Fort Hays State Men's Basketball returned to the receiving votes list of the NABC Division II Top 25 Poll this week, released on Tuesday (Feb. 1). The Tigers received 14 voting points in the poll this week, just nine shy of cracking the Top 25. Fort Hays State is the second-highest listed team outside the Top 25, only behind Union which received 15 votes this week. Mercyhurst, ranked No. 25, received 23 voting points. The Central Region is stacked right now with five teams inside the Top 25 Poll. Northwest Missouri State is the highest ranked of that bundle at No. 4, followed by Minnesota Duluth at No. 7, Augustana at No. 11, Central Oklahoma at No. 16, and Upper Iowa at No. 19. 🏀 Tiger men receiving votes in NABC Top 25 poll

Fort Hays State Women's Basketball nudged up one spot in both the D2SIDA and WBCA National Polls, the latest editions released on Tuesday (Feb. 1). The Tigers are now No. 5 in the D2SIDA Poll and No. 6 in the WBCA Poll. They received one first-place vote in the D2SIDA poll. The Tigers (17-2, 11-2 MIAA) went 1-0 last week, picking up a big win over nationally ranked Nebraska-Kearney on the road. The Lopers remained in the WBCA Top 25, but dipped to the receiving votes list in the D2SIDA poll. Missouri Western is also among the Top 25 of the WBCA poll. Undefeated Glenville State remains No. 1 in the WBCA poll and No. 2 in the D2SIDA poll. Ashland is No. 1 in the D2SIDA poll and No. 2 in the WBCA poll. Fort Hays State holds a half-game lead in the MIAA standings at 11-2, while Nebraska-Kearney and Missouri Southern are 11-3. KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State pole vaulter&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6513">Ryan Stanley</a>&nbsp;was named the MIAA Men's Field Athlete of the Week on Tuesday (Feb. 1). Stanley won the men's pole vault at the Charlie Foster Classic in Kearney, Nebraska this past weekend. Stanley cleared 16 feet, 6 inches on his first attempt. The rest of the field was out of the competition before Stanley even attempted his first jump. He is currently ranked first on the NCAA DII performance chart with a season-best clearance of 17-0.75, while this week's effort would have been fourth best on the national performance list. Stanley was NCAA Division II outdoor national champion in the pole vault last year and finished fourth nationally during the indoor season.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Hays High boys jump up one spot to No. 3 in Class 5A. Kapaun Mt. Carmel remains No. 1 and Topeka West No. 2. Highland Park drops two spots to No. 4.

The TMP-Marian girls move up one in Class 3A to No. 9. Goodland holds at the No. 7 spot. Silver Lake is at the top of 3A this week, replacing Nickerson who falls to fourth.

The Trego boys stay at No. 8 and Ellinwood No. 6 in 2A boys. Smith Center remains at No. 7 in 2A girls.

The Osborne boys fall one spot to No. 4 while the Osborne girls hold at No. 6 in 1A Division I.

The Hays High boys wrestling team continues to have three boys and one girl ranked in the latest Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association poll which was released Tuesday.

Gavin Meyers continues to hold down the top spot in the 220 pound weight class. Meyers recorded four more pins over the weekend and was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler in the upper weight divisions at the Rocky Welton Invitational hosted by Garden City HS. Harley Zimmerman remains fourth at 132 while Gavin Nutting dropped a spot to No. 5 at heavyweight.

Sarah Zimmerman remains No. 1 at 109 in 6-5A girls.

This past weekend's Mid-Continent League Tournament may have been a preview of the 3-2-1A State Tournament. The league has seven teams ranked this week. Hoxie is No. 1, Norton No. 2, Plainville No. 3, Oakley No. 4, Russell No. 5, Phillipsburg No. 8 and Hill City No. 9.

Plainville has four individuals ranked. Ben Hansen is second at 182, Logan Normandin third at 132, Kyle Werner fourth at 195 and Draxton Hovis fifth at 220.

Ellis has three ranked. Mason Younger is third at 120, George Crawford fifth at 160 and Mason Gottschalk fifth at 182.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Tom Brady, the most successful quarterback in NFL history, has retired after winning seven Super Bowls and setting numerous passing records in an unprecedented 22-year career.

“This is difficult for me to write, but here it goes: I am not going to make that competitive commitment anymore,” Brady wrote in a lengthy post on Instagram. “I have loved my NFL career, and now it is time to focus my time and energy on other things that require my attention.”

