KEARNEY, Neb. - The Fort Hays State women's basketball game at Nebraska-Kearney this Saturday has been postponed due to COVID-19 protocols and will me made up at a later date to be announced.

The men's game with the Lopers is still on as scheduled and set to begin at 4 pm. at the Health and Sports Center.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Kansas City Royals announced tonight that they will not tender a Major League contract to infielders&nbsp;Maikel Franco&nbsp;and&nbsp;Jeison Guzman, infielder/outfielder&nbsp;Erick Mejia&nbsp;and outfielder&nbsp;Bubba Starling. Left-handed pitcher&nbsp;Foster Griffin&nbsp;and right-handed pitcher&nbsp;Carlos Sanabria, who were designated for assignment earlier this week, will also not be tendered Major League contracts.

The Royals announced today that they did agree to terms with infielder/outfielder&nbsp;Hunter Dozier&nbsp;and outfielder/designated hitter&nbsp;Jorge Soler. Yesterday, the Royals announced that they agreed to terms with outfielder&nbsp;Franchy Cordero&nbsp;and right-handed pitchers&nbsp;Jesse Hahn&nbsp;and&nbsp;Jakob Junis.

Franco, 28, started in all 60 games in 2020 and recorded his highest batting average (.278), on-base percentage (.321) and slugging percentage (.457) since 2015 with Philadelphia. He tied for third in the American League with 16 doubles and led the Royals with 38 RBI, which put him on a pace for 103 RBI over a 162-game season.

Guzman, 22, spent most of the 2020 season at the Royals’ Alternate Training Site. He was recalled for three days in August, but did not appear in a game. Guzman was selected to the 40-man roster in November of 2019, after being named Lexington’s Player of the Year that season.

Mejia, 26, made the Royals’ Opening Day roster for the first time in 2020 and played in eight games, including stints from July 24-Aug. 6 and Sept. 16-23.

Starling, 28, made the Royals’ Opening Day roster for the first time in 2020 and played in 35 games. He had two stints on the Injured List from Aug. 5-14 and Sept. 23 through season’s end. Starling was the Royals’ first-round pick (5th&nbsp;overall) in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft.

Dozier, 29, missed the first 16 games of the 2020 season, but started in each of the Royals’ last 44 games and did not commit an error while playing at first base (24 games), right field (18) and left field (2). Despite not making his season debut until Aug. 9, Dozier led the club with 27 walks, which tied for fifth most in the American League from his first game through season’s end. He also ranked third among Royals with 29 runs scored.

Soler, 28, was limited to 43 games in 2020 due to two stints on the Injured List. ⚾ Royals agree to terms with Dozier and Soler; non-tender six players

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Kansas forward Jalen Wilson waited a whole year for a night like Tuesday.

His celebration came in almost total silence.

Wilson scored 21 of his career-high 23 points in the second half, made the first two 3-pointers of his career during the key stretch and posted his first double-double to help No. 7 Kansas get past No. 20 Kentucky 65-62 in the Champions Classic.

“My team needed me to step up even though I had a slow first half, and the second half turned out to be a really good half,” the redshirt freshman said. “I always practice those (3-point) shots. I have confidence in me, my team has confidence in me and it felt really good.”

And the Jayhawks (2-1) needed everything Wilson could muster in an ugly, disjointed game.

Wilson was 8 of 16 from the field — the only player on either team with a shooting percentage of 50% or better. He had a season-best 10 rebounds. Ochai Agbaji added 17 points for Kansas, and Christian Braun had eight points and 13 rebounds.

Kentucky (1-2) was led by Brandon Boston Jr. and Davion Mintz, who each scored 12. Mintz had a chance to tie it with five seconds to go but his 3-pointer was off the mark and Kansas grabbed the rebound.

“They’ve got to go through this, it’s all part of the growth of this,” Kentucky coach John Calipari said. “They punked us. We couldn’t even bring in the ball.”

What was supposed to be one of this season’s showcase games between college basketball’s two winningest programs devolved quickly into sloppy play, full of turnovers, missed shots and blown opportunities. With no fans or even cardboard cutouts, and the only noise being piped-in music during timeouts, the lack of intensity was palpable throughout the game.

“It didn’t have the feel at all of a game,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “It had the feel of a scrimmage.”

Kansas shot 30% from the field and missed three of four free throws during one stretch in the final minute when it could have sealed the win.

Kentucky shot 36% but blew an early double-digit lead and gave away a 35-29 halftime edge when the Jayhawks started the second half on a 10-3 run to grab a 39-38 lead with 12:46 left.

