Hays High's Ian McGuire and Dalton Meyers have been named to the Kansas Football Coaches Association 5A All-State football team and Tony Crough has been named 5A Coach of the Year.

McGuire played five positions on offense this past season and is listed as an athlete on the All-State team. He rushed for 890 yards on 163 carries with eight touchdowns. McGuire had five receptions for 271 yards and a touchdown. He moved to quarterback in the 5A sub-state and state title games and passed completed 6-of-14 passes for 81 yards, two touchdowns an one interception.

Meyers had 79 tackles and four sacks from his linebacker position along with 10 tackles for loss, three interceptions, three forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.

Crough adds the KFCA Coach of the Year honor to his Sports in Kansas 5A Coach of the Year honor he received over the weekend.

HHS defensive coordinator Kip Keeley was named 5A Assistant Coach of the Year.

A thunderous doink helped the Kansas City Chiefs gain some breathing room in the race for the No. 1 seed in the AFC after the Buffalo Bills fell short despite&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/bills-allen-rams-b5bc06f9441ecd1b38e714b320f565c5">Josh Allen’s spectacular performance</a>.

The fight for the top spot in the NFC stayed close as the Minnesota Vikings and Philadelphia Eagles kept pace with the Detroit Lions.

Four weeks remain in the NFL regular season to determine the playoff picture.

There’s a clear leader in the fight for the AFC’s bye. The two-time defending Super Bowl champion Chiefs (12-1) are in excellent position to secure home-field advantage throughout the playoffs after Matthew Wright drilled a 31-yard field goal off the left upright and through the goal posts as time expired for a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chargers-chiefs-score-329fa4446f99a14bba8c5b4bbdd4e3fd">19-17 win</a>&nbsp;over the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday night.

Patrick Mahomes again made all the big plays when the Chiefs needed them most and they rallied for their 15th straight one-score victory.

Kansas City has a two-game lead over the Bills (10-3) and Pittsburgh Steelers (10-3). Buffalo holds the tiebreaker over the Chiefs after handing Kansas City its only loss in Week 11. The Chiefs and Steelers face off in Pittsburgh on Christmas.

Russell Wilson improved to 6-1 this season, tossing two touchdown passes to help the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/browns-steelers-score-b15503c16fa74ded1a7ac39898690d20">Steelers beat the Cleveland Browns 27-14</a>.

Allen became the second player in NFL history to throw three touchdown passes and run for three scores in the same game — Otto Graham did it for the Cleveland Browns in the 1954 NFL championship game — but Buffalo’s defense couldn’t stop Matthew Stafford, Puka Nacua and the Los Angeles Rams in a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/rams-bills-score-allen-stafford-b71d13e2b51e270ee210a72abcbc06ef">44-42 loss</a>&nbsp;on Sunday.

The Bills had won seven in a row. They visit the Lions next week while the Steelers go to Philadelphia.

The Eagles barely held on for a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/panthers-eagles-score-9cbb439c6e2901a4a43867e9af005f91">22-16 victory</a>&nbsp;over the feisty Carolina Panthers. The ugly win left some of Philadelphia’s players in a sour mood.

Wide receivers A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith weren’t thrilled with the offense’s performance. The Eagles (11-2) again relied on Saquon Barkley, who had 124 yards rushing on 20 carries.

That meant Jalen Hurts didn’t have to do much. He threw for just 108 yards with two TDs passing and one more rushing.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/philadelphia-eagles-saquon-barkley-c63476fcea2b94c91157dea42a9e9704">Barkley broke LeSean McCoy’s single-season franchise record</a>&nbsp;for yards rushing. He’s up to 1,623 yards, moving closer to Eric Dickerson’s NFL record of 2,105 set in 1984.

Brown, who slammed his helmet out of frustration on the sideline after a three-and-out in the third quarter, responded bluntly when asked where the offense needs improvement.

“Passing,” Brown said, without elaborating.

Brown was targeted just four times, catching all four passes for 43 yards. Hurts didn’t throw him the ball a couple of times when he was open, including on a TD pass to Smith.

Brown said it’s “incredibly tough” for receivers to get into a rhythm because the offense is so run-heavy.

