The Tigers are coming off a 63-60 win over Newman on Thursday night in Wichita, which produced head coach&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/coaches.aspx?rc=1048">Mark Johnson</a>'s 400th&nbsp;career win in exactly 600 games coaching the Tigers. All 400 of his wins are at FHSU, starting in 2001-02. The win gave the Tigers a regular season sweep of the Jets after winning the first meeting of the season in Hays, and pushed their current win streak to five games. Fort Hays State is looking for its first win over a ranked team since the 2018-19 season. The Bronchos were not ranked in the Top 25 yet when the teams first met this season in Hays. UCO won that contest 77-60 and then moved into the Top 25 shortly after that. It also marked Central Oklahoma's first-ever win at Gross Memorial Coliseum. FHSU was No. 23 in the D2SIDA Top 25 at that time.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6460">Kaleb Hammeke</a>&nbsp;scored 30 points for the Tigers in what was one of their three setbacks so far this season. FHSU has played only one Top 25 ranked team so far this season, that being then No. 2/2 ranked Northwest Missouri State back on January 12. Fort Hays State won the last meeting in Edmond with Central Oklahoma by a score of 89-79 in 2020-21. The Tigers hit their first nine 3-point field goals of that game on their way to 17 made overall. That tied their record for made 3-point field goals in an MIAA game. 🏀🔈 LISTEN - No. 6 FHSU women continue road trip Saturday in Edmond

HAYS - The TMP-Marian girls and boys basketball teams remained unbeaten in the Mid-Continent League Friday with a doubleheader sweep of Smith Center.

Girls: TMP 57, Smith Center 50 After leading the entire way the TMP Lady Monarchs scored the final eight points of the game Friday night and rallied for a 57-50 victory.

The Monarchs (13-2, 7-0 MCL) were able to build a four-point lead to open the game and held that lead most of the way through the opening period. They led by as many as six at 15-9 thanks to a Sophia Balthazor three-pointer and a pair of Megan Hamel free throws. TMP led 15-11 through one quarter of action.

TMP used a 10-4 run to open the second quarter and had their largest lead of the game at 10 at 25-15.

Smith Center answered right back though with a 10-0 run of the own to tie the game at 25 before Jaci VonLintel’s layup at the end of the first half put TMP up 27-25 at the break.

In the third quarter TMP again built a comfortable lead, this time at nine at 39-30. But every time built a lead the Lady Red answered back.

Down eight at 44-36 late in the third Smith Center (12-3, 8-1) put together a 14-5 run to take the lead at 50-49 on a Tallon Rentschler three pointer with 4:45 left.

Down one the Monarchs turned to senior Emilee Lane who scored back-to-back field goals to give TMP the lead back at 53-50 with 4:40 left in the game.

On a missed free throw Smith Center saved the rebound to VonLintel who scored for TMP to put them up 55-50. A pair of Hamel free throws secured the 57-50 win for TMP.

Emilee Lane TMP with 19 points and Jaci VonLintel added 15 points.

Smith Center’s Rentschler led all scorers with 21 points.

The Monarchs are the lone unbeaten team in the MCL.

Boys: TMP 69, Smith Center 25 The TMP boys used a 40-9 first half run to build a double-digit lead and cruised to a 69-25 win over Smith Center Friday in Hays.

Smith Center’s Nolan Lehman scored the game’s first field goal but the Monarchs (11-3, 6-0 MCL) Gavin Unrein scored five straight to put TMP on top and they were never trail again.

Unrein scored 12 of his team-high 17 points in the first quarter for TMP as they built a 22-9 lead.

Kenton Ginther and Jace Wentling combined to scored 17 second quarter points as the Monarchs opened the quarter on a 26-5 run and took a 48-17 lead into the halftime break.

TMP outscored Smith Center 21-8 in the second-half, with a running clock in the fourth quarter on their way to the 69-25 win.

