HOXIE – The TMP-Marian Monarchs boys’ and girls’ basketball teams
split a pair of league games Tuesday night in Hoxie. The TMP boys got their
first win, while the TMP girls suffered their first league loss.

GIRLS: Hoxie 49, TMP 24 The Hoxie Indians broke an early tie, outscoring TMP 31-8
over a stretch from the first quarter into the third quarter. The Indians stayed
unbeaten in league play in a 49-24 win over the Monarchs Tuesday night in Hays.

The two teams traded the lead early, with TMP (2-3, 1-1 MCL)
&nbsp;leading 6-2 with just over six minutes
to play in the first quarter on a pair of Shaylee Gottschalk field goals and a
Brooke Koenigsman floater in the lane. 

Hoxie (4-1, 2-0 MCL) answered with a 6-0 run of their own,
and then, with the game tied at 8, Hoxie connected on a three-pointer for an
11-8 lead to close out the first quarter.

Hoxie opened the second quarter with an offensive rebound
and putback, sparking a 28-2 run to end the first half and begin the second
half. Hoxie led 28-11 with more than five and a half minutes left in the third quarter.

Hoxie led 35-13 after three quarters on their way to the
49-24 victory.

TMP’s Brooke Koenigsman and Hannah Rose each finished with a
team-high five points.

BOYS: TMP 50, Hoxie 41 The TMP (1-4, 1-1 MCL) boys earned a hard-fought 50-41
victory against the Hoxie Indians Tuesday night in Hoxie, their first victory.

The opening quarter saw six lead changes in the first six minutes
until Carson Liles scored back-to-back inside field goals in the final 12
seconds of the first quarter, putting TMP up 12-9.

Hoxie (2-3, 0-2 MCL) was already to retake the lead in the
second quarter, and TMP was held back to just two field goals.

Those two field goals, a Will Eck three-pointer and Liles's
first three-pointer of the year put TMP up 18-16. 

The Monarchs held Hoxie scoreless over the first half's
final two minutes and two seconds. 

TMP started to pull away in the third quarter. Ty Schmeidler
began to come to life, scoring seven of his team-high 10 points in the third
quarter.

Hoxie briefly closed within three points with just over two
and a half minutes left in the fourth quarter, but TMP outscored the Indians
8-2 down the stretch for a 50-41 TMP Victoria.

Schmeidler and Liles each collected 10 points to lead the
Monarchs. Liles pulled down five rebounds. Grant Nehls added nine points and
seven rebounds.

TMP will travel to take on Central Plains on Friday.

🏀Monarchs split MCL matchups in Hoxie

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Bennett Stirtz scored eight of his 22 points in overtime including the game-winner with 3.4 seconds left to give undefeated Drake a 73-70 win over Kansas State on Tuesday night after blowing a 20-point lead.

Mitch Mascari tied a career high with eight 3-pointers in scoring 22 points for the Bulldogs (10-0). Cam Manyawu added 11 points.

Coleman Hawkins scored 16 points but was just 3 of 8 from the line including 2 of 6 in overtime for Kansas State (6-4). David N’Guessan added 13 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Max Jones scored 12 points and Dug McDaniel 10.

Drake's Daniel Abreu made two free throws to tie the game with 23 seconds left in regulation before K-State's Brendan Hausen missed a well-defended 3 attempt.

In overtime, Stirtz scored five straight points and Abreau jammed home a follow for a six-point edge with two minutes left. The Wildcats scored the next six points with Hawkins hitting a 3 to tie with 12.3 seconds remaining. Stirtz took the inbounds and sank his 3 before Jones' deep 3 went off the back of the rim at the buzzer.

Kansas State tied the game for the first time midway through the second half and took its first lead shortly thereafter.

Mascari was 6 of 6 from the arc in the first half in scoring 18 first-half points for a 36-27 lead. His fifth 3-pointer made it a 20-point lead with six minutes remaining in the period. He finished the game 8 of 10 from the arc.

Saturday, Kansas State plays at Wichita State and Drake is host to Green Bay.

