GREAT BEND – The Hays High volleyball team saw their season
come to an end Saturday, losing 25-20, 25-19 to rival Great Bend in the first-round
of the Great Bend 5A Sub-State.

The host Panthers defeated Salina Central 25-19, 25-22 to advance to the 5A state quarterfinals.

The Indians finished their first season under head coach
Shannon Funk with a 13-23 record.

🏐 HHS falls in regionals

BARTON COUNTY – The Hays High girls’ cross country team finished six points out of third place and just missed qualifying for next weeks 5A State Championships. The Indians finished in fourth Saturday at the Great Bend 5A Regional run at the
Lake Barton Golf Course.

The top three teams and top 10 individuals qualify for next Saturday's state meet at the 4 Mile Creek Resort in Andover.

HHS freshman freshman Arely Maldonado qualified for state as an individual after a ninth place finish (20:16.59).&nbsp;

Maize South placed
three in the top four and won the team title with 24 points. Great Bend finished
in second place with 68 points and Valley Center third with 84.

Maize won the boys race, three points better than Maize
South. Great Bend finished third. The Hays High boys placed sixth.

Freshman Leonardo Hernandez led the Indians with a 16th
place finish (17:48.73).

TRIBUNE, Kan. – The La Crosse boys cross country team finished
in second place at the Greeley County 1A Regional Saturday at the Prairie Ridge
Golf Course and qualified for next Saturday’s 1A state meet at the Sand Plum
Nature Trail in Victoria.

The Leopards scored 46 points, 17 behind regional champion
Meade. Quinter finished in third palce with 50 points.

La Crosse senior Blake Pierce won the regional title with a
time of 17:45.95, around 15 seconds faster than Michael Gallegos of
Montezuma-South Gray.

Ness City senior Seth Flax finished in seventh place with a
time of 18:32.80). Jonathan Hamel of Stockton placed eighth (18:47.39). Quinter’s
Eli Gruenbacher finished in ninth place (18:54.62).

The Quinter girls’ finished second to qualify for the state
meet as a team. They scored 37 points, 12 behind Meade.

The Bulldogs were led by sophomore Leah Anstaett who
finished in sixth place (22:56.32). Kaydence Kendall of La Crosse qualified for
state with a ninth place finish (23:22.37).

LAKIN – The TMP-Marian Monarchs shrugged off a slow start in
route&nbsp; to a huge win over the Lakin
Broncs Friday night as they clinched their first district title since 2002 with
a 46-14 win.

On just the third offensive play of the game the Monarchs
fumbled the center-quarterback exchange that gave Lakin the ball deep in TMP
territory. To make matters worse the Monarchs were offsides and the first play
on defense giving Lakin the ball at the TMP 37-yard line.

The Broncs wasted no time driving down the field in just
three plays and taking the lead on a five-yard touchdown run. They added the
two-point conversion and led 8-0 just about two and a half minutes into the
contest.

TMP’s all-league return man Kade Harris got TMP on the board
when he returned the ensuing kickoff 75 yards to cut Lakin’s lead to 8-7 after
the extra-point.

On the next possession Lakin turned it over on downs and
midfield and that set up Harris’ first of four touchdown passes on the night.
This one from 18 yards out to Andrew Schwartz. 

With TMP lead 13-7 early in the second quarter Harris again
found Schwartz on a 71-yard touchdown pass that put TMP up 20-7.

A little more than two minutes later Harris scored on a
10-yard run as TMP took a 26-7 lead.

On their first offensive play following the touchdown Lakin
scored on a 80-yard halfback pass to cut the deficit to 26-14.

Harris threw his third first-half touchdown on the next drive
to Jace Wentling, his fifth in three weeks giving TMP a 33-14 lead.

Late in the first-half with Lakin driving again the Broncs
running back Allen Martinez fumbled and Schwartz picked it up and returned it
53 yards for the touchdown. It was his second defense touchdown of the second
and the team’s fourth.

