MAYETTA, Kan. – The Fort Hays State Men's Golf team competed at the Firekeeper Open, April 6-7. Cooper Scheck finished fourth as an individual, while the Tigers as a team placed ninth out of 17 teams competing at Firekeeper Golf Course, a par-72 layout. FHSU posted 298 twice before finishing with 296 in the third round.
Scheck was a steady performer throughout the three-round tournament. He shot a 1-under par 71 in the opening round, an even par 72 in the second, and a 1-over par 73 in the final round to finish even overall. He was one of five golfers in the field to finish at even par or better. The top three finishers were all under par, led by Myles Tarvin of Washburn who won at 8-under par overall.
Scheck had 10 birdies throughout the tournament, four in the first round and three in the each of the last two. Scheck notched his third top-five finish of the season by placing fourth.
Chutithep Rungpajchim finished 32nd individually at 7-over par. He progressively improved throughout the tournament, shooting 5-over (77) in the opening round, 2-over in the second round (74), and even in the final round (72). He carded seven birdies in the tournament. Jordan McCaslin was right behind at 8-over par overall, finishing 41st. He shot rounds of 4-over (76), 3-over (75), and 1-over (73). He had six birdies during the tournament.
Jason Brokaw finished 83rd at +17, shooting rounds of 78, 77, and 78. He had seven birdies in the tournament. Colby Hays placed 93rd at +22 with rounds of 74, 81, and 83. Hays had four birdies. Isaak Bowman played as an individual and shot +27 with rounds of 81, 82, and 80.
Central Oklahoma won the tournament by 13 strokes as a team at 9-under par. Washburn was second at 4-over and Central Missouri was third at 10-over.
Fort Hays State will play in the MIAA Championships next week in Jefferson City, Mo. The tournament runs from April 13-15 at the Jefferson City Country Club.