Gavin Unrein led all scorers with 17 points and Kenton Ginther added 12 points and four three-pointers.

🏀TMP sweeps Smith Center; stays unbeaten in MCL

Hays and Dodge City met up for big Western Athletic Conference games in Dodge City on Friday night.

Girls Hays 42 - #8-6A Dodge City 40

Hays went to Dodge City looking for a signature after losing each of the six games they had played against state ranked teams. They found that win with a buzzer beating shot.

Dodge City jumped out to a 9-0 lead taking advantage of early turnovers by the Indians. Hays responded with a 7-0 run and had the ball three times down 9-7 but couldn't tie or take the lead. The Red Demons went on a 10-5 run to take 19-12 lead, but the Indians responded with an 8-0 to take their first lead at 22-21. The advantage was short lived as Dodge City took a 23-22 lead to the locker room.

The two teams swapped the lead four times in the third quarter leaving Dodge City with a 36-33 lead heading to the final eight minutes.&nbsp;

Dodge City took a 40-35 lead with 6:15 remaining in the game. They didn't score again. However, it looked as if Hays wouldn't take advantage still trailing by the same score with 1:20 left. Carly Lang hit a pair of free throws to close the gap down to 40-39. Dodge City missed a dagger three pointer setting up the Indians for a final opportunity, on that Aleyia Ruder put three the net at the buzzer for three points and a 42-40 win.

Per Dodge City play-by-play broadcaster Sean Boston, the win by Hays snaps a 21 game winning streak in the Dodge City High School Fieldhouse. Their last loss in that gym was 12/19/19.

Molly Martin scored 13. Ruder's buzzer beat ended her night with 11. Mataya Clark scored a career high 13 for Dodge City.

The Indians hit a career high seven three pointers.

Hays improves to 9-6 and is now in second play in the WAC at 3-2. #8-6A Dodge City falls to 13-3, 2-2. Hays is off for a week when they host Colby.

Boys #3-5A Hays 53 - #4-6A Dodge City 34

Hays used a 6-0 spurt in the first quarter to take their second lead at 10-5 and kept the advantage through a low scoring first half. Hays led 10-7 after one quarter and held Dodge City to just one point over the first five minutes of the second quarter.

They found that win with a buzzer beating shot.Dodge City jumped out to a 9-0 lead taking advantage of early turnovers by the Indians. Hays responded with a 7-0 run and had the ball three times down 9-7 but couldn't tie or take the lead. The Red Demons went on a 10-5 run to take 19-12 lead, but the Indians responded with an 8-0 to take their first lead at 22-21. 🏀 Tigers hang on in Wichita, Johnson reaches 400 wins

WICHITA, Kan. - The No. 6 Fort Hays State women's basketball team outscored Newman 17-2 in the first quarter&nbsp;Thursday (Feb. 3) before going on to win by 49 on the road, 79-30. It was FHSU's largest margin of victory in an MIAA game and was the second-fewest points allowed against a Division II opponent during the&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/coaches.aspx?rc=1043">Tony Hobson</a>&nbsp;era (50-28 at Northeastern State, 2/28/15). The win was Hobson's 300th victory as a Tiger and the 713th win in his 30-year career as a collegiate head coach. The Tigers have averaged more than 21 wins per season during Hobson's 14-year tenure at Fort Hays State.