Harris added his fourth and final touchdown pass of the game
in the third quarter, a 41-yard shovel pass that put TMP on top 46-14.

Harris finished 7-of-9 passing for a career-high 263 yards
and four touchdowns.

Schwartz had 89 receiving yards on two touchdown receptions.
Mark Rack also collected of pair of receptions for 65 yards.

Lakin’s Allen Martinez tallied 165 yards on 27 carries.

With the win TMP clinches their first district title since
2002 and will host Beloit next Friday night in the first round of the 2A
playoffs.

The 7-1 record matches their best start and their first seven-game
win streak since 1988.

🏈TMP claims district title in rout of Lakin

HAYS - Hays High hosted Kapaun on a cold Friday at Lewis Field Stadium. The showdown was big for seeding purposes in 5A West with both teams at 5-1 on the season. Kapaun entered the game seeded fifth and Hays sixth before the final game of the regular season.

Each team turned the ball over twice in the first half. Kapaun started in Hays territory on each of their ensuing drives once at the five and once at the thirty-two yard line. The Crusaders scored on both of the possessions.&nbsp;

Following the Hays takeaways the Indians started at their own 30 and the Kapaun 40. Hays did not score on either of the drives throwing an interception on the first and missing a field goal on their second after reaching the 15 yard line resulting in a 14-0 Kapaun lead at halftime.

Kapaun opened the second half with a touchdown on the first play of the second half but it was called back on a block in the back. The Indians forced a punt and then intercepted a pass on the next series, the second for Tucker Veach on the night. The Indians next offense series opened with a 43 yard run but was called back for a hold.&nbsp;

The Hays offense would never gain much traction following that series. The offense gave up a safety on first down from their own half yard. Kapaun took the ensuing kickoff back 56 yards for a touchdown. They bobbled the snap on the extra point but were able to score a two point conversion. The sequence of the ten points took a total of twelve seconds resulting in a 24-0 Kapaun advantage.

Hays finally found the end zone with 3:04 remaining on a Dylan Dreiling four yard touchdown run. The Indians two point conversion failed for the final score of 24-6.

Hays falls to 5-2 on the year while Kapaun improves to 6-1. Hays will be the six seed in the week nine game and host at Lewis Field Stadium. At the time of this publication Hays is unofficially set to host Maize South. The Indians lost to Maize South in week seven 21-20.

🏐 Area teams remain ranked in KVA poll

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Le’Veon Bell once carried the ball a league-leading 321 times in a single season for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

He doesn’t figure to get nearly as many chances with the Kansas City Chiefs.

That’s just fine with the two-time All-Pro running back, though. Bell has been the focal point of defenses for the majority of his career, whether that was in Pittsburgh or during his short stint with the New York Jets. But now Bell’s on a team with so much offensive firepower that he could only marvel while watching them beat the Buffalo Bills on Monday night.

“I was just like, ‘This is unbelievable,’” said Bell, who had to return a week’s worth of negative COVID-19 tests before joining his new team. He took the practice field for the first time Wednesday ahead of Sunday’s game in Denver.

“I was watching kind of like, ‘As a defense, they’re so tough to stop,’” Bell continued. “There’s so many weapons. You have to pick your poison. You have the guys coaching, the offensive line, the quarterback — they’re all making the right decision and all on the same page. It’s a tough offense to stop. I’m just going to come in and fit in where I can.”

That might not have been the attitude the 28-year-old Bell had earlier in his career.

After making a trio of Pro Bowl trips and becoming a star with the Steelers, he earned a me-first reputation when he sat out an entire season in a contract dispute. And it didn’t go away when he took to social media and liked a series of tweets from fans and pundits that questioned his usage — or lack thereof — in Jets coach Adam Gase’s offensive system.

When the Jets eventually released him, Bell said he quickly narrowed his options to three teams. But one stood out above the rest, and not just because his offseason training partner, Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones, was constantly in his ear.

