will be rescheduled as part of a split doubleheader on Monday, July 11. Game 1
of that doubleheader will start at 1:10 p.m. CT, and Game 2 (the originally scheduled
game) will follow at 7:10 p.m. CT. Both games of the split doubleheader will be
9-inning regulation games.

Tickets
for the Sunday, April 17 postponed game will be honored for the rescheduled
game, which will be Game 1 of the doubleheader on Monday, July 11. Fans do not
have to exchange their original tickets if they elect to attend the rescheduled
game.

⚾ Royals/Tigers series finale postponed; makeup on July 11

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Hunter Dozier homered to break a tie in the sixth, and lead the Kansas City Royals to a 3-1 win over the Detroit Tigers on Saturday.

After Carlos Santana walked with one out, Dozier lifted an 0-2 pitch from Will Vest (0-1) into the left field bleachers for his first home run of the year.

Collin Snider (2-0), the first of four Royals relievers, picked up the victory getting five outs. Josh Staumont earned the club’s first save of the season as Kansas City snapped a five-game losing streak.

Royals starter Kris Bubic departed after 4 1/3 innings, allowing one run on two hits and five walks; he struck out four.

Kansas City took an early 1-0 lead when Bobby Witt, Jr., and Andrew Benintendi singled with one out in the first. Salvador Perez brought in Witt with a ground out. It was the first run scored by the Royals in the first inning this year. They have surrendered 11 first-inning runs.

The Tigers responded the next inning when Dustin Garneau’s two-out double plated Daz Cameron, who had walked and stolen second.

Detroit starter Matt Manning left the game after two innings with right shoulder discomfort; he allowed a run on five hits with two strikeouts.

Tigers: Optioned RHP Elvin Rodriguez to Triple-A Toledo and selected RHP Wily Peralta from Toledo; RHP Bryan Garcia has been designated for assignment.

Lincoln moved to 12-31 overall and 0-22 in the MIAA. More importantly for the Tigers, a sweep of all four games over the weekend at home put them back in the chase for the MIAA Tournament. FHSU is now up to ninth, just a game back of the eighth position in the standings. The top eight teams in the conference qualify for the conference tournament. FHSU has four conference doubleheaders remaining, two of which are next weekend at home against Newman and Central Oklahoma. Game 1: Fort Hays State 8, Lincoln 0 (Run rule – 6 inn.) Azusa, Calif. - Two more school records were&nbsp;broken on the final day of the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, Calif. on Friday. The Tigers racked up seven provisional performances on Friday, giving FHSU a total of 15 provisional marks and six&nbsp;school records for the week. She finished 42nd in the open A division. Holman and Rossi both tallied two other provisional marks. Holman ran 11.67 in the 100m dash, good for sixth out of 111 athletes, before she finished fourth out of 130 competitors in the 200m dash with a time of 23.93. She was the top collegiate finisher in the 200m dash. Rossi posted a time of 14.14 in the 100m hurdles, good for 12th place, while completing the 400m hurdles in 1:01.68, good for 11th. KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Rookie Spencer Torkelson hit a long two-run homer and had two of Detroit’s three hits, and the Tigers handed the Kansas City Royals their fifth straight loss, 2-1 on Friday night.

Miguel Cabrera doubled with one out in the seventh, leaving him five hits shy of 3,000. Torkelson followed one out later with a 432-foot bomb to left off Brad Keller, the second of his career. The rookie also had a two-out single in the fifth.

“It’s a big emotional hit,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said. “A big swing like that put a jolt in the dugout. It’s a great way to stamp his arrival.”

“It’s a really special moment,” Torkelson said. “That inning doesn’t happen without (Cabrera's) double.”

Tarik Skubal fanned six of the first eight Royals batters and retired the first 11 before Salvador Perez squeezed a grounder through the left side for the game’s first hit with two out in the fourth.

“I felt pretty synced up to kind of incorporate the things I was working on,” Skubal said. “I felt good from the start.”

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Victor Reyes and Austin Meadows had RBI singles in the seventh inning, and the Detroit Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals 4-2 on Thursday night.

With the game tied 2-2, pinch-hitter Eric Haase hit the first of three straight two-out singles off reliever Jake Brentz (0-2), followed by Reyes and Meadows.

“I know the back end of that bullpen really well,” Haase said. “So, I prepare for those guys and look where we are in the lineup and it came up today.”

Rookie Spencer Torkelson walked with one out and scored on Reyes' hit.

“Victor doesn’t get that chance if it wasn’t for a couple of hits before that and the walk,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said. “A couple of two-out at-bats that really matter, in setting up Victor and then Victor does his part.”

Game 1:&nbsp;Hays 8, Dodge City 2 Garrett Wellbrock threw his second complete game of the season holding Dodge City to a pair of runs over seven innings in a 8-2 win in game one.

