JOPLIN, Mo. - The Fort Hays State men's cross country team finished in front of 19 schools Saturday at the 2024 NCAA Division II Central Region Championships held at the Tom Rutledge Cross Country Course on the campus of Missouri Southern,&nbsp;placing 12th in the field of 31 schools. It is the second-straight year the Tigers finished 12th at the regional meet.

Competing on a packed 10-kilometer course with a total of 213 runners,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-cross-country/roster/jaret-pfizenmaier/8157">Jaret Pfizenmaier</a>&nbsp;led the team with a 33rd-place finish&nbsp;after posting a time of 31:35.5.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-cross-country/roster/brady-stegman/8159">Brady Stegman</a>&nbsp;(32:03.0) and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-cross-country/roster/ethan-fisher/8154">Ethan Fisher</a>&nbsp;(32:05.1) finished back-to-back in 56th and 57th, respectively, with&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-cross-country/roster/christian-darrah/8164">Christian Darrah</a>&nbsp;crossing the line in 32:48.2 to place 94th.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-cross-country/roster/noah-morenz/8156">Noah Morenz</a>&nbsp;rounded out the Tiger top five with a time of 32:51.2, good for 98th place.

East Central took home the team title with 71 team points after placing five runners inside the top 17. Augustana's Ryan Hartman secured the individual title with a time of 30:07.8.ECU, Northwest Missouri State and Pittsburg State all locked in automatic bids to the 2024 NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships, which will be held in Sacramento, Calif. on November 23, while Hartman, Harding's Josphat Meli and Washburn's Donald Kibet secured auto bids as individuals. Ten more teams and at least eight individuals will be selected on an at-large basis, with those selections being announced on Monday.

🏃‍♂️ Tiger men 12th at NCAA II Regional

The agenda for Thursday's Hays City Commission work session was short, and each of the three discussion items involved new developments in the city.

"This is one of the most exciting agendas we've had in a while," said Alaina Cunningham, commissioner. "So many growth projects."

A partnership between DP Management Commercial Real Estate Services and RMDX Development, Omaha, Nebraska, proposes building a multi-family housing project with 136 apartment units. It would be located at the southeast corner of Wheatland Avenue and East 22nd St., just east of the Bright Minds Academy child care facility.

The apartment complex will cost $22 million for phase one, and $9.8 million for phase two.

The proposed "Victory Village" would include 48 market-rate units and 88 low-income units.

Brian Reilly, president of DP Management, said the company will apply for $650,000 in moderate-income housing grant funding from the Kansas Housing Resources Corporation and is asking the city for a resolution of support.

The developer is also partnering with Ellis County to submit an application for the low-income housing tax credits program.&nbsp;

DP Management already has a presence in Hays. 

Big Creek Crossing, 2918 Vine, is managed by DP Management as a third-party project on behalf of the owner.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"We want to do this [housing] project independently. That's what brought us here today. We believe there's a strong need for this housing and feel we can execute it very well," Reilly said.&nbsp;

DP Management Commercial Real Estate Services has completed similar housing projects in Omaha, Lincoln, Kearney, Norfolk and North Platte, Nebraska.&nbsp;

Reilly said construction could start in October 2025 if the project is successful.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Jarrod Kuckelman, Hays management analyst, updated the CERVS project to build a new convenience store and Phillips 66 gas station at its 3701 Vine Street facility.

CERVS wants to establish a 1.5% community improvement district (CID) sales tax on the site. The developer estimates the tax will generate about $895,000 over the maximum 22-year term of the CID.

City staff recommends that the ordinance establishing the CID, passing the sales tax, and approving the development agreement be approved.&nbsp;

A design-build agreement for remodeling the Astra Bank building, 1100 Fort, into the new Hays police and municipal court facility was presented by Collin Bielser, deputy city manager.

The city has been sharing space since 1976 with the Ellis County Law Enforcement Center at 105 W. 12th.

"This process has involved many phases and is near ready for preliminary design to begin for the renovation," Bielser said.

City staff recommends the governing body proceed with the proposal submitted by PWC, Inc., Hays.

PWC has submitted a lump sum fee of $182,000 to complete Phase 1 services. This will provide 30% design plans for the renovation and establish a guaranteed maximum price for the project. The project will be funded by general obligation temporary notes issued in October.

The commission moved to add the three agenda items for a vote at their Nov. 14 meeting.