Bell knew that no matter how involved he would be in the Chiefs offense, he would have a chance to win a championship.

“I mean, obviously when I decided to come here I knew the weapons. There’s only one football to go around,” said Bell, who will share the bulk of the running load with Clyde Edwards-Helaire. “The times when I do get my opportunities, I think there is going to be a chance to show what I can do.”

Bell’s patient running style is a good fit for a rejuvenated offensive line, and his ability to catch passes out of the backfield is an important element of coach Andy Reid’s system. And while Bell knows the first read will often be to wide receiver Tyreek Hill, tight end Travis Kelce or another pass-catcher, there will still be chances to get his hands on the ball in the passing game.

“He’s a mismatch coming out of the backfield, the way he’s able to run routes, split out and be another receiver out there. It’s special,” Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said. “He’s going to have a lot of matchups with linebackers on him and I’m sure he’s pretty excited about that.”

Exactly how involved Bell will be in the short term will depend on his ability to quickly pick up the playbook.

Reid long has had a reputation for a robust menu of plays, and learning them all with a full offseason and training camp is difficult enough. But Bell will have to do it on the fly, picking up just enough to make him available on Sunday, then adding to his knowledge each week through the remainder of the season.

“I think we’ll take it day by day and just see how he does and what he’s comfortable with,” Reid said. “One thing you try not to forget is how much volume you have at this point in the year. Really you just have to have good communication between us, the coaches, and the player, and see exactly where he’s at. He’ll get in there and practice and we’ll see where it goes.”

🏈 Tigers to hold scrimmage on October 31

HAYS – For the first time since early March, the Fort Hays State
football team returned to the practice field Tuesday afternoon. 

The Tigers were barely into their spring practice schedule when
it was halted by the COVID-19 shutdown. After the season was canceled late this summer, the team has had an off-season approach with weights and conditioning along with position
group practice but Tuesday marked the first time the entire team was on the field
together.

“It is one of the best feelings” said FHSU head coach Chris
Brown. “It’s still kind of hard with all of the protocols you have to follow
with the social distancing, the masks and all of those things making sure our
kids stay healthy.”

“Great feeling being back out here. It was fun, it was
enjoyable.” Brown added. “One of the best parts of my day is being out here on
the field with these kids and seeing them compete and get after it.”

Brown says they plan to hold a couple of intra-squad
scrimmages which will be open to fans before concluding their fall workouts
before Thanksgiving.

SALINA – The Hays High girls’ golf team improved their team
score by seven strokes Tuesday and finished in fourth place at the 5A State
Golf Championships at the Salina Municipal Golf Course. 

The Indians shot a 354
in Monday’s first round then closed with a 347 on Tuesday for a 701 total which was five
strokes behind third place St. Thomas Aquinas.

Kapaun Mt. Carmel won the team title with a 665, seven shots better than Mill Valley who finished second.

Senior Sierra Smith had the best improvement from day one to day two. After shooting a 104 on Monday, she bounced back with a 91 in her second round Tuesday which was the difference in Hays passing Andover on the team leaderboard.

The Indians had two medalists led by Taleia McCrae who finished in 18th
place. The junior closed with an 85 after shooting an 81 in Monday’s first
round.&nbsp;

Indian sophomore Katie Dinkel placed 19th, three strokes
behind McCrae. After shooting an 86 on Monday, Dinkel closed with an 83 in the
final round which included a 37 on the front nine.

Senior Sophia Garrison shot an 88 in the final round and
tied for 24th.

Mill Valley’s Libby Green won the individual title. She
closed with a 4-over-par 74 and finished the two-day event at 3-over-par.

After shooting a 77 in Monday’s first-round, Starbuck closed with an 81 in the
final round on Tuesday and finished at 14-over-par at the two-day event.

Plainville sophomore Corbyn Marquess, who was four shots
back of Starbuck after day one, shot an 84 in the final round and placed
second, seven shots off the pace.

