The Tigers had a lead for a good portion of the first set and saw their lead reach five at 14-9. Gonzaga carried a No. 1 ranking all last season before falling a win short of becoming college basketball’s first unbeaten national champion in 45 years.

Mark Few’s Bulldogs start this season in the same position, hoping to complete that final step this time around.

The Zags were the runaway top choice in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-basketball-poll">The Associated Press Top 25 men’s college basketball preseason poll released Monday</a>. They earned 55 of 63 first-place votes to easily outdistance No. 2 UCLA, which earned the other eight. Kansas, Villanova and Texas rounded out the top five, while reigning national champion Baylor checked in at No. 8.

The Zags have accomplished just about every milestone possible in 23 years under Few other than cutting down the nets on the final Monday night of the season. They came close to completing the first unbeaten run since 1976 last year with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/mark-few-basketball-gonzaga-bulldogs-mens-basketball-march-madness-mens-college-basketball-a7d5e61dd80bb263ec8660745c231bcc">a wire-to-wire No. 1 team</a>, only&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/baylor-win-defeat-gonzaga-1st-ncaa-basketball-championship-1d53c12b04f50a9ea50110e787cc6567">to fall to the Bears in a one-sided final</a>&nbsp;in Indianapolis.

“It is quite an honor to be selected preseason No. 1 for the second consecutive year,” Few said in a statement to the AP. “Our returning players realize the challenge of playing up to that level all year and look forward to it.”

Gonzaga lost AP All-Americans Corey Kispert and Jalen Suggs to the NBA, but second-team selection Drew Timme (19.0 points, 7.0 rebounds) and starting guard Andrew Nembhard return. The Zags also bring in a top recruiting class featuring the nation’s No. 1 overall recruit in 7-footer Chet Holmgren and a five-star guard in Hunter Sallis.

Going back to the 2019-20 season, the Zags have now been ranked in the top three for 32 straight polls, with 22 of those at No. 1.

Second-year coach Mick Cronin has UCLA on a fast climb.

Leading scorer Johnny Juzang (16.0 ppg) headlines a Bruins roster that returns nearly intact after last year’s run from the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/gabe-brown-michigan-jaylen-clark-jaime-jaquez-joshua-langford-253afbd685b3439debfa507a373a14e3">First Four</a>&nbsp;to the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/alabama-alabama-crimson-tide-mens-basketball-jaime-jaquez-johnny-juzang-cody-riley-51a8fbd2f683f2c53be1228aa27541d6">Final Four</a>, where they lost to Gonzaga on a halfcourt shot&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/sports-gonzaga-bulldogs-mens-basketball-larry-bird-jalen-suggs-mens-college-basketball-4d529cdaf1e2934447fe70353b324e55">in an overtime classic</a>.

They are starting with their first top-10 preseason ranking since 2009 and their first top-10 ranking in any AP poll since spending 13 weeks there during the 2016-17 season.

“If we taught anybody anything last year,,” Cronin said this month, “your seed or your ranking does not matter come tournament time.”

Kansas has the program’s 10th straight preseason top-10 ranking, followed by the Wildcats and Longhorns, who open their first season under Chris Beard with the program’s highest preseason ranking since 2010.

Baylor has a second straight top-10 preseason ranking despite losing four starters from last year’s title winner, including AP All-Americans Jared Butler and Davion Mitchell. The Bears will try to join Duke (1991-92) and Florida (2006-07) as the only schools to win consecutive titles since UCLA’s run of seven straight from 1967-73.

“As we’ve talked with our team,,” Baylor coach Scott Drew said, “we have a unique opportunity.”

Duke and Kentucky are starting with their typically high rankings after seasons unlike many in their tradition-rich histories.

The ninth-ranked Blue Devils are playing the final season under retiring Hall of Fame coach Mike Krzyzewski. They’re coming off a 13-11 season that included&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/duke-acc-tournament-positive-covid-ends-streak-1730784a03b97e0bcc2aad536cd9ac0b">missing the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1995</a>.

