil unions. Since the comments were in the context of a documentary and not in the form of expressing an official teaching of the Catholic Church, we will await an official response and clarification from the Vatican before offering further comment from the diocese."

The Pope's remarks came in the documentary which premiered at the Rome Film Festival. In the documentary, the pope says: “Homosexual people have the right to be in a family. 

They are children of God." Francis says a civil union law is needed because "that way they are legally covered.” While archbishop of Buenos Aires, Francis endorsed civil unions for gay couples as an alternative to same-sex marriages but had never come out publicly in favor of civil unions as pope.

Kan. Bishops respond to Pope's same-sex civil union comments

James Kenneth Riddle, son of Randal and Elsie (Winters) Riddle, was born January 30, 1936, in Mt. Pleasant, Texas, and passed away at the Andbe Home in Norton, Kansas, on October 16, 2020, at the age of 84.

James grew up in Mt. Pleasant and attended the local schools.  As an adult, James made his home in Ft. Worth, Texas, where he worked for a company that manufactured dairy products.  He worked his way up and was shipping supervisor for the transport of those products at the time of his retirement.  On July 4, 2002, James and Nila (Davis) Dawson were married at the St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Ft. Worth.  They made their home in Ft. Worth until recently when they moved to Norton.

James was a member of the St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Ft. Worth, and had been attending Trinity Episcopal Church since moving to Norton.

Survivors include:  his loving wife, Nila Riddle, of their home in Norton; three daughters, Audrey Raines and Sharron Jasso, of Texas, and Shelley Hendershot, of Delaware; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

James was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife of 43 years, Alice Whitt Riddle.

A memorial service was held at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Norton on Sunday, October 18, 2020.

Loran J. Jayne, 74, of Ellis, KS, passed away October 12, 2020, at the Good Samaritan Society of Ellis. Loran was born on April 11, 1946, to George and Katherine (Croute) Jayne. While growing up, his family lived in many different places, with Florida being his favorite. On May 28, 1966, he married Gloria Schoenberger in Ellis, KS. Loran was a man of many trades, but he is remembered as a self-employed driver for King of the Road. Together with Gloria, they were able to travel around the United States delivering campers. He loved playing his guitar, singing, bowling with friends, and fishing. He especially enjoyed spending time with all of his family. Loran is survived by his daughters, Angela (Dave) Hickey and Sonya (Bryan) Gottschalk, all of Ellis, KS; his brother Larry of Kingman, KS; grandchildren Shelby (Aaron) Herl of Hays, KS, Sidney (Lane) Carpenter of Overland Park, KS, and Cody Hickey of San Diego, CA. JoAnn (Coulter) Mauck passed away, Thursday, October 15, 2020, at the 
Sheridan County Health Complex Long Term Care. 

JoAnn was born August 6,
 1931, in Rural Sheridan County, Kansas to Charles and Mary (Husted) 
Coulter. She was raised on the farm with her five siblings. JoAnn 
attended Whitehall School through eighth grade and graduated from Hoxie 
High School in 1949. Following graduation, she went to work as a 
secretary at the Sheridan County Court House. Following a whirlwind 
courtship, Laverne (Duffer) Mauck won JoAnn’s heart and they were 
married on August 22, 1950, at the Presbyterian Church in Hoxie, Kansas.
 After they were married, they moved to the farm where they raised 
their family and lived until they moved to town a few years ago. They 
were blessed with five children, Rex, Roger, Brena, Karen, and Rodney. 
Duffer and JoAnn just celebrated their 70th anniversary.
 JoAnn was very involved with her family. They were the loves of her
 life. She served as a Girl Scout Leader and a Den Mother for Cub 
Scouts and enjoyed going to the activities her children participated in.
 JoAnn’s family was so important to her. She enjoyed all her children, 
grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Some of her favorite things to 
do were sew, go for walks and look for Indian artifacts (she even has a 
site accredited to her name). Duffer and JoAnn traveled 
internationally, and fossil hunting was a favorite pastime shared by 
Duffer and JoAnn. JoAnn was a member of the McGraw Methodist Church, 
the Sheridan County Hospital Auxiliary, and Friends of the Cottonwood 
Ranch. 
 JoAnn is survived by her husband, Duffer Mauck of Hoxie, Kansas, 
sons, Rex Mauck (Dorothea) of Longmont, Florida and Roger Mauck 
(Dolores) of Hoxie, Kansas; daughters, Brena Mauck of Hays, Kansas and 
Karen Billinger (Ed Kimminau) of Dodge City, Kansas; grandchildren, Dr. 
Michelle Pope (Jason), Melissa Small (Richie), Tate Mauck (Heather),