Commissioner Reese Barrick was absent from the meeting.&nbsp;

More development projects in Hays involve housing, business, city

Through 87 meetings between Hays and Great Bend the two had never played against the other in postseason football. That all changed on rainy, cold Friday in Great Bend.

Hays never trailed in a 19-14 victory over the Panthers.

Each team punted on their first possession to open the game. Great Bend received great field position after the Hays punt. The drive was cut short on Cooper Lindenmeyer's second interception of the season. Hays used the momentum to go 14 plays that covered 75 yards for a touchdown.&nbsp;

Hays got onto the scoreboard with a 25 yard touchdown pass from Carter Graham to Johnny Cano. The Indians failed to convert on a two-point conversion try.

Hays increased the lead to 13-0 on an Ian McGuire 81 yard run in the second quarter. A Carson Moore extra point try went right through the uprights.

Great Bend put their best drive of the game together on the following possession. Daxon Minton found Jacob Hall for a 33 yard score. The extra point made it 13-7 with 7:43 remaining before halftime. Just before halftime the Panthers had a chance to take the lead but the Indians broke up a pass in the end zone.

Hays held the ball for 6:30 on the first drive of the second half but turned the ball over on downs after 13 plays. Great Bend threw their second interception of the game on the next drive. Caleb Thompson got his third pick of the year.&nbsp;

🏈Hays continues season with postseason win at Great Bend

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks cruised to more records as they closed their best week in a year on Friday.

The S&amp;P 500 rose 0.4% to cap its biggest weekly gain since early November 2023 and briefly crossed above the 6,000 level for the first time. The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 259 points, or 0.6%, while the Nasdaq composite added 0.1%.

The relatively quiet trading followed&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/stock-markets-rates-china-93421462d761eb1402d813cb381fe6e9">huge gains</a>&nbsp;earlier in the week after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-key-coalitions-coalitions-ap-votecast-ce3d9fc91beae8d3647efd6d5e08b1d8">Donald Trump won the presidential election</a>&nbsp;and the Federal Reserve&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/federal-reserve-election-inflation-trump-economy-prices-e6b837fd85cff5ad71d4e40939b97237">cut interest rates again</a>&nbsp;to make things easier for the economy.

Axon Enterprise, which sells Tasers and body cameras used by police officers, helped lead the market. It jumped 28.7% after delivering stronger profit for the latest quarter than analysts expected. It also raised its revenue forecast for the full year to $2.07 billion, which would mean 32% growth.

Expedia Group rose 3.8% after likewise topping profit expectations. It said booked room nights rose 9% from a year earlier.

Helping to keep the market in check was Airbnb, which sank 8.7% after the online vacation rental platform posted a mixed third-quarter earnings report and issued forecasts for the fourth quarter that disappointed investors.

Digital pinboard and shopping site Pinterest slid 14% after the company’s revenue guidance came in lower than investors expected, even as it easily beat Wall Street’s sales and profit targets.

All told, the S&amp;P 500 rose 22.44 points to 5,995.54. The Dow gained 259.65 to 43,988.99, and the Nasdaq composite edged up 17.32 to 19,286.78.

In the bond market, longer-term Treasury yields eased.

A preliminary report in the morning suggested sentiment among U.S. consumers rose for a fourth straight month to its highest level in six months. The survey from the University of Michigan, which was conducted before Tuesday’s election, also said expectations for inflation in the coming year eased to the lowest level since 2020.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury slipped to 4.30% from 4.33% late Thursday. But it’s still well above where it was in mid-September, when it was close to 3.60%.

Treasury yields climbed in large part because the U.S. economy has remained much more resilient than feared. The hope is that&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/jobs-hiring-election-economy-inflation-unemployment-presidential-dcf54cd3b40f01ca78bccf86cd8e13d5">it can continue to stay solid</a>&nbsp;as the Federal Reserve continues to cut interest rates in order to keep the job market humming, now that it’s helped get&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/inflation-prices-election-federal-reserve-rates-economy-e4ff4b6745ea1c8badd6a0502f372f25">inflation nearly down to its 2% target</a>.

Some of the rise in yields has also been because of Trump. He talks up tariffs and other policies that economists say&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-inflation-tariffs-taxes-immigration-federal-reserve-a18de763fcc01557258c7f33cab375ed">could drive inflation and the U.S. government’s debt higher</a>, along with the economy’s growth.