The Eagles have won nine straight games and trail the Lions (12-1) by one game for the No. 1 seed in the NFC. Detroit currently has the tiebreaker edge.

The Vikings stayed hot on the Lions’ heels thanks to a career day from Sam Darnold in a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/falcons-vikings-score-cousins-155dde9358e9c5c35e41f1363cd07cfb">42-21 rout</a>&nbsp;over&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/falcons-vikings-kirk-cousins-88c638742f1955ee155d15b747cb9c1e">Kirk Cousins</a>&nbsp;and the Atlanta Falcons.

Darnold had a career-best 347 yards passing and five touchdowns, leading Minnesota (11-2) to its sixth straight win. The Vikings finish the season in Detroit in a matchup that could determine the NFC North and the No. 1 seed in the NFC.

But there’s a long way to go until Jan. 5.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers moved into sole possession of first place in the NFC South with a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/raiders-buccaneers-score-7ad7ac0a9778a4e117c1311b91fdb45e">28-13 win</a>&nbsp;over Las Vegas coupled with Atlanta’s fourth straight loss. The Buccaneers are 7-6 following their third straight win over a last-place team. The Falcons (6-7) swept the Buccaneers, so they own the tiebreaker.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/seahawks-cardinals-score-f90237a04dcf0d9ae7f7352b9a8dfe12">Seattle Seahawks beat the Arizona Cardinals 30-18</a>&nbsp;on the road to maintain their hold on first place in the NFC West. It’s a tight race involving the Seahawks (8-5), Rams (7-6), Cardinals (6-7) and San Francisco 49ers (6-7). The division could come down to the Seahawks-Rams game in Los Angeles in Week 18.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Andy Reid doesn't need to schedule a stress test anytime soon. He seems to get one every week.

The Kansas City Chiefs coach saw his third-string kicker doink a 31-yard field goal off the left upright and through for a victory that secured the Chiefs' ninth straight AFC West title.

It was the Chiefs' 15th straight win in a one-score game over the last two seasons.

Patrick Mahomes led the two-time defending Super Bowl champions (12-1) on a clock-killing 4 1/2-minute drive to set up Matthew Wright’s fourth field goal. The ball clanged off the upright in the latest narrow escape for Kansas City, which is 10-0 this season in one-score games.

The Chiefs have now had&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/OptaSTATS/status/1865987660210405643">three different kickers make a game-winning field goal</a>&nbsp;as time expired this season. No other team in NFL history has had more than one kicker do so in a single season.

After securing a first down inside of the 2-minute warning, both Mahomes and Reid were content with running out the clock for the potential game winner, rather than trying to score a touchdown and leave time on the clock for Justin Herbert and the Chargers.

“I trusted Matthew, so I was good with where we were,” Reid said. “Percentages are pretty high. I know we won a game in that same situation on the opposite end, so I get it, but he’s a solid gamer, so I wasn’t too worried about it.”

Wright said he wasn't thinking about the game situation, instead focusing on what he had to do if it came down to his right leg. As the ball headed toward the upright and started drifting left, Wright said his thought wasn't good.

“It’s not a good one,” he said. “I want it to just go right down the middle, obviously.”

Kansas City's nine straight division titles are two short of the New England Patriots' NFL record of 11.

The Chiefs led 13-0 at halftime after the Chargers (8-5) punted on their first five possessions, but LA woke up in the second half, scoring on each of its three drives. Cameron Dicker's 37-yard field goal put the Chargers ahead 17-16 with 4:35 left.

“We just had to settle in," said Herbert, who was 21 of 30 for 213 yards and a TD. “We didn’t make enough plays in the first half and we didn’t execute the way we wanted to. Pass game, run game, we weren’t moving the ball well. That’s on us and I praise the guys for staying in there, staying patient and making plays in the second half.”

Mahomes then went to work, hitting Xavier Worthy for 14 yards on third-and-10 and scrambling for another first down. After the two-minute warning, Mahomes scrambled, dodged a would-be tackle and&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/NFL/status/1865974106522611871">lobbed a throw to a kneeling Travis Kelce</a>&nbsp;that allowed the Chiefs to run the clock down to zero.