🏀 Drake blows 20-point lead, beats K-State on 3-pointer in overtime

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is preparing to play against Houston on Saturday, unless&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-city-chiefs-patrick-mahomes-injury-b1d2fa37c154828f6f76f78312f0562e">his ailing ankle</a>&nbsp;puts the two-time MVP in such a precarious position that he can't protect himself or he “puts&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-city-chiefs-nfl-analysis-9d7ca814eee4e0a9fe74a208b1698f25">the football team</a>&nbsp;in a bad position.”

Mahomes sustained a mild high-ankle sprain late&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/browns-chiefs-score-mahomes-dc7a77ac602c6aa0c550dd6bf5288f27">in a 21-7 win in Cleveland</a>&nbsp;on Sunday. He began to receive treatment on the plane ride home — “I wasn't do high-knees or anything like that,” he quipped — and spent more than 12 hours getting additional work on it at the practice facility Monday, even though most of the team was given the day off.

Mahomes was back on the practice field Tuesday with Carson Wentz there to back him up.

“You don't want to go out there and put yourself in harm's way. It's football. You're going to take hits. But you want to be able to protect yourself," Mahomes said. "And I don't want to limit the game plan. I want to be able to move around the pocket.”

Mahomes has plenty of experience with ankle injuries to draw from. He sustained a similar one against Jacksonville in Week 1 of the 2019 season, then a more serious one against the Jaguars in the 2022 playoffs. In that case, he was unable to end the game but got enough treatment to play against Cincinnati for the AFC title and Philadelphia in the Super Bowl.

“Jacksonville was worse. That one was pretty significant,” Mahomes said. “Obviously it's responded better, quicker. That would be the best thing to say. But I want to be in a better spot than I was that next game going up against the Bengals.”

Mahomes has the luxury of time that he didn't have two years ago. The Chiefs already have clinched the AFC West title and a spot in the playoffs, and he could conceivably miss a game or two if it meant being fully healthy for the postseason.

Yet there is much riding on this three-game stretch against Houston on Saturday, the Steelers on Christmas Day and the Broncos the final weekend of the regular season. The Chiefs (13-1) are clinging to a two-game lead over the Bills for the No. 1 seed and the lone playoff bye, but Buffalo holds the tiebreaker over them by virtue of their victory earlier this season.

“Every game counts,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “If your guys can play, they play, as long as medically they're fine to go.”

While Mahomes has a reputation for playing through pain, and even arguing with Reid on the sideline to stay in games in which he's been hurt, Reid believes his quarterback will be honest with how his ankle feels throughout the week.

“He's going to go through some stuff and we'll see how that works out for him. And if he can't work, then Carson will take those reps that Pat doesn't,” Reid said. “We have full confidence in Carson if he has to step in and play. I think everybody — coaches and players — have full confidence he can go in and do a nice job.”

Wentz, who signed a $3.325 million contract with Kansas City to replace Blaine Gabbert as Mahomes’ backup, has appeared in nearly 100 games during his NFL career. He completed both of his pass attempts for 20 yards in the closing minutes against the Browns, allowing the Chiefs to run out the clock on their victory.

🏈Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes plans to play against Texans on Saturday despite his high-ankle sprain

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State moved to 6-3 overall on the season with an 84-58 win over Bethel College on Monday evening (Dec. 16) at Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Tigers led by nine at halftime and then pulled away in the second half to win their 18th-straight game over the Threshers.

The Tigers received a challenge from the Threshers in the first 10 minutes of the game. Bethel led by one, 15-14, at the second media break of the opening half, but the Tigers went on an 18-5 run over a nearly six-minute span to take a 12-point lead. The lead reached 13 a pair of times before the margin came back to nine at halftime.

Bethel hit the opening shot of the second half, a 3-point field goal to get the lead back down to six. But, that was the closest the Threshers would get as the Tigers went on a 16-2 run immediately after to stretch the lead to 20. The lead would eventually stay over 20 points from the 6:26 mark to the end of the game. FHSU reached its largest lead of 27 points with 45 seconds remaining before Bethel hit a free throw to make the final margin 26.