Brady has long stated his desire to spend more time with his wife, supermodel Gisele Bundchen, and three children despite still playing at the top of his game.

The 44-year-old Brady goes out after leading the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a Super Bowl title last season and NFC South championship this season.

News of Brady’s pending retirement leaked Saturday. His family and the Buccaneers denied that he had made a final decision, and he said Monday night on his SiriusXM podcast he wasn’t ready to finalize his plans.

“I’ve done a lot of reflecting the past week and have asked myself difficult questions,” Brady said in his post. “And I am so proud of what we have achieved. My teammates, coaches, fellow competitors, and fans deserve 100% of me, but right now, it’s best I leave the field of play to the next generation of dedicated and committed athletes.”

Brady thanked the Buccaneers organization, his teammates, ownership, general manager Jason Licht, coach Bruce Arians, his trainer Alex Guerrero, agents Don Yee and Steve Dubin and his family in his nine-page post. He didn’t mention the New England Patriots, where he spent his first 20 seasons and won six Super Bowls. Of course, Brady thanked the Patriots and coach Bill Belichick after he left the team to sign with the Buccaneers in March 2020.

“To the Glazer family, thank you for taking a chance on me and supporting me,” Brady said of the Bucs’ owners. “I know I was demanding at times, but you provided everything we needed to win, and your ownership was everything a player could ask for.”

Brady said he’s still figuring out how he’ll spend his time but he plans to be involved in his TB12 health and wellness company, Brady clothing line and NFT company.

Ellis High's senior wrestlers will be honored this week

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Tyrann Mathieu walked off the field in stunned disappointment, his hopes of playing in a third straight Super Bowl dashed by Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals, and spent a moment dressing in a somber Kansas City Chiefs locker room.

The time spent composing himself hardly helped Mathieu keep his emotions in check.

“I think the immature person in me would probably say, you know, we failed,” Mathieu said after a 27-24 overtime loss to the Bengals on Sunday night ended his season and, just maybe, his successful three-year run in Kansas City.

“I think the bigger person in me realizes these things aren't always possible,” he continued. “We have a lot of motivation. I know there's a lot of guys in that locker room, they're going to take this offseason personally to really get better, because we do feel like we're the best team in the NFL. But the best team doesn't always win.”

Just the best team on the day. On Sunday, that was Cincinnati.

But despite blowing a 21-3 first-half lead, and an interception by Patrick Mahomes in overtime that allowed the Bengals to set up the winning field goal, the Chiefs still accomplished plenty this season: They won their record sixth straight AFC West title, beat the Bills in the divisional round in one of the greatest finishes ever and became the first team to host four straight AFC title games.

If not for a second half to forget, a costly mistake in overtime and some poise beyond their years from Burrow and the long-downtrodden Bengals, they would be playing in a third straight Super Bowl, too.

Instead, they turned their attention Monday to an offseason filled with hope, uncertainty and, yes, frustration.

The Chiefs return most of their star players, including Mahomes, wide receiver Tyreek Hill, tight end Travis Kelce and defensive tackle Chris Jones, all of whom are signed to long-term contracts.

But Mathieu is among those players whose deals are set to expire, and the inevitable offseason turnover is sure to create a much different team for next season.

“I'm proud of these guys. You look at the season we had, to be in this game in general — it's a special group of guys that battled through adversity,” said Mahomes, who helped Chiefs to an about-face after a dismal 3-4 start to the season. “But the guys know the standard is winning the Super Bowl. When you've done that, nothing less is success.”

The Chiefs and Mathieu's representatives tried last offseason to reach an agreement on a contract extension, and both sides hope they can still work something out. But the asking price might have gone up even more given the fact that Mathieu has followed up two All-Pro nods his first two seasons in Kansas City with a third straight Pro Bowl trip.

“I've tried to be the right kind of teammate. I've tried to play my part and you know, obviously, there's always a feeling that you can make more plays," he said, “but I'm hoping it works out.”

Mathieu is but one important defensive piece hitting free agency. Defensive tackle Jarran Reed, cornerbacks Mike Hughes and Charvarius Ward, and defensive end Melvin Ingram are also on the market.

The Chiefs sent their first-round pick and three other selections to the Ravens last year for Orlando Brown Jr., who played well at left tackle this season. And while Brown is also due to hit free agency, it's unlikely that the Chiefs would let him walk after having spent so much draft capital just to acquire him.

