Fort Hays State Men's Basketball looks to keep its win streak going on Saturday (Feb. 8) when it hosts Central Oklahoma. The Tigers are seeking a perfect four-game home stand that began last week, entering the game at 10-11 overall and 3-9 in the MIAA. Central Oklahoma is 7-16 overall, 4-10 in the MIAA. Tipoff is at 4 pm, which follows the women's game at 2 pm.

A win for the Tigers on Saturday would push them at least one notch higher in the MIAA standings in their late-season quest to qualify for the MIAA Tournament. The Tigers are alone in 13th&nbsp;in the standings, but could jump as high as 10th&nbsp;with a win Saturday pending other results around the conference. FHSU defeated Kansas Wesleyan, Nebraska-Kearney, and Newman for its current three-game win streak. The top ten teams in the conference at the end of the regular season qualify for the MIAA Tournament in Kansas City.

The Tigers defeated Newman University 79-72 on Thursday night in the first meeting between the teams this season. They will meet again in the regular season finale in Wichita later this month. The Tigers take on Central Oklahoma for the first time this season and own a three-game win streak overall against the Bronchos, which includes a regular season series sweep last year with a six-point win in Hays and a three-point win in Edmond. The Tigers bounced back from a home loss with a 20-point win over Newman on Thursday (Feb. 6, 78-58. The win helped the Tigers prevent consecutive losses inside Gross Memorial Coliseum, something that has not happened for the program since January 15 &amp; 19, 2011. FHSU is 119-7 at home since the start of the 2012-13 season.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5442">Jaden Hobbs</a>&nbsp;is averaging 4.7 assists per game this season, third-most in the MIAA. That total currently sits as the third-highest average in a single season in program history.

After hitting nearly 50 percent from the floor against Newman, the Tigers are now 100-3 under Hobson when they knock down at least 45 percent from the floor.

NORTON - The TMP boys and girls basketball teams were swept in a Mid-Continent League doubleheader Friday night in Norton.

Both the TMP Lady Monarchs and the Norton Lady Jays got off to a bit of a slow start on Friday.&nbsp;

Sophia Balthazor gave TMP an early 3-0 lead on the game's first three and TMP led 5-2 after one quarter.

Norton opened the second quarter on an 8-0 to build a 10-5 lead. TMP cut the deficit back to two points and trailed 14-12 at halftime. The two teams had more turnovers than points in the first half.

Norton opened the second half on an 8-2 run and led TMP 22-14 before the Monarchs came firing back to take the lead at 25-22 on a Kassidi Yost three-point play.

After Norton had cut the TMP lead back to one at the end of the third quarter Balthazor's second three of the game put TMP up 28-24.

TMP extended their lead to five on a Jaci VonLintel three pointer at 35-30 but were held scoreless over the final couple of minutes of the game while Norton scored 12 unanswered and pulled away for the 42-35 win.

TMP's Sophia Balthazor was the on player to score in double-figures in the game. She finished with 10 points.&nbsp;

Hannah Bailey and Tessa Hauser each scored nine points for Norton.

TMP drops to 5-10 and 2-4 and Norton improved to 8-7 and 2-3.

The TMP boys couldn't overcome a season-low 17-percent three-point shooting and saw their 12-game win streak come to an end in a 58-47 loss to Norton.

The two teams traded baskets back and forth in the first quarter with TMP's largest lead at 9-7 on a Bryce Seib field goal. Norton retook the lead on a 6-3 lead to end the first quarter and led 13-12.

The second quarter was much the same with Norton leading by as much as five before TMP cut the deficit back to one at 21-20.

Norton opened the second half on a 7-0 run and built a 28-20 lead. TMP was able to close within two in the third quarter and six at the end of the quarter at 36-30.

In the fourth quarter Norton built a 42-30 lead to start the quarter. TMP closed within three at 48-45 on a Jackson Schulte three but they were get no closer in the 58-47 loss.

Carson Jacobs led TMP with 12 points and Jace Wentling finished 10 points and 10 rebounds.&nbsp;

TMP made just 3-of-18 three point attempts for 17-percent. Both season-lows.

Norton's Jonah Ruder finished with a career-high 25 points.

TMP hosts Phillipsburg next Friday. Norton travels to Oberlin on Tuesday.

A pair of long scoring droughts cost the Hays High Indians a shot at a road upset on Friday night in Dodge City.&nbsp; Hays led by five twice in the first quarter but scored just two points over an eight minute span of the first and second quarter to fall behind 20-11.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Indians closed the gap down to three in the second quarter and trailed by eight heading into the second half.&nbsp; Re Green buried a right corner three pointer to pull Hays within five at 35-30 with 3:30 left to go in the third quarter.&nbsp; The Indians didn't score over the next 8:15 and could not recover as the Red Demons used the time to go on a 15-0 run.

