UNDATED (AP) - Salvador Pérez still remembers growing up in the coastal Venezuelan city of Valencia, where as a youngster he would take batting practice against his mother with a broomstick and later play organized ball with the likes of José Altuve.

He never thought a day like Sunday could be possible.

That’s when the Royals gave the six-time All-Star catcher a four-year, $82 million deal — the richest in club history — that will begin after his current contract in 2022. The deal ties Pérez to the only organization for which he’s played until at least 2025, though a club option worth $13.5 million could keep him around for that season, too.

“It’s hard to believe where I’m coming from, where I grew up, to see the situation I have right now, it makes me feel super happy,” Pérez said from the Royals’ spring training home in Surprise, Arizona. “My mother is going to be happy. I know my grandma is going to be happy. I know they’re excited for me to be here for four more years, maybe five.”

Pérez is due a base salary of $13 million as he completes his current contract. He will make $18 million next season, $20 million in 2023 and 2024, and $22 million in 2025 with a $2 million buyout for 2026.

The value of the new deal surpasses the four-year, $72 million contract the Royals gave outfielder Alex Gordon in 2016.

“Nobody loves to play baseball more than Salvador Pérez. There are players that like it just as much but nobody loves it more,” Royals general manager Dayton Moore said. “Nobody can imagine him not being here.”

Pérez, who turns 31 in May, has not only established himself as one of the game’s premier catchers but also one of the most beloved players in Royals history. He was World Series MVP in 2015, when the club broke its 30-year title drought, and is coming off a season in which he hit .333 with 11 homers and 32 RBIs to win his third Silver Slugger.

He also has five Gold Gloves to his name, and the Royals are counting on his ability to bring out the best in their pitchers to help a young and promising starting rotation that they hope will lead them back to the playoffs.

“I mean, the catching position is without a doubt the most demanding position in our game,” Moore said. “It’s hard, I think almost impossible, to win championships unless you have somebody behind the plate, somebody at the catcher position, that’s a leader — that brings out the confidence in your pitching staff. And Salvy does all that.”

Indeed, Pérez also has proven to be durable behind the plate. He appeared in at least 129 games six consecutive seasons, often arguing against getting days off, until missing the entire 2019 season due to Tommy John surgery.

He returned to have one of the best seasons of his career during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season.

“It’s the same with everybody: You trust your medical people,” Moore said. “Of course we talked about Salvy, but at the end of the day, they all signed off on it because they believe in his work ethic. They believe in the condition of his body. They believe in his heart and mind to play. He puts himself in a position to go out there every single day.”

Pérez also happens to be a personal favorite of John Sherman, the former part-owner of the AL Central rival Indians, who leads the ownership group that purchased the Royals from the late David Glass prior to last season.

Sherman called a summit in Florida in January that included Moore, Pérez and several other executives, and it was during that meeting that they began hashing out the framework for the new contract. It wound up getting done just weeks before opening day, when the Royals hope to welcome about 10,000 fans back to Kauffman Stadium for each game.

“You know, they believe in me and what I do on the field,” Pérez said, “and all the fans in Kansas City, you know?”

The small-market Royals have long had a reputation for being stingy with contracts, but Pérez’s new deal is the latest sign that Sherman and the new owners are willing to open the checkbook to put a winner on the field.

This past offseason alone, the Royals signed slugging first baseman Carlos Santana to a two-year, $17.5 million contract; they worked an aggressive three-team trade to land Red Sox outfielder Andrew Benintendi; they lured right-hander Mike Minor back to town with a two-year, $18 million deal; they bolstered their beleaguered bullpen by signing former All-Star pitchers Greg Holland and Wade Davis, both part of their championship past.

They also have shown a willingness to reward their own. The Royals started March off by signing third baseman Hunter Dozier to a four-year, $25 million contract with the hope that he can bounce back from a rough 2020 season.

As for Pérez, he had no interest in trying out free agency for the first time after this season.

“I want to stay here,” he said simply. “I want to finish my career here.”

TMP-Marian senior Abby Rueschhoff recently signed a letter of intent to continue her academic and track and field career at Cowley County.

