Eleven of those performances rank among the top 25 nationally. The Tigers still have four performances among the Top 5 nationally. Fort Hays State Women's Basketball nudged up one spot in both the D2SIDA and WBCA National Polls, the latest editions released on Tuesday (Feb. 1). The Tigers are now No. 5 in the D2SIDA Poll and No. 6 in the WBCA Poll. They received one first-place vote in the D2SIDA poll. The Tigers (17-2, 11-2 MIAA) went 1-0 last week, picking up a big win over nationally ranked Nebraska-Kearney on the road. The Lopers remained in the WBCA Top 25, but dipped to the receiving votes list in the D2SIDA poll. Missouri Western is also among the Top 25 of the WBCA poll. The rest of the field was out of the competition before Stanley even attempted his first jump. He is currently ranked first on the NCAA DII performance chart with a season-best clearance of 17-0.75, while this week's effort would have been fourth best on the national performance list. Stanley was NCAA Division II outdoor national champion in the pole vault last year and finished fourth nationally during the indoor season.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Kansas Basketball Coaches Association has released their boys and girls state rankings for the week.

The Hays High boys jump up one spot to No. 3 in Class 5A. Kapaun Mt. Carmel remains No. 1 and Topeka West No. 2. Highland Park drops two spots to No. 4.

The TMP-Marian girls move up one in Class 3A to No. 9. Goodland holds at the No. 7 spot. Silver Lake is at the top of 3A this week, replacing Nickerson who falls to fourth.

The Trego boys stay at No. 8 and Ellinwood No. 6 in 2A boys. Smith Center remains at No. 7 in 2A girls.

The Osborne boys fall one spot to No. 4 while the Osborne girls hold at No. 6 in 1A Division I. 

The Wheatland/Grinnell boys fall to ninth and the girls stay at No. 10 in 1A Division II. The Dighton boys are sixth and Logan-Palco 10th. Central Plains remains No. 1&nbsp; in the girls poll with Golden Plains up one spot to No. 3 and St. John's-Tipton down two to ninth.

Lawrence Free State remains No. 1 and Dodge City No. 4 in Class 6A boys.&nbsp;The Dodge City and Liberal girls switch places. The Red Demons are now ranked eighth and Liberal ninth.&nbsp;

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Tom Brady, the most successful quarterback in NFL history, has retired after winning seven Super Bowls and setting numerous passing records in an unprecedented 22-year career.

“This is difficult for me to write, but here it goes: I am not going to make that competitive commitment anymore,” Brady wrote in a lengthy post on Instagram. “I have loved my NFL career, and now it is time to focus my time and energy on other things that require my attention.”

Brady has long stated his desire to spend more time with his wife, supermodel Gisele Bundchen, and three children despite still playing at the top of his game.

The 44-year-old Brady goes out after leading the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a Super Bowl title last season and NFC South championship this season.

News of Brady’s pending retirement leaked Saturday. His family and the Buccaneers denied that he had made a final decision, and he said Monday night on his SiriusXM podcast he wasn’t ready to finalize his plans.

“I’ve done a lot of reflecting the past week and have asked myself difficult questions,” Brady said in his post. “And I am so proud of what we have achieved. My teammates, coaches, fellow competitors, and fans deserve 100% of me, but right now, it’s best I leave the field of play to the next generation of dedicated and committed athletes.”

Brady thanked the Buccaneers organization, his teammates, ownership, general manager Jason Licht, coach Bruce Arians, his trainer Alex Guerrero, agents Don Yee and Steve Dubin and his family in his nine-page post. He didn’t mention the New England Patriots, where he spent his first 20 seasons and won six Super Bowls. Of course, Brady thanked the Patriots and coach Bill Belichick after he left the team to sign with the Buccaneers in March 2020.

“To the Glazer family, thank you for taking a chance on me and supporting me,” Brady said of the Bucs’ owners. “I know I was demanding at times, but you provided everything we needed to win, and your ownership was everything a player could ask for.”

Brady said he’s still figuring out how he’ll spend his time but he plans to be involved in his TB12 health and wellness company, Brady clothing line and NFT company.