Colby’s Brinley Sims finished in eighth place with a 185
while teammate Mya Betz tied for 18th.

Colgan sophomore Ali Scripsick placed third, seven back of
Marquess.

TMP-Marian’s Allison Applequist finished in 25th placed.

Division II Management Council adjusts basketball championship selection criteria

Division II winter sport student-athletes who compete during the 2020-21 academic year will receive an additional season of competition through a waiver the Division II Management Council approved this week. In addition, student-athletes eligible for this waiver also will receive an extension of eligibility, according to a waiver previously approved by the Division II Administrative Committee.

The same flexibility was provided to spring sport athletes after their 2020 seasons were canceled and to fall student-athletes after the Division II Championships were canceled as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Previously, the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.ncaa.org/about/resources/media-center/news/dii-grants-all-fall-athletes-further-season-competition-relief?division=d2">Administrative Committee approved a pair of waivers</a>&nbsp;permitting all student-athletes who competed during the 2020-21 academic year an additional year of eligibility and season-of-competition opportunities if their team completed 50% or less of their sport’s maximum contests/dates of competition. That flexibility still applies for spring sport student-athletes in the 2021 season.

The Division II Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement recommended the most recent waiver for winter sport athletes due to the likelihood that their seasons will be impacted by COVID-19 in ways similar to fall sports.

“Winter student-athletes lost out on their championship opportunity last season and many will have shortened, conference-only seasons this year,” said Chris Graham, commissioner of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and chair of the Division II Management Council. “We believe providing the maximum season-of-competition waiver flexibility is the right thing to do for winter student-athletes who continue to be impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Related to the waiver for winter sport athletes, financial aid flexibility was proactively provided by the Administrative Committee during its Sept. 2 meeting. For the 2021-22 academic year, schools may exempt athletics aid given to all student-athletes who would have exhausted their eligibility during this academic year. This relief applies only to student-athletes who remain at their current schools. Transfers who would have exhausted their eligibility this academic year and receive athletics aid in 2021-22 will count toward team equivalency limits.

The Management Council reduced the minimum number of contests required for championships selection for men’s and women’s basketball from 15 games to 11 for the 2020-21 academic year.

The Division II Championships Committee recommended the reduction due to concerns about health and safety, flexibility and consistency.

The majority of Division II conferences will not begin athletics activities until after Jan. 1, resulting in a compressed regular-season schedule for basketball. The change to 11 games for basketball also aligns with the 50% reduction to other sports’ minimum required contest numbers for championships selection.

Additionally, the Management Council approved a proposal to change the dates of the 2021 Division II men’s and women’s swimming and diving championships from March 10-13 to March 17-20 in Birmingham, Alabama. To account for the date change, the council extended the playing and practice seasons for men’s and women’s swimming and diving from 144 days to 151. Their championships were originally scheduled to be part of the 2021 Division II National Championships Festival, along with the Division II wrestling and indoor track and field championships, but the 2021 festival was canceled due to health and safety concerns. The track and field and swimming and diving championships will remain at the CrossPlex, as originally scheduled. However, to ensure the health and safety of student-athletes, one of the championships needed to change dates. The wrestling championships will still take place on their originally scheduled date of March 12-13 at a location to be determined.

The Management Council advanced three proposals related to the Division II infractions process for the Presidents Council to sponsor for the 2022 NCAA Convention. The Presidents Council meets Oct. 28.

The proposals include enhancement tools like noncooperation penalties and importation of facts. Importation would allow the enforcement staff or Committee on Infractions to bring in information from outside proceedings, such as court cases. The council also advanced a proposal that would establish a negotiated resolution process similar to that of Division I’s.

The three proposals were put forward by the Division II Enforcement and Infractions Task Force, which was created to study the recent changes made to the Division I infractions process and recommend ways to enhance Division II’s process. The task force is expected to complete its work in summer 2021.