Traders have already begun paring forecasts for how many cuts to rates the Fed will deliver next year because of that. While lower rates can boost the economy, they can also give inflation more fuel.

In stock markets abroad, Trump’s talk about tariffs has raised worries about possible trade tensions and disruptions to the global economy.

European indexes mostly sank to close out a losing week.

Markets in Hong Kong and Shanghai fell as investors awaited much-anticipated steps by Beijing to rev up the slowing&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/china-economy-stimulus-d3ba981eb1fb9894fa9e8a08ffac40ee">Chinese economy</a>&nbsp;following a meeting of the legislature’s Standing Committee. Officials announced a 6 trillion yuan ($839 billion), three-year plan to help local governments refinance their many trillions of debt that has ballooned during the COVID-19 pandemic and a collapse of the property market.

Financial markets worldwide have swung sharply as investors lay bets on what Trump’s plans for&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/donald-trump-wins-second-term-policies-de3dcf0f173b42602b258042fd7aaafb">higher tariffs, lower tax rates and lighter regulation</a>&nbsp;could mean for the global economy. But many professional investors have also urged caution, saying snaps back in prices could occur as it becomes more clear what proposals will become policy versus just starting points for negotiations.

“Our experience is that such narrow reactions have not historically made for durable investment opportunities, and we favor pausing to look more closely at the likely main policy initiatives,” according to Paul Christopher, head of global investment strategy at Wells Fargo Investment Institute.

U.S. banks and the stocks of more domestically focused companies have seen some of the wildest moves, as some of the poster children of the “Trump trade.”

Wall Street cruises to its best week in a year

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department on Friday disclosed an Iranian murder-for-hire plot to kill&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/donald-trump">Donald Trump</a>, charging a man who said he had been tasked by a government official before this week's election with planning the assassination of the Republican president-elect.

Investigators learned of the plan to kill Trump from Farhad Shakeri, an accused Iranian government asset who spent time in American prisons for robbery and who authorities say maintains a network of criminal associates enlisted by Tehran for surveillance and murder-for-hire plots.

Shakeri told investigators that a contact in Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard instructed him this past September to set aside other work he was doing and assemble a plan within seven days to surveil and ultimately kill Trump, according to a criminal complaint unsealed in federal court in Manhattan.

The official was quoted by Shakeri as saying that “We have already spent a lot of money" and that “money’s not an issue.” Shakeri told investigators the official told him that if he could not put together a plan within the seven-day timeframe, then the plot would be paused until after the election because the official assumed Trump would lose and that it would be easier to kill him then, the complaint said.

Shakeri is at large and remains in Iran. Two other men were arrested on charges that Shakeri recruited them to follow and kill&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iran-murderforhire-human-rights-alinejad-1c12a0add2181238568109754f5ed6bd">prominent Iranian-American journalist Masih Alinejad</a>, who has endured mulitple Iranian murder-for-hire plots foiled by law enforcement.

“I’m very shocked,” said Alinejad, speaking by telephone to The Associated Press from Berlin, where she was about to attend a ceremony to mark the anniversary of the tearing down of the wall. “This is the third attempt against me and that’s shocking.”

In a post on the social media platform X, she said: "I came to America to practice my First Amendment right to freedom of speech — I don’t want to die. I want to fight against tyranny, and I deserve to be safe. Thank you to law enforcement for protecting me, but I urge the U.S. government to protect the national security of America."

Lawyers for the two other defendants, identified as Jonathan Loadholt and Carlisle Rivera, did not immediately return messages seeking comment. Iran's U.N. Mission declined to comment.

Shakeri, an Afghan national who immigrated to the U.S. as a child but was later deported after spending 14 years in prison for robbery, also told investigators that he was tasked by his Revolutionary Guard contact with plotting the killings of two Jewish-Americans living in New York and Israeli tourists in Sri Lanka. Officials say he overlapped with Rivera while in prison as well as an unidentified co-conspirator.

The criminal complaint says Shakeri disclosed some of the details of the alleged plots in a series of recorded telephone interviews with FBI agents while in Iran. The stated reason for his cooperation, he told investigators, was to try to get a reduced prison sentence for an associate behind bars in the U.S.

According to the complaint, though officials determined that some of the information he provided was false, his statements regarding a plot to kill Trump and Iran's willingness to pay large sums of money were determined to be accurate.

