Following what amounted to a bye week in the middle of their season, Hays High played their postponed homecoming game by hosting Dodge City on Friday.

The Indians showed no rust scoring on the first play of the game. Dylan Dreiling took the ball over the right side for a 79 yard score that was followed by a two point conversion from 18 yards out by Jaren Kanak. The scoreboard read 8-0 just nineteen seconds into the game.

Dodge City failed to convert on fourth down inside their own 40 on the next drive. Hays though fumbled just two plays later at the 11. Neither offense could get a foothold for much of the first half following the fumble.

The Hays High defense that allowed just 41 yards in the last outing held Dodge City to two first downs in the first half and only 36 yards. The Red Demons had 4th and 25 from their own one yard line and elected to run the ball out of the end zone for a safety and a 10-0 Hays lead.&nbsp;

The Indians hit big on the ensuing drive. Jordan Dale found Kanak from 38 yards out and a 17-0 lead following the Jack Field PAT. Hays threatened to score again at the end of the first half after picking up a fumble but lost the ball on down at the Dodge City 19 yard line.

Hays held Dodge City to a punt to start second half and took over at their own five yard line. Eleven plays later Dreiling scored from eighteen yards out, his second touchdown of the night and a 23-0 lead.&nbsp;

The defense continued to hold Dodge City without points until 9:51 left to go in the game when Alden Knedler hit Matt Friess for a 17 yard pass and a 23-6 Hays advantage.&nbsp;

Linebacker Dalton Dale scored the final points for the Indians with a long interception returned for a touchdown with less than a minute remaining for the final 29-6 score.

Hays claimed the Western Athletic Conference crown for the first time since 2014. It also the first time since that season that Hays started at least 5-0.&nbsp;

Dreiling ended the night with 180 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Dale threw for 96 yards a score.

The Indians go on the road next week for a game against Maize South.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas coach Les Miles has tested positive for COVID-19 and is quarantining in his home, where he plans to fulfill his head coaching responsibilities remotely as the Jayhawks spend a week off before visiting West Virginia. 

Miles announced his positive test in a statement Thursday.

“Today, I was notified that I have tested positive for COVID-19. I am beginning the isolation process at my home and will continue to fulfill my head coach responsibilities remotely.

“Although I will not physically be able to attend practice for the time being, I will be using the technology available for remote working to stay connected during staff meetings, meetings with players, etc.

“Thank you for your prayers and support in advance. I look forward to beating this virus and returning back to be with my team in person very soon. Rock Chalk!”

🏐 Monarchs fall out of KVA poll, Victoria up one spot

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has taken every precaution he can imagine to prevent contracting&nbsp;COVID-19, putting limits on who visits his home and even sleeping in a separate bedroom from his pregnant fiancée.

Now, an admitted “mental lapse” by the Super Bowl MVP has his team on edge.

Mahomes had just taken a knee to run out the clock on the Chiefs’ 26-10 victory over the Patriots on Monday night in a game that was delayed 24 hours by positive tests on each team.

Amid an innocent scene of sportsmanship, NFL Defensive Player of the Year Stephon Gilmore approached Mahomes to give him a high-five and share a few words.

On Wednesday, the New England defensive back reportedly tested positive for COVID-19.

“If you thought you were going through the entire season and nobody was testing positive, you had some false hope,” Mahomes said later Wednesday. “Obviously with Brittany being pregnant, I do what I can to socially distance, wearing my mask and staying safe. To be available for the team but also to keep my family safe.”

Indeed, the Chiefs (4-0) are in a precarious state of midweek uncertainty.

Along with their own positive test, which has forced Jordan Ta’amu to attend team meetings remotely, the Chiefs are faced with the prospect that Gilmore may have spread COVID-19 to Mahomes and others. Gilmore played every defensive snap in the game, he twice tackled wide receiver Mecole Hardman and he was at the bottom of a scrum as he recovered a fumble.

Then there was that face-to-face chit-chat with Mahomes as the final seconds ticked off the clock.

“I think you just have to trust in the process and the protocols that are set in place,” Mahomes said. “Obviously knowing that I went to him after the game and gave him a high-five, like I have all my career and not thinking about it — it was a mental lapse, just sportsmanship. But I think the protocols are good.”

That’s not the end of the uncertainty, though. The Chiefs also are preparing to face Las Vegas on Sunday, and the Raiders were forced to put defensive tackle Maurice Hurst on the COVID-19 list — reserved for players who test positive or are in close contact to somebody who has tested positive — earlier this week.

