🏀 No. 5 Tiger women host Emporia State in MIAA semifinals Saturday

The TMP-Marian Monarchs got out to a quick start and held off the Phillipsburg Panthers on their way to a 69-50 win Friday in the 3A Norton sub-state semifinals.

Lucas Lang's first of two first quarter three pointers help the Monarchs 7-0 first quarter lead.

Phillipsburg was able to close the gap to two a couple of time in the first quarter but with TMP (19-4) leading 9-7 the Monarchs closed out the quarter on a 9-2 run to lead by 10 at 18-8.

In the second quarter Phillipsburg trimmed a 10-point deficit to six to open the quarter at 22-16.&nbsp;

TMP quickly extended the lead back to 10 before Phillipsburg to it to four on a 6-0 run at 26-22.&nbsp;

Following a Jackson Schulte three-pointer TMP would lead 29-22.

The Panthers were able to close within five before the Monarchs closed out the half with a 34-26 lead.

TMP outscored Phillipsburg 8-2 and then 8-5 to start the third quarter with a 50-33 lead.

Phillipsburg got it back to 10 midway through the quarter before the Monarchs built the lead back t0 14 at 54-40. TMP led 54-42 through three quarter.

The fourth quarter belonged to TMP. They opened the quarter on a 15-4 run on their way to the 69-50 win.

Dylan Werth scored 13 of his team-high 21 points in the second half. Jackson Schulte added 15 and Lucas Lang finished with 10 points.

TMP will take on Minneapolis in the sub-state title game Saturday after they knocked off Norton 53-50.

🏀TMP boys advance to sub-state finals with win over Phillipsburg

LAWRENCE (AP)—Kansas placed coach Les Miles on administrative leave Friday night, hours after a report released by LSU revealed school officials there considered firing him in 2013 because of his behavior with female student workers.

“Even though the allegations against him occurred at LSU, we take these matters very seriously at KU,” Kansas athletic director Jeff Long said in a statement. “Now that we have access to this information, we will take the coming days to fully review the material and to see if any additional information is available. I do not want to speculate on a timeline for our review because it is imperative we do our due diligence.”

Miles is entering his third year as Kansas coach, and coming off a winless 2020 season. He was coach at LSU for 11-plus years before being fired four games into the 2016 season.

The 67-year-old Miles has denied allegations he made sexual advances toward students and has said he merely sought to serve as a mentor for students who expressed an interest in pursuing careers in sports.

Earlier in the day, LSU released a law firm’s 148-page review of how the university has handled sexual misconduct complaints.

Then-athletic director Joe Alleva’s 2013 recommendation to former LSU President F. King Alexander to fire Miles is detailed in the report by the Husch Blackwell law firm. The report offers a scathing view of the resources and attention LSU has dedicated to complaints of sexual misconduct and violence against women campus-wide.

LSU suspended executive deputy athletic director Verge Ausberry 30 days and senior associate athletic director Miriam Segar 21 days. Both are suspended without pay and ordered to undergo sexual violence training.

Miles was investigated after two female student workers in LSU’s football program accused the coach of inappropriate behavior.

While that 2013 investigation by the Taylor Porter law firm found Miles showed poor judgment, it did not find violations of law or that he had a sexual relationship with any students. Taylor Porter also concluded it could not confirm one student’s allegation that Miles kissed her while they were in the coach’s car with no one else present.

Alleva recommended Miles be fired with cause. In an email dated June 2013, Alleva wrote Miles was guilty of “insubordination, inappropriate behavior, putting the university, athletic dept (cq) and football program at great risk.”

The Taylor Porter review had been kept confidential for about eight years until a redacted version of it was released this week after a lawsuit filed by USA Today.

Miles was hired by LSU in 2005 and won a national title in 2007.

The Husch Blackwell report, which revisits the Miles investigation, also describes how the former coach “tried to sexualize the staff of student workers in the football program by, for instance, allegedly demanding that he wanted blondes with big breasts, and ‘pretty girls.’”

Meanwhile, LSU has not fired any current employees whose conduct was criticized in the Husch Blackwell report.

Interim President Tom Galligan said during an LSU Board of Supervisors meeting Friday in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, that he sought to be fair in issuing discipline. Galligan stressed that the independent report concluded that failures in responding to sexual misconduct complaints at LSU stemmed largely from ambiguous policies and a lack of resources for “overburdened” employees tasked with handling such matters.

“People will be unhappy either way,” Galligan said of how the university chooses to discipline employees involved in the scandal.

Galligan then read an excerpt from the report stating that such employees “were not served well by the leadership of the university.”