Once Dodge City's advantage reached double figures they were never threatened again winning over Hays 56-34.

Hays had their best shooting game of the year at 54% in the loss.

Hays resumes WAC play with a split in Dodge City



SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The No. 22 Fort Hays State wrestling team won seven in a 33-13 road win over Drury on Friday (Feb. 7). The Tigers are now 5-5 in dual action, while the Panthers dip to 2-6 this season.

The Tigers took advantage of two open weights for Drury early on, starting things off with a 12-0 lead after forfeits at 125 pounds and 133 pounds. LUBBOCK, Texas – Fort Hays State Softball opened its 2020 season on Friday by splitting a pair of games with Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opponents. The Tigers claimed their season opener with an offensive outburst, 14-10 over UC-Colorado Springs, before falling to Chadron State 4-1.

Fort Hays State 14, UC-Colorado Springs 10 Both teams were relatively quiet early in the season opener as FHSU led just 1-0 through two innings. The remainder of the game, however, would see 23 runs scored between the two squads with FHSU coming out of the fray with the win.

The Tigers took their early 1-0 lead on an RBI triple by&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5349">Grace Philop</a>&nbsp;in the second inning. At that point,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5348">Michaelanne Nelson</a>&nbsp;was cruising along with just one hit allowed.

Nelson continued what would be a string of seven consecutive outs in the third inning before running into her first bit of trouble. With two outs in the frame, the Mountain Lions scratched out a base hit and a walk. That set the table for clean-up hitter Payton Romines to hit a 3-run homer that instantly swung the score in favor of UCCS, 3-1.

The Tiger offense, however, was just getting started as they roared back with four runs in the third, swiping the lead back from the Mountain Lions. An error to start the inning off the bat of&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5352">Hannah Gates</a>&nbsp;got the rally underway.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5339">Katie Adler</a>&nbsp;followed with a single before&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5358">Kristen Reed</a>&nbsp;laced an RBI double to plate Gates.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5341">Sara Breckbill</a>&nbsp;got into the extra-base hit act with a double of her own, driving in both Adler and Reed. Philop would later cap the rally with an RBI single to score Breckbill.

Nelson faced a bases-loaded jam early in the fourth that turned into three runs for UCCS in another shift of the lead. An RBI groundout, a sacrifice fly RBI, and an RBI single pushed the three runners across that got on to start the inning for UCCS. The Mountain Lions were back in front 6-5.

A two-out error by UCCS in the fourth proved costly as&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5351">Alexis Velazquez</a>&nbsp;hit an RBI double to right field, tying the game at 6-6. Velazquez had more fireworks in her bat an inning later.

Despite a couple of rough patches in the third and fourth, Nelson quieted the Mountain Lion bats in the fifth with a pair of strikeouts and a ground out. That would be the final scoreless half inning in the game. The Tigers went on to put up a big rally in the bottom half of the inning, which ultimately decided the game.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5344">Hailey Chapman</a>&nbsp;took the ball in the circle for the final two innings, but gave up four runs. A pair of insurance runs by the Tigers in the sixth helped, pushing a 12-9 lead out to 14-9 on RBI singles from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5345">Megan Feiner</a>&nbsp;and Adler. UCCS plated just one run in the seventh, which made the final margin of four runs.

Nelson picked up the win in the starting effort, going 5.0 innings with six runs allowed on five hits and five walks. She struck out eight batters. Chapman fanned four batters, but allowed six hits in her two innings of work.

Friday's Finals Show February 7th 2020

Fort Hays State Softball opens its 2020 season Friday through Sunday at the Lubbock Sports College Invitational. FHSU is coming 
off a 24-25 season, posting its most wins in a season since 2015. 

A 
veteran squad with 15 upperclassmen has 23 non-conference games on the 
slate before jumping into conference play in early March. The Tigers 
will play five games this weekend, including two Friday, two Saturday, 
and one Sunday.

- Fort Hays State and UC-Colorado Springs last met in 2018 in Colorado 
Springs. UCCS took two games of a three-game series, which served as the
 season-opening games that season. UCCS will be FHSU's first opponent of
 the season for the second time in three years. FHSU leads the all-time 
series with UCCS 25-15.


- Fort Hays State and Chadron State meet for just the second time in 
history. Chadron State won the first meeting, which was the 
season-opening game of the 2017 season for the Tigers, by a score of 1-0
 in Canyon, Texas.


- Fort Hays State and Southern Nazarene meet for the first time since 
the 2017 season. FHSU is 3-0 all-time against SNU. FHSU won the 2017 
meeting with SNU 5-1 in Bentonville, Arkansas.


