FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) — Drew Timme scored 25 points, Jalen Suggs added 24 and Corey Kispert had 23 to help No. 1 Gonzaga beat No. 6 Kansas 102-90 on Thursday in the season opener for both teams.

The Bulldogs built a double-digit lead in the first half at the Rocket Mortgage Fort Myers Tip-Off, then saw the Jayhawks tie it twice in the second half before putting them away. Gonzaga went on a 22-7 run to go up 96-78.

Suggs, who got in foul trouble in the first half, scored 17 of his 24 in the second half.

Marcus Garrett led Kansas with 22 points, and Ochai Agbaji added 17 points. Agbai picked up his fourth foul midway through the second half, which hurt the Jayhawks. When he left, Kansas trailed 70-67.

The Jayhawks rallied from a 14-point deficit in the first half to tie it at 57.

On Friday, Gonzaga will play Auburn, and Kansas will face St. Joseph’s.

The Kansas winter sports season will begin on schedule after a vote of the board of directors of the Kansas High School Activities Association.

KSHSAA rules will allow play to begin on Dec. 1, with a moratorium on activities from Dec. 23 to Jan. 7. Practices can resume Jan. 4, and games will be allowed to resume Jan. 8.

No fans will be allowed to attend high school and middle school games Dec. 1 to Jan. 28, with local jurisdictions making the determination of resuming attendance Jan. 29. The issue of spectators could be taken up by the KSHSAA board at a later date.

Other items resulting from the KSHSAA Board of Directors Meeting:

· Basketball may have a maximum of 20 games, exclusive of the postseason.

· Swimming and Diving may have a maximum of 10 competitions, exclusive of the state meet.

· Boys and Girls Wrestling may have a maximum of 18 events and no more than 30 competitions points, exclusive of the postseason.

The plans were approved by the MIAA Athletic Administrators Council (AAC) on November 24.&nbsp; For volleyball, MIAA members will play an eight-match schedule against teams in their division, which will be based on geographical location. The schedule will begin the week of February 22 and conclude the week of April 11. For flexibility, all dates and locations will be mutually agreed upon by participating members. Along with the eight-match MIAA schedule, institutions will be permitted to schedule up to the NCAA maximum of 20 contests with outside competition this spring (2021) and will decide when those competitions occur during each school’s championship segment. The 2021 spring volleyball season will culminate with all teams being invited to a postseason tournament to be held on April 16-17.&nbsp; In women’s soccer, the Association will play a six-match schedule with two postseason matches. Matches will begin the week of March 29, 2021, and conclude the week of April 26, 2021. Three senior girls are out for basketball at Hays High school. Those three will be hearing from their fourth different head coach. Ginny Ke, Maiah Lummus, and Re Green though have some experience with the new coach. Len Melvin takes over the Indian program and coached the senior class when they were eighth graders. Melvin also coach the current sophomore class as youth players through eighth grade.

Hays will try to improve on a 6-15 record from 2019-2020. The Indians picked up wins over Life Prep Academy, Great Bend, Highland Park, Valley Center and Abilene twice. Aleyia Ruder is the leading returning scorer at nine points and and added a team high five boards per game.

A new year, another new coach for Hays High Girls

Inside hotel rooms in Emporia last March the Hays High boys basketball team was preparing to play in the final four of the 5A State tournament. 

The run ended in the same hotel room without a shot taken. 

COVID-19 ended the state tournaments across the state of Kansas and the Indians were among the "Forever Four" teams that didn't get to finish their season.

Flash forward to mid-November and the Indians are back on the court under second year coach Alex Hutchins. Hays graduated just two players from last year's squad so expectations are high for 2020-2021. 

According to Hutchins, though, the team is already practicing with a chip on their should because of the way last season ended.

Hays High was 17-6 last year but finished the year unranked. The Indians return their top five scorers. TJ Nunnery (10 ppg), Dalyn Schwarz (9.8 ppg), Carson Kieffer (7.5 ppg) and Jason Krannawitter (7 ppg) were mainstays in the starting line up. Jace Linenberger (7 ppg) came off the bench and is expected to be in the starting lineup this season.

