HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State University Athletics announced the hiring of Alex Hagan as its new head coach for women's soccer on Tuesday, March 24, 2026. Hagan has extensive experience as both a head coach and assistant coach of women's soccer at the collegiate level. He comes to Fort Hays State from Johnson County (Kan.) Community College and becomes the fourth head coach in FHSU women's soccer program history.

"I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to lead the Fort Hays State University Women's Soccer program," said Hagan. "I want to thank the FHSU athletic administration for their confidence in me and their support and guidance throughout this entire process. Their leadership and belief in what we can build here mean a great deal to me. I also want to extend a heartfelt thank you to every staff member I met during my visit to campus. The warmth, kindness, and genuine welcome I received made a huge impact on me. It truly made Fort Hays State feel like the right place not only professionally, but for my family as well. A sense of community and belonging is something we value deeply."

"I am beyond excited to get started and begin building something incredible here at Fort Hays State University. There is tremendous potential in this program, and I can't wait to get to work."

Hagan served as the assistant coach at Johnson County for the last four years under long-time head coach Jim Schwab. Johnson County has consistently been one of the top junior college programs nationally during Schwab's tenure. Hagan helped guide the Cavaliers to a 66-17-7 record in his four seasons, including three-straight seasons of 18 or more wins from 2023 through 2025. Johnson County was the NJCAA national runner-up in both 2023 and 2024. Hagan was an integral part of Johnson County's staff being named 2024 NJCAA D-II National Coaching Staff of the Year by United Soccer Coaches, as well as the regional staff of the year in 2023.

Hagan helped guide Johnson County to three-straight conference titles (2023, 2024, 2025) and two NJCAA Division II national title game appearances (2023, 2024). Over four seasons, Hagan helped coach nine NJCAA D-II All-Americans, six United Soccer Coaches All-Americans, one United Soccer Coaches D-II National Player of the Year, four NJCAA D-II All-Tournament selections, 26 All-Region 6 selections, 28 All-KJCCC selections including two Defensive Players of the Year and one Offensive Player of the Year. The program also excelled in the classroom as JCCC student-athletes earned 35 NJCAA Academic honors, eight selections to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District® Women's At-Large Team, and two selections to the CSC Academic All-America® Women's At-Large Team.

"We are excited to welcome Alex as our next Head Women's Soccer Coach at Fort Hays State University," said FHSU Director of Athletics Dr. Lisa Goddard McGuirk. "Throughout his career, Alex has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to student-athlete success. He has the proven ability of elevating the competitiveness of programs he has served, including helping guide Johnson County Community College to a pair of national championship game appearances. His commitment to excellence and the student-athlete experience will continue to move our program forward."

Prior to his time at Johnson County Community College, Hagan served as the head women's soccer coach at Bethel College in Kansas for five seasons. He took over the Threshers in 2017 and turned a struggling program into a competitor as they made the KCAC Tournament in each of his last two seasons, finishing as high as fifth in the conference. Hagan notched 28 wins over his five seasons leading Bethel, guiding 11 student-athletes to All-KCAC honors.

Hagan's teams were also very involved with community service at Bethel. The KCAC women's soccer coaches recognized these acts by naming Bethel's women's program as the Team of Character two times during Hagan's tenure, while earning the KCAC All-Sport Team of Character in 2018.

Prior to his first head coaching role, Hagan served as an assistant for the Bethel men's program in both 2015 and 2016. As a player, Hagan was a four-year starter for the Bethel men's soccer team from 2012-15, serving as the team's captain three years and leading the Threshers in goals scored each of his four years as a player.
