Ellis County Conservation District

The Trego, Ellis, and Russell County Conservation Districts will be hosting a Local Working Group (LWG) meeting on Thursday, February 27, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at Hays Public Library, 1205 Main Street, Hays, KS 67601. 

This event is open to the public at no cost.

The purpose of this meeting is to make recommendations to the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) State Conservationist related to addressing natural resource concerns at local level.

“LWGs are important because they provide recommendations on local and state natural resource priorities and criteria for U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) conservation activities and programs. It is critical that the ‘boots on the ground’ have a voice in the process,” said Dan Meyerhoff, executive director for the Kansas Association of Conservation Districts.

According to Meyerhoff, the LWG should be diverse and focus on agricultural interests and natural resource issues existing in the community. Membership should include agricultural producers representing the variety of crops, livestock, and poultry raised within the local area; owners of nonindustrial private forest land, representatives of agricultural and environmental organizations; and governmental agencies carrying out agricultural and natural resource conservation and activities. 

LWGs also take into account concerns of particular historically underserved groups and individuals including but not limited to women, persons with disabilities, socially disadvantaged, and limited resource groups.

Ellis County conservation groups to host Local Working Group meeting

At about 6:56 p.m. Monday, the Hays Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a structure fire with smoke showing located at 1725 Haney Drive in Hays.

Upon arrival, fire crews found a detached garage behind the home heavily involved with fire. Crews quickly deployed two 1 ¾-inch handlines to attack the fire.

Firefighters quickly brought the fire under control. Crews stayed on the scene, searching for and extinguishing hot spots.

No injuries were reported. An investigation was conducted after the fire to try and determine the cause and origin of the fire. The investigation concluded that the fire was accidental.

The Hays Fire Department, Ellis County Fire Department Company 5, Ellis County EMS, Hays Police Department and Midwest Energy all responded.

The Hays Fire Department would like to remind everyone to check smoke and CO alarms to make sure they are functioning correctly.

DODGE CITY - Hays High's final road trip of the regular season was trip to Dodge City on Tuesday. and the Indians came away with the season sweep of the Red Demons.

GIRLS: #4 Hays 60, Dodge City 15 Hays used a big run in each of the first two quarter to create separation from Dodge City on the way to a 60-15 victory.

Hays yielded the first two points to injured senior Tatum Steiner following the tipoff on Senior Night for the Red Demons. Hays trailed once more at 4-3 before going on their first big run.

The Indians scored 13 straight points to take a lead they would never give back. Hays led 16-4 after their first big run of the second half and 21-9 after the first quarter.

Dodge City's only two points of the second quarter were the first points of the frame. Hays scored the next 15 points and led 36-11 at halftime.

Hays didn't allow a field goal in the second quarter, outscoring the Red Demons 16-1. The Indians led by a score of 52-12 going the fourth quarter meaning the final stanza was played with a running clock.

The Indians still outscored Dodge City 8-3 for the final of 60-15.

Dodge City (1-18, 0-7) managed just five made field goals. It is the tenth opponent to have single digit made field goals against the Indians. Hays (19-0, 7-0) forced a season high 38 turnovers.&nbsp;

The victory gives Hays the Western Athletic title outright with one game remaining against Great Bend on Friday.

BOYS:&nbsp;Hays 62, Dodge City 47 Hays used a big second half to pull away from Dodge City in a 62-47 win on the road Tuesday.

Hays scored the first six points of the game only to be countered by nine straight by Dodge City. The Indians followed that run up with one of their own. This time a 10-0 run gave the Indians 16-9 advantage.

Hays led 20-14 heading into the second quarter. The Red Demons controlled that frame outscoring Hays 17-11. The Indians led 27-24 but turned the ball over their next five possessions. Dodge City had just enough punch to score six straight points for a 30-27 advantage.

Hays broke a three and a half minute scoring drought&nbsp; with four straight points regaining a 31-30 edge. The Red Demons made one of two free throws to tie the game at 31 at halftime.

Hays scored the first five points of the second half and never trailed again. Dawson Ruder scored all five of those points on a night when he scored a career high 27.

Dodge City pulled within two points at 38-36 on a pair of free throws with 2:48 left in the third quarter. The remainder of the time Hays outscored Dodge City 8-2 to take a 46-38 lead going to the fourth quarter.

Hays took an early ten point lead in the fourth quarter before the Red Demons made one more push. They scored back-to-back field goals to get within six at 48-42 with 6:45 remaining.