After Tigers (18-2, 12-2 MIAA) and Jets (2-20, 0-16 MIAA) traded buckets over the first 90 seconds, Fort Hays State held Newman scoreless for nearly 13 minutes while going on a 24-0 run to take an authoritative 26-2 lead midway through the second quarter. The Tigers hit 50 percent from the floor during the run while the FHSU defense forced 15 consecutive missed shots and nine Jet turnovers. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6443">Katie Wagner</a>&nbsp;scored the first six points of the game for the Tigers before&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6438">Olivia Hollenbeck</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6437">Jaden Hobbs</a>&nbsp;added six points each during the big run. The Jets finally got back on the board with a 3-pointer at the 5:53 point in the second quarter, but that would be the home team's final field goal of the first half. The Tigers went into the locker room with a 36-7 lead after limiting the Jets to just 8.7 percent shooting (2-of-23). It was the fewest points surrendered by the Tigers in a half during the Hobson era. Fort Hays State kept adding to the lead in the third quarter, hitting 52.9 percent from the floor (9-of-17) and 3-of-5 from behind the arc. The Tigers led by as many as 51 late in the fourth quarter, matching their largest lead of the season, before finishing off the 49-point win. Newman's 30 points are the fourth-fewest allowed in any game by the Tigers under Hobson. The Tigers finished the game shooting 45.6 percent (26-of-57) from the floor, their 13th game this year with a field goal percentage better than 45 percent. The FHSU defense held Newman to just 17.6 percent shooting (9-of-51), the fourth-lowest field-goal percentage allowed during the Hobson era and the lowest shooting percentage given up to a DII team. Ten different Tigers scored in the victory, including seven players with at least five points. Four were in double figures, including 14 from Hobbs thanks to four 3-pointers. Wagner added 13 points, five rebounds and four assists while&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6441">Jessie Sallach</a>&nbsp;was one rebound shy of a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds. Fort Hays State scored 27 points off 21 Newman turnovers, while the Jets did not record any points off turnovers. The Tigers outscored Newman in transition, 10-0, and in the paint, 34-12. WICHITA —&nbsp;The Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission and National Baseball Congress Foundation is proud to announce the 88th&nbsp;NBC World Series, powered by Evergy returns to Wichita State University - Eck Stadium later this summer. The NBC World Series will be played July 28 to August 6, with Wichita hosting the last six days of the event, August 1 to 6. The first four days will be played in Hutchinson at Hobart-Detter Field, July 28 to 31.&nbsp;

“We’re pleased to renew our partnership with Wichita State and the City of Hutchinson. Both have grown to be amazing partners over the last few years”, said Kevin Jenks, NBC Tournament Director. “Playing at Eck Stadium ensures the NBC tradition stays in Wichita, while the energy and hospitality of the Hutchinson community continues to grow”.&nbsp;

The format for this year’s event returns to a 16-team field. Four pools of four teams each will compete over a six-day period, with the top two teams from each pool advancing to a single elimination bracket to determine a national champion, Saturday, August 6. Four games per day will be played July 28 – August 2. The NBC Hall of Fame Induction is scheduled for Wednesday, August 3. Single elimination bracket games will be played August 4 – 6.

“The return to pool play with a single elimination bracket meets the requests of our teams that travel hundreds of miles to compete in our national tournament. Qualifying for the NBC World Series is difficult enough. Now our teams have the chance to play more games with more rest for much needed pitching.” Jenks added.

The NBC World Series was created in 1935 by local sporting goods salesman Raymond “Hap” Dumont. This year will mark the 88th&nbsp;continuous year for the annual tournament.

🏀🔈 LISTEN - No. 6 FHSU women open busy weekend Thursday in Wichita

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) - Nijel Pack ran down a long in-bounds pass, then found open space at the top of the key to bury a game-winning 3-pointer with 2.2 seconds left to give Kansas State a hard-fought 71-68 win over Oklahoma State on Wednesday night.

The game was tied four times in the final 6:46 after Mark Smith pulled Kansas State even at 62-62 with a three-point play. Smith tied the game again at 64-64 with a pair of free throws and at 66-66 on a jumper with 2:14 left. Bryce Thompson drew a foul while the Cowboys worked for a go-ahead field goal with 38 seconds remaining, but missed the first free throw and Smith grabbed the rebound. Markquis Nowell's 3-point attempt rimmed in and out with 12 seconds left, but Pack tied up the rebound and Kansas State retained possession.

Pack hit 4 of 7 3-point attempts and added three steals to lead the Wildcats (11-10, 3-6 Big 12). Smith was 5 of 6 from the line and finished with 19 points and eight rebounds. Nowell added 12 points.