Hays took the lead in the second on a Will Cadoret double that scored Bradyn Dreher from second. Hays added an additional run in the inning for a 2-0 lead.&nbsp;

The Red Demons pulled within a run at 2-1 in the fourth inning, but was never closer.

The Indians added four runs in the sixth, three off the bat of Dalton Dale on a three run double, and two in the seventh, both on a Noah Weimer single, for the 8-2 difference.

Noah Weimer, Jack Fields, and Dalton Dale all recorded two hits in the game.

Wellbrock has struck out eight and walked one in each of his three starts on the season.

GREAT BEND – Hays High had two first
place finishers at the Great Bend Invitational Thursday. Jordan Dale cleared a
personal best 6-8 in the high jump. Kyreese Groen won the long jump with a leap
of 22-6 ¾. 

The Hays High girls finished fourth.
Lilian McGrath finished second in the long jump and 200 meters. Halle Lohmeyer
placed third in the discus and Maggie Lindenmeyer finished third in the shot
put.

The Indians led 1-0 at the half and improve to 7-1.

⚽ HHS blanks Trinity Academy for fifth straight win

NEWTON - The Hays High boys golf team finished ninth at Thursday's Newton Invitational at the Par 72 Sand Creek Station Golf Course. Blake Buckles led the Indians with a 92.

Maize South won the team title with a 317, nine shots better than second place Bishop Carroll.

Carroll's Noah Holtzman won the individual title with a 2-over-par 72.

A dream a dozen years in the making came true for Hays High senior Wesley Oakley on Thursday. The 6'3" guard inked his letter of intent with Manhattan Christian College of Manhattan, Kansas. Oakley knew that he wanted to play for the Thunder after spending time in the school's facility during AAU practices. Once the scholarship offer came through, he made it official.&nbsp;

The Thunder of Manhattan Christian College are part of the Midwest Christian College Conference and went 24-9 this past season, which included an 11-1 conference mark. They finished third in the NCCAA National Tournament in Joplin, Missouri.

Oakley was part of a Hays High team that packed the gymnasium on a regular basis. Among his favorite memories was the little kids that wanted come up and talk to him, because he remembers being that same little kid when attending games at Hays High.

Coach Alex Hutchins mentioned how even though Oakley wasn't high in the stats for points per game on the team (5th at 4.7 per game) he ranked high in several other categories. He was second in rebounds, offensive rebounds, assists, and steals on a per game basis and third in defensive rebounds and blocks per game.

Oakley appeared in 46 games for the Indians, starting 20 of those his senior season.

Oakley to play basketball for MCC Thunder

AZUSA, Calif. - The Fort Hays State track and field team saw two school record go down while posting four NCAA DII provisional qualifying marks on day one of the Bryan Clay Invitational Wednesday.

Gretchen Kuffel broke a 12-year-old school record in the 3,000m steeplechase after crossing the line in a provisional qualifying time of 10:50.51. She beat the previous school record by nearly 22 seconds.

Robbie Schmidt capped off the day with a record-breaking performance in the invitational section of the 10,000m run. After breaking the 5,000m record earlier this season, the senior placed fifth overall out of 47 competitors with a time of 29:22.63, more than 22 seconds faster than the old school record set in 2015. He was second amongst collegiate competition and was first amongst DII athletes.

Mattie Rossi wrapped up day one in the heptathlon with 3,165 points through four events. She opened the day with a provisional qualifying time of 13.84 in the 100m hurdles, good for 1,001 points. It was one of just four single-event scores in excess of 1,000 points all day in the field of 77 athletes. Rossi is currently 19th overall. Taylor Savolt is 32nd in the field with a four-event total of 2,948 points. Her top event was also the 100m hurdles, where she grabbed 870 points after crossing the line in 14.79.

She beat the previous school record by nearly 22 seconds.Robbie Schmidt capped off the day with a record-breaking performance in the invitational section of the 10,000m run. After breaking the 5,000m record earlier this season, the senior placed fifth overall out of 47 competitors with a time of 29:22.63, more than 22 seconds faster than the old school record set in 2015. He was second amongst collegiate competition and was first amongst DII athletes.Mattie Rossi wrapped up day one in the heptathlon with 3,165 points through four events. She opened the day with a provisional qualifying time of 13.84 in the 100m hurdles, good for 1,001 points. It was one of just four single-event scores in excess of 1,000 points all day in the field of 77 athletes. Rossi is currently 19th overall. Taylor Savolt is 32nd in the field with a four-event total of 2,948 points. 👟 Kuffel, Schmidt break records on day one of Bryan Clay Invitational

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Albert Pujols called his shot.

The veteran slugger told Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol he was going to hit the first pitch he saw Tuesday night for a home run — and then did just that.

Pujols homered for the first time since returning to St. Louis and Andrew Knizner launched a three-run shot as the Cardinals defeated the Kansas City Royals 6-5 on Tuesday night.