But the offensive woes prevented either team from taking control until Agbaji broke a 55-all tie with a rare 3-pointer at the 2:43 mark. His dunk on the next possession finally gave Kansas some breathing room and Kentucky never recovered.

Kentucky: After last weekend’s surprising home loss to Richmond, the Wildcats needed to get back on track. It looked as though they might for a half. But even a win Sunday against Georgia Tech in Atlanta might not be enough to keep them in the Top 25 after this game.

Kansas guard Marcus Garrett played 35 minutes despite feeling ill the last four days.

Self said Garrett was suffering from headaches, was bothered by bright lights, had an upset stomach and was struggling to catch his breath. While Self said Garrett was given PCR tests for COVID-19 on Friday and Tuesday and both came back negative, the coach didn’t expect Garrett to suit up and even explained he didn’t need to play.

HAYS - After having the start of their season delayed by over a week due to COVID, the Fort Hays State women's basketball team made their season opener a game to remember. The Tigers closed on a 16-4 run including ten unanswered over the final 5:21 and beat Washburn 75-69 Tuesday at Gross Coliseum.

Washburn (1-1) built their biggest lead at 65-59 with 7:52 to play but a three-point play by freshman Katie Wagner started the Tiger comeback.&nbsp;

Jaden Hobbs hit a three to pull the Tigers (1-0) within one at 69-68 with just under five minutes to play. The senior point guard was called for an offensive foul on the next possession and fouled out, playing only 17 minutes and scoring seven points.

Whitney Randall scored on a layup with 3:37 to play to put the Tigers ahead for good. The Alva, Oklahoma senior scored a career-high 26 points despite shooting 1-for-7 from 3-point range.

Randall scored on another layup and Cydney Bergmann hit three of four free throws to finish off the comeback.

Maize South freshman Katie Wagner scored 17 points and pulled down eight rebounds in her Tiger debut.

Plainville freshman Aubree Dewey and Idaho State transfer Nuria Barrientos led the Ichabods with 16 points each.

After being outrebounded in the first half, the Tigers control the boards in the second half and outscored Washburn 17-5 on second chance points after halftime.

The Tigers play their first road game Saturday at Nebraska-Kearney. The women's game tips at 2:00 pm with the men's to follow around 4:00 pm. You can hear them both on KJLS (103.3-FM).

The Cats improved to 1-2 with the victory, while the loss dropped Kansas City to 2-2 on the young season.&nbsp; The Cats opened the contest on a 17-0 run, as they hit their first three attempts from long range and forced Kansas City into 0-for-8 shooting and four turnovers in the opening eight minutes. The Roos were able to cut into the early deficit a bit, as Brandon McKissic and Marvin Nesbitt Jr. combined for 16 first half points to keep the visitors in it. The Cats took a 33-23 lead to halftime.&nbsp; The Roos kept things close in the second half, but K-State did damage at the free throw line to stay in front. TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes threw for 462 yards and three touchdowns to outplay Tom Brady and lead the Kansas City Chiefs to a 27-24 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.

Tyreek Hill scored on receptions of 75, 44 and 20 yards, backflipping into the end zone on his second TD, and finishing with 13 catches for 269 yards — the last an 8-yard catch on third-and-7 to give Mahomes an opportunity to run out the clock.

The Chiefs (10-1) won their sixth straight game and clinched their seventh 10-win season in eight years under coach Andy Reid.

The reigning Super Bowl champions improved to 6-0 on the road and have won nine straight away from home going back to last year.

Brady was 27 of 41 for 345 yards, three touchdowns and a pair of second-half interceptions in falling to 2-2 in four career meetings against Mahomes, who built an early 17-0 lead and also had the Chiefs up by 17 entering the fourth quarter.

The Bucs made it close, with Brady throwing TD passes of 31 and 7 yards to Mike Evans, the latter trimming Tampa Bay’s deficit to 27-24 with 4:10 remaining.

The Chiefs led 20-7 at halftime, with Hill having seven catches for 203 yards in the first quarter alone. The Bucs were fortunate they weren’t in a bigger hole at the break.

Kansas City ran 42 plays to Tampa Bay’s 22 in the first two quarters, outgaining the Bucs 377 yards to 131 with Mahomes throwing for 359 yards and Brady 117.

Three drives inside the Bucs 20, however, only netted a pair of short field goals. Shaquil Barrett sacked Mahomes, forcing a fumble that William Gholston recovered at the 14 with the Chiefs looking to build on a 17-0 lead.

Bashaud Breeland and Tyrann Mathieu had Kansas City’s interceptions off Brady. The Chiefs hurt themselves with a pair of roughing the passer penalties on the 10-play, 73-yard drive the six-time Super Bowl champion put together to close the gap to three points.