Hays opens the season by hosting the Gerald Mitchell Hays City Shootout December 3rd-5th.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Even after Jason Witten’s touchdown put the Las Vegas Raiders ahead with 1:43 to play, the mood on the Kansas City Chiefs’ sideline was calm and cool.

Not much can stop the Super Bowl champs lately. Not when they have the quarterback who makes everything go.

“We’ve got Patrick Mahomes,” running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire said. “I’m not worried about anything.”

Mahomes threw&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nfl.com/videos/can-t-miss-play-mahomes-laser-pass-gives-k-c-lead-in-final-seconds" target="_blank">a 22-yard touchdown pass&nbsp;</a>to Travis Kelce with 28 seconds to play, and the Chiefs avenged their only loss in the last 12 months with a 35-31 victory over the Raiders on Sunday night.

Mahomes passed for 348 yards and led two go-ahead scoring drives in the frantic fourth quarter for the Chiefs (9-1), who split their season series with Las Vegas (6-4) in dramatic fashion. Kansas City also took firm control of the race for its fifth straight AFC West title with an assertive comeback in its closest rivals’ home building.

“I’d take him over everybody,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said of Mahomes. “And I’m lucky to have him, as we are as a football team, as we are as a city. When you’re behind, he can make things happen.”

The Chiefs’ supreme confidence in their Super Bowl MVP wasn’t shaken when they lost 40-32 at home to Las Vegas last month, prompting the Raiders to take&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nfl-kansas-city-football-andy-reid-kansas-city-chiefs-57897ecc354e9124f8370b189afee9b2">a celebratory victory lap around Arrowhead Stadium</a>&nbsp;in their buses.

Kansas City also didn’t worry when Mahomes threw only his second interception of the season late in the first half of the rematch.

DENVER (AP) — The Denver Broncos sent rookie Tua Tagovailoa tottering to the sideline, benched early in the fourth quarter after his worst game as a pro, one that included six sacks and just 83 yards passing.

For doing such a good job, they nearly paid a big price.

“I was happy as hell,” said Melvin Gordon, who rushed for two touchdowns but fumbled on the way in for his third score, giving the Dolphins (6-4) one last chance.

The Broncos (4-6) snapped Miami’s five-game winning streak and kept Tagovailoa from joining Ben Roethlisberger as the only rookie QBs in the past 40 years to win their first four starts.

But they had to sweat out Fitzpatrick’s long drive at the end.

With Gordon about to score his third touchdown, linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel atoned for a pair of penalties on the previous play by punching the ball loose at the 1 and safety Eric Rowe recovered.

Fitzpatrick, who drove Miami to a field goal after replacing Tagovailoa, started at his 1 and drove the Dolphins to the Denver 15-yard line, where his third-and-8 pass was picked off by Simmons.

“It’s milliseconds,” Fitzpatrick said after Miami’s first loss since Oct. 4. “If he had been a step slower maybe that ball gets in there and we’re having a happy press conference.”

Tagovailoa appeared to be limping on the sideline after his final sack, by Bradley Chubb, but Dolphins coach Brian Flores said the left-hander wasn’t hurt.

“Tua wasn’t injured. We just felt like it was the best move at that point in the game,” Flores said. “We had to get in two-minute mode and we just felt like he (Fitzpatrick) gave us the best chance to win the game.”

Flores and Fitzpatrick both insisted there was no quarterback quandary in South Beach, however.

“There’s no controversy,” Fitzpatrick said. “This is his team. He is going to continue to lead the team, and we’ve all just got to pull in the right direction.”

Fitzpatrick completed 12 of 18 passes for 117 yards — better than Tagovailoa’s line of 11-for-20 for 83 — but Simmons intercepted his underthrown pass in the end zone to make it all moot.

“Fitzpatrick, there at the end of the game he’s moving the ball really well,” Simmons said, “and we just kept telling ourselves defensively we’ve got to make a play ... because he’s going to be aggressive. I mean, that’s just how he’s made his living.”

The Broncos ran out the clock with Drew Lock completing a 61-yard pass to Tim Patrick on fourth-and-14 from his 16, a play that began with 4 seconds remaining.