The 10th-ranked Wildcats are right behind them after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iverson-molinar-basketball-john-calipari-coronavirus-pandemic-kentucky-eb5cb979fdfd63c3ba9e32cd57cc64ed">a 9-16 season</a>, the program’s first losing record since 1988-89.

Then there’s North Carolina, which made the NCAA Tournament but was inconsistent all season and out of the Top 25 before Christmas. The Tar Heels open at No. 19 in their&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nba-dean-smith-roy-williams-basketball-north-carolina-732ef309fa3097e263176240078f9914">first season under Hubert Davis</a>, promoted after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/roy-williams-retires-after-33-years-kansas-tar-heels-a22a60268056f999da69f39764c74ebd">the retirement of Hall of Famer Roy Williams in April.</a>

St. Bonaventure is ranked for the first time in more than five decades. The Bonnies from the Atlantic 10 are No. 23, marking the first time they have been ranked since January 1971. That season was also the last time the program was ranked in the preseason (No. 20).

The Big Ten and Southeastern conferences have a national-best five ranked teams each.

The Big Ten has No. 6 Michigan, No. 7 Purdue, No. 11 Illinois, No. 17 Ohio State and No. 21 Maryland. The SEC has No. 14 Alabama, No. 16 Arkansas, No. 18 Tennessee and No. 22 Auburn joining Kentucky.

The ACC is next up with four, with No. 20 Florida State and No. 25 Virginia joining Duke and UNC. The Big 12 has its Kansas-Texas-Baylor trio, while the Pac-12 (UCLA and No. 13 Oregon), Big East (Villanova and No. 24 Connecticut) and American Athletic Conference (No. 12 Memphis and No. 15 Houston) are the others with multiple Top 25 teams.

The top unranked teams are all from power conferences, headlined by Michigan State as the leading vote-getter. DENVER (AP) — Derek Carr sliced up the Denver defense for 341 yards and two touchdowns, Maxx Crosby made three sacks and the Las Vegas Raiders started the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/gruden-out-raiders-coach-offensive-emails-a214abdc3fd624dec17045db93080222">post-Jon Gruden era&nbsp;</a>with a 34-24 thrashing of the bewildered Broncos on Sunday.

The Raiders (4-2) gave longtime special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia a win in his debut as interim head coach and offensive coordinator Greg Olson was masterful in his first play-calling duties for Las Vegas since Carr's rookie season in 2014.

The Raiders began by ending an 11-game streak without a score on their opening drive. They never let up, burning the Broncos' beleaguered secondary that couldn't keep up with Carr and his targets.

Nor could Denver's deficient offense keep pace. Teddy Bridgewater threw a season-high three interceptions and lost a fumble, negating his 334 yards passing and three TDs.

The Broncos (3-3) lost their third consecutive game, but the other defeats came at the hands of Ravens and Steelers and their veteran head coaches John Harbaugh and Mike Tomlin.

This one had to sting coach Vic Fangio, whose Broncos have a short week before a Thursday night game at Cleveland with the possibility they'll fall below .500 just 25 days after starting 3-0.

Moreover, the Broncos’ humiliation came on a day they inducted former coach&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/arniestapleton/status/1449802734757203975?s=20">Mike Shanahan</a>&nbsp;into their Ring of Fame and honored Steve Atwater’s long-awaited entrance into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The Raiders appeared to have a season on the brink after Gruden resigned Monday night when it was revealed emails he sent before being hired in 2018 contained racist, homophobic and misogynistic comments directed at several people in the NFL.

But the Raiders didn't seem one bit bothered by the chaos as they moved into a tie atop the AFC West with the Chargers, who were throttled 34-6 by Baltimore.

Crosby was in on four sacks — he had two himself and two he shared — one of which came just before halftime, right after the Raiders took a 17-7 lead on Carr's 31-yard touchdown toss to running back Kenyon Drake. Linebacker Alexander Johnson never turned his head as Drake hauled in the pass and&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Raiders/status/1449855669742407688?s=20">tiptoed down the Raiders sideline</a>, capping a five-play 82-yard drive that took just 31 seconds.

