Some things to watch during Week 12 in the Big 12 Conference:

While the Horned Frogs have already clinched a spot in the Big 12 championship game, they have to keep winning to be part of the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-football-sports-ohio-michigan-163303275c49b7a13b3fd68a6eda2ffd">four-team College Football Playoff</a>. For defending league champion Baylor to get back in the title game, the Bears have to beat TCU and Texas, plus have both No. 19 Kansas State and No. 24 Oklahoma State lose their last two games.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-football-sports-baylor-bears-football-texas-christian-horned-frogs-football-gary-patterson-e76ef8d7b8953fb2a9bff6f1fb7f943d">TCU upset Baylor</a>&nbsp;last season, with linebacker Shadrach Banks' last-minute interception sealing a 30-28 win at home the week after coach Gary Patterson's abrupt departure from the Frogs. The last time TCU was this close to the playoff, in 2014, its only loss was 61-58 at Baylor.

Chandler Morris had 531 yards of total offense (461 passing, 70 rushing) against Baylor last November in his first start as TCU's quarterback, but got hurt in this year's opener. Max Duggan has since thrown a Big 12-best 25 touchdowns with only two interceptions, while Kendre Miller has five 100-yard rushing games in a row and a TD in 11 consecutive games.

No. 19 Kansas State (7-3, 5-2, No. 15 CFP) at West Virginia (4-6, 2-5)

The Wildcats can join TCU in the Big 12 title game with a win in Morgantown, combined with a loss by Texas at Kansas. The Mountaineers need to win their last two games to get bowl eligible for fourth-year coach Neal Brown, whose job status is still in question after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-football-sports-alabama-crimson-tide-gordon-gee-neal-brown-1d83bbde3062b9bb70c168cf9d21988c">West Virginia fired athletic director Shane Lyons</a>&nbsp;this week. The series is tied 5-5 as Big 12 members, with K-State winning last season after losing five in a row to the Mountaineers.

Texas is 16-2 against Kansas in Big 12 games, though the bowl-eligible Jayhawks won 57-56 in overtime at Austin last season. 🏈 CFP-chasing TCU in B12 title game, K-State could join Frogs

HAYS - The Fort Hays State men's basketball team scored the first seven points and never trailed&nbsp; as they opened their 50th season at Gross Memorial Coliseum with a 90-59 win over Bethel College Thursday.

Jaheim Holden scored 15 of his career-high 21 points in the first half and was one of three Tigers to score double-figures. Holden went 3-of-4 from beyond the arc and hit all six of his free throw attempts. Elihah Nnanabu added a career-high 19 points and seven rebounds. Kaleb Hammeke chipped in with 13.

After struggling offensively in their opening two games last weekend in Oklahoma, the Tigers shot 52-percent against the Threshers and went 9-for-17 from beyond the arc. After building a 23 point lead at the half, the Tigers never let Bethel any closer than 19 in the second half.&nbsp; The Tigers' largest lead was 33 when&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/geoff-hamperian/6899">Geoff Hamperian</a>&nbsp;slammed home a fast break dunk on an assist from Lucas Hammeke&nbsp;with 1:16 to go.

Bethel was held to 35.3 percent shooting and is the third straight opponent Fort Hays State has held under 60 points this season. Clifford Byrd II led the Threshers with 10 points, and he tied for a team-high four rebounds.

🏀 Tiger men cruise past Bethel in home opener

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Keyontae Johnson scored 19 points, Cam Carter added 16 and Kansas State defeated Kansas City 69-53 on Thursday night.

Desi Sills scored 10 of his 11 points in the final 6 1/2 minutes to help the Wildcats (3-0) blunt a Roos rally.

Shemarri Allen scored 21 points, including 16 in the second half when the Roos cut a 20-point deficit to 10, the final time with four minutes to go. Anderson Kopp added 13 points.

A soaring dunk by Johnson put K-State up by 20 early in the second half. But a 3-of-17 shooting stretch by the Wildcats aided Kansas City's comeback. The Roos (1-4) were not able to get the margin to single digits with Sills putting in four layups.