Fort Hays State shot 51.9 percent overall as a team and 50 percent (12-of-24) beyond the 3-point line. FHSU was 18-of-23 at the free-throw line (78.3 percent). The Tigers held Bethel to 34.5 percent shooting overall.

Kaleb Hammeke led FHSU with 15 points, while Dan Mukuna had a near-perfect shooting evening with 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Mukuna was 3-of-4 from the field, including 2-of-2 beyond the 3-point line, and 4-of-4 at the free-throw line. Muhamed Kante dished out a team-high five assists. Kyle Grill (12) and Shaun Riley (11) also reached double figures in scoring, while Aidan McDowell had nine points all on 3-point field goals. Eli Lawson had a new season high with seven points.

Carmelo Yakubu led the Threshers with 16 points. He was the only Thresher in double figures for scoring. Nick Bonner pulled down six rebounds and dished out a team-high three assists.

The Tigers will have two games this weekend at home against NCAA Division II opponents. The Tigers host MSU Denver on Friday evening (Dec. 20) at 7 p.m. MSU Denver was ranked No. 22 in the latest NABC Top 25 Poll, but new rankings come out on Tuesday. The Roadrunners are 9-1 overall on the season.

Fort Hays State is back at home for three games in seven days, starting with Bethel College on Monday night. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Tigers are coming off a road non-conference win at William Jewell on Saturday, while the Threshers are coming off a loss in conference play on Saturday evening. FHSU enters at 5-3 overall, while Bethel is 7-6 overall.

Fort Hays State made a big second-half rally at William Jewell on Saturday for a four-point win. The Tigers were down 12 at halftime, got past the Cardinals midway in the second half, and then held on late for the win. The Tigers had five players score in double figures, led by Kaleb Hammeke&nbsp;with 11. Hammeke had the final seven points of the game for FHSU.

The Tigers have won 17 games in a row against Bethel and hold an all-time record of 17-2 against the Threshers. Bethel won the first two meetings ever all the way back in 1925-26. FHSU defeated Bethel by a score of 73-48 last year in Hays. The Tigers are 10-0 against the Threshers under Mark Johnson.

Hammeke&nbsp;leads the Tigers in scoring at 14.1 points per game and assists at 4.4 per game. Kyle Grill&nbsp;(13.4) and Shaun Riley&nbsp;(12.6) also average double figures in scoring. Riley is the team leader in rebounds at 7.1 per game.

The Tigers have the lowest turnovers per game average in the MIAA at 9.4 and own the conference's best assist/turnover ratio at 1.41. The Tigers have committed less than 10 turnovers in five of eight games this season, including a season-low five in their win at William Jewell on Saturday. FHSU has the second-best 3-point field goal percentage in the MIAA at 39 percent.

Bethel has four players averaging double figures in scoring this season, led by Carmelo Yakubu at 14.8 points per game. He is also the team leader in rebounds at 7.6 per game.

DENVER (AP) —&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/Broncos/status/1868446041219203558">Nik Bonitto's defensive touchdown</a>&nbsp;was jaw-dropping.&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/NFLhaterwatch/status/1868434682490372291">Jonathan Taylor's botched touchdown</a>&nbsp;run was head-scratching.

Bonitto foiled a trick play by stepping in front of quarterback Anthony Richardson and hijacking Adonai Mitchell's lateral pass, then racing 50 yards for a touchdown Sunday that sealed the Denver Broncos' 31-13 win over the Indianapolis Colts.

A blunder by Taylor turned the game around in the third quarter. Indy's star running back dropped the ball milliseconds before crossing the goal line on what would have been a 41-yard touchdown.

“That can’t happen," said Taylor, who finished with 107 yards — but no touchdowns — on 22 carries. “No, you’re never consciously aware you’re dropping the ball. Otherwise, you wouldn’t do it.”

The blunder breathed new life into the Broncos, whose special teams and defense would bail out a sputtering offense that managed just 193 yards.

“If he would have scored that touchdown, it would have been even more of a dogfight to get back,” Denver pass rusher Jonathon Cooper said. “We would have had a tougher fight. ... I just hope it never happens to us.”