Rueschhoff expects to compete in the long jump, triple jump and possibly the 600 meters for the Tigers.

She finished 9th at state in the triple jump as a sophomore.

TMP senior Allison Applequist signed a letter of intent Friday to continue her golf and academic career at Bethany College.

Applequist, who only played two years of high school golf, is a two-time state qualifier for the Monarchs. She finished 25th at the 3-2-1A state tournament as a senior.

HAYS - After having their season cancelled due to CIVOD-19, the Fort Hats State football team was back on the field Saturday with a scrimmage against Southwestern Oklahoma State, and cruised to a 31-3 win over the Bulldogs at Lewis Field.

There were no kickoffs or punts and no hitting of the quarterback in the scrimmage.

"It was good to get back out there on the football field." said head coach Chris Brown. "You can tell we hadn't played a true game for 16 months. You can tell we're really young right now and we have a lot of guys that need to figure out our offense and defense."

After their first drive stalled near midfield, Chance Fuller connected with tight end Hunter Budke on a 14 yard touchdown pass on the Tigers second possession . Fuller completed a 12-yard pass to freshman wide receiver Alex Schremmer on third and 10 early in the possession to keep the drive alive.&nbsp;

Unofficially, Fuller completed nine of 14 passes for 149 yards and two touchdowns. His second scoring strike came early in the second quarter when he connected with Diante Crutchfield on a 74-yard pass to put the Tigers up 14-3.

Junior running back Keylon Chapman pushed the lead to 21-3 with a 79-yard touchdown run two possessions later. Chapman unofficially rushed for 135 yards on seven carries

Following a three-and-out by the Tiger defense, backup quarterback Vashon Waiters hit Adrian Soto on a 17-yard touchdown pass to give the Tigers a 28-3 lead with under three minutes to play in the second quarter

Jordan Starks intercepted a pass on the ensuing possession at the half.

Fernando Avila-Castro kicked a 32-yard field goal on the Tigers second possession of the third quarter.

SWOSU's only score came on a 30-yard field goal late in the first quarter. The score was set up by a 35-yard flee-flicker and a pass interference penalty on FHSU near the endzone.

The Tiger defense had stops on the next five possessions to help them gain control of the game.

FHSU is scheduled to travel to Golden, Colo. in two weeks for their final spring scrimmage against Colorado School of Mines.

⚽ Arndt provides game winner, Tigers post third shutout of the spring

HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State women's soccer team picked up their first win of the 2021 spring season with a 4-0 defeat of Nebraska-Kearney Saturday afternoon (Mar. 20) in Hays. Newcomers Amanda Rapaduski and Carly Walker&nbsp;were responsible for the four goals, including a hat trick from Rapaduski. With the win, the Tigers wrap up their non-confernece schedule at 1-1-1. The Lopers&nbsp;drop their record to 0-2 on the spring season.&nbsp; Fort Hays got out to a fast start in the first half going against the wind. Just six minutes into the match, Rapaduski&nbsp;knotted her first goal of the game. She found herself on the right side of the field with a Loper defender sprinting at her. The junior put on the brakes and powered a shot past the goalkeeper to put the Tigers on the board. A few moments later, Rapaduski&nbsp;earned a penalty kick after being fouled in the box. She cashed in on the chance to double the lead for FHSU. Rapaduski completed a first-half hat trick by sliding the ball through the short side of the keeper to end the half.&nbsp; The offensive pressure did not slow down after intermission. The Tigers added another goal midway through the second half off the foot of Walker who used the wind to her advantage as she curled her shot into the upper 90 of the net, cementing the victory for the Tigers.&nbsp;

Deonna Wellbrock and Meghan Groom combined for a clean sheet in goal. Wellbrock made a few crucial saves to keep the Lopers off the board in the first half, including a couple loose ball situations in front of the net. Groom stopped the few shots that came her way in the second half to complete the shutout.&nbsp; The Tigers will get a short break before returning to action at FHSU Soccer Stadium. Fort Hays State and Central Oklahoma will kick off from Hays on April 1 at 5:00 p.m.&nbsp;

⚾ Tigers swept by Rogers State

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — David McCormack gave third-seeded Kansas a spark when the big man returned from his COVID-19 quarantine in time to practice for its NCAA Tournament opener.