“I went through my reads,” Mahomes said. “As I was ready to run, I just saw 87 just sitting right there in the middle of the field, open. So I fired it to him.”

Mahomes says he's not surprised that Kelce stepped up in the clutch.

“He means the world to me,” he said. “Without getting like emotional, he’s a guy that has really kind of made me who I am in my career. (He's a) true leader on the football field. He's someone that I can just go to at any moment, and he’s going to make a big play happen, and as he’s done throughout his career.”

Mahomes was sacked three times and has taken 13 sacks over the past three games, the most of any three-game stretch in his career.

The Chargers opened the second half with a 13-play, 79-yard drive that concluded with Gus Edwards' 3-yard touchdown run. Following a Chiefs punt, the Chargers then went 74 yards on four plays, aided by 39-yard pass interference penalty on Justin Reid, to take a 14-13 lead. Herbert found Quentin Johnson for a 4-yard touchdown, the Chargers' first TD pass in 13 quarters.

The Chiefs responded with Wright’s third field goal, this one from 50 yards after an unsportsmanlike-conduct penalty against Trey Smith pushed Kansas City back.

The Chiefs settled for Wright's 47-yard field goal on their opening drive, during which Mahomes passed Dan Marino for the most passing yards in the first eight years of a career.

Late in the second quarter,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chargers-herbert-3717688e0ee935d8dd58030b9ca654c1">Herbert was hit by Kansas City linebacker Nick Bolton</a>, forcing him to miss a play and leading to the Chargers' fifth punt. The Chiefs responded with a 9-play, 77-yard drive that ended with DeAndre Hopkins' TD catch.

Kansas City's halftime lead was its largest of the season and it shut out an opponent in the first half for the first time.

Kelce finished with 45 yards receiving and has 12,010 in his career, trailing only Tony Gonzalez and Jason Witten among tight ends. He is the fastest to reach 12,000 yards among tight ends.

Herbert missed only one play after the hit by Bolton after trainers looked at his left leg. Taylor Heinicke replaced him. ... TE Will Dissly left the game with a right shoulder injury in the third quarter. ... WR Jalen Reagor was hurt in the third quarter.

Chiefs T DJ Humphries left in the fourth quarter with a hamstring injury.

HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State men's wrestling team hosted nearly 300 student-athletes from 23 different schools at the 2024 FHSU Bob Smith Open on Sunday (Dec. 8). The Tigers sent 23 wrestlers to the mat, with those competitors racking up a total of 34 victories on the day.

In all, 18 different Tigers picked up at least one win, including 12 that came out on top multiple times.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/wrestling/roster/camden-padgett/8303">Camden Padgett</a>&nbsp;notched a team-high four wins in the 149-pound bracket, finishing the day with a 4-2 record. The redshirt-freshman rattled off four-consecutive victories in the consolation bracket, including one pin, one technical fall and two decisions.

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– K-State Nation is heading back to the Valley of the Sun, as Kansas State officials announced Sunday afternoon that the Wildcats have accepted an invitation to play Rutgers in the Rate Bowl inside Chase Field – home of MLB's Arizona Diamondbacks – in Phoenix, Arizona.

The game, which is the only bowl matchup between members of the Big 12 and Big Ten Conferences, will take place on Thursday, December 26 at 4:30 p.m. (CT) and air on ESPN.This is the 19th&nbsp;time overall and the eighth time for a bowl game that the Wildcats will play in the state of Arizona. 

It is the fifth time K-State will play in what is now known as the Rate Bowl as it also played in the game in 1993 (known as Copper Bowl and played in Tucson, Arizona), 2001 (Insight.com Bowl), 2013 (Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl) and 2017 (Cactus Bowl).

"We are excited to spend the holidays in Arizona and represent the Big 12 and our University in the Rate Bowl," said K-State head coach&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/chris-klieman/2502">Chris Klieman</a>, the first head coach in school history to lead his team to five bowl games in his first six seasons. Kansas State also retained the Governor's Cup with its 16th-straight win over Kansas, tied for the longest active uninterrupted winning streak in the nation. COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Tamar Bates had 29 points and five steals to help Missouri beat Hunter Dickinson and No. 1 Kansas 76-67 on Sunday.

