LUBBOCK, Texas (AP)&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/teams/KSTATE/kansas-state-wildcats/">Kansas State</a>&nbsp;didn't change much at halftime despite trailing&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/teams/TXTECH/texas-tech-red-raiders/">Texas Tech</a>&nbsp;by two touchdowns.

The outcome wasn't much different from recent seasons either - a sixth straight victory in the series for the Wildcats, who ended their longest Big 12 skid since joining the league in 1996.

Skylar Thompson passed for 296 yards and the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter and Kansas State came up with sacks on the final two plays by the Red Raiders in a 25-24 victory Saturday.

''We didn't change that many calls; we just played them better,'' said Kansas State's Chris Klieman, who is 3-0 against Matt Wells of Texas Tech in a matchup of coaches who joined the conference together in 2019.

''It was a very simple game plan. We told the guys we were going to keep the game plan really simple so they could play fast. In the first half we played fast and made mistakes ... and in the second half we kept it pretty simple, played faster and made plays.''

Thompson's 22-yard TD pass to Deuce Vaughn with just over six minutes left helped the Wildcats (4-3, 1-3 Big 12) rally from a 24-10 halftime deficit with a second-half shutout that stopped an eight-game conference losing streak going back to last year.

The Red Raiders (5-3, 2-3) reached K-State's 46-yard line with three minutes to go. But the Wildcats responded when Felix Anudike-Uzomah sacked Henry Colombi for a 6-yard loss and Nate Matlack dropped the Texas Tech quarterback from behind on fourth-and-16.

The decisive drive for Kansas State was kepth alive when Texas Tech's Devin Drew was flagged for a hands-to-the-face penalty that gave the Wildcats an automatic first down on third-and-34. Thompson responded with four consecutive completions, the last to Vaughn with 6:09 remaining.

''The thing that hurt us was late in the game when we got the untimely penalties,'' Wells said. ''The hands-to-the face - that's the one that really hurt.''

The Red Raiders were also flagged for holding infractions on each of their final two series.

Kansas State climbed back into the game with a third-quarter safety and touchdown following the free kick.

Anudike-Uzomah stuffed SaRodorick Thompson for a 4-yard loss in the end zone to close a two-touchdown halftime deficit to 24-12. Malik Knowles had a 31-yard return on the free kick and the Wildcats drove 69 yards to pull within 24-19 on Vaughn's second rushing TD, a 2-yard burst on fourth-and-1.

Tech Tech stunned the Wildcats early, scoring after just two offensive snaps - both running plays by receivers - and recovering a fumble on the ensuing kickoff.

Erik Ezukanma put the Red Raiders up when he took a jet sweep handoff and dashed 45 yards. Tyrique Matthews smothered Malik Knowles' fumble on the kickoff and Texas Tech took possession at the 23-yard-line.

Sticking mostly to the ground, the Red Raiders drove the short distance and made it 14-0 when Thompson ducked into the end zone on fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard-line.

''We did what we wanted: Got right out of the gate and started fast,'' Wells said. ''We played good ball the rest of the half.''

Kansas State: Vaughn fell short of 100 yards rushing for the fourth consecutive game after hitting triple digits in each of the first three games. But his impact was significant. He had 120 scrimmage yards (52 rushing, 68 receiving) and three TDs.

Texas Tech: The Red Raiders led by 14 points three different times while trying to win consecutive Big 12 games for the first time under Wells. Now they're still a win shy of bowl eligibility, and there's a good chance at least three of their remaining four opponents will be ranked.

The Wildcats outgained Texas Tech 220-102 after halftime and didn't allow the Red Raiders to convert a third down. K-State's last three complete possessions covered 69 yards (TD), 71 yards (lost fumble) and 66 yards (TD).

''We sort of just settled in on defense, and that was important because you can't play defense frantically,'' Klieman said. ''We settled in and played good team defense, and that's what you have to do.''

Texas Tech: at No. 3 Oklahoma next Saturday. The Red Raiders have lost four in a row in Norman, the past three by an average score of 55-24.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Facing a far tougher test than expected against Kansas, Caleb Williams bailed out No. 3 Oklahoma with quick feet and quick thinking.

The freshman converted two crucial fourth downs in the fourth quarter, one with a 40-yard touchdown run, and Oklahoma rallied to avoid an enormous upset and beat Kansas 35-23 Saturday,

The Sooners (8-0, 5-0 Big 12) trailed by double figures on two occasions — including 10-0 at the half —- but outscored the Jayhawks 35-13 in the second half to win their 16th straight game.

