Hays High swept their way to the championship games of both the girls' and boys' tournament with a pair of electric victories.

Hays High used a 17-0 first half run to take a lead they would never relinquish in a 59-46 victory over Hugoton.

Hays High scored the first four points of the game before Hugoton grabbed control with a 9-0 burst. The Indians were on a nearly four minute scoring drought when Ramiyah Turner put the ball through the hoop. Haley LaBarge followed with four straight points that gave the Indians a 10-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Jenna Schmeidler hit three of her career high 26 points to open the second quarter and continue the 17-0 run. It took Hugoton nearly seven minutes to score and by the time they did, their three pointer made it a 21-12 score with 3:58 left before halftime.

The Eagles did pull back within six at 24-18 with two minutes to go in the second quarter. Hays though finished the half strong with a three pointer from Turner and a basket from Zoe Winter for a 29-18 halftime lead.

The Indians never led by less than nine points in the second half. Hays pushed their advantage to 38-23 with a 9-5 run to start the third quarter. Hugoton though refused to go away. The Eagles refused to go away and trimmed a 17 point lead down to 13 by then end of the third quarter at 40-27.

Schmeidler matched the 13 points she had through the first three quarter with 13 more in the fourth. She hit the first two baskets for the Indians in the fourth quarter followed by Annie Humphrey's pull up jumper to put&nbsp; Hays up 47-30.

Hays led by as many as 19 in the fourth quarter before settling for the 59-46 victory.

Molly Buckles was a rebound shy of her first career double-double, finishing the game with 10 points and 9 rebounds. The Indians outrebounded 33-22.

Hays High will take on Manhattan in the tournament finals at 5:00 on Saturday.

Boys Hays 55 - Salina Central 46

Hays High overcame a rough start in a 55-46 victory over Salina Central.

It took five minutes for Hays to score their first field goal of the game. Alex Loving finally broke the seal with a basket at the 2:55 mark. Salina Central though could only put a six point game on Hays during that stretch at 7-1.

The Indians first basket ignited a 10-0 run that resulted in their first lead of the night at 11-7 after Dawson Ruder and Izaac Fox three point plays. Hays entered the second quarter with an 11-9 lead. The score was tied five times through the second quarter. A Brody Harmoney three pointer in the final minute of the half put the Indians ahead 25-22 at halftime.

Hays would never trail again. The Indians scored on their first three possessions of the second half. A 13-6 start to the third quarter for Hays gave them their first double digit lead at 38-28 at the midway point.

Ruder scored 13 of his game and season high 24 in the third quarter and Hays entered the fourth quarter up 42-32.

Andre Pfeifer scored on a layup to open the fourth quarter which gave the Indians the first of two, twelve point leads in the fourth quarter. Leading 52-40 with less than three minutes to go the Indians wouldn't score another field goal. The Mustangs scored off of back-to-back turnovers to cut the gap down to eight.

Hays missed a pair of free throws with 30 seconds remaining and Salina Central scored with :19.3 on the clock for a 52-46 game. Ruder made three of four free throws in the final seconds of the game for the 55-46 victory.

Fox joined Ruder in double figures at 16 points. The two have combined for 79 points over the first two games.

Hays will take on Life Prep in the championship tomorrow at 7:00.

TMP girls and boys both fell in the second round of the consolation bracket Friday night at Hays Middle School

Girls: Salina Central 59, TMP-Marian 52 TMP was leading for over 3 quarters vs Salina Central, but a big 4th quarter from the Mustangs helped them move on to the 5th place game tomorrow afternoon.&nbsp;

The Monarchs started the game with four three-pointers in the 1st quarter: 2 from Hannah Rose, 1 from Brynn Rebel and Claire Schippers. TMP led after 1 16-11.

A Mustang run early in the second gave Salina Central its first lead in the second quarter at 18-17. The Monarchs quickly took the lead back, finishing out the half on a 14-6 run, leading 31-24 at the half.