- FHSU and New Mexico Highlands meet for the first time since 2006, when
 both were members of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. FHSU moved

The annual Hays Eagles youth baseball tournament will be April 18 and 19 at Bickle-Schmidt Sports Complex in Hays.&nbsp;

Teams signing up for Hays Eagles youth baseball tournament

HAYS, Kan. – Nyjee Wright hit two key 3-pointers, made four
free throws and blocked a shot in the final three minutes to help Fort Hays State
to a 79-72 win over Newman Thursday at Gross Coliseum. Wright scored a
career-high 26 points, dished out four assists without a turnover and had two
steals as the Tigers (10-11, 309 MIAA) win their third straight.

The Tigers hit only two of their first ten shots and fell
behind by 11 less than eight minutes into the game. They responded by hitting
nine of their next 13 shots over a seven minute stretch. The 24-6 run pushed
their lead to seven.

FHSU would go up eight early in the second half, but a 7-0
run by the Jets (8-15, 2-12 MIAA) tie the game 52-52 with 11:07 to play.
Neither team would lead by more than three until a Wright 3-pointer which put
the Tigers up 69-64 with 2:47 to play.

A three-point play by Juwan Davidson pulled the Jets within
one at 70-69 with 1:21 left but Wright would hit a three from the right wing on
the next possession to push the lead to four. The Jets missed a layup then
fouled Jake Hutchings who hit one of two free throws to make it 74-69. 

Wright got a steal and was fouled and hit both ends of a one
and one to push the Tigers lead to 76-69.

Following a David Javorsky deep three which pulled Newman
within 76-72 with 23 seconds to play, Wright hit two more free throws then got
his hand on Tyjil Hereford three-point try in the closing seconds.

Aaron Nicholson scored 15 for the Tigers, Devin Davis added
13 and Jared Vitztum 12 before fouling out.

Marshawn Blackmon had 21 points and nine rebounds to lead
the Jets.

The Tigers shot 56-percent in the second half and finished
at 51-percent for the game.

Tigers beat Jets for third straight win

quarter to turn a seven-point deficit into a seven-point halftime lead and beat
the Newman Jets 78-58 Thursday night at Gross Coliseum. 

The 23rd-ranked Tigers
(17-4, 8-4 MIAA) made only four of their first 14 shots but went 12-of-16 from
the floor in the second quarter.

FHSU scored seven straight early in the third quarter to
push their lead to 11 then put the game away with an 11-0 run the fourth.

Taylor Rolfs led four Tigers in double-figures with 17
points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals. Cydney Bergman scored 11 off
the bench on 4-of-4 shooting. Jaden Hobbs and Belle Barbieri both added 10.

Kaitlyn Potter his six 3-pointers and came off the bench to
lead the Jets (9-14, 4-10 MIAA) with 24 points.

Strong second quarter lifts 23rd-ranked Tiger women past Newman

Fort Hays State head volleyball coach <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/coaches.aspx?rc=818">Jessica Wood-Atkins</a>
 has announced the signing of four student-athletes that will join the 
squad for the 2020 season. This year's class includes Morgan McIntire, 
Caitlyn Rexroat, Carly Rodaway and Riley Tinder.

Morgan McIntire | Defensive Specialist/Outside Hitter | 5-8


			Morgan McIntire joins the Tigers after four years at Gardner Edgerton
 High School. McIntire earned All-State honors as a senior in 2019 while
 earning all-league honors three times. She helped the Trailblazers to a
 pair of State Championship appearances, including a third-place finish 
in 2019. The defensive specialist/outside hitter led all of Kansas Class
 6A with 492 kills as a senior. She is a member of the 1000/1000 team, 
recording 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in her career at Gardner Edgerton. 
McIntire is a member of the National Honor Society, she was listed on 
the high honor roll all four years and will graduate in the top 10% of 
her graduating class.

Caitlyn Rexroat | Defensive Specialist/Libero | 5-9


			Caitlyn Rexroat heads to Hays from Spring Hill High School in Spring 
Hill, Kan. She was picked as a second team all-league selection as a 
senior in 2019 after helping the Broncos to the State Tournament for the
 first time in 34 years. The defensive specialist/libero tallied 498 
digs in her senior season. She was a three-time letterwinner in both 
volleyball and track and field.

Carly Rodaway joins the Fort Hays State squad from Pius X High School
 in Lincoln, Neb. The rightside hitter earned three volleyball letters 
and three track and field letters for the Thunderbolts, helping Pius X 
to a Class A State runner-up finishes in 2018 and 2019. She was selected
 to play in the 2020 Nebraska Coaches Association all-star volleyball 
match after her strong performance as a senior in 2019. Rodaway was a 
member of the National Honor Society throughout her high school tenure. 
She was high school teammates with current Tigers <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5546">Morgan Christiansen</a> and <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5549">Delaney Humm</a>.