“I’m excited for the win, but we played poor football in the first half,” Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley said. “We couldn’t get Kansas off the field and missed several opportunities. I give our team credit for rising up. Kansas deserves a lot of credit, and they did a few things that gave us trouble.”

Jason Bean passed for 246 yards and a score for Kansas (1-6, 0-4), which led 17-7 late in the third quarter.

A 66-yard run by Trevon West sparked the Oklahoma offense, and two plays later Williams tossed a short TD pass to cut the lead to 17-14 in the third quarter.

Kansas was able to stay in the game because of the legs of Devin Neal, who ran for 100 and a pair of touchdowns. Kansas didn’t punt until the fourth quarter.

“I’m proud of our guys and the way the first half especially went,” Kansas coach Lance Leipold said. “We were able to mix some things together and keep their explosive offense off the field.”

In his second start, Williams threw for 178 yards and two scores and ran for 70 yards.

Williams used a sharp cut to avoid two tacklers on a fourth-and-3 and then raced the distance for a 40-yard score to make it 28-17 midway through the fourth quarter.

After KU cut it to 28-23, Oklahoma faced a fourth-and-1 near midfield. Kennedy Brooks looked as if he would be stopped short of the line to gain, but Williams took the ball from the back.

“I saw Caleb so I gave it to him,” Brooks said. “I knew it would be close if I was behind the line of scrimmage and I was happy Caleb ran for a first down.”

Williams scampered 5 yards to keep alive what turned out to be the sealing touchdown drive late in the fourth quarter.

“That was just a really smart play by both of those guys,” Riley said. “We talk about situations like that, but I can’t take credit because that’s all Caleb and Kennedy.”

“We can finish with the best of them, but we don’t play our best early in the game so we need to keep battling that,” Riley said. “It’s time for us to start closing the gaps and playing more consistently.”

Oklahoma has scored 30 or more points in 35 consecutive road games, the longest such streak since at least 1980.

KEARNEY, Neb. - The Fort Hays State men's cross country team placed seventh at the 2021 MIAA Championships on Saturday thanks to a sixth-place finish from senior&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6428">Robbie Schmidt</a>. The Tigers compiled 163 points between their top five runners, just two behind of sixth-place Emporia State. Senior&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6428">Robbie Schmidt</a>&nbsp;picked up his first All-MIAA honor with his sixth-place finish after crossing the line in 24:50.35. The time was 42 seconds faster than his previous best at the eight-kilometer league meet set in 2019. KEARNEY, Neb. - The Fort Hays State men's cross country team placed seventh at the 2021 MIAA Championships on Saturday thanks to a sixth-place finish from senior&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6428">Robbie Schmidt</a>. The Tigers compiled 163 points between their top five runners, just two behind of sixth-place Emporia State. Senior&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6428">Robbie Schmidt</a>&nbsp;picked up his first All-MIAA honor with his sixth-place finish after crossing the line in 24:50.35. The time was 42 seconds faster than his previous best at the eight-kilometer league meet set in 2019. 🏃‍♂️ FHSU men place seventh at conference championships

KEARNEY, Neb. - The Fort Hays State women's cross country team placed sixth at the 2021 MIAA Championships on Saturday thanks to All-MIAA performances from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6403">Abigail Stewart</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6399">Brooke Navarro</a>. The Tigers compiled 144 points among their top five runners, just nine shy of fifth-place Rogers State. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6403">Abigail Stewart</a>&nbsp;picked up her third-career all-conference honor with an 11th-place finish, crossing the line in 22:59.18. The junior was in 16th at the one-mile mark and climbed four spots to 12th at the five-kilometer mark before moving up one more spot over the final kilometer. HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs offense turned in one of its
best performances of the season Friday night as they rolled to a 40-16 win over
Lakin, at Lewis Field Stadium, and clinched a first-round home game next week.

Lakin jumped out to a 7-0 lead when Servando Gonzalez
returned the opening kickoff 97-yards for a touchdown.

The ensuing kickoff pinned the Monarchs (6-2) at their own
10-yardline but the Monarchs would march right down the field in 11 plays, six
of them of 10 yards or more, and make it a 7-6 game with a two-yard run from
junior Kade Harris.