“When you have 680 you can make those kind of calls,” Pujols said. “I had a good feeling. Sometimes you get lucky, and it happens.”

Nolan Arenado also went deep for St. Louis, which has won 20 of 27 interleague games against the in-state Royals since Aug. 7, 2017.

Salvador Perez homered twice and Michael A. Taylor also connected for Kansas City, which has allowed 33 runs in losing its last three games.

The 42-year-old Pujols, who also singled twice in a 3-for-4 performance, signed with St. Louis on March 28 for his final season. He played for the Cardinals from 2001-11, helping them win two World Series.

In the first inning, Pujols slammed the first pitch he saw from Daniel Lynch over the wall in left field, much to the delight of the crowd, which chanted his name before he stepped out of the dugout for a curtain call.

In addition to his 680 homers, Pujols has 3,304 hits over a 21-year career.

“He's The Machine for a reason,” Knizner said. “I can't say enough about how he played tonight. That was an excellent display of hitting, squaring the ball up all over the field. It was impressive to watch.”

Marmol was impressed that Pujols was able to back up his batting practice boast.

“He's never told me that before,” Marmol said. “I believed him.”

Pujols' drive came on the very next pitch after Arenado clocked a two-run shot. Arenado has three homers and nine RBIs this season.

Knizner, making his first start of the year, ripped a long drive just inside the left-field foul pole in the fourth to put the Cardinals ahead to stay, 6-3.

“I think it was a slider," Knizner said. “He just happened to leave that one up and I put a good swing on it. I kind of blacked out. That sometimes happens when you hit home runs. It comes out of the right tunnel and you're just trained to swing."

Jordan Hicks (1-0) picked up the win with two innings of hitless relief. St. Louis starter Dakota Hudson permitted three runs and five hits over four innings in his second start since undergoing Tommy John surgery in September 2020.

Giovanny Gallegos got his first save of the season.

Lynch (0-1) allowed six runs and nine hits over five innings. He struck out seven and walked one.

Perez hit solo shots in the second and eighth for his 13th career multi-homer game.

“It feels great, but the most important thing is to win the game," Perez said. “If I hit a homer and we lose, I feel kind of horrible for the team.”

Marmol returned to the bench after missing the previous two games with the flu.

The Cardinals have scored in the first inning of all four games this season for the first time since 1901.

Kansas City OF Whit Merrifield played in his 474th consecutive game, the longest run in the majors since Prince Fielder played in 547 successive games with Milwaukee, Detroit and Texas from Sept. 14, 2010, to May 16, 2014.

The Royals will play their first 13 games in Missouri, the longest home-state run since the San Francisco Giants played their first 17 games in California in 2019.

Kansas City manager Mike Matheny returned to St. Louis, where he managed the Cardinals from 2012-18. He guided them to the postseason in each of his first four seasons, becoming the first manager to accomplish that feat.

Kansas City RHP Zack Greinke (0-0, 1.59 ERA) will face RHP Adam Wainwright (1-0, 0.00) in the finale of the two-game series Wednesday afternoon. GOODLAND – The TMP-Marian boys golf
team finished third at the Goodland Invitational Tuesdaay at the Sugar Hills
Country Club. The Monarchs fired a 392 which was 18 shots behind second place
Colby and 31 back of first place Hoxie.

Landon Rozean battled high winds to
tie for fourth place with a 91. He finished one stroke behind third place
finisher Eli Koerperich of Colby. Hoxie’s Ashton Dowell won the individual title
with an 83. Tucker Metcalf of Ulysses finished second with an 87.

TMP’s Heuer Brungardt tied for 18th
with a 99. Pake Dewey tied for 21st with a 100.

HAYS - Hays High hosted Great Bend in a single game on a windy, hot April afternoon.

Dalton Dale crushed a pair of two-run homers and drove in six total as the Indians beat Great Bend 16-6 in six innings.&nbsp;

The first four Indian batters scored in the bottom of the first as Hays never trailed. Garrett Wellbrock walked and then scored on a Dylan Dreiling single. Dalton Dale hit his first home run followed by a line drive home run by Derek Riggs.

Great Bend cut the lead in half in the top of the third inning at 4-2 before Hays plated one in the third and three more in the fourth for a 8-2 advantage.

The Indians led 10-5 after the top half of the sixth inning. They scored six runs, all with two outs, in the bottom half of the frame. Dalton Dale hit the first pitch he saw from the fourth Panther pitcher over the left field fence for a 16-6 run rule victory.

Wellbrock, Dale and Noah Weimer each scored three runs. Dreiling and Dale each recorded three hits while Carson Spray and Weimer had two.&nbsp;

Spray (2-0) took the victory working five innings. Bradyn Dreher pitched the sixth. Hays improves to 5-1 and is 4-1 in conference play. Great Bend falls to 5-2 and 2-1 in the WAC.

The second game of the series will be played in Great Bend on Thursday, April 21.&nbsp;