Drake's 18-yard touchdown run made it 24-7 in the third quarter, essentially ending any doubt Bisaccia's head coaching debut after spending two decades as a special teams coordinator would be a success.

Las Vegas opened the scoring on a 48-yard pass from&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Raiders/status/1449835781296590853?s=20">Carr to Henry Ruggs III</a>, who sped past cornerback Ronald Darby, playing for the first time since pulling a hamstring in the opener. The Raiders failed to score on their first possession in the previous 11 games for the longest active drought in the NFL.

The Broncos had gone even longer without scoring a TD on their first possession, the last one coming on Dec. 8, 2019, against Houston. They ended their 24-game streak when&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Broncos/status/1449838250735009794?s=20">Bridgewater found Tim Patrick</a>&nbsp;on a 23-yard pass to tie it.

Daniel Carlson's 50-yard field goal put Las Vegas up 10-7, but he hit the right upright on a 43-yarder as the Raiders failed to capitalize on cornerback Brandon Facyson's interception at midfield.

The Raiders didn't fritter away linebacker Denzel Perryman's recovery of Bridgewater's fumble in the second half. They cashed in on Josh Jacobs' 3-yard touchdown jaunt after Ruggs hauled in a 40-yard pass at the Denver 4 with Darby flailing at the floater.

The Broncos challenged the catch but lost — just as they were denied their challenge when they argued Noah Fant came down in the end zone with a 14-yard reception that would have pulled them within seven points in the third quarter.

Raiders LB Nick Kwiatkoski (foot) went out in the first half and S Roderic Teamer (shoulder) early in the fourth period. MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Breece Hall rushed for 197 yards and two touchdowns and Brock Purdy was an efficient 22-of-25 for 208 yards and a score as Iowa State downed Kansas State 33-20 Saturday night.

The Cyclones gained 210 yards on the ground and 208 yards through the air.

“It always starts with (balance) for us,” Iowa State coach Matt Campbell said, “the ability to create a running game somehow, someway, and the ability to use our passing game to open up the running game.

“So much credit goes to our quarterback tonight. The way he played with poise, I really thought he did a phenomenal job of distributing the football.”

The Wildcats had won 15 of the last 16 games in Manhattan. The teams split the last four meetings in the series, with each team winning two home games. Prior to that, K-State had won 10 straight games in the series.

K-State quarterback Skylar Thompson was 15-of-23 for 206 yards and two touchdowns and one interception.

Hall has now rushed for a touchdown in 18 straight games, a Big 12 record and the fifth longest streak in FBS since 1996.

Hall rushed 75 yards for a touchdown on the opening play of the game, finding a hole on the right side of the offensive line and racing untouched until the 10-yard line, where he eluded a defender diving for his feet.

“It was blocked perfectly,” Hall said. “I didn’t really have to do much but find a hole and run. I knew it was going to be a big run, because the crowd was real loud but it got quiet suddenly. I knew I would score the touchdown.”

The touchdown came after Iowa State won the coin flip and chose to receive.

“We were just trying to gain some momentum,” Campbell said. “This is such a great place to play college football. I thought maybe the one thing that could swing it for us was to put together a positive drive on the first drive. Obviously, a great play by Breece.”

After Greg Eisworth intercepted Thompson, Andrew Mevis hit a 44-yard field goal to give Iowa State a 10-0 lead.

After K-State converted a second-and-23 for a first down, Thompson found Phillip Brooks for a 40-yard touchdown pass to get the Cats on the board.

Kansas State missed a chance to tie the score on a 33-yard field goal when Taiten Winkel missed wide right. Iowa State responded with a 14-play, 80-yard drive capped by Hall’s 1-yard run. Mevis hit a 41-yard field goal as time expired to take a 20-7 lead to the half.