Wide receivers Byron Pringle and Demarcus Robinson also are free agents, and the Josh Gordon experiment was a flop, so Kansas City is in the market for help at that position.

Defensive end Frank Clark has two more years left on his contract, but the his salary cap hit is more than $26 million each of those years, and the Chiefs could save a hefty amount by cutting ties this offseason. They also need to weigh his legal troubles: He was arrested twice last offseason and those issues should sort themselves out this offseason.

“Kansas City is home. I bought a house here. My daughter goes to school here. It's home,” he said. “I want to be here for the future, the rest of my career. But unfortunately, the way the business goes, things don't always happen the way you want.”

The biggest problem facing Chiefs general manager Brett Veach last offseason was fixing an offensive line decimated by injuries and dismantled by Tampa Bay in the Super Bowl. He did it with five new faces that played well all season.

There is no such glaring weakness heading into this offseason, though there are smaller holes to fill. Wide receiver is one of them, and so is defensive end, particularly if they allow Clark to leave.

The loss to Cincinnati leaves the Chiefs with the 30th overall pick in the April draft. The question now is whether they will use it. Kansas City has only used its first-round pick once in the past four years, and that was for underwhelming running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire, whose history of injuries have him on the brink of becoming a bust.

They also have one pick each in the second, third and fourth rounds, but none in the fifth or the sixth.

Budke adds this honor to four other national first team selections at tight end for the 2021 season. Budke received the same distinction from the AFCA, D2CCA, and Associated Press, while earning first-team honors on the D2Football.com Elite 100 list. He finished the 2021 season with 47 receptions for 620 yards and eight touchdowns. Angram-Boldin earns the first All-America distinction of his career with the honorable mention nod. He was a three-time All-MIAA selection for the Tigers, including first-team honors in 2021. He was also an All-Super Region 3 First Team selection by the D2CCA in 2021. He made 34 consecutive starts for the Tigers dating back to the start of his sophomore season of 2018. He helped the Tigers to back-to-back MIAA Championships in 2017 and 2018 and the Tigers had a record of 33-13 during his four years on the field. The&nbsp;Don Hansen&nbsp;team carries out the legacy of long-time small college football advocate Don Hansen, who passed away at age 75 on Aug. 29, 2010. Hansen, from Brookfield, Ill., started and published&nbsp;Don Hansen's National Weekly Football Gazette&nbsp;for three decades, selecting NCAA Division II All-America teams for the first time in 1988.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs followed perhaps the greatest 13 seconds in franchise history in the divisional round against the Bills with 13 seconds late in the first half of the AFC title game against Cincinnati that they'd rather just forget.

Not to mention most of the next 30 minutes and overtime.

In a loss both heartbreaking and humiliating, one of the league's prolific offenses failed to put the game away just before the break Sunday, then never reached the end zone in the second half. The Bengals took advantage of Kansas City's many mistakes to dig out of a 21-3 hole, force overtime and watch Evan McPherson drill a 31-yard field goal for a 27-24 victory, giving the long-downtrodden franchise its first conference championship in 33 years.

“It's definitely disappointing,” said Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who threw for 275 yards and three touchdowns but also had two second-half interceptions, including one in overtime that gave the Bengals the chance to drive for the win.

“With this group of guys we have,” Mahomes said, “we expect to win that game and anything less is not success.”

As the Bengals spilled off the sideline in celebration, the Chiefs slumped in their seats — a complete reversal of the previous week, when the Chiefs beat the Bills in overtime in one of the most exhilarating games in NFL history.

Making the about-face all the more shocking was that it was the Chiefs' offense that let them down.

Mahomes was 18 of 21 for 220 yards and three scores in the first half, finding Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce for big gains almost at will. His quarterback rating was nearly perfect, as was the Kansas City offense, and coach Andy Reid's team built a 21-10 lead and was 30 minutes away from a third straight trip to the Super Bowl.

The only flub came when the Chiefs had the ball first-and-goal at the Bengals 5 with — you guessed it — 13 seconds left, the exact same amount of time it took them to drive 44 yards for the field goal to force overtime against Buffalo.

This time, Mahomes threw incomplete on first down. Then he completed a short pass to Hill, who was stopped short of the goal line as the clock expired, and Kansas City squandered a chance to extend its lead.

