TOPEKA – Dylan Dreiling hit a grand
slam and drove in four runs to help the Hays High baseball team to a 14-4
win over Washburn Rural in game one of their doubleheader Tuesday outside of
Topeka. 

The Junior Blues scored 11 runs with two outs in the bottom of the
second to build a 15-5 lead in the second game before it was suspended due to darkness after two
innings. The two teams will try to complete&nbsp; the game at a later date.

The Indians are 3-0. They host
Garden City in their home opener Friday at 4:00 p.m. at Hays High.

Carson Spray (1-0) allowed two
earned runs on four hits with eight strikeouts and four walks for the win. Dreher
pitched the final 1 2/3 innings.

Game 2: Washburn Rural 15, Hays 5 (suspended
after 2 innings) The Junior Blues scored 11 runs with

and three in the second and were leading 5-4. Washburn Rural loaded the bases with

strikeout but WR got a single followed by four walks and a hit batter.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Best. Comeback. Ever. Sounds pretty good next to Rock Chalk, Jayhawk.

What looked like a lost cause turned into one of the sweetest wins ever for Kansas.

The Jayhawks brought their fourth NCAA title back to Allen Fieldhouse on Monday thanks to a second-half flurry that erased a 16-point deficit and eventually overcame North Carolina 72-69 in an epic battle of power programs.

It was the largest comeback in national championship history, surpassing the 1963 title game when Loyola overcame a 15-point deficit to beat Cincinnati at the buzzer, 60-58.

“We just locked in as a family, as a team, and that’s what we do,” said Kansas big man David McCormack, after making last two baskets of the game. “We overcome the odds. We overcome adversity. We’re just built for this.”

McCormack scored the go-ahead bucket from close range with 1:21 left, then another at the 22-second mark to put the Jayhawks ahead by three.

North Carolina missed its final four shots, including Caleb Love’s desperation 3 at the buzzer. His heave came up short after officials ruled that Kansas guard DaJuan Harris Jr., stepped out on an inbounds pass with 4.3 seconds left.

The Tar Heels went scoreless over the final 1:41. They couldn't find an answer for KU over the final 20 minutes.

“They were penetrating and doing whatever they wanted,” Love said.

After McCormick’s go-ahead bucket, Love drove to the basket but his shot got blocked. North Carolina grabbed an offensive rebound and got the ball to Armando Bacot under the bucket. But he lost his footing and turned it over, then limped off the court, unable to return.

“I thought I really got the angle that I wanted and then I just rolled my ankle," Bacot said.

That put Brady Manek, not as good a defender, on McCormack, and the Kansas big man backed in Manek for the shot that put the Jayhawks ahead by three.

“When we had to have a basket, we went to Big Dave, and he delivered,” said Kansas coach Bill Self, who has two of the program's four championships.

McCormack and Jalen Wilson led KU with 15 points each. Christian Braun scored 10 of his 12 in the second half and transfer Remy Martin had 11 of his 14 over the final 20 minutes. The Jayhawks outscored Carolina 47-29 in the second half.

“When we saw our own blood, we didn’t panic and we came out the second half coming in hot,” Self said. “I was thinking at the 14-minute mark, ‘There’s no way these guys can play for 20 minutes defense like this,' but they did.”

The Tar Heels shot 11 for 40 in the second half.

But it was Kansas that couldn't buy a basket late in the first half, as Carolina ran over and around the Jayhawks during a 16-0 run. The Tar Heels led 40-25 at the break. Then, top-seeded KU (34-6) started trapping and pressing more, moving the ball around on offense, and Carolina started getting a taste of what everyone else has this season: You can't stop 'em all.

The Jayhawks went on a 31-10 run to take a six-point lead at the 10-minute mark and set up a fantastic finish.

Bacot had 15 points and 15 rebounds to become the first player to record double-doubles in all six tournament games. He finished the season with 31 double-doubles, but it was not enough. Carolina was trying to join 1985 Villanova as only the second 8 seed to win March Madness.

Instead, the Tar Heels (29-10) fell one win short and dropped to 6-6 all-time in title games. This was their record 21st — and possibly most unlikely — trip to the Final Four. They made it to the final by beating Duke in a back-and-forth thriller and sending Blue Devils coach Mike Krzyzewski into retirement.

“I can’t remember a time in my life where I should be disappointed," said rookie UNC coach Hubert Davis, who was trying to become the first person to lead a team to a title in his first full year as head coach. "But I am filled with so much pride.”