Iowa State started the second half with an 18-play, 93-yard drive that took more than 10 minutes off the clock. Purdy hit Sean Shaw in the front corner of the end zone for an 11-yard touchdown to close the drive.

“Kansas State brought the heat, but the O-line did a great job,” Purdy said. “I think we were really prepared for (K-State’s game plan), and the guys up front went to work.

“At the end (of that drive), I thought, ‘That’s pretty good for us, just doing our job.’ It just came down to converting on third down.”

The Bronchos held the Tigers scoreless in the second half, while scoring 14 points to take the lead and win by 10. UCO moved to 4-3 on the season, while FHSU is now 3-4. The Bronchos snapped a five-game losing skid to the Tigers with their win. The Bronchos held the Tigers to their second-lowest amount of total yards this season at 347. UCO countered with 422 yards of total offense. Keats Calhoon led the Broncho passing game with 223 yards, completing 15-of-24 passes. Jayce Gardner led the Bronchos in rushing with 94 of his team's 193 yards on the ground and Markiese King had 134 receiving yards on five catches.

Both teams scored on their first drives of the game. The Bronchos held the Tigers scoreless in the second half, while scoring 14 points to take the lead and win by 10. UCO moved to 4-3 on the season, while FHSU is now 3-4. The Bronchos snapped a five-game losing skid to the Tigers with their win. The Bronchos held the Tigers to their second-lowest amount of total yards this season at 347. UCO countered with 422 yards of total offense. Keats Calhoon led the Broncho passing game with 223 yards, completing 15-of-24 passes. 🏈 Tigers fall at home to Bronchos

LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Henry Colombi threw for a touchdown, ran for another as Texas Tech had four rushing touchdowns in a 41-14 win over Kansas on Saturday afternoon.

Colombi was 14-for-20 passing for 124 yards and added 35 rushing yards while Jason Bean was 11-for-21 passing for 80 yards and one interception for Kansas.

“I think it was important for us to come out here and execute today and we did it on both sides of the ball," Colombi said. "Every position played well today and I think we spread the ball around.”

Texas Tech (5-2, 2-2 Big 12 Conference) had three rushing touchdowns — by Colombi, Erik Ezukanma and Myles Price to lead 24-0 at halftime. Donovan Smith added a rushing touchdown in the third quarter.

“Proud of guys for coming on the road and playing a very disciplined football game," Texas Tech head coach Matt Wells said. "I think the key was starting fast and jumped out and played well on both sides.”

The past two seasons combined, this matchup had been decided by a total of six points. Texas Tech showed this year there’s still a big difference between the programs. The Raiders held Kansas to 20 passing yards and only four first downs in the first half.

Texas Tech had 438 yards with 244 of those coming on the ground. Sarodorick Thompson ran for 83 yards and Ezukanma had 76 receiving yards.

The Jayhawks (1-5, 0-3) Luke Grimm had 33 receiving yards and a touchdown and Devin Neal ran for 54 yards.

The Red Raiders were spectacular on third downs going 9-for-11 and held Kansas to 5-for-13. They were also a perfect 6-for-6 in the red zone and Kansas was 2-for-2.

“That was disappointing,” Kansas head coach Lance Leipold. “We missed a field goal in the second quarter, and we turned the ball over. We show flashes, but our third down situations are not good. I thought we would’ve played better today.”

One bright spot for Kansas happened in the final minute when they scored two touchdowns. Miles Kendrick relieved Bean at quarterback and found Grimm for a 14-yard touchdown pass and then Lawrence Arnold for a 13-yard touchdown. Kendrick went 4-for-7 for 48 yards in the final drives of the game.

The Jayhawks forced two turnovers and committed one.

“We need to stack success and we need to do everything we can to take advantage of the opportunity we have against Kansas State next week," Wells said.

Kansas: The Jayhawks have been competitive against the Red Raiders recently, but were outmatched this season. Their last conference win was against Texas Tech two years ago.