Riley Tinder | Outside Hitter/Rightside Hitter/Defensive Specialist | 5-10


			Riley Tinder joins the Tigers after a strong career at 
Basehor-Linwood High School. She was a four-time letterwinner in 
volleyball, earning All-State honors once and all-league honors three 
times. She set the school record for the most digs and the most kills as
 a senior in 2019. The Basehor, Kan. native picked up second team 
All-State honors as a sophomore in 2017 while earning a spot on the 4A 
all-state tournament team. Tinder is a three-time recipient of the KVA 
All-Academic award. She also played basketball and track and field 
throughout her high school tenure, earning multiple all-league honors in
 basketball and qualifying for the state meet on the track each year.

This is the first of two regular season meetings between the teams. The Tigers enter at 9-11 overall, 2-9 in the MIAA, while the Jets are 8-14 overall, 2-11 in the MIAA.

The Tigers are looking for their first three-game win streak of the season on Thursday night. FHSU began its current four-game home stand with wins over Kansas Wesleyan and Nebraska-Kearney last week.

FHSU held a five-game win streak in the series with Newman until last year. The Jets edged the Tigers in a non-conference game in Wichita, 76-75. There were 18 lead changes in that game and Newman scored the final two points with five seconds remaining at the free-throw line.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5315">Jared Vitztum</a>&nbsp;continues to lead FHSU in scoring and rebounding, averaging 13.4 points and 7.7 rebounds per game respectively.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5311">Devin Davis</a>&nbsp;is the only other Tiger averaging double figures in scoring at 10.1 points per game. The Tigers are one of the top free-throw shooting teams in the nation at 78.8 percent, which ranks 14th&nbsp;in NCAA Division II.

The 23rd-ranked&nbsp;Fort Hays State women's basketball team has played Newman University 17 times since 1983, but the two teams will meet as MIAA rivals for the first time ever on Thursday inside Gross Memorial Coliseum. Opening tip between the Tigers (16-4, 7-4 MIAA) and Jets (9-13, 4-9 MIAA) is set for 5:30 p.m.

Trips to the foul line could be few and far between on Thursday, with the Tigers (13.2 fouls/game) and Jets (13.3 fouls/game) ranking sixth and seventh in DII, respectively, in fewest personal fouls per game.

Newman makes the short drive to Hays with a 9-13 record on the year, including a 4-9 mark in their first season as associate members of the MIAA. The Jets have not won a road game in two months (12/7 at Rogers State, losing their last four on the road. Newman is 3-7 away from Fugate Gymnasium this season. The Jets average 63.7 points per contest, ranking 10th in the MIAA, while allowing the sixth-fewest points per game at 61.8 points per game. Kaitlyn Potter has attempted the third-most 3-pointers in DII this year, firing off 199 shots from behind the arc. She ranks seventh in 3-point makes with 70 and leads the MIAA in both categories. Potter leads the team and ranks third in the MIAA with an average of 16.6 points per night.

Clark Hunt recalls his father’s memory of the first Super Bowl win in
celebrating the team’s victory over the San Francisco 49ers in front of a sea
of read at Union Station.

Hunt tells Chiefs fans at
the Super Bowl rally about Lamar Hunt’s favorite memory, reading from a letter
written by his father months before his death in which he wrote about January
12th, 1970.

“It specifically relates to
the victory parade and celebration through the downtown area and on to Liberty
Memorial in Kansas City. Thousands of fans had congregated to be part of the
event,” Hunt reads. “The Chiefs winning the game the day before was fun, but
seeing the reactions of the fans was the icing on the cake for my best day.”

Owners, executives, and
players interact with fans in a celebration of the team’s first Super Bowl
victory in 50 years with hundreds of thousands, if not more than a million, coming
to downtown Kansas City and crowding between Union State and Liberty Memorial
to cheer on their team.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes,
who apologizes that he’s losing his voice, tells Chiefs fans he had goals when
he was drafted by the club.

“When I became the starter
for Kansas City, the first thing I wanted to do was bring the Lamar Hunt Trophy
back to Kansas City, back to this organization,” Mahomes tells the crowd. “And
the second most important thing I wanted to do was get the Lombardi Trophy for
the greatest coach of all time, Andy Reid, baby!”

Chiefs Tight End Travis
Kelce tells the crowd that he and his teammates love their fans.

“This is the most beautiful
scene I’ve ever witnessed in my life. I love this city to death. I promise you,
from here to the end, I cherish every moment with you all and I promise you
everybody here feels the exact same way,” Kelce says.

Kansas City defeated San
Francisco in Miami in a stunning comeback Sunday, scoring three unanswered
touchdowns in the 4th quarter, winning 31-20.