Lock completed 18 of 30 passes for 270 yards with no touchdowns and an interception. He started despite missing practice time during the week because of bruised ribs he suffered last week at Las Vegas.

He wasn’t sacked at all Sunday and bounced back nicely after throwing his 11th interception on Denver’s first series.

Gordon put Denver ahead 20-10 in the third quarter when he&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Broncos/status/1330650065971466241?s=20" target="_blank">scored from 20 yards.</a>

Brandon McManus nailed a 47-yard field goal as the first half ended, sending the Broncos into the tunnel with a 13-10 lead. It was the first time in six games that Miami had been held to fewer than 17 points in the first half.

The Broncos got off to another bad start, failing to score a touchdown on the opening drive for the 12th consecutive time when Lock threw his 11th interception of the season.

Xavien Howard stepped in front of Patrick and&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/MiamiDolphins/status/1330620872563023879?s=20" target="_blank">picked off his sixth pass</a>&nbsp;of 2020, giving Miami the ball at the Denver 22.

It was Lock’s league-high sixth straight game with an interception and came on his second throw.

Tagovailoa’s first career interception, by Simmons, two plays later was negated by A.J. Bouye’s holding call, and Bouye was beaten by Parker for a&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/thecheckdown/status/1330623729882185728?s=20" target="_blank">toe-tapping 3-yard touchdown catch</a>&nbsp;that put Miami ahead 7-0.

TOPEKA —&nbsp;On Wednesday, the KSHSAA Executive
Board received and reviewed data regarding the impact of COVID-19 on the
interscholastic activity programs. In recognition of the recent rapid
deterioration of Kansas health evidenced by elevated positivity rates, the
impact of other illnesses on top of COVID-19 in an overburdened health care
system, and moving interscholastic activities indoors, the Executive Board
unanimously supported proposing these alterations for consideration by the full
Board of Directors. Those actions would adjust the beginning of the competition
date to the winter activity season and extend the winter moratorium. The full
details of the recommendations are below.

The KSHSAA Board of Directors will
discuss these proposals during a special meeting to be held virtually, November
24th at 1:00 pm. Details of the meeting will be sent to the Board of Directors.

Kacey Kennett, a stalwart on the Fort Hays State University women’s basketball team the past four years, is back.

No, she didn’t receive an extra year of eligibility from the NCAA because of COVID-19. Instead, she will be in the film booth and on the sidelines as a student assistant coach for the Tigers while working on her master’s degree in public health administration.

As Kennett looks forward to the start of the season, she wants to impress on the current Tigers the importance of embracing the moment.

“I tell the players, especially the seniors, to stay in the moment,” she said. “because no games are given to you at this point.”

Such was the case already this season, even before it got started. The women’s games with Washburn University and Emporia State University originally scheduled for the home opening week today and Saturday have been postponed because of COVID-19 protocols. “With COVID-19, we don’t know what could change week to week, day to day,” Kennett said.

Kennett found that out the hard way earlier this year. Of all the lessons she learned from playing the game of basketball, the most impactful one might have been the last one of her college career.

Kennett was one of the seniors on the Fort Hays State University women’s team looking forward to one last chance at making the Elite Eight of the NCAA Division II Tournament last spring.

FHSU finished the season strong and earned a berth in the Central Regional in Warrensburg, Mo., in March.

The players naturally were excited but a little nervous about playing in a near-empty arena. The team had learned while en route to the tournament that attendance would be limited to mostly just family members because of the Coronavirus outbreak.

This would be quite a change for the Tigers, who were used to playing in front of large crowds in Gross Memorial Coliseum and on the road in MIAA arenas. The Tiger women’s team has been ranked second in home attendance in NCAA Division II for the past six years running.

But college athletes are adaptable, and Kennett and her teammates seemed to take it in stride, welcoming a new experience.

Kennett said they chatted about how “weird” it would be in that kind of atmosphere and were joking about it as they checked into their hotel.

Then, barely settled into their hotel rooms, the players received the shocking news that the regional tournament, and all post-season action for NCAA Division II, was canceled because of the outbreak.

Just like that, Kennett’s senior season – and her college basketball career – was over.

Like any athlete, Kennett had experienced disappointments over the years. She knew that with basketball, nothing is certain.