The Indians dominated the remainder of the game ending it with a 14-5 run for the 62-47 victory.

Hays (12-7, 6-1) shot 50% from the field and held a 14 rebound margin. Dodge City (5-14, 2-5) shot 7 of 21 in the second half after 12 of 23 in the first.

Hays will host Great Bend on Friday to finish the regular season on Senior Night.

🏀 Hays completes sweep of Dodge City on Tuesday

TOPEKA, Kan. – Fort Hays State moved to 8-4 overall on the season with another pair of wins on Tuesday at the Washburn Invitational in Topeka. The Tigers defeated Northern State 5-2 and then Minot State 4-0.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/morgan-schmidt/8190">Morgan Schmidt</a>&nbsp;tied her career high for strikeouts in a game with 12 in the final contest of the tournament.

Fort Hays State 5, Northern State 2 The Tigers used a four-run rally in the sixth inning to get past Northern State in their first contest of the day. FHSU initially went up 1-0 in the first inning on a&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/madison-pierce/8188">Madison Pierce</a>&nbsp;RBI single, but a two-run home run put the Wolves on top 2-1 in the bottom of the third. The Tigers tied the game in the sixth on a clutch RBI single by&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/lilliana-ramirez-johnson/8189">Lilliana Ramirez-Johnson</a>&nbsp;and then moments later&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/audrey-gillespie/8185">Audrey Gillespie</a>&nbsp;cleared all Tigers off the bases with a 3-RBI double.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/savanah-egger/8183">Savanah Egger</a>&nbsp;threw her third-straight complete game of the Washburn Invitational, finishing with five strikeouts. She scattered seven hits but did not allow any walks. Egger moved to 4-2 overall on the season.Aune Boben, who hit the two-run homer for the Wolves, was the starting pitcher. However, she was responsible for four of the five runs and took the loss.

Ramirez-Johnson finished with a team-best two hits in the game.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/jules-bosco/8199">Jules Bosco</a>&nbsp;scored a pair of runs.

Fort Hays State 4, Minot State 0 <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/morgan-schmidt/8190">Morgan Schmidt</a>&nbsp;threw her first complete game shutout of the season, pitching her way out of a few tight situations throughout the second contest of the day. She matched her career high of strikeouts with 12, accomplished twice before. She struck out the side in the seventh to reach the career mark again. Schmidt moved to 4-2 on the season.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/lilly-mohr/8194">Lilly Mohr</a>&nbsp;helped put the Tigers up 1-0 in the fourth when she singled. A misplay by the left fielder allowed a runner to come in to score on the play. A&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/madison-pierce/8188">Madison Pierce</a>&nbsp;walk and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/regan-curry/8182">Regan Curry</a>&nbsp;single set up the opportunity.

An error by Minot State in the fifth was costly, resulting in three unearned runs for the Tigers. Curry knocked in the first run with an RBI groundout.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/abbey-duarte/8206">Abbey Duarte</a>&nbsp;followed with a two-RBI single.<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/jules-bosco/8199">Jules Bosco</a>&nbsp;had a pair of hits in the game to lead the Tigers. Pierce scored twice.

Next on the schedule for FHSU is conference play, starting on March 7 against Central Missouri in Hays.&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; She was born on April 2, 1942, in Larned, Kansas to Elmer and Alice (Andree) Hinkel.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Laurine had three brothers, Leonard, Leland, and Lynn Hinkel.&nbsp; She graduated from Barton Community College and attended FHSU.&nbsp; In her later years she attended college in Mesa, Arizona where she graduated as a Registered Respiratory Therapist.&nbsp; Her time was spent at Hays Medical Center, St. Francis and Wesley in Wichita, KS.&nbsp; Before retiring she was a Sleep Lab Tech at Hays Medical Center.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Her most treasured were her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.&nbsp; She touched our lives in immeasurable ways.&nbsp; Beyond being a mother and grandmother, Laurine was a dear friend, grandma and mom to many.&nbsp; Her kindness and empathy touched lives, offering support and wise counsel.&nbsp; Her presence brought comfort to those in need.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Laurine’s role as a grandmother brought her immense joy. Her grandchildren, great-grandchildren were her world.&nbsp; She showered them with love, creating cherished memories they will hold dear.

The Fort Hays State women's basketball team moved up in both national polls after picking up a pair of wins last week, including one win over a top five team in the country. The Tigers enter the final week of the regular season ranked sixth in the latest WBCA NCAA Division II Coaches Poll while FHSU moved up to No. 10 in the latest D2CSC Media Poll, both released Tuesday.