The Chiefs beat Tampa Bay for the first time since Sept. 5, 1993, when Joe Montana led Kansas City to a 27-3 victory. The Bucs had won five straight in a series the Chiefs lead 8-5.

Chiefs: WR Sammy Watkins returned after being sidelined since Week 5 with a hamstring injury. He had four receptions for 38 yards. ... LB Dorian O’Daniel suffered a right ankle injury in the first quarter and did not return.

Buccaneers: LG Ali Marpet returned to the lineup after missing three games because of a concussion. LT Donovan Smith was active after not practicing all week and being listed as questionable with an ankle injury suffered last week against the Los Angeles Rams.

DENVER (AP) — Taysom Hill’s two touchdown runs led the New Orleans Saints to a 31-3 win Sunday over the Denver Broncos, who were thrust into a quarterback quandry&nbsp;when their passers failed to wear masks as mandated by the NFL’s COVID-19 protocols.

In a grind-it-out slugfest like from pro football’s early days, the Saints (9-2) won their second straight game with Hill subbing for the injured Drew Brees. Hill wasn’t nearly as sharp as a week earlier against the Falcons, when he completed 18 of 23 passes for 233 yards and a 108.9 passer rating.

This time, he was 9 of 16 for 78 yards, no touchdowns, an interception and a paltry passer rating of 43.2. He also ran 10 times for 44 yards.

And that was much better than Broncos QB Kendall Hinton, a rookie receiver and former Wake Forest quarterback from their practice squad who made a shaky NFL debut by going 1 for 9 for 13 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions.

Tight end Noah Fant’s 13-yard catch was Denver’s only reception.

Sometimes, the Broncos had their running backs take direct snaps. But the Broncos converted just once in 10 third-down tries.

Starting quarterback Drew Lock, backup Brett Rypien and practice squad veteran Blake Bortles were disqualified over the weekend when the NFL discovered the three weren’t wearing masks Wednesday, the day before No. 3 QB Jeff Driskel tested positive for the coronavirus.

Hinton didn’t complete any of his seven first-half throws, one of which was picked off by Janoris Jenkins. The Broncos managed 37 yards and a single first down before halftime.

The Saints led 7-0 until scoring twice off turnovers in the final 2:22 of the first half.

Center Lloyd Cushenberry III’s low snap skittered past Lindsay and Kwon Alexander was headed for the end zone after scooping it up. Broncos left tackle Garett Bolles, who signed a four-year, $68 million extension Saturday, tripped him up at the 23.

Hill, who scored from 1 yard in the first quarter, added a 2-yard TD run to make it 14-0. Two plays later, Jenkins intercepted Hinton’s underthrown pass to DaeSean Hamilton, and that set up Wil Lutz’s 40-yard field goal as the clock expired.

The Broncos finally scored on Brandon McManus’ 58-yard field goal in the third quarter set up by rookie Essang Bassey’s 26-yard interception return. But the Saints responded with Latavius Murray’s 36-yard scamper that made it 24-3.

Murray, who rushed for 124 yards on 19 carries, made it 31-3 with a 7-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

The Broncos tried to persuade the NFL to delay the game to Monday or Tuesday night like the Ravens-Steelers game was pushed back from Thanksgiving after a virus outbreak on the Ravens. When that failed, they turned to Hilton, who played quarterback his first three seasons at Wake Forest before moving to receiver in 2019, when he caught 73 passes for 1,001 yards and four touchdowns.

He signed with Denver as an undrafted free agent and spent all of training camp with the Broncos before being waived on Sept. 5. He rejoined the practice squad on Nov. 4.

Hinton’s last touchdown pass came on Oct. 7, 2017, against Clemson, which is more recently than Hill, whose last TD throw was on Nov. 26, 2016, for BYU against Utah State.

🏈 Hill leads Saints to rout of QB-challenged Broncos

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Max Duggan threw three touchdown passes while running 58 yards for another score, TCU piled up 337 yards rushing in all, and the Horned Frogs bludgeoned their way to a 59-23 victory over winless Kansas on Saturday night.

Zach Evans ran for 100 yards on 12 carries, and Darwin Barlow added 83 yards rushing and a score, as the Horned Frogs (4-4, 4-4 Big 12) easily bounced back from a lopsided loss to West Virginia in which they failed to reach the end zone.

Duggan threw two TD passes to Pro Wells and another to Carter Ware, and Derius Davis returned a punt for a score, as coach Gary Patterson’s crew raced to a 38-12 halftime lead. They settled into a ground-and-pound approach from there, and a pick-six from C.J. Caesar II and fumble recovery for a score by Dee Winters put an exclamation mark on the win.

