HAYS – After missing the MIAA Tournament for the first time
under head coach Mark Johnson, the Fort Hays State men’s basketball team has a
youth movement as they try to return to their former glory.

Four true-freshmen, two redshirt-freshmen and a
redshirt-sophomore were on the court Tuesday as the Tigers held their first
official practice for the 2020-21 season.

“We’re an awfully young team” said Mark Johnson, who begins his
20th season as the Tigers head coach. “One of the biggest things they’ve got to
figure out is how hard you have to play to win at the college level.”

The Tiger coaching staff is excited about the four true
freshmen which includes point guard Quinten Rock from Smoky Hill High School in
Aurora, Colo., Traejon Davis from Oklahoma City, Haggan Hilgendorf out of
Hastings, Neb. and Elijah Nnanabu who will redshirt this season.

“I think they’ve done a pretty good job of figuring things
out, the x’s and o’s of what we’re doing” Johnson added. “We’re still working
on the consistent effort, intensity, focus and physicality day after day. We’re
better today than we were in preseason but to continue to make strides in those
departments.”

The four true-freshmen are joined by redshirt freshmen Kaleb
Hammeke who was a two-time all-state selection at Hutchinson-Trinity Catholic
High School and Devin Walker from Ulysses who missed most of last season after
an injury in the preseason.

Gabe Pieschl redshirted last season after transferring to
FHSU following one season at Cloud County CC where he averaged 5.1 points and
2.1 rebounds as a freshman.

Senior Jared Vitztum will look to build off a solid junior
season in which he led the Tigers at 17.6 points and 7.9 rebounds per game and
was named to the All-MIAA Third Team. Vitztum reached double-figures in 22 of
their 28 games and shot 51-percent from 3-point range.

He’s joined by fellow seniors Alvin Thompson and Jackson Miller.
Thompson played in all but one game last season and averaged 6.0 points per
game off the bench in his first season after transferring from Cloud County CC.

Miller will be looking to play a bigger role after playing
in 17 games and averaging 1.8 points and 1.2 rebounds following two years at
Coffeyville CC.

Nyjee Wright is joined by junior college transfer Jordan Pumphrey
as the only juniors on the team.

Wright made starts in 27 of the Tigers 28 games last season
and was second on the team in scoring at 10.0 points per game and led the team
with 2.5 assists per game. The former Derby standout will miss the first
semester games as he recovers from off-season surgery.

Pumphrey averaged 18.4 points per game as a freshman and 16.0
as a sophomore at Cerro Cosa CC in California.

Gilbert Peters and Bjarni Jonsson round out the sophomore
class. Peters played in 25 games making one start as a redshirt freshman last
season. He averaged 3.8 points and 2.3 rebounds per game while Jonsson appeared
in 16 games.

The Tigers are scheduled to begin their season at home against Washburn on Wednesday, November 19.

Emporia State, Missouri Southern, Missouri Western, Newman, and Pittsburg State were all MIAA member institutions selected as an NCAA Division II Regional Championship site or a National Championship site. Emporia State was selected as the site of the 2024 and 2026 Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field National Championships. The national championship meet will be held at Welch Stadium and Zola Witten track, which hosted national championships in 1995, 1996, and 2006. Five MIAA members selected to host NCAA championships

LAWRENCE, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;Kansas Athletics announced today that due to the unique and difficult challenges COVID-19 has brought to the 2020-21 men’s basketball season, an agreement has been made to delay the upcoming six-game series vs. Missouri by one season. This year’s contest previously scheduled at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City for Dec. 12 will now take place during the 2026-27 season.

“When the NCAA moved the start of the basketball season from November 10th&nbsp;to November 25th, like everyone else, we went to work on creating a new schedule,” said Director of Athletics Jeff Long. “With the Big 12 conference games also being adjusted, and the likelihood of only 10-20% of fans permitted to attend the game due to the pandemic, it became clear that we should delay the series. We appreciate Missouri agreeing to the delay and we look forward to renewing the Border Showdown at Allen Fieldhouse on December 11, 2021 with a sellout crowd.”

Each school will host two of the first four Border Showdown games starting with Dec. 11, 2021, in Allen Fieldhouse. KU will also host MU in the 2023-24 season, while Missouri will host in 2022-23 and 2024-25. The final two rivalry meetings will be played at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Mo., during 2025-26 and 2026-27 seasons.

