Schedule change in refuse/recycling pick up in Hays for Thanksgiving holiday

HAYS, Kan. - The 12th-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team moved to 5-0 on the year after a wire-to-wire victory over Tabor College Tuesday evening inside Gross Memorial Coliseum, 93-39.

Nine different Tigers combined for 32 assists on 40 made baskets, the most assists in a game for the Tigers in five years (34 vs. St. Mary, 11/25/19). Seven different players recorded at least two assists, including 10 from Brooke Loewe&nbsp;and eight from Maddy Powell. Loewe's 10 dimes are the most for a Tiger since January 2022 (Jaden Hobbs, 10, vs. Lincoln, 1/8/22).

Fort Hays State shot 56.3 percent from the floor (40-of-71), its best shooting percentage in nearly two years (56.4 percent at Lincoln, 1/2/23). The Tigers' 93 points are their most in a game since they scored 100 against Rogers State four years ago (2/20/20).

One minute into the fourth quarter Katie DeGarmo&nbsp;collected her seventh rebound of the game, giving the graduate student her 1,000th career rebound in a Tiger uniform. She is just the second player in program history to surpass that milestone, and is also the second to surpass that plateau in both points and rebounds. Earlier in the night the Maize, Kan. native moved into third place on the all-time scoring list at FHSU, now with 1,800 career points.

Oliva Hollenbeck&nbsp;won the opening tip for the Tigers, giving DeGarmo the chance to open the scoring with a 3-pointer. Tabor later scored on its second possession to make it 3-2 before the Tigers pulled away, scoring the next 13 points to race in front 16-2. Hollenbeck scored six points during the run, with Kate Dilsaver&nbsp;adding five points including a 3-pointer.

The Tigers eventually led by 18 after 10 minutes, 26-8, before Telexa Weeter&nbsp;helped push the lead to 30 by halftime, 51-21. The sophomore scored 10 points in the final three minutes of the half, including a pair of 3-pointers to give her a team-high 16 points on 7-of-8 shooting in the first half.

Fort Hays State continued to pour it on, scoring 42 points in the second half while holding the Bluejays to just six field goals after the break. Hollenbeck was 6-for-6 in the second half, totaling 12 points and four steals in just eight minutes of action.

Weeter finished with a game-high 25 points, setting a new career high for a third-consecutive game. Hollenbeck contributed 24 points, six rebounds and five steals, giving FHSU multiple players with 20 or more points for the first time since January 2023.&nbsp;DeGarmo finished with 16 points, a game-high seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. Fort Hays State limited the Bluejays to just 24.1 percent from the floor (14-of-58).

The Tigers will continue their run of three games in five days this weekend in Colorado when they travel to take on Regis on Friday (Nov. 29, 6 p.m./5 p.m. MT) and Colorado School of Mines on Saturday (Nov. 30, 4 p.m./3 p.m. MT).&nbsp;&nbsp;

🏀 No. 12 Tiger women cruise past Tabor College

A Hays man sustained injuries while riding his motorcycle after a vehicle turned into his path on Nov. 16 in Hays.

According to Hays Police Lieutenant Brandon Wright, a 39-year-old motorcyclist sustained a leg and head injury in a collision with a gray 2005 GMC Envoy.

At 11:16 p.m. on Nov. 16, in the 1800 block of Vine Street, a 49-year-old woman from Victoria was in the southbound left-turn lane as the motorcyclist traveled northbound.

The female driver turned left into Wendy's when she crossed the path of the oncoming motorcycle, resulting in a collision.

Wright said the motorcyclist was transported to the hospital for treatment. He was not wearing a helmet.

The SUV driver was cited for failing to yield the right of way.

About 2,500 Hays area youth attended the game. The Tigers produced their most points in a game so far this season, while four players reached double figures scoring.

Kaleb Hammeke nearly had a double-double performance with a team-high 17 points and nine assists. The nine assists tied his career high, which he has reached three times now. Kyle Grill&nbsp;finished with 13 points, Shaun Riley&nbsp;had 12 and a team-high nine rebounds, and Aiden McDowell&nbsp;added a season-high 11 points. Muhamed Kante&nbsp;also had a new season high in points with nine. FHSU shot over 50 percent from the field for the second-straight game, finishing at 52.5 overall (31-of-59). The Tigers hit 10 3-point field goals, making 45.5 percent of their attempts beyond the arc.