A great season — but the banner will hang in Lawrence.

And McCormack, thanks to his late-game heroics, will go down in KU lore, along with Mario Chalmers (2008), Danny Manning (and the miracles in 1988) and the rest of the Kansas greats.

This title was three years in the making. KU was 28-3 and the odds-on favorite heading into March of 2020. Then, the COVID-19 pandemic hit and stopped both the Jayhawks, and the season, in their tracks.

Seven players from that roster are on this one, as well. In some of their minds there were no “what-might-have-beens” about 2020 -- they knew they would have won it. They won this one instead, and showed, once again, it’s never good to count them out.

While this wasn't quite the 47-15 beatdown they put on Miami over the final 20 minutes in the Elite Eight, it was still darn impressive given the circumstances.

Ochai Agbaji, who was named the Final Four's most outstanding player, finished with 12 points and found breathing room after UNC’s lockdown guard, Leaky Black, got his fourth foul 6 minutes into the second half.

Sounds pretty good next to Rock Chalk, Jayhawk.What looked like a lost cause turned into one of the sweetest wins ever for Kansas.The Jayhawks brought their fourth NCAA title back to Allen Fieldhouse on Monday thanks to a second-half flurry that erased a 16-point deficit and eventually overcame North Carolina 72-69 in an epic battle of power programs.It was the largest comeback in national championship history, surpassing the 1963 title game when Loyola overcame a 15-point deficit to beat Cincinnati at the buzzer, 60-58.“We just locked in as a family, as a team, and that’s what we do,” said Kansas big man David McCormack, after making last two baskets of the game. “We overcome the odds. We overcome adversity. We’re just built for this.”McCormack scored the go-ahead bucket from close range with 1:21 left, then another at the 22-second mark to put the Jayhawks ahead by three.North Carolina missed its final four shots, including Caleb Love’s desperation 3 at the buzzer. His heave came up short after officials ruled that Kansas guard DaJuan Harris Jr., stepped out on an inbounds pass with 4.3 seconds left.The Tar Heels went scoreless over the final 1:41. They couldn't find an answer for KU over the final 20 minutes.“They were penetrating and doing whatever they wanted,” Love said.After McCormick’s go-ahead bucket, Love drove to the basket but his shot got blocked. Then, the COVID-19 pandemic hit and stopped both the Jayhawks, and the season, in their tracks.Seven players from that roster are on this one, as well. In some of their minds there were no “what-might-have-beens” about 2020 -- they knew they would have won it. They won this one instead, and showed, once again, it’s never good to count them out.While this wasn't quite the 47-15 beatdown they put on Miami over the final 20 minutes in the Elite Eight, it was still darn impressive given the circumstances.Ochai Agbaji, who was named the Final Four's most outstanding player, finished with 12 points and found breathing room after UNC’s lockdown guard, Leaky Black, got his fourth foul 6 minutes into the second half.“This is a special group of guys," Agbaji said. Nicknamed "Air Parrish" for his multiple, pass-oriented offensive strategy, Parrish came to Manhattan in 1986 after serving the previous two seasons as the head coach at Marshall. Parrish's career began at Windham High School in Windham, Ohio, before serving as a graduate assistant for two years at Purdue and one season as an assistant coach at Division III Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana. He quickly took over as head coach of the Little Giants in 1978, putting together a 42-3-1 record over five seasons, which included a perfect 10-0 mark in his final season in 1982. Following his time at K-State, Parrish worked for six years at Rutgers before serving as the quarterbacks coach at Michigan from 1996 to 2001. While in Ann Arbor, he tutored future NFL quarterbacks Brian Griese and Tom Brady, while he helped the Wolverines win a national championship in 1997. Parrish moved on to the NFL, serving as the quarterbacks coach for Tampa Bay in 2002 and 2003, helping the Buccaneers win Super Bowl XXXVI. He moved back to the college ranks in 2005 to coach at Ball State, a place he stayed for six seasons, which included the final three years as head coach. His last stint as a football coach came at Eastern Michigan, where he was the offensive coordinator and later the interim head coach in 2013. Parrish is survived by his wife, the former Ruth Purdy, son Andrew and daughter Libby. He earned his bachelor's degree from Heidelberg in 1969, where he played defensive back from 1965-68.&nbsp;&nbsp;

with an 11-over-par 83 and tied for fifth place, six shots behind tournament

JOPLIN, Mo. - Fort Hays State fell in the series finale to Missouri Southern by a score of 7-0 on Sunday. Missouri Southern swept the three-game series on its home field.