“I was excited about beginning this series with Missouri again on December 12th, however, it is in the best interest of both of our schools and especially our fans to push this back a year,” said Head Coach Bill Self. “This rivalry goes back a long way, and we want our fans to be able to witness it again in-person. So, delaying it a year was an easy decision.”

Until 2012, the Border Showdown was known as the longest continuous rivalry west of the Mississippi River.

🥎 FHSU holds Black and Gold intrasquad scrimmage

WICHITA - For a 15th-consecutive year, the Hays High girls' golf team is headed to the state tournament.

The Indians advanced with a second-place finish at Monday’s Class 5A regional at Rolling Hills Country Club in Wichita.

Hays High shot a 365 and finished 21 back of Kapaun Mt. Carmel who won the team title with a 344.

Katie Dinkel led the Indians with an 87 to finish eighth and was the only HHS golfer to medal.&nbsp;Taleia McCrae was 13th with a 92, Sophia Garrison was 14th with a 93, Sierra Smith was 17th with a 94 and Abbie Norris was 18th with a 95.

The Class 5A state tournament will be played at Salina Municipal Golf Course next Monday and Tuesday.

⛳ HHS girls qualify for state

COLBY - The TMP-Marian girls' golf team was short-handed for their 3-2-1A Regional at Colby's Meadow Lake Golf Course. The Monarchs had only three golfers able to play with the resto of the team in quarantine, and two of the three qualify for state.

Allison Applequist and Amelia Herrman both earned spots at state. Applequist finished ninth with a 98 and Herrman 17th with a 110.

Plainville's Corbyn Marquess shot a 92 and finished in second place, eight shots back of Colby's Anna Starbuck.

All three advance to the 3-2-1A State Tournament next Monday and Tuesday at Cherry Oaks Golf Course in Cheney.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs should have felt good about the state of their defense heading into Sunday’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders. They had held every opponent to 20 points or fewer and were getting back defensive tackle Chris Jones from an injury and cornerback Bashaud Breeland from a suspension.

They proceeded to give up 490 yards of total offense, allowed Derek Carr to throw three touchdowns passes — including a 72-yarder and a 59-yarder — and couldn’t stop the Raiders and force a punt in the final minutes of a 40-32 defeat.

The very simple question facing the Chiefs on Monday: What went wrong?

“We just didn’t finish the right way,” Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu said. “In the run game, even in the pass game, we didn’t finish how we normally would. Even when we get in certain zone coverages, we didn’t match them as well as we’ve done in the past. We’ll grow from it, we’ll learn from it, but hats off to them. They made the plays that counted.”

The Chiefs (4-1) had every opportunity to extend their franchise-record 13-game winning streak another week.

Despite allowing those three TD passes in the second quarter, the Chiefs were still tied 24-24 at halftime, and they managed to hold Las Vegas in check during a scoreless third quarter. But with their offense continuously misfiring, the defense finally gave up a pair of touchdown runs to Josh Jacobs and Daniel Carlson’s field goal over the final 15 minutes.

And when Patrick Mahomes led the Chiefs to a TD and 2-point conversion down the stretch, their defense allowed Jacobs to rumble for a first down and Carr to sneak for another to clinch the Raiders’ first win at Arrowhead Stadium since 2012.

“They had a heck of a game plan,” Jones said. “They came out with some formation we hadn’t seen on film and started to throw shots, especially out of the gun. They caught us off-guard a little bit. As a D-line, we harp on making sacks, affecting the quarterback, and we didn’t execute. We have to do a better job.”

The offense may have struggled in the third quarter, but it still showed how dynamic it can be in marching 75 yards in 1:29 for a fourth-quarter touchdown that gave them a chance. Eight players caught passes, Clyde Edwards-Helaire averaged a respectable 4 yards per carry and Mahomes still finished with 340 yards passing and two TDs.

Mahomes and the offense did all that despite a line that couldn’t stop the Las Vegas defensive front, even though the Raiders almost never rushed more than four. Mahomes has shredded defenses that have tried to blitz him into mistakes, but the Raiders got enough pressure out of their base defense that it took much of the pressure off their secondary.

The Chiefs made a concerted effort to get Tyreek Hill more involved in the game plan. He had three catches for 78 yards and three carries for 15 yards and a score. He also caught a 58-yard TD pass that was wiped out by a holding penalty and nearly had a 72-yard touchdown catch — a questionable no-call on pass interference caused him to drop it.