The plot, disclosed just days after Trump's defeat of Democrat Kamala Harris, reflects what federal officials have described as ongoing efforts by Iran to target U.S. government officials, including Trump, on U.S. soil. Last summer,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iran-pakistan-murderforhire-trump-justice-department-5a3abe0895ae7c2be14f89fc4e49bc53">the Justice Department charged a Pakistani man with ties to Iran</a>&nbsp;in a murder-for-hire plot targeting American officials.

“There are few actors in the world that pose as grave a threat to the national security of the United States as does Iran,” Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement Friday. FBI Director Christopher Wray said the case shows Iran's “continued brazen attempts to target U.S. citizens,” including Trump, “other government leaders and dissidents who criticize the regime in Tehran.”

Dearborn, Michigan to David John and Rosella Olive (Hite) Fritz.&nbsp;&nbsp; Jim was born into a family of nine children
of which he was the fourth.&nbsp; He grew up
in Michigan and attended schools there.&nbsp;
He joined the Navy on August 27, 1954 and served for thirteen
years.&nbsp; During his navy years, he served
his country as a radioman being deployed on several different ships around the
world. His main base was in Norfolk, Virginia. He was a Vietnam War
veteran.&nbsp; He was honorably discharged on
August 19, 1967.&nbsp; He was a lifetime
member of VFW Post 6240 in Russell, Kansas.&nbsp;
After his service in the Navy, Jim became a tool and die maker and
worked for ABCO Wire in Russell, Kansas for 24 years.&nbsp; He retired in 2000.&nbsp;&nbsp; 

Jim was married to Janice Perry on
September 20, 1958.&nbsp; Two children joined
the family at that time, Arden and Perry (Bud).&nbsp;
This union was also blessed with three additional sons, James Jr
(Chris), Richard and Bryan.&nbsp; The couple
later divorced.&nbsp; Jim was able to find
love a second time and married Carol Thompson on September 5, 1981.&nbsp; This union joined two more children to the
family, Michael and Donna.&nbsp; Jim and Carol
were married for 43 years and shared many happy days and adventures together,
including annual road trips around the country.&nbsp;
As a couple, Jim and Carol were crafters making musical instruments and
various other projects.&nbsp; They spread joy
with their crafts, traveling to many states.&nbsp;
Jim's most favorite thing to do was entertain family, especially grand
and great-grandchildren, and craft show goers with his magic tricks, therefore
he acquired the nickname of "Magic Grandpa".&nbsp; 

Jim is survived by his wife, Carol
and their seven children and families.&nbsp;
Arden (Greg) Jones, Bud (Teresa) Fritz, Chris (Shari) Fritz, Richard
(Lee) Fritz, Bryan Fritz and significant other (Barb),&nbsp; Michael (Stephanie) Thompson, Donna (Barney)

Fort Hays State enters its 56th season of women's basketball with 982 wins in program history. The Tigers need 18 victories to reach 1,000 wins all-time.

The Tigers return nine players from last year's squad that went 25-8, finished second in the MIAA regular season, reached the MIAA Tournament championship game and advanced to the Central Region semifinals in 2023-24. FHSU brings back 68.4 percent of their scoring offense from last season, 73.7 percent of their rebounding and 61.7 percent of their assists.

Fort Hays State reached 20 wins for a 13th-consecutive season last year, extending the longest active streak of 20-win seasons in Division II. It is tied for the sixth-longest active streak of 20-win seasons across all NCAA Divisions. The next-best active streak of 20-win seasons in the MIAA is three (MWSU, MSSU), while the next-best streak in DII is Drury with 11. Only five DI programs have longer active stretches of 20-win seasons, including UConn (31), Baylor (24), Stanford (23), Florida Gulf Coast (20) and Louisville (14).

The Tigers are ranked 23rd in the WBCA DII Coaches Poll and 22nd in the D2CSC National Media Poll to begin the 2024-25 season. It is the sixth time in school history that the Tigers have been ranked in each preseason poll. It is also the sixth time FHSU has been ranked 23rd in the coaches poll and the first since November 2022. FHSU is 3-4 when ranked 23rd and 157-43 all-time when ranked.

Fort Hays State tops this year's MIAA Preseason Media Poll, while the Tigers are second in the Coaches Poll. The Tigers have been no lower than fifth in each of the last 13 preseason coaches polls, including four appearances at No. 2 and a pair of picks to win the league.