Attorney Scott Schneider, who led the Husch Blackwell review, said that while LSU does not have a monopoly on mishandling sexual misconduct cases, the university “has been very slow to develop policies and infrastructure and personnel that was really required” to ensure compliance with federal Title IX laws. Those laws deal broadly with gender equity in education and also apply to instances of sexual violence or harassment at educational institutions.

Schneider found that LSU leadership “responded in a lackluster fashion” when officials who handled Title IX compliance requested more resources.

“The university’s Title IX office was never staffed appropriately,” he said. “We’re not the first people to note that and flag this issue to the leadership of the university. It has been repeatedly addressed to the leadership of the university and seemingly nothing has been done to remedy it up until this point.”

The report said allegations against LSU athletes were treated no differently than those against non-athletes. However, Schneider noted that star athletes tend to have inherent leverage over victims at schools where athletics are highly valued.

Guice played for current football coach Ed Orgeron, but Schneider cautioned against blaming coaches for institutional failures in the handling of sexual misconduct complaints. Schneider’s recommendation is that only Title IX officials with expertise in such matters should handle such investigations and resulting discipline, while coaches should focus on coaching.

“You don’t want the coaches involved,” Schneider said. “What we want is athletics to be out of it entirely and allow the Title IX office to do its investigation.”

The meeting opened with a statement from former LSU student Caroline Schroeder, who informed the university that she was sexually assaulted by a fraternity member in 2016 and has described meeting official resistance as she sought to pursue her complaint.

“I’d like to express how little faith I have in this board to do the right thing today or in the months to come,” she said. “I genuinely hope that I’ve effectively insulted at least a few of you right now, because that insignificant and fleeting feeling that you’re experiencing in this particular moment is absolutely nothing in comparison to the persistent and often debilitating fear that survivors at LSU suffer on a daily basis as a direct result of your deliberate indifference to abuse on this campus.”

LAWRENCE (AP)—Kansas placed coach Les Miles on administrative leave Friday night, hours after a report released by LSU revealed school officials there considered firing him in 2013 because of his behavior with female student workers.“Even though the allegations against him occurred at LSU, we take these matters very seriously at KU,” Kansas athletic director Jeff Long said in a statement. “Now that we have access to this information, we will take the coming days to fully review the material and to see if any additional information is available. I do not want to speculate on a timeline for our review because it is imperative we do our due diligence.”Miles is entering his third year as Kansas coach, and coming off a winless 2020 season. He was coach at LSU for 11-plus years before being fired four games into the 2016 season.The 67-year-old Miles has denied allegations he made sexual advances toward students and has said he merely sought to serve as a mentor for students who expressed an interest in pursuing careers in sports.Earlier in the day, LSU released a law firm’s 148-page review of how the university has handled sexual misconduct complaints.Then-athletic director Joe Alleva’s 2013 recommendation to former LSU President F. King Alexander to fire Miles is detailed in the report by the Husch Blackwell law firm. The report offers a scathing view of the resources and attention LSU has dedicated to complaints of sexual misconduct and violence against women campus-wide.LSU suspended executive deputy athletic director Verge Ausberry 30 days and senior associate athletic director Miriam Segar 21 days. Both are suspended without pay and ordered to undergo sexual violence training.Miles was investigated after two female student workers in LSU’s football program accused the coach of inappropriate behavior.While that 2013 investigation by the Taylor Porter law firm found Miles showed poor judgment, it did not find violations of law or that he had a sexual relationship with any students. Taylor Porter also concluded it could not confirm one student’s allegation that Miles kissed her while they were in the coach’s car with no one else present.Alleva recommended Miles be fired with cause. In an email dated June 2013, Alleva wrote Miles was guilty of “insubordination, inappropriate behavior, putting the university, athletic dept (cq) and football program at great risk.”The Taylor Porter review had been kept confidential for about eight years until a redacted version of it was released this week after a lawsuit filed by USA Today.Miles was hired by LSU in 2005 and won a national title in 2007.The Husch Blackwell report, which revisits the Miles investigation, also describes how the former coach “tried to sexualize the staff of student workers in the football program by, for instance, allegedly demanding that he wanted blondes with big breasts, and ‘pretty girls.’”Meanwhile, LSU has not fired any current employees whose conduct was criticized in the Husch Blackwell report.Interim President Tom Galligan said during an LSU Board of Supervisors meeting Friday in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, that he sought to be fair in issuing discipline. Great Bend High School basketball coach Tim Brooks announced his retirement March 5.

Spending the past five years as the Great Bend High School boys basketball coach, Tim Brooks officially announced his retirement March 5.

Brooks posted a 38-59 record in his time as the Panther head coach including a 4-15 record this past season. Brooks' career coaching record is 165-173.

