HOLCOMB - TMP-Marian's seventh inning rally fell one run short Friday, losing game two of their doubleheader in Holcomb 7-6. The Longhorns raced out to an early three-run lead and won the opener 4-1.
TMP-Marian has lost three of its last four and is now 3-3 on the season.
Game 1: Holcomb 4, TMP-Marian 1
The Longhorns scored a run in the first and two in the second which proved to be all they would need for the win. They added one more in the fifth before the Monarchs scored on a Jaci VonLintel homer in the sixth.
Hannah Garcia had the only other hit for TMP on a third inning single. The Monarchs struck out 12 times.
Madison Augustine allowed one earned run on four hits with four strikeouts and three walks.
Game 2: Holcomb 7, TMP-Marian 6
The Monarchs rallied with two in the top of the seventh and had the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position before a groundout ended the game.
TMP-Marian grabbed the early lead, scoring four in the top of the first. Their first five batters all reached base. After Halle Dreiling and Hannah Garcia walked, Brooke Koeningsman tripled to give the Monarchs a 2-0 lead. Jaci VonLintel followed with an RBI double to push the lead to 3-0. TMP scored the fourth run on an inning-ending double play.
The Longhorns scored a run in the bottom of the first then tied the game with three in the third. They would take the lead on a solo homer in the fifth and lead 7-4 heading into the seventh.
TMP loaded the bases in the seventh with no outs. After Sophie Allen singled, Taylor Marvin and Halle Dreiling were both hit by pitches. Hannah Garcia reached on a error on a fly ball to right which scored a run. Jaci VonLintel drove in the second run on a groundout but Alexa Ryersee's groundout to to second ended the game.
Augustine went the distance in the circle allowing only two earned runs on five hits with three strikeouts and five walks.