Everybody in the trenches had a rough day. The offensive line couldn’t handle the Las Vegas defensive front, and their Chiefs counterparts barely touched Carr all afternoon. The KC defensive line also couldn’t contain Jacobs and the Raiders’ other running backs in the fourth quarter, when the outcome was still hanging in the balance.

Guard Kelechi Osemele, who already was replacing the opted-out Laurence Duvernay-Tardif, will miss the rest of the season after tearing ligaments in his right knee. Middle linebacker Anthony Hitchens spent much of the game in and out of the lineup because of a hand injury, and wide receiver Sammy Watkins left with a hamstring injury.

K-State now has six Big 12 weekly honors this season as&nbsp;Skylar Thompson&nbsp;(offensive),&nbsp;Jahron McPherson&nbsp;(defensive) and&nbsp;Deuce Vaughn&nbsp;(newcomer) picked up accolades after the Oklahoma game, while Vaughn was also the newcomer of the week following the Texas Tech contest. K-State is the first program since 2016 to have three-straight Big 12 Newcomer of the Week honors.

Parker, a native of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, carded five tackles and had a 37-yard interception return touchdown in the third quarter, which proved to be the difference in the game. Parker’s pick six was the first of his career and the first by a Wildcat since Duke Shelley returned an interception 25 yards for a score at Texas Tech in 2017. Parker now has six career interceptions, which is tied for 14th&nbsp;nationally among active players.

Kansas State quarterback Skylar Thompson will miss the rest of the season after having surgery on his throwing shoulder, leaving freshman Will Howard to lead the No. 22 Wildcats the rest of the way.

Thompson was hurt two weeks ago when Texas Tech’s Rico Jeffers drove him into the ground after Thompson unloaded a pass in the Wildcats’ 31-21 victory. The Red Raiders were penalized 15 yards and Jeffers was ejected for the late hit.

“He had surgery last week on an upper-body injury, so unfortunately his season is over with,” Kansas State coach Chris Klieman said during the Big 12 teleconference on Monday. “But we are going to rally around Will Howard and Nick Ast.”

Thompson is a senior, but the NCAA has frozen eligibility clocks for the 2020 season because of the COVID-19 pandemic, which means he could return for one more season. It’s unclear whether that decision has been made.

Howard took over against Texas Tech for Thompson, who watched the rest of the game with his arm in a sling, and then made his first career start Saturday at TCU. Howard ripped off an 80-yard run in the first quarter to set up a field goal, and he finished with 117 yards passing and an interception and 86 yards rushing in the 21-14 victory.

“Brought a freshman quarterback into a tough environment and against a great defensive coach,” Klieman said. “I thought Will did a great job and managed the game exceptionally well and did enough for us to be successful.”

While the defense ultimately made the biggest plays in the game, including A.J. Parker’s interception return for a score, Howard and the offense avoided any major mistakes that could have given TCU a chance down the stretch.

The win kept the Wildcats (3-1, 3-0) in first place in the Big 12 heading into their week off. They play Kansas on Oct. 24.

“His composure in the huddle was what we expected,” Wildcats tight end Briley Moore said, “but to think about that after, I was talking to coach (Collin) Klein, a true freshman in his first start like that to have that composure to get settled in is an amazing thing and gives the team confidence that no matter what the situation we are going to have a chance.”

The oft-injured Thompson has been a steadying influence for Kansas State since his freshman season, and his decision to stick around after the retirement of Bill Snyder and the hiring of Klieman helped to ensure a relatively seamless transition.

He helped to lead the Wildcats from five wins in Snyder’s final season to eight wins and a bowl game last season, and has thrown for 5,012 yards and 30 touchdowns. He also has 1,083 yards and 22 touchdowns on the ground.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Vic Fangio doesn’t want to hear about how the Denver Broncos are getting suckered by the NFL after their game at New England was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/virus-outbreak-nfl-denver-broncos-tennessee-titans-new-england-patriots-2e5f98c82c19b9bf9516f13ef3b1ca41">postponed&nbsp;</a>for a second time Sunday following the Patriots’ fourth positive coronavirus test.

“Yeah, we compete like hell on Sundays to beat each other, but ultimately we’re all in this thing together,” Fangio said. “It doesn’t matter who’s at fault or who had the positive test. We all just have to deal with it.”