The NFL and its players’ association already have been in contact with the Chiefs, and daily testing continues for players, coaches and staff members. But coach Andy Reid said there has been no additional contact tracing from the Patriots game, even though players wear devices that could tell whether Gilmore was within 6 feet of any players.

“Listen, we take it day by day and try to do the best we possibly can at keeping ourselves as clean as we can,” Reid said, “and at the same time learning every single day. We’re all wearing masks — we’ve been doing that — or shields, whatever. We are trying to keep our noses and mouths covered the best we possibly can. But listen, just like you guys, every day is a new experience you have to work through and that’s what we’re doing.”

Reid said he’s not prepared to isolate Mahomes or any individual player, but he did admit that “we have some guys doing virtual (meetings).” He also acknowledged the team is using every space possible within its practice facility, including the cafeteria and practice fields, so that they can socially distance in positional and full-squad meetings.

“After our meetings,” Reid said, “it looks like an Indy 500 pit crew coming through there changing tires, cleaning up the tables and making sure everything is disinfected and cleaned up.”

While the Chiefs have yet to have any additional positive tests since their game Monday night, they know that could change at any moment. And as they continue to prepare for Sunday, they are preparing for as many contingencies as possible.

“You know, it’s definitely crazy right now,” Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill said. “My job is to just come in and control the things I can control. That’s my safety and that’s my teammates’ safety. That’s my coaches’ safety and my kids’ safety. I’m going to continue to do everything I can, whether that’s wearing masks in meetings, even practicing throughout the week. I’m going to continue doing the things the NFL and the Chiefs have told us to do.”

wrapped up their regular season&nbsp; with another tournament win Tuesday. The Indians
took the Great Bend Invitational by 25 strokes over the host Panthers at
Stoneridge Country Club.

The Indians, who wrapped up the Western Athletic Conference title, have won six of their eight tournaments this fall and&nbsp;

The Indians claimed the top-four
spots. Taleia McCrae was top medalist with an 85, Sophia Garrison second with
an 86, Katie Dinkel also shot an 86 and finished third with Abbie Norris fourth with an 87.

McCrae is the Western Athletic
Conference Player of the Year, Garrison and Dinkel are also All-WAC with

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — It’s hard enough to slow down Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs under the best of circumstances.

Try doing it with your star quarterback shelved by COVID-19, a 40-year-old journeyman taking his place, your top running back headed to injured reserve and a flight that didn’t land in Kansas City until shortly before kickoff.

Yet the New England Patriots still managed to give the Chiefs fits for most of the way Monday night, hanging within a field goal of the Super Bowl champs until late in the third quarter. It wasn’t until Tyrann Mathieu took an interception back for a touchdown in the fourth that Kansas City clinched its 26-10 victory at Arrowhead Stadium.

“You’ve seen it this season. You’ve seen it last season. Even if you hold us down, we can go out there and make plays when they count,” said Mahomes, who threw for 236 yards and two touchdowns. “When your number is called you have to make plays, and I thought enough guys made plays that we were able to get out of there with a win.”

Tyreek Hill and Mecole Hardman had the TD grabs for the Chiefs, who have now won 13 straight games.

“We made plays when we had to make plays,” coach Andy Reid said, “and we can learn from this. We have to do better in a lot of areas, but it’s tough to win in this league and it’s tough to beat the Patriots in any situation.”

The marquee matchup was supposed to be Sunday, but it was put on pause when New England confirmed that a player — later revealed to be Cam Newton — tested positive for COVID-19. Later on Saturday, it came out that Chiefs practice squad QB Jordan Ta’amu also had tested positive, forcing the NFL to postpone the game.

More tests, including one taken at 6 a.m. ET on Monday, returned&nbsp;<a href="https://pro32.ap.org/article/ap-source-pats-chiefs-all-clear-no-positives-titans" target="_blank">no additional positives</a>&nbsp;from either team.

With their quarterback sidelined, and running back Sony Michel hitting the IR with a quad injury, the Patriots (2-2) were forced to lean on journeyman Brian Hoyer and a cast of running backs that never got into much of a rhythm.

Hoyer, who has now lost 11 straight starts for three different teams, was 15 of 24 for 130 yards and an interception before getting benched in the second half. Jarrett Stidham led the Patriots to a touchdown to close to 13-10, but he also threw two interceptions, including the pick-6 to Mathieu that propelled the Chiefs to their fourth straight 4-0 start.

