Hays City Shootout Day 1

The Kansas high school basketball season got underway Thursday in Hays with the 39th Annual Gerald Mitchell Hays City Shootout. The field contained six teams in 2021. Hays, TMP, Olathe West, Hugoton and Great Bend brought both their girls and boys teams. Lawrence-Free State was represented in the boys bracket and Northside from Fort Smith, Arkansas on the girls side.

Girls
TMP 42 - Hays 37

Hays High led 5-0 and 12-8 over the game's first eleven minutes. The Indians then went on a long scoring drought while TMP jumped out to the lead with a 19-0 run that lasted into the second half. Hays went scoreless for 9:58 and 14:07 between field goals.

Highlights


The offensive woes continued for Hays until the fourth quarter. TMP built their lead to a game high 19 at 33-14 with the first basket of the final quarter. The Indians finally found momentum on offense using a 21-5 run to get within three points at 38-35 with 26 seconds left. TMP though made their last four free throws to hold off the late Hays High surge 42-37.

Hays was led in scoring by Aleyia Ruder with 11 points all from the fourth quarter. The Indians fall to 0-1. #7-3A TMP improves to 1-0.

Boys
Hays 69 - TMP 36

Hays jumped out to four different ten point leads in the first quarter and led 19-9 after the first eight minutes. The game was tied once at two points when the Indians hit four straight baskets for their first double digit lead at 12-2.

The Indians continued to build the lead through the second quarter outscoring TMP 18-7 for a 37-16 lead at halftime. 

Highlights

Hays was never threatened in the second half building a lead as high as 30 in the fourth quarter to start the continuous clock.

Hays shot 52% for the game and made nine three pointers. Jace Linenberger led the Indians with 18 points. He was the only player for Hays with double figures. Overall twelve players entered the game for the Indians and eleven of them scored.

Hays improves to 1-0 on the year and will play Olathe West at 8:15 in the semifinals. TMP drops to 0-1. Full day one results below and day two schedule below.