TMP came out of the half and Hannah Rose hit 2 more threes to up the lead to as many as 12. After 3 quarters, it was TMP leading 49-41, ending on a 6-0 run.&nbsp;

However, the Monarchs struggled in the 4th quarter, shooting only 1-13. Salina Central took advantage of it and outscored the Monarchs 18-3 in the 4th quarter. Despite the strong 3 quarters, it was not enough and TMP fell by 7 to move to 0-2.&nbsp;

Hannah Rose led all scorers with 18 points and 5 3-pointers.

The Lady Monarchs will play in the 7th-place game tomorrow at 10 a.m. vs. Olathe East.

Boys: Hugoton 62, TMP-Marian 50 Hugoton got off to an early start against TMP and never looked back. TMP's late push at the end was not enough to pull out the victory.

TMP led at 5-2 and that was the only time they led in Friday night's finale at Hays Middle School.&nbsp;

Hugoton outscored the Monarchs in the 2nd quarter 21-6 to go up 37-16 at halftime.

The Monarchs came out of the locker rooms with better energy and responded in the 2nd half, outscoring Hugoton 34-25. Ty Schmeidler hit 3 3's in the 3rd and led the Monarchs with 15 points

Jacob Seib added 13 and William Eck scored 10 with 8 points in the 4th quarter.

TMP will play in the 7th-place game tomorrow at 11:45 AM vs Newton.

🏀 TMP swept on day 2 of Hays City Shootout

Collin Klein called it a "Dream Come True" as he was introduced to a cheering crowd as the new head football coach at Kansas State University on Friday.

Klein spoke in front of an audience at the Morgan Family Arena on the K-State campus. He praised the Kansas State football competitive spirit, touched on the physicality of the game., the need for resilience to adversity and steps necessary to excel. He was presented with a&nbsp; jersey bearing the number 7.

Klein pledged that K-State will be aggressive in moving the program forward, will play hard and with a schematic advantage.&nbsp; "I love challenges" and noted that&nbsp; he wants to take the program where it hasn't been before."

Collin Klein recruited many of the Wildcat players during an earlier stint as the offensive coordinator at Kansas State. He succeeds Chris Kleiman, who is retiring after seven years as the head coach.&nbsp;

Klein is the 36th head football coach in KSU history. He returns to Kansas State after two years as the offensive coordinator for Texas A&amp;M, and will continue to also serve in that capacity for the Aggies during the upcoming college football playoffs.

🏈 Collin Klein introduced as the new K-State head football coach

HAYS, Kan. - The No. 10 ranked Fort Hays State women's wrestling team delivered another dominating performance Friday evening, defeating Minot State by a score of 37-9 in dual action. FHSU moved to 4-0 in dual competition for the season.

The Tigers opened strong and never looked back, securing four wins by fall and three technical falls to overwhelm the Beavers. Jaidyn Alvarado set the tone at 103 pounds with a pin in 1:09, while Isabella Cross followed with a 10-0 technical fall at 110. Maddy Blow picked up a forfeit at 117 to push the Tiger lead to 14-0.

Minot State earned its first points at 124 pounds when Alyssa Jones pinned Jazmin Roschmann, but Fort Hays State quickly regained momentum. Addison Broxterman answered with a lightning-fast pin in 22 seconds at 131, and Ashlynn Goodwin dominated at 138 with an 11-0 tech fall. Amanda Jaeger added another fall in just 27 seconds at 145. FHSU was in full control at 28-5 in team score.

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– One of the greatest players in school history will return to lead the Wildcats on the sidelines, as Collin Klein has been named the next head football coach at Kansas State, athletics director&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/staff-directory/gene-taylor/1">Gene Taylor</a>&nbsp;announced Thursday.

A 2012 Heisman Trophy finalist and member of K-State Football's Ring of Honor, Klein is now in his 12th year in coaching, nine of which have come at K-State.

Klein will be introduced to the public Friday in a welcome event at Morgan Family Arena. Doors open at 3 p.m., with the ceremony beginning at 4 p.m. It will also be streamed live on ESPN+."We are excited to welcome one of our all-time greats back home to Manhattan," Taylor said.

