LIBERAL – The Hays High girls’ soccer team bounced back from a
frustrating loss to Garden City on Monday with a 2-1 overtime win in Liberal Thursday.

Arely Maldanado scored the game winning goal with 36 seconds
left in the first overtime.

The Indians are now 8-2 overall and 3-1 in the WAC. They return
to action Monday at Great Bend.

GREAT BEND - Hays High wrapped up Western Athletic Conference play with a single game at Great Bend Thursday. The game was moved up two hours with the threat of weather in the forecast.

The Great Bend offense was in high gear all afternoon as they beat Hays 11-2. The Panthers took an early 1-0 lead in the first, added six in the third and four more in the fifth. The Panthers had multiple base runners in five of the six innings they batted in. The Indians put just ten on the base paths.

Great Bend recorded three double plays in the game while the&nbsp; Indians turned one.

Hays falls to 7-2 on the season and finishes WAC play at 6-2. Great Bend improves to 8-3, 5-2. The conference championship will come down to the upcoming result between the Panthers and Dodge City.

Hays is on the road Saturday to play DeSoto.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Joe Ryan had just pitched six innings of two-hit ball, helping the Minnesota Twins hold off the Kansas City Royals 1-0 on Thursday, when the California kid spotted a poster of Nolan Ryan hanging in the visiting clubhouse at Kauffman Stadium.

After such a dominant performance, it was a fitting backdrop for some postgame interviews.

“I'm just trying to make pitches, get outs,” explained the 25-year-old Ryan, who may not have that other Ryan's blazing fastball but still mixed his own with a brutal slider to shut down Kansas City's revamped lineup.

“I think that's going to give our team the best chance to win a game.”

Miguel Sano's sacrifice fly off Zack Grienke in the second inning represented the game's only run.

Jhoan Duran and Joe Smith then handed that slimmest of leads to Emilio Pagan, who worked around a leadoff walk in the ninth for the Twins’ first save this season. Their bullpen had blown both previous chances.

Ryan (2-1), who helped the U.S. win the silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics, allowed only a two-out single to Michael Taylor in the third inning and a triple to Andrew Benintendi in the fourth during his third straight impressive start. He walked one while striking out five, and has now allowed three runs on nine hits over his first 16 innings this season.

“He threw some strikes. He missed some bats. He did what you like to see,” Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said.

Greinke (0-1) allowed six hits and a walk while striking out five, and Kansas City's bullpen kept the game close the rest of the way, running its scoreless streak to 21 1/3 innings — all to no avail.

“We have to get big hits. That's just commonsense,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said.

Matheny tried to get the sluggish Royals offense going by shifting Nicky Lopez to the top of the order and dropping Whit Merrifield to second ahead of Benintendi and Salvador Perez. None of them had much success against Ryan, though, whose beguiling mix of pitches induced weak contact all afternoon.

Benintendi had the hardest-hit ball, a deep fly that bounced off the right-field wall for a triple. But he was thrown out by center fielder Nick Gordon while trying to score on Perez's shallow fly ball to end the fourth.

The Royals committed another baserunning blunder in the fifth after Bobby Witt Jr. worked out a two-out walk. The club's top prospect was caught leaving early in an attempt to steal second and was thrown out retreating to first.

The Royals, who along with San Diego began the day as the only teams yet to commit an error, nearly had their streak snapped when Adalberto Mondesi was given one for bobbling a difficult grounder by Luis Arraez in the sixth. The official scorer changed the call to a single the next inning.

Twins RHP Jorge Alcala (elbow inflammation) was shut down from throwing after experiencing “something that didn't feel right,” Baldelli said. “We're going to reset him to zero before we try to build him back up again.”

Farm clubs for the Twins (Cedar Rapids Kernels) and Royals (Quad Cities River Bandits) will play August 9 at the “Field of Dreams” movie site near Dyersville, Iowa. That's two days before the Cubs and Reds play in the sequel to last year's game between the Yankees and White Sox. Both of the Class A clubs will wear throwback uniforms.

The Twins and Padres finalized their April 6 trade that sent LHP Taylor Rogers and OF Brent Rooker to San Diego along with $6.6 million cash for Pagan and RHP Chris Paddack. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Daniel Lynch was pitching so well into the sixth inning Wednesday night that Royals manager Mike Matheny would've left him in the game against Minnesota had the Kansas City offense provided a little more support.