Thompson finished with 22 points to lead Oklahoma State (10-11, 3-6). Rondel Walker added 18 points and Keylan Boone chipped in 13 points off the bench.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) - Nijel Pack ran down a long in-bounds pass, then found open space at the top of the key to bury a game-winning 3-pointer with 2.2 seconds left to give Kansas State a hard-fought 71-68 win over Oklahoma State on Wednesday night.The game was tied four times in the final 6:46 after Mark Smith pulled Kansas State even at 62-62 with a three-point play. Smith tied the game again at 64-64 with a pair of free throws and at 66-66 on a jumper with 2:14 left. Bryce Thompson drew a foul while the Cowboys worked for a go-ahead field goal with 38 seconds remaining, but missed the first free throw and Smith grabbed the rebound. Markquis Nowell's 3-point attempt rimmed in and out with 12 seconds left, but Pack tied up the rebound and Kansas State retained possession.Pack hit 4 of 7 3-point attempts and added three steals to lead the Wildcats (11-10, 3-6 Big 12). Smith was 5 of 6 from the line and finished with 19 points and eight rebounds. Nowell added 12 points.Thompson finished with 22 points to lead Oklahoma State (10-11, 3-6). Initially scheduled to begin Friday in Golden, Colo., the Tigers will instead open the year inside historic Larks Park on Saturday (Feb. 5) at 1 p.m. The series will continue with a doubleheader on Sunday (Feb. 6) beginning at noon before the series finale begins at 1 p.m. on Monday (Feb. 7). Admission is free once again at Larks Park this season, while live video is also scheduled to be available all season. Fans can access games via&nbsp;<a href="https://themiaanetwork.com/fhsutigers/">The MIAA Network</a>&nbsp;for $10 for a day pass or $25 for a reoccurring monthly subscription. The Tigers are coming off an 11-26 record a year ago, while Mines turned in a 10-20 record during the shortened 2021 season. Opening his fourth season as head baseball coach at his alma mater, this is the second time that&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/coaches.aspx?rc=1023">Jerod Goodale</a>&nbsp;has faced off with his former team. The Tigers went 1-3 against the Orediggers two years ago in Hays in another series that changed sites due to winter weather. ⚾ FHSU to open season at Larks Park Saturday

WaKeeney – The TMP-Marian boys and girls basketball teams
stayed unbeaten in the Mid-Continent League Tuesday night with a pair of wins
against the Trego Golden Eagles in WaKeeney.

Girls: 56, Trego 26 The TMP girls a 24-2 run to end the first half and open the
third quarter on their way to their 11th win in-a-row Tuesday 56-26
over Trego Tuesday in WaKeeney.

The Lady Monarchs (12-2, 5-0 MCL) opened the game on a 9-0
run that extended to a 13-3 run heading into the second quarter. TMP forced
Trego (8-6, 4-2) into nine first quarter turnovers. 

Trego was able to close within five to start the second
quarter but TMP finished the first half on an 8-0 run to lead 23-10 at
halftime.

They opened the second half on a 16-2 run to take a 39-13
lead.

The Monarchs led by 30 points in the fourth quarter and with
the running clock they went on to the 56-26 win.

TMP’s Emilee Lane scored 10 of her game-high 18 points on
the first half and pulled down a game-high eight rebounds. Sophia Balthazor added
13 points.

Boys: TMP 51, Trego 49 The TMP boys rallied from down eight with three and a half
minutes left in the fourth quarter and knock off Trego 51-49 in overtime.

Trego opened the game on a 7-3 first quarter run and led by
four at the end of the fourth quarter before TMP’s Andrew Schwartz hit a
three-pointer at the end of the first quarter cutting the Trego lead to 13-12.