After Kansas City got the game's first basket, Johnson scored the next eight points and the Wildcats led the rest of the way. Carter had five points and Nae'Qwan Tomlin four in a 9-0 run late in the half with K-State leading 41-25 at the break. Carter had 14 points on 4-of-7 3-point shooting with the Wildcats 7 of 16 from the arc in the half. They missed their four attempts from the arc in the second half.

The Roos had 22 turnovers, two more than their average, that resulted in 26 points for the Wildcats, who made 11 steals.

🏀 Kansas State weathers Roos comeback

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs' Isiah Pacheco is the poster child for why NFL general managers don’t spend early draft picks on running backs.

The fact that the seventh-round selection has supplanted a 2020 first-round pick underscores the point.

After showing flashes of brilliance in training camp, Pacheco has moved ahead of Clyde Edwards-Helaire on the unofficial depth chart in Kansas City, getting the bulk of the carries on game day. He had season highs of 16 carries for 82 yards last week against Jacksonville, when Edwards-Helaire never got a chance with the ball in his hands.

“I've definitely been going at it every week, getting the feel for different teams, different schemes,” Pacheco said.

“For me, it's having the same mindset every day I come into the building: going to work, going to the practice field, go 100 percent, so when it gets to game day, go at a high level.”

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said this week that it wasn't by design that Edwards Helaire, their 2020 first-round pick, did not get a carry against Jacksonville, or that his only two targets in the passing game fell incomplete.

At one point, Edwards-Helaire was supposed to be in for an entire series, but the Chiefs went three-and-out.

Still, it's not difficult to notice that Pacheco has simply been more productive. He has 60 carries for 279 yards, which is more yardage than third-round pick Rachaad White of the Buccaneers on the exact same number of carries. Pacheco's average of 4.7 yards per attempt is a half-yard more than Edwards-Helaire this season.

Pretty good returns from the 251st player selected in April's draft.

“He's learning on the move, but he's had some good snaps,” Reid said. "It's worked out well where Clyde's getting reps and he's getting reps, and I think that's healthy. We're able to throw fastballs at the guys and then (Jerick McKinnon) is getting in there and doing his thing more on third downs.

“We'll just keep bringing him along,” Reid said, “but I like his progress.”

The fact that Pacheco was the penultimate running back selected in the draft — the last if you consider Zander Horvath of the Chargers a fullback — is a little hard to believe.

Pacheco tested better than nearly every other running back at the NFL scouting combine, tying for the best time in the 40-yard dash at 4.37 seconds despite his 215-pound frame.

Part of that might have to do with his inconsistent use at Rutgers, where Pacheco never got more than 169 carries in any of his four seasons. Some teams may simply not have had enough tape on him to fully realize his potential.

Yet time has proven that where players are drafted — running backs in particular — hardly portends success or failure.

Sure, the league's leading rusher, Saquon Barkley, was the No. 2 overall pick of the Giants in 2018, and the Titans' Derrick Henry was a second-round selection two years earlier.

But four of the top 12 running backs by yardage this season went in the fourth round or later, including the Dolphins' Jeff Wilson, who wasn't drafted at all.

The top two running backs taken in April, Breece Hall of the Jets and Kenneth Walker III of the Seahawks, were selected in the second round and have had dynamic debuts — though Hall is lost to a season-ending knee injury.

But Pacheco has more yards rushing than 16 running backs that were drafted ahead of him this year.

“I said it all throughout camp, we're pushing each other to be better,” McKinnon said, "and it's something that's continued forward, and I think it's showing when that person gets their number called, they've risen to the occasion."

That was the case when Pacheco fumbled early in the Chiefs' 27-17 win over Jacksonville. Rather than hang his head on the sideline, Pacheco vowed to make up for the gaffe.

And in a sign of how much Reid trusts him, the Chiefs went right back to Pacheco when they got another chance with the ball.

“It just showed me that I can be something in this offense,” Pacheco said. “I just have to continue to put in that work.”

🏈Chiefs RB Pacheco, a 7th-rounder, making most of his chances

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — Being a backup quarterback can be a lonely job, except&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-football-sports-kansas-texas-christian-horned-frogs-state-wildcats-093523262e7d125058187be25bed3fcf">for this season</a>&nbsp;in the Big 12. The QB turnstiles have been active, and Kansas State’s Will Howard and West Virginia’s Garrett Greene are among those who have thrived.