The Jayhawks (0-8, 0-7) tried errant and unsuccessful Jalon Daniels and Thomas MacVittie before giving Miles Kendrick a shot at quarterback. The third-stringer provided a spark, completing 11 of 18 passes for 166 yards with two TD passes to freshman Luke Grimm, who’d had just nine catches without a score all season.

Still, he hardly overcame a defense that allowed at least 52 points for the fourth straight game.

TCU set the tone by running seven straight times to start the game and finishing the drive with a field goal, then it forced Kansas into three straight three-and-outs that the Horned Frogs answered with three consecutive touchdowns.

On the first, Duggan dropped back on third-and-11 and hoisted a 46-yard pass to the 6-foot-4, 250-pound Wells, who walked backward into the end zone without a Jayhawk defender within 20 yards. On the second, Duggan tossed a 26-yard TD pass to the 6-4, 249-pound Ware, who didn’t have a defender within 30 yards of him.

Yes, the Jayhawks managed to lose a quarter-ton of tight ends on consecutive series.

Their problems boiled over after that, when a snap over Daniels’ head resulted in fourth-and-33 at their own 3-yard line. Kansas punter Reis Vernon, who had already shanked one kick, drilled a liner at Davis, who deftly weaved his way through the coverage for a 37-yard return that made it 24-0.

At that point, the Horned Frogs had 187 yards total offense. Kansas had minus-20.

The Jayhawks even had things go against them when they scored. Daniels threw a 48-yard touchdown pass to Kwame Lassiter II and they successfully kicked the extra point, but coach Les Miles took the point off the board and accepted an offsides penalty instead. Kansas proceeded to try the 2-point conversion and was stuffed.

The game was designated senior day for Kansas, but it carried a big asterisk. Seniors are eligible to return for another season because of the pandemic, and the Jayhawks still have a makeup game against Texas on Dec. 12 at Memorial Stadium. But with many family members — pretty much the only folks allowed in the stands because of the recent spike in cases — having already made travel plans, Kansas decided to go forward with its senior send-off.

TCU controlled the line of scrimmage, particularly on offense, where its entire corps of running backs were usually several yards downfield before meeting a defender. The Horned Frogs averaged 8.2 yards on 41 carries.

Kansas had not played since Nov. 7 due to byes and COVID-19 procedures, so the Jayhawks should have been prepared. But they were dominated at the line of scrimmage, dropped a handful of passes and blew countless defensive assignments.

TCU plays its final scheduled game against No. 23 Oklahoma State next Saturday. Kansas heads to Texas Tech.

Charlie Brewer completed 31 of 39 passes for 349 yards and two touchdowns. The senior quarterback completed four passes in a row for 45 yards after it initially appeared he had fumbled on a run on the first play.

Kansas State (4-5, 4-4 Big 12) has lost four in a row since starting 4-0 in conference play.

The final drive for Baylor (2-5, 2-5) began from its 31 with a 5-yard run by Brewer, but with Kansas State coming up with the ball after it popped out. A long replay review determined that Brewer’s knee was down before the fumble.

Brewer also ran for 56 yards and two scores, while he was sacked seven times to lose 23 yards. He had a 1-yard TD keeper with 4:16 left, before K-State went three-and-out and punted.

Kansas State quarterback Will Howard threw a touchdown and ran for another, fellow true freshman Deuce Vaughn rushed for 102 yards with a score.

Howard’s 24-yard TD run early in the fourth quarter put K-State up 24-15, a play after his 49-yard pass to wide-open tight end Briley Moore. Vaughn’s 38-yard TD run countered a Brewer TD pass to Trestan Ebner.

Brewer had an 7-yard TD on a draw play to end Baylor’s first drive, which was set up by the first of Howard’s two interceptions. After the botched extra point, K-State went ahead when receiver Malik Knowles took a handoff on a sweep and ran 75 yards for a score.

Kansas State: Howard became the starter after senior Skylar Thompson’s season-ending shoulder injury. The Wildcats haven’t won since Howard became the first K-State true freshman QB to win his first two starts. K-State can still finish with a winning conference record in each of coach Chris Klieman’s first two seasons with a win in its next game.

Baylor: After blowing two-touchdown leads in the second half of their previous two games, the Bears had talked about how to finish games. This turned out a little different than expected with 10 points in the final 4:16. This might have been their last chance to get another win this season, with No. 14 Oklahoma next before No. 17 Oklahoma State in the makeup of a home game postponed Oct. 17 when the Bears has COVID-19 issues.