When the first round game against Eastern Washington began, McCormack gave the Jayhawks much more than a boost of energy.

Put on the ropes early by Tanner Groves and the Big Sky champs, McCormack responded by piling up 22 points and nine rebounds in 25 minutes of work to help slow-starting Kansas rally from a 10-point second-half deficit and beat the No. 14 seed Eagles 93-84 on Saturday to advance to the second round.

“David brought us energy from the time he arrived yesterday,” said Marcus Garrett, one of his closest friends, who fought through foul trouble to add 20 points. “He was just happy to be with us, happy to be back on the court.”

Ochai Agbaji contributed 21 points, Dajuan Harris Jr. scored 13 and Christian Braun overcame a poor shooting day to score 12 as the Jayhawks (21-8) survived the scare to play sixth-seeded Southern California for a spot in the Sweet 16.

Kansas has now won 14 consecutive first-round games in the NCAA Tournament.

“We told our guys you have to play well so your teammates get a chance to experience this,” said Kansas coach Bill Self, whose team is still missing Jalen Wilson and Tristan Enaruna due to COVID-19.

“We didn’t talk about what we did not have, we talked about what we had, that we had to play well, and what we had was enough.”

Tanner Groves scored a career-high 35 points and younger brother Jacob Groves had 23 for the Eagles (16-8), whose third trip to the NCAA Tournament ended just as quickly as the first two — though not without putting up a fight.

The aptly named “Groves Bros” got Eastern Washington off to a flying start. The pair of All-Big Sky forwards combined to score the first nine points of the game and forced Jayhawks coach Bill Self to burn through early timeouts.

Kansas settled down and put together a 17-5 run and suddenly looked again like the big boys out of the Big 12. But Shantay Legans’ motley crew of underrated and overlooked sharp-shooters finished the half on a 24-10 charge.

The Groves kids were at it again. They combined for 3-pointers on three straight trips down floor, then Tyler Robertson added a fourth from the top of the key to give Eastern Washington a 46-38 lead headed into the locker room.

“I just thought Tanner had the advantage all game long and he came up big for us,” Legans said. “He came up aces.”

Compounding problems for Kansas: Garrett, one of the nation’s best defenders, picked up his third foul before the break.

Self turned to McCormack to bail the Jayhawks out. Even though he was only expected to play about 10 minutes a half after his bout with COVID-19, the big guy went to work in the paint as if he hadn’t missed a day. He scored their first eight points of the second half, trying to keep Kansas alive until his teammates could find their shots.

They finally did midway through the second half.

Still trailing 63-59, Agbaji threw down a dunk in transition to begin a game-changing 14-3 run. Seldom-used Harris drained back-to-back 3-pointers, McCormack added back-to-back buckets inside, and Garrett — who is hardly known for his outside shooting — hit the first of his three second-half 3s as the Jayhawks took a 73-66 lead.

McCormack, who tested positive for the coronavirus before last week’s Big 12 Tournament, continued to score in the post down the stretch, helping the Jayhawks avoid the same fate that befell top-four seed Ohio State and Purdue on Friday.

“We came up short but that’s alright. I’m just really happy with the performance our team put together,” Tanner Groves said. “It feels really cool that we were able to keep it really close with Kansas — make it a game, give them a little scare.”

Eastern Washington followed the recipe for an upset perfectly: It shot 50% from the field, hit 10 3-pointers, protected the ball and battled the Jayhawks to a standstill on the glass. But the Eagles’ defense let them down in the second half, when Kansas began getting open looks and knocking them down.

Kansas could get Wilson back for the next round, though the timing will be tight. The Jayhawks’ leading rebounder is due to finish his quarantine period on Sunday, meaning he would not get to practice before their next game. Enaruna would not be cleared to return until the middle of next week.

The Jayhawks will face the Trojans on Monday for a spot in the West Region semifinal game.