It’s only going to get busier for Howard, who will start in place of the injured Adrian Martinez when Kansas State plays at West Virginia on Saturday as&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-football-poll">the 19th-ranked Wildcats</a>&nbsp;try to close in on a possible berth in the Big 12 championship game.

“Will's going to be the guy. It's his football team,” Kansas State coach Chris Klieman said.

Howard, a junior, will make his 12th career start and second of the season. Knowing early in the week that he would get the first-team reps in practice has been “a little more calming in a way," Howard said.

This is the closest that he will play to his hometown of Downingtown, about 280 miles (451 kilometers) from Morgantown in eastern Pennsylvia.

“I’ll have a lot of people there,” Howard said. “As far as the Big 12 goes, there’s not a lot of games we get to play out east. So I’m excited for it and definitely have been thinking about this one.”

Howard has thrown nine touchdown passes with one interception in three games. With two weeks left in the regular season, six teams remain alive for the second spot in the Big 12 championship game and others are still trying to become bowl-eligible.

Based on how the season has played out so far, it’s likely many of these final games will be close.

The average winning margin in Big 12 games is 13.5 points, lowest among the Power Five conferences.

In 27 of the 35 conference games, the margin at some point in the fourth quarter was one score (8 points or less), according to Sportradar. Fifteen of those 27 games ended up decided by one score.

TCU coach Sonny Dykes points to high-level coaching and recruiting across the board as reasons for the competitiveness.

“There's just no layups," Dykes said. “Some people have the good fortune of being in leagues where the season starts and they go, ‘Well, we’re going to (win) these six games, then these three games are going to be tough.’ Well, that doesn’t happen in the Big 12.”

Dykes also said teams near or at the bottom of the standings have continued to play hard. Among them is&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-football-sports-alabama-crimson-tide-gordon-gee-neal-brown-1d83bbde3062b9bb70c168cf9d21988c">West Virginia, which forced out athletic director Shane Lyons this week</a>&nbsp;largely because of its struggles in a season that began with a one-score nonconference loss to Pittsburgh and has seen an overtime loss to Kansas before last week's win over Oklahoma on a game-ending field goal.

"We’re going to continue to fight and get better and win as many games as possible, and do it the right way, like he would want,” coach Neal Brown said.

Oklahoma, tied with the Mountaineers for eighth place, has lost its last two games by a total of four points, which brought home the nature of the season to coach Brent Venables.

“It will punish you for mistakes, a lack of technique, bad timing, a lack of precision,” he said, “but it will reward you when you do things the right way.”

No. 4 TCU (10-0, 7-0 Big 12) has done plenty right.

Entering this weekend,&nbsp;<a href="https://big12sports.com/standings.aspx?standings=183&amp;path=football">Kansas State, Oklahoma State, Baylor, Texas, Texas Tech and Kansas are mathematically alive</a>&nbsp;for the second spot in the championship game.

No. 19 Kansas State (7-3, 5-2) has the inside track and would clinch on Saturday if it wins at West Virginia and Texas loses at Kansas. If that scenario does not unfold, the race would be decided the following weekend.

K-State is 3-2 in Big 12 games that had one-score margins in the fourth quarter. Texas is 2-3 in such games.

The Big 12 already has six teams that have reached the minimum of six overall wins to be qualified to play in a bowl. Texas Tech and Oklahoma each need one more win to become eligible, and West Virginia and Iowa State would need to win out.

Iowa State (4-6, 1-6) has been the team with the hardest luck in close games. The Cyclones opened conference play with four losses by a total of 14 points. All seven of their Big 12 games have had one-score margins in the fourth quarter, and they've lost six.

Coach Matt Campbell saluted his players' perseverance through so many tough losses.

“Ninety percent of the teams I’ve been around fold their tent,” Campbell said. “The next thing you know, you get blown out here, you get blown out there, but this team never has and it hasn’t because our seniors have held the standard."

Texas Tech visits Iowa State on Saturday for a cold-weather meeting of teams trying to get to bowls.