Ellis High's senior wrestlers will be honored this week

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Tyrann Mathieu walked off the field in stunned disappointment, his hopes of playing in a third straight Super Bowl dashed by Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals, and spent a moment dressing in a somber Kansas City Chiefs locker room.

The time spent composing himself hardly helped Mathieu keep his emotions in check.

“I think the immature person in me would probably say, you know, we failed,” Mathieu said after a 27-24 overtime loss to the Bengals on Sunday night ended his season and, just maybe, his successful three-year run in Kansas City.

“I think the bigger person in me realizes these things aren't always possible,” he continued. “We have a lot of motivation. I know there's a lot of guys in that locker room, they're going to take this offseason personally to really get better, because we do feel like we're the best team in the NFL. But the best team doesn't always win.”

Just the best team on the day. On Sunday, that was Cincinnati.

But despite blowing a 21-3 first-half lead, and an interception by Patrick Mahomes in overtime that allowed the Bengals to set up the winning field goal, the Chiefs still accomplished plenty this season: They won their record sixth straight AFC West title, beat the Bills in the divisional round in one of the greatest finishes ever and became the first team to host four straight AFC title games.

If not for a second half to forget, a costly mistake in overtime and some poise beyond their years from Burrow and the long-downtrodden Bengals, they would be playing in a third straight Super Bowl, too.

Instead, they turned their attention Monday to an offseason filled with hope, uncertainty and, yes, frustration.

The Chiefs return most of their star players, including Mahomes, wide receiver Tyreek Hill, tight end Travis Kelce and defensive tackle Chris Jones, all of whom are signed to long-term contracts.

But Mathieu is among those players whose deals are set to expire, and the inevitable offseason turnover is sure to create a much different team for next season.

“I'm proud of these guys. You look at the season we had, to be in this game in general — it's a special group of guys that battled through adversity,” said Mahomes, who helped Chiefs to an about-face after a dismal 3-4 start to the season. “But the guys know the standard is winning the Super Bowl. When you've done that, nothing less is success.”

The Chiefs and Mathieu's representatives tried last offseason to reach an agreement on a contract extension, and both sides hope they can still work something out. But the asking price might have gone up even more given the fact that Mathieu has followed up two All-Pro nods his first two seasons in Kansas City with a third straight Pro Bowl trip.

“I've tried to be the right kind of teammate. I've tried to play my part and you know, obviously, there's always a feeling that you can make more plays," he said, “but I'm hoping it works out.”

Mathieu is but one important defensive piece hitting free agency. Defensive tackle Jarran Reed, cornerbacks Mike Hughes and Charvarius Ward, and defensive end Melvin Ingram are also on the market.

The Chiefs sent their first-round pick and three other selections to the Ravens last year for Orlando Brown Jr., who played well at left tackle this season. And while Brown is also due to hit free agency, it's unlikely that the Chiefs would let him walk after having spent so much draft capital just to acquire him.

Wide receivers Byron Pringle and Demarcus Robinson also are free agents, and the Josh Gordon experiment was a flop, so Kansas City is in the market for help at that position.

Defensive end Frank Clark has two more years left on his contract, but the his salary cap hit is more than $26 million each of those years, and the Chiefs could save a hefty amount by cutting ties this offseason. They also need to weigh his legal troubles: He was arrested twice last offseason and those issues should sort themselves out this offseason.

“Kansas City is home. I bought a house here. My daughter goes to school here. It's home,” he said. “I want to be here for the future, the rest of my career. But unfortunately, the way the business goes, things don't always happen the way you want.”

The biggest problem facing Chiefs general manager Brett Veach last offseason was fixing an offensive line decimated by injuries and dismantled by Tampa Bay in the Super Bowl. He did it with five new faces that played well all season.

There is no such glaring weakness heading into this offseason, though there are smaller holes to fill. Wide receiver is one of them, and so is defensive end, particularly if they allow Clark to leave.

The loss to Cincinnati leaves the Chiefs with the 30th overall pick in the April draft. The question now is whether they will use it. Kansas City has only used its first-round pick once in the past four years, and that was for underwhelming running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire, whose history of injuries have him on the brink of becoming a bust.