Denver's defenders dejectedly retreated to the sideline, but suddenly the 76,416 fans roared. Safety P.J. Locke said he looked up and saw the replay on the giant scoreboard and suddenly the Broncos had a holiday gift.

Instead of lining up for the extra point to give the Colts a 20-7 lead, the touchback left the reeling Colts clinging to a six-point edge they would soon relinquish.

“That was a game changer, yeah, absolutely,” Colts coach Shane Steichen said. “Obviously, it hurt us, but he’s one of our leaders. Sometimes that happens in football, but he’s our guy, and that’s what you say to him.”

With five takeaways, the Broncos (9-5) ended a seven-year string of losing records and strengthened their grip on an AFC wild-card berth that would end a playoff drought dating to 2016. They began defense of their Super Bowl 50 title that season with a 4-0 start, which was the last time they sat four games above .500.

The Colts (6-8) blew both an early 10-0 lead and a big opportunity to tighten the AFC wild-card race, and the biggest reasons were Taylor's blunder and Bonitto's plunder.

Denver had just taken its first lead of the game on Bo Nix's 15-yard touchdown toss to tight end Nate Adkins that made it 17-13 when Bonitto scored his second touchdown in two games.

Bonitto, who had a pick-6 against Cleveland before the Broncos' bye week, was in full stride when he caught Mitchell's pass at the midfield logo and raced untouched to the end zone.

The play was officially recorded as a fumble recovery and not a pick-6 because it was a backward pass. Whatever you want to call it, Cooper said it was just the spark the Broncos needed.

“Man, I love playing with this dude,” Cooper said. “His football instincts are off the charts. He's a phenomenal football player. He's got my vote for Defensive Player of the Year.”

Mitchell said his coach had admonished him to throw the ball away if he saw the Broncos sniffing out the trickery, but he said he never sensed Denver had deciphered the play.

“It was there pretty much until 15 turned into Ed Reed and just came through out of nowhere,” Mitchell said.

Denver's five takeaways more than made up for Nix's first three-interception game of his rookie season.

One of Denver's interceptions was by cornerback Patrick Surtain II, who limped to the sideline tent with a sprained right ankle. He went back in the game but was helped off the field just before the 2-minute warning after seemingly aggravating the injury. He left the stadium without comment but wasn't in a walking boot, a good sign because the Broncos have a short week before their next game.

The Broncos' barrage of points started with Wil Lutz's 44-yard field goal that pulled Denver to 13-10 and ended with Nix's 20-yard TD pass to Courtland Sutton.

Richardson completed just five of 17 passes for 56 yards in the first half and one of those completions was to himself. It came in his own end zone after Jonah Ellis batted down his throw.

Richardson capped Indy's opening drive with a 23-yard touchdown run after twice converting on third-and-10.

Both of these AFC wild-card contenders were coming off a bye week and both looked more rusted than rested.

“It won't be fun looking at the tape,” bemoaned Broncos coach Sean Payton.

Imagine how much worse it'll be for Taylor and the Colts.

Colts WR Alec Pierce left in the first half with a concussion.

Broncos RG Quinn Meinerz (shoulder) and RB Jaleel McLaughlin (thigh) both left late in the third quarter. Surtain got hurt in the fourth, as did DT D.J. Jones (finger).

Colts: Host the Tennessee Titans on Sunday.

Broncos: Visit the Los Angeles Chargers on Thursday night.

CLEVELAND (AP) — The only thing the Chiefs had to worry about in the final minutes Sunday was Patrick Mahomes' ankle.

Mahomes threw two touchdown passes before limping off with an injury in the fourth quarter, Xavier Worthy ran for a score and Kansas City finally had a relatively easy win, 21-7 over the mistake-prone Cleveland Browns.

Mahomes connected for TDs in the first half&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/Chiefs/status/1868357953780396068">with Juju Smith-Schuster</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/Chiefs/status/1868373621355274266">Noah Gray</a>&nbsp;as the Chiefs (13-1) built a 21-0 lead and then slogged their way through an ugly second half.