Fangio said he trusts the NFL’s handling of virus outbreaks in New England and Nashville because the league is working hand in hand with the players association on COVID-19 safety measures.

“In a weird way, I’m kind of happy to see some of this stuff happen because you see who the whiners are ... and who can’t handle adversity,” Fangio added during a memorable take on a videoconference call Sunday. “And I’m going to try hard that the Denver Broncos don’t fall into any of those categories.”

Fangio's phraseology has raised eyebrows before, such as last summer when the 61-year-old white head coach was criticized for being tone-deaf after suggesting discrimination and racism weren’t issues in the NFL. He later apologized, explaining he meant only to convey that such ills didn’t typically permeate NFL locker rooms or its playing fields.

On Sunday, Fangio didn’t call out anybody by name. But several of his players have taken to social media to register their complaints, first when the Patriots game was pushed back a day to Monday and again Sunday when it was postponed to next Sunday.

“This whole practice all bye week thing is not ideal for a non ota, injury at an all time high season” defensive end Shelby Harris&nbsp;tweeted Sunday, 72 hours after posting this take: “Why are we getting punished when we did nothing wrong. Pats go on a bye next week and we are stuck on a short week playing the Dolphins help it make sense.”

“Mann we ain’t even do anything” tweeted linebacker Bradley Chubb on Sunday, and running back&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Melvingordon25/status/1315282193334243329" target="_blank">Melvin Gordon</a>&nbsp;chimed in with, “Ain’t no way we practiced all week and they canceled our game.”

Fangio said he understood his players’ feelings.

“But my message to them and to anybody is we were inconvenienced by this, but it very easily could have been flipped around to where we had the positive tests and the Patriots were inconvenienced by it,” Fangio suggested.

“So, I’m happy that the positive tests weren’t in our building. But I’m under no illusion that at some point we might have a positive test or two and be the cause of a game getting moved down the road.”

The latest postponement of the Broncos’ game at New England (2-2) also forced the NFL to move Denver’s game against Miami from next weekend to Nov. 22. The Broncos (1-3) were supposed to host the Chargers that week, and that game was moved up to Nov. 1, which was originally Denver’s bye.

So, the Broncos will have had a 17-day break between games and won’t get another break all season. The Patriots wouldn’t be nearly as inconvenienced, simply having to flip-flop their bye week with their game against Denver.

After meeting with his team Sunday morning, Fangio dismissed his players until Wednesday, when he’ll also re-evaluate QB Drew Lock’s prospects of returning from a sprained right shoulder.

Despite these speed bumps, Fangio said he still has faith the NFL will play out the season and crown a champion during the pandemic like the NHL did and the NBA and MLB are doing.

“What makes it harder for us compared to baseball is we can’t go and play doubleheaders and we can’t make a nine-inning game and seven-inning game,” Fangio said. “But we’ll get through it.”

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Derek Carr could be forgiven for thinking he was due for another miserable day at Arrowhead Stadium.

The Raiders quarterback had never won in six tries in Kansas City, his quarterback rating so low in his personal house of horrors that he probably deserved to be benched. And when Carr threw an early interception Sunday that helped the Chiefs take a commanding lead, well, it seemed as if history was repeating itself.

“I’ve had a lot of sad walks up that ramp,” Carr said later, “but you know what? Not today.”

Instead, the oft-criticized quarterback steadied his shaky team, outplayed Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes and led the Raiders to a 40-32 victory. Carr finished with 347 yards and three touchdowns passing. Perhaps fittingly, he executed the quarterback sneak on fourth-and-1 that clinched the win.

“I think we’re back a little bit,” Carr said with a smile, “but we have to win football games against these guys to make it a rivalry. We haven’t done that in a long time. To make it a rivalry, we have to win games like this one.”

The game, tied 24-24 after three quarters, could have gone either way. But with the high-powered Kansas City offense sputtering, the Raiders got the go-ahead touchdown&nbsp;from Josh Jacobs, a field goal from Daniel Carlson and an interception of Mahomes on fourth down to set up Jacob's second TD and establish breathing room.

Mahomes quickly answered, hitting Travis Kelce for a TD and Darrel Williams for the 2-point try. But the Raiders (3-2) recovered a squib quick, Jacobs rumbled for a first down as the Chiefs (4-1) burned timeouts, and Carr sneaked for the crucial first down.