🏀 Tigers cruise past Central Christian in Youth Day matinee

The Fort Hays State women's basketball team climbed in both national polls released Tuesday, jumping five spots to No. 12 in the latest WBCA NCAA Division II Coaches Poll and up two slots to No. 15 in the D2CSC Media Poll.

The Tigers managed to jump in the rankings despite not playing any games since the last release one week ago. Fort Hays State picked up 299 points in the voting process of the coaches poll, up from 236 a week ago, while the Tigers gained 145 points in the media poll compared to 136 last Tuesday.

Fort Hays State is now the highest-ranked team in the MIAA in the coaches poll, moving one spot past No. 13 Pittsburg State. Northwest Missouri State is ranked 15th in this week's coaches ranks, giving the MIAA three teams in the top 15. Only one other conference has two teams in the top 15, while the MIAA is the only league with three-such teams.

The MIAA also has three teams in the top 15 of the media poll, with Pittsburg State sitting at No. 6, Northwest Missouri State ranked No. 8 and FHSU slotted 15th.The Tigers are 3-1 all-time when ranked No. 12 in the coaches poll. This is the third time the Tigers have been listed at No. 12 in the coaches poll, and the first since the preseason poll of the 2018-19 season. The Tigers went 2-0 as the 12th-ranked team in November 2018 after going 1-1 when ranked No. 12 in the 2016 MIAA Championship tournament.

Fort Hays State has now been listed in the coaches top 25 in 106 separate releases. The Tigers are 161-43 all-time when ranked.

The Tigers will play three times in the next five days beginning tonight when they host Tabor beginning at 6 p.m.

Fort Hays State picked up 299 points in the voting process of the coaches poll, up from 236 a week ago, while the Tigers gained 145 points in the media poll compared to 136 last Tuesday.Fort Hays State is now the highest-ranked team in the MIAA in the coaches poll, moving one spot past No. 13 Pittsburg State. Northwest Missouri State is ranked 15th in this week's coaches ranks, giving the MIAA three teams in the top 15. Only one other conference has two teams in the top 15, while the MIAA is the only league with three-such teams.The MIAA also has three teams in the top 15 of the media poll, with Pittsburg State sitting at No. 6, Northwest Missouri State ranked No. 8 and FHSU slotted 15th.The Tigers are 3-1 all-time when ranked No. 12 in the coaches poll. This is the third time the Tigers have been listed at No. 12 in the coaches poll, and the first since the preseason poll of the 2018-19 season. HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State had five players named to the D2CCA Men's Soccer All-Central Region Team for 2024. First-team honors went to&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-soccer/roster/elias-ovelar-semeniuk/7935">Elias Ovelar Semeniuk</a>&nbsp;(F),&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-soccer/roster/tadhg-walsh/7942">Tadhg Walsh</a>&nbsp;(MF), and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-soccer/roster/marcos-german/8347">Marcos German</a>&nbsp;(D). Second-team selections were&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-soccer/roster/bryce-dickerson/8344">Bryce Dickerson</a>&nbsp;(MF) and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-soccer/roster/jeremiah-johnson/8553">Jeremiah Johnson</a>&nbsp;(D).

Semeniuk finished the season as the team leader in goals scored with nine. He had 21 points for the season, adding three assists to his goal total. Semeniuk was an All-GAC First Team selection this season and is now a two-time all-conference selection overall. He led the team in shots on goal (22) and game-winning goals (4). He is now a two-time D2CCA All-Central Region selection after a second-team pick last year.

Walsh finished the year with 25 points to lead Fort Hays State. He set a new single-season record at FHSU for assists with 15. He entered the NCAA Tournament tied for the national lead in assists with Frederic Benedix of Coker University. Walsh added five goals to his 15 assists for the season. He was an All-GAC First Team selection for the second-straight year and is now a three-time all-conference selection overall. This is the second-straight year Walsh was named to the D2CCA All-Central Region First Team.

German completed the 2024 season with 17 points, producing four goals and nine assists. He led the team in shots with 48, while playing the fourth-most minutes on the team (1,541). German was an All-GAC First Team selection at defender.

Dickerson finished the year with 11 points as a midfielder, notching three goals and five assists. He played the second-most minutes on the team with 1,641, while attempting 41 shots. He was a second-team selection on the All-GAC team this year as well.