“You’ve always got to be ready for whatever is thrown at you,” she said.

But this was more deflating than any loss.

“Oh, wow, it was so surreal when we found out,” Kennett said. “There was a lot of sadness, crying, all kinds of emotions.”

The Tigers got back on the bus and returned to Hays that same night. They learned more discouraging news on the return trip home. FHSU was moving classes to online learning for the remainder of the spring. A week later, students were asked to leave campus.

Now eight months later, following the most unusual sequence of events in her life, Kennett finds herself back in familiar territory. She graduated in May and decided to return to her alma mater to work on her master’s. As she anticipated the start of the season, Kennett reflected on life lessons learned during the past several months.

“After really thinking about it, even though we were disappointed with the way last season ended, a lot of us realized how grateful we should be to have this kind of opportunity,” she said. “We got to come to school and play basketball while getting our education.”

Kennett hopes she can pass on that knowledge of basketball – and life – to younger players.

“I just enjoy being around the game, whether playing or coaching or being in the stands as a fan,” she said. “With coaching, it’s fun see the flip side of what I’ve been accustomed to as a player. I look forward to bringing what I’ve learned and experienced and hopefully help the current team.”

Kennett has started more games (116) than any other player in FHSU women’s basketball history, and she is one of only 21 who have scored more than 1,000 career points. She moved up to ninth on the list her senior year and finished her career with 1,393 points. A 6-foot guard, Kacey also ranks second on the Tigers’ all-time list for career 3-pointers made (176).

Kennett, a three-time All-MIAA pick and a finalist for the MIAA Winter Student-Athlete-of-the-Year Award this past year, was a standout in the classroom, too. She&nbsp;was a three-time recipient of the MIAA Scholar-Athlete Award, given to individuals with All-MIAA honors and a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher in the same year. She made the MIAA Academic Honor Roll all four years.

Now, Kennett said her goal is to help the current players succeed.

“I’ll be the first one to rebound for them, make up some drills,” she said, “whatever it takes to help them improve their game.”

Most of all, Kennett wants to impress on the players the importance of enjoying the moment.

“I think you have to embrace the opportunity, even if it’s not exactly where you want to be at that moment,” she said. “Your college career moves so fast. You blink, and it’s over.”

A week later, students were asked to leave campus.Now eight months later, following the most unusual sequence of events in her life, Kennett finds herself back in familiar territory. She graduated in May and decided to return to her alma mater to work on her master’s. As she anticipated the start of the season, Kennett reflected on life lessons learned during the past several months.“After really thinking about it, even though we were disappointed with the way last season ended, a lot of us realized how grateful we should be to have this kind of opportunity,” she said. “We got to come to school and play basketball while getting our education.”Kennett hopes she can pass on that knowledge of basketball – and life – to younger players.“I just enjoy being around the game, whether playing or coaching or being in the stands as a fan,” she said. “With coaching, it’s fun see the flip side of what I’ve been accustomed to as a player. I look forward to bringing what I’ve learned and experienced and hopefully help the current team.”Kennett has started more games (116) than any other player in FHSU women’s basketball history, and she is one of only 21 who have scored more than 1,000 career points. She moved up to ninth on the list her senior year and finished her career with 1,393 points. A 6-foot guard, Kacey also ranks second on the Tigers’ all-time list for career 3-pointers made (176).Kennett, a three-time All-MIAA pick and a finalist for the MIAA Winter Student-Athlete-of-the-Year Award this past year, was a standout in the classroom, too. She&nbsp;was a three-time recipient of the MIAA Scholar-Athlete Award, given to individuals with All-MIAA honors and a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher in the same year. She made the MIAA Academic Honor Roll all four years.Now, Kennett said her goal is to help the current players succeed.“I’ll be the first one to rebound for them, make up some drills,” she said, “whatever it takes to help them improve their game.”Most of all, Kennett wants to impress on the players the importance of enjoying the moment.“I think you have to embrace the opportunity, even if it’s not exactly where you want to be at that moment,” she said. “Your college career moves so fast. You blink, and it’s over.”