"Collin is a tremendous leader who cares deeply about his players. The grit, toughness and aggression he displayed as a player still fuels him today as a coach, and he is determined to carry on the tremendous success this program has achieved.

As we know, college football has changed, and I am confident that Collin is ready to embrace this new model while maintaining the culture that we know as K-State Football.

Klein, the 36th head football coach in school history, has agreed to a five-year contract with an average base salary of $4.3 million to lead his alma mater.

He served as K-State's offensive coordinator in 2022 and 2023 and currently serves as the offensive coordinator at Texas A&amp;M, a role that he will continue in during the Aggies' postseason run."My family and I could not be more grateful for the opportunity to come home," Klein said.

He helped guide Kansas State to a 19-8 mark and a Big 12 Championship during his two-year run as offensive coordinator.His first full season as K-State offensive coordinator in 2022 was a success as he led an offense that ranked in the top 10 in school history in 11 categories, including ranking second in offensive yards (5,863) and plays (958), fourth in rushing yards (2,916) and fifth in yards per game (418.8).

The Wildcats finished the 2022 season with 421.6 total yards per game – their most since 2014 – while their 32.3 points per game were the most by the squad since 2017. K-State improved its production in Klein's second season at the offensive controls, as its 37.1 points per game ranked 10th nationally and sixth in school history, while it was the highest average by a K-State team since Klein's senior season of 2012 (38.9 points per game).

Kansas State produced 445.2 total yards per game in 2023 to rank second in school history.In Klein's offense, running back Deuce Vaughn became the second player in school history to twice earn Consensus All-America honors, while Cooper Beebe became the first offensive lineman in school history to earn Consensus All-America honors.

Prior to serving as K-State's offensive coordinator, Klein was the Wildcats' quarterbacks coach in 2017, 2019 and 2021, while he was a co-offensive coordinator in 2018.

He earned his first full-time coaching position tutoring the quarterbacks at Northern Iowa in 2016, which was just a year hiatus from Manhattan as he worked as an assistant director of recruiting and defensive quality control coach for the Wildcats in 2014 and an offensive graduate assistant in 2015.

The 2012 Johnny Unitas Award winner, Klein finished his K-State career ranking in the school's top 10 in 34 different game, season and career record categories. He was the first quarterback from a Power 5 school since 1998 to rush for at least 20 touchdowns and pass for 10 scores in consecutive seasons by doing so in 2011 and 2012.

Klein led the Wildcats to a combined 21-5 record as the starting quarterback in 2011 and 2012, which culminated with a No. 1 national ranking, Big 12 Championship and Fiesta Bowl berth in 2012.

Serving as the offensive coordinator at Texas A&amp;M the last two seasons, Klein has helped the Aggies to an 11-1 record this season and a possible berth into the College Football Playoff, which will be announced on Sunday.

In a world where the hustle and bustle often overshadow gentle acts of kindness, Isaiah Kevin Maxi stood out. Born on August 16, 1994, in Kansas City, Missouri, Isaiah’s earthly journey ended at the age of 30 on July 10, 2025, but his legacy continues to resonate in the hearts of those who knew him.

During the holiday season, when families gather around the warmth of love and laughter, we reflect on the indelible mark Isaiah left on his loved ones and his community. From a young age, Isaiah faced challenges, particularly with the loss of his mother, Kim Alexander-Maxi, when he was just six years old. Yet, amidst personal tragedy, he transformed his grief into a powerful drive for service and leadership, becoming a beacon of hope and positivity for others.

A proud graduate of Fort Hays State University (FHSU) in 2017, Isaiah earned degrees in Sociology and Organizational Leadership while actively participating in student activities, athletics, and working at the Tiger Tots Preschool Center, where he was affectionately known as “Mr. Maxi.” His infectious energy lit up the room, encouraging children to embrace learning and teamwork.