“It clicked to me in the locker room. I’m like, ‘Man, this is your first win,’” Jacobs said. “It feels good to see him, and see how good he played in this game, being a captain. He just controlled the game, made sure everybody stayed positive.”

Mahomes spent the entire game trying to escape the Las Vegas pass rush, which manhandled the Chiefs offensive line. He finished with 340 yards passing and two touchdowns along with an interception. Kelce had 108 yards receiving.

“You know, we just didn’t execute at a high enough level,” Mahomes said. “We weren’t running plays the right way and I wasn’t finding the right reads, and that carried over and we didn’t play the second half the way we wanted to.”

The first have ended in 24-24 after the teams combined for nearly 700 yards of offense.

The Chiefs got a touchdown pass from Mahomes to Sammy Watkins, who later left with a hamstring injury, but also had two TD passes brought back by penalties. The first was a 58-yarder to Hill wiped out by a holding call on Kelechi Osemele, who left with a knee injury two plays later. The second was a strike to Clyde Edwards-Helaire late in the half negated by Kelce’s offensive pass interference.

Meanwhile, Carr tossed yet another interception at Arrowhead Stadium, but this time he answered with three first-half touchdown passes: 59 yards to Nelson Agholor, who simply split the Chiefs secondary; tight end Darren Waller in the back of the end zone; and Henry Ruggs III, who hauled ina&nbsp; 72-yard throw&nbsp;for a 24-21 lead.

“They got behind us,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “I would say a couple of them were just beat, and then other ones, I’m not sure we were doing the right things. But that’s how these things go.”

The Chiefs tied it at halftime, and the game slowed down during a scoreless third quarter. The Chiefs had to punt on their first three possessions, gaining just two first downs, one on a penalty.

The Raiders pulled ahead on Jacobs’ bullish 7-yard run, then made it a two-possession game when Carr hit Hunter Renfrow for 42 yards on third-and-18 to set up Carlson’s 43-yard field goal. Jeff Heath’s pick of Mahomes on fourth down a few minutes later allowed Jacobs to score again.

“We did not want to give Mahomes another crack at it,” Raiders coach Jon Gruden said. “I marveled at a lot of the plays that Derek made, and I marveled at what Mahomes is able to do. A lot of his offense is unscripted — it’s completely creative, and a lot of it is drawn up by him. Thank God we don’t have to see them again for a few weeks.”

The Raiders placed DT Maurice Hurst on the COVID-19 list earlier this week, and the Chiefs reportedly had an assistant strength and conditioning coach test positive. But contact tracing was done within both organizations and there were no additional positive tests.

Las Vegas: FS Lamarcus Joyner hurt his hamstring on the opening play, Renfrow was shaken up returning a punt but remained in the game, and CB Keisean Nixon hurt his hip covering a punt early in the second half.

Kansas City: Along with injuries to Osemele and Watkins, LB Anthony Hitchens hurt his hand and was off the field in the fourth quarter, when the Chiefs were unable to stop the Las Vegas offense.

Chiefs: were supposed to visit the Bills on Thursday night but will instead play Oct. 19, giving Buffalo time to make up its game against Tennessee on Tuesday.

🏈 Carr helps Raiders snap Chiefs’ 13-game win streak

The NFL has postponed the Denver-New England game indefinitely due to another positive coronavirus test with the Patriots.

That game, originally scheduled for Sunday, had been moved to Monday night.

A person familiar with the situation says the Patriots have closed their facility again after the positive test result, while the Tennessee Titans announced they closed their facility Sunday morning after a staff member tested positive.

The latest result also endangers the Titans’ game with Buffalo (4-0) set for Tuesday night after it was moved from Sunday. Six games have been moved already as the league is in its fifth week of the schedule.

There were no other positive COVID-19 tests Sunday.

The NFL rescheduled New England’s game for a second straight week after reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year Stephon Gilmore tested positive. This latest positive result puts their outbreak at four, according to the person who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because neither team announced the latest results.

Broncos coach Vic Fangio, in a memorable take on the outbreaks in the league, noted on a Zoom call that what is occurring with the Titans and Patriots could happen to anyone.

“But my message to them and to anybody is we were inconvenienced by this,” he said, “but it very easily could have been flipped around to where we had the positive tests and the Patriots were inconvenienced by it. So, I’m happy that the positive tests weren’t in our building.

“But I’m under no illusion that at some point we might have a positive test or two and be the cause of a game getting moved down the road. So, we’re all in this together, the entire league is.