Brooks best season was last year (2019-2020) when the Panthers finished with a record of 17-5, won the Bluestem Classic in El Dorado and shared the Western Athletic Conference title with Hays. The Panthers lost to Hays in the Sub-State Championship game at the Panther Fieldhouse. Brooks came to Great Bend after a year leading Cimarron High School. Prior to his time with the Bluejays, Brooks spent 10 years as the coach at Manhattan High School where he posted a 115-92 record and led the Indians to the state tournament twice. Brooks started his coaching career as an assistant at Montezuma High School in 1987 and then spent 16 years as an assistant to Dennis Hamilton at Dodge City High School. Brooks replaced Chris Battin as Great Bend’s coach following Battin’s resignation in 2016.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The TMP Lady Monarchs rallied from down two in the closing minutes of the fourth quarter+ Thursday on their way to a 48-46 win over the Goodland Cowgirls in 34A
Norton sub-state semifinals.

With the Monarchs trailing 5-4 to open the game TMP’s
Kyleigh Allen scored back-to-back field goals giving TMP an 8-5 lead. &nbsp;They led at the end of the first quarter 8-7.

Just like in the first quarter, TMP’s Emilee Lane scored four
straight sparking a 10-2 run to put the Monarchs up 18-9. The Monarchs briefly led
by nine before Goodland closed the gap to four at 22-18 lead late in the second
quarter.

TMP’s Sophia Balthazor and Jaci VonLintel answered with
back-to-back three pointers to close out the first half with the Monarchs lead
by 10 at 28-18.

Goodland opened the second half on a 9-0 run to close within
one before VonLintel scored seven straight for TMP to give the Monarchs a 35-27
lead. They led 37-31 through three quarters.

In the fourth quarter Goodland outscored TMP 10-2 to take a
41-39 lead.

With just under four minutes to play Allen converted on a
pair of free throws to tie the game at 41. She added two more free throws on the next possession to
break the tied and put TMP up for good at 43-41.

With TMP leading 48-46 Goodland missed a jump shot at the buzzer
that would have sent the game to overtime as TMP secured the 48-46 win.

Kyleigh Allen scored a game-high 15 points and Jaci
VonLintel added 12 points.

The Monarchs will take on No. 2 Phillipsburg after they beat Norton 49-36.

The championship game is set for Saturday at 2 p.m. in Norton.&nbsp;

🏀TMP holds off Goodland to advance to sub-state finals

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — There’s a reason UTEP had never been invited by Kansas to play at Allen Fieldhouse.

The Miners probably won’t get invited again, either.

It took a frantic rally from a 15-point second-half hole, a driving go-ahead layup from Marcus Garrett with 22.4 seconds left and some poised foul shooting from Dajuan Harris for the No. 13 Jayhawks to squeak out a 67-62 victory Thursday night in a game added late to the schedule to prevent a long layoff before each school’s conference tournament.

“We played a good team tonight,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “We weren’t very good for 30 minutes, at all. We played a team that was better than us. But we played 10 really good minutes, so I’m leaving here feeling pretty good.”

David McCormack scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half, and Ochai Agbaji had 19 points as the Jayhawks (19-8) avoided a rare second loss in Allen Fieldhouse this season in what was supposed to be a Big 12 tourney tune-up.

Instead, the Miners (12-11) nearly beat Kansas for the fourth time in five meetings, which includes their double-overtime NCAA Tournament win on the way to the 1966 national title — the historic game made famous by the film “Glory Road” — and a second-round NCAA tourney upset of the top-seeded Jayhawks in 1992.

“This was the largest crowd we’ve played in front of all year,” UTEP coach Rodney Terry said, “and I thought our guys did a good job for the better part of three quarters of the game keeping the crowd out of it. This building, it’s one where the fans appreciate good basketball, and I thought we did a good job working the game.”

Souley Boum’s free throws for UTEP knotted the game at 62 with 1:30 left, and the teams traded empty possessions before Garrett drove the right side of the lane for a layup. Boum raced the other way but lost control of the ball out of bounds, and UTEP was forced to foul the seldom-used Harris, who made good on his free throws to seal the win.

Bryson Williams led UTEP with 23 points and 13 rebounds. Boum finished with 16 points and six boards.

“I don’t make a lot of complaints about the officiating,” Terry said, “but we should have been at the foul line 12 minutes into the game. They’re a good defensive team. They do a great job of guarding. But if you can just climb into a guy and hold them the whole way, that’s really hard to play against.”

The Big 12 had built in time at the end of the season to allow for makeup games caused by COVID-19, but the Jayhawks somehow managed to play all 18 of their conference games on time. So rather than a long layoff before the Big 12 tourney, the Jayhawks called up UTEP, which was facing a similar predicament in Conference USA.

They probably wish they left the phone on the hook.

