Fort Hays State Football moved up in the latest D2Football.com Top 25 Poll to No. 20, the position they started the season in, after a 26-7 win over Nebraska-Kearney in the MIAA opener this past weekend. Now 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the MIAA, the Tigers will face No. 10 ranked Pittsburg State (1-2, 0-1 MIAA) this Saturday (Sept. 20) in Pittsburg. FHSU continues to receive votes in the latest AFCA Top 25 Poll.

Fort Hays State will be the fourth-straight ranked opponent Pittsburg State faces to open the 2025 season. The Gorillas are ranked in both of the latest AFCA and D2Football.com Top 25 Polls. The Gorillas hold a No. 18 ranking in the latest AFCA poll. Pittsburg State started the year with a loss to the No. 1 team in the country, Ferris State, then lost their MIAA opener on the road to a then No. 19/17 ranked Central Oklahoma squad. The Gorillas bounced back last week for a win over then No. 3/5 ranked Grand Valley State when they held a No. 24 ranking by the AFCA and No. 16 by D2Football.com. The win moved the Gorillas back up in both polls this week to No. 18/10.

The Tigers will be looking to snap a four-game losing string to the Gorillas on Saturday. FHSU's last win in Pittsburg was in 2019, when the Gorillas held a No. 19/21 ranking.

🏈 Tigers up to No. 20 in D2Football.com ranking, still receiving votes in AFCA poll

&nbsp;Laverne 'Sonny' H. Schoenthaler
and Carolyn M. Mohr Schoenthaler

Laverne was born May 3, 1931, to Frederick (Bill) and Zeta
(Duncan) Schoenthaler at Hays Hospital. He was baptized and confirmed at Christ
Lutheran Church in Ellis, Kansas. At an early age, he was given the nickname 'Sonny,' a name so familiar that many friends never knew him by any other. He
grew up in Trego County and remained there his entire life. A proud member of
the Trego Community High School class of 1949, known as the '49ers,' he enjoyed
sports and participated in both football and track. He went on to spend his
life farming and ranching. Laverne passed away on September 11, 2025, at Trego
County-Lemke Memorial Hospital Long Term Care.

Carolyn Mae Mohr was born June 11, 1933, on the family farm
west of WaKeeney, to Jacob and Bertha (Struss) Mohr. She was baptized and
confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. She attended Old Bosna Country School
and graduated from Trego Community High School in 1951. Carolyn loved sewing
dresses for her daughters and was known for her delicious pies, especially
coconut cream and chocolate cream. Carolyn passed away on September 12, 2025,
at her home.

On December 28, 1951, Sonny and Carolyn were united in
marriage at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in WaKeeney. They made their home on the
Schoenthaler family farm, seven miles southeast of WaKeeney, where they lived
until moving to Keeney Village four years ago.

Together they raised three children: Cindy, Janelle, and
Steve. They were active leaders in 4-H and members of the WaKeeney Saddle Club,
where they enjoyed participating in fairs, horse shows, and community events,
earning many trophies and ribbons along the way. Sonny served his community as
a church council member, Saddle Club officer, Trego Center School Board member,
Farmers Union officer, and for many years as a WaKeeney Township Board member.
He also worked penning cattle at the Sale Barn on Tuesdays. Carolyn contributed
her skills as secretary and bookkeeper at the WaKeeney Animal Clinic and the
WaKeeney Sale Barn office.

Farming and ranching were more than just work to Sonny and
Carolyn—they were a way of life they loved. They even named many of their cows
and had favorite pets, especially their dogs, Odie and Tootsie, who rarely left
their side. In their free time, they enjoyed playing cards, bingo, and visiting
casinos. Sonny especially cherished watching their grandchildren and
great-grandchildren play sports.