Friends and family describe Isaiah as warm-hearted and approachable, someone who made everyone feel valued. He was not just a talented athlete on the football field, earning accolades as a leader of the Fort Hays State Tigers, but also a compassionate volunteer dedicated to uplifting others. Seth Kastle, professor of leadership, once said, “He was the epitome of what we educate our students to be – dedicated to serving others and helping those in need.”

After graduation, Isaiah continued his mission of service through AmeriCorps, striving to create positive change in the lives of those around him. He embraced every challenge as an opportunity, believing that “everything happens for a reason,” and ensuring his legacy was one of compassion, leadership, and community building.

His sudden passing left a profound void in the hearts of those who loved him. To honor his memory and the values he embodied, the FHSU Leadership Program has renamed its student service award to the “Isaiah Maxi Outstanding Leadership and Service Award.” This accolade will celebrate and recognize students who exemplify the same spirit of dedication and service that Isaiah so passionately embraced.

Born on August 16, 1994, in Kansas City, Missouri, Isaiah’s earthly journey ended at the age of 30 on July 10, 2025, but his legacy continues to resonate in the hearts of those who knew him.During the holiday season, when families gather around the warmth of love and laughter, we reflect on the indelible mark Isaiah left on his loved ones and his community. From a young age, Isaiah faced challenges, particularly with the loss of his mother, Kim Alexander-Maxi, when he was just six years old. Yet, amidst personal tragedy, he transformed his grief into a powerful drive for service and leadership, becoming a beacon of hope and positivity for others.A proud graduate of Fort Hays State University (FHSU) in 2017, Isaiah earned degrees in Sociology and Organizational Leadership while actively participating in student activities, athletics, and working at the Tiger Tots Preschool Center, where he was affectionately known as “Mr. Maxi.” His infectious energy lit up the room, encouraging children to embrace learning and teamwork.Friends and family describe Isaiah as warm-hearted and approachable, someone who made everyone feel valued. 🏀 Hays City Shootout Day 1 Results; Day 2 Schedule

WARRENSBURG, Mo. – Fort Hays State Men's Basketball fell in its conference opener on Thursday night&nbsp; at Central Missouri. Both teams entered the game receiving votes in the NABC Top 25 Poll and the Mules emerged victorious 64-50 with a hot stretch in the second half where they created separation. UCM is now 8-2 overall and 1-0 in the MIAA, while FHSU went to 5-2 overall and 0-1 in the MIAA.

The teams played to a 14-14 tie by the second media break of the first half. Fort Hays State used an 8-0 run to go up eight (22-14) out of the break, their largest lead of the game, however the Mules chipped away and the Tigers wound up leading by just two at halftime, 29-27.

A big burst by the Mules out of the second media break of the second half turned out to be the key stretch of the game. The teams were tied at the second media break again, just like the first half, but the Mules went on a 14-0 run out of the break to get away from the Tigers. The FHSU offense went into a dry spell for about a five-minute stretch before a Dan Mukuna bucket stopped the big run by the Mules. However, the damage was too much as FHSU scored just seven points inside the final 10 minutes of the game.

Mukuna led the Tigers with 20 points and nine rebounds. Jahvari Martino was the only other Tiger in double figures scoring with 10 points.

Jevon Hill led UCM with 16 points, while Kyran Tilley added 13. Tilley was a big factor in the 14-point run by UCM with seven points in that stretch. Carter Kaifes hit two 3-point field goals in that stretch and finished with 11 points.

After shooting just 33.3 percent from the field in the first half, UCM warmed to 51.9 percent in the second half. The Mules hit 10 3-point field goals and 10 free throws, compared to just three 3-pointers and five free throws made by the Tigers, which pretty much provided the difference in the game as UCM finished with 22 field goals and FHSU finished with 21.

Fort Hays State has another strong challenge ahead when it faces No. 2 nationally ranked Washburn on Saturday in Topeka. The Ichabods are off to a 9-0 start to the year and 1-0 start in MIAA play with a win over Nebraska-Kearney on Thursday night. Washburn was a national semifinalist last year.