With Trego leading 15-14 TMP’s Kade Harris and Kenton Ginther
hit back-to-back three pointers for TMP 10-3, 5-0 MCL) sparking a 14-4 run
putting TMP ahead 26-17. The Monarchs led 28-23 at halftime.

TMP was able to build a nine-point was five and a half
minutes left in the third quarter at 32-23

Trego (11-2, 4-1 MCL) answered with a 22-3 run to end the third
quarter and begin the fourth quarter to take a 45-37 lead with three and a half
minutes left in the fourth quarter.

TMP closed fourth quarter on a 10-2 run with a Bryce Seib
free throw tying the game at 47 with just 57 seconds left.

In the overtime period TMP’s Kade Harris scored the only
field goal, a layup after a steal by Gavin Unrein with just over two and a half
minutes left putting TMP up 49-47.

Kade Harris scored eight of his 13 points in the fourth quarter
and overtime. Dylan Werth also finished with a team-high 13 points. Werth added
nine rebounds.

Trego’s Charlie Russell scored a game-high 26 points and
added eight rebounds.

🏀 Tuesday high school basketball scores

Hays High opened the month of February with home games against Scott City. The Indians entered the month with seven games remaining in the regular season, five of those coming at home.

Hays trailed just twice at 3-0 and 7-5 before using a 14-0 run that put the Indians up for good. Scott City was held to single digit points in the each of the first three quarters as the Indians pulled away for a 49-32 victory.

Hays trailed 7-5 with three minutes left in the first quarter before a three pointer gave the Indians the lead. Over the last eleven minutes of the half Hays outscored the Beavers 22-5 for a 27-12 halftime advantage.

The Indians did survive a four plus minute scoring drought to open up the third quarter by allowing Scotty City to score just six points in the same amount of time. It was the only time the game was single digits in the second half at 27-18. The Indians would score the games next nine points and were never threatened rest of the way.

Hays would lead by as many as 21 points in the fourth quarter ahead of the seventeen point victory.

Molly Martin led the Indians with 18 points. Carly Lang added 11. Scott City's Brooke Strine scored 18.

The Indians improve to 8-6. The Beavers fall to 6-8. Hays resumes Western Athletic Conference play in Dodge City on Friday.

Boys Scott City 45 - #3 Hays 70

Hays trailed Scott City by six once and twice two times in the first quarter as the Beavers made seven of eleven shots over the first eight minutes. Hays trailed 18-15 after the first eight minutes.&nbsp;

The second and third quarter was won by Hays. The Indians held Scott City to just two field goals on twelve attempts while forcing the Beavers into sixteen turnovers. Hays took a 29-23 lead into halftime.

The Indians pushed the advantage to twenty-four on a 19-2 third quarter run. Hays led by twenty going to the fourth quarter on the way to a 70-45 victory.

Ten players scored for Hays in the victory, led by Jace Linenberger with 21 points. Seven players scored five or more points for the Indians who improve to 13-1. Scott City was led by 11 points from both Gus Hawkins and Austin Thon. The Beavers fall to 7-7.

#3 Hays heads on the road Friday to Dodge City and faces the 14-1 Dodge City Red Demons who are ranked #4 in 6A. The Indians are 4-0 in Western Athletic Conference play while Dodge City is 3-0 after beating Garden City 70-49.&nbsp;

🏀 Home sweep for Hays over Scott City

AMES, Iowa (AP) — David McCormack and Dajuan Harris each scored 14 points, and No. 10 Kansas defeated No. 20 Iowa State 70-61 on Tuesday night.

McCormick made all seven of his shots and had 14 rebounds for the Jayhawks (18-3, 7-1 Big 12), who were without Ochai Agbaji. The Big 12′s leading scorer at 20.9 points per game, Agbaji didn’t play due to COVID-19 protocols.

Jalen Wilson scored all 13 of his points in the second half. Christian Braun also finished with 13.

“We learned a lot about our team today,” Braun said. “We learned a lot of guys can step up. Obviously, we lost a big scorer and a great player, but we knew we could get the win.”