The Tigers compiled six hits, including&nbsp;Mason Holton&nbsp;and&nbsp;Conner Kessler&nbsp;each with a pair. Lion starter Cole Woods threw five scoreless innings and struck out five. MSSU opted to use six relievers following Woods, all throwing an inning or less.

The Lions scored five runs in the first inning before adding another in the second and their final run in the seventh inning.

Jake Campbell&nbsp;threw six complete innings in his start and allowed six runs on nine hits, but did not walk anyone and had two strikeouts.&nbsp;Cole Zimmerman&nbsp;and&nbsp;Jacob Douglas&nbsp;pitched the seventh and eighth innings respectively and each recorded a strikeout. Douglas kept the Lions scoreless in his inning of work.

The Tigers will be back at home on Wednesday when they host Washburn in a single non-conference game. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Larks Park.&nbsp;&nbsp;

⚾ Lions sweep Tigers in Joplin

KEARNEY, Neb. - The Fort Hays State track and field team posted 11 provisional performances and captured 15 first-place finishes at the Central Nebraska Challenge Saturday. The women's team totaled five provisional marks and eight event victories, while the men collected six provisionals and seven individual wins.

Lyric Holman&nbsp;won both the 100m dash and the 200m dash with a pair of provisional marks, running the 100m race in 11.66 and the 200m dash in 23.94.&nbsp;Mattie Rossi&nbsp;also took home a pair of titles and multiple provisional marks in both hurdle races. The junior won the 100m hurdles in 13.93 and the 400m hurdles in 1:01.06.&nbsp;Addie Berens&nbsp;was first in the javelin throw with a top heave of 144-3, good for her second provisional mark in as many weeks.

Gretchen Kuffel&nbsp;finished first in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 11:12.71, less than one second off the school record.&nbsp;Halle Johnson&nbsp;won the 1,500m run with a time of 4:41,16, good for fourth at FHSU during the DII era.&nbsp;Taylor Savolt&nbsp;won the triple jump with a top distance of 38-4.75, good for sixth on the DII era performance chart. She also moved up to third on the 400m hurdles top 10 list with a time of 1:02.61, finishing second.&nbsp;Jessie Castellucci&nbsp;placed sixth in the hammer throw with a top heave of 162-8, good for seventh on the DII era performance list at FHSU.

On the men's side,&nbsp;Philip Landrum&nbsp;won the 100m dash with a provisional qualifying time of 10.41. He later teamed up with&nbsp;Cole Diffenbaugh,&nbsp;Hayden Albright&nbsp;and&nbsp;Xavier Robinson&nbsp;to win the 4x100m relay with a time of 40.54. Robinson also had a win of his own, placing first in the triple jump with a provisional leap of 49-5, good for third on the FHSU DII era performance chart.&nbsp;Jacob Clark&nbsp;placed first in the pole vault with a provisional clearance of 16-8.75.

Ethan Lang&nbsp;ran a provisional time of 1:49.76 in the 800m run, placing third and moving into second on the FHSU DII era performance chart.&nbsp;David Enns&nbsp;surpassed the provisional distance in the javelin, finishing second with a top mark of 194-9.

The Tigers also came away victorious in the 4x400m relay, with Albright,&nbsp;Kaden Wren,&nbsp;Trever Medina&nbsp;and Lang combining for a time of 3:16.32.Outside the two relays, Albright also has a pair of event wins in the 200m dash and the 400m dash. His time of 21.52 in the 200m dash is 10th-best at FHSU during the DII era, while his mark of 48.02 in the 400m race is 6th on the DII era performance chart.

Medina finished just behind Lang in fourth in the 800m run, crossing the line in 1:52.55 to move to 10th on the DII era performance chart.&nbsp;Jack Pakkebier&nbsp;finished third in the 400m hurdles with a time of 55.13, good for seventh on the DII era top 10 list.

The Tigers will next compete at the KT Woodman Classic in Wichita, Kan. April 6-9.

The women's team totaled five provisional marks and eight event victories, while the men collected six provisionals and seven individual wins.Lyric Holman&nbsp;won both the 100m dash and the 200m dash with a pair of provisional marks, running the 100m race in 11.66 and the 200m dash in 23.94.&nbsp;Mattie Rossi&nbsp;also took home a pair of titles and multiple provisional marks in both hurdle races. JOPLIN, Mo. - Fort Hays State managed only one run on Saturday, which resulted in a pair of losses to Missouri Southern. The Lions took game one 8-0 by run rule in six innings, then scored twice in the sixth inning of game two to break a tie late and won 3-1. Missouri Southern moved to 20-15 overall and 8-4 in the MIAA, while FHSU is now 16-19-1 overall and 2-6 in the MIAA.

