The Division II Executive Board this week approved the expansion of the Division II Football Championship bracket from 28 to 32 teams, starting this year.&nbsp;

The board also authorized more than $2.5 million in budget requests for the 2025-26 fiscal year, including $545,000 to expand the bracket.&nbsp;

Other notable budget approvals, which were recommended by the Division II Strategic Planning and Finance Committee, included the following:&nbsp;

"These budget decisions reflect our continued investment in what matters most — the student-athlete experience," said Colleen Perry Keith, president at Goldey-Beacom and chair of the Division II Executive Board. "From expanded championship opportunities to improved support through per diem increases, we're committed to enhancing the Division II experience for all student-athletes."

The recommendation to expand the football bracket stemmed from two key actions at the 2025 NCAA Convention. First, the Division II Executive Board approved new exceptions to the triennial budget process that allow bracket changes when championship policies change. Second,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ncaa.org/news/2025/1/17/media-center-division-ii-approves-automatic-qualification-privileges-for-football.aspx#:~:text=Division%20II's%20football%2Dsponsoring%20delegates,the%20current%20earned%20access%20legislation.">Division II members voted to make football an automatic qualification sport</a>, replacing the earned-access model.&nbsp;

According to the Division II championship policy, bracket expansion must be considered when automatic qualifiers make up more than 50% of the field. With 16 conferences eligible for automatic qualification in 2025, 57% of the current 28-team bracket would be composed of automatic qualifiers. 🥎Indians come up short against Great Bend

PRATT – The TMP-Marian Monarchs softball team ran its win streak to
16 straight Tuesday night with a doubleheader sweep of Pratt Skyline
Thunderbirds.

Bria Windholz homered, doubled, and drove in three runs, and the Monarchs scored runs in the first inning, a 14-3 win in game one.

TMP got the offense going in the top of the first inning
when the first three hitters of the game reached base, and Brooke Koenigsman
walked with the bases loaded for a 1-0 TMP lead.

Windholz followed with a two-run single for a 3-0 TMP lead. 

Three batters later Teagan Gottschalk walked with the bases
loaded making it 4-0 TMP.

Brynn Rebel capped off the inning two-run single in a 6-0
TMP lead.

After giving up a pair of runs in the Skyline half of the
first, TMP got the two runs back in the top of the second, soring on Paige
Koenigsman single and an Addison Watson sacrifice fly.

TMP added three runs in each the third and fourth innings on
their way to the 14-3 victory.

In the third inning TMP scored on a passed ball, a Brynn
Schoepf RBI single and a solo homerun by Windholz.

Brooke Koenigsman added a run on s sacrifice fly in the
fourth and Watson singled home two runs to put TMP by 11.

Brynn Rebel earned the win in the circle for TMP. 

She allowed three runs, two earned, with four walks and four
strikeouts in five innings.

The Monarchs drove in three runs each in a 14-2 victory in
the second game of the doubleheader.

It took TMP’s offense a couple of innings to get going in
the second game, managing only a run on a sacrifice fly in the second inning.

Leading 1-0, the Monarch broke through with four runs in the
third inning. 

Molly Helget singled in a run and Brynn Rebel added a sacrifice
fly, putting TMP up 3-0.

Paige Koenigsman capped off the inning with a two-run single
for a 5-0 TMP lead.

With the bases loaded in the top of the fourth, TMP scored on a Brynn Rebel single, a Hannah Rose double, and a wild pitch for a 10-0 TMP lead. Addison Watson added an RBI double to put TMP up 11-0.

of the game, leading off the fifth, and then she scored on an error, putting TMP

Skyline got a run in the bottom of the fifth, but TMP went on

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Freddy Fermin hit a winning single in the 11th and the Kansas City Royals rebounded from a blown two-run, ninth-inning lead to beat Colorado 4-3 on Tuesday night and drop the Rockies to 4-18.

Daniel Lynch IV (3-0) pitched a hitless inning as part of a five-hitter, sending Colorado to its ninth loss in 10 games. The Rockies are 1-12 on the road.

Jacob Stallings put Colorado ahead 3-2 with three-run double after Carlos Estévez walked the bases loaded with two outs in the ninth.

Salvador Perez singled off Seth Halvorsen starting the bottom half, advanced on Maikel Garcia’s double and scored on Michael Massey’s sacrifice fly.

