Wichita - Blue Valley Southwest scored early and often to take the third place trophy home as they beat Hays High 12-0 in five innings.

Hays had just one hit in the run-rule loss. A Jalen Smith single in the fourth inning was the Indians only hit. Southwest limited the Hays to just five total baserunners.&nbsp;

The Indians used four pitchers in the loss. Trace Jacobs, Ian McGuire, Brett Rhoades and Jalen Smith each spent time on the mound.&nbsp;

The Timberwolves used an eleven hit attack in the victory. They recorded three doubles and three triples.&nbsp;

Hays finishes the season at 19-10 while Southwest ends the year at 23-6.

It is the ninth top four finish for the Indians in program history.&nbsp;

⚾ Hays finishes fourth in 5A

Wichita - St. Thomas Aquinas scored five runs in the fifth inning to blow open a close game and end Hays High's chances at a state title.

The day prior in the semifinals Hays had used a big five run fifth inning on their way to a quarterfinal win. The top seeded Saints turned the tables on the Indians in the semifinals.&nbsp;

Aquinas scored a single run in the bottom of the first inning and added two more in the third. Hays didn't get their first baserunner until the fourth when Jalen Smith hit a double. The Indians again got a runner into scoring position in the fifth. Ian McGuire laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Brett Rhoades into scoring position.

Hays though couldn't take advantage. The Saints turned the three run game into an eight run advantage with five runs in the fifth. All seven of their hits in the inning were singles.

Trace Jacobs drove in Johnny Cano and Jalen Smith with a two-run double in the top of the sixth. Aquinas put three runs back onto the board in their half of the inning for an 11-2 lead.

Karsen Flaska worked his way around the bases in the top of the seventh to score the game's final run at 11-3.

Aquinas (26-4) gets the chance to defend their 5A championship. Hays (19-9) will play for third place around 3:30.

Johnny Cano (5-2) went 4 2/3 innings for the Indians. Trenton Welch pitched the final 1 1/3. Nic Sabers struck out nine batters in his start for the Saints.

Garden’s Brown repeats as Girls Athlete of the Year

When Kip Keely was promoted to the head track coach at Hays High School after serving two years as an assistant to Tony Crough, he knew he was walking into a solid program.

After all, the Lady Indians had just completed one of their best seasons in 2024 by finishing second in the Western Athletic Conference meet to champion Great Bend. In fact, they were only 15.5 points behind the Lady Panthers in the final points race.

Now, a year later, Keely can chalk up his first WAC championship after holding off Garden City, 95-88, to earn the team’s first conference title since 2005.

“I think our success is combination of many things,” said Keely. “We have really good coaches and we’ve got a great group of kids. We are fortunate in the way we set things up with our coaches, especially in the field events where a coach only has one event for which they are responsible.

“That allows them to spend more time in working on the techniques of each event and don’t have to be pulled to other events.”

That philosophy worked well for Keely and the Indians this year, scoring 56 points in six of the seven field events and then tacked on 39 points in the track events for their 95 points.

“Everything was where we wanted it to be,” Keely said of the field event performances.&nbsp;

Of the seven field events, the Indians took first in four — the high jump, long jump, javelin and shot put. They went 1-2 in both the high jump and the long jump. The only event where they didn’t score came in the discus.

“We’ve got a lot of kids that we begin to identify their event early on in their freshman and sophomore years and can specialize with them,” Keely said. “Many of our girls play other sports where they have success. Most of our coaches are at the high school and they do a great job of encouraging kids to come out and try the sport. For many of our kids, track is a secondary sport and for others it is their primary sport.”

Katie Linenberger captured the high jump at 5-06 and is one of the tops in her event in Class 5A. Lynsi Kanak took the long jump at 17-05.75 while Rylen Harrington captured the javelin (124-11) and Zoe Winter the shot put (38-10).

Additionally, the Lady Indians secured three runner-up finishes in the field events. On the track, the results were a mixed bag.