Two runs turned out to be plenty for Matheny's bullpen, though.

Four relievers followed Lynch, each delivering a shutout frame, and the Royals held on for a 2-0 victory over the Twins on a dreary night at Kauffman Stadium that saw fewer than 9,000 fans walk through the gates.

“Just that great mix of pitching, bullpen and defense is everything you could want," Matheny said.

Lynch (1-1) bounced back from a dismal season debut against St. Louis, when he served up three homers to Kansas City's cross-state rival, to win a pitchers' duel against Chris Paddack (0-2) and the equally stout Minnesota bullpen.

Lynch never allowed a runner to reach third, getting plenty of help along the way from one of two big league defenses — the Padres have the other — that have yet to commit an error this season. Collin Snider, Jake Brentz and Josh Staumont got the lead to Scott Barlow, who worked around a single in the ninth for his first save of the season.

“I'd have liked to have had a little bigger lead and just let Daniel keep pitching,” said Matheny, whose bullpen has thrown 17 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings. "It's a little easier to swallow when you can watch those guys do what they do."

The Twins have lost four of their last five on a trip through Boston and Kansas City. They also were shut out for the third time this season, matching Arizona for the most in the majors, and have not scored in their last 13 innings.

“We're seeing the ball. We're taking a good amount of walks,” said Twins designated hitter Ryan Jeffers, who went 0 for 3 with two strikeouts. “But when it comes to hits, we're not getting them right now.”

The Royals scored in the first inning when Bobby Witt Jr. grounded into a double play and Whit Merrifield scampered home from third, but nobody else crossed the plate until Kansas City strung together three singles in the fifth.

The last of them, a bunt by Adalberto Mondesi, got through the right side of a drawn-in infield to bring in a run.

Paddack escaped further damage by striking out Cam Gallagher and getting Merrifield to pop into foul territory. He was replaced for the sixth after allowing the game's only two runs on five hits without a walk while striking out four.

Lynch gave up a leadoff single in the sixth before he was done. Along with four hits, he walked one and struck out two.

“Obviously as much as I say I don't want to focus on results, results are reality,” Lynch said. “I just wanted to keep us in the game and give us a chance."

While the young left-hander was excellent, the Kansas City bullpen may have been better. It added four more innings to its impressive scoreless streak, and helped the Royals even their record at 5-5 in yet another close game.

Eight of their first 10 this season have been decided by two runs or fewer.

“The best way to describe the bullpen right now is dominant,” Lynch said. “It's like everyone seems to be pitching well.”

The Royals clinched their first series win through four series this season. It also was their first shutout of the Twins since August 20, 2016. ... Mondesi has not committed an error in his last 71 games at shortstop dating to August 2, 2020, one shy of the franchise record at the position set by teammate Nicky Lopez from May to August of last season. ... Paddack has not walked any of the 39 batters he has faced for Minnesota this season.

Twins: CF Byron Buxton (right knee) did some fielding work away from Kauffman Stadium early Wednesday so he could avoid the slippery natural grass surface. The Fort Hays State women's basketball team is adding a Division I transfer to next season's roster.

The Grand Island native played in 45 games making one start in two seasons with the Huskers and averaged 2.5 points and 1.1 rebounds per game.

Brown originally chose Nebraska over Eastern Illinois, Northwest Missouri State, Fort Hays State and Nebraska-Kearney.

As a senior at Grand Island Northwest, Brown averaged 17.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.0 steals to lead the team to the Class B state tournament. The 5-8 guard earned second-team Super-State honors from the Lincoln Journal Star and second-team All-Nebraska accolades from the Omaha World-Herald. Brown was a first-team Class B pick for the second straight year.