The Tigers played in one official exhibition game during the preseason, traveling to Storrs, Conn. to take on the UConn Huskies. FHSU gave the second-ranked team in Division I all it could handle in the first quarter, trailing 15-11 after 10 minutes, before ultimately falling by a final score of 89-49. The Maize, Kan. native enters her fifth year at FHSU with 1,732 career points, fourth-most in school history. She is third on the DII active points list. DeGarmo also ranks second in team history with 965 career rebounds.

She is 10th in team history with 1,402 points while ranking second with 169 career blocks.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/kate-dilsaver/8327">Kate Dilsaver</a>&nbsp;scored a career-high 17 points in her most recent outing, doing so on 6-of-11 shooting in the Central Region semifinal matchup against Minnesota State. The Lincoln, Neb. native enters her senior season with 397 career points, 237 career rebounds and exactly 100 career steals.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/brooke-loewe/8331">Brooke Loewe</a>&nbsp;is FHSU's top returning assister from a year ago, dishing out 91 dimes for an average of 2.8 per game in 2023-24. The Huxley, Iowa native has totaled 155 assists across 61 games over her first two seasons in a Tiger uniform.

Fort Hays State has had success against teams from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference in the past, accumulating an all-time record of 47-19 against current NSIC programs.

The Tigers are 0-2 all-time against Augustana, losing to the Vikings in 1991 and 2022. Both of those matchups were also at a neutral site. FHSU led for nearly 30 minutes before Augie rallied for a 62-59 win two years ago (11/11/22).Fort Hays State won its only matchup with MSU Moorhead, eliminating the Dragons from the 2019 NCAA Division II Central Region Championships in the semifinals (3/16/19). Rainy Friday in Hays

On Thursday, the Hays Senior Center, 2450 E. Eighth, hosted one of several local events thanking and honoring veterans for their military service.

The program started at 1 p.m., allowing attendance by veterans who had earlier participated in the Hays Kiwanis military appreciation lunch next door at the Rose Garden Banquet Hall.&nbsp;

The Rose Garden provided the dessert cake served at the conclusion of the senior center program.

Emcee Guy Windholz, Senior Center board member and former Ellis County commissioner, welcomed the special guests, including World War II veterans Don Bickle, U.S. Navy, and Bob Pfeifer, U.S. Army, of Hays. Both men are 97 years old.

Honored posthumously was Hays army veteran Harold Plymell, who was stationed in Japan during World War II. He passed away Oct. 17 at the age of 98.

Alex Freidenberger, who served in World War II as an army tech sergeant, was also attending. From Bison, he's the oldest living veteran in Rush County and celebrated his 100th birthday on Aug. 12.

Freidenberger shared what he has in common with another World War II veteran, former President Jimmy Carter, a naval veteran.

"We're both 100 old this year. We both voted by mail,&nbsp; and we both taught Sunday school in church. How about that?" Freidenberger said.

A patriotic musical tribute was sung by the Victoria group Trilogy, comprised of Jerry Schmidtberger, Rick Rupp and Leroy Schmidtberger.

The event was made possible by a community fund grant from Midwest Energy.

The annual Ellis County Veterans Day program will be Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. at the Hays VFW Post 9076, 2106 Vine. A free-will donation lunch will follow the program. Everyone is invited.&nbsp;

Local veterans honored at Hays Senior Center program

Voters in the sprawling North Central Kansas 110th
House District have again elected Agra Republican Ken Rahjes to represent them
in Topeka.

According to the unofficial election results from the Kansas
Secretary of State’s office, Rahjes won all five counties that comprise the 110th
district, amassing 9,215 votes compared to 1,606 for Democrat Ellace Henderson.

He said it’s an honor that voters in the district had the “confidence”
to send him back to Topeka.

"Sometimes, one should not take that for granted. I don't
believe I did," Rhajes said. "Every day we were out working it like we do every
day, whether we're up for election or not, and so it means a
lot."

Rahjes said he believes the overwhelming support he
received, winning handily in all five counties, sends a strong message.

“They want us to keep doing what we're doing, and that is
fight for the rights and the freedoms that we have, and what we've been doing
the last several years has met favorably with those in the 110th district,” Rhajes
said. 

He said he is proud of his work on higher education and
supporting agriculture in the state during his nine years in the legislature.

Water conservation is also an important topic Rahjes says will
be a focus of the next legislative session.