Kansas missed 12 of its first 14 shots, at one point going 6 1/2 minutes without a field goal, and allowed the Miners to race to a 20-12 lead. Self burned through timeouts trying to slow their momentum, but Williams and Boum kept answering with buckets, and UTEP wound up carrying a 34-20 lead into the break.

It was the second-fewest points scored by the Jayhawks in a half this season.

The Miners, who stretched the lead to 15, were still clinging to a 50-36 advantage with 12:20. That’s when the Jayhawks turned up the defensive pressure to ignite a comeback. Garrett did most of the damage, slicing to the basket and drawing fouls, and soon their deficit had been trimmed to 50-44 with 9:26 remaining.

The rest of it evaporated when McCormack answered three straight UTEP turnovers with three straight baskets, and the big man converted a three-point play a few minutes later to give Kansas its first lead at 62-60 with 2:41 left.

The Jayhawks held on the final couple minutes to avoid the regular season-ending upset.

“It was just a lot of highs and lows in that game,” McCormack said, “down 15, there was a period where we had a nice rhythm going, a nice stretch, we lost it a little bit but got it right back. We finally just locked in mentally.”

Rather than attempt to sell tickets to the late addition to the schedule, Kansas gave away about 1,300 to front-line workers in the Lawrence area. That’s the majority of the roughly 2,000 fans the Jayhawks allow per game.

UTEP won the rebounding battle but was done in by second-half turnovers. The Miners had just four in the first half but had 10 in the second, and the Jayhawks turned them into 16 points during their frantic comeback.

Kansas made the free throws that mattered in the closing minutes — and not many more. The Jayhawks were just 16 of 26 from the foul line, continuing what has been a season-long issue for them.

UTEP begins the Conference USA Tournament in Frisco, Texas, while Kansas heads to the Big 12 Tournament in Kansas City, Missouri. Both will find out this weekend their seedings and opening matchups for next week.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Kansas City Royals today announced that for the first time in 18 months fans will once again be welcomed back into Kauffman Stadium beginning on Thursday, April 1, when the Royals host the Texas Rangers at 3:10 p.m. to open the 2021 regular season. The initial plan calls for pod-style seating to accommodate 10,000 fans per game, with goals to expand the capacity monthly, as the season progresses, and it is safe to do so.

With this announcement, 2021 will give Chairman/CEO John Sherman and his distinguished group of local owners the first opportunity to welcome Royals fans into ‘The K’ since taking ownership of the ball club in November of 2019.

“I can’t wait to welcome our fans back to Kauffman Stadium for Opening Day”, said John Sherman, Chairman and CEO of the Royals.&nbsp; “I am grateful for all of the support our fans and partners extended to us during these remarkable times.&nbsp; Our ownership group is excited about this 2021 Royals team.&nbsp; We look forward to a great summer watching the Royals compete on behalf of this great community.”

Kauffman Stadium will look different at the outset, as the Royals have been working in concert for months with Kansas City health officials and the Jackson County Sports Authority to ensure fan safety. New protocols and guidelines include beginning the season with a seating capacity of approximately 30%, comprised of socially distanced seating pods. Season ticket members will have priority access beginning the week of March 8th&nbsp;to select their seats for the 13 scheduled home games in April. While season ticket members will have the priority access, the general public will have the option to purchase single-game tickets on March 24th. Future home game on-sale dates to be announced subsequent to Opening Day.

“2020 presented so many challenges, not the least of which was getting baseball back on the field, if even for just 60 games,” said Royals manager Mike Matheny. “Among those challenges was playing the game we all love without having any fans in attendance throughout the entire regular season. HAYS - The fifth-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team jumped out to an early 9-2 lead and never trailed in a 71-44 victory over Missouri Southern State in the MIAA Tournament quarterfinals Wednesday at Gross Coliseum.

The top-seeded Tigers (21-2) will now host the semifinals and finals Saturday and Sunday. FHSU will play Emporia State at 2:00 pm Saturday. The fourth-seeded Hornets rallied in the second half to beat Central Oklahoma 82-80. Nebraska-Kearney and Washburn will play in Saturday's second semifinal. The third-seeded Lopers defeated Pittsburg State 66-50. The seventh-seeded Ichabods upset the second-seeded Central Missouri Jennies 63-55 in Warrensburg.

Whitney Randall scored the Tigers first seven points. She surpassed 1,000 career points on a fast break layup on the Tigers second possession. Randall is the 22nd Tiger to eclipse 1,000 points and the seventh to do so under head coach Tony Hobson. FHSU has had a player reach 1,000 career points in each of the last three seasons.&nbsp;

The Tigers held MSSU (9-14) to 28-percent shooting and 3-for-21 from beyond the arc. FHSU scored 28 points off the Lions 22 turnovers. They also outscored MSSU 18-9 on second chance points.

