🏀 TMP splits doubleheader with Hoxie

HOXIE – The TMP-Marian girls and boys basketball teams split a road doubleheader with the Hoxie Indians Tuesday.

Girls: TMP 52, Hoxie 22

The TMP Lady Monarchs outscored Hoxie 30-12 in the second half on their way to a 52-22 win over the Indians.

The game was close early, after TMP opened the game on a 5-2 run Hoxie was able to tie the game with a three-pointer but Sophia Balthazor answered with a three of her own to put TMP up 8-5.

The three also sparked a 10-2 run that was bookended by a pair of Balthazor three’s propelling TMP to a 15-8 first quarter lead.

The second quarter was a low scoring affair that saw TMP’s Jaci VonLintel score all seven of the Monarchs points in the quarter as the outscored Hoxie 7-3. TMP led 22-10 at the halftime break.

Hoxie scored five straight points to open the second half and cut the Monarch lead to seven at 22-15. But TMP had an answer. The put together a 26-2 run to end the third quarter and begin the fourth to take a commanding 48-17 lead late in the fourth quarter.

TMP improved to 6-1 and 3-0 in the Mid-Continent League with the 52-22 win. They also earned their fifth win in-a-row.

Game Highlights

Emilee Lane scored in double figures for a third straight game with 18 points. Jaci VonLintel and Sophia Balthazor each added 10 points.

Hoxie drops to 3-3 and 1-3 in the MCL.

Boys: Hoxie 60, TMP 54

The boys game featured a pair of unbeaten teams in the MCL and the Monarchs were able to erase a double-digit deficit it wasn’t enough as they fall 60-54.

The Monarchs got off to a slow start offensively and that allowed Hoxie to build an early lead. They led 6-2 to open the game before TMP tied the game at six and again at eight. Hoxie led after one quarter 10-8.

The Indians opened the second quarter on a 10-2 run and double up the Monarchs at 20-10. They took their largest lead of the first half at 24-12 before TMP score the final six points of the first half to trial 24-18 at the break.

The Monarchs were able to chip away at the Hoxie lead in the second half and even took a one-point lead at 35-34 on a Jackson Schulte three-pointer. But the lead would be short-lived and the only lead of the game for TMP.

The Monarchs did tie the game at 42 early in the fourth quarter but Hoxie scored six straight to extend the lead to 48-42.

TMP hung tight was Hoxie down the stretch in the fourth quarter until Hoxie outscored TMP 10-2 in the final minutes of the game to take a 60-51 lead. TMP got a late three to make it 60-54 Hoxie.

Game highlights

Hoxie’s Harlan Ohbioha led all scorers with 34 points. The seven-footer added 10 rebounds and blocked seven shots.

TMP’s Jackson Schulte paced the Monarchs with 22 points.

TMP drops 5-2 and 2-1 in the MCL. Hoxie improves to 6-0 and 3-0 in the MCL.