“How we make sure that we have good quality and quantity of
water, not&nbsp;only for irrigators but industrial users and municipalities and
to have those relationships with those stakeholders is so important,” Rhajes
said.

Ag issues will continue to be a significant focal point for
Rahjes.

"We've been trying to make sure that agriculture interests
stay front and center in an agriculture state," Rahjes said. "And people say, 'Well,
that makes sense.' Well, you know, we become more urbanized all the time as a
state."

He said he is disappointed in their work on tax relief, and
he believes that will be a focal point this year.

"We can make good, strong investments and also give some of
that money the federal government gave us during COVID that we've been holding
on back in the form of tax relief," Rahjes said. "I think that's what you're
going to see because of the national outlook and then Trump tax cuts up for
renewal this coming year, now, with him being in the White House and at least
one, if not both, houses of Congress in D.C., going Republican, you'll see a big
push that, I think that will spill over into the state."

Rahjes also said he believes there will be a learning process
in the first year of the new legislature because of the new faces in Congress.

"Everybody on Election Day is kind of at an all-time high
point. The adrenaline is going, and now we got to govern," Rahjes said. "It's
great to win an election, but now this is the heavy lift. This is the
governing. This is to put those thoughts and those ideas and push them forward
to do no harm to our Kansas citizens and do what's right."

Due to the observance of the Veterans Day, Monday, November 11, 2024, refuse/recycling route collection schedules will be altered as follows:

 Monday, November 11 and Tuesday, November 12 will both be picked up on Tuesday, November 12. 

There will be no changes to the Wednesday, November 13 through Friday November 15 collection schedules.

It is anticipated that heavy volumes of refuse/recyclable will be encountered around the holidays. Please be sure to set your bags out by 7:00 a.m. on the collection day and keep in mind that the trucks have no set time schedule.

City of Hays customers that may have any questions regarding this notice should contact the Solid Waste Division of the Public Works Department at 785-628-7350.

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State Women's Wrestling posted an impressive 42-5 win over Southeast (Neb.) Community College in the first ever dual for women's wrestling at Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Tigers won the first nine matches of the dual on their way to the 37-point win. FHSU improved to 2-1 overall on the season. The Bobcats entered as the NWCA Preseason No. 5 ranked team in the NJCAA.

The Tigers picked up five points right out of the gate as Southeast was open at 103 pounds.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-wrestling/roster/arianna-ortiz/8214">Arianna Ortiz</a>&nbsp;picked up the free win. 🤼‍♀️ Tiger women blitz Bobcats in first-ever home dual

WASHINGTON (AP) —&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/joe-biden">Joe Biden's</a>&nbsp;name wasn't on the ballot, but history will likely remember&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/kamala-harris">Kamala Harris'</a>&nbsp;resounding defeat as his loss too.

As Democrats&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/democrats-trump-harris-election-future-5bf8bd0ca6683119a846abd446544407">pick up the pieces</a>&nbsp;after President-elect&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/donald-trump">Donald Trump's</a>&nbsp;decisive&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/election-day-trump-harris-white-house-83c8e246ab97f5b97be45cdc156af4e2">victory</a>, some of the vice president's backers are expressing frustration that Biden's decision to seek reelection until this summer — despite long-standing voter concerns about his age and unease about post-pandemic inflation as well as the U.S.-Mexico border — all but sealed his party's surrender of the White House.

“The biggest onus of this loss is on President Biden,” said Andrew Yang, who ran against Biden in 2020 for the Democratic nomination and endorsed Harris’ unsuccessful run. “If he had stepped down in January instead of July, we may be in a very different place.”

Biden will leave office after leading the United States out of the worst pandemic in a century, galvanizing international support for Ukraine after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/russia-ukraine">Russia’s invasion</a>&nbsp;and passing a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/joe-biden-congress-infrastructure-bill-signing-b5b8cca843133de060778f049861b144">$1 trillion infrastructure bill</a>&nbsp;that will affect communities for years to come.

But having run four years ago against Trump to “restore the soul of the country,” Biden will make way after just one term for his immediate predecessor, who overcame two impeachments, a felony conviction and an insurrection launched by his supporters. Trump has pledged to radically reshape the federal government and roll back many of Biden's priorities.

“Maybe in 20 or 30 years, history will remember Biden for some of these achievements,” said Thom Reilly, co-director of the Center for an Independent and Sustainable Democracy at Arizona State University. “But in the shorter term, I don’t know he escapes the legacy of being the president who beat Donald Trump only to usher in another Donald Trump administration four years later.”

