McCOOK, Neb. – The Hays High track and field teams opened their seasons at the McCook Invitational Thursday. The Indian boys had three individual first place finishes and the girls two along with a winning relay.

Jordan Dale won the high jump,
clearing 6’6”, Chason VenDerWege took the long jump with a leap of 21’5” and Grayson Walburn was champ in the discus with a throw of 135’11”.

Lilian McGrath brought home the gold
medal in the girls long jump at 16’3 ½” and Katie Linenberger was part of a
three-way tie for first in the high jump, clearing 5’0”. The 4x100 Meter Relay
team of Kacy Dinkel, Landri Dotts, Brooklynn Lewallen and Lilian McGrath finished
first with a time of 52.59.

The Indians are back in Nebraska next
Friday at the Kearney Invitational.

👟 HHS opens season with six first place finishes in McCook

McPHERSON - The Hays High girls’ soccer teams fell 2-1 in a nail-biter to Valley Center in Thursday's semifinals of the McPherson Invitational. 

Madelyn Martin scores Hays only goal in the second half. 

Hays (2-2) will play McPherson in the third-place match on Friday at 6:00 p.m. The host Bullpups lost to Maize South 4-0 in their semifinals game.

Valley Center and Maize South play for the title at 8:00 p.m.

HAYS - Hays High softball opened the home portion of the season by hosting Abilene on Thursday at the Bickle Schmidt Sports Complex.

Game 1: Abilene 6, Hays 6 Hays High could not overcome the seven runs they gave up in the first two innings, falling to Abilene 8-6. The Indians committed four errors in those two innings and trailed 7-1 after the second.

Hays chipped away at the lead with two runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth. Elle Dreiling's two run homer in the fifth chased the Cowgirls' starting pitcher from the game with Hays closing the lead down to 7-6.

However the Indians never got any closer. Abilene scored one more run in the sixth and Hays never threatened again.

Madyson Sennett and Elle Dreiling each recorded three hits. They each scored a pair of runs. Dezarae Schmidt recorded her first varsity homerun for the Indian's first run in the game.

Aubree Thomas took the loss in the circle.

Game 2: Abilene 12, Hays 7 Like game one, Hays gave up big numbers in the first two innings while recording errors. Hays allowed nine runs before the first six outs were in the book. Abilene pushed three across in the first and six in the second.

The Indians made it a one run game by scoring two runs on a Dezerae Schmidt triple in the first inning. But Hays pushed back with just one run in the bottom of the second.

Abilene added three more runs in the fourth inning to push their advantage to 12-3 before the Indians responded with two runs in each the sixth and seventh inning for the final 12-7 score.

Lakyn Zimmerman recorded three hits in the second game.

Hays falls to 1-3 and Abilene starts their year at 2-0.

GREAT BEND - The TMP-Marian girls' soccer team lost 3-1 to the Great Bend Panthers Thursday in Great Bend.

No other details of the match were made available.

The Monarchs are now 1-2 on the season. They host the Wichita Classical School at 1:00 p.m. Saturday.

The Hays Larks have released their 2022 summer schedule which includes 26 home dates beginning with an alumni game against the Old Fort Hays Post 9 in the second annual Vintage Baseball Game on June 1st.

The Larks play their first game of the season on the road against former Jayhawk League foe Great Bend on June 2nd. The Bat Cats will play in Hays the next night in the Larks home opener..

The Larks begin defense of their Rocky Mountain Baseball League title on June 7th at home against the Dodge City A's. The Larks and A's will play four RMBL games along with two non-league games. Former Jayhawk League rival Liberal is also joining the RMBL and will play the Larks twice in Liberal and twice in Hays during a 10-game homestand to close out the regular season.

👟 FHSU women 12th, men 18th in first outdoor national rankings

Calif. – Kansas senior Ochai Agbaji
has been named one of five finalists for the 2022 John R. Wooden Award Men’s
Player of the Year. The Los Angeles Athletic Club announced the All-American
Team and the five finalists Wednesday evening on ESPNU.