&nbsp;EMPORIA, Kan. - The Fort Hays State track and field team took home first place as a team in its outdoor opener Friday (March 19) at the ESU Spring Invitational thanks to six individual titles and three provisional performances. The Tigers scored 157.5 points as a team, 28 more than second-place Emporia State. The Tigers had two freshmen clear the NCAA Division II provisional threshold in the javelin throw in their first collegiate competition.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5987">Rhyann Brown</a>&nbsp;placed third with a toss of 154-3 after improving her mark by more than 14 feet on her sixth and final toss of the day, while&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5986">Addie Berens</a>&nbsp;finished sixth thanks to a mark of 143-2. Brown's toss is good for fourth all-time at FHSU while Berens now sits in 11th all-time at FHSU. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5964">Laurel Haley</a>&nbsp;surpassed the provisional mark in the hammer throw with a personal-best heave of 178-3 to place fourth, 14 feet better than her previous top mark and just one&nbsp;foot, five inches off the program record.  </figure>&nbsp;EMPORIA, Kan. - The Fort Hays State track and field team took home first place as a team in its outdoor opener Friday (March 19) at the ESU Spring Invitational thanks to six individual titles and three provisional performances. The Tigers scored 157.5 points as a team, 28 more than second-place Emporia State. The Tigers had two freshmen clear the NCAA Division II provisional threshold in the javelin throw in their first collegiate competition.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5987">Rhyann Brown</a>&nbsp;placed third with a toss of 154-3 after improving her mark by more than 14 feet on her sixth and final toss of the day, while&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5986">Addie Berens</a>&nbsp;finished sixth thanks to a mark of 143-2. Brown's toss is good for fourth all-time at FHSU while Berens now sits in 11th all-time at FHSU. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5964">Laurel Haley</a>&nbsp;surpassed the provisional mark in the hammer throw with a personal-best heave of 178-3 to place fourth, 14 feet better than her previous top mark and just one&nbsp;foot, five inches off the program record. Haley was the top Division II&nbsp;finisher in the discipline and now sits in second on the all-time performance list in FHSU. The junior also placed fifth in the discus with a toss of 137-3. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5976">Emily Salmans</a>&nbsp;came away with a pair of first-place finishes, winning the 800m run with a time of 2:15.30 before crossing the line first in the 1,500m run in a personal-best 4:43.84. Her 800m time is fourth all-time at FHSU while she now sits in sixth on the all-time list in the 1,500m run.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5969">Faith Little</a>&nbsp;finished close behind in fourth in the 800m run with a personal-best time of 2:17.22, good for eighth on the all-time list at FHSU. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5975">Mattie Rossi</a>&nbsp;finished first in both hurdle events, posting personal-best times in both the 100m hurdles at 14.97 and in the 400m hurdles at 1:04.27. 🏃‍♀️ Tiger women win ESU Spring Invite

EMPORIA, Kan. - The Fort Hays State men's track and field team won the team portion of the ESU Spring Invitational Friday (March 19) thanks to three provisional performances and six first-place finishes. The Tigers accumulated 144 points in the team score race, 19 more than second place Emporia State. All three provisional marks came in field events for the Tigers.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5931">Ryan Stanley</a>&nbsp;opened the outdoor season with a win in the pole vault, clearing the 16-6.75 bar.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5914">Blayne Godshall</a>&nbsp;won the high jump after surpassing the provisional threshold with a personal-best clearance of 6-8.75, good for ninth all-time at FHSU.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5909">David Enns</a>&nbsp;also posted a provisional mark in the javelin throw after placing sixth with a heave of 201-0. EMPORIA, Kan. - The Fort Hays State men's track and field team won the team portion of the ESU Spring Invitational Friday (March 19) thanks to three provisional performances and six first-place finishes. The Tigers accumulated 144 points in the team score race, 19 more than second place Emporia State. All three provisional marks came in field events for the Tigers.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5931">Ryan Stanley</a>&nbsp;opened the outdoor season with a win in the pole vault, clearing the 16-6.75 bar.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5914">Blayne Godshall</a>&nbsp;won the high jump after surpassing the provisional threshold with a personal-best clearance of 6-8.75, good for ninth all-time at FHSU.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5909">David Enns</a>&nbsp;also posted a provisional mark in the javelin throw after placing sixth with a heave of 201-0. The Tigers took home first place in four races, including&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5929">Robbie Schmidt</a>&nbsp;in the 5,000m run. &nbsp;HAYS, Kan. - Fort Hays State had the potential tying run thrown out at the plate and drop the opening game of their three-game series with Rogers State 7-6 Friday afternoon at Larks Park.