NORTH NEWTON, Kan. – Fort Hays State picked up its second win over Bethel College during the 2021-22 season on Wednesday. The Tigers defeated the Threshers by a score of 6-1, which is the same score they won by during the fall portion of the season. Fort Hays State took two of the three doubles matches to earn the first team point, then won five of the six singles matches to secure the team win. KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6388">Morgan Brasser</a>&nbsp;of Fort Hays State was named All-MIAA Honorable Mention for Women's Golf, announced on Wednesday (Apr. 20). Only 16 women's golfers in the MIAA received all-conference honors, which included five first team, five second team, and six honorable mention picks. Brasser is an All-MIAA Honorable Mention selection for the second straight season. She has a season scoring average of 77.2. Brasser has four top 10 finishes this season, which includes three in the top five. She claimed her first collegiate individual title by winning the MWSU Holiday Inn Express Classic in St. Joseph, Mo. on March 29, and three of her four top-10 finishes have occurred during the spring portion of the 2021-22 season. 🏈 Football spring scrimmage canceled, youth camp still on

ELLINWOOD – The TMP-Marian baseball team picked up a pair of
wins Tuesday, beating Ellinwood 19-2 and 4-3. The Monarchs improve to 3-1 on
the season.

Game 1: TMP 19, Ellinwood 2 (4 innings) 
The Monarchs scores six runs in the second, third and fourth innings in the
game shortened to four innings by run-rule.

Joey Mindrup had three of the Monarchs 13 hits. Mark&nbsp; Rack, Griffin Schumacher and Drew Werth all had two hits, all singles. Rack and Nick Helget both
drove in three runs as the Monarchs took advantage of eight walks and six Ellinwood
errors.

Caden Morgan didn’t give up a hit and allowed only one run with
five strikeouts and two walks over three innings for the win. Rack struck out
three in the fourth to end the game.

Game 2: TMP 4, Ellinwood 3 
TMP scored three in the top of the first then overcame five errors to complete the
doubleheader sweep. After scoring their first run on an error, Jace Wentling
singled scoring Mark Rack. Caden Morgan followed with a&nbsp; single to center which scored Wentling.

Rack pushed the TMP lead to 4-2 with an RBI single in the fourth.

The Eagles took advantage of a walk and an error and scored a
run in the bottom of the sixth on a two-out single but Nick Herman got a flyout
to end the inning leaving runners at second and third.

Herman worked a 1-2-3 seventh and picked up the save. Herman didn’t
allow an earned runs with seven strikeouts and two walks. Jace Wentling pitched
the first three innings and picked up the win. He allowed two unearned runs on
one hit with three strikeouts and a walk.

The Monarchs host Abilene Friday in their home opener at 4:00
p.m. The doubleheader will be broadcast on KHAZ (99.5-FM).

⚾ Monarchs sweep Ellinwood

PLAINVILLE – The TMP-Marian track and field team won six
events Tuesday at the Plainville Invitational. Kade Harris won the boys 100 and
200 meters, Ella Bain took the girls 3200 meters, Kassidi Yost won the girls high
jump and the Monarch girls won the 4x400 and 4x800.

The Monarchs girls finished second in the team standings,
three points behind first place Norton. The Bluejays also won the boys team
title.

Victoria’s Macy Hammerschmidt won the 100 meters and the long
jump. 

Emily Eck of Ellis wins the 400 and Madelyn Russell the 800.

👟 Monarchs win six events at Plainville Invitational

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Salvador Perez homered twice, and Hunter Dozier hit another go-ahead home run to lift the Kansas City Royals over the Minnesota Twins 4-3 on Tuesday night.

Perez homered in the fourth off Chris Archer and tied the score 3-3 in the sixth when he went deep against Tyler Duffey (0-2). One out later, Dozier hit a tiebreaking home run for the second straight game, following up on his two-run drive in the sixth off Detroit’s Will Vest in a 3-1 win Saturday.

“Any time you can get some go-ahead home runs at that point it feels good,” Dozier said. “We have a lot of confidence in our offense. It’s a matter of time before we really break out.”

“The one to Salvy, the previous two were inside,” Duffey said. “But that one wasn’t. It’s a matter of inches. The one to Dozier, same thing. That one was left just over the plate.”

Amir Garrett (1-0) pitched 1.2 hitless innings, combining with four other pitchers for 4.2 innings of scoreless, one-hit relief. Josh Staumont pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save in as many games.

“It was a big day,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “Just some good at-bats all the way around. Really good defense and the bullpen was fantastic.”