“We had some opportunities tonight (and) weren’t able to take advantage of them. You can’t give a team like that those kind of opportunities,” Patriots coach Bill Belichick said. “Turned the ball over four times. Had too many penalties.”

Yet much of the way, Belichick’s run-heavy, drain-the-clock game plan worked.

The Chiefs marched downfield for a field goal on their first drive, added another later in the half, but otherwise had a hard time getting into gear. Sammy Watkins wasted a scoring chance by fumbling in the red zone, Mahomes was under constant duress and the rest of his wide receivers were blanketed by the New England secondary.

In fact, the Patriots could have been leading had Hoyer not made two monumental mistakes.

The first came in the closing seconds of the first half, when the Patriots had used their timeouts to drive into field-goal range. Hoyer was sacked by Frank Clark on third down, and the 40-year-old journeyman didn’t realize he couldn’t stop the clock. It hit zero and the Chiefs took a 6-3 lead into the locker room.

Hoyer’s second mistake came late in the third quarter, when he again felt the pocket collapse on a third-down play. This time, the Chiefs stripped the ball loose and recovered it, keeping New England from another field-goal attempt.

“Two bad decisions in the red area cost us points,” he said.

Give the Chiefs enough chances and they’ll usually close it out.

Finally taking advantage of a swing in momentum, Mahomes hit Hill and Travis Kelce with long passes to move swiftly downfield. And when Hill took a jet sweep to the pylon for a touchdown, the Chiefs had some breathing room.

The Patriots answered behind a long run from Damien Harris, who had just been activated off IR, and a nifty catch by N’Keal Harry in the end zone. But the Chiefs kept moving on offense, taking advantage of pass interference and personal foul penalties by the least-flagged team in the league to set up Hardman’s touchdown.

When Mathieu was perfectly positioned to catch a tipped pass and take it to the house, the Chiefs were headed toward a winning start to a grueling stretch of three games in 11 days that includes a visit to the Buffalo Bills.

“Still feel like we can play so much better and that I think’s the goal,” Mathieu said. “Forget about this game. Our younger guys stepped up, played well, but we’re getting into the thick of it. We have two real tough opponents coming up and we need to find a way to win the next two games.”

Patriots running back James White was back after missing two games following the death of his father. He carried three times for 21 yards and caught seven passes for 38 yards, then teared up during a postgame news conference.

“He meant everything for me,” White said. “He pushed me. He wouldn’t always tell me what I wanted to hear. But he always wanted me to do the right thing and pushed me to be the best I could be all the time.”

Patriots: Right guard Shaq Mason&nbsp;<a href="https://pro32.ap.org/article/patriots-without-rb-michel-vs-chiefs-monday-night" target="_blank">missed the game&nbsp;</a>after a calf injury popped up late last week. The Patriots offensive line was further depleted later in the first quarter, when right tackle Jermaine Eluemunor left with migraines.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused everyone to hit the pause button on life. During the stoppage and forced time away from routines, many people have come to appreciate the important things in life – family, friends and faith among others.&nbsp;

Still, the loss of some routines and regular activities hurt worse than others, namely last spring when high school sports and performing arts were shut down. Millions of students, coaches, parents and fans quickly began to realize the privilege of involvement in these education-based programs in schools.&nbsp;

Now, slowly but surely, high school sports and performing arts are on their way back into schools in Kansas and across the country. While things are different – with social distancing, universal masking protocols in place – there is a resounding feeling of thankfulness that some degree of normalcy is returning.

As a result, this year’s celebration of National High School Activities Month will be like none other in the 40-year history of the event. Since 1980, the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) and its member state associations have promoted the values of high school activity programs during the month of October, but this year will be extra special.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kicking off the month-long focus October 4-10 is National Sportsmanship, Fan Appreciation and Public-Address Announcers Week.

Hopefully, one of the silver linings of the pandemic is that parents and other fans are more grateful for any opportunity to attend contests this year and positively support student participants. At this time last year, there were numerous incidents of inappropriate adult behavior at high school events – mostly directed at officials.&nbsp;

This year, in addition to being respectful of officials, being a good fan involves supporting participants by social distancing and wearing a mask. Attending a high school contest is even more of a privilege, and players, coaches and officials need positive and encouraging support.