Agbaji becomes the 25th Jayhawk to be named a Wooden Award
All-American all-time and the first since 2020, when Udoka Azubuike and Devon
Dotson both earned the honor. Agbaji now seeks to become the third Kansas
player to win the Wooden Award, joining Frank Mason III (2017) and Danny
Manning (1988).

Joining Agbaji as finalists for the Wooden Award are Johnny
Davis (Wisconsin), Keegan Murray (Iowa), Drew Timme (Gonzaga) and Oscar
Tshiebwe (Kentucky). Agbaji is the lone finalist still competing in the 2022
NCAA Tournament. All five players have been invited to Los Angeles for the 46th
annual presentation of the John R. Wooden Award Presented by Wendy’s Gala.

Agbaji has already earned what will be announced as Consensus
All-America First Team honors by collecting All-America first-team nods from
the NABC, AP, The Sporting News and USBWA. Those four entities make up the
collaboration of the consensus teams recognized by the NCAA. Agbaji is Kansas’
31st all-time Consensus All-America First Team selection, which is more than
any other school. He is the first Jayhawk to earn the honor since Devonte’
Graham in 2018.

Also a finalist for the Naismith Trophy, Agbaji was named the
2022 Big 12 Player of the Year after leading the conference in scoring and he
enters the Final Four with an average of 18.9 points per game. He is second in
the league in three-point field goal percentage (39.8%, 35th nationally) and
third in three-point field goals made per game (2.6, 71st nationally). He was
also named the Big 12 Championship Most Outstanding Player and an
all-tournament selection in guiding Kansas to the tourney title earlier this
month.

A four-year starter for KU, Agbaji has etched his name into the
Kansas records book. He holds the record for consecutive games of three-point
field goals made at 53. The Kansas City, Missouri, native also ranks 16th on
the KU career scoring list with 1,619 points, fourth on the three-point field
goals made (243) and fourth on three-point field goals attempted (659).

The 46th annual John R. Wooden Award Presented by Wendy’s Men’s
Player of the Year will be announced on Tuesday, April 5th on SportsCenter on
ESPN. The John R. Wooden Award Presented by Wendy’s Gala will honor the Men’s
and Women’s Wooden Award winners, and will include the presentation of the
Wooden Award All American Teams and the Legends of Coaching Award, this year
given to Rick Byrd. The Gala will take place at the Los Angeles Athletic Club
on Friday, April 8th.

It was her first individual tournament title at Fort Hays State and seventh top-10 finish in just her second year of competition. She shot a 2-over 74 in the opening round and sat one stroke back of the lead, then shot an even-par 72 in the second round to run away with the title by five strokes over Jessica Green of Rogers State. Brasser's 2-over par total was 10 strokes better two players that tied for third. She led the tournament with eight birdies and led in par-5 scoring (-3) and par-4 scoring (+2). Brasser has finished in the top 10 of all three meets for the Tiger women so far this spring. She was sixth at the Diffee Ford Lincoln Invitational in Oklahoma City and fourth at the Hillcat Classic in Owasso, Okla. She shot 75 or lower in five of her six rounds this spring.&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp;HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State Football will hold its annual Spring Scrimmage on Saturday, April 23 at Lewis Field Stadium in Hays. 🏈 FHSU spring football scrimmage set for Saturday, April 23

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – After sitting just one stroke off the lead heading into day two of competition, Morgan Brasser ran away with the individual title at the Holiday Inn Express Classic in at the St. Joseph Country Club, a par-72 venue. She shot an opening round 2-over par 74, then backed that with an impressive even-par 72 to win the tournament by five strokes. She helped the Tigers to a fifth-place finish as a team.

Jessica Green of Rogers State led the tournament at 1-over par following the first round. Brasser held the lead for a good chunk of the first round before Green slipped to the top near the end of competition on Monday. On day two, Brasser asserted her presence by going 2-under par in her first four holes, finished her first nine at 1-under, and then eventually settled at even by shooting 1-over on the second nine. Green could not find a birdie in a 4-over par front nine, then she slipped even further with a double bogey on her 12th hole of the day and shot 6-over for the round to finish at +7 overall.