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Brock Purdy passed for 236 yards and three touchdowns and No. 17 Iowa State extended a historic start in Big 12 play, beating the Wildcats 45-0 on Saturday.

The Cyclones (6-2) cruised to their most-lopsided win over Kansas State in 77 years. They remain in first place in the Big 12 after improving to 6-1 in the conference and matching the school record for league wins.

Iowa State hadn’t had such a wide winning margin against the Wildcats since beating them 48-0 in 1943. It was the Cyclones’ biggest win over a Big 12 opponent since routing Kansas 45-0 three years ago.

“To me, it’s not about offense and defense,” Iowa State coach Matt Campbell said. “When we play great football, we’re playing as one team. It’s playing together.”

Kansas State (4-4, 4-3), which won 11 of the previous 12 meetings, started to unravel after failing to score on an early first-and-goal from the 3.

“Our offense had a great first drive and couldn’t finish and then sputtered after that,” Wildcats coach Chris Klieman said. “Frustrating in all phases. We need to improve.”

Purdy completed 10 of his first 12 passes for 156 yards to six receivers and all three of his touchdowns.

Breece Hall was Iowa State’s leading rusher with 135 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries. Hall ran for touchdowns of 33 and 21 yards as the Cyclones pushed the lead to 35-0 before half.

“The whole offense, starting with our offensive line and quarterback, I think we had great precision,” Iowa State receiver Xavier Hutchinson said after making six catches for 111 yards and a touchdown.

Kansas State struggled with quarterback Will Howard, who completed just three of his first 9 attempts and was replaced after throwing an interception late in the second quarter.

“I thought Will took a pretty good shot early in the second quarter and kind of got rattled a little bit,” Klieman said. “After he threw the interception, I thought ’Let’s let Nick (Ast) have an opportunity.‴

Purdy, who finished 16 for 20, also ran seven times for 59 yards.

“I don’t know if that was completely by design,” Campbell said of Purdy’s success running the ball. “I think it’s more a tribute to Brock’s continued growth.”

Iowa State, which outgained the Wildcats 539-149, now turns its attention to a key game at No. 22 Texas on Friday.

“The next six days are going to challenge everything we’re about,” Campbell said. “This is a hard, tough sport. So getting a short week isn’t easy.”

The Wildcats, who came into the week with 12 active cases of COVID 19, were missing starting linebackers Justin Hughes and Elijah Sullivan for undisclosed reasons.

“We got hammered with COVID the last two weeks and we can’t worry about that,” Klieman said. “We have to move on from that. That’s just the reality.”

No. 17 Iowa State will have a chance to move up after such an impressive win.

Hall became one of four FBS players since 1996 to have 100 yards rushing and one rushing touchdown in each of his first eight games in a season. He joins TCU’s LaDainian Tomlinson in 2000, Iowa State’s Troy Davis in 1996 and Virginia’s Tiki Barber in 1996.

Hall also is now the first ISU player to run for 100 yards against every conference opponent.

Iowa State has held a conference opponent under 200 total yards four straight years. The Cyclones also did it against Kansas in 2017, West Virginia in 2018 and West Virginia in 2019.

HAYS - For the second time in three days the Fort Hays State men's basketball team came up on the short end of a two-point game. After losing to rival Washburn on a last second shot Thursday, the Tigers (0-2) lost 68-66 to Emporia State Saturday at Gross Coliseum when Kaleb Hammeke's long heave from just inside the mid-court stripe bounced off the backboard.

The game was tight throughout with 12 ties and 14 lead changes and neither team leading by more than four.

Jared Vitztum hit two free throws to put the Tigers up 58-54 with just over five minutes to play but the Hornets (2-0) got a key offensive rebound following a missed free throw with 434 seconds left then eventaully hit a pair of foul shots with 23 seconds to play and held off the Tigers the rest of the way.

Vitztum led all scoring with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Alvin Thompson added 11 pionts.

The Hornets were led by guards Austin Downing and Jumah'Ri Turner. Downing hit a couple of free throws with 11 seconds left to push the Hornet lead to three and scored 19. Turner added 18 points and Mason Thiessen added 11.

The Tigers are now off for two weeks before traveling to Kearney to play the Lopers on December 5.