They also have one pick each in the second, third and fourth rounds, but none in the fifth or the sixth.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs followed perhaps the greatest 13 seconds in franchise history in the divisional round against the Bills with 13 seconds late in the first half of the AFC title game against Cincinnati that they'd rather just forget.

Not to mention most of the next 30 minutes and overtime.

In a loss both heartbreaking and humiliating, one of the league's prolific offenses failed to put the game away just before the break Sunday, then never reached the end zone in the second half. The Bengals took advantage of Kansas City's many mistakes to dig out of a 21-3 hole, force overtime and watch Evan McPherson drill a 31-yard field goal for a 27-24 victory, giving the long-downtrodden franchise its first conference championship in 33 years.

“It's definitely disappointing,” said Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who threw for 275 yards and three touchdowns but also had two second-half interceptions, including one in overtime that gave the Bengals the chance to drive for the win.

“With this group of guys we have,” Mahomes said, “we expect to win that game and anything less is not success.”

As the Bengals spilled off the sideline in celebration, the Chiefs slumped in their seats — a complete reversal of the previous week, when the Chiefs beat the Bills in overtime in one of the most exhilarating games in NFL history.

Making the about-face all the more shocking was that it was the Chiefs' offense that let them down.

Mahomes was 18 of 21 for 220 yards and three scores in the first half, finding Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce for big gains almost at will. His quarterback rating was nearly perfect, as was the Kansas City offense, and coach Andy Reid's team built a 21-10 lead and was 30 minutes away from a third straight trip to the Super Bowl.

The only flub came when the Chiefs had the ball first-and-goal at the Bengals 5 with — you guessed it — 13 seconds left, the exact same amount of time it took them to drive 44 yards for the field goal to force overtime against Buffalo.

This time, Mahomes threw incomplete on first down. Then he completed a short pass to Hill, who was stopped short of the goal line as the clock expired, and Kansas City squandered a chance to extend its lead.

“We were trying to score a touchdown,” Reid said, “so any way we could score a touchdown, we were trying. In hindsight, I would tell you the passes weren't working. We should try to run it. We were just trying to get in the end zone.”

It turned out to be a harbinger of the rest of the game.

The Chiefs punted on each of their first two second-half possessions. The third ended when Mahomes had a pass batted in the air and caught by 311-pound defensive tackle B.J. Hill, setting up Joe Burrow's touchdown pass to Ja'Marr Chase and the ensuing 2-point conversion that tied the game 21-all heading to the fourth quarter.

Then the Chiefs' offensive line, which had run over the Bengals in the first half, began letting them down. Hill and Trey Hendrickson combined on a sack to force a three-and-out, then Hendrickson had a sack of his own to force another three-and-out, that one giving the Bengals an opportunity to march downfield for a go-ahead field goal.

The Chiefs finally showed some resolve, answering 21 straight points by Cincinnati with a long drive of their own. But the red zone left them seeing red one more time: With first-and-goal and less than 2 minutes left, Jerick McKinnon was stuffed and Mahomes was sacked by Sam Hubbard on back-to-back plays.

The Chiefs were fortunate that Harrison Butker, whose 49-yarder sent the Chiefs to overtime with Buffalo, calmly drilled another one from 44 yards at the opposite end of the field to keep their Super Bowl hopes alive.

And it appeared fate was shining on the Chiefs once again when backup Bengals quarterback Brandon Allen called heads and the coin flip landed tails — the exact opposite result of the previous week, when Bills quarterback Josh Allen called tails and the Chiefs took the only possession of overtime for the winning score.

That's where the similarities ended, though.

Mahomes threw an incomplete pass, then nearly had a pass picked by Bengals cornerback Eli Apple, before launching a throw toward Hill down the sideline. The ball was batted in the air by Jessie Bates III, who was perfectly position to make the play, and into the waiting hands of Bengals safety Vonn Bell.

Burrow and the Bengals didn't give Kansas City another chance.

With the game now sudden death, they breezed downfield and into the range of McPherson, who turned around in triumph even before his winning kick had passed through the uprights inside stunned Arrowhead Stadium.