Hollenbeck led the Tigers with a career-high 20 points. Randall added 16, Katie Wagner 11 and Madison Mittie 10.

Jaden Hobbs only scored three points but dished out seven assists with four steals a blocked shot an no turnovers.

Amaya Jones led the Lions with nine points.

Hays High scored the first 11 points of the game and led wire to wire Wednesday evening. Great Bend managed just two points in the first quarter on one of 10 shooting. The Indians made seven of 10 shots and led 17-2.

Great Bend had two chances to make the score a single digit difference in the second quarter but could take advantage trailing 23-12. Carson Kieffer hit a three to beat the second quarter buzzer and in the process gave Hays a 27-14 lead at halftime.

Jace Linenberger converted a three point play to open the second half helping lift Hays to an eventual 20-point lead at 35-15. Great Bend gave the Indians one last run. The Panthers hit three consecutive three pointers and had the ball down 35-24 but turned the ball over and Hays took a 40-24 lead to the fourth quarter.

INDIANAPOLIS - The Fort Hays State women's basketball team is ranked first in the final release of the NCAA Division II Central Region Rankings, announced Wednesday (March 3) by the national office. Due to the disparity of games played this season and the limited data available, schools were listed as "under consideration" for the first two sets of regional rankings before they were officially ranked for this third and final release. Fort Hays State was listed in all three sets of regional rankings. The MIAA had five teams listed amongst the top eight, while the Northern Sun had three teams listed in the top six. Central Missouri is behind the Tigers in second, while the NSIC regular season and tournament champions Minnesota Duluth occupy the No. 3 spot. Nebraska-Kearney is fourth, followed by St. Cloud State and Augustana from the NSIC. Emporia State and Central Oklahoma round out the top eight teams in the region. The Central Region will look a little different this year, including only teams from the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) and the Northern Sun (NSIC). The change was made when the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ncaa.org/about/resources/media-center/news/dii-affirms-plans-host-winter-championships">NCAA Division II Management Council and Presidents Council</a>&nbsp;approved adjusting regional alignments for the 2021 Division II men's and women's basketball championships to better balance the number of active teams in each regional while trying to maintain geographic proximity for the schools in the regional. Prior to the approval, three regionals had 15 or fewer active teams, while three others had 36 or more active teams. The one-year regions keep seven of the eight regions between 27-33 active teams. As a result, teams in the Great American Conference (GAC) will now compete in the South Central Region for this year only. The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ncaa.org/about/resources/media-center/news/division-ii-reduces-bracket-field-sizes-2021-winter-and-spring-championships">NCAA has also reduced field sizes at all Division II Championship events</a>&nbsp;for the 2020-21 season, with basketball moving from 64 to 48 teams. As a result, just six teams will compete in the Central Regional, including automatic bids to the winners of the MIAA Championship Tournament, presented by Citizens Bank &amp; Trust and the NSIC tournament in addition to four at-large selections. Instead of the top overall seed hosting the regional tournament, the six teams selected will&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ncaa.org/about/resources/media-center/news/ncaa-division-ii-announces-predetermined-men-s-and-women-s-basketball-regional-sites">compete at a predetermined site</a>, the UCM Multipurpose Building in Warrensburg, Mo., March 12-15. The No. 3-6 seeds will play an opening round game on Friday, March 12, with the winners playing the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds on Saturday, March 13. The Central Region championship game will follow on Monday, March 15. Fort Hays State leads the region in wins and has the top performance indicator in the region at 16.273. Vitztum is a first team selection, while Hammeke is the conference's Freshman of the Year and an honorable mention selection to the team. Vitztum went into the final game of the season averaging a double-double and finished the year at 18.1 points and 9.9 rebounds per game. Vitztum led NCAA Division II in double-doubles during the regular season with 12, one better than Anthony Pittman of West Virginia State. He led the MIAA in rebounds per game and led NCAA Division II in total rebounds with 218 in 22 games played. Vitztum scored in double figures 19 times and produced a career-high 32 points and 15 rebounds in an overtime win at Missouri Southern. He scored 20 or more points 11 times and pulled down 10 or more rebounds in 12 contests. Vitztum ranked seventh in the MIAA for scoring average during the regular season. Hammeke finished the season leading the Tigers in assists with 99, averaging 4.5 per game. He ranked sixth in the MIAA in helpers per game. He was also one of three Tigers to finish with a scoring average in double figures with 10.7 points per game. Hammeke tied for second on the team in rebounding, averaging 3.3 per game. Hammeke is the second Tiger to receive the MIAA Freshman of the Year award, joining&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=1500">Craig Nicholson</a>&nbsp;who received the honor in 2013. 🏀 Vitztum and Hammeke named to All-MIAA men’s basketball team