Down two runs with o outs in the ninth,Drake Angeron singled to left scoring pinch runner Jaxson Webb from third but Ed Scott was called out at the plate trying to score from second, to end the game.

The Tigers are now 2-12 on the year and 2-8 in MIAA play, while the Hillcats move to 8-6 overall and 5-5 in conference action.

FHSU led for much of the contest, scoring twice in the bottom of the first. Kade Wallace led off the inning with a single then advanced to third on a Grant Schmidt's double into the left field corner. Corbin Truslow followed with a double that dropped between the second baseman and right fielder, driving in Wallace. Schmidt later scored on Ed Scott's sacrifice fly.

The two runs came after starting pitcher Jake Campbell worked out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the top of the first.

Rogers State scored a run with two outs in the second but the Tigers answered with a run in the bottom of the inning when Angeron scored on a Conner Kessler sacrifice fly.

The HIllcats scored two runs in the fourth to tie the game at 3-3 but again the Tigers answered after Schmidt and Truslow worked back-to-back walks. After advancing to third on a fielder's choice, Schmidt scampered home on a sharp liner back up the middle from Jacob Bouzide. Tyler Olson rached on an error allowing Ed Scott to score from third. The Hillcats took their first lead of the game off the Tiger bullpen, scoring four runs on three hits and one error in the top of the sixth to take a 7-5 lead.

The Tigers had chances to draw closer in the following innings, stranding four in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.&nbsp;

Jacob Ensz&nbsp;silenced the Hillcat bats, allowing just one baserunner after the sixth inning. Starter Jake Campbell&nbsp;allowed three runs on 11 hits and two walks over 5.0 innings of work and did not figure in the decision. The redshirt-freshman struck out five batters. Brayden Smith&nbsp;(0-1) gave up three runs (two earned) on two hits with one walk over 1/3 innings of relief and suffered the loss. Ensz tossed the final 3 2/3 innings, giving up one unearned run on two hits and zero walks while striking out three. The Tigers and Hillcats will wrap up the series with a doubleheader Saturday beginning at noon at Larks Park.

WEST LAFEYETTE, Ind.—The Wichita State men's basketball team dropped its First Four matchup of the NCAA Tournament, 53-52, to Drake on Thursday night inside of Mackey Arena. The game came down to the final shot for the second consecutive game. Alterique Gilbert's&nbsp;last-second attempt fell to the floor as time expired. The Shockers had a final shot after it looked unlikely they would have the chance to hoist a shot.&nbsp; With 21 seconds remaining, Drake's Joseph Yesufu knocked down a pair of free throws to bring the Bulldogs' lead to four. After the ensuing Shocker possession ended in a miss,&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5697">Dexter Dennis</a>&nbsp;stole a pass and knocked down a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to just one with 8 seconds to go. Yesufu had a chance to extend Drake's lead, but missed the front end of a one-and-one opportunity. Gilbert got a pass off a&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5701">Morris Udeze</a>&nbsp;rebound and hoisted a deep 3, but it didn't fall. COACH BROWN:&nbsp;Want to give Drake all the credit. They played great tonight. They defended at a high level. We were only able to get 52 points. I thought we defended at a high level as well, holding them to 53.

I thought the key to the game was we missed free throws. We probably missed eight to 10 free throws. We didn't do a good job of sticking our landing on rebounds. Like we would check them out, would have a good stop. And all of a sudden the ball would bounce out of bounds and it would be their ball. So that happened eight to ten times.

We tried to keep going to go to our big, inside. He did a great job scoring tonight. They did a great job on Tyson just basically like a box and one, not allowing him to get the ball. But I give them all the credit. They played well.

Q.&nbsp;Coach, that's obviously a tough way to lose. But how quickly can you get in these guys' ears to try to look back on how proud of them you are and what they were able to achieve in an improbable year?