With automatic runner Mark Canha on second starting the 11th, Tyler Kinley (0-1) intentionally walked Bobby Witt Jr., who extended his hitting streak to 14 games with an eighth-inning single. Kinley threw a wild pitch and intentionally walked Vinnie Pasquantino, and Fermin lined a single to center.

HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs ran their win streak to 12
straight games as they completed a doubleheader sweep of the Plainville
Cardinals Tuesday in Hays.

In the two games, the Monarchs’ pitching combined to allow just
three hits and struck out 23.

GAME 1: TMP 10, Plainville 0 In the first game of the doubleheader, Adler Brown was two-for-three
with three RBIs and scored two runs, and Grant Nehls struck out six in three
shutout innings in the 10-0 TMP victory.

The Monarchs opened the scoring with four runs in the bottom
of the first inning, taking advantage of a passed ball, a wild pitch, two hit
by pitches, and a walk for a 4-0 lead.

After a scoreless second, TMP added two more runs in the
third inning, scoring runs on back-to-back RBI singles by Grant Nehls and Adler
Brown, putting TMP up 6-0.

In the bottom of the fifth, Brown drove in two more runs with
a single in the bottom of the fifth inning, making it 8-0 TMP.

TMP added another run on an error, making it 9-0.

The Monarchs' final run came on a wild pitch in the bottom

⚾Monarchs' pitching leads the way in sweep of Plainville

HAYS - Hays High (8-4, 7-1) completed their three game season series with Dodge City (6-7, 1-4) with a doubleheader at home on Tuesday at Leo-Harper Field. The Indians scored in double figures in both games, winning 12-3 and 11-6.

Game 1: Hays High 13, Dodge City 3 Hays High scored in five of six innings for a 13-3 win over Dodge City. The Indians gave up three runs in the top of the first and then answered with three of their own to tie the game.

Hays scored six more in the bottom of the second to grab firm control of the game at 9-3. A single tally in the third inning made the score 10-3. The Indians added on three more runs during the fifth and sixth innings for a 13-3 run-rule victory.

The Indians also worked themselves out of a some potential trouble with some defensive gems. Ian McGuire made a sliding catch to rob a hit and right fielder Landon Hardman threw out two would be singles at first base.

⚾ Hays sweeps Dodge City to keep WAC lead

HAYS, Kan. – For the first time since the 2010 season, the Fort Hays State Baseball team reached 30 wins in a season on Tuesday (Apr. 22) in a 12-4 win over Emporia State. The No. 21 ranked Tigers moved to 30-11 overall on the season and 24-6 in the MIAA with the win and swept the regular season series with the Hornets. Emporia State moved to 21-20 overall and 14-16 in the MIAA.

Cade Flaherty&nbsp;had a strong outing on the mound for FHSU, allowing just one run through seven innings of work. He escaped a bases-loaded jam in the second with just one run allowed and settled in from that point to hold the Hornets scoreless over the next five innings.

With Flaherty getting stronger on the hill, the Tiger offense came alive with two outs in the third inning when Isaiah Ural&nbsp;singled and Trey DeGarmo&nbsp;followed with an RBI triple to the right-center gap. The Tigers moved into the lead in the fourth inning with three more runs. A muffed throw by the Hornet first baseman on a sacrifice bunt by Cesar Saavedra&nbsp;set up the scoring opportunity as Cooper Howell&nbsp;drilled a 2-RBI triple to the left-center gap. Zane Knox&nbsp;followed with an RBI groundout. Ural extended the Tiger lead to four in the seventh with a solo home run to left-center field.

Flaherty finally ran out of gas in the eighth inning as the Hornets loaded the bases with one out. Brandon Chavez&nbsp;entered for a save opportunity and the Hornets pushed all three runs charged to Flaherty across the plate, but Chavez got a strikeout and a groundout to keep the Tigers in front 5-4.

After the tense moments in the top of the eighth, the Tiger offense erupted for seven runs in the bottom half of the inning to run away with the victory. Sebastian Burgos&nbsp;knocked in the first run with an RBI single and Ural had a sacrifice fly RBI to make it 7-4. The inning extended when the ESU center fielder dropped what would have been the third out, allowing two more runs to score. Elliott Herrmann&nbsp;followed with an RBI single and Saavedra had a 2-RBI double.

Chavez held the Hornets scoreless in the ninth for his ninth save of the season. Flaherty moved to 4-1 overall on the season with a 135-pitch effort on the mound. He scattered six hits and walked five, while striking out two. Emporia State used seven pitchers and the loss went to the first reliever of the game, Coby Rogers, who allowed four runs to the Tigers (three earned) in 1.1 innings of work.