Now 24-2 on the year, the Tigers accumulated 466 points in the voting process of the coaches poll, up from 438 when they were ranked seventh last week. FHSU is just eight points behind fourth-ranked Texas-Tyler.

This is the second time the Tigers have been ranked sixth this season after also occupying that spot in December. It is the ninth time the Tigers have been slotted sixth in the coaches poll all-time, with FHSU picking up a 12-2 record when ranked sixth.

Fort Hays State has been in the WBCA Top 25 118 times during the DII era, including 78 appearances in the top 10. The Tigers are 181-45 when ranked and 128-26 when listed in the top 10.The Tigers are now the highest-ranked MIAA team in the country after knocking off then-No. 5 Pittsburg State on Saturday. The Gorillas dipped to No. 10 this week, with region rival Concordia-St. Paul right behind at No. 11.

Fort Hays State wraps up the regular season this week with two games against Nebraska-Kearney. The Tigers and Lopers will first meet in Hays on Wednesday (Feb. 26) beginning at 5:30 p.m. before facing off three days later in Kearney beginning at 2 p.m.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Fort Hays State baseball senior Cade Flaherty&nbsp;has been named this week's MIAA Pitcher of the Week, announced Tuesday (Feb. 25) by the league office.

Flaherty tossed a complete game five-hitter Sunday afternoon (Feb. 23), helping the Tigers sweep Arkansas-Fort Smith in the first conference series of the season. The senior matched his career high with 10 strikeouts in the game while allowing Lion hitters to post a batting average of .172. Flaherty allowed more than one runner in an inning only once.

This is the second time Flaherty has earned the conference's weekly honor in his career, also doing so last February (2/19/24). He is the second Tiger to earn a weekly recognition from the league office this season after Elliott Herrmann&nbsp;was named the first MIAA Hitter of the Week of 2025. Fort Hays State is the only school in the conference to earn both a Hitter of the Week and Pitcher of the Week recognition so far this season.

The Tigers will return to Larks Park for its next nine games beginning this weekend (Feb. 28-March 2) when FHSU hosts Missouri Western. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. on Friday, 2 p.m. on Saturday and noon on Sunday.

Born on February 2, 1959, in Hays, Kansas, Janel was the treasured daughter of Virgil and Louise Windholz and a devoted sister to her seven siblings. From an early age, she radiated a creative passionate spirit— always eager to perform, design, and express herself with an innate sense of style. Her playful, sneaky nature and deep commitment as a sister forged enduring bonds within her family.

A proud graduate of Ness City High School, Janel nurtured her artistic dreams through studies in cosmetology, interior design, and a myriad of crafting pursuits. Her creative spirit seamlessly carried over into her professional life as an agribusiness bookkeeper, where her dedication and attention to detail were evident in every task.

Yet, above all her endeavors, she cherished her roles as a mother to her five remarkable daughters, the sons she gained, and as an adoring Grannie to her 16 treasured grandchildren. Her pride in her grandchildren was palpable—she delighted in their achievements, their growing independence, and the promise of their futures, often sharing heartfelt stories of their unique talents and joyful moments. Throughout her life, she dedicated herself wholeheartedly to her family, celebrating every accomplishment and milestone with profound joy and steadfast support.

She is lovingly survived by her daughters: Stephanie Shapland (Clint) of Scott City, Stacey Colbert (John) of Dodge City, Sara Thummel (Justin) of Plainville, Shannon York (Josh) of Scott City, and Shelby Hawkinson (Cole) of Ness City.

Her legacy also lives on in her grandchildren: Madison, Sebastian, Eric, Kendall, Hailey, Peyton, Dillon, Lillian, Greysen, Kaisen, Rowen, Olin, Levi, Cash, and Adley; her parents, Virgil and Louise of Ness City; her sisters, Karen Avery (Bob) of Wamego, Sharon Shields (Terry) of Houston, Myra Pfannenstiel (Craig) of Wichita, and Amy Jacobs (Neal) of Wichita; and her brothers, Virgil Windholz of Salina, Dave Windholz (Lori) of Ness City, and John Windholz (Stacy) of Bel Aire.

In a final, tender reunion, Janel now joins her grandson, Cade Andrew Thummel.

Visitation for friends and family will be on Sunday, March 2, 2025, from 5:00-7:00 PM at the Fitzgerald Funeral Home in Ness City. Celebration of life will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, March 3, 2025, at the United Methodist Church in Ness City. A luncheon and a graveside ceremony to follow, where we will gather to celebrate and honor her extraordinary life. Memorial contributions can be made to Janel’s Grandchildren Education Fund.