Missouri Southern (9-13, 9-13&nbsp;MIAA) at #5 Fort Hays State (20-2, 20-2&nbsp;MIAA) MIAA Championship Tournament, presented by Citizens Bank &amp; Trust Quarterfinals Wednesday,&nbsp;March 3, 2021 • 6&nbsp;p.m. Hays, Kan. • Gross Memorial Coliseum Radio: KJLS (103.3-FM) <a href="https://streamdb7web.securenetsystems.net/cirrusencore/index.cfm?stationCallSign=KJLS">LISTEN LIVE</a> The fifth-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team opens postseason play on Wednesday when the Tigers host eighth-seeded Missouri Southern in the quarterfinal round of the 2021 MIAA Championship Tournament, presented by Citizens Bank &amp; Trust. First tip is set for 6 p.m. inside Gross Memorial Coliseum. Upper-level general admission&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/2011/6/27/GEN_0627111608.aspx?id=99">tickets are still available</a>&nbsp;for $10 for adults and $5 for youth K-12 and seniors. Seating is still limited to 25 percent capacity and fans are required to maintain FHSU health and safety protocols. FHSU students will get in free when they present a valid Tiger Card to the ticket booth at gate 2. Fans wishing to watch from home can do so on&nbsp;<a href="https://themiaanetwork.com/fhsutigers/">The MIAA Network</a>. MIAA Championship passes are available for $25 and will be valid for all games in both the men's and women's tournaments. Fans that purchased season-long access to the network will automatically have access to all tournament games. The Tigers wrapped up the regular season with a 20-2 record, reaching the 20-win plateau for the 10th season in a row and the 18th time in program history. Fort Hays State was the only school in Division II to reach 20 wins during the regular season. With the entire season consisting of 22 conference contests, that mark also tied the MIAA record for league victories in a single season (MWSU, 2015-16). Fort Hays State is 14-10 all-time in the MIAA Championship Tournament, including a 3-0 record against Missouri Southern. The Tigers have played three MIAA tournament games in Hays in the past, all coming in the first round when 12 teams advanced to the tournament. FHSU won all three of those games. The Tigers are 7-4 all-time in the quarterfinal round and 5-1 all-time as the top overall seed. This is the first time FHSU has played a No. 8 seed in the MIAA tournament. In addition to finishing on top of the MIAA standings for the third time, Fort Hays State led the league in five statistical categories, including assist/turnover ratio at 1.40, total assists with 361, assists per game at 16.4, field goal percentage at 44.3 and scoring margin at +14.4. The Tigers rank fifth nationally in both assist/turnover ratio and assists. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5850">Whitney Randall</a>&nbsp;led the Tigers in scoring during the regular season, averaging 16.0 points per night, good for seventh in the MIAA and among the top 100 in Division II. Her 130 made field goals rank 21st in the country. She scored in double figures in all but two games this season. The Alva, Okla. native has scored 996 points in her Tiger career, just four away from becoming the 22nd Tiger to ever reach 1,000 career points. It would be the third consecutive season a Tiger reached that milestone after&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5434">Kacey Kennett</a>&nbsp;in 2019-20 and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4045">Tatyana Legette</a>&nbsp;in 2018-19. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5847">Jaden Hobbs</a>&nbsp;leads the conference and is among the leaders in the country in assists, dishing out an average of 6.0 assists every game, 11th-most in Division II. She is on pace to break the school record in average assists (5.4). She ranks third in the country in both total assists (133) and assist/turnover ratio (3.33). The senior guard is second on the team in scoring, putting up 14.6 points per game. She also ranks second nationally in 3-pointers made, drilling 59 during the regular season, an average of 2.7 per game. She went over 1,000 points for her collegiate career in the regular season finale at Northwest Missouri State and needs just one point to eclipse 700 points in two seasons as a Tiger. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5849">Madison Mittie</a>&nbsp;has played a huge role for the Tigers, serving as one of the first players off the bench for much of the season before stepping into the starting lineup down the stretch. The Tigers are undefeated with Mittie in the starting lineup this season. The senior averages 4.5 points, 3.2 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.1 3-pointers per night. Freshmen have played a crucial role for the Tigers all year long, playing 43.2 percent of the minutes (1899:28) and scoring 42.3 percent of the points for FHSU (30.7 ppg).&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5854">Olivia Hollenbeck</a>&nbsp;scores 9.0 points per game while adding 1.9 blocks per game, fourth-most in the MIAA.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5858">Katie Wagner</a>&nbsp;contributes 8.6 points and a team-high 6.4 rebounds per game in addition to 2.1 assists each night, second best behind Hobbs.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5856">Jessie Sallach</a>&nbsp;averages 6.0 points per night, including scoring in double figures in each of the last three games of the regular season. Fort Hays State ended the regular season on a 15-game winning streak, tied for the fourth-longest streak in program history. The Tigers are 35-18 all-time against Missouri Southern, including a dominant 23-4 edge in games played in Hays. Fort Hays State has not lost at home to the Lions since 2011, winning each of the last eight home games in the series. The Tigers have won six in a row overall and 11 of the last 12. Fort Hays State 16-6 against the Lions under Hobson, including a 10-1 record at home. These teams have met three times in the MIAA Championship Tournament, with the Tigers coming away victorious each time. One of those games was played inside Gross Memorial Coliseum, an 83-46 Tiger victory in the opening round of the 2017 MIAA tournament. Missouri Southern finished the regular season 9-13 after winning its final two games to get into the postseason tournament. They rank eighth in the league in scoring offense (63.4 ppg) and 11th in scoring defense (68.1 ppg). The Lions are last in the league in turnover margin at -2.77 while they rank second in the league with 4.14 blocks each game. Madi Stokes is the only player in the MIAA averaging a double-double, scoring 10.5 points alongside 10.7 rebounds each night. Carley Turnbull leads the team