COACH BROWN: Already did it. I went to the locker room. I didn't even talk about the game. I said, man, I'm so proud of you guys. You were picked 7th. You won the AAC. You're one of the 68 teams to make it to the conference tournament. I'm just proud of you.

What I would like you guys to do is continue to do the right things on and off the court, take care of your academics, give a week off, maybe two weeks. And when we come back, time to get bigger and stronger, get better on the basketball floor and get ready for next year. I told them I was proud of them. Great effort. Just didn't get it done tonight.

Q.&nbsp;What do you think of being part of a really historic night in NCAA Tournament history?

COACH BROWN: Oh, I'm excited about that, being part of a historic history in the NCAA Tournament.

Q.&nbsp;What was Drake able to do to kind of limit obviously&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5698">Tyson Etienne</a>? Only had one point. And what was the frustrations there?

COACH BROWN: They did a good job of staying with him. He missed a couple of shots. We didn't do a good job of getting him open. But we went inside to our big boy. I think the problem was in the game, again, we missed the free throws and we didn't get those rebounds when we needed to.

They did a great job on Tyson, slowing him down. But Tyson also did a good job on their 2 guard. That was the difference in the game.

Q.&nbsp;We've talked about the free throws and defensive rebounding recently. Does that make it more frustrating that those things are ultimately what ended the season?

COACH BROWN: Yeah, I'm glad you noticed that, too. It was the free throws. We didn't do a good job making free throws. And it wasn't that we wasn't rebounding. We would get the rebound, we'd get bumped a little bit -- they were the more physical team -- and the ball would go out of bounds on us. We didn't do a good job on that. We had to give up at least eight of them like that. When you give up second possessions like that, the team usually makes a basket, and they did a good job.

Q.&nbsp;Obviously Alterique missed that shot. He's had a great college career. What has he meant to your program this year?

COACH BROWN: He's meant everything to me, the fact that the kid transferred from UConn. He had never made it to postseason. For the most part he was injured. This has been the first year he's played in every game. He took care of his body. He did a great job. And he made my life easier.

Anytime you've got a point guard that can get the ball up the floor, get you into every set, it makes the head coach's life easy. He did a great job of getting us in everything. He ran the basketball team. He scored when he needed to.

He had a positive attitude. And he was a leader in the locker room. So I'm really excited about having him here this year and I'm just so thankful to have him for this year.

Q.&nbsp;You mentioned Mo. Just how key was he down low? What allowed him to have so much success, a career high for him?

COACH BROWN: Morris can score the basketball. And at the end of the game I like to go dribble drive. But I didn't want to do that. I wanted to make sure we were executing and getting the ball to a guy that could score. And every time we threw it in there he scored it.

Just our entire team, we didn't make free throws like we needed to. We would get up 11 points in the first half, miss a couple of free throws. The second half it was the same thing. I think we got up 11 in the second half. Just didn't do a good job of rebounding and making free throws.

Q.&nbsp;You mentioned it there, does it sting a little more knowing that you guys did build up those two double-digit leads in each half? And it seemed like you played pretty well in the first 30 minutes but ended up losing. Did that seem more --

COACH BROWN: We just let them hang around. In the first half, we got up 11, had a couple turnovers and they made a few shots. Even though we went into the half with a one-point lead we came out the second half, we put the first half behind us. We got a 10-, 11-point lead in the second half. And we just didn't do a good job. They stepped up. They made some 3s. They hit some timely baskets. And they were the better team tonight.

Q.&nbsp;I don't know if you have any insight to the future of the seniors with the oddity of the year but you guys will have a lot coming back either way. Do you know what the seniors are thinking right now? And even with that or without it, how excited are you to have so much youth and so much coming back next year?

COACH BROWN: I'm excited about our team coming back next year. Another year to work with them. Another year to get better. Next year we can concentrate on getting bigger and stronger. And in the summertime we don't have to work on all our sets because now they know them. So we can do a lot of skill development where guys can get better and better, dribbling with their left-hand, dribbling with their right. A guy that may not be a great shooter now during the summertime, he can work to become a better shooter.