Game 1: Missouri Southern 8, Fort Hays State 0 The Lions took control of game one early with four runs in the first. They loaded the bases and then went on to get a pair of 2-RBI singles back-to-back for the early cushion. The Tigers had run-scoring opportunities in the first, second, and third innings, but could not cash anything in. The Lions went on to add two runs in the fourth, one in the fifth, and one in the sixth to force the run rule.

Savanah Egger&nbsp;had a tough time finding outs in the first inning and lasted just a third of an inning with four hits and a walk allowed. She allowed the first four runs to the Lions.&nbsp;Morgan Schmidt&nbsp;came in an stopped the Lions from any further damage in the first inning and pitched the remaining 4.2 innings. Two of the four runs she allowed were unearned. She struck out one. Kara Amos pitched a complete game for the Lions, allowing five hits and three walks. She struck out four.

The Tigers' five hits were scattered over five different players, including&nbsp;Jessica Espinoza,&nbsp;Loren Beggs,&nbsp;Sara Breckbill,&nbsp;Regan Curry, and&nbsp;Kiana Blake.

A strikeout gave the Lions one out, then&nbsp;Sara Breckbill&nbsp;tied the game with a sacrifice fly to center field. The Lions picked up the third out after that and kept the game tied 1-1.

The Lions started their sixth-inning rally by leading the inning off with a walk. After a stolen base, a double broke the tie and then a dropped fly ball on what would have been the third out of the inning allowed another run to score. The Tigers did not have a late rally in them for a second straight day as they fell 3-1.

Bailey Lacy pitched a complete game for the Lions with four hits and three walks. She struck out nine. Carlson also threw a complete game for the Tigers, allowing five hits and two walks. The last of her three runs allowed was unearned.

The Tigers will be at home next weekend to host Washburn and Emporia State in MIAA play. The Tigers take on Washburn on Friday at Tiger Stadium starting at 2 pm.

The Lopers swept doubles play and won all of the singles matches in straight sets. The No. 3 team of&nbsp;Kylie Aufdengarten&nbsp;and&nbsp;Aliyah Frederick&nbsp;won the most games within their doubles match, falling 6-3.

🎾 Tigers drop home match to Lopers

JOPLIN, Mo. - The Fort Hays State baseball team dropped game two of its weekend series against Missouri Southern on Saturday by a score of 10-0.

The Tigers collected singles from&nbsp;Ed Scott,&nbsp;Kade Wallace&nbsp;and&nbsp;Ty Campbell&nbsp;in the first, second and fourth innings respectively, but the Tigers were stifled by Lion starter Logan VanWey otherwise. The righty struck out 14 batters over seven innings of work. Campbell also worked a walk in the seventh, ending a stretch of eight straight retired Tiger batters.

Missouri Southern scored five runs in the first inning before adding two in the third, one in the fourth and two in the seventh.

Hunter Parker&nbsp;(0-7) took the loss after allowing seven runs on nine hits and three walks over three innings of work. He struck out one Lion batter.&nbsp;Padraic Walsh&nbsp;finished the job for the Tigers, surrendering three runs on five hits and one walk over 3.2 innings of relief while striking out five MSSU hitters.

The Tigers and Lions will face off in the series finale Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/index.aspx">FHSU Athletics</a>JOPLIN, Mo. - The Fort Hays State baseball team dropped game two of its weekend series against Missouri Southern on Saturday by a score of 10-0.The Tigers collected singles from&nbsp;Ed Scott,&nbsp;Kade Wallace&nbsp;and&nbsp;Ty Campbell&nbsp;in the first, second and fourth innings respectively, but the Tigers were stifled by Lion starter Logan VanWey otherwise. The righty struck out 14 batters over seven innings of work. Campbell also worked a walk in the seventh, ending a stretch of eight straight retired Tiger batters.Missouri Southern scored five runs in the first inning before adding two in the third, one in the fourth and two in the seventh.Hunter Parker&nbsp;(0-7) took the loss after allowing seven runs on nine hits and three walks over three innings of work. He struck out one Lion batter.&nbsp;Padraic Walsh&nbsp;finished the job for the Tigers, surrendering three runs on five hits and one walk over 3.2 innings of relief while striking out five MSSU hitters.The Tigers and Lions will face off in the series finale Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;

LIBERAL - Dylan Dreiling had seven hits including three home runs to help the Hays High baseball team to a&nbsp; doubleheader sweep of Liberal in their season-opener. The Indians beat the Redskins 12-2 and 10-0 to move to 2-0 overall and in Western Athletic Conference play. The Redskins fall to 2-3 and 0-3 in the WAC.&nbsp;

Game 1: Hays 12, Liberal 2 After giving up a pair of unearned runs in the first and second innings, the Indians scored 12 unanswered to win their season opener.