They are survived by their children: Steve (Heather)
Schoenthaler of WaKeeney, Cindy (Bill) Level of WaKeeney, and Janelle (Steve)
Riedy of Salina; grandchildren—Kyle (Sage) Level, Kerah (Shawn) Deines of
WaKeeney, Brent (Amber) Riedy of Andover, Shauna (Tyler) Smith of Salina, Deven
Schoenthaler of Ashland, Massachusetts, Emarie Schoenthaler of Raleigh, North
Carolina, and Noah Oborny of Iowa; great-grandchildren—Graeden and Hudson
Deines, Kamdyn Reynolds of WaKeeney, Shawna Deines and son James of Colby, Braxton,
Mason, and Jensen Riedy of Andover, and Blakely and Everly Smith of Salina;
brother Ernie (Leanna) Mohr of DeSoto, Kansas; and brother-in-law Leroy Engel
of Westminster, Colorado, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Laverne was preceded in death by his parents; sisters
Shirley Engel and Ruth Benisch, and Ruth’s husband George. Carolyn was preceded
in death by her parents; brothers Alvin (Freida) Mohr and Martin (Ella) Mohr;
and sisters Marie (Kenneth) Lahmann and Wilma (Ernest) Dietz.

Sonny and Carolyn’s lives were beautifully intertwined for
more than seventy-three years, and in God’s grace, they entered eternal rest
just one day apart—together forever as they had always been.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday,
September 17, 2025, at Schmitt Funeral Home, 336 North 12th Street, WaKeeney,
Kansas 67672. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service, from 9:30
a.m. to 10:30 a.m. A procession to WaKeeney City Cemetery will immediately
follow the funeral service, where the committal will take place.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to
Bethlehem Lutheran Church and sent to Schmitt Funeral Home, 336 North 12th

The Ellis County Commission will have a public hearing before deciding on a proposed reinvestment housing incentive district for Big Creek Estates 3rd Addition during its 8:30 a.m. meeting on Tuesday.

The hearing will allow community input before the commission decides whether to approve the resolution and the development agreement.

The project includes road improvements on Reservation Road and has received 25 protest petitions. There is no financial impact to the county in approving the housing incentive district.

Commissioners will be asked to approve a resolution that would authorize the county counselor to initiate foreclosure proceedings on properties with delinquent real estate taxes.

A list provided by the county treasury includes 15 properties with a combined total of $44,394.56 in taxes, penalties and interest owed.

The City of Gorham will request approval for the county public works department to assist with a road rehabilitation project. The project would not create significant direct costs to the county beyond staff time and machinery.

Jeff Ridgway, county communication director, will recognize Dispatcher Rachel Barnes with the Stork award for her exceptional response to a 911 call on April 5 before emergency responders arrived.

Barnes calmly guided the caller through the birth process and afterward during a 16-minute call. This is the second time she has received the award.

Commissioners will be asked to approve a new contract with County Counselor Bill Jeter, effective Jan. 1. The agreement increases Jeter's monthly retainer&nbsp;by $500, from $5,500 to $6,000. The change was initiated by the commission, not by Jeter, and is already included in the 2026 budget.&nbsp;

County EMS will request approval to accept bids from R Enterprise for remounting two ambulances scheduled for replacement in 2025 and 2026, which would be a cost-saving alternative to purchasing new units. An EMS Fund would cover the total cost.

Commissioners will appoint a new member to the Ellis County Library Board to fill a vacancy effective Oct.1. The appointment will run until April 30.&nbsp;

Hays residents gathered at the corner of Vine and 27th on Sunday to honor Charlie Kirk and what they said was his commitment to peaceful discussions.

Adam Peters, chairman of the Ellis County GOP, said he attended the event because Kirk was killed for his faith and principles.

"He believed that we need to follow God, be faithful and reflect that love in others," Peters said. "He believed in the Constitution, the First Amendment, and the right to speak freely. He died while exercising that right."

Kirk co-founded the nonprofit political organization Turning Point USA, based in Arizona. He was killed by a single shot at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10 during a debate.

"Charlie was a man who by all accounts was a decent husband, father and faithful Christian," Peters said.

