馃弨 Hays completes sweep of Dodge City on Tuesday

Hays High's final road trip of the regular season was trip to Dodge City on Tuesday.

#4 Hays 60, Dodge City 15

Hays used a big run in each of the first two quarter to create separation from Dodge City on the way to a 60-15 victory.

Hays yielded the first two points to injured senior Tatum Steiner following the tipoff on Senior Night for the Red Demons. Hays trailed once more at 4-3 before going on their first big run.

The Indians scored 13 straight points to take a lead they would never give back. Hays led 16-4 after their first big run of the second half and 21-9 after the first quarter.

Dodge City's only two points of the second quarter were the first points of the frame. Hays scored the next 15 points and led 36-11 at halftime.

Highlights

Hays didn't allow a field goal in the second quarter, outscoring the Red Demons 16-1. The Indians led by a score of 52-12 going the fourth quarter meaning the final stanza was played with a running clock.

The Indians still outscored Dodge City 8-3 for the final of 60-15.

Dodge City(1-18, 0-7) managed just five made field goals. It is the tenth opponent to have single digit made field goals against the Indians. Hays(19-0, 7-0) forced a season high 38 turnovers. 

The victory gives Hays the Western Athletic title outright with one game remaining against Great Bend on Friday.

Hays 62, Dodge City 47

Hays used a big second half to pull away from Dodge City in a 62-47 win on the road Tuesday.

Hays scored the first six points of the game only to be countered by nine straight by Dodge City. The Indians followed that run up with one of their own. This time a 10-0 run gave the Indians 16-9 advantage.

Hays led 20-14 heading into the second quarter. The Red Demons controlled that frame outscoring Hays 17-11. The Indians led 27-24 but turned the ball over their next five possessions. Dodge City had just enough punch to score six straight points for a 30-27 advantage.

Hays broke a three and a half minute scoring drought  with four straight points regaining a 31-30 edge. The Red Demons made one of two free throws to tie the game at 31 at halftime.

Highlights

Hays scored the first five points of the second half and never trailed again. Dawson Ruder scored all five of those points on a night when he scored a career high 27.

Dodge City pulled within two points at 38-36 on a pair of free throws with 2:48 left in the third quarter. The remainder of the time Hays outscored Dodge City 8-2 to take a 46-38 lead going to the fourth quarter.

Hays took an early ten point lead in the fourth quarter before the Red Demons made one more push. They scored back-to-back field goals to get within six at 48-42 with 6:45 remaining.

The Indians dominated the remainder of the game ending it with a 14-5 run for the 62-47 victory.

Hays(12-7, 6-1) shot 50% from the field and held a 14 rebound margin. Dodge City(5-14, 2-5) shot 7 of 21 in the second half after 12 of 23 in the first.

Hays will host Great Bend on Friday to finish the regular season on Senior Night.