Texas Tech: The Red Raiders dominated from the first possession and are now just one win away from being bowl eligible.

HAYS - 1994. That last time Hays High volleyball won the Western Athletic Conference was 1994. Following the conference tournament Saturday, the last time the Indians have won the conference title is 2021.

Hays broke a 27 year drought with a 3-1 finish at the tournament they hosted. The Indians opened with win over Garden City 25-22, 25-16. They then beat Liberal 26-24, 25-20.

After a one match break, Hays beat Great Bend 25-21, 25-15 to move to 3-0 on the day. Dodge City prevented the Indians from a perfect day with a three set win 18-25, 26-24, 25.-23.

Liberal also went 3-1 with wins over Dodge City, Garden City and Great Bend, but due to the head-to-head tiebreaker, the Indians were crowned Western Athletic Conference Champions.

Coach Shannon Funk said "This was a goal for this team from day one. The girls stayed focused all week, preparing for this day, even through all the distractions of homecoming week. They knew what they had to do and they executed the game plan so well. I am very proud of them!"

🏐 Hays High volleyball ends long drought with WAC title

&nbsp; HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State volleyball team completed a weekend sweep after defeating Pittsburg State in straight sets on Saturday, 25-23, 25-21, 25-23. The Tigers are now 10-10 on the year and 4-7 in MIAA play, while Pittsburg State dips to 11-8 overall and 5-6 in conference action. Fort Hays State controlled the match almost all afternoon, with Pittsburg State only holding the lead once early in the second set. The Tigers totaled 46 kills and posted an attack percentage of .219 on the day while holding PSU to a .128 swing rate thanks to nine total blocks. The Tigers looked to middle hitters&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6106">Emily Ellis</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6104">Morgan Christiansen</a>&nbsp;early and often in the match, with the duo combining for six kills and four blocks in the opening set alone before finishing the match with 21 kills and nine blocks. After totaling 12 kills in Friday's sweep of Missouri Southern, Christiansen again led the team with 15 kills alongside five blocks (one solo) on Saturday. The Lincoln, Neb. native posted an incredibly efficient .591 attack percentage for the week thanks to 27 kills and just one error on 44 attempts. Fort Hays State raced out to a 4-0 lead before adding three of the next four to quickly lead 7-1 in the opening set, prompting a PSU timeout. The Gorillas managed to close within four midway through the set before a 6-1 run stretched the lead to nine, 17-8. Fort Hays State appeared to be running away with the set, up 22-15, before the Gorillas stormed back with an 8-2 run to close within one, 24-23. But Ellis took care of business and slammed the door, delivering a kill off a pass from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6108">Elysia Glowacz</a>&nbsp;to secure the set. Pittsburg State led by as many as three early in the second set before FHSU stormed in front for good when an eight-point lead turned a 10-8 deficit into a 16-10 advantage. The visitors closed within three late in the set, but they ran out of time after Christiansen delivered the final kill, clinching the set 25-21. The Tigers came out of the locker room on a mission, scoring the first five points to take complete control.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6111">Isabelle Reynolds</a>&nbsp;opened the set with a kill before&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6208">Claire Olson</a>&nbsp;tallied kills on back-to-back rallies. Reynolds capped off the run with a service ace, prompting a Gorilla timeout. Fort Hays State steadily built the lead up to nine, 21-12, but the visitors had one final push in them. Pittsburg State stormed back within one with a 9-1 run, including seven-straight points to make the score 22-21. The teams traded points the rest of the way, with&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6107">Mykah Eshbaugh</a>&nbsp;delivering the final blow to seal a 25-23 third-set victory. Reynolds was second on the team with seven kills while four Tigers added six kills, including Eshbaugh, Ellis, Olson and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6112">Riley Tinder</a>. Five of Olson's six kills came in the third set. Glowacz led the Tigers with 24 assists and added seven digs, with&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6365">Olivia Hessman</a>&nbsp;totaling 17 assists and seven digs. &nbsp; HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State volleyball team completed a weekend sweep after defeating Pittsburg State in straight sets on Saturday, 25-23, 25-21, 25-23. The Tigers are now 10-10 on the year and 4-7 in MIAA play, while Pittsburg State dips to 11-8 overall and 5-6 in conference action. Fort Hays State controlled the match almost all afternoon, with Pittsburg State only holding the lead once early in the second set. The Tigers totaled 46 kills and posted an attack percentage of .219 on the day while holding PSU to a .128 swing rate thanks to nine total blocks. The Tigers looked to middle hitters&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6106">Emily Ellis</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6104">Morgan Christiansen</a>&nbsp;early and often in the match, with the duo combining for six kills and four blocks in the opening set alone before finishing the match with 21 kills and nine blocks. After totaling 12 kills in Friday's sweep of Missouri Southern, Christiansen again led the team with 15 kills alongside five blocks (one solo) on Saturday. The Lincoln, Neb. native posted an incredibly efficient .591 attack percentage for the week thanks to 27 kills and just one error on 44 attempts. Fort Hays State raced out to a 4-0 lead before adding three of the next four to quickly lead 7-1 in the opening set, prompting a PSU timeout. The Gorillas managed to close within four midway through the set before a 6-1 run stretched the lead to nine, 17-8. Fort Hays State appeared to be running away with the set, up 22-15, before the Gorillas stormed back with an 8-2 run to close within one, 24-23. But Ellis took care of business and slammed the door, delivering a kill off a pass from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6108">Elysia Glowacz</a>&nbsp;to secure the set. Pittsburg State led by as many as three early in the second set before FHSU stormed in front for good when an eight-point lead turned a 10-8 deficit into a 16-10 advantage. The visitors closed within three late in the set, but they ran out of time after Christiansen delivered the final kill, clinching the set 25-21. CIMARRON – First place in 2A district number seven was on
the line Friday night in Cimarron between TMP-Marian and the Bluejays and went
all was said and done it was the Bluejays coming away with the 11-8 win.