Fangio added that the NFL is considering several scenarios for when the Broncos will play New England.

The Titans last played Sept. 27 because of an outbreak that has now reached 24. They’ve already had a game with Pittsburgh first postponed, then rescheduled to Oct. 25. They sent out a statement saying they learned a staff member tested positive.

“We have temporarily closed our facility and are in communication with the league on the next steps,” the Titans said.

The Bears also had an issue, moving offensive lineman Badara Traore from their practice squad to the reserve/COVID-19 list on Saturday.

Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill addressed the uncertainty of the situation on Saturday.

“It was a roller coaster for sure,” he said. “Definitely the fact that we had guys with no symptoms testing positive and we had guys with full-blown symptoms getting consecutive negative tests on multiple days was really eye opening. Just the fact of we really don’t know.

“So, we have to treat everyone as if they have the virus. Unfortunately, really probably lost some faith in the testing system just through everything we’ve been through over the past week and a half. But we said that from the beginning that testing is not going to prevent the virus from being spread, it’s the way we handle ourselves with all the protocols and handle ourselves outside the building as well.”

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Kansas State got another non-offensive touchdown and a solid performance from a true freshman quarterback in his first start against one of the Big 12′s best defensive coaches.

That was enough for the Wildcats to improve to 3-0 in the Big 12 Conference.

AJ Parker returned an interception 37 yards for a touchdown and Will Howard accounted for 203 of K-State’s 289 total yards in a 21-14 win at TCU on Saturday.

“They pressured him quite a bit. I thought he did a really nice job getting us into some good checks” coach Chris Klieman said of Howard. “He’s going to learn and get better. You’re talking about a true freshman coming into TCU, and his first start is against a Gary Patterson-coached defense. It’s a pretty tall task, and I thought he did a great job.”

Howard was only the fourth true freshman quarterback to start a game for the Wildcats (3-1, 3-0 Big 12), and the first since Josh Freeman in 2006. He was 8-of-19 passing for 117 yards with an interception and 86 yards rushing, though 80 came on one carry.

“It was far from perfect. We got it done, we did what we came here to do. I’m excited about that,” Howard said. “It’s a lot better to learn from a win, than to learn from a loss, and there’s a lot of to learn from here.”

Senior quarterback Skylar Thompson didn’t even make the trip to Fort Worth, a week after getting injured in the first half against Texas Tech. Howard played the second half of that game while Thompson was on the sideline out of uniform and with his arm in a sling. Klieman would only say afterward that Thompson wasn’t available.

The interception return by Parker in the third quarter that made it 21-7 was the 119th non-offensive TD since 1999 for Kansas State. That is the most by any FBS team in that stretch — going into Saturday, Alabama and Virginia Tech were tied for the second-most with 108.

With a chance to seal the game on a third-and-1 keeper with just over a minute left, Howard tripped while by himself for no gain near midfield. Klieman never thought about going for it since his defense was playing so well, and the punt pinned the Horned Frogs (1-2, 1-2) at their own 4.

“You can laugh about it now that we won. It was a read play, I made the right read,” Howard said. “I couldn’t tell you what really happened. You know fatigued legs, and tripped up a little bit, which obviously can’t happen.”

TCU still had a chance to tie the game after the Wildcats were penalized for roughing the passer on a desperation pass by Max Duggan as time expired. The penalty put the ball at the K-State 39 for an untimed play, and Duggan’s heave into a crowd in the end zone was knocked to the ground.

Duggan was 19-of-31 passing for 154 yards, and also had a 3-yard TD run on fourth-and-goal with 3:39 left. Darwin Barlow, one of TCU’s freshmen running backs, had a 7-yard TD.

“I’m disappointed in the loss, not how some of the younger guys played,” TCU coach Gary Patterson said. “In a game where you don’t have many choices, you have to make plays when you’re supposed to make plays and you can’t give them anything and we gave them something. At the end of the day we have to do a better job on all accounts.”

Maize South had the top three runners in the girls’ race led
by senior Alexa Rios who finished first with a time of 18:47).

Sophomore Amelia Jaeger led three medalists for the HHS girls with an 11th
place finish (20:20). Freshman Arely Maldonado placed 14th (20:38) and freshman Brenlynn
Albers 17th (20:50). Sophomore Jaycine Watson did not medal but placed 22nd (21:12) and freshman Mika