Tyler Robinson, 22, was arrested Thursday after a family member of Robinson reached out to a family friend with information that Robinson had “confessed” or implied involvement in the shooting,&nbsp;Utah Gov. Spencer Cox&nbsp;told reporters Friday.

Kayson Unsworth attended Sunday’s event to pay his respects, calling Kirk an American icon who helped many young men.

"I initially felt anger, then sadness and now it's encouragement," Unsworth said.

Unsworth emphasized the need for open debate across political lines, cautioning against the formation of echo chambers.

He compares Kirk’s death to the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.

"I think it's very similar... hopefully it moves us forward and we can just unite under freedom of speech," Unsworth said.

David Koshiol said he first came across Kirk on social media and admired his work to protect children from what he called “the trans ideology movement.”

Koshiol said the assassination was shocking yet not unexpected in the current political climate.

"I immediately thought that this was bad for our country," he said. "I feel like this is going to be pushing people on both sides towards the other."

Koshiol said although Kirk is gone, the conservative movement will carry on. He also emphasized the importance of open discourse and unity.

"We're all neighbors and live together. We're all sharing the same city and country. We have to learn to work together and do it&nbsp;as harmoniously as we can," he said.

"Charlie Kirk was a fantastic figure for America," Taylor Wright said at Sunday's event. "He didn't deserve what he got."

Wright said she admired Kirk’s student debates and his openness in sharing God’s message.

"Don't be afraid to speak your mind. Even though it was a horrible outcome for Charlie, you shouldn't be afraid to have your own freedom of speech in this country," Wright said.

Unsworth, Koshial and Wright expressed regret or wished that they could have met Kirk. A Facebook event listed <a href="https://www.facebook.com/elliscountyksgop">Ellis County Republican Party</a> and <a href="https://www.facebook.com/kansasrepublicanparty">Kansas Republican Party</a> as organizers of the event.&nbsp;

Commodities will be distributed on a first-come-first-serve basis until we run out.&nbsp;Doors will not open until 7:30 a.m.

⚽ No. 22 Tiger men post third shutout, defeat Thomas More

HAYS, Kan. —Fort Hays State women's soccer earned a 3-0 victory over Southwest Minnesota State on Sunday afternoon at FHSU Soccer Stadium. It was the first win of the season for FHSU, now 1-3 overall, while SMSU fell to 1-2 on the season.

The Tigers wasted no time establishing control, taking the lead in the fourth minute when Sydney Cotter converted a penalty shot after being fouled inside the box. Fort Hays continued to dominate throughout the opening half, outshooting the Mustangs 8-2, but SMSU goalkeeper Kennady Krebs made two key saves to keep the deficit at just one heading into the break.

Fort Hays State extended its advantage after halftime with back-to-back goals in a five-minute span. Saylor Richard doubled the lead in the 59th minute on a long ball from midfield that bounced just right in the box up over the head of the SMSU keeper and into the corner of the net. Chaley French added the third goal in the 64th minute, recollecting a ball she looked to pass in the box and then fired up over the keeper's head.

Sydney Cotter led the Tigers with six shots, including two on goal. Taylor Hill and Berit Shores each followed with three shots in the match. Hadley Ostrander recorded her first career shutout with one save over 90 minutes.

The Tigers return to action on Thursday (Sept. 18) when they host New Mexico Highlands at FHSU Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

⚽Tiger women score three goals in shutout of Mustangs

High Plains Independence was able to make its payroll for August, allowing it to stay open another month while it waits for its nonprofit status to be reinstated.

The agency that provides&nbsp;support for people with severe mental illnesses in Hays has temporarily lost its funding from the Kansas Department of Aging and Disability Services because of a paperwork error.

All of the organization's services are free.

After a recent audit of the Kansas Department of Aging and Disability, which funds Consumer Run Organizations, High Plains Independence was informed it had not filed the necessary 990 forms with the IRS to maintain its nonprofit status, Ginna Anderson, High Plains Independence executive director, said.

Anderson said she is working with a new accountant to file the proper paperwork to have the group's nonprofit status reinstated and is making progress.

