Fort Hays State Men's Basketball returns to the court on Thursday night (Feb. 3) at Newman University. Game time is set for 7:30 pm, which follows the women's contest at 5:30 pm. The Tigers enter on a four-game win streak with a record of 15-3 overall and 10-3 in the MIAA, while the Jets are 4-13 overall and 1-11 in the MIAA.
Head coach Mark Johnson is now just one win away from 400 in his 21-year career guiding the Tigers. This contest also marks the 600th game overall for FHSU under Johnson's guidance, which began in 2001-02.
Also nearing another pair of milestones is Jared Vitztum. He is now just seven points shy of 1,400 in his career, looking to become the seventh player in program history to reach that mark. He is also just four rebounds shy of climbing to fourth on the all-time list at FHSU, just four behind Rege Klitzke. Vitztum leads the team at 15.3 points and 10.0 rebounds per game.
Fort Hays State won the first meeting with Newman this season by a score of 82-57 back on December 19. The Tigers own a five-game win streak against the Jets, all since the Jets joined the MIAA for several sports in 2019-20. Newman's last win was in 2018 in a non-conference meeting in Wichita, edging FHSU by just one point. FHSU has won 10 of the last 11 meetings overall and won the last two meetings between the teams in Wichita.
Kaleb Hammeke (15.1) and Nyjee Wright (11.8) join Vitztum in averaging double figures in scoring. Hammeke and Wright are combining to shoot 45.5 percent beyond the arc with 66 made 3-pointers between the two.
Vitztum led the Tigers in scoring and rebounding during the first meeting of the season with the Jets, producing a double-double of 21 points and 12 rebounds. Hammeke had 17, while Wright and Gabe Pieschl each had 10.