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. – The Fort Hays State men's golf team closed out their 2021-22 season with an eighth place finish at the MIAA Championship, held at the WinterStone Golf Course. 

The tournament was shortened to two days with two rounds on Monday and one on Tuesday due to the weather forecast for Wednesday.

Jackson Rader and Dustin Nichols both finished in the top 25. Rader led the Tigers with a 13-over par, 229 and placed 22nd. Rader shot rounds of 80 and 75 on Monday and closed with a 2-over, 74 on Tuesday. He carded three birdies in both the second and third rounds. Nichols finished one stroke behind Rader and tied for 24th place. After rounds of 76 and 79 on Monday, he closed with a 3-over, 75 on Tuesday with pars on 14 of the final 18 holes.

Parker Krob tied Rader for the lowest round for the Tigers with a 74 in the second round. Krob tied for 35th&nbsp;(+21, 237). Bryce Cowan&nbsp;finished in 37th&nbsp;(+22, 238), Tanner Copeland&nbsp;finished 41st (+27, 243)

Matt Hoemann of Central Missouri took home medalist honors at the tournament at 3-under par overall. He was the only golfer in the field to finish under par for the tournament. His&nbsp; 3-under 69 in the final round was the lowest round for any golfer in the tournament.

Former Hays High standout Tradjon McCrae closed with an 80 on Tuesday and tied for 13th at 9-over. The Missouri Southern golfer had rounds of 74 and 71 on Monday.

Rogers State easily took home the team title at 11-over par. Central Missouri was 16 strokes back in second, while Missouri Southern was 18 strokes back in third. Fort Hays State remained eighth in the standings from the end of the first round all the way through to the completion of the tournament, finishing at +61 (925). The Tigers were 45 strokes better than Lincoln and 46 better than Newman.&nbsp;&nbsp;

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The new faces of the Kansas City Chiefs offense are getting to know each other in the warm Texas sun, rather than the cold Kansas City rain, after Andy Reid decided to make voluntary offseason workouts a virtual exercise this season.

In a departure from his previous three decades of offseason work, Reid said Monday that he's encouraging his players to Zoom into voluntary meetings — rather than attend in person at the Chiefs practice facility — so that they can continue their workouts from anywhere in the country ahead of more formalized team activities next month.

“There's a number of guys here lifting,” Reid said, “but again, these are all voluntary camps, all three phases.”

That hasn't stopped a number of players from congregating around Patrick Mahomes in Texas, where the star quarterback spends the offseason. Many of them are new faces that the Chiefs have added to the offense after trading three-time All-Pro Tyreek Hill to the Dolphins and losing wide receivers Demarcus Robinson and Byron Pringle in free agency.

Marquez Valdes-Scantling and JuJu Smith-Schuster are the biggest names that Chiefs general manager Brett Veach has landed to help fill Hill's void in the offense. The Chiefs also have signed Ronald Jones II to help at running back, and there are several other players that have been signed to compete for a spot on the roster next season.

The work toward that goal began this week in the virtual meeting room with Reid and his coaches, and on the Texas practice fields with Mahomes, who knows the foundation for a successful season begins long before kickoff in September.

“The biggest thing for the work we've been getting in Texas is to build those relationships,” Mahomes said by Zoom. “That's what has made us great the last few years, the bond of our team, the chemistry we have, so we can be who we are. I wanted to get everybody together so they can meet each other, get to know each other and build those friendships.”

There are always new faces, even for the most successful of franchises, but the near-total revamp that the Chiefs have had this offseason is rare for a club so stable that it has hosted the past four AFC championship games.

Hill was the biggest departure, shipped to the Dolphins for a slew of draft picks that could further remake the offense next week. It was a move that made eyebrows raise across the league both for the value that Hill has had for Kansas City and for the record contract that Miami gave him the moment he arrived in South Florida.

Smith-Schuster, who showed flashes of stardom in Pittsburgh, and Valdes-Scantling, who must be living right to go from Aaron Rodgers to Mahomes as his quarterback, are high-upside players that Veach believes can balance Hill's production.

I think some time away and bonding with new players is important. And when they get here, they'll be revved up, and we'll be here for quite some time. So these next two weeks they can work and get to know each other away from here and I think that's important.”