The week of October 11-17 is National Performing Arts Activities and Local State High School Associations Week.

More than four million high school students are involved in speech, debate, music, band and theatre activities each year. And the results of an aerosol study conducted by the NFHS and 125 other organizations show that if schools are in session, these activities can be safely conducted by implementing a mitigation strategy focused on Masks-Distance-Time-Air Flow-Hygiene.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Competing on the debate team or playing in the marching band or acting on stage as a part of the theatre team help students develop critical-thinking skills. They also learn to be better communicators and tend to be good listeners – qualities that are essential for success in life and in their chosen careers.

This week is also set aside to recognize the 51 NFHS member state associations, which have been working overtime for the past seven months with state government, health and education leaders to outline a safe return to activities.

The week of October 18-24 is National Coaches, Advisors, Officials and Sponsors Week.

High school coaches are playing an even larger role this year in connecting with their athletes – whether that connection is virtual or in-person. In some situations, a coach may be the most significant mentor in a student-athlete’s life, so keeping that relationship intact is paramount. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

The nationwide shortage of officials has been exacerbated by the pandemic as some officials have decided not to return. To help with this critical situation, the NFHS is continuing its #BecomeAnOfficial campaign. MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– Kansas State true freshman running back Deuce Vaughn was honored for a second-straight week as he was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week following his performance against Texas Tech, the conference office announced Monday.

It marks the third time in the last four years a Wildcat has earned consecutive weekly conference honors, and it is the first of the newcomer variety since&nbsp;Skylar Thompson&nbsp;was honored after the Oklahoma State and Iowa State games in 2017.

Vaughn totaled 194 scrimmage yards against the Red Raiders, rushing for 113 yards and a touchdown while also hauling in three passes for 81 yards, which included a 70-yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter to put the game away.

A product of Round Rock, Texas, Vaughn became the first Wildcat true freshman with a 100-yard rushing game since Logan Dold did so in 2008 against Texas A&amp;M. His 70-yard reception gave him back-to-back games with a reception of at least 70 yards, the first Wildcat to accomplish that feat in the regular season since Tyler Lockett in 2013 against Oklahoma and TCU.

Vaughn’s 194 scrimmage yards against Texas Tech are the most by any player in the nation this year, and he also holds the No. 2 spot with 174 yards (45 rushing, 129 receiving) at No. 3 Oklahoma.

Klieman, who led the Wildcats to eight wins and a bowl berth in his first season at K-State, is one of the winningest active head coaches in the country (82-19) and has continued to elevate the Wildcat program in just one-plus seasons at the helm. Under the terms of the new contract, Klieman will be paid an annual base salary of $3.1 million in 2021, $3.5 million in 2022, $4 million in 2023, $4.3 million in 2024, $4.3 million in 2025 and $4.3 million in 2026. The contract calls for several new incentives which includes retention bonuses in 2021 and 2022 and also additional years for winning eight or more regular season games in a season. “Chris and his staff have done a phenomenal job in their short time at K-State, and we are excited that he will be here for a very long time,” Taylor said. “We had been in discussions for an extended period of time, but certainly with sensitivity surrounding the COVID pandemic, we wanted to wait and finalize this contract once we were back to playing football and had some sense of certainty about the season. MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Deuce Vaughn had a rushing touchdown and another receiving, Will Howard threw for 173 yards and a score and Kansas State held off Texas Tech for a 31-21 win Saturday.

Up 24-21 with two minutes left, Howard found Vaughn across the middle on third down for a 70-yard touchdown pass to seal the win.

Henry Colombi threw for 244 yards and two touchdowns, Xavier White added 113 yards rushing and a score on 12 carries for Texas Tech, which lost its ninth game in 10 tries against the Wildcats.

Colombi had one big mistake despite an efficient performance, throwing into double coverage on a drive deep in Wildcat territory which was intercepted by Jahron McPherson late in the fourth quarter.

Both starting quarterbacks spent more time in the locker room than the field after suffering injuries in the first half.

Red Raiders QB Alan Bowman left the game after he took a hit to his right leg midway through the first quarter and didn’t return.

Halfway through the second quarter, Kansas State’s Skylar Thompson was hit and injured his right arm. He watched the second half from the sideline in a sling after going 5 of 10 for 33 yards and a passing touchdown.

Highly-touted freshman Will Howard, who took over for Thompson, completed 7 of 12 passes and looked poised in first game as a Wildcat.