🏀 Tigers fall to Mules in MIAA opener

WARRENSBURG, Mo. - The third-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team edged Central Missouri in a tense overtime matchup Thursday (Dec. 4), winning 65-60. The victory was secured through a strong defensive performance that included 15 steals and six blocks while creating 26 Jennie turnovers.

The Tigers move to 7-0 overall and 1-0 in MIAA play with the win, tied for the fifth-best start to a season in program history. FHSU has now won five in a row against the Jennies (4-3, 0-1 MIAA), tied for its longest winning streak in series history.

Fort Hays State scored first on a jumper from Olivia Mortensen, but UCM scored the next nine points to take a comfortable lead. The Jennies led by as many as nine five minutes into the game, but an Ellie Stearns 3-pointer late in the quarter narrowed the deficit to 14-12.

The visitors twice rallied to tie the score early in the second quarter, but the Jennies had an answer each time. The Tigers finally regained the lead with three minutes to go in the half on back-to-back Talexa Weeter baskets. The lead changed hands five times down the stretch, with FHSU going into the locker room up 27-26 after a late layup from Mikayla Pilley.

UCM scored the first six points of the second half to go back on top by five. The Tigers tied the score twice before UCM built a seven-point lead late in the frame. Ellie Stearns finished the scoring with a pair of free throws, putting FHSU within 46-41 entering the final stanza.

The Tigers battled back to start the fourth quarter, hitting four of their first five shots to take the lead on Stearns' fourth 3-pointer of the game. Weeter later hit a 3-pointer in transition at the 4:51 mark to put the Tigers up 54-49. The FHSU defense helped the Tigers claw back, holding UCM to just 1-of-10 shooting and creating eight turnovers over the first 9:35.

The Jennies made one final push, however, hitting all three of their shots in the final 25 seconds, including a 3-pointer at the buzzer from Makenzie Farmer to tie the score at 57 and send the game into overtime.

After limiting UCM to just three points in nine-plus minutes in the fourth quarter, the Tigers duplicated that effort in the overtime period, holding the Jennies to 1-of-9 shooting and creating two turnovers while allowing only three points. Weeter scored the first four points of the overtime period before Avery Lowe put the Tigers up five with a layup at the 1:59 mark. Loewe pushed the lead back to five with a pair of free throws in the final minute before the defense sealed the deal, forcing three missed shots including Lowe's third block of the game.

Weeter led all scorers with 23 points, while Loewe totaled 16 points, eight assists, seven rebounds, five steals and one block while playing in all 45 minutes of action. Stearns tallied 15 points and also racked up five steals while Lowe totaled a career-high nine steals and three blocks. The Tigers are now 4-0 in overtime under head coach Talia Kahrs.

UCM's 26 turnovers are the most by the Jennies in nearly six years (29 at UCO, 1/4/20), while their shooting percentage of 31.3 (20-of-64) is the team's lowest since March 2021.

The Tigers will wrap up the road trip on Saturday (Dec. 6, 1 p.m.) against Washburn in Topeka, Kan. before playing their first home game the following Saturday (Dec. 13, 2 p.m.) when they host No. 8 Pittsburg State in a non-conference battle.

🏀 No. 3 FHSU women hold off Jennies in overtime

A 2012 Heisman Trophy finalist and member of K-State Football's Ring of Honor, Klein is now in his 12th year in coaching, nine of which have come at K-State. 

Klein will be introduced to the public Friday in a welcome event at Morgan Family Arena. Doors open at 3 p.m., with the ceremony beginning at 4 p.m. It will also be streamed live on ESPN+."We are excited to welcome one of our all-time greats back home to Manhattan," Taylor said. 

"Collin is a tremendous leader who cares deeply about his players. The grit, toughness and aggression he displayed as a player still fuels him today as a coach, and he is determined to carry on the tremendous success this program has achieved. 

As we know, college football has changed, and I am confident that Collin is ready to embrace this new model while maintaining the culture that we know as K-State Football. 