Izaiah Brockington led Iowa State (16-6, 3-6) with 24 points.

Kansas again struggled with turnovers against the Cyclones. The Jayhawks committed 16 in a 62-61 win over the Cyclones on Jan. 11. They had 16 in the first 20 minutes on Tuesday.

Despite those struggles, Kansas built a 19-10 lead when Braun made a layup midway through the first half. Iowa State used an 8-0 run to trim the margin to 24-22 but trailed the Jayhawks 30-24 at the break.

“David shot the ball great,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “And Dajuan made some ridiculously hard layups. It was a good team win.”

A Wilson layup pushed the margin to 40-28 early in the second half. A McCormick jumper kept Kansas in control 56-44, with 6:34 remaining.

“I just kind of went into a free mentality, knowing coach put a lot of faith in me and my teammates put a lot of faith in me,” McCormick said. “I just made it an emphasis to dominate the game.”

Kansas shot 56% for the game, while holding Iowa State to 41%.

Kansas remains the only team with one loss in the Big 12 standings. The Jayhawks were hoping to bounce back from Saturday’s 80-62 trouncing by Kentucky. Iowa State was seeking a third straight win after losing four out of five during a midseason slump.

The rest of the field was out of the competition before Stanley even attempted his first jump. He is currently ranked first on the NCAA DII performance chart with a season-best clearance of 17-0.75, while this week's effort would have been fourth best on the national performance list. Stanley was NCAA Division II outdoor national champion in the pole vault last year and finished fourth nationally during the indoor season.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Kansas Basketball Coaches Association has released their boys and girls state rankings for the week.

The Hays High boys jump up one spot to No. 3 in Class 5A. Kapaun Mt. Carmel remains No. 1 and Topeka West No. 2. Highland Park drops two spots to No. 4.

The TMP-Marian girls move up one in Class 3A to No. 9. Goodland holds at the No. 7 spot. Silver Lake is at the top of 3A this week, replacing Nickerson who falls to fourth.

The Trego boys stay at No. 8 and Ellinwood No. 6 in 2A boys. Smith Center remains at No. 7 in 2A girls.

The Osborne boys fall one spot to No. 4 while the Osborne girls hold at No. 6 in 1A Division I. 

The Wheatland/Grinnell boys fall to ninth and the girls stay at No. 10 in 1A Division II. The Dighton boys are sixth and Logan-Palco 10th. Central Plains remains No. 1&nbsp; in the girls poll with Golden Plains up one spot to No. 3 and St. John's-Tipton down two to ninth.

Lawrence Free State remains No. 1 and Dodge City No. 4 in Class 6A boys.&nbsp;The Dodge City and Liberal girls switch places. The Red Demons are now ranked eighth and Liberal ninth.&nbsp;

The Kansas Basketball Coaches Association has released their boys and girls state rankings for the week.The Hays High boys jump up one spot to No. 3 in Class 5A. Kapaun Mt. Carmel remains No. 1 and Topeka West No. 2. Highland Park drops two spots to No. 4.The TMP-Marian girls move up one in Class 3A to No. 9. Goodland holds at the No. 7 spot. Silver Lake is at the top of 3A this week, replacing Nickerson who falls to fourth.The Trego boys stay at No. 8 and Ellinwood No. 6 in 2A boys. Smith Center remains at No. 7 in 2A girls.The Osborne boys fall one spot to No. 4 while the Osborne girls hold at No. 6 in 1A Division I. The Wheatland/Grinnell boys fall to ninth and the girls stay at No. 10 in 1A Division II. The Dighton boys are sixth and Logan-Palco 10th. Central Plains remains No. 1&nbsp; in the girls poll with Golden Plains up one spot to No. 3 and St. John's-Tipton down two to ninth.Lawrence Free State remains No. 1 and Dodge City No. 4 in Class 6A boys.&nbsp;The Dodge City and Liberal girls switch places.