with an average of 13.7 points per contest while Biance Stocks dishes out a team-best 2.2 assists each game. If the Tigers were to win Wednesday, FHSU would then host the semifinal and championship rounds of the MIAA Championship Tournament on Saturday and Sunday (March 6-7), respectively. First tip is set for 6 p.m. inside Gross Memorial Coliseum. Upper-level general admission&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/2011/6/27/GEN_0627111608.aspx?id=99">tickets are still available</a>&nbsp;for $10 for adults and $5 for youth K-12 and seniors. Seating is still limited to 25 percent capacity and fans are required to maintain FHSU health and safety protocols. FHSU students will get in free when they present a valid Tiger Card to the ticket booth at gate 2. Fans wishing to watch from home can do so on&nbsp;<a href="https://themiaanetwork.com/fhsutigers/">The MIAA Network</a>. MIAA Championship passes are available for $25 and will be valid for all games in both the men's and women's tournaments. Fans that purchased season-long access to the network will automatically have access to all tournament games. The Tigers wrapped up the regular season with a 20-2 record, reaching the 20-win plateau for the 10th season in a row and the 18th time in program history. Fort Hays State was the only school in Division II to reach 20 wins during the regular season. With the entire season consisting of 22 conference contests, that mark also tied the MIAA record for league victories in a single season (MWSU, 2015-16). Fort Hays State is 14-10 all-time in the MIAA Championship Tournament, including a 3-0 record against Missouri Southern. The Tigers have played three MIAA tournament games in Hays in the past, all coming in the first round when 12 teams advanced to the tournament. FHSU won all three of those games. The Tigers are 7-4 all-time in the quarterfinal round and 5-1 all-time as the top overall seed. This is the first time FHSU has played a No. 8 seed in the MIAA tournament. In addition to finishing on top of the MIAA standings for the third time, Fort Hays State led the league in five statistical categories, including assist/turnover ratio at 1.40, total assists with 361, assists per game at 16.4, field goal percentage at 44.3 and scoring margin at +14.4. The Tigers rank fifth nationally in both assist/turnover ratio and assists. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5850">Whitney Randall</a>&nbsp;led the Tigers in scoring during the regular season, averaging 16.0 points per night, good for seventh in the MIAA and among the top 100 in Division II. Her 130 made field goals rank 21st in the country. She scored in double figures in all but two games this season. The Alva, Okla. native has scored 996 points in her Tiger career, just four away from becoming the 22nd Tiger to ever reach 1,000 career points. It would be the third consecutive season a Tiger reached that milestone after&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5434">Kacey Kennett</a>&nbsp;in 2019-20 and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4045">Tatyana Legette</a>&nbsp;in 2018-19. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5847">Jaden Hobbs</a>&nbsp;leads the conference and is among the leaders in the country in assists, dishing out an average of 6.0 assists every game, 11th-most in Division II. She is on pace to break the school record in average assists (5.4). She ranks third in the country in both total assists (133) and assist/turnover ratio (3.33). The senior guard is second on the team in scoring, putting up 14.6 points per game. She also ranks second nationally in 3-pointers made, drilling 59 during the regular season, an average of 2.7 per game. She went over 1,000 points for her collegiate career in the regular season finale at Northwest Missouri State and needs just one point to eclipse 700 points in two seasons as a Tiger. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5849">Madison Mittie</a>&nbsp;has played a huge role for the Tigers, serving as one of the first players off the bench for much of the season before stepping into the starting lineup down the stretch. The Tigers are undefeated with Mittie in the starting lineup this season. The senior averages 4.5 points, 3.2 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.1 3-pointers per night. Freshmen have played a crucial role for the Tigers all year long, playing 43.2 percent of the minutes (1899:28) and scoring 42.3 percent of the points for FHSU (30.7 ppg).&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5854">Olivia Hollenbeck</a>&nbsp;scores 9.0 points per game while adding 1.9 blocks per game, fourth-most in the MIAA.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5858">Katie Wagner</a>&nbsp;contributes 8.6 points and a team-high 6.4 rebounds per game in addition to 2.1 assists each night, second best behind Hobbs.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5856">Jessie Sallach</a>&nbsp;averages 6.0 points per night, including scoring in double figures in each of the last three games of the regular season. Fort Hays State ended the regular season on a 15-game winning streak, tied for the fourth-longest streak in program history. The Tigers are 35-18 all-time against Missouri Southern, including a dominant 23-4 edge in games played in Hays. Fort Hays State has not lost at home to the Lions since 2011, winning each of the last eight home games in the series. The Tigers have won six in a row overall and 11 of the last 12. Fort Hays State 16-6 against the Lions under Hobson, including a 10-1 record at home. These teams have met three times in the MIAA Championship Tournament, with the Tigers coming away victorious each time. One of those games was played inside Gross Memorial Coliseum, an 83-46 Tiger victory in the opening round of the 2017 MIAA tournament. Missouri Southern finished the regular season 9-13 after winning its final two games to get into the postseason tournament. They rank eighth in the league in scoring offense (63.4 ppg) and 11th in scoring defense (68.1 ppg). The Lions are last in the league in turnover margin at -2.77 while they rank second in the league with 4.14 blocks each game. Madi Stokes is the only player in the MIAA averaging a double-double, scoring 10.5 points alongside 10.7 rebounds each night. Carley Turnbull leads the team with an average of 13.7 points per contest while Biance Stocks dishes out a team-best 2.2 assists each game. If the Tigers were to win Wednesday, FHSU would then host the semifinal and championship rounds of the MIAA Championship Tournament on Saturday and Sunday (March 6-7), respectively. 🏀 FHSU women earn six All-MIAA honors; Hobson Coach of the Year

HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs used runs of 12-0 and 12-1 in
the first half as they rolled to a 63-35 win over the Beloit Trojans in the
first round of the 3A Norton sub-state at Al Billinger Fieldhouse Tuesday in
Hays.

Trailing 3-2,. TMP’s Lucas Lang hit his first of six three
pointers in the game sparking a 12-0 run to put TMP (18-4) on top 14-3.

Both Lang and Dylan Werth scored eight of their game high 22-points in the first quarter as TMP led 18-9 after one quarter of action.

TMP was able to build their lead back to 11 twice to open the
second quarter but Beloit (5-13) answered with a 7-0 run cutting TMP’s lead to 23-19.

After a Gavin Unrein free throw Lang knocked down his second
three pointer of the second quarter as the Monarchs finished the first half on a 12-1
run to take a 35-20 lead into the halftime break.

Werth and Lang combined to 16 more points in the third quarter
as the Monarchs built a 30-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.

With a running clock in the fourth quarter TMP claimed the
63-35 victory.

Lucas Lang and Dylan Werth led all scorers with 22 points. The
22 points for Werth was a new career-high.&nbsp;

Kade Harris pulled a career-high eight rebounds for TMP.

The Monarchs will take on the Phillipsburg Panthers in Friday’s
sub-state semifinals in Norton.

🏀Monarchs roll past Beloit in sub-state opener

The Hays High Lady Indians traveled to Salina to play the #5 Central Lady Mustangs in the first round of Sub-State play Tuesday night. The two had met during the regular season in Hays with the ranked Mustangs picking up the victory.

An 8-0 early first quarter run provided the cushion that the Central Mustangs held for the first half. Trailing 10-1 the Indians had the ball seven times but scored just once closing the game down to 10-3.&nbsp;

Despite shooting just 14% in the first half the Indians never let up the defensive pressure holding the high-octane Mustangs to 25 first half points. Hays trailed at the mid-game break 25-14.

A Jersey Johnson three pointer in the third quarter pulled Hays within ten at 27-17 but the Indians never got any closer rest of the way. The Indians had several chances to pull the game down to a single figure affair but was outscored 25-12 over the final fourteen minutes.

The 52-29 loss ends the Indians' season with a record of 6-15. Salina Central will play in a ninth straight Sub-State championship game and is 17-4 on the year.

Twelve of the Indians twenty-one games this season came against opponents that were ranked at some point during the season.