Mark Mitchell scored 17 points in Missouri’s first win over Kansas since a 74-71 victory on Feb. 4, 2012. Anthony Robinson II had 11 points and five steals for the Tigers (8-1), and Josh Gray grabbed a team-leading 10 rebounds.

Dickinson had 19 points and 14 rebounds, but he also committed seven turnovers. The Jayhawks (7-2) have lost two straight on the road after falling 76-63 against Creighton on Wednesday night.

Missouri opened a 57-33 lead with 14:15 remaining on a jump shot from Tony Perkins. But the Jayhawks outscored the Tigers 30-8 over the next 11:55.

Bates scored 18 to help Missouri to a 39-25 lead at the break. The Tigers then opened the second half with a 16-6 run.

Kansas: Missouri's size and defensive pressure were too much for the Jayhawks, who are 5-5 at Mizzou Arena since it opened in 2004.

LIBERTY, Mo. – Fort Hays State Women's Wrestling had a big showing at the Jewell Duals, hosted by William Jewell College on Saturday (Dec. 7). The Tigers knocked off a pair of NCAA nationally ranked teams and one NAIA nationally ranked team on their way to a 4-1 day, moving to 7-2 overall on the season. Their only blemish for the day was a loss to the No. 1 team in the country, the University of Iowa.

Fort Hays State 23, #7 Lindenwood 20The Tigers made a big splash early to announce their presence, picking up their first-ever win over a Top 10 nationally ranked team. After Lindenwood jumped out to a 10-0 lead through two matches, the Tigers started to fight their way back and ultimately got past the Lions in two of the last three matches.

The Cardinals built an 8-1 win with a decision at 110 and a fall at 117, but&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-wrestling/roster/lexie-lopez/8283">Lexie Lopez</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-wrestling/roster/jamie-laswell/8282">Jamie Laswell</a>, and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-wrestling/roster/nichole-moore/8375">Nichole Moore</a>&nbsp;brought the Tigers all the way back into the lead.

Missouri Baptist picked up its only team points in the 103 match with the Tigers being open. After that, FHSU reeled off nine-straight wins to put an exclamation point on their big day in Liberty.

🏀 Hays City Shootout final day results

HAYS - The Hays High girls and boys programs were both in the finals of the 42nd Annual Gerald Mitchell Hays City Shootout on Saturday. It was the first time since 2003 that both teams were the finals of their home tournament.

GIRLS:&nbsp;#9 Hays 63 , Life Prep 56 Hays never trailed in their championship game against Life Prep winning 63 to 56. The Indians never trailed in their three tournament games.

Hays jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the first five minutes of the game using a pair of 5-0 spurts wrapped around a three pointer from the Fire. Hays stretched their lead to seven twice before settling for a 16-10 lead at the end of one quarter.

Hays built on their lead in the second quarter until it reached 17 at halftime. The Indians used a 14-3 run midway through the quarter to take their first double digit lead.

Hays led by 17 once again at 38-21 with just over four minutes left in the third quarter when Life Prep made it a game again. The Fire rattled off 14 straight points closing the score down to 38-21. A 7-2 run to end the quarter pushed the lead back to eight at 45-37.

Hays never could completely pull away from Life Prep. The Fire had the ball down three twice in the fourth but could not get any closer.

Hays made each of their last six free throws in the final two minutes to win 63-56.

Jenna Schmeidler led the Indians with a game and career high 25. Katie Linenberger added 12 and Molly Martin 10. The Indians made 28 of 34 free throws.

BOYS: Blue&nbsp; Valley Northwest 62, Hays 42 Blue Valley Northwest used a 20-2 second quarter run on their way to a 62-42 victory over the Hays High Indians to claim the championship of the Hays City Shootout.

The two teams traded blows for the first quarter. The game was tied four times over the first six minutes. Hays took their final lead at 12-11 with 1:35 left in the quarter. The Huskies outscored Hays 6-1 over the remainder of that time though and led 17-13 going to the second quarter.