The Red Raiders wouldn't have gotten to the Liberty Bowl last season if it hadn't been for Jonathan Garibay's 62-yard field goal as time expired beat the Cyclones, 41-38.

Iowa State, attempting to extend its school-record bowl streak to six in a row, is the perfect illustration of there being no gimmes in the Big 12.

The Cyclones are in last place despite leading the conference in all four major defensive categories.

🏈 Big 12 teams enter final stretch knowing there are no gimmes

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was missing his top three wide receivers in practice Wednesday because of injuries and illness, and the situation might not be a whole lot better when Kansas City visits the Chargers this weekend.

JuJu Smith-Schuster remained in the concussion protocol after taking a helmet-to-helmet hit from Jacksonville safety Andre Cisco in last Sunday's win over the Jaguars.

Smith-Schuster remained on the turf for several minutes before he was helped to his feet and off the field with help from teammates, and it's unlikely he will be cleared to play any time soon.

The Chiefs were also missing Mecole Hardman, who missed the 27-17 win over the Jaguars with an abdominal injury, and Marquez Valdes-Scantling, who was dealing with an illness that popped up over the past couple of days.

That left Mahomes with backup Justin Watson, rookie Skyy Moore, newcomer Kadarius Toney and special teams standout Marcus Kemp to catch passes as the Chiefs prepared for their visit to Los Angeles on Sunday night.

“We just put guys in position to succeed. For me, it's about executing the offense, finding the open guy, getting the ball out of my hands and letting them make plays,” Mahomes said. “We've seen these guys in big moments. Hopefully we get guys back later in the week, but if not, we'll be ready to roll out there.”

Yet the trio of missing wide receivers were each in the midst of their best stretches this season.

Smith-Schuster had five catches for 113 yards and a touchdown against the Bills, seven for 124 and a score against the 49ers and 10 for 88 yards against the Titans.

And he had a couple of catches early on against Jacksonville before the pass over the middle set him up for Cisco, whose shoulder and helmet hit Smith-Schuster in the head.

“We'll just take him day by day. We'll be cautious with him,” said Chiefs coach Andy Reid, adding that he had not heard from the NFL about the hit. “We're not going to do anything that you shouldn't do according to what the data shows.”

Hardman, in the midst of a contract year, had scored in three straight games with five touchdowns total over that span before missing last week's game against Jacksonville. He was targeted a season-high nine times against Tennessee.

Valdes-Scantling had three catches for 60 yards and his first TD with the Chiefs last Sunday.

Meanwhile, Moore has just seven catches for 106 yards. Watson has seven for 113 yards and two scores. And Toney has played 37 snaps total during his Kansas City career, though his performance against the Jaguars was encouraging.

Toney had four catches for 57 yards and his first NFL touchdown while adding 33 yards on the ground.

“I wasn't surprised by him making the plays,” Mahomes said, “but us being able to move him around as much as we have. It's a testament to him. He's gotten in here, he's learned multiple positions, we've moved him around — he's not in one spot.

"We're going to keep giving him more and more, and get him more and more involved in this offense, because it will make us better as the season goes on.”

Especially if the Chiefs are missing two or three of their other wide receivers.

Though SoFi was not specifically mentioned by the NFLPA last weekend. Reid is in the same camp, saying: “I've listened to all the studies — density studies. I've seen the different compounds they've put in there. I still like grass.”

For me, it's about executing the offense, finding the open guy, getting the ball out of my hands and letting them make plays,” Mahomes said. “We've seen these guys in big moments. The 2021 first-round pick flamed out in New York, unable to stay healthy or make an impact when he was on the field, but was getting a fresh chance in Kansas City.

In just his second game Sunday, he ran for 33 yards, caught four passes for 57 yards and scored his first NFL touchdown.

“Brett texted me whenever he knew it was kind of done,” Mahomes said of the trade. “He's always looking to add great players. We had competition in the room, and we have a lot of great receivers in that room, and we have a lot of great ones on this team. But whenever you have more competition, it brings out the best in everybody.”