Kamryn McCall (25.65) and Lyndi Zimmerman (25.81) went 2-3 in the 200-meter dash and then the two switched places in the 100-meters (Zimmerman second, 12.25) and McCall (12.41, third). The only gold medalist on the track came from Aralen Maupin in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:00.28.

In her first two years of running high school track, Garden City’s Hailey Brown showed promise of greatness, only to be derailed by injuries near the end of each season.

By the time her junior season rolled around in 2024, Brown remained healthy by a variety of workouts and entering different events each week while not competing in all of her four specialties — the 100- and 200-meter dashes and the long and triple jumps.

“Last year, I knew things were starting to come together, but I wasn’t quite confident,” said Brown, who earned her second WAC Girls Track Athlete of the Year Award after claiming gold medals in her three individual events (100, 12.02), (200, 24.91) and triple jump (36-08) at this year’s conference meet.

Head coach Brian Hill convinced Brown to abandon the long jump and substitute running the third leg of a young, talented 4×400-meter relay team. That paid off as the Lady Buffs won that event in 4:02.94 where the senior Brown paired up with sophomores ThayLee Powers and Erin Finch and junior Ava Luna.

“Just making the switch to the relay team has been a lot of fun,” said Brown of her younger teammates. “I enjoy them and it feels good to be part of a team. And they are really good and I think we’ve got a good relay team. They’re like my little sisters.”

Brown even admitted that she struggled with how to use the blocks for her two sprint races. It was only until recently in her senior season that she switched to her lead foot coming out of the blocks, going from leading with her left to her right.

“It makes all the difference in the world,” Brown said. “Now, my feet and arms are working together and it has allowed me to run faster. Now, it feels like I can explode out of the blocks.”

She broke the school record set in 1981 by Bobbi Greenlee in the 100-meters at the WAC meet, clocking a 12.02 that erased the 44-year mark of 12.20. At the same meet she came within .01 of a second of breaking the 1977 time of 24.90 set by Lady Buffs legendary JoEva Tuttle.

While she excels in both, Brown says she thinks the 200 is her best event of the two sprints.

“I’ve improved on it a lot more,” she said of the 200. “I like coming off the curve and then it feels like a slingshot. I had to keep telling myself it would come. I would do everything the coaches told me to do, but sometimes I’d just get in my own head.”

Breaking the 100-meter school record was a meaningful and somewhat surprising moment for Brown, who has signed to run at Fort Hays State University next year.

“It’s been my goal now for two years and I think I was in shock after I got the 100 record,” Brown said. “I was just as shocked at my 200.”

The triple jump is always a work in progress, Brown said, noting that the three elements are all different.

“The first phase (hop) is good and then I transition into the second (skip/step), and then I’m trying to elevate as much as I can for the third phase (jump),” Brown said. “It does get a little complicated but I’ve gotten more consistent this season.”

Now, as she enters the final weeks of her senior season, Brown can look back and appreciate the journey.

“I had no idea when I was just a little freshman that I would be where I am today,” Brown said. “Getting a chance to compete at state is a great honor and I just want to have a good finish to my career.”

While undecided as to her academic pursuit at FHSU, Brown says she can visualize something in sports exercises or athletic training, having worked with GCHS athletic trainer Mattie Silva.

“I’m sure it will have something to do with sports,” Brown said.

For now, she can appreciate her two-year dominance at the Western Athletic Conference track and field meet.