“We were trying to score a touchdown,” Reid said, “so any way we could score a touchdown, we were trying. In hindsight, I would tell you the passes weren't working. We should try to run it. We were just trying to get in the end zone.”

It turned out to be a harbinger of the rest of the game.

The Chiefs punted on each of their first two second-half possessions. The third ended when Mahomes had a pass batted in the air and caught by 311-pound defensive tackle B.J. Hill, setting up Joe Burrow's touchdown pass to Ja'Marr Chase and the ensuing 2-point conversion that tied the game 21-all heading to the fourth quarter.

Then the Chiefs' offensive line, which had run over the Bengals in the first half, began letting them down. Hill and Trey Hendrickson combined on a sack to force a three-and-out, then Hendrickson had a sack of his own to force another three-and-out, that one giving the Bengals an opportunity to march downfield for a go-ahead field goal.

The Chiefs finally showed some resolve, answering 21 straight points by Cincinnati with a long drive of their own. But the red zone left them seeing red one more time: With first-and-goal and less than 2 minutes left, Jerick McKinnon was stuffed and Mahomes was sacked by Sam Hubbard on back-to-back plays.

The Chiefs were fortunate that Harrison Butker, whose 49-yarder sent the Chiefs to overtime with Buffalo, calmly drilled another one from 44 yards at the opposite end of the field to keep their Super Bowl hopes alive.

And it appeared fate was shining on the Chiefs once again when backup Bengals quarterback Brandon Allen called heads and the coin flip landed tails — the exact opposite result of the previous week, when Bills quarterback Josh Allen called tails and the Chiefs took the only possession of overtime for the winning score.

That's where the similarities ended, though.

Mahomes threw an incomplete pass, then nearly had a pass picked by Bengals cornerback Eli Apple, before launching a throw toward Hill down the sideline. The ball was batted in the air by Jessie Bates III, who was perfectly position to make the play, and into the waiting hands of Bengals safety Vonn Bell.

Burrow and the Bengals didn't give Kansas City another chance.

With the game now sudden death, they breezed downfield and into the range of McPherson, who turned around in triumph even before his winning kick had passed through the uprights inside stunned Arrowhead Stadium.

“You know, deflated would be a good way to describe it,” Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu said. “But I'm proud of the way we continued to fight throughout the season. I'm proud of the way we stuck together, proud of our coaches, proud of the way we continue to take bullets for us. It's a lot of good to think about. I'm grateful for the opportunity. But I think any time you come up short, you know you could be better, it's obviously deflating.”

🏈 Mistakes on offense cost Chiefs 3rd straight Super Bowl trip

HAYS, Kan. - The seventh-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team used a dominant second half to storm from behind and defeat No. 17 Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday, 76-63. The Tigers (17-2, 11-2 MIAA) trailed by as many as 14 for the second game in a row before rallying for another win, allowing FHSU to overtake first place in the MIAA standings.

The Tigers struggled in the first half, hitting just 34.5 percent (10-of-29) from the floor while allowing the Lopers&nbsp;(16-4, 11-3 MIAA) a shooting percentage of 55.2 percent (16-of-29). Fort Hays State kept things somewhat close thanks to five 3-pointers before intermission, including two each from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6439">Whitney Randall</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6444">Kate Dilsaver</a>. After trailing by 10 at the break, 39-29, Fort Hays State started the comeback right away in the third quarter. The Tigers scored the first five points and 10 of the first 12 to close within two, 41-39. The Tigers finished the game shooting 47.3 percent from the floor (26-of-55), 47.4 percent from behind the arc (9-of-19) and 88.2 percent from the charity stripe (88.2 percent). FHSU limited the Lopers to a shooting percentage of 33.3 percent in the second half, good for a 44.6 percent effort for the game. Dilsaver led the Tigers with a career-high 14 points, while Randall (13 points), Hobbs (11 points) and Wagner (11 points) also reached double figures. Bergmann led the team with five rebounds alongside nine points, with Hobbs dishing out a team-high five assists. Fort Hays State turned the ball over a season-low six times while scoring 14 points off 11 Loper turnovers. 🏀 Second-half rally lifts No. 7 FHSU women past No. 17 Nebraska-Kearney

KEARNEY, Neb. – Fort Hays State turned in a very efficient effort on Saturday, defeating Nebraska-Kearney 71-56 at the Health and Sports Center. The Tigers shot 63 percent from the field overall, led by as many as 25, and as the nation's top scoring defense held another opponent inside 60 points. FHSU moved to 15-3 overall and 10-3 in the MIAA, while UNK moved to 7-12 overall and 3-10 in the MIAA.