The Chiefs fully expect Hardman and Smith-Schuster to return at some point; the former could be back Sunday night, when they visit the Los Angeles Chargers. But in the meantime, Toney is ready to step into their void with his new team.

“Yeah,” he said Sunday night, “I feel like I'm right where I need to be.”

The Chiefs had 31 sacks last season, the fourth-worst total in the NFL. They already have 27 this season, just five off the league lead. That includes five of Jacksonville's Trevor Lawrence on Sunday.

The shine is starting to rub off special teams coordinator Dave Toub, who not long ago was interviewing for head coaching jobs. The Chiefs allowed the Jaguars to recover an onside kick to begin the game, Jody Forston fumbled a kickoff return near the end of the first half and struggling kicker Harrison Butker missed another extra point.

Carlos Dunlap shared a sack with Chris Jones on Sunday, making him the 41st player to reach 100 for his career since sacks became an official stat in 1982. He's had two sacks in his past two games and four on the season.

“Being able to get that accomplished is a huge milestone and accomplishment,” Dunlap said. "That was a goal, playing 10-plus years, getting 100-plus sacks to be in that elite category of the guys who have ever done it. So to get that done today and to share it with a guy who has potential to be up there as well (in Jones) was a very special moment.”

Clyde Edwards-Helaire, a first-round pick in 2020, did not have a carry Sunday as the Chiefs turn toward rookie Isiah Pacheco as their feature running back. Edwards-Helaire has just 28 carries for 85 yards over the past four games.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Jalen Wilson and Dajuan Harris Jr. provided a calm, steadying influence for No. 6 Kansas on Tuesday night. Jayhawks freshman Gradey Dick provided the late splash.

Together they extended the nation's longest active winning streak.

Wilson scored a career-high 25 points, Harris dished out a career-best 10 assists and&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/i/status/1592749620320690177">Dick made three crucial baskets</a>&nbsp;in the final 2 1/2 minutes to help the defending national champs rally past No. 7 Duke 69-64.

“We didn't know where he was at times; we sent out a missing person's report in the second half," interim coach Norm Roberts joked, referring to Dick. “But this is his first real big-boy game he's played in and I thought he really responded.”

Kansas is 3-0 with Roberts filling in for suspended coach Bill Self, who will sit out the first four games because of a 2017 infractions scandal. But the results remain unchanged as the Jayhawks ran their winning streak to 14.

Wilson also grabbed 11 rebounds on a night when shooting was at a premium.

Duke (2-1) was led by&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/i/status/1592742075338215424">Kyle Filipowski, who scored a season-high 17 points</a>&nbsp;and had 14 rebounds to become the first player in school history to register double-doubles in each of his first three games. Marvin Bagley III was the only other player to do it in his first two games.

Jeremy Roach had 16 points as new coach Jon Scheyer lost for the first time.

The young Blue Devils pushed Kansas to the brink in a game that went back and forth most of the second half. Duke just couldn't finish it off.

“Before the game, we said that whoever handles the adversity better wins and I thought they did that late,” Scheyer said.

Still, the Blue Devils were in prime position when Filipowski's putback with 4:39 left gave Duke a 59-54 lead.

But Kansas scored seven straight points to take a 61-59 lead on Dick's 3-pointer with 2:21 to go. Roach answered with a 3 for Duke and then Dick scored on alley-oop play with 1:40 left to give Kansas a 63-62 edge.

The Jayhawks never trailed again, ending the game on a 15-5 run.

“&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/i/status/1592751387812978688">Those two guys, they never gave in</a>,” Roberts said. “There was never any panic and that's all led by Jalen and Dajuan.”

Duke: These Blue Devils don't appear to be content taking a backseat to anybody. Despite a slow start and a poor finish, they traded jabs all night with a more experienced team. At times, they even looked more physical than Kansas — all promising signs for improvement.

Kansas: They've survived without Self — this time just barely. But the gritty Jayhawks played hard and fast and never got rattled, even when the execution wasn't great or the shots didn't fall. Even Roberts acknowledged sometimes winning ugly is what it takes.

Duke: The Blue Devils may slide a bit, but not much. Certainly not after this sort of performance just three games into a season with a first-year coach and three freshman starters.