I welcome our seniors back but again those kids, they want to go play professional ball. I hope they get the opportunity to do that. If they want to come back, they're more than welcome. But if they decide to leave we've just got to go out and recruit two good players. We've got a lot of guys that we've been following and chasing this year. But we welcome them back and I want them back. And that's just -- we'll sit down and talk to them when we get back. We'll give them a week off and then we'll sit back and talk to them after that.

Q.&nbsp;Second straight game where you guys have a shot in the air that would have won it. Second straight with Alterique. What was going through your head this time when he got that shot off?

COACH BROWN: Well, you know, the last time we was in this same situation.&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5701">Morris Udeze</a>&nbsp;rebounded and threw it to Dexter. So this time I told Dexter to get long, to get at the top of the free-throw line, and when the ball is shot and we secure the rebound, I want you to sprint and get your feet set.

I wanted Alterique and Tyson to get at each elbow at the free-throw line. Whichever side it came off of, I wanted you to sprint up the court, they advance it to you, and we try to get to the rim as quickly as possible. We took a jump shot. They defended it well. Just didn't make it. I mean, we had to get it up.

Q.&nbsp;On defense, obviously you guys did a good job with them. What do you feel like once they got going a little later in the game, they had the string of 3-pointers, what was the difference there? What were you guys doing a good job of and what kind of changed down the stretch?

COACH BROWN: Just stepped up and made shots. We got in the little point guard. We started driving it. Had to help a little more. And all of a sudden Hemphill made some shots. The Tigers are now 2-4 on the year and 0-4 against MIAA North Division opponents, while the Lopers improve to 8-2 overall and 4-0 in divisional action. The Tigers fought tooth-and-nail with the Lopers in the opening set, leading by as many as four early on, 8-4. An 11-2 UNK run over the heart of the set was the difference in the frame. The teams traded punches for the rest of the set, but FHSU was never able to break through and regain the lead. 🏐 FHSU volleyball tripped up at No. 12 Nebraska-Kearney

Fort Hays State sophomore guards Lauryn Reither and Allison McFarren are leaving the Tiger program after two seasons with the program. 

Both announced on Twitter that they are entering the transfer portal.

Both saw limited action this season. Reither played in 21 games in 2020-21 and did see double figure minutes in the last five contests including a season-high 22 in the MIAA Tournament finals against Nebraska-Kearney. The Oklahoma City native a little over two points and one rebound per game.

McFarren, who is a Wichita native who attended Bishop Carroll HS, played in 14 games this season and averaged less than one point per contest.&nbsp;

Fort Hays State head coach Tony Hobson signed four high school seniors as part of the 2021-22 recruiting class.

🏀 FHSU's Reither, McFarren enter transfer portal

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - The Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to a $5 million contract for next season with three-time Pro Bowler Kyle Long, who will come out of retirement to help their rebuilt offensive line, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press on Wednesday night.

The Chiefs also agreed to one-year deals to keep running back Darrel Williams, linebacker Ben Niemann and defensive end Taco Charlton, sources told The AP. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the deals have not been announced.

The Chiefs tendered wide receiver Byron Pringle and offensive lineman Andrew Wylie as well.

Long, whose deal was first reported by ESPN.com, went to three consecutive Pro Bowls with the Bears before injuries derailed his promising career. First came an ankle injury in 2016, then neck, shoulder and elbow injuries that hampered him the following season. In 2018, it was a foot injury that sidelined Long midway through the season, and a hip injury during the 2019 season landed him on injured reserve for what appeared to be the final time.

But after spending last season doing studio work for CBS, Long decided to make a comeback this offseason. He had visited with the AFC West-rival Raiders before agreeing to a contract with the Chiefs.

Earlier this week, they agreed to an $80 million, five-year contract with former Patriots offensive lineman Joe Thuney, giving them a pair of former Pro Bowl selections to anchor general manager Brett Veach’s reshaped offensive line.