Friday’s matchup featured on of the top offenses in 2A in
Cimarron (6-1) and the top scoring defense in 2A, TMP (5-2) and it would not disappoint.

After both teams were forced to punt on their opening possession
Cimarron was able to take advantage of a short field and put together a
six-play, 49-yard drive that resulted in a 16-yard touchdown pass giving
Cimarron an 8-0 after the two-point conversion.

The touchdown ended TMP’s streak of four straight shutouts
and was the first points allowed to a 2A opponent this year for TMP. 

After the touchdown by Cimarron, with just over a minute
left in the first quarter, both team’s defenses settled in for an 8-0 Bluejays
lead at halftime. 

TMP on the was forced to punt on their first four drives of
the game and didn’t get on the scoreboard until late in the third quarter when
Bryce Seib’s two-yard touchdown run capped off a 12-play 48-yard drive that
tied the game after the two-point conversion with a little more than three and
a half minutes left in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter TMP’s Griffin Schumacher recorded his
first career interception that gave the Monarchs the ball inside the Cimarron
30-yard line but the drive stalled and TMP kicked Jace Wentling just missed a
46-yard field goal that would have given the Monarchs the lead with under nine
minutes to play.

After forcing a Cimarron punt TMP got the ball back with just
over seven minutes to go but an interception and return to the TMP 38-yard line
by Cimarron’s Braxton Harrison set the Bluejays up with a great chance to take
the lead.

Harrison’s 28-yard field goal with 2:44 left in the game put
Cimarron on top 11-8.

They then held off a late TMP drive on their way to the
three-point win.

TMP held Cimarron to just 151 total yards of offense while the
Monarchs were limited to just 159 total yards. 

TMP's Bryce Seib rushed for a game-high 64-yards on 18 carries.

Cimarron's Braxton Harrison was the game's leading passer going 6-for-13 for 92 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

The Monarchs host Lakin Friday night to close out the regular season needing a win to clinch a first-round home game in week nine.