The president on Wednesday stayed out of sight for the second straight day, making congratulatory calls to Democratic lawmakers who won downballot races and to Trump. Biden invited Trump for a White House meeting, and the president-elect accepted.

Biden is set to deliver a Rose Garden address Thursday about the election. He issued a statement shortly after Harris delivered her concession speech Wednesday, praising Harris for running an “historic campaign” under “extraordinary circumstances.”

Some high-ranking Democrats, including three advisers to the Harris campaign, expressed deep frustration with Biden for failing to recognize earlier in the election cycle that he was not up to the challenge. The advisers spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to comment publicly.

Biden, 81, ended his reelection campaign in July, weeks after an abysmal debate performance sent his party into a spiral and raised questions about whether he still had the mental acuity and stamina to serve as a credible nominee.

But polling long beforehand showed that&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-age-poll-trump-2024-620e0a5cfa0039a6448f607c17c7f23e">many Americans worried about his age</a>. Some 77% of Americans said in August 2023 that Biden was too old to be effective for four more years, according to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-age-poll-trump-2024-620e0a5cfa0039a6448f607c17c7f23e">a poll</a>&nbsp;by the AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs.

The president&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-drops-out-2024-election-ddffde72838370032bdcff946cfc2ce6">bowed out on July 21</a>&nbsp;after getting not-so-subtle nudges from Democratic Party powers, including former President Barack Obama and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California. Biden&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-drops-out-2024-election-ddffde72838370032bdcff946cfc2ce6">endorsed Harris</a>&nbsp;and handed over his campaign operation to her.

Yang argued that Democratic Party leaders also deserve blame for taking too long to push out Biden. With few exceptions, most notably Minnesota Rep. Dean Phillips, Democrats shied away talking publicly about Biden's age.

“Why was this not coming from any Democratic leaders?" Yang said. “It’s a lack of courage and independence and an excess of careerism, if I just keep my mouth shut, we’ll just keep on trucking along.”

The campaign was also saddled by anger among some Arab American and young voters over its approach to Israel's conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon. Sen. Bernie Sanders, an ally of Biden and Harris, said in a statement that Democrats lost the thread on working class Americans' concerns.

“Will the big money interests and well-paid consultants who control the Democratic Party learn any real lessons from this disastrous campaign?” the Vermont independent said. “Will they understand the pain and political alienation that tens of millions of Americans are experiencing?”

Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison took to social media Thursday to push back on Sanders' critique, saying that Biden was “the most-pro worker President of my life time.”

Harris managed to spur far greater enthusiasm than Biden was generating from the party's base. But she struggled to distinguish how her administration would differ from Biden's.

Appearing on ABC’s “The View” in September, Harris&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/harris-stern-view-colbert-60-minutes-daddy-5a2af60ba0b1099e19cca151955c9855">was not able to identify</a>&nbsp;a decision where she would have separated herself from Biden. “There is not a thing that comes to mind,” Harris said, giving the Trump campaign a sound bite it replayed through Election Day.

The strategists advising the Harris campaign said the compressed campaign timetable made it even more difficult for Harris to differentiate herself from the president.

Had Biden stepped aside early in the year, they said, it would have given Democrats enough time to hold a primary. Going through the paces of an intraparty contest would have forced Harris or another eventual nominee to more aggressively stake out differences with Biden.

The strategists acknowledged that overcoming broad dissatisfaction among the American electorate about rising costs in the aftermath of the coronavirus pandemic and broad concerns about the U.S. immigration system weighed heavy on the minds of voters in key states.

Still, they said that Biden had left Democrats in an untenable place.

Harris senior adviser David Plouffe in&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/davidplouffe/status/1854244538036195432?s=46">a posting on X</a>&nbsp;called it a “devastating loss.” Plouffe did not assign blame and said the Harris campaign “dug out of a deep hole but not enough.” The post was later deleted.

At the vice president's&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kamala-harris-donald-trump-election-ddeae9fb378530159201ef4196cba9b3">concession speech</a>&nbsp;on Wednesday, some Harris supporters said they wished the vice president had had more time to make her pitch to American voters.

“I think that would have made a huge difference," said Jerushatalla Pallay, a Howard University student who attended the speech at the center of her campus.