Klein, the 36th head football coach in school history, has agreed to a five-year contract with an average base salary of $4.3 million to lead his alma mater. 

He served as K-State's offensive coordinator in 2022 and 2023 and currently serves as the offensive coordinator at Texas A&amp;M, a role that he will continue in during the Aggies' postseason run."My family and I could not be more grateful for the opportunity to come home," Klein said.

"The first K-State alum to serve as head football coach since Ellis Rainsberger from 1975-77,&nbsp; Klein helped the Wildcats to 51 wins and five bowl appearances during his tenure as a full-time assistant coach. 

The Wildcats finished the 2022 season with 421.6 total yards per game – their most since 2014 – while their 32.3 points per game were the most by the squad since 2017. K-State improved its production in Klein's second season at the offensive controls, as its 37.1 points per game ranked 10th nationally and sixth in school history, while it was the highest average by a K-State team since Klein's senior season of 2012 (38.9 points per game). 

Prior to serving as K-State's offensive coordinator, Klein was the Wildcats' quarterbacks coach in 2017, 2019 and 2021, while he was a co-offensive coordinator in 2018. 

Serving as the offensive coordinator at Texas A&amp;M the last two seasons, Klein has helped the Aggies to an 11-1 record this season and a possible berth into the College Football Playoff, which will be announced on Sunday. 

This season, Texas A&amp;M holds an 11-1 record as the Aggies rank in the top 30 nationally in scoring offense (16th; 36.3 points per game), total offense (20th; 454.4 yards per game), rushing offense (26th; 192.7 yards per game), passing offense (32nd; 261.8 yards per game), tackles for loss allowed (1st; 2.83 per game), fourth down percentage (2nd; 75.0%), sacks allowed (11th; 1.00 per game), passing yards per completion (11th; 14.09), time of possession (15th; 32:24) and first downs (29th; 272).

Most recently they defeated Manhattan Christian 92-44 in what was the Tigers most points in a game and their fewest allowed in a game this season. The Tigers have their scoring defense average down to 57.5, which now ranks third in NCAA Division II. The Tigers led NCAA Division II in that stat category the last two seasons.

Central Missouri enters Thursday on a five-game win streak. During Thanksgiving week, UCM notched wins over McKendree and Drury of the GLVC before their most recent win over Tabor (Kan.) College this past Sunday.

The third-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team opens conference play this weekend on the road beginning Thursday against Central Missouri. First tip against the Jennies is set for 5:30 p.m. in Warrensburg, Mo.

The Tigers enter the weekend 6-0 overall, tied for the 10th-best start in program history, while the Jennies are 4-2 overall. FHSU in true road games this year, while UCM is 1-1 at home.

FHSU has had one of the top offenses in the country so far this season, ranking first in Division II with 21.3 assists per game, third in field goal percentage (49.6 percent) and 10th in scoring (81.0 ppg).

Playing in her 100th career game Thursday, Brooke Loewe is 30 assists away from breaking the school's career assists record (478, Maisha Prewitt, 1997-01). The senior leads all NCAA Divisions with an average of 10.2 assists per game this season. The top DI average is 8.9, while the next-best average in DII is 8.0. Loewe's 14 assists in a game, a feat she accomplished twice in five days before Thanksgiving, are the most in a game by a DII athlete this season.

Talexa Weeter leads Division II and would also rank first in DI with an average of 29.0 points per game. Only Alexa Charles of DIII school Hunter with 33.3 points per game averages more points per game across all NCAA Divisions. She's scored 25 or more points in five of six games this season, including three with 30-plus.

Weeter (52.1 percent) and Olivia Mortensen (50.8 percent) rank 2-3 in the MIAA in field goal percentage, respectively, while Weeter's 8.8 rebounds per game are second-most in the conference. Mortensen also ranks fifth in the MIAA with 2.0 steals per contest, while Ellie Stearns is averaging 2.3 made 3-pointers per game, fifth-most in the MIAA.

suffering a first-round loss to Moundridge.They must replace their leading scorer and rebounder.