I would do everything the coaches told me to do, but sometimes I’d just get in my own head.”Breaking the 100-meter school record was a meaningful and somewhat surprising moment for Brown, who has signed to run at Fort Hays State University next year.“It’s been my goal now for two years and I think I was in shock after I got the 100 record,” Brown said. “I was just as shocked at my 200.”The triple jump is always a work in progress, Brown said, noting that the three elements are all different.“The first phase (hop) is good and then I transition into the second (skip/step), and then I’m trying to elevate as much as I can for the third phase (jump),” Brown said. “It does get a little complicated but I’ve gotten more consistent this season.”Now, as she enters the final weeks of her senior season, Brown can look back and appreciate the journey.“I had no idea when I was just a little freshman that I would be where I am today,” Brown said. “Getting a chance to compete at state is a great honor and I just want to have a good finish to my career.”While undecided as to her academic pursuit at FHSU, Brown says she can visualize something in sports exercises or athletic training, having worked with GCHS athletic trainer Mattie Silva.“I’m sure it will have something to do with sports,” Brown said.For now, she can appreciate her two-year dominance at the Western Athletic Conference track and field meet.<h2>Western Athletic ConferenceThursday, May 15, 2025At Memorial Stadium • Dodge City</h2>Girls Team Scores1. 👟 Hays girls claim WAC track title for first time in 20 years

Great Bend’s Ohnmacht takes Athlete of Year honors

There have been two periods of time in the 40-plus history of the Western Athletic Conference where one of the schools has dominated the annual Track &amp; Field Championship held in mid-May.

First, it was Liberal, which dominated the 1990s and early 2000’s. Now, it has been the Hays Indians, who just recently won their fifth straight and 10th in the last 15 years.

Liberal still holds the record for most boys’ titles with 19 and Hays is now at 13. Dodge City owns four crowns with Garden City and Great Bend one each.

This time, the Indians squeaked out a 95.5 to 94 victory over Garden City thanks in part to the Buffaloes not fielding a 4×400-meter relay team in the meet’s final event. That allowed the Indians to score four points in that race, rallying from a 94-91.5 deficit to claim the team title.

“I didn’t realize that Garden didn’t have a 4×4 team until the race was just getting to be run,” said Hays first-year coach Kip Keelyi. “It was certainly unexpected, but I thought our kids did a good job in scoring points in the events where we thought we would.”

In recent history, the Indians have dominated the WAC meet in the field events and this year’s event was no different. Of the 95.5 points, 61 of them came in the field events.

“We’re blessed to have some outstanding athletes who work hard on their strength, conditioning and fundamentals, and we’ve got a great group of coaches who specialize with each field event,” Keely said. “I think it helps because they can give more time to each athlete and not have to go from event to event at a meet.”

The Indians secured three first-place finishes of the seven field events, getting one in the high jump from Kamani Jones at 6-00; senior Dalton Meyers won the javelin with a toss of 183-09 and sophomore Gus Corsair took the discus at 145-03.

However, it was the depth of the Indians in those events that helped pave the way for the team triumph.

The Indians went 3-4 in the long jump, 2-5 in the triple jump; 1-3-4 in the discus; 1-2 in the javelin and 2-3-4 in the shot put.&nbsp;

“We’ve worked hard to develop the depth, and it showed in the WAC meet,” Keely said. “Our shot putters are young and getting better every week.”

The Indians produced one winner on the track and that came from senior Bryce Steffan in the 300-meter hurdles where he clocked a 40.66 to score eight points.

The 200-meters saw the Indians finish 3-4 with Jones in third (22.43) and Jarek Purdy in fourth (22.60).&nbsp;

“We’ve had some exceptional athletes to compete in track and field, but it might not be their No. 1 sport,” Keely said. “For others, track is their No. 1 sport. I think this time around the boys did what they were supposed to do.”

While the Indians claimed the team crown, it was Great Bend sophomore sensation Cooper Ohnmacht who grabbed the Track Athlete of The Year Award.

Great Bend sophomore Ohnmacht wins Athlete of Year

When Cooper Ohnmacht arrived for high school at Great Bend in the 2023-2024 school year, it was difficult to predict what his impact would have on Panther boys’ athletics.

With a stellar class one year ahead of him, Ohnmacht came in much under the radar until he started making big plays on the football field, finding his place on the Panthers’ basketball squad and then jumped right in for the track and field season.