Johnson was a strong addition for the Tigers this year at defender, providing 13 points with five goals and three assists. He ranked third on the team in minutes played with 1,618. ⚽ Five Tigers named to D2CCA All-Central Region team

Dale L. Wing, 89, of Hays, Kansas, passed away on Saturday,
November 23, 2024 at HaysMed.

Dale was born to parents Lester and Emma Mae (King) Wing on
November 14, 1935, in Cimarron, Kansas. The family relocated to Hays, where he
graduated from Hays High School and Fort Hays State University. He worked for
the Kansas Department of Health and Environment and as Ellis County
Environmental Zoning Administrator.

Dale married Mary Ann Erbert on November 23, 1957. They had five

He is survived by his immediate family, his brother David (Doris)
Wing, and sisters-in-law Alice Wing and Sharon Wing. He was predeceased by his
parents, brothers Jimmy, Bill and Kenny Wing, and his son-in-law Robert Von
Hoene.

In his heart and in his spare time, Dale was a cowboy. He spent
every moment he could pursuing that passion. From his musings: "There was
a tempo of tranquility as the filly's stride covered the ground in a rolling
motion.&nbsp;Hoofbeats resounded
hollowly on the prairie sod. Saddle leather rubbed out that special sound that
only comes from the flexing of a saddle in cadence with a horse's stride. The
ache of mind and body seem to melt away as nature's peace wraps around you and
you drift from man's world."

We are grateful to the staff at HaysMed for the kind care provided
to him over the last months.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish to honor his life are asked to
make donations to local charities that aid citizens of Hays.

Dale was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.

Environmental Zoning Administrator.Dale married Mary Ann Erbert on November 23, 1957. They had five

In March of 2020, I was diagnosed with level 3 colon cancer.

Dr. Grove was persistent and so was able to schedule my surgery just before the operating room was closed due to the pandemic. Dr. Grove was able to perform the surgery without having to do a colostomy.

After my successful surgery, I have been under the care of Dr. Rodriguez and Dr. Grove. After four and a half years, I am still cancer-free.

Because of Dr. Grove and Dr. Rodriguez, I am 88 years old, alive and well.

These two physicians are the most knowledgeable, caring and giving individuals I have ever known. Dr. Grove and Dr. Rodriguez are exactly what our rural Kansas health care services need.

I was very saddened and upset to hear they are leaving HaysMed.

LETTER: Reader saddened physicians leaving

I was told to open Hays Post to see yet another doctor leaving Hays Medical Center—Dr. Robert Rodriguez.&nbsp; Not just a doctor but an oncologist who specializes in shedding some light on those who face the dirty “c” word.

The ones who beg for mercy and hope when they have nowhere else to turn.&nbsp; I know because I was one of those people.&nbsp; I don’t know how else to express my gratitude to Dr. Rodriguez other than thank you for being on my team. 

The Grove-Rodriguez team was the most down-to-earth, no-BS doctors that I could have hoped for.&nbsp; The surgeon and the oncologist went hand-in-hand, and they were the best. 

Some patients ask their doctor, “Is this the treatment you would want if you were in my shoes?” My friend, Robert, always would say, “If you were my mother, my wife, my daughter…I would proceed this way." I believed him. 

The 23 times I sat in that God-awful, most uncomfortable damn chair, I knew he always had my back. He was in my corner, lacing up my gloves.&nbsp; Thank you, Dr. Robert Rodriguez, for taking care of me! I have known you for six of the nine years you have been here, and I am better for it.

I would like to ask the good people of the community how do we fix this problem. We let someone come in who claims that they have the skills to run a hospital but do not listen to those who are really running the hospital (doctors, nurses, technicians, and many more).

&nbsp; We have lost 20 health care providers in the last year. How many more can we afford to lose? Not to mention, those who leave are banned from serving us through a nearby community. Non-compete clause? Is that a word that should even be used in health care?

This is not a retail business where goods are being sold.&nbsp; Lives are on the line!&nbsp; Shouldn’t we have more say in the health care of our community?&nbsp; We have public city, county and school board meetings—why not for health care (the reason we exist)?