The rest of the field did not put up much of a challenge as Brasser and Green were the only two inside of +12 overall. Outside of Green, Brasser was 10 strokes clear of the remainder of the field. Brasser finished the tournament with eight birdies, eight bogeys, and one double bogey. Other than that, she was a par machine with 19 over the two rounds. Her eight birdies were best of any golfer in the field.

Kerrigan Rudolph shot 88 in the opening round and 85 in the second round to finish in a tie for 40th. Shauna Lee shot rounds of 93 and 82 to finish in a tie for 48th. Kira Mestl carded rounds of 90 and 85 to tie Lee for 48th. Lexie Ridder shot 101 and 86 to finish 65th.

Brasser's strong individual performance anchored the fifth-place finish for the FHSU women out of 13 teams competing at +93. Rogers State, ranked 20th nationally, won the tournament at +51, while Missouri Western was second at +78. Wayne State was third at +88 and Iowa Central Community College was a stroke behind at +89.

The Tigers will play their next two tournaments at Sand Creek Station in Newton, Kansas. The Tigers will be there April 4-5 at the Newman Invitational and then April 21-23 the course will be the site of the MIAA Championships.

The senior took the loss, his first decision of the season, after allowing four runs on six hits and three walks over 3.0 innings of relief. He matched Sanchez with a team-best two strikeouts on the day. team opened their season with a split against Tuesday. The Indians defeated
Liberal 6-4 in their opener then lost 3-1 on a controversial game-winning home
run by the host Buffaloes.

Game 1: Hays 6, Liberal 4 
The Indians scored two runs
in the fourth to break a 3-3 tie. Aubree Thomaas singled to drive in Haley
Rees. Dezarae Schmidt drove in the second run on a sacrifice fly. Hays pushed
the lead to 6-3 on a Rees single in right which drove in Elle Dreiling.

Liberal scored a run in the seventh thanks
to two singles and two walks before Riley Dreher got a strikeout to end the
game. 

Dreher went 3-for-3 with two triples
in her high school debut and picked up the complete game victory in the circle
with six strikeouts and six walks.

Game 2: Garden City 3, Hays 1 
The Buffaloes hit a controversial 2-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to
break a 1-1 tie on a ball that appeared to go wide of the foul pole but was
ruled fair.

It came after the Indians tied the
game on a Lakyn Zimmerman double to left which scored Dezarae Schmidt in the
top of the inning.

🥎 HHS splits season opener in Garden City

HAYS – The TMP-Marian softball team
opened their season with a pair of run-rule wins over Ellinwood Tuesday. The
Monarchs won by scores of 20-0 and 20-4. Both games were called after three
innings by run-rule.

The Monarchs scored 10 runs in each
of the first two innings. Jaci VonLintel and Madison Augustine each had three
of TMP’s 15 hits. VonLintel drove in six runs.

Ryersee and Brooke Koeningsman had two hits each. 

Dreiling, Augustine and Koeningsman all
had triples, VonLintel added a double.