Hays trailed by five at 23-18 when Northwest went on their 20-2 run. The blitz covered 3:50. A Carter Lang half court three beat the buzzer to make the score 43-23 at the break.

Hays scored the first four points of the fourth quarter but never got closer than the 16 point difference of 43-27.

Hays never threatened rest of the way in a 62-42 loss.

Dawson Ruder scored 12 points and Carter Lang added a career high 11.

🏀 Hays High girls claim Shootout title; boys runner-up

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State Men's Basketball took its first conference loss of the season on Saturday afternoon at Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Tigers fell to No. 3/4 ranked Washburn by a score of 71-57, moving to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in the MIAA. The Ichabods remained unbeaten on the season, now 9-0 overall and 2-0 in the MIAA.

Fort Hays State led a few times in the early going, but Washburn used a 14-2 run to go up 10 and never gave the lead back from the 11:46 mark of the first half to the end of the game. The Ichabods shot 56 percent from the field in the first half and led by eight at halftime, 37-29. Brayden Shorter had the hot hand early for the Ichabods, scoring 16 of his game-high 26 in the opening half.

A Kaleb Hammeke 3-point field goal to open the second half got the margin down to five, but Washburn countered with a pair of baskets to get the lead back to nine. The closest the Tigers got the rest of the way was eight points two more times. The Tigers kept the Ichabods within a reachable margin all day, never allowing the lead to get bigger than 15, but just never found a run to make the Ichabods sweat down the stretch.

Kyle Grill&nbsp;led the Tigers in scoring with 16 points, followed by Hammeke with 12. They were the only Tigers to reach double figures in scoring. Dan Makuna&nbsp;pulled down a team-high seven rebounds and Hammeke led in assists with four.

Joining Shorter in double figures for the Ichabods was Michael Keagan (11), Jack Bachelor (11), and Andrew Orr (10). Shorter added a team-high seven rebounds to his 26 points and Bachelor led the Ichabods in assists with six.The Tigers turned the ball over a season-high 19 times, six more than their previous high. The Ichabods generated 12 steals in the game and outscored the Tigers 18-11 in points off turnovers. The Ichabods snapped FHSU's two-game run of defeating NABC Top 25 ranked opponents at Gross Memorial Coliseum. The No. 3 ranking matched the highest the Ichabods have ever held while facing the Tigers in the program's NCAA Division II era.

The Tigers go back into non-conference play for the next four games this month. They travel to William Jewell on Saturday (Dec. 14) before returning home for their final three contests of December.&nbsp;&nbsp;

🏀 Tigers fall at home to No. 3 Ichabods

HAYS – The TMP-Marian Lady Monarchs closed out the 2024 Hays
City Shootout with a 52-43 win over Newton, while the TMP boys fell to
Manhattan in the seventh-place game 64-40 on the final day of the Hays City
Shootout Saturday at Hays Middle School.

GIRLS: TMP 52, Newton 43 The Monarchs (1-2) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead thanks to an
offensive rebound by Gracyn Schippers and a jumper by Shaylee Gottschalk.

Despite the early TMP lead, both teams started the game cold
offensively. TMP was just 1-for-8 to open the first quarter, and Newton (0-3)&nbsp; was 2
two-for-7

Newton built a 5-2 lead with just under two and a half
minutes to play in the first quarter.

Down three, TMP’s Brooke Koenigsman went to work, scoring
six straight points over the final minute of the first quarter, helping TMP
take an 8-5 lead into the second quarter.

TMP’s Teagan Gottschalk extended the Monarch's run to 8-0
with a steal on the first possession of the second quarter, putting TMP up
10-5.

The two teams traded field goals for much of the second
quarter, with the Monarchs leading 16-12 with just over two and a half minutes
left in the second quarter. Claire Schippers connected on a free throw,
sparking a 10-2 run that put TMP up 26-14 at the end of the first half.

The Monarchs extended their lead to as much as 15 in the
third quarter and led 40-28 through three quarters.

Newton closed within three points in the final frame at
45-42 thanks to an 11-0 run.

Koenigsman's three-pointer quieted the run and helped the
Monarchs close the game on a 7-1 run to secure a 52-43 victory.

It was John Linn's first win as head coach of the Monarchs.
