Don E. Scantlin, 74, Hays, died Saturday, November 23, 2024 at HaysMed.
He was born October 25, 1950 in Pratt, the son of Edmund E. and Edith M. (McIntire) Scantlin. Don was a graduate of Pratt High School with the class of 1968, and he earned an Associate Degree from Barton County Community College. In 1972, he was united in marriage to Debra Wisdom and to this union were born two children, Ron and Amber. He later married Carolyn S. (Nicholson) McCollum on December 16, 2001 in Hays, and they celebrated nearly 23 years of marriage. Don worked various jobs, which included law enforcement and hauling grain for WaKeeney Trucking. He was an avid reader, loved his precious dogs, Xabbu and Willie, and enjoyed listening to music, fishing, deer hunting, and indulging in cookies, ice cream and other delicious desserts. He was devoted to his family and a proud grandpa who taught many of his grandchildren how to tie their shoes and how to drive.
Survivors include his wife Carolyn of Hays, two sons, Ron Scantlin and wife Gosia of Winter Garden, FL, Chance McCollum, three daughters, Amber Jarriel and husband Billy of Augusta, GA, Dawn Malott of Hays, and Shana Pittenger and husband Todd of Salina, a brother, Mike Scantlin and wife Angie of Lafayette, IN, 15 grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister, Edieta.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 am on Friday, November 29, 2024 at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home with Rick Claiborn officiating. Inurnment will follow in Fort Hays Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 9:30 am until service time. Memorials are suggested to Hope Lodge Kansas City or Tunnels to Towers Foundation.