The defending Super Bowl champions have 10 wins by seven points or less, with six coming on the game's final play.

Mahomes didn't finish the game, leaving when he got his ankle rolled up on while being tackled. Carson Wentz replaced him for the final 5:23. Mahomes finished 19 of 38 for 159 yards.

After the game, Mahomes said X-rays were negative. He said he would have lobbied harder to stay in if the Browns had gotten within one score.

“We'll get into the rehab part, the treatment part and try to get back on a short week,” said Mahomes, noting the Chiefs will play again Saturday — the second of three games in 11 days. “With all the adrenaline from the game, it's hard to tell now (if he can play). Usually, it's the day after when you get a good sense of it."

Mahomes was driven to the Chiefs' buses on a cart.

Coach Andy Reid was relieved Mahomes was not more seriously hurt.

“It's not broken, that's all I can tell you,” Reid said. “We'll have to see how it goes down the road.”

The Browns (3-11) tried to put up a fight, but had six turnovers. Other than a&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/Browns/status/1868390624145088796">62-yard TD run from Jerome Ford</a>, Cleveland had few offensive highlights and too many self-inflicted miscues.

Jameis Winston threw more three interceptions — two in the end zone to give him eight in his last three games — and the Browns had two fumbles. The five turnovers made things much easier on Mahomes and the Chiefs, not that they needed a lot of help.

Cleveland running back Nick Chubb suffered a broken foot. It's another setback for the star, who had a devastating knee injury last season.

Winston was pulled after his third pick and replaced by second-year QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson, who also was intercepted. Coach Kevin Stefanski would not commit to a starter for next week.

“You can't have six turnovers and win,” Stefanski said. “At any level.”

Cleveland's Jerry Jeudy had 11 catches for 108 yards and went over 1,000 for the season.

The Chiefs' second TD — Mahomes' 6-yard pass to Gray with 4:46 left in the first half — came on the same play Browns&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/Reflog_18/status/1868374001279795655">star defensive end Myles Garrett left the field in extreme pain</a>&nbsp;with an apparent eye injury.

Garrett was rushing Mahomes and being blocked by Chiefs left tackle Joe Thuney when he suddenly stopped. The league's reigning Defensive Player of the Year immediately grabbed his face mask and pulled off his helmet, flinging it away before dropping to the turf.

He was face down for several minutes before being helped off. As Garrett walked toward the locker room holding a towel to his face, Thuney came over and patted him on the back. Garrett was only gone for a short period before he ran back on to the field and finished the game.

The Chiefs took a 21-0 lead early in the third, capitalizing on a pick by Winston that went off Chubb's hands. Four plays later, Worthy took a deep pitch from Mahomes, turned the corner and scored.

Kansas City's first score was set up by Cleveland's first turnover.

After the Browns forced a three-and-out on Kansas City's first possession, Cleveland's James Proche II fumbled during a punt return and the Chiefs recovered at the 21.

Mahomes then connected with Schuster for a 7-yard TD with 12:12 left in the first quarter.

Taylor Swift ended her world tour. She decided not to hit the road in the NFL just yet.

The pop superstar had been expected to attend the game to cheer on boyfriend Travis Kelce, the Chiefs tight end who grew up in Cleveland. But Swift, who turned 35 on Friday, wasn't on hand despite rumors she would make an appearance.

Taylor has been at several Chiefs games in Kansas City the past two seasons since she began dating Kelce.

Chiefs: S Chamarri Conner suffered a concussion while making a tackle in the second quarter. ... Kelce came up limping after an early play, but walked it off and stayed in. He left the locker room before reporters had access.

Browns: CB Martin Emerson Jr. went to the locker room in the second quarter to be evaluated for a concussion. He did not return. ... DT Shelby Harris (elbow) went out in the second quarter.

LIBERTY, Mo. – Fort Hays State rallied from a 15-point deficit late in the first half and beat William Jewell College 63-59 Saturday at the Mabee Center in a battle of NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago.