The Tigers torched the nets in the first half at a 69.6 percent rate, going 16-of-23 from the field. They carved up the Loper defense getting to the basket several times for close range looks and still went 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, UNK scored 21 of its 26 first half points on 3-point field goals, but otherwise the FHSU defense held them to just 32.1 percent shooting overall. Put those together and the Tigers had a 14-point lead at halftime, 40-26.

The Tigers continued to pull away in the second half and took their lead out to 25, 58-33, with 11:17 to play. Eventually the Lopers cut the lead back down to 14, but it was too big of a mountain to climb on their home floor. The Tigers coasted to a 15-point win, finishing at a season-best 63 percent overall from the field (29-of-46). It set a new season high in field goal percentage for the second-straight game after hitting at a 54.9 percent clip at Missouri Western.

The Lopers had a hard time defending&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6460">Kaleb Hammeke</a>, who finished with 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the field with four made free throws added in.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6468">Jared Vitztum</a>&nbsp;followed with 15 points and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6470">Nyjee Wright</a>&nbsp;reached double figures with 10.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6465">Gilbert Peters</a>&nbsp;gave the Tigers a big spark off the bench in the first half, finishing a perfect 3-of-3 from the field and 2-of-2 at the free-throw line for eight points. Nebraska-Kearney finished with 13 made 3-point field goals, the most given up in a game by the Tigers this season. However, without much inside presence the Lopers scored 70 percent of their points beyond the arc. They only had one made free throw on two attempts in the game. Parker Badding and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/staff.aspx?staff=269">Sean Murphy</a>&nbsp;each had four made 3-point shots. Badding finished with a team-high 16 points and Murphy had 14. All but one of the six Lopers that scored in the game hit at least one 3-point field goal. The win gave the Tigers their first in the Health and Sports Center since the 2012-13 season. After the teams split the season series the last four years, the Tigers finally picked up a regular season sweep against the Lopers since that 2012-13 season. The Tiger win also puts head coach&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/coaches.aspx?rc=1048">Mark Johnson</a>&nbsp;one win shy of 400 in his career guiding the Tigers, now at 399-200 overall. The Tigers return to action on Thursday evening (Feb. 3) at Newman University, the third leg of their current string of four straight road games.&nbsp;&nbsp;

However, without much inside presence the Lopers scored 70 percent of their points beyond the arc. They only had one made free throw on two attempts in the game. Parker Badding and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/staff.aspx?staff=269">Sean Murphy</a>&nbsp;each had four made 3-point shots. Badding finished with a team-high 16 points and Murphy had 14. All but one of the six Lopers that scored in the game hit at least one 3-point field goal. The win gave the Tigers their first in the Health and Sports Center since the 2012-13 season. After the teams split the season series the last four years, the Tigers finally picked up a regular season sweep against the Lopers since that 2012-13 season. 🏀 Tiger men clinical in win over Lopers

LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Keion Brooks scored 27 points and Oscar Tshiebwe had a double-double as No. 12 Kentucky manhandled No. 5 Kansas 80-62 on Saturday night.

The Wildcats grabbed a big halftime lead in Allen Fieldhouse and cruised to improve to 24-10 all-time in the series. Kansas had won four of the past five coming in. The last Kentucky win in Allen Fieldhouse was in 1985.

Kentucky coach John Calipari wasn’t interested in discussing history.

“I don’t even know who we played two weeks ago,” he said after the game. “We’ve won a lot of games against ranked teams, all kinds of different ways. I’ve done this a long time and I’ve been in many of these games on the road where it’s (ESPN College) Game Day. I told the team, ‘All the pressure is on the other team. If you play for 40 minutes, watch what happens.’”

Calipari said he’s seen this coming from Brooks.

“It’s how he’s been playing in his last couple of games and in practice,” Calipari said. “It wasn’t just making baskets. He rebounded. He defended. He came from the week side and tipped the ball. He made great plays. He did all the other things, and then he made shots.”

Tshiebwe had 17 points and 14 rebounds for Kentucky (17-4), which also got 12 points from Kellan Grady and 11 from Jacob Toppin.

Kansas coach Bill Self was not surprised by Tshiebwe’s game.

“Oscar’s stats don’t show how good he is at rebounding, and his stats show that he’s the best rebounder in the country,” Self said.