His freshman success is no longer a secret.

Ohnmacht, who stands 6-00 tall but has a vertical jump much higher than normal, made the big splash at the 2024 KSHSAA Track and Field Championship by winning the triple jump, which has now become his staple event.

At the WAC Championship in Dodge City, Ohnmacht won the triple jump at 46-04.75 and the long jump at 21-04.25, finished second in the high jump at 5-10 and third in the javelin with a throw of 157-03. His 26 points were the most for any individual and secured his Athlete of the Year award.

“I was always a big baseball guy when I was a kid growing up,” Ohnmacht said in a telephone interview. “But I had quit that at about age 12 and started doing other sports, mainly football and basketball.”

Turning to track for the spring season, Ohnmacht said he needed to find something to stay in in good physical condition for the upcoming fall football campaign.

“I needed to do something, and I decided on track,” Ohnmacht said. “I started off with sprints, but then found the triple and long jumps and with my high vertical it just seemed the natural thing to do.”

Ohnmacht became a state champion in his first high school season, winning the triple jump and now owns one of the state’s best marks in the event at 48-03, which he did at the recent Class 5A regionals and is the No. 1 qualifier for the state meet in Wichita (May 30-31).

“The triple jump is a lot of technical elements and the long jump is not,” Ohnmacht said. “I just kind of throw the javelin and did the high jump just to earn some points for the team.”

His season best marks have been 22-10.75 in the long jump, 182-00 in the javelin and then his 5-10 high jump at WAC.

“I’m really not flexible enough to do well in the high jump,” Ohnmacht said. “I did that just to help get the team some points.”

Ohnmacht said his practice sessions can be extensive and intensive, going through each of the elements (hop, step, jump).

“When I’m at a meet, I tend to not think about it (technique) and let it get in my head,” Ohnmacht said. “The key in the first phase is to keep low in transition and not get too high. Next, I need to hop off quick and land flat-footed and then keep my hip up and be ready to explosive in the jump.”

Ohnmacht firmly believes that proper practice has him prepared for meets.

“If I do enough reps and they just come naturally, it helps me stay calm in the moment,” Ohnmacht said. “There are things in both football and basketball that help me in track and there are things in track that help me for the other two sports.”

In football and basketball, Ohnmacht is reliant on his teammates as they are reliant on him. In track, Ohnmacht said. It’s him vs. Himself.

“It’s Me vs. Myself or vs. The tape measure,” Ohnmacht said. “I just try to use my athleticism and implement the techniques that I work on.”

Ohnmacht has increased his triple jump distance by a foot from a year ago, when he won state with a leap of 47-03.25.&nbsp;

“I’m happy with what I’ve done so far, but I’m kind of the person who likes to strive for more,” Ohnmacht said. “I’m always hungry for more. I always want to get better and to succeed even more.”

duel in the opening round of the 2-1A state baseball tournament in Great Bend
on Thursday. When all was said and done, it was St. Mary’s Colgan getting the
best of the Monarchs, 2-0, to advance to the semifinals.

Vanbecelaere matched each other pitch for pitch for the better part of six
innings before the Panthers scratched two runs across in the top of the seventh
inning on their way to a 2-0 victory.Schmeidler found himself in trouble, with base runners in
the top of the first, thanks to an error and in the fourth, due to a walk and
an error, but each time he was able to escape unharmed.Schmeidler carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning and
had allowed just one walk and struck out 14 through six innings.But in the seventh, the Panthers took advantage of three
hits, scoring two runs on a pair of RBI singles.Vanbecelaere scattered four hits and three walks with 11
strikeouts in seven shutout innings in the Panthers' victory.He worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the
fifth, the only inning the Monarchs threatened, closing out the inning with
back-to-back strikeouts.Schmeidler suffered the loss. He allowed two runs, on three
hits with two walks and a career-high 15 strikeouts. TMP’s Caden Dinkel and Adler Brown finished the day 1-for-2