Kansas: With No. 4 Kentucky losing earlier Tuesday and the Wildcats visiting No. 2 Gonzaga this weekend, the Jayhawks could move up a spot or two — depending on the results.

In a game of firsts, Scheyer thought his team played relatively well. It marked the first time Scheyer coached or Duke's talented freshmen class played outside Cameron Indoor Stadium. It also was their first experience against a ranked team and their first close contest. And the double-overtime game between Michigan State and Kentucky in the opener Tuesday didn't help much.

“We went out there three times to warm up,” Scheyer said. “It was the first time for a lot of different things.”

Duke: Heads home to face Delaware on Friday.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals have selected several potential sites to build a replacement for aging Kauffman Stadium, owner John Sherman said Tuesday.

In a letter to fans posted on social media, Sherman said the sites are in or near downtown Kansas City, but he did not elaborate. Kauffman Stadium and Arrowhead Stadium, the home of the Kansas City Chiefs, are located far from the city's downtown.

“In the spirit of (Royals founder) Ewing Kauffman, our current mission is to look ahead to ensure that Major League Baseball and the Kansas City Royals will thrive in this region for decades to come,” Sherman said.

Sherman, who bought the team in 2019, estimated the new stadium district could cost up to $2 billion, which he said would make it the most expensive project in Kansas City history.

Sherman&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/sports-mlb-nfl-kansas-city-kansas-city-royals-3b4729a71e843bf8eddee42dc6ced7e1">announced last year</a>&nbsp;that the Royals were discussing whether to build a new stadium or renovate Kauffman, which will be 60 years old when the team's lease expires in 2031.

In his letter, Sherman said renovating the current stadium up to standards needed to compete with other organizations would cost as much as or more than the new stadium.

“A new home would be a far better investment, both for local taxpayer dollars already supporting our facility, and for the Kansas City community,” Sherman said.

He said supporters envision a ballpark district around the new venue, with restaurants, shops, offices, hotels and affordable housing.

After a push in the early 2000s to build a stadium downtown fizzled, Jackson County voters in April 2006 approved a sales tax increase to fund $250 million in renovations to Kauffman and Arrowhead.

The new proposal will rely on continuing the team's current public-private partnership and investment with several local jurisdictions and the state of Missouri, said Sherman, who pledged that Jackson County residents would not be asked to contribute more tax dollars to the stadium than they currently do.

The next steps will include team officials holding a listening tour throughout the area to discuss the plan and beginning discussions with local, state and federal officials about possible additional funding sources.

The TMP-Marian Monarchs had five players named to the All-Mid-Continent
League football team released this week.

TMP senior Kade Harris was an all-league selection at running
back, linebacker and returner. Senior Michael Hale and junior Kendall Walker earned
first-team honors on the offensive line and sophomore kicker Henry Speno was
named to the first team. 

Walker was also named to the second team defensive line and
Hale was an honorable mention pick on the defensive line. Junior defensive back
Peyton Schwartz was also named honorable mention.

Harris, who rushed for 864 yards and nine touchdowns as a
senior was a unanimous first team selection at running back. He finished his
career as the career rushing leader at TMP with 3,314 yards and 39 touchdowns.

After earning first-team selection at quarterback as a junior
he is a three-time all-league selection on offense.

With his first-team selection on defense, Harris earned
all-league honors all four years. Harris led the Monarchs with 85 tackles as a
senior. He was a first-team selection at defensive back as a junior and a sophomore
after earning a second-team selection as a freshman.

Harris was selected as the first-team returner each of the
last two seasons and was all-MCL all four years. He finished his career with
three career return touchdowns.

Both Hale and Walker were honorable mention selections on
the offensive line last season. Hale was also an honorable mention pick at center
his sophomore season.

Walker was a first team pick on defense and Hale was named
to the honorable mention team last season.

Walker finished with 38 tackles, 5.5 for loss, one sack, an
interception and forced fumble.

Hale ranked third on the team in tackles with 59 total
tackles, 15 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks.

It was the first all-league selections for both Speno and
Schwartz. 

Speno made 22-of-25 PAT attemps and Schwartz finished with
19 tackles, 2 for loss and one interception.