Robert Lee Kreutzer, age 85, passed away at the Greeley County Long Term Care on Tuesday, October 20, 2020.&nbsp; He was born on June 1, 1935, in Beeler, Kansas, the son of Frank and Helen Dreher Kreutzer. He was a member of the St. Mary Catholic Church on Marienthal, Kansas.&nbsp; He worked as a mechanic and equipment operator. On December 29, 1954, he married Genevieve (Jean) M. Kreutzer.&nbsp; She passed away on July 9, 2013. Survivors include: Two Sons Jim Kreutzer of Leoti, Kansas Curtis and Lanna Kreutzer of Leoti, Kansas Two Daughters Faye Kreutzer Ford of Hutchinson, Kansas Kay &amp; Svend Kjaer of Edman, Oklahoma Six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers, and four sisters.

He was born Feb. 6, 1945, in Oceola, IA, to Darold Ashford and Letha 
(Suits) Ashford. He joined the Navy in 1964 and was discharged in 1966. 
Darold married Susan Sutton in 1967 and had one daughter,Leanna Ashford, of Atwood. 
He was preceded in death by both parents and one sister Linda Ryan, of Atwood. 
He leaves behind his loving wife, Susan; daughter Leanna; two grandsons,
 Raymond (Whitney) Ashford, Atwood, and Brandon (Jessica) Ashford,

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump posted his full, unedited interview with “60 Minutes” on Facebook before the show’s scheduled Sunday broadcast.

The footage shows Trump growing increasingly prickly as CBS anchor Lesley Stahl presses him on a host of topics, including his response to the coronavirus pandemic, his slipping support among suburban women, the lack of masks at his rallies, and the “Obamacare” replacement plan he has long promised but failed to unveil.

“Look at the bias, hatred and rudeness on behalf of 60 Minutes and CBS,” Trump wrote Thursday as he tweeted the Facebook link. And he again preemptively criticized the moderator of Thursday night’s final presidential debate.

Throughout the interview, Trump returns to attacks on Joe Biden’s son, based on an unconfirmed New York Post report, and accuses the media of being too soft on his Democratic rival.

As Stahl comments at one point that Trump is offering attack after attack, Trump responds: “It’s not attack, it’s defense. It’s defense against attacks.”

“I’m defending myself and I’m defending the institute of the presidency,” he said.

As Trump continued to throw unsubstantiated allegations at Biden and former President Barack Obama, Stahl tried to explain: “This is ‘60 Minutes’ and we can’t put on things we can’t verify.”

But Trump continued to criticize the mainstream media.

“Leslie, you’re discrediting yourself,” he said.

The interview began on a tense footing as Stahl asked the president as the camera started rolling, “Are you ready for some tough questions?” and only grew more testy.

At the end of the nearly 40 minutes, Trump complained: “Are you ready for tough questions. That’s no way to talk. That’s no way to talk.”

“You’re so negative,” he later commented.

Trump eventually cut the interview short and declined to appear with Vice President Mike Pence.

“That’s enough. Let’s go,” he said.

CBS News called the White House’s decision “unprecedented,” but said the interview would air Sunday as planned.

“The White House’s unprecedented decision to disregard their agreement with CBS News and release their footage will not deter 60 MINUTES from providing its full, fair and contextual reporting which presidents have participated in for decades,” the network said in a statement.

“60 MINUTES,” it continued, “is widely respected for bringing its hallmark fairness, deep reporting and informative context to viewers each week. Few journalists have the presidential interview experience Lesley Stahl has delivered over her decades as one of the premier correspondents in America and we look forward to audiences seeing her third interview with President Trump and subsequent interview with Vice President Pence this weekend.”

Orville R. Bowers, son of Leora Bryant, was born January 11, 1943, in 
rural Sycamore, KS in Montgomery County and passed away at the Andbe 
Home in Norton, KS on October 19, 2020, at the age of 77.

Orville grew up in Sycamore and Ottawa, Kansas. He served in the United States Navy.

On March 24, 1978, he married Marilyn Magill. Together, they lived 
mostly in the Hoisington and Great Bend communities, where Orville 
worked for the Railroad.&nbsp; Following his retirement the couple moved to 
Almena, KS.&nbsp; They helped raise two of their grandchildren, Brandon and 
Dalton McDowell in that home.&nbsp;&nbsp;
