🏀TMP girls cruise; boys rally for wins at Norton

NORTON – The TMP-Marian boys and girls basketball teams returned to Mid-Continent League play Thursday with a doubleheader sweep of the Bluejays on the road in Norton.

Girls:TMP 62, Norton 44
The TMP Lady Monarchs opened the game on a 16-4 run and led wire-to-wire Thursday on their way to a 62-44 win over the Norton Lady Jays.

TMP’s Emilee Lane scored 10 first quarter points as the Monarchs (16-3, 9-1 MCL) outscored Norton 21-9 in the first period.

Sophia Balthazor knocked down a pair of 3-pointers in the quarter and Jaci VonLintel added five more first quarter points as TMP built a 12-point lead.

The Monarchs continue to extend their lead into the second quarter with a 12-6 run to take a 33-15 lead.

They finished the quarter on a 7-2 run and led at halftime 40-21.

TMP took their largest lead of the game coming out of the halftime break on a Megan Hamel field goal at 43-21.

After Norton ( 5-14, 3-7) cut the lead to 17 points Balthazor scored 13 straight for TMP to end the third quarter and open the fourth quarter as the Monarchs secure the 62-44 victory.

Sophia Balthazor led all scorers with 23 points. Jaci VonLintel added 15 points and Emilee Lane chipped in 13 points and 10 rebounds. With the 10 rebounds she goes over 700 rebounds for her career.

Boys: TMP 46, Norton 44 OT
The TMP boys improved to 2-0 in overtime this season as they rallied from down 15-points in the first half in a 46-44 win over the Norton Bluejays.

The Monarchs (14-3, 9-0) were able to keep it close in the opening part of the first quarter thanks to 3-pointers for Gavin Unrein and Kenton Ginther that cut the Norton lead to 9-8.

The Bluejays (12-6, 8-1) were able to string together a 14-0 run to end the first quarter and big the second on a pair of Eli Jones 3-pointers for a 23-8 Norton lead.

TMP’s Bryce Seib scored all six points in the second quarter for the Monarchs that cut the deficit to nine at 23-14 at halftime.

After trailing by nine to open the third quarter TMP outscored TMP 12-3 to end the third quarter and begin the fourth quarter tying the game at 34.

The two teams traded the lead back-and-forth twice at the end of regulation and three more in overtime before TMP’s Dylan Werth got free with just four seconds left for a layup to put TMP up 46-44.

Dylan Werth led all scorers with 14 points and nine rebounds. Bryce Seib scored nine and Kade Harris and Gavin Unrein added eight points each.

The Monarchs are now the lone upbeat team in MCL play with one more league game set for Tuesday at Plainville.