Kaleb Hammeke was fouled on a driving layup with 7:31 to play to give the Tigers (5-3) their biggest lead at 61-55. FHSU wouldn't score again until Hammeke's layup with 5.7 seconds left. The Tigers held the Cardinals (4-6)&nbsp; to just four points over the final 10 minutes of the game and&nbsp; The Tigers held the Cardinals to just 2-of-9 shooting and four turnovers in the final 10 minutes.

William Jewell's Jordan Jermain scored 20 of his game-high 25 points in the first half. He hit his first four 3-point shots and made seven of his first eight field-goal attempts overall. The Cardinals shot a 62.5-percent from the field in the first half, including a 6-of-10 effort from beyond the 3-point line to build a 41-29 halftime lead.

Fort Hays State opened the second half on a 10-2 run to pull within four in the first three minutes. After William Jewell pushed the lead back to eight, Shaun Riley scored eight points of a&nbsp;13-4 Tiger run in which they took their first lead since early in the first half on a Dan Makuna layup.&nbsp;

FHSU outscored William Jewell 34-18 in the second half and outscored the Cardinals to just 34.8 percent shooting in the second frame, including just 1-of-7 from beyond the arc. FHSU was shooting 62 percent from the field in the second half but hit just one of their final eight shots.

Hammeke scored FHSU's&nbsp; final seven points and led five Tigers in double-figures with 11 points. Riley, Kyle Grill, R.J, Crawford and Traejon Davis&nbsp;all scored 10 points each. All nine Tigers that played scored. The Tigers out-rebounded Cardinals by seven led by Riley's nine boards. Hammeke dished out a team-high four assists.

Joining Jermain in double figures for the Cardinals were Luke Jordan with 11 and Bryce Mitchell with 10.

Fort Hays State will take just a day off and return to action Monday night at Gross Memorial Coliseum when it takes on Bethel College at 7 p.m. FHSU will be at home for its next three games, all within the span of seven days before the holiday break.&nbsp;&nbsp;

K-State running back D.J. Giddens declares for NFL Draft

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Zeke Mayo hit five 3s and scored 26 points, Hunter Dickinson had 21 points and 14 rebounds, and No. 10 Kansas bounced back from consecutive losses with a 75-60 rout of NC State on Saturday.

Dajuan Harris Jr. added 15 points and six assists for the Jayhawks (8-2), who scored the first 15 points of the game but didn't have it in hand until midway through the second half, when Dickinson scored eight consecutive points to bury the Wolfpack.

Kansas won its 20th consecutive nonconference home game and avoided its first three-game skid since the 2022-23 season.

Ben Middlebrooks had 14 points and Brandon Huntley-Hatfield finished with 12 for the Wolfpack (7-4), who have lost their last 13 games to Kansas since winning their first matchup at Allen Fieldhouse on Dec. 20, 1958.

NC State was able to get the Kansas big men into foul trouble, and that allowed Middlebrooks to have success. But the Wolfpack didn't get enough production from the perimeter, where Dontrez Styles and Marcus Hill struggled.

Kansas proved it could survive foul trouble in the paint. Dickinson had three fouls and KJ Adams Jr. and Flory Bidunga four apiece with 12 minutes left. But the Jayhawks' guards, and Mayo in particular, were able to take over the game.

The Jayhawks led 48-41 with 13:10 left when Mayo rattled in a 3-pointer from the corner. He added a free throw moments later, then a blow-by layup, giving Kansas a 54-41 lead with 12 minutes to go.

5 — Harris hit a layup with 18:14 left to give him 1,001 points for his career. He's the fifth member of the team to surpass that plateau, joining Mayo, Dickinson, David Coit and Shakeel Moore.

NC State plays Rider on Dec. 22. Kansas plays Brown the same day.

The Cardinals fell to Pittsburg State in Kansas City by one point back on November 15 and then by eight points at Washburn on November 23. WJC faces FHSU this weekend and then heads to Wichita to play Newman on December 17. William Jewell also has a one-point loss to Missouri Western this year, so it holds a 1-3 record against MIAA opponents so far this season.