With the win, Fort Hays State took&nbsp; a half-game lead over Central Missouri who plays their midweek Wednesday against Washburn. 

The Tigers will host Northwest Missouri State this weekend for the final home games of the regular season, set for Friday through Sunday. Pack the Park will be Friday night at 7 p.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The No. 21 ranking is their highest of the season so far in the ABCA Poll, while they have been ranked as high as No. 20 in the NCBWA Poll. The Tigers have been in the ABCA top 30 each of the last six weeks.

Fort Hays State is one of four teams from the MIAA currently ranked in the Top 30 of the ABCA Poll. Central Missouri is ranked No. 5 in the latest poll, while Pittsburg State is No. 25 and Central Oklahoma is No. 30.

At 29-11 overall, Fort Hays State is on the cusp of reaching the 30-win mark in a season for the first time since 2010, when it finished with a 31-22 record. The 30-win mark was a yearly standard FHSU hit for 15-straight years from 1993 to 2007, and then the 2009 and 2010 seasons to make a total of 17 times in 18 years. The Tigers produced at least 40 in a season six times in that 15-year span from 1993 to 2007.

HAYS, Kan. - Fort Hays State University Athletics will pay tribute to the 1974 Tiger Baseball team for its historic achievement prior to the 7 p.m. game against Northwest Missouri State University on April 25 at Larks Park. The recognition will be a part of the annual Pack the Park event. The team was the first at FHSU to play in a national baseball tournament, specifically the NAIA National Baseball Tournament, now known as the NAIA College World Series.

That season the Tigers won the NAIA District 10 Playoffs, defeating Bethany College, Emporia State, and Benedictine College to reach the NAIA Area 3 Playoffs in Oklahoma City. The Tigers then defeated Kearney State and Southeastern Oklahoma twice to reach the NAIA championship site in St. Joseph, Mo. They fell to Sam Houston State and Wisconsin-Oshkosh at the championship site, wrapping their season at 26-18 overall. The Tigers finished the year at No. 7 in the NAIA national rankings.

Guiding the Tigers to the national tournament was Earl Hobbs (1929-2013) who coached the Tigers from 1967-1976. Both of his assistant coaches, Rod Ruder (1951-2021) and Frank Leo, were graduates of FHSU and were eventually inducted into the Tiger Sports Hall of Fame. "We were truly fortunate to have had the opportunity to play for them," commented Brad Rumble. "What they did to help the team reach the national tournament and become part of FHSU baseball history is something we will never forget."

The NCAA passed rules Monday that would upend decades of precedent by allowing colleges to pay their athletes per terms of a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nil-ncaa-house-settlement-1dc0f36ee94134d6ace86fd0bd66f290">multibillion-dollar lawsuit settlement</a>&nbsp;expected to go into effect this summer.

The nine proposals passed by the NCAA board were largely expected but still mark a defining day in the history of college sports. An athlete’s ability to be&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-athletes-amateur-ncaa-79e481c957d73a545fee24cda06e4f87">paid directly by his or her university</a>&nbsp;is on track to be enshrined in a rulebook that has forbidden that kind of relationship for decades.

For the NCAA rules to officially go into effect, the changes prescribed by the House settlement still have to be granted final&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-lawsuit-settlement-roster-limits-2cdd17ee4b6081dd8892b3dc998d03e8">approval by a federal judge</a>, whose hearing earlier this month led to questions about potential tweaks before the new guidelines are supposed to go into play on July 1.

The changes will eliminate around 150 rules and alter many others in the NCAA’s sprawling rulebook. They essentially codify measures set up by the settlement, including:

—Modifying bylaws to allow schools to pay the athletes directly.

—Eliminating scholarship limits for teams, while also&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ncaa-lawsuit-settlement-nil-d162a40c71be28a380c75d6c8202807a">setting roster limits</a>&nbsp;that are designed to replace the scholarship caps. Some details of the roster limits, which were a key sticking point in the April 7 hearing, will be finalized later.

—Establishing annual reporting requirements for schools that pay athletes; a payment pool is set to be approximately $20.5 million for the biggest schools beginning next academic year.

—Setting up a clearinghouse for all name, image and likeness (NIL) deals that come from third parties and are worth $600 or more.

BOSTON (AP) — Sharon Lokedi broke the Boston Marathon course record, and fellow Kenyan John Korir joined his brother as a race champion on Monday as the city celebrated the 250th anniversary of the start of the Revolutionary War.