“You know, deflated would be a good way to describe it,” Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu said. “But I'm proud of the way we continued to fight throughout the season. I'm proud of the way we stuck together, proud of our coaches, proud of the way we continue to take bullets for us. It's a lot of good to think about. I'm grateful for the opportunity. But I think any time you come up short, you know you could be better, it's obviously deflating.”

HAYS, Kan. - The seventh-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team used a dominant second half to storm from behind and defeat No. 17 Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday, 76-63. The Tigers (17-2, 11-2 MIAA) trailed by as many as 14 for the second game in a row before rallying for another win, allowing FHSU to overtake first place in the MIAA standings.

The Tigers struggled in the first half, hitting just 34.5 percent (10-of-29) from the floor while allowing the Lopers&nbsp;(16-4, 11-3 MIAA) a shooting percentage of 55.2 percent (16-of-29). Fort Hays State kept things somewhat close thanks to five 3-pointers before intermission, including two each from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6439">Whitney Randall</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6444">Kate Dilsaver</a>. After trailing by 10 at the break, 39-29, Fort Hays State started the comeback right away in the third quarter. The Tigers scored the first five points and 10 of the first 12 to close within two, 41-39. The Tigers were perfect from the free-throw line down the stretch, leading by as many as 15 before a late Kearney basket made the final score 76-63. The Tigers finished the game shooting 47.3 percent from the floor (26-of-55), 47.4 percent from behind the arc (9-of-19) and 88.2 percent from the charity stripe (88.2 percent). FHSU limited the Lopers to a shooting percentage of 33.3 percent in the second half, good for a 44.6 percent effort for the game. Dilsaver led the Tigers with a career-high 14 points, while Randall (13 points), Hobbs (11 points) and Wagner (11 points) also reached double figures. Bergmann led the team with five rebounds alongside nine points, with Hobbs dishing out a team-high five assists. Fort Hays State turned the ball over a season-low six times while scoring 14 points off 11 Loper turnovers. The Tigers will return to action Thursday when the road trip continues in Wichita, Kan. against Newman. Tipoff against the Jets is slated for 5:30 p.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;

All but one of the six Lopers that scored in the game hit at least one 3-point field goal. The win gave the Tigers their first in the Health and Sports Center since the 2012-13 season. After the teams split the season series the last four years, the Tigers finally picked up a regular season sweep against the Lopers since that 2012-13 season. 🏀 Tiger men clinical in win over Lopers

LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Keion Brooks scored 27 points and Oscar Tshiebwe had a double-double as No. 12 Kentucky manhandled No. 5 Kansas 80-62 on Saturday night.

The Wildcats grabbed a big halftime lead in Allen Fieldhouse and cruised to improve to 24-10 all-time in the series. Kansas had won four of the past five coming in. The last Kentucky win in Allen Fieldhouse was in 1985.

Kentucky coach John Calipari wasn’t interested in discussing history.

“I don’t even know who we played two weeks ago,” he said after the game. “We’ve won a lot of games against ranked teams, all kinds of different ways. I’ve done this a long time and I’ve been in many of these games on the road where it’s (ESPN College) Game Day. I told the team, ‘All the pressure is on the other team. If you play for 40 minutes, watch what happens.’”

Calipari said he’s seen this coming from Brooks.

“It’s how he’s been playing in his last couple of games and in practice,” Calipari said. “It wasn’t just making baskets. He rebounded. He defended. He came from the week side and tipped the ball. He made great plays. He did all the other things, and then he made shots.”

Tshiebwe had 17 points and 14 rebounds for Kentucky (17-4), which also got 12 points from Kellan Grady and 11 from Jacob Toppin.

Kansas coach Bill Self was not surprised by Tshiebwe’s game.

“Oscar’s stats don’t show how good he is at rebounding, and his stats show that he’s the best rebounder in the country,” Self said.

But Tshiebwe was more interested in talking about Brooks, who was not made available after the game.

“I’m so proud of him,” Tshiebwe said. “I want him to keep coming like that every night. We can be a top team if everyone steps up like that. They pay attention too much to me. Now, they forget about him.”