Janel’s unwavering faith and gentle strength carried her through many challenges, and her compassionate support was a beacon for those in need. Darlene &nbsp;Jerauld, age 90, passed away on Sunday, February 9, 2025, at the Good Samaritan Society in Ellis, Kansas. She was born on July 16, 1934, to Theodore &amp; Alma Almeyer Rapier. She was a lifelong resident of Leoti until recently moving to Ellis.

Darlene was a dedicated wife and mother. She was a Holy Cross Lutheran Church member and active in the Women's auxiliary. She sold Avon products for 48 years.

On June 20, 1954, she married Chester Jerauld in Scott City, Kansas. He passed away on August 17, 2012.

Darlene’s surviving family includes Two sons- Eldon &amp; Stephanie Jerauld of &nbsp;Hays, Kansas Lynn &amp; Debbie Jerauld of Benton, Kansas, her brother Jack &amp; Sheri Rapier of Wichita, Kansas, her sister Joyce Kidwell, nine grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

Darlene was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and one daughter, LoVona, and her siblings, Eugene &amp; Eva Rapier, Lavon &amp; Dean Nance, and Shirley &amp; Bud Reed.

Memorials may be made to “Holy Cross Lutheran Church” in Care of Price and Sons Funeral Home, PO Box 161, Leoti, KS 67861.

Clifford J. “Cliff” Kreutzer, 84, Ellis, died Saturday, February 22, 2025, at his home.

He was born February 26, 1940, in Yocemento, the son of Aloysius Jr. “Aloys” and Cecelia (Braun) Kreutzer.&nbsp; Cliff grew up on the family farm north of Ellis and attended the one-room Locust Grove School.

In 1959, he was united in marriage to Katharine Zimmerman, and they were blessed with four children, Douglas, Rebecca, Rosalind, and Rita Mae.&nbsp; On May 9, 1981, he was united in marriage to Nancy A. Bice in Plainville.&nbsp; 

They celebrated 43 years of marriage and were blessed with two children, Joseph and Jessica.&nbsp; Cliff was a cattle rancher and farmer, worked in the oil field for 43 years, and did construction work.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, loved animals, especially cats, and enjoyed camping, fishing, and bird watching.&nbsp; Cliff was a talented singer and musician who played the accordion, harmonica, and guitar.

He liked polka music and playing in a band with his uncle.&nbsp; Most of all, Cliff loved his wife, children, and grandchildren unconditionally.

Survivors include his wife Nancy of the home, two sons, Douglas Kreutzer and wife Pam of Hays and Joseph Kreutzer of Ellis, four daughters, Rebecca Herzog and husband Arthur of Hays, Rosalind Werth and husband Craig of Hays, Rita Mae Hefner and husband Michael of Colorado Springs, CO, and Jessica Kreutzer of Hays, two brothers, Nicholas Kreutzer of Bloomington, IN and Francis Kreutzer of Ellis, a sister, Elizabeth Kreutzer of Ellis, a sister-in-law, Susan Augustine and husband Bruce of Plainville, 9 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Katharine, a sister, Cecelia Crawford, a sister-in-law, Ruth Kreutzer, and three grandsons, Derreck L., Devin A., and Dexter B. Urban.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am on Friday, February 28, 2025 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ellis with Fr. Dana Clark officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow in the Hyacinth Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 8:00 on Thursday at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home and from 9:00 am until service time on Friday at the church.

A vigil service and rosary will be at 6:30 pm on Thursday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to St. Mary’s Catholic Church or to the Humane Society of the High Plains.

Freshly made, crispy and golden, Pecking Order is bringing a new take on fried chicken with a bold new identity to Hays.

Pecking Order, 2401 Vine St., opens Wednesday under the direction of Chef Austin Petz and the team from his other establishment, Verdant Bistro.

"We needed to come in and create a whole new identity. I find that extremely important when doing restaurants," Petz said. "This is a whole new management and whole new ball game at the end of the day."

Petz emphasized a new era for the establishment as he takes it under his wing with a complete interior and menu transformation.

The interior has been reimagined, moving from the previous bright pink and green color scheme to a fresh, modern design that better reflects the new brand.

Petz said he is bringing to Pecking Order a menu expansion to include high-quality ingredients and chef-curated recipes.

"All of our chicken sandwiches are going to be really great, but what is going to stand out very differently than all the others is going to be our Pecking chicken roll," he said.