Lokedi, who ran for the University of Kansas from 2015-2019, outran two-time defending champion Hellen Obiri over the final mile a year after losing a sprint down Boylston Street to her in one of the closest finishes in race history. Lokedi finished in an unofficial 2 hours, 17 minutes, 22 seconds — 19 seconds ahead of Obiri and more than 2 1/2 minutes faster than the previous Boston best.

Six months after winning Chicago, Korir finished in 2:04:45 — the second-fastest winning time in race history as the runners took advantage of perfect marathon weather to conquer the 26.2 miles from Hopkinton to Boston’s Copley Square.

After crossing the line, Korir was greeted by his older brother, 2012 Boston winner Wesley Korir. Although the race has been won by a pair of unrelated John Kelleys and two different Robert Cheruiyots, the Korirs are the first brothers — or relatives of any kind — to win the world's oldest and most prestigious annual marathon.

Conner Mantz of Provo, Utah, finished fourth after losing a three-way sprint to the finish with Alphonce Felix Simbu of Tanzania and Cybrian Kotut of Kenya. Simbu was second and Kotut was third.

Korir ran without his bib showing, pulling it out of his running tights as he sprinted down Boylston Street.

Reenactors on horseback, accompanied by a fife and drum playing “Yankee Doodle,” helped start the festivities and add a bit of levity when Paul Revere’s horse was spooked by the finish line decal on the street and stopped. The actor portraying the colonial silversmith and patriot had to hop off and walk the last few steps himself as the small early crowd laughed and clapped.

After reading a proclamation, Revere gently tugged the horse the rest of the way before riding off to more ceremonies commemorating the midnight ride on April 19, 1775, that warned the colonists in Lexington and Concord that the British were on the march.

Marcel Hug of Switzerland had no such trouble completing the course, zooming into Copley Square in 1:21:34 for his eighth Boston wheelchair title. He beat two-time winner Daniel Romanchuk by more than four minutes in the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/boston-marathon-wheelchair-bob-hall-0426d27b488fbb668c04523a391d655d">50th anniversary of Bob Hall’s pioneering push</a>&nbsp;to add a wheelchair division to the race.

“It means a lot to win this year, 50 years of wheelchairs in Boston,” Hug said. “For me, it will take some time to realize what it means, eight times wins. It’s such an incredible number.”

Susannah Scaroni of the United States won the women’s wheelchair race for the second time, finishing in 1:35:20. The undefeated TMP-Marian Monarchs are ranked No. 1 in Class 2-1A in the latest rankings from the Kansas Association of Baseball Coaches.

DETROIT (AP) — Bobby Witt Jr. hit a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the 10th inning, and the Kansas City Royals beat the Detroit Tigers 4-3 Sunday to stop a six-game losing streak.

With the score 3-3, Jonathan India's groundout off Tyler Holton (1-2) advanced automatic runner Drew Waters to third, and Witt hit a 280-foot fly to left. Waters scored headfirst ahead of Riley Greene's throw.

Carlos Estévez (1-0) intentionally walked Greene to put runners on the corners with two outs in the bottom half, then retired Dillon Dingler on a popup.

Kansas City went 2-8 on its trip and is 9-14. Detroit had won three straight.

Detroit left fielder Kerry Carpenter left the game after the eighth inning because of right hamstring soreness.

Tigers ace Tarik Skubal allowed two runs and seven hits in five innings, while Royals starter Michael Wacha gave up two runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 inning

Hunter Pasquantino and Drew Waters built a 2-0 lead with RBI singles in the second, but consecutive, two-out run-scoring singles by Carpenter and Zach McKinstry tied the score inthe fifth.

McKinstry's RBI single in the seventh ended Daniel Lynch IV's scoreless streak at 31 innings.

Mark Canha tied the score in the eighth with an RBI single after Witt reached second on a throwing error by third baseman Javier Báez.

With the bases loaded in the seventh, Salvador Perez scooped Greene's grounded and start an inning-ending 3-2-3 double play.

Skubal is 11-1 with a 1.96 ERA in 18 starts at home since the start of the 2024 season.

Royals: LHP Kris Bubic (2-1, 1.88) starts Tuesday homestand opener against Rockies RHP Ryan Feltner (0-1, 4.82).

Tigers: RHP Keider Montero (0-1, 9.00) starts Monday's series opener against Padres RHP Randy Vasquez (1-1. 1.74).