Instead, there is a secret floor that none of the public knows about where the meetings are held in quiet. If this issue were only one or two disgruntled doctors leaving, I could understand that; however, this has been a small exodus of very important and qualified professionals in our community.

Bob Page, president and chief executive officer of the University of Kansas Health System, is the one who hired Eddie Herrman in September 2017. Since KU is no longer part of HaysMed, who does Eddie Herrman answer to now? The board? His buddies? I would very much like to know the answer to that question, as I am sure the citizens of Hays and surrounding communities would also.

I pray that those responsible for dismantling the infrastructure of our health care system are never diagnosed with a catastrophic disease where one day you need these people that you have chased away to save your life or someone in your family!&nbsp;

Fort Hays State Men's Basketball will take on Central Christian in the second-annual Youth Day at Gross Memorial Coliseum on Tuesday. Students, staff and administration from USD 489, TMP Junior High, Holy Family Elementary, Ellis and Victoria will be in attendance. FHSU and Central Christian met in the first edition of this event last year. Tipoff is set for 12 p.m. at Gross Memorial Coliseum.

Last year's event was very popular and provided one of the loudest home court advantages of the season. On Monday night, the Hays USD 489 school board approved the Lincoln Elementary School building sale to Turn-Key Property Solutions for $850,000.

After the school board meeting on Monday, Developer Michael Graham said he plans to renovate the school into about 26 to 28 one- and two-bedroom apartments. He said the apartments will be moderate-income housing. He also plans to build on the property surrounding the school.

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/1fd1f9bd-1629-4a43-9f0a-808009a42b52">The school district accepted sealed bids for the sale of the 100-year-old school, which will close as an elementary school at the end of the school year.</a>

The closure is part of a series of bond-funded projects, including renovations and the expansion of Roosevelt Elementary School and O'Loughlin Elementary School.

Wilson said the administration had been operating under the premise the funds from the sale of Lincoln and, eventually, Rockwell Administration Center would be used for further expenses associated with the bond projects.

However, it could go into paying back the bond. This decision will be up to the board.

Board member Allen Park said he thought the district should have advertised the building in more places and the property should be appraised.

Board member Ken Brooks said the appraisal had been discussed at an earlier board meeting. Appraisal for school buildings are inaccurate because they are public buildings and are not on the tax rolls.

Park said he thought the district should be selling the building for more.

Board member Ruth Ruder said she was pleased with the bid. She said the board members needed to consider the prices of the surrounding properties and the fact that the property is in a flood-prone area.

Other communities have had to abandon their schools or tear them down. Wichita recently turned one of its former schools into a homeless shelter, Ruder said.

Once the school is renovated, it should increase in value and go back on the tax rolls, which will benefit the city and school district in the form of additional property taxes, Ruder said.

The motion to move the sale forward was approved on a vote of 5-2, with Park and board member Derek Yarmer voting against it.

Kansas statute stipulates the state has the first right to purchase former school buildings. The state has to approve the sale before it can be finalized.

Once the contract is written, the Kansas Legislature has 45 days to consider action on the sale.

United Way funding is for 2025 budget year, while City of Hays and Ellis County is for the 2026 budget year.

He was born
October 25, 1950 in Pratt, the son of Edmund E. and Edith M. (McIntire)
Scantlin.&nbsp; Don was a graduate of Pratt
High School with the class of 1968, and he earned an Associate Degree from
Barton County Community College.&nbsp; In 1972, he was united in marriage to
Debra Wisdom and to this union were born two children, Ron and Amber.&nbsp; He later married Carolyn S. (Nicholson)
McCollum on December 16, 2001 in Hays, and they celebrated nearly 23 years of
marriage.&nbsp; Don worked various jobs, which
included law enforcement and hauling grain for WaKeeney Trucking.&nbsp; He was an avid reader, loved his precious
dogs, Xabbu and Willie, and enjoyed listening to music, fishing, deer hunting,
and indulging in cookies, ice cream and other delicious desserts.&nbsp; He was devoted to his family and a proud
grandpa who taught many of his grandchildren how to tie their shoes and how to
drive.