Augustine allowed only one hit over
the three innings with six strikeouts and three walks for the win.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Fort Hays State senior distance runner&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6511">Robbie Schmidt</a>&nbsp;has been named MIAA&nbsp;Co-Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week, announced Tuesday by the league office. This is the first weekly award given out by the MIAA during the 2022 outdoor season. Schmidt broke a 53-year-old school record in the 5,000m run at the Texas Relays last Thursday (March 24). The Topeka, Kan. native shaved nearly 40 seconds off his PR, completing the race in 14:05.87. That time was good for ninth place, better than seven Division I runners. He improved the school record by close to 15 seconds, a mark that had been held by Tiger Sports Hall of Famer and Olympian Larbi Oukada since 1969 (14:20.44). To date it is the second-best time in Division II this season and is a DII provisional performance. This is Schmidt's second MIAA weekly award, joining a cross country athlete of the week honor he received last fall.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Rogers State, ranked 14th&nbsp;nationally, won the team title by 17 strokes, shooting just 4-over par as a team through two rounds. Luke Palmowski of Rogers State ran away with the tournament individually finishing at 5-under par overall. He shot 5-under in the first round to hold a one-stroke lead going into the second round, which expanded to a five-stroke win by the end of the tournament. The Tigers return to action on April 4-5 at The Mule, hosted by the University of Central Missouri at Mules National Golf Club in Warrensburg, Mo.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Fort Hays State Women's Basketball is ranked No. 7 in the final WBCA Division II Top 25 Poll of the season, released on Monday. The Tigers also finished among the Top 10 of the D2SIDA Top 25 Media Poll, ranking ninth. Fort Hays State finished another tremendous season at 30-4 overall, its third 30-plus win season under head coach&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/coaches.aspx?rc=1043">Tony Hobson</a>. The Tigers were among the Top 10 of every WBCA poll this season and held the No. 1 ranking from November 23 to December 13. FHSU notched both MIAA regular season and tournament championships in 2021-22, on its way to earning the No. 1 seed in the Central Region of the NCAA Tournament. FHSU reached the regional final on its home floor as the regional host, but fell by just one point to Missouri Western after knocking off Minnesota State and St. Cloud State in the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds. The Central Region was one of the most competitive in the country. Five of the eight teams that competed in the regional of the NCAA Tournament finished in the Top 25 and two of the remaining three were among teams to receive votes. Missouri Western vaulted back into the Top 25 at No. 12 with their run in the NCAA Tournament. The Griffons had seen time in the poll earlier in the season, including when FHSU won a regular season matchup between the teams in St. Joseph. NSIC members St. Cloud State (No. 20) and Minnesota Duluth (No. 22), along with GAC champion Southwestern Oklahoma State (No. 23) were among the Top 25. Nebraska-Kearney and Missouri Southern of the MIAA were among teams receiving votes. This was the second-straight year the Tigers finished among the Top 10 of the final WBCA Top 25 Poll. FHSU tied for 10th&nbsp;in the final poll of the 2020-21 season. It was the fourth time the Tigers finished inside the Top 10 of the WBCA poll, placed in the No. 5 spot in 2018-19 and the No. 8 spot in 2014-15. CHICAGO (AP) — Ochai Agbaji, David McCormack and Christian Braun powered a dazzling second half for Kansas, and the top-seeded Jayhawks pounded Miami 76-50 on Sunday to advance to the program's 16th Final Four.

Agbaji scored 18 points, McCormack had 15 and Braun finished with 12, helping Kansas rally after a lackluster start. The Jayhawks trailed by six points at halftime but outscored Miami 47-15 in the final 20 minutes.

Kansas (32-6), the only No. 1 seed left in the NCAA Tournament, won the Midwest Region for the 13th time with its ninth consecutive victory overall. Next up is the national semifinals and a matchup with Villanova on Saturday in New Orleans.

It's the fourth Final Four for coach Bill Self in his 19 seasons at Kansas. The last time the Jayhawks made it to the semis, they lost 95-79 to coach Jay Wright and the Wildcats in 2018.

Kameron McGusty scored 18 points and Isaiah Wong had 15 for No. 10 seed Miami in the program's first appearance in the Elite Eight. The Hurricanes (26-11) were bidding to get coach Jim Larrañaga back to the Final Four for the first time since he led 11th-seeded George Mason there in 2006.

McGusty spent two seasons at Oklahoma before transferring to Miami, averaging 13.5 points in four games against Kansas. And he looked quite comfortable playing against the Jayhawks again.

The redshirt senior guard scored 14 points to help the Hurricanes to a 35-29 halftime lead. But everything changed after the break.

With McCormack asserting himself inside and Braun and Ogbai picking up their play on the perimeter, Kansas outscored Miami 25-7 over the first 10 minutes of the second half.

Jalen Wilson made two foul shots and Agbaji connected from 3 to lift the Jayhawks to a 54-42 lead with 10:14 left. And the Big 12 champions just kept rolling.