The group is still facing a wait of three to six months before all the paperwork can be processed.

The group received about $5,000 in donations in August to keep the organization running.

&nbsp;"I appreciate what they've done," Anderson said.

However, she said, "Now we have to start over in September."

"We are going to stay open as long as we can," Anderson said this week. ... "I refuse to give up. God did not bring us this far to drop us in the muck."

Mental Health support program remains open, still in limbo after paperwork error

SYLVAN – The TMP-Marian Monarchs volleyball team earned a
second-place finish Saturday at the Sylvan-Lucas tournament.

The Monarchs opened with a 3-0 record in pool play.

They defeated Lakeside (25-16, 25-18), Logan-Palco (25-11,
25-10) and Sylvan-Lucas (25-15, 27-25) to reach the championship match.

In the championship, the Monarchs fell in two sets 11-25 and
22-25.

HAYS, Kan. - David Arriaga booted four field goals and Michael Polley had a key interception return for a touchdown to help Fort Hays State to a 26-7 win over Nebraska-Kearney in front of 6,726 on Saturday night at Lewis Field.

The Tigers (2-1, 1-0 MIAA) capitalized on a strong defensive effort highlighted by a 78-yard interception return for a touchdown by Michael Polley and built a 26-0 lead before the Lopers (2-1, 0-1 MIAA) scored its touchdown late. FHSU has won seven straight at home over UNK dating back to 2005 and have won 12 of the last 13 vs. the Lopers.

After going 3-and-out on their first two possession, Fort Hays State put together a methodical 11-play, 70-yard drive, culminating in a two-yard rushing touchdown by Travis Dixon to take a 7-0 lead. The Tigers&nbsp;extended its lead to 17-0 by halftime. David Arriaga successfully converted a 42-yard field goal and added an extra point following Michael Polley's 78-yard interception return for a touchdown.

The Tigers extended its lead to 23-0 with two Arriaga field goals from 38 and 34 yards. The first field goal was set up after Parrish Terry forced a fumble on UNK's first drive of the half which was recovered by Jalen Williams. John Johnson and Kayson Dietz each had sacks in the quarter, with Dietz's stop creating a turnover on downs.

Arriaga supplied his final field goal of the night from 27 yards with 4:05 to play. to push the lead to 26-0. The Lopers drove 65 yards for their only score on an eight-yard touchdown run by Jahmez Ross.&nbsp;

The Lopers outgained the Tigers by two yards and each team had a 100-yard rusher. Travis Dixon pounded out 110 yards for the Tigers before leaving in the fourth quarter with an apparent knee injury. Isaiah Harris rushed for 107 for the Lopers.&nbsp;Caleb Heavner completed 17-of-28 passes for 134 yards. Ryan Allen led the Tigers with four receptions for 47 yards.&nbsp;

John Johnson had seven tackles and a sack to lead the Tiger defense. Jalen Williams added six tackles and a fumble recovery.&nbsp;

Fort Hays State will travel to take on another ranked team next week when it plays at Pittsburg State. The No. 24/16 ranked Gorillas knocked off No. 3/5 ranked Grand Valley State on Saturday in non-conference play. Game time is set for 4 p.m. in Pittsburg on Saturday, September 20.

PHILLIPSBURG - Smith Center leaned on defense, a timely passing strike, and an 18-play clock-draining drive in the fourth quarter to grind out a 16-14 victory over Phillipsburg Friday night in a Mid-Continent League rivalry matchup.

The Redmen (2-0) built an early lead and survived a second-half push from the Panthers (1-1), who were playing with senior quarterback Colin Springer back under center after missing Week 1.

Smith Center struck first in unusual fashion. After forcing a three-and-out, a high snap on Phillipsburg's punt sailed into the end zone, where Brady Desbien fell on it for a touchdown. The two-point conversion made it 8-0 with 2:45 left in the first quarter.

The Redmen wasted no time adding on. Early in the second quarter, quarterback Parker Hutchinson connected with Cole McKelvey on a 67-yard scoring pass, stretching the lead to 16-0.