Survivors include his wife Carolyn of Hays, two sons, Ron
Scantlin and wife Gosia of Winter Garden, FL, Chance McCollum, three daughters,
Amber Jarriel and husband Billy of Augusta, GA, Dawn Malott of Hays, and Shana
Pittenger and husband Todd of Salina, a brother, Mike Scantlin and wife Angie
of Lafayette, IN, 15 grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant
sister, Edieta.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 am on Friday, November 29, 2024 at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home with Rick Claiborn officiating. Inurnment will follow in Fort Hays Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 9:30 am until service time. Memorials are suggested to Hope Lodge Kansas City or Tunnels to Towers Foundation. MANHEIM, Pa. - Fort Hays State's Tereus Henry&nbsp;held on to the No. 8 spot in the latest NWCA NCAA Division II Coaches Rankings, released Monday (Nov. 25) by the coaches association.

Henry, a former All-American and three-time national qualifier at 197 pounds, was also ranked eighth in the preseason coaches poll. The El Paso, Texas native is 4-2 so far this season, including two major decisions and two decisions.

He is tied for the team lead with four victories and ranks third with two bonus-point wins. Henry is 1-0 against NCAA Division II opponents this year.

The Tigers continue to receive votes in the team rankings, collecting six points, four back of the 25th-ranked team.

Fort Hays State will return to the mat in two weeks when FHSU hosts Ouachita Baptist for the first MIAA dual of the season on Saturday, December 7 before hosting the annual FHSU Bob Smith Open on Sunday, December 8.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Kansas Highway Patrol apprehended an escaped suspect on Thursday after a hunt in the rural area near Walker.

At about 4:30 p.m. Thursday, a Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper observed a silver Honda Pilot traveling eastbound on Interstate 70 at a high rate of speed near Walker, said&nbsp;Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper Tod Heilman.

The trooper made a traffic stop and found that a female passenger, 27-year-old Yury Alexandra Agudelo-Forero, had two active warrants out of Colorado for charges of burglary,&nbsp;Heilman said.

The trooper took the suspect into custody, placed her in handcuffs, placed her in the front seat of his vehicle and seatbelted her into the vehicle,&nbsp;Heilman said.

The trooper then returned to the stopped vehicle to assist the other trooper on the scene and assure his safety,&nbsp;Heilman said.

The suspect unbuckled the seatbelt, opened the door and fled,&nbsp;Heilman said.

A search for the suspect ensued, including troopers on the ground and a Kansas Highway Patrol plane in the air.

A witness reported seeing the suspect in a field near Gorham. The suspect, who was still in handcuffs, was taken back into custody without further incident at that location at about 10:05 p.m.,&nbsp;Heilman said.

The suspect was taken to HaysMed for examination because of her exposure to cold weather conditions. She was seen, released by the hospital and booked into the Ellis County Jail.

"No one was in danger of any harm," Heilman said. "She was just trying to get away from us."

Agudelo-Forero was still in custody at the Ellis County Jail as of Monday morning.

Heilman said the burglary case concerning her warrants is still under investigation.

Bronze on the Bricks Tanning &amp; Boutique is a new salon in downtown Hays that also offers a variety of clothing options.

The tanning salon is at 705 Fort St. and opened on Oct. 2. Owner Cari Readle said although there are tanning beds in Hays, Bronze On the Bricks is the only tanning salon in the area.

"We are the only tanning salon in town," she said. "There are some gyms that have one or two tanning beds, but we are the only one that's an actual tanning salon."

The salon features stand-up and lay-down tanning beds in private rooms for customers to achieve their perfect tan.

Bronze on the Brick's pricing includes $12.50 for an 11-minute session in a stand-up bed, $9 for a 12-minute session and $7 for a 15-minute session in a tanning bed.

Bronze on the Bricks requires customers to use eye protection and lotion to ensure safety against UV exposure.

"Medical benefits of taning are helping with rosacea and acne," Readle said. "During the winter months, it actually provides some of that vitamin D that we don't get from the sun."

Alongside the salon's opening, Bronze on the Bricks has introduced a boutique offering various clothing and other items.

"We brought in some clothing lines, little gift items and lotions. We thought it'd be an extra little perk for downtown Hays," Readle said.

Readle drew inspiration from larger city salons when reopening Bronze on the Bricks. She also owns Hotworx Infrared Fitness Studio and Coldwell Banker Executive Realty.

Readle said she plans to upgrade tanning equipment and introduce additional skincare services to enhance Hays's health and beauty.

"We may bring in some estheticians at some point to do different services, but then just continue to grow the boutique as well," she said.