But Tshiebwe was more interested in talking about Brooks, who was not made available after the game.

“I’m so proud of him,” Tshiebwe said. “I want him to keep coming like that every night. We can be a top team if everyone steps up like that. They pay attention too much to me. Now, they forget about him.”

Kansas (17-3) was led by Ochai Agbaji, who had 13 points, 10 in the second half. But the two-time reigning Big 12 Player of the Week was held well below his Big 12-leading 21.3 points per game. Christian Braun also had 13 points.

Kentucky dominated the boards, owning a 41-29 rebounding edge, including 12-7 on the offensive end.

“Their guys got to a level that we couldn’t get to,” Self said. “When you get into a jumping contest with those dudes, we couldn’t compete.”

Self kept searching for combinations that would allow his team to get back in the game, but that search turned up empty. Kansas used a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to 62-48 early in the second half when Kentucky missed seven straight shots, but the Jayhawks never got any closer.

Kentucky used an 8-0 run early to grab the lead and then held Kansas at bay. Kentucky led by 12 at the 10:29 mark, with their points spread among seven different players. More telling, the Wildcats held a 13-4 advantage on the boards.

The Kentucky lead grew to as many as 20 when Kellan Grady hit a 3-pointer with 2:31 left in the half and the Wildcats led 51-31 at the break, Kansas’ largest halftime deficit of the season. They trailed Kansas State by 16 a week earlier but rallied for a 78-75 win.

Kentucky shot 61.8% (21 of 34) in the first half, while Kansas was just 13 of 33 (39.4%) and Agbaji was held to just three points.

GARDEN CITY - Hays High's three state ranked wrestlers finished in the top-three in their respective weight classes helping the Indians to an 11th place finish at the 64th annual Rocky Welton Invitational hosted by Garden City High School.

Gavin Meyers, who's the top-ranked wrestler in at 220, finished first after winning all four of his matches by fall in the first period. Meyers defeated the undefeated&nbsp; and defending Colorado state champion Xavier Freeman of Pueblo East in the finals.

Meyers was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler for the upper weights.

Harley Zimmerman finished second at 132, losing to Dodge City's Damien Mendez by a major decision (22-12) in the finals. He won his first four matches by fall.

Gavin Nutting finished third at heavyweight. After receiving a first-round bye, Nutting won his first two matches by fall before falling by a fall in the semifinals to Newton's Rio Gomez. He bounced back with a 7-1 win over Newton Marcel Gonzalez of Newton in the consolation semifinals then beat Valley Center's Elijah Hunt by fall in the third place match.

🤼‍♂️ Meyers leads HHS at Rocky Welton Invitational

OXFORD, Miss. -- Daeshun Ruffin scored 13 of his 17 in the second half and Mississippi defeated Kansas State 67-56 as part of Saturday's Big 12/SEC challenge.

Luis Rodriguez added 10 points for the Rebels (11-10), who shot 45%, 15% better than Kansas State.

Mark Smith collected his fifth double-double this seeason, scoring 18 of his 20 points in the second half and grabbing 16 rebounds for the Wildcats (10-10), who lost their third straight. Nijel Pack scored 18 points, making six of Kansas State's 11 3-pointers, and had seven assists.

Leading by six at halftime, Ole Miss began the second half with a 7-0 run capped by Rodriguez's 3-pointer. Smith responded with seven unanswered points and scored 15 straight. But even after his run ended with eight minutes remaining, the Rebels had a 10-point lead thanks in large part to Ruffin's second-half production.

A Ruffin basket put Ole Miss up by 13 with six minutes to go and the Wildcats wouldn't get closer than nine thereafter.

Ole Miss grabbed the lead seven minutes into the game with a 7-0 run. Another 7-0 run extended the Rebels' lead to 10 before Luke Kasubke converted a four-point play for Kansas State at the end of the half to trail 30-24. Kasubke's 3-pointer came after the Wildcats had missed nine straight shots, finishing at 26% for the half.

(AP) — Tom Brady is retiring from the NFL after an unprecedented career in which he won seven Super Bowls and set numerous passing records, according to ESPN.The 44-year-old Brady goes out after leading the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a Super Bowl title last season and NFC South championship this season.ESPN reported Brady's retirement on Saturday, citing unidentified sources.Brady had cited a desire to spend more time with his wife and children despite still playing at the top of his game.