Phillipsburg answered before halftime. Springer broke free on a designed run for a 28-yard touchdown, then added the conversion to cut it to 16-8. After a Hutchinson fumble, the Panthers drove into the red zone late in the half behind two completions to Cleveland Corman, but a sack from Smith Center linebacker Isaiah Haack stalled the drive.

In the second half, both teams leaned entirely on the run game. Phillipsburg's 12-play 64-yard march was capped by Springer's second rushing touchdown, a 7-yarder that made it 16-14 with 10:46 left. But the two-point try was stuffed by the Redmen defense, proving to be the difference.&nbsp;

From there, Smith Center never gave the ball back. Starting from their own 18, the Redmen methodically chewed up the final 10:46 on an 18-play drive, converting twice on third down and twice more on fourth down to seal the win. Neither team attempted a pass in the second half.

Hutchinson finished 2 of 3 passing for 76 yards and a touchdown while rushing 11 times for 46 yards. Riley Griffin Powers added 57 yards on 10 carries, and Brant Wilson chipped in 52 yards on 15 attempts.

By GARRETT WELLBROCK Hays Post SportsPHILLIPSBURG - Smith Center leaned on defense, a timely passing strike, and an 18-play clock-draining drive in the fourth quarter to grind out a 16-14 victory over Phillipsburg Friday night in a Mid-Continent League rivalry matchup.The Redmen (2-0) built an early lead and survived a second-half push from the Panthers (1-1), who were playing with senior quarterback Colin Springer back under center after missing Week 1.Smith Center struck first in unusual fashion. After forcing a three-and-out, a high snap on Phillipsburg's punt sailed into the end zone, where Brady Desbien fell on it for a touchdown. The two-point conversion made it 8-0 with 2:45 left in the first quarter.The Redmen wasted no time adding on. Early in the second quarter, quarterback Parker Hutchinson connected with Cole McKelvey on a 67-yard scoring pass, stretching the lead to 16-0.Phillipsburg answered before halftime. Springer broke free on a designed run for a 28-yard touchdown, then added the conversion to cut it to 16-8. After a Hutchinson fumble, the Panthers drove into the red zone late in the half behind two completions to Cleveland Corman, but a sack from Smith Center linebacker Isaiah Haack stalled the drive.In the second half, both teams leaned entirely on the run game. Phillipsburg's 12-play 64-yard march was capped by Springer's second rushing touchdown, a 7-yarder that made it 16-14 with 10:46 left. Astra Bank relocated from downtown Hays to a newly built location to better serve its customers.&nbsp;

The Chamber in Hays held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday to celebrate the opening with Jason Kennedy, Astra Bank market president, and the CEO of Astra Bank, Kyle Campbell.

"We truly believe as a family-owned community bank that we should invest in the community because we're never going to be more successful than the communities we serve," Campbell said.&nbsp;

Astra Bank’s new location, 2605 Main St., features better accessibility, wider drive-through lanes and increased personal interaction with customers. Kennedy said the relocation idea began during a casual conversation with Doug Williams, executive director of Grow Hays, and the city.

"It was kind of off-handed when the city was looking at the police station. I said 'Why don't you guys buy my building? Let's do a swap and we'll develop on that lot," Kennedy said.

Kennedy said the relocation arrangement saved the city taxpayers' money. The former Astra Bank building at 1100 Fort will be repurposed as a new police and municipal court facility.

Kennedy emphasized that the bank serves as a commercial and community bank, supporting agriculture, local businesses and civic projects.

"Anything you can find at any other bank, we do here as well. We just do it better," Kennedy said.

The bank opened its new location on Aug. 18. To celebrate, Astra Bank is offering a 10% three-month CD, limited to one per household, available from Sept. 12 to 19 for the first 100 households.

Kennedy said Astra Bank kept operations running without interruption during the move, continuing to serve customers.

"My staff was not just patient. They were phenomenal," he said.

The bank lobby is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the drive-through is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