After a Lakin (5-3) three-and-out TMP started at the Lakin
44-yardline and drive back down the field and scored on a two-yard run from senior
Bryce Seib two-yard run that put TMP up 13-7.

Following another three-and-out from Lakin TMP’s Harris
scored his second of three rushing touchdowns in the game, this one from 57
yards out on the first play of the second quarter as TMP took a 20-7 lead.

Seib scored his second rushing touchdown with just under
three minutes left in the first half top cap off a nine-play drive that put TMP
up 27-7.

Two plays later Lakin fumbled the ball at their own 20-yardline
and Harris punched it in two plays later from a yard out to put TMP up 33-7 and
that was the score at the break.

The third quarter was full of mistakes and untimely
penalties for both teams that saw Lakin score 10 unanswered points to cut the
deficit to 33-16 heading into the fourth quarter.

In the final frame TMP’s Griffin Schumacher scored his first
career rushing touchdown from 16-yards out to put TMP up 40-16 with just over
10:30 to play in the game. 

TMP would go on to win by the 40-16 score.

The Monarchs amassed a season-high 463 total yards, 355 of
that coming on the ground.

Harris led the way with 206 yards on 19 carries and those
three touchdowns.

Harris also threw for 105 yards on 6-of-10 passing.

TMP will host the Minneapolis Lions in the first-round of
the 2A playoffs next week at Lewis Field Stadium.

Hays High traveled to Wichita Northwest for one of the state's premier matchups in week eight of the season. The night couldn't have started worse for the Indians. Northwest sprinted out to a 20-0 lead through first ten minutes of the game. Hays punted on their first two drives and the Grizzlies quickly scored on a 39 yard run and a 22 yard pass.&nbsp;

It went from bad to worse when Northwest recovered a fumble in the end zone for a defensive touchdown with 2:17 left in the first quarter.

Down but not out, Hays ran a double pass to kick the offense in gear and scored on their next five possessions. Jaren Kanak found Roy Moroni for 22 yards. Kanak scored from 3o yards out, followed by a Moroni 25 yard scoring run to close the gap down to 20-19 following a blocked extra point.

Northwest extended their lead back out to eight at 27-19 with a 77 yard run by LJ Phillips.&nbsp;

Hays scored on the next two possessions. A long Malik Bah run put the Indians inside the ten yard and Jaren Kanak scored three plays later. The defense forced a punt and two plays later Kanak scored, running in from 54 yards. The Jack Fields extra point gave Hays a 33-27 lead at halftime.

Kanak came up hurt on the touchdown run at the end of the first half and did not record a carry in the second half. Hays recovered a Northwest fumble on the kickoff that opened the second half and converted the ensuing drive into points on a Kanak to Moroni touchdown pass of nine yards. The extra point put Hays up 40-27.

KANSAS CITY, Mo.&nbsp;– The MIAA has announced its league COVID protocols and policies for the 2021-2022 winter sports seasons. These protocols and policies were proposed by the MIAA COVID-19 Task Force and approved by the MIAA Athletic Administrators Committee. The MIAA policies winter seasons will continue to follow the general guidance the NCAA has provided to the membership this year. These policies state that COVID-19 prevention and management strategies should be&nbsp;developed at the school and community level, in each case with federal, state and local public health guidance. Winter seasons will mirror the fall semester protocol in regard to student-athletes. Following this protocol, MIAA Tier 1 individuals who are vaccinated will be exempt from campus COVID testing and exempt from being asked to quarantine unless the individual is exhibiting COVID symptoms or unless vaccinated individuals are mandated to test and/or quarantine per institutional policy. MIAA Tier 1 individuals who are not vaccinated will be subject to campus COVID testing requirements, isolation restrictions following a positive test, and quarantine restrictions as a result of contact tracing. The MIAA will follow the current CDC and NCAA guidance for quarantine restrictions which suggests a 10-day isolation period. However, quarantine restrictions may end after day seven if the individual receives a negative test following testing on day five or later of the quarantine period. Attendance policies and mask requirements of athletes, coaches and spectators will be campus-level decisions. The MIAA continues to encourage the use of masks by all Tier 1 individuals, whether vaccinated or not vaccinated, when engaging in nonphysical team activities. The protocols for winter seasons also include policies on the management of MIAA officials, contact tracing and postponements of contests. The MIAA offers a fan page on its website to share the campus action plan for each member institution in the Association. The MIAA will follow the current CDC and NCAA guidance for quarantine restrictions which suggests a 10-day isolation period. However, quarantine restrictions may end after day seven if the individual receives a negative test following testing on day five or later of the quarantine period. Attendance policies and mask requirements of athletes, coaches and spectators will be campus-level decisions. The MIAA continues to encourage the use of masks by all Tier 1 individuals, whether vaccinated or not vaccinated, when engaging in nonphysical team activities. The protocols for winter seasons also include policies on the management of MIAA officials, contact tracing and postponements of contests. The Broncos' surprising start has become a troubling slide.