Kansas (17-3) was led by Ochai Agbaji, who had 13 points, 10 in the second half. But the two-time reigning Big 12 Player of the Week was held well below his Big 12-leading 21.3 points per game. Christian Braun also had 13 points.

Kentucky dominated the boards, owning a 41-29 rebounding edge, including 12-7 on the offensive end.

“Their guys got to a level that we couldn’t get to,” Self said. “When you get into a jumping contest with those dudes, we couldn’t compete.”

Self kept searching for combinations that would allow his team to get back in the game, but that search turned up empty. Kansas used a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to 62-48 early in the second half when Kentucky missed seven straight shots, but the Jayhawks never got any closer.

Kentucky used an 8-0 run early to grab the lead and then held Kansas at bay. Kentucky led by 12 at the 10:29 mark, with their points spread among seven different players. More telling, the Wildcats held a 13-4 advantage on the boards.

The Kentucky lead grew to as many as 20 when Kellan Grady hit a 3-pointer with 2:31 left in the half and the Wildcats led 51-31 at the break, Kansas’ largest halftime deficit of the season. They trailed Kansas State by 16 a week earlier but rallied for a 78-75 win.

Kentucky shot 61.8% (21 of 34) in the first half, while Kansas was just 13 of 33 (39.4%) and Agbaji was held to just three points.

🏀 Brooks scores 27, No. 12 Kentucky beats No. 5 Kansas

GARDEN CITY - Hays High's three state ranked wrestlers finished in the top-three in their respective weight classes helping the Indians to an 11th place finish at the 64th annual Rocky Welton Invitational hosted by Garden City High School.

Gavin Meyers, who's the top-ranked wrestler in at 220, finished first after winning all four of his matches by fall in the first period. Meyers defeated the undefeated&nbsp; and defending Colorado state champion Xavier Freeman of Pueblo East in the finals.

Meyers was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler for the upper weights.

Harley Zimmerman finished second at 132, losing to Dodge City's Damien Mendez by a major decision (22-12) in the finals. He won his first four matches by fall.

Gavin Nutting finished third at heavyweight. After receiving a first-round bye, Nutting won his first two matches by fall before falling by a fall in the semifinals to Newton's Rio Gomez. He bounced back with a 7-1 win over Newton Marcel Gonzalez of Newton in the consolation semifinals then beat Valley Center's Elijah Hunt by fall in the third place match.

OXFORD, Miss. -- Daeshun Ruffin scored 13 of his 17 in the second half and Mississippi defeated Kansas State 67-56 as part of Saturday's Big 12/SEC challenge.

Luis Rodriguez added 10 points for the Rebels (11-10), who shot 45%, 15% better than Kansas State.

Mark Smith collected his fifth double-double this seeason, scoring 18 of his 20 points in the second half and grabbing 16 rebounds for the Wildcats (10-10), who lost their third straight. Nijel Pack scored 18 points, making six of Kansas State's 11 3-pointers, and had seven assists.

Leading by six at halftime, Ole Miss began the second half with a 7-0 run capped by Rodriguez's 3-pointer. Smith responded with seven unanswered points and scored 15 straight. But even after his run ended with eight minutes remaining, the Rebels had a 10-point lead thanks in large part to Ruffin's second-half production.

A Ruffin basket put Ole Miss up by 13 with six minutes to go and the Wildcats wouldn't get closer than nine thereafter.

Ole Miss grabbed the lead seven minutes into the game with a 7-0 run. Another 7-0 run extended the Rebels' lead to 10 before Luke Kasubke converted a four-point play for Kansas State at the end of the half to trail 30-24. Kasubke's 3-pointer came after the Wildcats had missed nine straight shots, finishing at 26% for the half.

The Rebels were plus-10 on the boards, 15 of 20 from the free-throw line to the Wildcats’ 7 of 8 and had a 32-14 advantage in points in the paint.

ESPN first reported Brady’s retirement, citing unidentified sources. Brady’s company posted a tweet indicating he’s retiring, and reaction came from around the world congratulating Brady on his career. But the tweet was later deleted, and Brady’s agent says the 44-year-old quarterback would be the only person to accurately express his future. Brady called Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht to say he has not made a decision, according to two people who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because of the private nature of the conversations.