Dylan Dreiling gave them the lead for good with a three-run homer over the right field wall in the third. Dreiling also doubled and finished 4-for-5 with four RBIs .&nbsp;

Garrett Wellbrock went 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI. Brayden Dreher also added two hits and drove in a run.&nbsp; 

Wellbrock's triple scored Dalton Dale to push the lead to 5-2 in the fourth. Dreiling followed with a double to right which scored Wellbrock give Hays a 6-2 lead.

Wellbrock (1-0) went the distance on the mound allowing two unearned runs on three hits with a career-high eight strikeouts and only one walk.&nbsp;

Game 2: Hays 10, Liberal 0 Dreiling had three more hits, two of the home runs, and drove in five runs. His three-run&nbsp; blast gave the Indians a 3-0 lead in the top of the second. Dreiling added a two-run shot in the top of seventh to close out the scoring.

Brayden Dreher had two hits and drove in two runs.

Blake Schmidt (1-0) pitched six shutout innings allowing four hits with four walks and four strikeouts.

Dalton Dale pitched the ninth and gave up a hit and struck out one.

The Indians are back on the road Tuesday when they play at Washburn Rural.

HAYS – The TMP-Marian softball team split a home doubleheader
Friday against Goodland with the Cowgirls winning a wild game one and the
Monarchs rallying for a win in game two.

In the first game of the doubleheader Goodland scored in every
inning back one and took advantage of eight TMP errors in a 21-17 win.

Goodland opened the game with their first six hitters
reaching base, three&nbsp; of them on errors
and they would all comes in to score as part of a six-run first.

In the bottom of the inning the Monarchs countered by second
11 hitters to the plate in a five-run bottom of the first. TMP scored a pair of
run on a Jaci VonLintel singe, Karli Komarek drove in a run on a sacrifice fly,
a Halle Dreiling single and a wild pitch making it 6-5 Goodland.

Goodland added four runs, with two outs, in the second
inning and led 10-5.

Alexa Reyersee’s two-run second inning second pulled TMP
back within three at 10-7.

After the Cowgirls scored another run in the top of third to
lead 11-7, TMP answered with a four-run bottom of the inning. 

Hannah Garcia drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Brooke
Koenigsman followed with an RBI single. The with two aboard VonLintel hit her
first homerun of the season, a two-run shot to center field tying the game at
11.

Goodland added a single run in the fifth and then came all
the way back to take the lead with a five-run sixth. They added four more in
the seventh to take a 21-13 lead through six and a half innings. 

The Monarchs scored four runs with two outs but the come
back came up short in a 21-17 Goodland win.

TMP’s Jaci VonLintel was two-for-four with a home run, four
RBI’s and four runs scored. Halle Dreiling and Karlli Komarek also each drovee
in three runs. 

Madison Augustine went the distance in the circle for TMP
and suffered the loss.

The second game starter a lot like the first for TMP. Goodland
got a walk, reached on a TMP error and a three-run homerun to open the game. A
sacrifice fly gave Goodland a 4-0 lead after the top of the first inning.

TMP’s Brooke Koenigsman drove in the Monarchs only run in
the first making it 4-1.

Goodland scored on a TMP error in the third to take a 5-1 lead.

Down four TMP scored single runs in each of the third and
four innings and then the offense exploded for 10 runs in the fifth inning
taking a 13-5 lead.

In the inning the Monarchs scored on four wild pitches,
three errors, a VonLintel triple, a Jessica Herrman sacrifice fly and a Hannah
Garcia RBI single.

Goodland would get two runs back in the six and a run in the
seventh but the Monarchs were able to get the 13-8 win.

Jaci VonLintel drove in three runs in the second game. Halle
Dreiling and Hannah Garcia each scored three times.

After taking the loss in the first game, Madison Augustin
got the win in game two. 

TMP is 3-1 and travel to Colby for a doubleheader on Tuesday.