Miller, who all but guaranteed a Denver win earlier this week, sprained his ankle in the first half and could only watch in the second as the Broncos lost their fourth straight, 17-14 to the banged-up Cleveland Browns on Thursday night.

One of the NFL’s top defensive players, Miller banged his leg into teammate Dre’Mont Jones as he was rushing Browns quarterback Case Keenum with less than two minutes remaining before halftime.

Miller’s leg slammed into Jones and buckled inward. He dropped to one knee and asked for medical assistance. Miller, who missed all of 2020 with an ankle injury, left the field under his own power, walking very gingerly to the sideline.

Afterward, Miller said his ankle “is good” and X-rays were “clean.” He thought he could have played in the second half, but the team's medical staff encouraged him to stay as out as a precaution.

The pain of losing seemed more severe than any injury.

“I talked a lot of (smack) before this game and I made it personal and I wanted the animosity,” Miller said. "I wanted this to be that game. And I wanted to win it. I was going to leave it all out there today.

"I was comfortable with everything I said. I want to continue to make it personal.”

In the buildup to the game, Miller proclaimed he would record multiple sacks, and he jokingly warned he would “kill” any of the tackles Cleveland put in front of him. The 32-year-old Miller couldn't back up his words as the Broncos (3-4) lost again, completely erasing their promising start to 2021.

Broncos coach Vic Fangio would not use Miller's injury or quarterback Teddy Bridgewater playing hurt as reasons for his team's October slide.

“We've got to rally and overcome our injuries,” Fangio said. “Not use them as an excuse. We've got to make it good enough.”

Earlier this week, the Broncos placed starting linebackers Alexander Johnson and Andre Mintze on injured reserve and they're also missing wide receiver Jerry Jeudy (ankle sprain) and linebacker Bradley Chubb (ankle surgery), who is about a month away from returning.

Bridgewater threw a pair of TD passes and gutted it out while playing with foot and quadriceps injuries. He came into the game listed as questionable, but didn't miss a play and finished 23 of 33 for 187 yards with one interception.

“Tough loss today, man,” Bridgeater said. “It sucks. We've got to turn this thing around. We can't wait until the second half. There's definitely a sense of urgency to save the season. We can't look 10 weeks down from now.”

Denver's offense sputtered in the first half, picking up just 76 yards. But Bridgewater led a 13-play, 79-yard scoring drive he capped with an 8-yard TD pass to Melvin Gordon to open the second half that gave the Broncos life.

“We can't take three quarters to get going,” Gordon said.

The Broncos were able to close within 17-14 on Bridgewater's 10-yard pass to Javonte Williams with 5:17 left.

But missing Miller, Denver's defense couldn't stop the Browns, who handed the ball to third-string running back D'Ernest Johnson seven times and he picked up 52 yards while Cleveland ran the clock out.

"The last drive was very frustrating,” Fangio said. “We loaded up against the run and we couldn’t stop them.”

HUTCHINSON – The Hays High girls’ golf team closed out one
of the most successful seasons in school history with a second place finish at
the 5A State Golf Tournament at Carey Park. The Indians shot a 362 in Tuesday’s
final round, one shot better than their 363 in Monday’s opening round.

Kapaun Mt. Carmel shot a 306 in the final round and won the
team title by 89 strokes. Mill Valley placed third, 11 shots behind HHS.

Katie Dinkel shot an 84 Monday then closed with an 81 in the
final round Tuesday and tied for ninth at 23-over. Taleia McCrae shot an 89
Monday and 91 Tuesday and tied for 17th with a 180.

Maize freshman Kinslea Jones shot a 72 in the final round
and won the individual title at 6-over-par. Kapaun senior Katherine Tilma finished
second, three back of Jones.