Kansas City was decimated by opt-outs and injuries last season and was ultimately exposed by Tampa Bay in the Super Bowl, making the boys protecting Patrick Mahomes an offseason priority. The rebuild began with releasing injured tackles Eric Fisher and Mitchell Schwartz to create salary cap space, then continued with landing Thuney for a guard spot.

Laurent Duvernay-Tardif is expected to return after opting out of last season, filling the other guard spot. But that still left the Chiefs in search of a center and two tackles. One of those jobs could belong to Lucas Niang, a third-round pick in last year’s draft who opted out of his rookie season because of the pandemic, while it’s possible Long could move to tackle. He started all 16 games on the right side for Chicago during the 2015 season.

Charlton joined the Chiefs last season after the 2017 first-round pick spent two seasons in Dallas and one in Miami. He started only 12 games during that span, but he appeared to be resurrecting his career in Kansas City, where he rotated with former Michigan teammate Frank Clark before breaking his ankle in a game against Carolina in Week 9.

Williams will get $930,000 guaranteed and up to $2.13 million on his contract, according to The Kansas City Star. The 25-year-old joined the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent in 2018 and has become a dependable change-of-pace back.

The move to tender Pringle, who would get $2.18 million next season unless another team offers a better deal, was widely expected after the former undrafted free agent had a strong season. Along with being a special teams standout, he came back from a season-ending injury in his rookie season to catch 13 passes for 160 yards and a touchdown.

Wylie has proven to be a valuable offensive lineman and the first name called when there’s been an injury up front.

BETHANY, Okla. - The Fort Hays State men's soccer team dropped a close match to Southern Nazarene on Tuesday afternoon 3-2. The Tigers scored twice within the final 20 minutes of action, but were unable to match SNU's three goals. Fort Hays State now sits at 2-1 in spring play, while Southern Nazarene improves their record to 2-1 as well.&nbsp; Down two goals late in the match, Fort Hays State finally found the back of the net in the 71st minute.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5678">Antonio De La Torre</a>&nbsp;sent a corner kick just in front of the net where&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5770">Kevin Black</a>&nbsp;cashed in on his second goal of the spring campaign. The Crimson Storm answered back with another goal just four minutes later which proved to be the difference in the match. With time running down, Black scored his second of the match off an assist from Agustin Meza to give the Tigers hope for a comeback. They had some chances late, but ultimately could not convert.&nbsp; Fort Hays State looks to get back in the win column with a neutral site match against Harding University on Saturday (Mar. 20). The Tigers and Bisons&nbsp;are set to kickoff from Claremore, Oklahoma at 3:30 pm.&nbsp; &nbsp;

⚽ Black scores two goals in Tigers loss at Southern Nazarene

Hays Wrestling Club participated in the Kansas Folkstyle State Championships last weekend at the Kansas Star Arena in Mulvane. There were 1,765 wrestlers competing from 152 teams from across the state. 

HWC had 36 wrestlers and placed 15 of these wrestlers in the top six of their respective weight classes. The club finished 14th out of the 152 teams in the team scoring.&nbsp;

Those placing included: Sarah Zimmerman - State Champion Avryn Beiker - State Champion Harley Zimmerman - State Champion Jaylee Summers - State Runner Up Holden Lind - State Runner Up Kade Simon State Runner Up Ella Schumacher - 3rd Place Chloe Hearld - 4th Place Brian Prough - 4th Place Ava Ruiz - 5th Place Sela Sumaya - 5th Place Alysa Brown - 6th Place Kinslee Newell - 6th Place Lanie Becker - 6th Place Colter Conger - 6th Place&nbsp;

The Tigers are now 3-0 on the season. The Tigers grabbed the first team point of the match by sweeping doubles play from the Warriors. 🎾 Tigers down Sterling 6-1, move to 3-0 on season

The
Western Athletic Conference has announced their all-league basketball team.
Senior Dayln Schwarz is the WAC Player of the Year and is one of three Indians
named to the first team along with juniors Jace Linenberger and Carson Kieffer.
Senior TJ Nunnery is on the second team. Alex Hutchins is the WAC Coach of the
Year.

Schwarz scored in double figures 18 times and had a pair of double-doubles. He averaged of 11.8 points and 5.7 rebounds per game.&nbsp;