The Pecking chicken roll is a chicken tender in a hot dog bun that Petz said is more affordable for customers.

Other menu items include classic chicken sandwiches, Pecking chicken sandwiches, fancy chicken sandwiches, jumbo nuggets, wings and drumsticks. Spice options range from mild to extra hot.

Other plans for Pecking Orders include 50-cent wing deals, limited-time offers to keep things fresh, student discounts and an in-store kiosk for quicker service.

Petz said preparing to open Pecking Orders has been challenging, with delays due to weather conditions and tight budgeting. With the numerous changes, he hopes to change how customers approach the chicken joint.

"I hear tremendously that there's not a lot of parking here and that's absolutely true. What we're trying to do is push people more towards carry out, delivery and take out," Petz said.

Petz is striving to distinguish Pecking Order from past ownership and Kluckin' Chicken but acknowledges the contributions of Jacob Proffitt.

"I want to give him a lot of credit. He's been a great guy through this entire process, and he's done a lot for this community," he said.

In addition to Pecking Order and <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Verdant.Bistro">Verdant Bistro</a>, Petz also owns <a href="https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61565800494586">Tiger Station</a> and <a href="https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61555862908901">Shirley’s German To Go</a>, which he acquired in a package deal.

Kluckin’ Chicken closed on Jan. 1 due to financial struggles, declining customer interest and branding challenges, prompting a complete rebrand that Petz aims to establish as a standout in Hays.

Pecking Order is open&nbsp;from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays.&nbsp;

Pecking Order brings chef-driven fried chicken to Hays

TOPEKA — A documentary about a local central Kansas attraction received a 2nd place award in the recently announced Festival of Media Arts competition. 

The Garden of Eden, located in Lucas earned this prestigious award in the short form documentary category. 

The awards were announced by the Broadcast Education Association (Washington, DC) for projects completed in 2024. The BEA Festival is the preeminent international media competition focused on student and faculty creative endeavors. Over 1,700 submissions were entered in 60 different categories ranging from audio, video, interactive multimedia, news, scriptwriting and sports. 

Ryan Schuckman, a graduate of Hays High School and a junior in the Department of Informatics at Fort Hays State University created the documentary by researching the project, shooting the rough footage, obtaining supplemental historical images, editing the footage and mixing the final audio/video piece.&nbsp;He also arranged and conducted the interview with Ericka Nelson, the Cultural Resources Director for the Garden of Eden.

The documentary has been featured on Smoky Hills PBS, Bunker Hill, Tiger Media Network and various other social media sites. 

The Broadcast Education Association (BEA) is an international academic media organization promoting excellence in media production and career advancement for educators, students and professionals. The BEA is devoted to multimedia research and teaching, and retains the historical purpose to prepare college students interested in telecommunications and electronic mass media for careers in radio and television.&nbsp;

National award for FHSU student for Garden of Eden documentary

Ellis County has been hosting annual Severe Weather/Storm Spotter Preparedness Presentations for staff and the general public to attend and it is that time of year again.

The National Weather Service in Dodge City will be putting on the presentations at the Ellis County Emergency Services Building, located at 1105 E. 22nd St., Hays, KS 67601, in the basement training/EOC room. 

The presentations will be on Thursday, March 6. There will be two times available for personnel and the public to attend. The first presentation will begin at 3 p.m. with the next beginning at 6 p.m.

There is no registration necessary and those interested need only report to the above location prior to either start time. The presentations will be approximately one hour in length and cover the basics of Kansas weather. These preparedness talks are great for the seasoned storm chaser and those who are new to Kansas weather. Please consider attending if the weather has ever interested you!

Ellis County hosts storm spotting training for March 6

Sixteen students, eight faculty members, and three administrators from Fort Hays State University traveled to Manhattan for the 23rd annual Kansas IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (K-INBRE) Symposium, held on January 17-19. This event, led by the University of Kansas Medical Center, aims to prepare and inspire promising students for careers in bioscience.

FHSU participants, along with those of nine other institutions in Kansas and Oklahoma, presented their research through oral and poster presentations over the course of the event.

Presenting my work during the poster sessions was exciting, and the highlight of the conference was receiving an Award of Excellence for my presentation."About K-INBRE:K-INBRE&nbsp;is a multi-disciplinary network designed to inspire undergraduates to pursue careers in biomedical research, enhance research capacity through faculty development and retention, and expand the biomedical research infrastructure connecting several academic institutions.
